Abstract:
Competition to become one of several dominant mobile platforms is intense. Platforms compete for developers, who create applications which make the platform valuable for users. Why doesn't one form of platform governance emerge as superior? This essay will stress the reasons for differentiation and proposes a new argument linked to a platform's “hierarchy.” Hierarchical governance features can help at one moment but then get in the way at a later time. These arguments are illustrated by different approaches to platform governance taken by the major mobile platform sponsors of recent years.

Abstract:
With the development of computer technology and network technology, the era of digital economy has arrived, the Internet platform economy has flourished, and a number of Internet enterprises with certain influence have emerged at home and abroad. Among them, the large Internet enterprises use their own platform's advantageous position in data, traffic and algorithms to interdepend on and influence each other, thus leading to the price of commodities not only determined by market supply and demand but more influenced by the oligarchs through some tangible or intangible ways of price leadership. Internet platform vendors take a cut from both the supply and demand side, capturing excess profits in the hands of the platform to the detriment of the majority. Internet platforms are not a place outside the law and the platform economy should operate under good market rules and market competition, while the state should also amend its anti-monopoly laws in due course to meet the needs of the market at this stage.

Abstract:
Software platforms’ success largely depends on complementors’ willingness to repeatedly invest their time and effort to the development of platform applications that attract users and increase the platform's installed base. But how can platform providers encourage desirable behaviours by complementors (i.e., application developers) in the absence of formal roles and hierarchical control structures? Although previous studies of software-based platforms have identified openness as critical instrument at the macro (i.e., platform) level and have provided initial attempts to measure the construct, no research has been dedicated to comprehensively conceptualize and operationalize platform openness at the micro level from the perspective of application developers. To go beyond these preliminary findings and to theorize about the nature and effects of platform openness as perceived by application developers, we develop a construct called perceived platform openness (PPO). Drawing on recently advanced scale development methodologies, we conceptualize PPO as a multidimensional construct and empirically validate it with important consequent variables linked to developers’ continuous platform contributions. Empirical evidence from several rounds of qualitative and quantitative steps supports the conceptual validity of the construct and empirical relevance of the scale across different smartphone platform contexts (i.e., Apple iOS and Google Android). Researchers will benefit from the study's systematic and comprehensive conceptualization of PPO, how it is measured, and how it relates to critical application developer beliefs and attitudes. Platform managers may use our results to target the underlying facets of PPO most likely to contribute to the platform's long-term goals.

Abstract:
This paper serves as an introduction to a symposium on the role that California oil and gas platforms serve as habitats for fishes and invertebrates. As of 2019, there are 27 platforms in state and federal waters off California, and the decommissioning of some of these platforms is imminent. Thus, consideration of whether to completely remove a platform or cut it off at some depth below the sea surface and retain the submerged portion as a reef is a decision that will occur in the near future. The objectives of the 10 papers in this dedicated issue of the Bulletin of Marine Science are to: (1) increase scientific understanding of the inter- and intrarelationships of fish and invertebrate populations at offshore oil and gas platforms and natural reefs within the Southern California Bight; (2) determine the extent of influence of platform assemblages on southern California and the Pacific coast populations of fishes and invertebrates; and (3) synthesize relevant reports, existing peer-reviewed literature, and new data analyses into a single peer-reviewed reference. This introductory paper contains a synopsis of all extant California platforms including information on: (1) the original operator, (2) the current operator of records, (3) the date the platform was installed, (4) the first production date, (5) the platform's distance from shore [including whether it is state or outer continental shelf (OCS) waters], (6) the bottom depth of the platform, (7) the number of well slots, (8) the number of conductors, (9) what the platform produces (oil and/or gas), (10) the platform jacket dimensions [generally at the seafloor (bottom)], (11) the platform's footprint, (12) the midwater surface area, (13) the total removal weight, (14) the platform location, (15) the shell mound size, (16) the shell mound volume, (17) the shell mound height, (18) the center of the shell mound location, and (19) the bottom slope. In addition, we present an overview of all previous research on the biology and ecology of California platform organisms.

Abstract:
The E-CLSC (E-closed-loop supply chain) game model dominated by manufacturer is set, and information value about asymmetry fairness concern of E-platform (E-commerce platform) is calculated for manufacturer, recycler, and E-platform. By signaling model under various signal costs, the authors study the condition for E-platform to transmit real information about fairness concern so as to reduce profit loss for all parties in E-CLSC. The authors prove that E-platform has the motivation to disguise or exaggerate fairness concerns in order to obtain more profit, and manufacturers must try to identify the E-platform's real fairness concern to avoid profit loss. Besides, only when different types of E-platforms need significantly different signaling cost, both of them would like to send real fairness-concern signal, and thus manufacturer can effectively identify E-platform's real information about fairness concern so as to improve recycling rate and optimize the whole E-CLSC operation.

Abstract:

Benchmarking of DSP kernel algorithms was conducted in the thesis on a DSP processor for teaching in the course TESA26 in the department of Electrical Engineering. It includes benchmarking on cycle count and memory usage. The goal of the thesis is to evaluate the quality of a single MAC DSP instruction set and provide suggestions for further improvement in instruction set architecture accordingly. The scope of the thesis is limited to benchmark the processor only based on assembly coding. The quality check of compiler is not included. The method of the benchmarking was proposed by BDTI, Berkeley Design Technology Incorporations, which is the general methodology used in world wide DSP industry.

Proposals on assembly instruction set improvements include the enhancement of FFT and DCT. The cycle cost of the new FFT benchmark based on the proposal was XX% lower, showing that the proposal was right and qualified. Results also show that the proposal promotes the cycle cost score for matrix computing, especially matrix multiplication. The benchmark results were compared with general scores of single MAC DSP processors offered by BDTI.

Mucha, Tomáš. "STRATEGIC CHALLENGES OF MULTI-SIDED INTERNET START-UPS." Master's thesis, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, 2012. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-125111.

Full text
Abstract:
The theory of this thesis focuses on particulars of multi-sided platform businesses with special emphasis put on early stage start-ups. The goal is to capture crucial findings and fuse them together to point out specifics which apply only for start-ups that are developed in form of multi-sided platform business. This thesis should provide guidance to all entrepreneurs considering such new business formations. It aims at showing them the most important points leading to positive value creation in multi-sided platform businesses. Specifically, it explains the strategic points hidden behind pricing and network effects utilization. At the same time it depicts what are the unnecessary distractions which just destroy attention and consume time and effort. Consequently, these findings are tested on practical example, where real start-up is modelled using this theoretical framework. Such real application points out strong and weak points. Consequently, the optimal framework is derived based on prior findings. The main suggestions point out what should be examined further by the theory and where the research captured enough knowledge.

Stenberg, Björn. "Test platform for pump controller - Platform development." Thesis, KTH, Reglerteknik, 2005. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-107534.

Full text
Abstract:
In this master thesis a test platform was created to be able to test, evaluate and compare different pump controllers in a dry environment. The platform consists of a simulated pump station to which optional pump controllers can be connected, i.e. a Hardware-In-The-Loop system. The largest benefits from such a platform are flexibility, rapid feedback along with the possibility to recreate the exact same conditions for different pump controllers. The test platform was implemented in LabVIEW on a PC that communicated with the pump control hardware through an I/O-card for analog and digital signals. The system is configured by setting parameters for pumps, sump, inflow, pipe system etc. The flows, energies and temperatures are simulated based on the input values and the control signals from the pump controller. The sump level and other signals needed by the controller are fed back from the simulation. There is also the possibility to affect the system by applying for example a pump failure or a clogging. Three different test runs with different pump controllers were performed. The test runs indicate that both the simulation models and the I/O-communication work. The concept of testing pump control hardware against a software simulation is a rapid, simple and cost efficient procedure.

Abstract:
Too Good To Go Portugal.
The platform phenomena is central to the contemporary socio-economic paradigm. In a few decades, the platform business model has managed to disrupt and fundamentally change multiple industries. Although this topic is being thoroughly studied by contemporary academia, it still yields discoveries. This research aims to contribute to that effort by exploring the role of partnerships in the internationalization of digital platforms, from the points of view of Strategic Management and International Business. It draws from a literature review on the platform business model and the internationalization process of platform firms to formulate an overarching research question: How are local platform ecosystems established and developed? To answer this question an explanatory case-study based on two highly contrasting cases: Microsoft Portugal and Too Good To Go Portugal is developed. This work finds that partnerships can develop platform ecosystems and create business opportunities in foreign markets. Platform firms invest and empower partners with tools and knowledge. Partner is a catch-all term that includes multiple firms playing diverse roles, organized in hierarchical fashion. Platforms can leverage on local and, sometimes, international partnerships to boost local competitiveness. Yet, international partnerships may not translate directly into local partnerships. Finally, factors such as the market credibility of the platform firm and its strategic attunement to the social, environmental, and ethical context may have a positive influence on platform diffusion in foreign user networks and ecosystems.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the two gaming platforms PC and Console and how the interfaces of games on these platforms could be designed more efficiently making it easier to release games on multiple platforms. In other words, how could the Multiple Platform First method look. Little previous work exist on this problem so this thesis work gathers information from other industries and also research on user interfaces in games in general. By looking at games running on both platforms different best practises and common solutions were discovered. A study was conducted testing different in-game components on users. The components were selected to test if the users would accept non-traditional components since users detect when playing on an interface not intended for the platform. This makes the study very complicated since the "best" solution might not work if the users does not accept it for the intended platform. Concepts were designed to combine the testing of solutions with the users opinion of the solutions. The chosen concepts were researched both in literature and by looking at present implementations in games. To be able to user test the solutions they were iterated from low fidelity prototypes on paper to high fidelity prototypes that were playable in Unity. The prototypes were tested on users and data gathered through Think Aloud comments and questionnaire answers. This study presents a first draft of how a multiple platform approach can be achieved.

Hume, Chad Albert. "Platform variable identification using sensitivity analysis for product platform design." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/50362.

Full text
Abstract:
The recent trend of mass customization has redefined the way companies do business. Each individual customer is now their own market, requiring products specific to their wants and needs at mass production prices. This need for ever-increasing variety is a significant challenge for industry that many times leads to ballooning manufacturing costs and lower product performance. One approach that has received widespread attention and implementation is to develop families of products from standardized product platforms. While, many methods have been developed to address different challenges within product platform design, they are not without their limitations/tradeoffs and therefore leave much room for development and improvement. The Product Platform Constructal Theory Method (PPCTM), developed by Dr. Gabriel Hernandez, is a novel approach for developing product platforms that enable customizable products. Rooted in the tenants of hierarchic systems theory and constructal theory, the PPCTM solves for the product platform as a problem of optimization of access in a geometric space. The result is a hierarchical organization of the modes for managing variety and the specification of their commonality across the product platform. Overall, the PPCTM offers an extremely comprehensive product platform design method, with the ability to accommodate multi-platform design, multiple design specifications, non-uniform demand modeling, and multi-objective decision-making. One limitation of this method is that the selection of platform variables and the modes for managing product variety must be pre-specified or determined ad hoc by the designer. This thesis seeks to address this limitation through the integration of a sensitivity-based analysis method to determine the effect of platform variable variation on the family performance. The result of this work is a Sensitivity-based PPCTM that facilitates the selection of common platform variables, such that modes for managing variety can be ranked and applied to the space element hierarchy. The proposed method is illustrated with three examples: the design of a line of customizable pressure vessels, universal electric motors, and finger pumps.

Abstract:
Cross-platform recommendation aims to improve recommendation accuracy through associating information from different platforms. Existing cross-platform recommendation approaches assume all cross-platform information to be consistent with each other and can be aligned. However, there remain two unsolved challenges: i) there exist inconsistencies in cross-platform association due to platform-specific disparity, and ii) data from distinct platforms may have different semantic granularities. In this paper, we propose a cross-platform association model for cross-platform video recommendation, i.e., Disparity-preserved Deep Cross-platform Association (DCA), taking platform-specific disparity and granularity difference into consideration. The proposed DCA model employs a partially-connected multi-modal autoencoder, which is capable of explicitly capturing platform-specific information, as well as utilizing nonlinear mapping functions to handle granularity differences. We then present a cross-platform video recommendation approach based on the proposed DCA model. Extensive experiments for our cross-platform recommendation framework on real-world dataset demonstrate that the proposed DCA model significantly outperform existing cross-platform recommendation methods in terms of various evaluation metrics.

Abstract:
With the comprehensive development of the Internet, a plethora of new products continue to emerge. Among these, online education products, serving as crucial tools for knowledge acquisition in the information age, have garnered significant public attention. This article delves into the present state of college students' engagement in online education, with a specific emphasis on the design strategy of self-directed learning platforms within online educational products. By delving into the theoretical underpinnings of the learning process and executing a qualitative analysis of users through Kahle's concept of the list of value (LOV), we have obtained the design model of the self-directed learning platform. Furthermore, we scrutinize and probe into the platform's requirement, function, behavior, structure, and form from a user experience standpoint, culminating in a design model for self-directed learning platforms. And combined with Choudary's platform canvas, the platform architecture of the self-directed learning platform was analyzed. Lastly, we analyzed several typical products, offering invaluable insights for future product development.

Abstract:
Purpose – In recent years, crowdfunding platforms have become very popular as intermediaries between fundraisers and funders. However, various campaigns published on the platform might be of bad quality or fraudulent, so the crowdfunding platform must be very careful when choosing the right ones. Also, the proper selection depends on the profits of a crowdfunding platform. In most cases, crowdfunding platforms mainly earn money from transaction and administration fees from successful campaigns on their platforms. While it is very hard to select successful cam-paigns, it is possible to analyse already published campaigns and forecast future revenues of crowdfunding platforms. And based on this, to select new projects which might be successful too. The aim of this work is to develop a model to forecast the revenues of crowdfunding platforms. Research methodology – In this research, comparative and statistical analysis will be used, data structuring, modelling and forecasting, performed with the ARIMA model. Findings – Main findings of this research present the three most successful campaign categories from the Kickstarter platform that receives the highest funding. Fees were calculated from those three campaign categories, and revenues for the platform were forecasted using the ARIMA model. Research limitations – Main limitations are that there were used data from a very short period of time. For better results accuracy, a longer period is needed. Practical implications – this research might be of practical use since the forecasts show that the revenues will continue to grow from the successful campaign categories. Consequently, investors should continue to support technology, games and design categories the most. At the same time, crowdfunding platforms should give more attention to these categories when choosing new projects to launch on the platform.

Abstract:
Platform-aware programming is a usual practice of HPC performance engineering programmers that is becoming more challenging due to the increasing heterogeneity of parallel computing platforms. In this paper, it is proposed a structured approach to platform-aware programming based on three concepts: platform typing, multiple dispatch, and feature detection. It has been implemented and evaluated through a proof-of-concept prototype built in Julia. It is evidenced that structured platform-aware programming provides better modularity and ease of maintenance with minor performance overhead.

Abstract:
Nowadays, there are a lot of oil and gas exploration activities all over the world, especially offshore. Oil and gas production itself has many supporting factors in the production process, of which one of them is the offshore platform. Over time, the offshore platform will experience a degradation in strength from the initial design, therefore offshore platforms need to carry out appropriate inspection, maintenance and repair (IMR) programs so that the offshore platform does not reach critical conditions and disrupt the oil and gas production process, resulting in significant losses and not achieving the planned production rates. The offshore platform design is a combination of steel structure and other materials, methods, and loads that are initially worked at the port, such as wave loads, currents, and several other parameters such as gravity, wind, and earthquake. Most of the offshore platforms that currently exist (worldwide) were made in the period of oil investment that developed between 1970 and 1980, thus, the platform's age has now reached 40 to 50 years (El-Reedy, 2012). This research data based on a platform in the Makassar strait between the islands of Kalimantan and Sulawesi. The method used in this research is the platform's design, data observation, data analysis, data processing, and statistical multilinear regression analysis. This research is investigating the degradation trend of the offshore platform and predicting the future of potential failure because of corrosion and marine growth. After the platform encounters degradation over several years, it will decrease the service life before the degradation starts to matter. The results show after data processing that, offshore platforms encounter degradation over several years, and it is presented by a graph containing the condition trend over a multi-year condition because of corrosion and marine growth, and its effect towards unity check (UC) that define structure health. Unity check value produced from allowable stress versus capacity. In this research, structural health monitoring is predicting the potential failure of the platform towards its UC effect of corrosion and marine growth, with a max of the UC value is 0.8 because its a critical value. The failure of the structure possibly would have an affect on the cost-effectiveness. Therefore it is necessary to predict when the structure will fail so that the costs used are effective. Unfortunately, there is no core data for the environmental changes every year at the platform, so the model's equation does not include environmental conditions.

Abstract:
Various virtual learning environments support the high presence of the online learning in the educational environment. In the past years, they have been developed numerous free online platforms that support the educational process. As numerous studies show, they offer a collaborative learning environment and may represent an alternative to traditional instructional process. Using the online educational platforms in higher education might offer many facilities like communication, provision of learning resources, organization, evaluation, etc. The use of these facilities may differ depending on the form of the studies: present-day or distance. Regarding the present-day studies, the online educational platforms can be used in learning and teaching activity both inside and outside the traditional classroom. This depends largely on the way that teacher designs the didactic activity. Thus, conducting the didactic activities on the educational platform just outside of the studies program may influence the way that the students are using the platform. This paper aims to analyze the way that the online open-source platform (Moodle) is used by students in their learning process. It was studied student’s preference to use the online open-source platform, Moodle, and the activities they perform on the platform to improve their learning. In order to accomplish these studies, a questionnaire on a sample of 47 third year students in a technical faculty was applied. The selected technical faculty use Moodle platform to complement traditional didactic process. Based on the obtained results, were suggested recommendations about using Moodle platform in instructional process for improving the student’s learning.

Abstract:
Platform economy is one of the highly discussed topics in recent years. Based on its principle, catering services are also being developed, which receive only marginal attention in the scientific literature. The aim of the article is to examine catering services on the principle of platform economy in Slovakia. In fulfilling it, we used the methods of descriptive statistics. The article presents the results that more than one-fifth of respondents do not know the platform economy at all. More than half of the respondents have already used services via digital platforms, but only 5.3% of respondents have used catering services in this way. Almost 40.0% of respondents are interested in providing catering services in Slovakia via digital platforms. The results of the survey show that for their further development, it is necessary to increase public awareness of digital platforms, intensify their promotion, improve legislative conditions, change people's mindsets and reduce the prices of these services.

Abstract:
A kind of direct strength analysis method of semi-submersible platform structures is presented in this paper. With the differences in shape of pontoon, column and beam being considered, the method of accumulative chord length cubic parameter spline function combined with analytic expression is adopted to generate the mesh of platform wet surface. The hydrodynamic coefficients of the platform are calculated by the three-dimensional potential flow theory of the linear hydrodynamic problem for platforms with low forward speed. The equations of platform motions are established and solved in frequency domain, and the responses of wave-induced loads on the platforms are calculated. According to the mesh of hydrodynamic computation, the fluid dynamic pressure field of platform wet surface is built, and the pressure loads on shell elements in the finite element model of the structure are calculated by the interpolation method. The calculation conditions and loads in the finite element analysis (FEA) of the platform structures are determined according to the design wave analysis approach. A computer program based on this method has been developed, and a calculation example of semi-submersible platform is illustrated. Analysis results show that this method is a satisfying approach for wave load computation and direct strength analysis of the semi-submersible platforms.
