Full textThis doctoral thesis examines the strikes and the violence between the rural workers and the coffee plantation owners in São Paulo, Brazil, during the post-slavery period (1888-1930). Based on the social history and a wide range of historical sources, the aim being to demonstrate that these rural workers were not in fact passive and submissive historical subjects. On the contrary, although the creation of trade unions was forbidden by the plantation owners, the workers managed to create tactics of resistance as well as individual, familial and collective kinds of struggles. Women played a major role as workers and active participants, fighting against many kinds of exploitations to which they were submitted to in the plantations. It was a way for the workers to contest the strategies of exploitation and domination implemented by the plantation owners, through rigid and coercive control mechanisms and excessive disciplinary measures, in order to confine them into an idealised worker model. The violent repression of the strikes by both the plantation owners and the policy along with physical aggressions between workers and plantation owners, reveal that violence in rural labour relations in Brazil was quite common, demystifying the myth about the pacifism and submission of Brazilian rural workers

Full textThis thesis, initially, goes into the course taken by the cultivation of coffee in Brazil, since it started at Rio de Janeiro until it reached the western plains of the State of São Paulo. The aim is to understand the origins of the know-how that governed the transformations and adaptations of coffee plantations. Once settled in São Paulo land, the aim is to rekindle the invaluable contribution rendered by Eduardo da Silva Prates, Conde de Prates, towards a greater rationalization of coffee processing and production through the analysis of preserved documentation held in public archives. Hypothesis concerning possible contributors to the development of his property, The Santa Gertrudes Farm, were examined and other names were revealed by the research which is supplemented with the iconography of the property.

Abstract: Economic analyzes result in important tools in the definition of policies and structural measures for any production sector, particularly in the agricultural products sector. The objective of this study was to evaluate factors affecting coffee supply in the Northeast region of the state of São Paulo, using econometric modeling based on a log-log multiple regression. The variables used were production (the dependent variable), productivity (sacks 60 kg per hectare), planted area (hectares), prices of coffee (sack 60 kg), sugar (kg) and orange (dozen) . The data cover the period from 1995 to 2015 and were withdrawn from the Institute of Agricultural Economics (IEA) at the Center for Applied Economics Studies. Multiple log-log linear regression models were developed using the software GRETL (Gnu, Regression, Econometrics and Time-Series Library), and the methodology proposed by Gujarati and Porter (2011). The results showed that the planted area, the productivity and the price of coffee were the determinants of supply, with a positive impact, from 1995 to 2015. The prices of competing products, sugar and orange, did not have a significant impact on supply in the region surveyed, from 1995 to 2015.

Full textThe architecture of country scenes of the nineteenth century is treated from ten copies of head houses and buildings related to the processing of coffee farms located in the City of Casa Branca, in the northeast of São Paulo, a region known as the Hinterland of Rio Pardo. The study presents reflections on the cultural influences of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, mainly, and aesthetic considerations in relation to neo-classicism and eclecticism. The methodology is based on fieldwork, the literature review and research of primary documents and oral sources. It discusses the architecture of nineteenth-century Sao Paulo and local peculiarities revealed in the farms considered as a corpus of research, founded between 1830 and 1900, which had its history linked to the coffee culture at some point in their conformation. Each of the ten farms is presented separately, with description of the architectural and materials and construction techniques employed, with emphasis on examining the characteristics of the architectural layout of the houses headquarters. Since the farms founded by migrant miners, ranchers and farms, till those founded as coffee plantations by rich families from São Paulo, all have very interesting architectural features and show together, the type diversity of the rural architecture of São Paulo.

Full textThis study it approached cases of conflicts characterized for physical, moral, economic and racial the violence, for work questions, that involve deriving Italian immigrants of diverse regions of Italy and other ethnic groups on coffee plantations of the judicial district of Araraquara in the period of 1890-1914, using as source criminal records. The present work searched to understand the values that guided a violent behavior in the daily conflicts, investigating the solidarity possibilities between the ethnic groups in the individual actions, mainly between the Italians. In this perspective, the work evidenced that the regional differences between the Italians limited the solidarity of the group, over all of the northern ones and of central Italy in relation to the meridionals. The analysis of the criminal records also evidenced that the main values that guided a violent behavior in the daily conflicts were to receive a wage just and to have movement freedom. These values had been verified for all the ethnic groups in question.
