Abstract:

Cette étude analyse les stratégies locales de dénomination des espèces végétales par les Mossé des régions du nord, du centre nord, du centre et du Plateau Central du Burkina Faso et leurs perceptions des plantes. A travers des interviews semi directes auprès de 1437 personnes âgées d’au moins 60 ans et des jeunes de moins de 40 ans personnes âgées d’au moins 40 ans des différentes localités, l’étude a pu montrer les critères de dénomination, les conceptions que les populations ont des espèces végétales ainsi que l‘impact de ces connaissances dans la conservation de la phytodiversité. 72 espèces au total ont été décrites. Elles sont réparties en 51 genres et 29 familles. Les familles dominantes sont les Commelinaceae et les Fabaceae-Mimosoideae. Dans la taxonomie locale faite sur les plantes en milieu rural Mossé, 16 critères sont utilisés. Les critères les plus cités par la population sont l’usage fait de la plante (94 %), le mysticisme lié à l’espèce (86 %), l’écologie ou le milieu de vie de l’espèce (83 %), la dualité mâle/femelle (83 %), la couleur des organes ou parties de la plante (81 %), l’origine de la plante (80 %), la morphologie foliaire (76 %), la présence d’organes saillants sur la plante (75 %) et le mode de dissémination des fruits ou des graines (74 %). Les noms botaniques attribués aux plantes varient d’une région à une autre. Les populations ont des perceptions vis-à-vis de nombreuses espèces. Ainsi, les espèces comme Stereospermum kunthianum, Calotropis procera, Ozoroa insignis, Faidherbia albida, Maytenus senegalensis et Biophytum umbraculum sont frappées de mysticisme. Elles sont toutes craintes par les populations et sont dans certaines localités à l’abri d’exploitations multiformes humaines. Cela contribue à une meilleure conservation de la biodiversité.

Abstract:

Trichostema dichotomum Linnaeus n’avait pas été observé au Québec depuis 1952, à la suite d’une récolte faite à la baie Missisquoi. En 2011, l’espèce a été redécouverte sur 3 sites de la localité de Cazaville, dans la municipalité de Saint-Anicet (MRC Le Haut-Saint-Laurent). En 2013, elle a aussi été localisée sur 2 autres sites de Cazaville et 1 site de Saint-Chrysostome, dans la même MRC. Nous présentons les caractéristiques morphologiques de cette plante, son aire de répartition en Amérique du Nord, ses habitats, les plantes compagnes et autres données concernant ses mentions québécoises. Nous ajoutons quelques notes sur l’importance de la conservation des habitats, surtout à Cazaville.

Abstract:

Une étude a été menée en périphérie de Maroua (Extrême-Nord, Cameroun) dans le but de contribuer à une gestion durable des ressources végétale sahélienne. Cette étude a identifié et a calculé la diversité des plantes ligneuses des champs de case suivant un dispositif de 20 quadrats (50 m x 50 m) dans cinq localités. Elle a aussi déterminé les catégories d’usage et les organes récoltés de chaque plante utilisée. La Méthode Accélérée de Recherche Participative (MARP) a été reprise pour collecter les données ethnobotaniques auprès de 100 ménages. Les analyses des résultats obtenus ont montré que les champs de case comportent au total, 38 espèces (26 plantes locales) réparties dans 27 genres et 26 familles. Les familles les plus abondantes ont été Méliacées (32,26%) et Mimosacées (29,26%). Acacia nilotica, Acacia albida, Balanites aegyptiaca, Moringa oleifara, Sclerocarya birrea, Tamarindus indica et Ziziphus mauritiana sont les espèces locales les plus utilisées (au moins quatre catégories d’usages). Les résultats ont montré que les champs de case peuvent être des bons systèmes de valorisation et de conservation des plantes locales.Mots clés : Champs de case, plantes ligneuses, enquête ethnobotanique et socio-économique, valorisation, usage durable. English Title: Diversity and uses of woody plants from peripheral agro-systems in the city of Maroua (Far North, Cameroon)A study was conducted around Maroua (Far North, Cameroon) with the aim of contributing to sustainable management of Sahelian plant resources. This study identified and calculated the diversity of woody plants in village fields using a system of 20 quadrats (50 mx 50 m) in five localities. It also determined the categories of use and the organs harvested from each plant used. The Accelerated Participatory Research Method (MARP) was used to collect ethnobotanical data from 100 households. Analyzes of the results obtained have shown that the village fields contain in total 38 species (26 native plants) in 27 genera and 26 families. The most abundant families were Meliaceae (32.26%) and Mimosaceae (29.26%). Acacia nilotica, Acacia albida, Balanites aegyptiaca, Moringa oleifara, Sclerocarya birrea, Tamarindus indica and Ziziphus mauritiana found to be the most commonly used local species (at least four categories of uses). Abstract:

Cette étude vise la connaissance et la recherche des plantes endémiques, rares et menacées de l’atlas tellien occidental de Tiaret. Les recherches ont été guidées par les données existantes dans la littérature afin de retrouver les plantes endémiques et rares citées pour la région de Tiaret. Nous avons exploité nos données de terrain (287 relevés floristiques) ainsi que d’autres recherches ciblées afin de localiser les taxons endémiques. Cela nous a permis d’identifier 32 plantes endémiques (7 endémiques strictes Algérie; 11 Algérie-Maroc; 4 Algérie-Tunisie; 10 Afrique du Nord). Les recherches ont permis également de reconnaitre 36 taxons rares, 4 Trigger species et 17 taxons menacées (protégés). Plusieurs taxons cités dans la bibliographie pour la région n’ont pas été retrouvés ce qui laisse à s’interroger quant à l’état de conservation et l’existence de ces taxons dans un environnement très fortement perturbé par l’action anthropique dévastatrice.

Abstract:

L’art de guérir par les plantes est connu et pratiqué en Afrique depuis bien longtemps. En Afrique de l’Ouest, comme dans le reste du continent plus de 80 % de la population à recours à la médecine traditionnelle pour ses soins de santé primaires. Le manque de médicaments essentiels, l’insuffisance des soins de santé, le cout élevé des médicaments et les habitudes socio-culturelles des populations expliquent le recours aux pratiques traditionnelles à base des plantes médicinales. La santé de ces communautés est fortement liée à la conservation et à la pérennité des plantes médicinales. Toute menace de disparition de variété végétal diminue les espoirs d’une élévation du niveau de la santé. Ainsi la médecine traditionnelle constitue pour l’Afrique en général et pour le Niger en particulier un patrimoine culturel et économique d’une importance incontestable. Au Niger, en milieu rural les mères ont toujours recours aux plantes pour se soigner et soigner leurs enfants. Les problèmes de santé infantile sont élevés, du coup pour fortifier la santé des nourrissons, les mères allaitantes font recours à un certains nombres de préparations de remède traditionnel communément appelé Djitti en langue Zarma qui se confectionne en cocktail d’un certains nombres de parties de quelques plantes médicinales reconnues comme efficace pour contrer les affections infantiles les plus courantes telles que : diarrhée, vomissements, fièvres et infections respiratoires aigües. La présente étude est centrée sur une synthèse des connaissances et motivations réelles des mères allaitantes à utiliser le Djitti afin de fortifier les jeunes enfants et à user des plantes médicinales à pouvoir galactogènes pour stimuler la lactation au Niger et en milieu rural. Une enquête a été effectuée dans la partie Ouest du pays, plus précisément dans la région de Dosso (commune rurale de Harikanassou). La technique utilisé été un entretien semi-directif à partir d’un questionnaire élaboré.

Abstract:

Ligname, Dioscorea spp. (L) est une importante denree alimentaire qui occupe une place primordiale dans le systeme agricole en Cote dIvoire. Cette plante est cependant sujette a plusieurs maladies au cours de sa culture et pendant sa conservation parmi lesquelles celles causees par divers champignons. Ainsi, les pertes occasionnees par les pourritures des tubercules en conservation, constituent un risque majeur pour la rentabilite economique et pour la securite alimentaire des consommateurs. Cette etude avait pour objectif dinitier une methohede lutte contre les pourritures des tubercules de Dioscorea alata en conservation.par lutilisation dextraits aqueux dOcimum gratissimum et de Chromolaena odorata. Pour ce faire, trois differentes doses (33 g/l 39 g/l et 50 g/l) dextraits aqueux de chacune de ces deux plantes ont ete appliquees sur des rondelles digname prealablement inoculees avec Colletotrichum sp. Les resultats ont montre que la souche fongique inocule aux rondelles de D. alata a cause dimportants degres de pourritures. Aussi, les extraits de Chomolaena odorata et dOcimum gratissimum possedent des activites antifongiques differentes. Ces activites ont ete plus elevee avec lextrait dOcimum gratissimum a 50 g/l que celui de Chomolaena odorata.

Abstract:

Des enquêtes ethnobotaniques ont été menées dans les formations forestières de la baie de Rigny-Antsiranana à Madagas- car. Ces formations forestières sont des zones clés de la biodiversité malgache et constituent la principale source d’appro- visionnement des populations locales en plantes utiles. Trente-huit informateurs d’âge compris entre 15 et 80 ans, tradipra- ticiens, mères et pères de famille et connaissant bien les plantes médicinales, ont été enquêtés en les amenant en forêt ou bien en leur montrant des spécimens d’herbier. La méthode d’enquête indivi- duelle retenue était l’entretien semi-struc- turé. Cinquante-trois espèces de plantes médicinales réparties dans 50 genres et 28 familles ont été recensées. Trente-huit espèces (68,6 %) sont endémiques de Madagascar. Les dix premières espèces les plus utilisées ont des indices de fidéli- té élevés pour les maladies indiquées. Dix-neuf espèces ont des indices de fidéli- té élevés (> 60 %) pour diverses maladies. Les maladies auxquelles les informateurs rattachent le plus grand nombre de plantes médicinales sont les affections du système digestif (maux de ventre et diarrhée), les maladies générales (les plaies et la fatigue), les infections et infestations (le paludisme), tout comme la grossesse, la naissance et la puerpéralité. Les indices de fidélité de Adansonia madagascariensis et Senna alata destinées respectivement à la lutte contre la perte de poids et l’hyperten- sion artérielle sont également élevés. Toutes ces maladies sont fréquentes à Madagascar. Les formations végétales de la baie de Rigny-Antsiranana constituent un réservoir de plantes médicinales pour la région Nord de Madagascar. Les connais- sances locales relatives à ces plantes n’ont pas été transcrites mais restent orales et risquent d’être perdues. La végétation naturelle y est menacée par la pression anthropique et l’absence de plan de conservation. Des recherches chimiques et pharmacologiques sur les espèces endémiques, et des mesures de conser- vation de la végétation, sont nécessaires pour leur valorisation et leur protection.

Abstract. Closing wheels on a row crop planter help provide good seed-soil contact during planting and can influence emergence and crop stand. Various types of closing wheels are available to producers for use on planters. Seven closing wheel types were used on a row crop planter planting cotton in a conservation tillage system during a three-year study on a sandy loam soil and a clay soil. Cotton was planted into a rye cover crop which had been rolled prior to cotton planting. The planter closing wheel type did not significantly affect emergence of cotton plants at 10 days after planting. Abstract:

La connaissance des ressources alimentaires consommées par une communauté animale dans son milieu de vie contribue énormément à la compréhension de l’éthologie et à la prise de décision de conservation de cette communauté. La présente étude qui s'est déroulée dans la zone forestière du Parc National du Mont Sangbé (PNMS) Ouest de la Côte d’Ivoire avait pour objectif de fournir les premières informations sur le régime alimentaire des chimpanzés de ce parc, par la détermination de la liste des potentielles ressources alimentaires d’origine végétale. La méthodologie a consisté à faire une recherche bibliographique, à mener des enquêtes auprès des populations riveraines et à faire des prospections pédestres dans le parc. A l’issue des différentes investigations, 17 espèces de plantes ont été répertoriées comme étant susceptibles d’être consommées par les chimpanzés du PNMS. Les principaux organes des plantes consommées sont : les fruits (59%), les feuilles (23%), les moelles de tige (18%). Ces plantes ont été répertoriées au centre et au sud-est de la zone forestière du PNMS. Cette distribution de plantes coïncide avec celle des indices de présence des chimpanzés récoltés sur le terrain. Bien que ces informations préliminaires soient très utiles, il faut cependant noter qu’elles ne représentent que les potentielles ressources alimentaires des chimpanzés. Il serait donc souhaitable de conduire des travaux pouvant permettre d’observer les individus sur le terrain afin de connaître réellement le régime alimentaire des chimpanzés du PNMS. Knowledge of the food resources consumed by an animal community in its living environment contributes enormously to the understanding of the ethology and to the conservation decision-making of this community. This study which took place in the forest zone of the Mont Sangbé National Park (PNMS) West of Côte d'Ivoire, aimed at providing the first information on the diet of chimpanzees in this park, by determining the list of potential food resources of plant origin. The methodology consisted in carrying out a bibliographical research, in carrying out surveys among neighboring populations and in carrying out pedestrian surveys in the park. At the end of the investigations, 17 species of plants were listed as being likely to be consumed by the chimpanzees of the PNMS. The main organs of the plants consumed are: fruits (59%), leaves (23%), stem pith (18%). These plants have been recorded in the center and south-east of the PNMS forest zone. This distribution of plants coincides with that of the presence indices of chimpanzees collected in the field. Although this preliminary information is very useful, it should be noted, however, that it only represents the potential food resources of chimpanzees. It would therefore be desirable to carry out work that could make it possible to observe individuals in the field in order to really know the diet of the chimpanzees in the PNMS.

Contexte et objectifs – La conservation durable de la biodiversité requiert une bonne compréhension des causes de son déclin. Mis à part les activités humaines, les changements climatiques se révèlent comme la principale menace qui pèse sur la biodiversité au 21ème siècle. Notre étude vise à déterminer l’impact du changement climatique sur les Ptéridophytes au Togo.Méthodologie – En se basant sur 2865 occurrences de Ptéridophytes couvrant toute l’Afrique de l’Ouest et regroupés en 5 groupes écologiques, les distributions actuelle et future des Ptéridophytes ont été modélisées grâce à Maxent. La capacité de conservation des aires protégées du Togo vis-à-vis de ces plantes a été évaluée.Résultats clés – Nos résultats montrent que 9,81% du pays peut abriter simultanément l’ensemble des groupes de ptéridophytes. Les précipitations des périodes sèches, l’isothermalité et la saisonnalité de la température sont les variables climatiques qui contraignent le plus leurs niches en Afrique de l’Ouest et particulièrement au Togo. Exceptés les taxons thermophiles dont les zones climatiquement favorables devraient quasiment doubler à l’horizon 2070, les niches des autres groupes devraient se restreindre drastiquement au Togo. Seules les aires protégées du tiers sud des Monts Togo pourront garantir la conservation des niches climatiques actuelles et futures des ptéridophytes dans le pays.Conclusions – Le sud des Monts Togo constituera probablement un refuge climatique pour les ptéridophytes au Togo. Toutefois, la faiblesse de l’étendue des aires protégées dans cette partie du pays pourrait constituer une source de vulnérabilité pour ces plantes. Apart from human activities, climate change is the major threat to global biodiversity during the 21st century. Our study aims to determine the impact of climate change on pteridophytes in Togo.Methods – Based on 2865 occurrences of pteridophytes covering West Africa and grouped into 5 ecological groups, current and future distributions of pteridophytes were modelized using Maxent. The conservation capacity of Togolese protected areas for these plants was assessed.Key results – Our results show that 9.81% of the country can shelter simultaneously all groups of pteridophytes. Precipitations of the driest periods, isothermality and temperature seasonality are the climatic variables which constrain the most their niche in West Africa and particularly in Togo. Apart from thermophilic taxa whose climatically suitable niche is expected to nearly double by 2070, niche of all other group should be drastically restricted in Togo. Only protected areas in the southern third of Togo Mountains would guarantee current and future climatic niches for pteridophytes in the country.Conclusions – Southern Togo Mountains will probably constitute a climatic refugium for Pteridophytes in Togo. However, the small extent of protected areas in this part of the country would be a source of vulnerability for these plants.

Abstract:

Traditional use of plants constitutes an important activity in Malagasy life, especially in the countryside. The Sihanaka group is found in the east of Lake Alaotra and is the dominant cultural group in the lake region, including in the Fokontany of Andreba Gara, near Park Bandro, in the east of Lake Alaotra, in Ambatondrazaka district where the study was conducted. The Sihanaka holds traditional knowledge on plant uses and makes use of this knowledge in their daily lives. The objective of this study was to describe the use of aquatic plants in the region to better understand the importance of the Alaotra wetlands in the lives of local people. Surveys conducted among the people of Andreba, including one traditional chief (the Tangalamena) and one healer, revealed 55 useful species of aquatic plants, grouped into 41 genera and 23 families. Most species were used for their medicinal and veterinary virtues (32 species), for animal food (17 species), as utensils and tools (16 species), for cultural uses (10 species), and for human food (9 species). Leaves (76%) are the most exploited plant parts. The species with the most uses were Cyperus papyrus subsp. madagascariensis (Willd.) Kük. with 26 types of use recorded, then Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. (19 types of use), Aeschynomene elaphroxylon (Guill. & Perr.) Taub. and Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms (12 types of use each). Nymphaea nouchali, Cyperus papyrus subsp. madagascariensis and Phragmites australis were the species most frequently cited by informants, indicating that they are important for the local population. The most frequently cited types of use included joro, namely ancestor’s invocation, food, materials for house walls construction, herbal teas to treat ailments, and fencing or demarcation of land boundaries. This study highlighted the importance of the Alaotra wetlands as a source of useful plants for the local population. Sustainable management of Lake Alaotra is therefore not just necessary for biodiversity conservation, but also for maintaining local livelihoods. L’utilisation traditionnelle des plantes constitue une activité importante dans la vie des Malgaches, plus particulièrement dans les campagnes. Le groupe Sihanaka est rencontré à l’est du lac Alaotra et constitue le groupe culturel dominant dans la région du lac, y compris dans le Fokontany d’Andreba Gara, près du Parc Bandro, à l’Est du Lac Alaotra, dans le district d’Ambatondrazaka où l’étude a été menée. Les Sihanaka détiennent des connaissances traditionnelles sur l’utilisation des plantes et utilisent ces connaissances dans leur vie quotidienne. L’objectif de cette étude était de décrire l’utilisation des plantes aquatiques dans la région afin de mieux comprendre l’importance des zones humides de l’Alaotra dans la vie des populations locales. Des enquêtes menées auprès de la population d’Andreba, y compris auprès d’un chef traditionnel (le Tangalamena) et d’un guérisseur, ont révélé 55 espèces utiles de plantes aquatiques, regroupées dans 41 genres et 23 familles. La plupart des espèces étaient utilisées pour leurs vertus médicinales et vétérinaires (32 espèces), pour l’alimentation des animaux (17 espèces), en tant qu’ustensiles et outils (16 espèces), pour des usages culturels (10 espèces) et pour l’alimentation humaine (9 espèces). Les feuilles (76%) sont les parties de plante les plus exploitées. Les espèces ayant le plus d’utilisations étaient Cyperus papyrus subsp. madagascariensis (Willd.) Kük. avec 26 types d’utilisation recensés, puis Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. (19 types d’utilisation), Aeschynomene elaphroxylon (Guill. & Perr.) Taub. et Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms (12 types d’utilisation chacune). Nymphaea nouchali, Cyperus papyrus subsp. madagascariensis et Phragmites australis etaient les espèces les plus fréquemment citées par les informateurs, ce qui indique qu’elles sont importantes pour la population locale. Les types d’utilisation les plus fréquemment cités comprenaient le joro à savoir l’invocation des ancêtres, l’alimentation, les matériaux pour la construction des murs, les tisanes pour traiter les maladies et la construction de clôtures ou démarcation des limites de terrains. Cette étude a souligné l’importance des zones humides de l’Alaotra en tant que source de plantes utiles pour la population locale. La gestion durable du lac Alaotra n’est donc pas seulement nécessaire à la conservation de la biodiversité mais également au maintien des moyens de subsistance locaux

Aromatic and Medicinal Plants (AMP) represent a large part of biodiversity. However, in the absence of a detailed record of this diversity, research and AMP development projects are generally limited to a small portion of ethnobotanical heritage. To guide prospection, exploitation and conservation studies of the existing potential, a comprehensive evaluation of the natural diversity of AMP is required. The western Rif region in northern Morocco, which area represents less than 1% of national territory, is home to about 50% of the Moroccan floristic richness (2053 species and infraspecific taxa). This heritage includes 630 taxa from which only 23 are currently exploited and merely 57% are recognized by ethno-botanists. Among these assets, a list is drawn up containing 106 taxa with a special conservation status (very rare or rare taxa, and / or endemic and / or threatened) and some of which are widely exploited. From a phytosociological point of view and based on an available database of 449 floristic samples, natural forest stands and matorrals contain about 27% of all MAP of the study area. These AMP organize almost half the floristic composition of sclerophyllous forests (oleaster, kermes oak and cork oak forest) and about a third of the richness of each of the other groups analyzed (thermophilic formations, pure fir, limestone mountains forest, calcifuges deciduous, maritime pine, matorrals). Mountain groups are the richest in exclusive, endemic, rare and endangered AMP.

Les messicoles, plantes sauvages des espaces cultivés, sont souvent considérées comme des adventices indésirables par le monde agricole. Ce constat, ainsi que l’intensification des modes de production, ont conduit à une régression généralisée de ces espèces. En Poitou-Charentes, des actions d’inventaire et de conservation des messicoles ont été menées pendant trois ans, accompagnées par une sensibilisation des acteurs du monde agricole à l’importance de leur préservation. Financé par la DREAL Nouvelle-Aquitaine, la région Nouvelle-Aquitaine et une partie en autofinancement, le programme associatif Messicoles en Poitou-Charentes, successeur d’un premier programme similaire réalisé entre 2005 et 2009, se décline en trois volets : inventaire des messicoles à l’échelle de l’ex-région, communication avec outils pédagogiques et actions de conservation en partenariat avec le monde agricole et les gestionnaires d’espaces naturels. Les associations Charente Nature, Deux-Sèvres Nature Environnement, Nature Environnement 17, Vienne Nature et la Ligue pour la protection des oiseaux ont ainsi travaillé conjointement dans la préservation des messicoles en sensibilisant les exploitants et les propriétaires de parcelles hébergeant des espèces à fort enjeu.

Dans les écosystèmes forestiers tropicaux, les humains utilisent de longue date les espèces végétales utiles, sources de nourriture, de fibre, de combustible ou de médication. Parmi ces produits forestiers non ligneux, certains d'entre eux ont progressivement été mis en culture, posant des questions tant sur les impacts évolutifs des interactions entre plantes et hommes que sur la durabilité des modes de gestion actuels de ces ressources. C'est le cas pour le safoutier (Dacryodes edulis, Burseraceae), un arbre fruitier emblématique d'Afrique centrale. Dans cette thèse, la dynamique de la diversité cultivée du safoutier est abordée via une approche interdisciplinaire alliant génétique des populations et ethnoécologie, afin de comprendre d’une part l’histoire évolutive de l’espèce sur le temps long, d’autre part les effets des changements contemporains de ses modes de culture. L’approche génétique centrée sur l'histoire évolutive du safoutier a permis d’identifier différents groupes génétiques sur son aire de distribution. Les patrons de distribution de l’ADN chloroplastique semblent résulter des événements de glaciation du Quaternaire plutôt que de la mise en culture de l'espèce. L’accent mis sur les savoirs des cultivateurs dans l’approche ethnoécologique met en lumière la nomenclature fine qu’ils mobilisent, et les préférences différentes qu’ils ont en fonction des usages du fruit : une bascule s'opère en faveur du critère de la taille du fruit chez ceux destinant leur production au marché urbain. Enfin, le croisement des deux approches a permis de mettre en valeur les effets des réseaux informels d'échanges de semences sur la distribution de la diversité génétique. Les semences utilisées pour planter des arbres en ville proviennent ainsi en majorité d'échanges sur de longues distances. En conséquence, des niveaux de diversité identiques, voire supérieurs, sont présents dans les aires urbaines par rapport au milieu rural. Ensemble, ces résultats permettent de conclure qu'il existe une grande diversité de connaissances, de pratiques et d'usages autour du safoutier, qui n'engendrent pas, à ce stade, d'effets néfastes sur sa diversité intra-spécifique. Le safoutier se présente comme un modèle stratégique pour étudier l'effet des pratiques humaines sur la diversité génétique en Afrique centrale, de nombreuses questions de recherche demeurant quant à l'origine de sa mise en culture et de sa diffusion.

Les méthodes actuelles d’exploitation forestière tendent à diminuer la proportion de forêts anciennes et à fragmenter le paysage forestier, ce qui peut causer des inconvénients à certains groupes d’espèces associés à ces habitats. Pour pallier ce problème de conservation dans un paysage qui comporte peu de forêts anciennes, certains types de peuplements qui ont un bon potentiel de restauration écologique pourraient être considérés dans les stratégies de conservation. Dans cette étude, la structure et la biodiversité de sapinières mixtes de seconde venue qui ont subi une épidémie de tordeuse des bourgeons de l’épinette ( Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.)), de 1974 à 1986, ont été analysées quant à leur ressemblance à celles de sapinières mixtes anciennes. Trois critères structuraux ont été analysés et deux groupes reconnus pour contenir des espèces indicatrices de forêts anciennes ont été retenus, soit les plantes invasculaires et champignons saprophytes et les oiseaux forestiers. Les sapinières mixtes de seconde venue présentent des caractéristiques structurales qui s’apparentent à celles des sapinières mixtes anciennes et comportent des espèces appartenant à des groupes indicateurs de forêts anciennes. Ainsi, les sapinières mixtes de seconde venue étudiées démontrent une résilience et possèdent un potentiel de restauration de forêts anciennes.

Les recherches se sont basées essentiellement sur les 124 relevés phytoecologiques réalisés à travers les secteurs O1 et O2 ainsi que certains sorties ciblant les stations de présence des espèces endémiques signalées pour la région d›Oran dans la littérature. Ces recherches de terrain ont conduit à l›identification de 17 taxons endémiques dont certains sont très rares comme Brassic aspinescens et Helianthemum maritimum. D’autres espèces ayant été ciblées par les recherches n’ont pas été retrouvées ce qui renforce l’hypothèse de disparition de certaines d’entre elles. En plus de cette première liste des endémiques réellement observés dans la région depuis l’indépendance du pays, les données sur leurs aspects chorologiques, écologiques et biogéographiques sont exposées et discutés. Grasses are one of the best documented plant families worldwide in terms of taxonomy, but they are still poorly known in Madagascar. Our understanding of their diversity remains incomplete since grasses and grasslands are assumed by many tobe weeds and degraded wastelands. This project aimed to list thegrasses in Isalo National Park (NP) in order to understand theirdiversity and endemicity, as well as the history of Isalo’s grasslands. Examination of herbarium specimens and new field inventories allowed us to confirm 589 records of grass occurrences in ourstudy area. They were assigned to 112 species, of which 38 species are new records for Isalo NP. The Isalo grass flora includes seven of the eleven Poaceae subfamilies present in Madagascar and is particularly rich in Panicoideae, which make up 65% of the species. Nearly 22% of the grass species of Isalo are endemic to Madagascar, of which three species and one variety are restricted to Isalo massif, including two unusual ground cover species Tristachya humbertii A.Camus and Tristachya [Isalus isalensis]. Open grasslands harbour the highest diversity of grass species, followed closely by riparian forests. The history of the management of Isalo NP by the Bara people, as well as the endemism and the native origin of its grasses and other species are consistent with an ancient origin of Isalo’s ecosystems. We urge that the conservation of Isalo’s grassy ecosystems, as well as that of the plants and animals that inhabit them be prioritized.Les graminées sont parmi les familles de plantes les mieux documentées au niveau mondial en termes de taxonomie, mais sont encore mal connues à Madagascar. Notre compréhension de leur diversité reste incomplète, vu que les graminées et les savanes sont considérées par beaucoup comme des mauvaises herbes et des friches dégradées. Ce projet visait à établir une liste des graminées connues du Parc National (PN) de l’Isalo, afin de comprendre leur diversité et leur endémicité, ainsi que l’histoire des écosystèmes herbeux de l’Isalo. L’examen des spécimens d'herbiers et les nouveaux inventaires sur terrains nous ont permis de générer 589 occurrences de graminées de notre site d’étude. Elles ont été attribuées à 112 espèces de Poaceae, dont 38 sont de nouvelles collectes pour le massif de l’Isalo. La flore herbacée du massif de l'Isalo comprend sept des onze sous-familles de Poaceae présentes à Madagascar et est particulièrement riche en Panicoideae qui représentent 65% des espèces. Près de 22% des espèces de graminées de l’Isalo sont endémiques de Madagascar, dont trois espèces et une variété sont restreintes à Isalo, y compris les deux espèces de plantes couvre-sols inhabituelles Tristachya humbertii A.Camus et Tristachya [Isalus isalensis]. Les prairies ouvertes abritent la plus grande diversité d'espèces de graminées, suivies de près par les forêts ripicoles. L’histoire de la gestion du PN de l’Isalo par les habitants de la région du groupe Bara, ainsi que l’endémisme et l’origine autochtone de ses graminées et autres espèces sont cohérents avec une origine ancienne des écosystèmes de l’Isalo. Nous préconisons instamment que la conservation de ces prairies et savanes de l'Isalo, ainsi que les plantes et les animaux qui les habitent soit priorisée.

Abstract:

Différents points d’impact des mesures de suspension des farines et graisses animales ont été identifiés. En matière de technologie des aliments, les répercussions prévisibles sont liées au retrait des graisses animales avec un risque de plus grande friabilité des granulés et des difficultés d’incorporation de quantités importantes de graisses. Au plan nutritionnel, s’il existe des solutions techniques pour remplacer les farines et les graisses animales, on peut cependant prévoir des difficultés d’utilisation de certaines matières premières (tourteau de soja à taux plus élevés, huile de palme, huiles de récupération…), des perturbations de la consommation d’aliments, voire des baisses de performances (volailles surtout) et une surexcrétion d’eau (dinde, poule pondeuse) avec ses conséquences sanitaires. L’impact sur la qualité des produits animaux provient essentiellement du remplacement des graisses animales par des matières grasses d’origine végétale le plus souvent insaturées qui peut se traduire par des défauts de présentation des carcasses et une moins bonne conservation des produits animaux plus sensibles à l’oxydation. Concernant la sécurité alimentaire pour le consommateur, on peut s’attendre à un accroissement des risques potentiels d’ordre chimique (contaminants, mycotoxines et autres substances toxiques produites par les plantes) et biologique (bactéries pathogènes) associés à l’importation de matières premières de provenances multiples, souvent mal contrôlées et dépourvues de traçabilité. Certains de ces risques sont cependant encadrés par des réglementations spécifiques de l’Union Européenne. On peut s’attendre également à des difficultés de traçabilité pour les filières fonctionnant avec des signes officiels de qualité ou des certifications, en regard de l’importation de matières premières standard et OGM non différenciées. En revanche, il n’y a pas de risques identifiés associés aux plantes OGM ayant à ce jour reçu une autorisation de commercialisation. Enfin en matière d’environnement, il faut prévoir un arrêt du recyclage (phosphates " cachés " des farines de viande et d’os) et des prélèvements accrus sur des ressources non renouvelables (phosphates minéraux), ainsi que des risques de rejets plus importants de phosphore (biodisponibilité plus faible du phosphore végétal) et d’éléments traces métalliques (absents des farines animales) provenant des phosphates minéraux.

An ethnobotanical survey was conducted among traditional healers and herbalists in eastern Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo) to identify medicinal plant species traditionally used to treat diabetes mellitus. Fifty traditional healers and herbalists selected through the snowball sampling method were interviewed about plant species used in indigenous medicine to treat diabetes mellitus in Kinshasa city. Cited plant taxa were collected and identified at the Herbarium of the Faculty of Science & Technology, University of Kinshasa. Their ecological status was determined. Most respondents were male (58%), with a sex ratio 1.38. According to the marital status of respondents, single persons represent 42%, followed by married (32%), divorced (20%), and widowed (06%), respectively. Out of 50 persons interviewed, the most represented age group comprises individuals of ˃50 years. Most informants have a secondary school educational background (46%). In Kinshasa city, medicinal plants for treating diabetes mellitus are divided into 19 families, 25 genera, and 27 species. The culture/crop and forest plant species represent the most (37.04% each). The ecological and phytogeographical spectra revealed a predominance of trees (33.33%), microphanerophytes (48.15%), mesophytes (85.19%), sarcochores (66.67%), and pantropical species (40.74%). 68% of the population of Tshangu district in Kinshasa city uses Traditional Medicine, against 32% who are interested in modern medicine. 63% of them believe that medicinal plants can cure diabetes, 31.5% believe that plants improve their health, and 15% of the population surveyed believe that medicinal plants have side effects. The leaves are the most used part (40.74%), followed by the roots (25.93), fruits (18.52%), grains (7.41%), flowers, and stems (3.7% each). Promoting ex-situ conservation of some of these useful medicinal plants through in vitro cell culture will permit the preservation of these phyto-resources. The ecological and phytogeographical spectra revealed a predominance of trees (33.33%), microphanerophytes (48.15%), mesophytes (85.19%), sarcochores (66.67%), and pantropical species (40.74%). 68% of the population of Tshangu district in Kinshasa city uses Traditional Medicine, against 32% who are interested in modern medicine. 63% of them believe that medicinal plants can cure diabetes, 31.5% believe that plants improve their health, and 15% of the population surveyed believe that medicinal plants have side effects. The leaves are the most used part (40.74%), followed by the roots (25.93), fruits (18.52%), grains (7.41%), flowers, and stems (3.7% each). Promoting ex-situ conservation of some of these useful medicinal plants through in vitro cell culture will permit the preservation of these phyto-resources. Abstract:

Cet article se focalise sur la nécessité d'intégrer, de réconcilier les pratiques coutumières des peuples riverains (Pygmées et Lega) avec les pratiques de gestion moderne de conservation de la biodiversité afin de préserver et de protéger la Réserve Naturelle d'Itombwe (RNI, réserve de catégorie VI de l'UICN). Pour récolter les données sur le terrain dans les villages Lega et Pygmées proches de la RNI, trois techniques ont été utilisées (documentaire, focus group et entretiens semi-structurés). Les résultats obtenus nous ont permis de découvrir les modes de protection de la nature et les normes locales propices au développement durable dans la gestion et la conservation de la nature. Ils montrent qu'il est utile de prendre en compte les pratiques traditionnelles et les expériences vécues pour comprendre l'importance du monde vivant de ces deux peuples. Certaines plantes et certains animaux protégés par les Us et coutumes de deux peuples sont aussi des espèces protégées et interdites par la Convention sur le Commerce International des Espèces de Faune et de Flore Sauvages Menacées d'Extinction (CITES). Malheureusement, la forte croissance démographique, le christianisme, la modernité ainsi que la relation entre la pauvreté et la culture traditionnelle ont remis en cause ces pratiques culturelles et le nonrespect de coutume. Ces croyances, loin d’être stables et immobiles, sont souvent capables d’intégrer des formes de nouveauté et de s’adapter à des modalités variables. En dépit de ces obligations, les occasions s’offrent au niveau coutumier pour la bonne gestion de la nature. Il revient aux acteurs de la conservation tant nationale qu’internationale de s’approprier ces pratiques costumières pour une bonne gestion de la biodiversité. This paper focuses on the need to integrate and reconcile the customs and practices of the riparian peoples (Pygmies and Lega) with the practice of modern management and conservation of biodiversity in order to preserve and protect the Itombwe Nature Reserve (INR, which is an IUCN Category VI Reserve). To collect field data in Lega and Pygmy villages bordering the INR, three techniques was used (documentary, focus group and individual interviews). The studies uncovered ways of protecting nature and local sacredness that are conducive to sustainable development in nature management and conservation. They show us that it is useful to take into account traditional practices and lived experiences to understand the importance of the living world of these two peoples. In addition, some plants and animals protected by local knowledge are among the species protected and prohibited by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). The strong demographic growth, Christianity, modernity as well as the grafting between poverty and traditional culture have challenged these cultural practices and the respect of customs. These beliefs, far from being stable and immobile, are often able to integrate forms of novelty and adapt to changing modalities. In spite of these obligations, opportunities exist at the customary level the good management of nature. It is up to national and international conservation actors to appropriate these customary practices for good biodiversity management.

Afin de contribuer à la valorisation et à la gestion durable des Loranthaceae parasites des plantes ligneuses, une approche associant deux méthodes a été adoptée. L’une, basée sur des relevés de surface et l’autre sur une enquête ethnobotanique relative aux connaissances locales des Loranthaceae dans 9 Arrondissements de la Région de l’Extrême-Nord du Cameroun. Au total, 4 genres (Agelanthus, Globimetula, Phragmanthera et Tapinanthus) et 7 espèces parasites (Agelanthus dodoneifolius, Globimetula braunii, Phragmanthera capitata, Tapinanthus bangwensis, T. belvisii, T. globiferus et T. ophiodes) ont été inventoriés et identifiés dans les Monts Mandara. Il ressort aussi que ces espèces parasites sont utilisées en pharmacopée dans des recettes médicinales et magico-religieuses (45,56%), pour traiter des infertilités (32,70%) et des troubles mentaux (32,36%). Les résultats ont aussi montré que Mangifera indica (35,74%) et Senna singueana (34,41%) sont les hôtes des parasites les plus sollicités. Aussi ont-ils révélé que la commercialisation des Loranthaceae constitue une source de revenu économique et une ressource importante en pharmacopée pour les populations locales des Monts Mandara. The herbarium Trèmols, preserved in the Botanical Institute of Barcelona (IBB), was created during the second half of the 19th century by the Catalan chemist and botanist Frederic Trèmols Borrell (Cadaqués 1831–1900). He was a member of important scientific institutions, including the Real Acadèmia de Ciències i Arts de Barcelona, the Societat Botànica Barcelonesa, the Société Botanique de France, and the Société Helvétique pour l’Échange des Plantes. The value of this herbarium lies in the large volume of specimens that it preserves (12,953) and the high percentage (61.9%) of material of foreign origin that it contains. The Trèmols herbarium was completely digitised in 2019 as part of a wider study that is aimed to classify, digitise, document, review, and, finally, make the IBB historical herbaria available to the scientific community. Herein, we provide a general overview of the almost 13,000 specimens of this collection, which can give valuable insight into the flora that existed more than 100 years ago.

Située dans le sud du canal de Mozambique, l’île Europa est l’une des îles les moins connues de la région malgache. Nous avons réalisé six séjours dans l’île, de 1993 à 1996, afin d’évaluer l’état des écosystèmes terrestres, de recenser les populations nicheuses d’oiseaux de mer et d’identifier les facteurs susceptibles de réduire la biodiversité de l’île. Les résultats obtenus montrent que l’île Europa est une des îles les moins perturbées de l’océan Indien occidental. Les différentes tentatives d’occupation humaine ayant eu lieu depuis la fin du XIXe siècle sont probablement à l’origine de l’introduction de plusieurs espèces de plantes et d’animaux. De plus, la réalisation au début du XXe siècle d’une culture de sisal (Agave sisalina et Furcraea foetida) a provoqué la disparition d’une partie de la forêt sèche indigène (10 %). Cependant, la plus grande partie de l’île n’a pas subi de perturbations importantes depuis les premières installations humaines et la végétation actuelle est, dans ces endroits, probablement proche de son état originel. De ce fait, la faune des vertébrés est riche (7 espèces de reptiles et 13 espèces d’oiseaux dont 8 espèces d’oiseaux de mer). Les populations d’oiseaux de mer sont plus grandes que ce qui était estimé précédemment, en particulier celles des grands Pélécaniformes (Paille-en-queue à brins rouges Phaethon rubricauda, Fou à pieds rouges Sula sula, Frégate du Pacifique Fregata minor et Frégate ariel F. ariel ) et celle de la Sterne Fuligineuse (Sterna fuscata). Deux autres espèces, le Puffin d’Audubon (Puffinus Iherminieri) et le Paille-en-queue à brins blancs (Phaethon lepturus) ont un intérêt biogéographique remarquable. La principale menace identifiée est la prédation des œufs et poussins d’oiseaux de mer par le Rat noir (Rattus rattus), introduit. L’impact du Corbeau pie (Corvus albus), espèce anthropophile, et de la Chouette effraie (Tyto alba) comme prédateurs d’oiseaux de mer est discuté. Trois autres sources de risques potentiels de modification de l’habitat, en particulier de la forêt sèche, ont été identifiées : le surpâturage par les chèvres, les incendies naturels ou accidentels et l’invasion du milieu par le sisal. Nous proposons un programme de conservation pour éviter la perte de biodiversité. La première étape, actuellement en cours, consiste à quantifier les menaces. La seconde étape sera de restaurer l’île dans son ensemble, par le contrôle ou l’éradication des espèces animales ou végétales introduites pouvant mettre en danger les écosystèmes terrestres indigènes.

Conservation officials work to manage complex and interacting human-environmental systems, where balancing needs between the two systems can become a source of tension. This study presents information on the use of natural resources by, and the health and welfare of, rural communities within and near Ankarafantsika National Park (ANP) in northwestern Madagascar. We focus on behaviors that are difficult for natural resource managers to measure themselves, including the hunting of threatened and protected wildlife and on sensitive information about humanwealth, health, and food security. We surveyed 41 9 households and measured the health of 1 860 individuals in 1 8 communities adjacent to or within the boundaries of ANP. We found a very high prevalence of child malnutrition, illness, and food insecurity and a heavy reliance on natural products to meet subsistence needs. More than 90% of the population reported that they hunted wildlife and harvested wild vegetables at least one day during the prior week as a direct means to cope with their food insecurity. Further, we found a high reliance on the forest for both healthcare and the building of adequate shelter. Efforts to improve overall food security would likely improve both human welfare and the long-term conservation of the threatened wildlife and habitat of Ankarafantsika. These data can help both conservation and community livelihood programs to find integrated solutions to the shared challenges of improving the well-being of human populations and the protection of Madagascar’s unique, endemic, and highly threatened biodiversity. Les gestionnaires oeuvrant pour la protection de la nature sont généralement confrontés à des systèmes socio-écologiques complexes et interactifs dans lesquels la recherche de l’équilibre entre les besoins de ces deux systèmes peut s’avérer être une source de tension. Cette étude présente des informations sur l'utilisation des ressources naturelles par les communautés rurales riveraines du parc national d'Ankarafantsika (PNA) dans le nord-ouest de Madagascar, ainsi que sur la santé et le bien-être de ces communautés. L’étude s’est en particulier orientée sur les comportementsdifficiles à mesurer pour les gestionnaires de ressources naturelles, à savoir la chasse d'animaux sauvages menacés et protégés et les informations portant sur l’opulence, la santé et la sécurité alimentaire des gens. Une enquête a été réalisée auprès de 41 9 ménages et l’état de santé de 1 860 personnes a été mesuré dans 1 8 communautés vivant à la périphérie ou à l’intérieur des limites du PNA. Une très forte prévalence de la malnutrition infantile a été observée ainsi que diverses pathologies, une insécurité alimentaire et une dépendance importante à l'égard des produits naturels pour répondre aux besoins de subsistance. Plus de 90% de la population a déclaré qu'elle avait chassé des animaux et récolté des plantes sauvages au moins un jour au cours de la semaine précédente, à titre de moyen direct pour faire face à l' insécurité alimentaire. Une forte dépendance à l'égard des forêts a également été notée pour les produits destinés à la santé et la construction de maisons. Les efforts visant à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire dans son ensemble pourraient vraisemblablement améliorer le bien-être humain aussi bien que la conservationà long terme de la faune et des habitats menacés de l'Ankarafantsika. Ces données peuvent aider les programmes de conservation et de subsistance de la communauté à trouver des solutions intégrées aux problèmes communs de l’amélioration du bien-être des populations humaines et de la protection de la biodiversité unique, endémique et hautement menacée de Madagascar.

Des alternatives à l’utilisation de tourteau de soja sont potentiellement disponibles dans les systèmes agroforestiers et les systèmes mixtes polyculture-élevage intégrés, bien que l’offre soit plus importante pour les ruminants que les monogastriques non herbivores. La valeur nutritionnelle des ressources n’est pas la seule règle de décision : l’évaluation des stratégies alimentaires, dans une approche multicritère, doit considérer les différents services productifs et non productifs. Elle doit en outre prendre en compte la compétition possible entre l’utilisation des ressources par l’Homme et l’animal. Dans le cadre des systèmes mixtes polyculture-élevage intégrés, les ressources duales, dont la valorisation intégrale concilie les besoins de l’Homme et de l’animal, occupent une place stratégique : graines et fanes de légumineuses, feuilles et tubercules de manioc ou de patate douce etc. Les légumineuses annuelles, pérennes ou arbustives présentent des atouts agronomiques et environnementaux importants dans les systèmes intégrés par leur capacité à fixer l’azote. Le rôle de recyclage et la faible emprise sur le foncier agricole des nouvelles sources d’aliments (plantes aquatiques, microorganismes, insectes, vers de terre) sont aussi un atout pour leur développement. La mise au point de technologies adaptées pour lever les verrous (facteurs antinutritionnels, conservation…) permettra de valoriser pleinement le potentiel de nombreuses ressources protéiques.

Abstract:

La tomate-cerise est un fruit très sujet aux infections fongiques qui peuvent causer des dégâts considérables dans les cultures et lors de la conservation. Les alternarioses comptent parmi les altérations les plus répandues et dangereuses pour ce fruit. Elles sont causées par Alternaria alternata ou d’autres espèces appartenant au même genre. Dans ce travail, nous avons testé l’activité antifongique d’extraits méthanoliques de cinq plantes récoltées dans la région de Jijel (Algérie) sur A. alternata. L’activité a d’abord été testée in vitro, puis sur des plants de tomates-cerises cultivés sous serre : les extraits ont été appliqués sur des plants sains, avant l’infection, afin de tester leur action préventive, et après l’infection pour déterminer s’ils sont capables de traiter l’alternariose. Les résultats ont montré que les extraits de Rosmarinus officinalis et Lavandula angustifolia étaient les plus actifs in vitro sur A. alternata. L’observation microscopique de la moisissure a indiqué que ces extraits agissaient en inhibant sa production de dictyospores. L’activité antifongique testée sur les plants cultivés sous serre a révélé que l’extrait de R. officinalis était toujours le plus actif. Venaient ensuite les extraits de L. angustifolia et Punica granatum qui n’ont pas permis la protection des plants contre l’alternariose, mais qui ont néanmoins donné une guérison totale à la fin du traitement. Les extraits de Quercus suber et Eucalyptus globulus étaient les moins actifs. Ils n’ont permis ni la prévention, ni la guérison complète des plants. Le comptage des dictyospores réalisé sur les fruits à la fin du traitement a confirmé les résultats obtenus pour les cultures sous serre.

Despite more than a century of research on effective biotechnological methods to reproduce various plant species, microclonal reproduction continues to be an important tool for large- scale production. The clonal seedlings of important species maintain genetic fidelity and do not contain pests. In some cases, microclonal propagation is the only method that contributes to the maintenance and economic value of specific agricultural plant species. Microclonal reproduction as a method has solved many phytosanitary problems and has allowed both expansion and access to high-quality plants for producers from different countries and economic conditions, thus effectively contributing to the expansion of agriculture now and in the foreseeable future. Currently, this method is widely used in the creation of planting material for crops for agriculture and cultivation of crops of industrial floriculture, fruit, berry crops and woody plants. Thanks to this method, it is possible to createin vitro banks of rare and valuable plant genotypes. Modern technologies of clonal micro-multiplication are at the stage of industrial flow, which quickly responds to market demands. The analysis of domestic and foreign sources of scientific research on microclonal plant propagation has shown that, at the present time, the cost of its use is quite high and requires the presence of laboratories with appropriate equipment and highly qualified staff. Modification and adaptation of the method of microclonal reproduction of plants contributes to the implementation of the morphogenetic potential, determines the specific features of the source material, the type of explant, its physiological state, the composition of nutrient media, and cultivation conditions.

Over the past 170 years, the Late Devonian Miguasha biota from eastern Canada has yielded a diverse aquatic assemblage including 20 species of lower vertebrates (anaspids, osteostracans, placoderms, acanthodians, actinopterygians and sarcopterygians), a more limited invertebrate assemblage, and a continental component including plants, scorpions and millipedes. Originally interpreted as a freshwater lacustrine environment, recent paleontological, taphonomic, sedimentological and geochemical evidence corroborates a brackish estuarine setting. Over 18,000 fish specimens have been recovered showing various modes of fossilization, including uncompressed material and soft-tissue preservation. Most vertebrates are known from numerous, complete, articulated specimens. Exceptionally well-preserved larval and juvenile specimens have been identified for 14 out of the 20 species of fishes, allowing growth studies. Numerous horizons within the Escuminac Formation are now interpreted as either Konservat– or Konzentrat–Lagerstätten.SOMMAIREAu cours des 170 dernières années, le biote du Dévonien supérieur de Miguasha de l’Est du Canada a fourni un assemblage aquatique diversifié, comprenant 20 espèces de vertébrés inférieurs (anaspides, ostéostracés, placodermes, acanthodiens, actinoptérygiens et sarcoptérygiens) et un assemblage peu diversifié d’invertébrés ainsi qu’une composante continentale, représentée par des plantes, des scorpions et des mille-pattes. Les investigations ont été faites sur les fleurs de Cajanus cajan en vue d’estimer l’impact de l’activité de Dactylurina staudingeri sur la pollinisation, la production en gousses et en graines à Dang, en 2016 et 2017. Pour chacune de ces années, 540 boutons floraux ont été étiquetés sur 120 plantes réparties en quatre traitements: 120 fleurs laissées en libre pollinisation, 120 fleurs protégées des insectes, 200 fleurs protégées, puis découvertes, visitées exclusivement par D. staudingeri et de nouveau protégées et 100 fleurs protégées, découvertes et à nouveau protégées, sans visite d’insectes ou de tout autre organisme. Le taux de fructification, le nombre moyen de graines par gousse et le pourcentage de graines normales ont été comparés entre ces traitements. Sur 33 espèces d’insectes recensées, D. staudingeri était majoritaire avec 12,19% de 6037 visites. Cette abeille prélevait fortement le nectar et récoltait faiblement le pollen au niveau des fleurs de C. cajan. La vitesse moyenne de butinage était de 7,14 fleurs/min. Via l’efficacité pollinisatrice d’une visite florale, D. staudingeri a augmenté le taux de fructification de 14,71%, le nombre moyen de graines par gousse de 35,29% et le pourcentage de graines normales de 17,31%. La conservation des colonies de D. staudingeri à proximité des exploitations de C. cajan est recommandée pour assurer la hausse des rendements de cette culture et favoriser une bonne pratique de la méliponiculture dans la région.Abstract Investigations were made on the flowers of Cajanus cajan in order to estimate the impact of the activity of Dactylurina staudingeri on pollination and yields at Dang, in 2016 and 2017. Among 33 insect species recorded, D. staudingeri was prominent with 12.19% of 6037 visits. This bee harvested intensely nectar and collected slightly pollen from C. cajan flowers. The mean foraging speed was 7.14 flowers/min. Through the pollinating efficiency of a single flower visit, D. staudingeri increased the fruiting rate by 14.71%, the mean number of seeds per pod by 35.29% and the percentage of normal seeds by 17.31%. The conservation of D. staudingeri colonies close to C. cajan farms is recommended to improve yields of the crop and to promote the good meliponiculture in the region.

Abstract:

The aim of this article is to evaluate the economic viability of soybean cultivation using BARI developed conservation agriculture (CA) based seed planter. This machine was tested and evaluated for planting of soybean in the farmers’ fields at Charwapda village of Subornachar Upazila of Noakhali district during Rabi (Dry winter) season of 2018 and 2019. This study was designed in randomized block design with three treatments and four replications i.e. planting by reduced tillage (RT), conventional tillage and broadcasting method (CT) and dibbling method (DB). Results revealed that the planter effective field capacity and conventional tillage with power tiller (PT) for dry land preparation was found to be 0.078, and 0.033 hah-1, respectively. Less time (43%) required for planting by planter than PT. Costs saved by RT were 27 and 57%, respectively over CT and DB methods. Saving of fuel consumption was 10.00 Lha-1 and reduced carbon (20%) emission to the atmosphere. Significantly the highest economic return (MBCR) was obtained from RT (1.63) planted soybean followed by DB (1.29) and CT (1.16) methods. Considering 10% interest rate, the NPV of the investment were found positive (BDT 97783) as well as estimated IRR was as 34% (>bank interest rate 10%) which reveals the machine investment is considered financially viable. The break-even use and payback period of machine was assessed as 9.65 ha of land per year and 2.71 years, respectively. Therefore, CA seed planter machine may be recommended as profitable for soybean planting in the south coastal region in Bangladesh.

Highlights Soil rutting commonly occurs during harvest and these ruts can adversely affect row crop planter performance. Four rut types were used, two formed by a tire and two formed by cutting the soil and removing soil from the ruts. Cotton seedling emergence at 15 days after planting typically was greater in unrutted soil than in rutted soil. Regression equations show a trend of decreased emergence as rut depth increased for both a sandy loam and a clay soil. Abstract. Soil rutting commonly occurs during harvest and ruts formed during harvesting can adversely affect row crop planter performance at the start of the subsequent cropping season. We conducted a three-year experiment on a sandy loam and a clay soil to investigate effects of soil ruts on the performance of a row crop planter while planting cotton into a rolled rye cover crop, and effects of planter depth setting on planter performance when planting through soil ruts. The four rut types used, prior to planting the rye cover crop in the fall, were a single tire rut, the rut from a dual pair of tires, and two rut types formed by cutting the soil 25 and 50 mm (1 and 2 in.) deep and removing soil from the ruts. The results show that although not all differences were statistically significant, for five of the six combinations of year and soil, cotton seedling emergence at 15 days after planting was greater when the soil had no rut, i.e., flat unrutted soil, than when the planter traveled across soil ruts while planting. In four of the six combinations of year and soil, emergence was significantly greater for the no rut soil condition than for a rut which was formed the previous fall by cutting 50 mm (2 in.) deep and removing soil from the rut. The three seeding depth settings used in the experiment positioned the bottom peripheries of the two disks of the double-disk opener 28, 35, and 40 mm (1.1, 1.4, and 1.6 in.) beneath the bottom peripheries of the depth-gauge wheels, providing those nominal seeding depths before the closing wheels firmed the soil. The planter depth setting did not significantly affect emergence at 15 days after planting for any of the six combinations of year and soil. Mean values of emergence at 15 days after planting in the sandy loam, averaged over the three years, were 13.9, 11.5, 12.2, 11.4, and 7.6 plants/m of row length (4.2, 3.5, 3.7, 3.5, and 2.3 plants/ft of row length) for the No rut, Single tire, Dual tire, Shallow cut, and Deep cut conditions, respectively. The means in the clay were 13.6, 5.7, 5.8, 12.6, and 7.4 plants/m of row length (4.2, 1.7, 1.8, 3.8, and 2.3 plants/ft of row length), respectively. Regression equations show a trend of decreased emergence as rut depth increased for both soils, with the clay regression line having a greater magnitude slope than the sandy loam line. L’Université Nangui Abrogoua située à Abidjan -Côte d’Ivoire abrite une relique forestière, dans laquelle vivent des Mones de Lowe Cercopithecus lowei Thomas, 1923. Cette espèce est décrite comme Vulnérable selon l’Union Internationale de la Conservation de la Nature. La survie de ces singes dépend de la disponibilité des ressources alimentaires. Dans un contexte de pressions de plus en plus grandissantes à cause de l’urbanisation, une étude a été entreprise pour évaluer la variabilité de la diversité et de la disponibilité des ressources alimentaires de ces singes. Des suivis continus journaliers des singes et phénologiques des arbres fruitiers menés dans les différents habitats de recherche de nourriture pendant 96 semaines ont permis de déterminer leur choix alimentaire. Il ressort que, sur les 426 espèces végétales identifiées sur le site de l’étude, 115 espèces appartenant à 46 familles et 79 genres sont consommées par cette population de Mone de lowe, avec une trentaine d’espèces majoritairement utilisées dans leur alimentation. Les fruits occupent 79,6% sur les sept différents organes de plantes qui sont apparus comme les items les plus consommés. Ces items consommés sont plus inféodés à la strate végétale moyenne et localisés principalement dans la jachère que dans la forêt secondaire et les espaces cultivés. La disponibilité alimentaire des items consommés montre que les fruits sont plus abondants pendant les saisons pluvieuses. De plus, durant le cycle saisonnier, ces groupes de Mones de Lowe ont consommé préférentiellement 30 espèces végétales. The University Nangui Abrogoua in Abidjan-Côte d’Ivoire homes a forest, in which live tree-tailed monkeys, Lowe's Monekey Cercopithecus lowei Thomas, 1923. This species is described as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The survival of these monkeys is linked on the diversity of local biological resources. In a context of increasing pressure from urbanization, this study was undertaken to assess the variability of diversity, availability, and palatability of food resources of these resilient monkeys. Continuous daily monitoring of monkeys and phenological monitoring of fruit trees in different foraging habitats over a 96-weeks period determined their food choice. Of the 426 plant species identified at the study site, 115 species belonging to 46 families and 79 genera were consumed by this population of Lowe's monkeys, with about 30 species being the most used in their diet. Fruits occupied 79,6% of the seven different plant organs that emerged as the most consumed items. These consumed items are more related to the middle plant stratum and located mainly in the fallow than in the secondary forest and cultivated areas. Food availability of consumed items shows that fruits are more abundant during rainy seasons. In addition, during the seasonal cycle, these groups of Lowe's Mones preferentially consumed 30 plant species.

Objetivos: En esta investigación se estudiaron las chinches harinosas (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae y Putoidae) presentes en las raíces de café (Coffea arabica L.) y de arvenses asociadas a este cultivo. Alcance: En los municipios de Sandoná, Consacá, La Unión, San Pablo y San José de Albán, departamento de Nariño, Colombia. Metodología: Se recogieron 114 muestras a partir de raíces de café y de 17 especies de plantas arvenses asociadas a este cultivo, pertenecientes a las familias botánicas Asclepidaceae, Asteraceae, Commelinaceae, Cyperaceae, Poaceae, Plantaginaceae, Polygonaceae, Solanaceae. Los insectos se colectaron de forma manual, en raíces de plantas que presentaran alguna sintomatología asociada al ataque de estos insectos tales como clorosis y debilitamiento. La identificación taxonómica se realizó a partir de ejemplares montados en lámina para microscopía después de diferentes procesos, con base en la comparación de la morfología externa de las hembras adultas con las claves establecidas para el grupo. Principales resultados: Se identificaron por primera vez en Nariño en el cultivo de café, dos especies pertenecientes a los géneros Puto Signoret ( Putoidae) y Dysmicoccus Ferris (Pseudococcidae). Conclusión: Esta información es importante para incorporarla dentro de planes de manejo integrado de plagas en zonas productoras de café en Nariño y en Colombia. Con este trabajo se aumenta el conocimiento en la distribución de las especies de insectos escama del café en el país.

While working in anti-extinction conservation requires paying careful attention to the realities of precarity and ambiguity, this is not necessarily reflected in our public narratives of such work. Instead, as is typified in Jean Giono’s 1953 short story ‘The man who planted trees’, many conservation narratives are pitched in heroic modes, framing conservation labour as working to secure an obvious ‘good’ in perpetuity. In this paper, I think with practicing Buddhist and volunteer tree planter, Errol Greaves, and his work organising and working with dedicated humans helping to regenerate native forest on Te Ahumairangi Hill at the edge of Wellington City. Aiming to create a flourishing native habitat to support the endangered kākā (Nestor meridionalis), Errol’s work is largely in line with mainstream anti-extinction conservation goals in Aoteaora/New Zealand. However, his labour is framed by distinctly non-heroic narratives emphasising cooperation, ambiguity and precarity—emphases more closely related to the comedic, a mode of narration which Joseph Meeker identifies as better allowing for both ecological accommodation and responsiveness. In this paper, I consider the resources offered by various relational ontologies and non-heroic narratives for both responding well to ecological realities and sustaining work for a flourishing world, particularly in our current times of radically apparent precarity.

Interplanetary interactions are the largest forces in our Solar System that disturb the planets from their elliptical orbits around the Sun, yet are weak (<10−3 Solar). Currently, these perturbations are computed in pairs using Hill’s model for steady-state, central forces between one circular and one elliptical ring of mass. However, forces between rings are not central. To represent interplanetary interactions, which are transient, time-dependent, and cyclical, we build upon Newton’s model of interacting point-mass pairs, focusing on circular orbits of the eight largest bodies. To probe general and evolutionary behavior, we present analytical and numerical models of the interplanetary forces and torques generated during the planetary interaction cycles. From symmetry, over a planetary interaction cycle, radial forces dominate while tangential forces average to zero. Our calculations show that orbital perturbations require millennia to quantify, but observations are only over ~165 years. Furthermore, these observations are compromised because they are predominantly made from Earth, whose geocenter occupies a complex, non-Keplerian orbit. Eccentricity and inclination data are reliable and suggest that interplanetary interactions have drawn orbital planes together while elongating the orbits of the two smallest planets. This finding is consistent with conservation principles governing the eight planets, which formed as a system and evolve as a system.

In May 2014, the first planting of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) conservation hedge took place, when the Reverend Anne Brennan planted a tree which had originated as a cutting from the ancient and historic European yew, Taxus baccata, in the churchyard of her church at Fortingall, Perthshire. This is one of almost 2,000 plants that will eventually form a conservation hedge of significant scientific and conservation value. The International Conifer Conservation Programme (ICCP), based at RBGE, has actively sought other opportunities to establish conservation hedges via its network of ‘safe sites’, using a range of different conifer species. This initiative is being driven by the potential for relatively large numbers of genotypes from a single threatened species to be stored in a linear space. It is well established that seed banks have a great capacity to store large amounts of genetic diversity, so we should simply consider conservation hedges in a similar manner. These super-hedges cram relatively large amounts of genetic material into a small space, capturing a great range of wild traits and potentially contributing to the restoration of wild populations. To date, conservation hedges have been planted at five separate locations at RBGE’s Edinburgh Garden as well as at four ICCP external ‘safe sites’. Although this article focuses on the establishment of conservation hedges using conifers, we have also highlighted some conservation hedges that comprise non-coniferous species.
