Abstract:
This thesis evaluates the product to product changeover process of the line S10 at the Coca-Cola European Partners manufacturing plant in Jordbro, Sweden. The target has been to propose improvements to reduce the total planned downtime by 10%. The total planned downtime in March of 2019 was 4449 minutes. Secondary data has been used to identify the current situation. A study visit took place at the Coca-Cola European partners manufacturing facility in Dongen, the Netherlands, to serveas inspiration. Single Minute Exchange of Dye (SMED) methodology was applied to improve the most frequent planned downtime event (PDT event), which was performed 22 times during March of 2019 at an average of 72,8 minutes. The theoretical improvement for PDT event CIP programme 1, by applying SMED methodology, is estimated to roughly 16 minutes. This theoretically saves 8% of the total planned downtime for March of 2019. The same solutions from the SMED methodology could be applied to other PDT events, which would increase the number of events from 22 to 27. This would theoretical save 9,6 % of planned downtime for March of 2019.

Hobbs, Megan Elizabeth. "University Fundraising Through Special Events: An Application of the Theory of Planned Behavior." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2016. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/1666.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to apply the Revised Theory of Planned Behavior and EVENTQUAL models to explore (1) event qualities that significantly impact guests’ satisfaction with a university event that they attend, (2) significant factors influencing university loyalty as a result of an event, and (3) willingness to make a charitable donation to a university as a result of attending an event. An online survey was sent to attendees of an annual Cal Poly auction event between 2002 and 2016 that directly benefits Cal Poly students. The data were used to test a series of hypotheses to determine the fit of a proposed theoretical model. Although the study was limited by a small sample size of 74 subjects, it resulted in the creation of a revised event fundraising model. Student involvement proved to be the only quality significantly predicting a guest’s overall satisfaction with the event, explaining 12% of the variance. The combination of overall event satisfaction with a subset of the revised theory of planned behavior variables (attitude, descriptive norm, and moral norm) explained 51% of the variance in predicting university loyalty. Finally, intention to donate was best predicted as a combination of prescriptive norm, attitude, and university loyalty, accounting for 57% of the variance. Overall, the revised model is applicable in aspects of university event planning including event branding, marketing, and the involvement of students at the event. Of serious note is the statistically significant attitude variable. If an event planner can utilize a university event to shift the guests’ attitudes towards the event and university, this can greatly enhance not only intention to donate at one particular event, but the loyalty these people feel to the university or program.

Davids, Fawwaaz. "The Theory of Planned Behaviour and the Entrepreneurial Event Model as predictive models of entrepreneurial intention." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/27299.

Full text
Abstract:
The Theory of Planned Behaviour and The Entrepreneurial Event Model were used as models to predict entrepreneurial intention amongst final year students. The sufficiency of this paradigm was compared with the aim of determining which model predicts entrepreneurial intention the most within a South African context. A sample of 186 students was used to determine the sufficiency of the Theory of Planned Behaviour. As part of our methodology, a sub-set (n = 123) of the sample was used to determine the sufficiency of the Entrepreneurial Event Model. The sample consisted of final year commerce and engineering students. The results of the regression analysis indicated that the Theory of Planned Behaviour explained 58% of the variance in entrepreneurial intention. The Entrepreneurial Event Model was found to be less sufficient than the Theory of Planned Behaviour and only explained 38% of the variance in entrepreneurial intention. Therefore, when predicting entrepreneurial intention in a South African context, the Theory of Planned Behaviour can be considered the more sufficient model of prediction. Future research should consider using the Theory of Planned Behaviour, rather than Entrepreneurial Event Model, for entrepreneurial intention prediction among students in South Africa.

Little is known about time to return to work (TRTW) following planned medical events. This study was a secondary analysis (n=94) to determine predictors of time to return to work following a total knee replacement for osteoarthritis. Significant predictors of delayed TRTW following a knee replacement: 1) use of workplace modifications (in 6wks vs 5 wks) and 2) poor physical function (in 7wks vs 6 wks). These findings have large implications for workers undergoing knee replacement, orthopedic clinicians, and occupational health nurses.

Godlewska, Marta. "EVENT PLANNERS' RATINGS OF DESTINATION SELECTION VARIABLES: A COMPARISON BETWEEN MEMBERS OF THREE PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION G." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2006. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/3093.

Full text
Abstract:
Several researchers have attempted to understand the destination selection criteria that are important to event planners (Crouch & Ritchie, 1998; Getz, 2003; Oppermann, 1996). However, an examination of the previous studies indicated that only limited understanding of the destination selection criteria has been provided. There is little research that compares event planners belonging to different professional associations and their rating of destination selection criteria. This study examined the differences that exist between three groups of event planners in rating thirteen destination selection variables. The study provides more understanding in the search of an optimal combination of destination selection mix based on multiple dependent variables. This study found significant differences in ratings of five out of thirteen destination selection variables by event planners who were the members of three different associations. Therefore it is providing a valuable contribution to the existing body of literature. From a practical standpoint, this study can help by providing information about how planners of different events feel about certain destination criteria at the time a destination selection is made. All parties with a vested interest in the event industry may use this information to appropriately position their services in the market and tailor their products to better compete for the limited number of events in an environment where the space to host such events continues to grow.

Mohd, Khir Masrur. "Developing an event safety risk typology : a qualitative study of risk perception amongst event planners and venue managers in Malaysia." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2014. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/4441/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explored the significance of risk and safety and the need for proper operating procedures in identifying the link between the types and categories of event safety related risks from the perception of event planners and venue managers within the event management industry in Malaysia. Event management is an emerging profession in need of methodical tools to ensure the success and safety of all stakeholders within this field. Despite a plethora of literature confirming that risk and safety is fundamental in event planning and management, a thorough literature review has exposed the insuffiency of research within general risk and safety management areas and, more specifically, the lack of research relating to event risk management and safety. This empirical investigation started by exploring the concept of risk and risk perception and adapts this approach in the field of event management. This has been taken in order to investigate the perceptions of event/venue managers in Malaysia towards risks and safety issues in planning and managing events. Due to the lack of empirical studies in this area, a qualitative exploratory case study approach using semi-structured interviews has been conducted aiming at exploring the importance of this topic, and identifying (and justifying) several important themes within the research context. The sample participants were recruited based on purposive and snowballing sampling technique comprising 33 event/venue managers from various event related organisations in Malaysia. The data were analysed using both inductive and deductive approaches by adopting a typology outlined in the literature. A pragmatic approach of thematic analysis focusing on identifiable themes and patterns of living and/or behaviour has been adopted. A post positivist paradigm with the use of a reflexive approach in analysing data in that the researcher became an important instrument of analysis for the research. The findings identify seven major themes focusing on important types of risks associated with the safety of event employees and event attendees from a Malaysian perspective. These safety risk categories known as: crowd safety and crowd control; technical and logistics hazards; alcohol-related risks; security risks and issues; environmental health and safety; financial risks and insurances and; emergency services. Thus, this research attempts to enhance the current understanding of Malaysian event risk management practice by proposing a generic typology focusing on important risk factors based on a Malaysian perspective. The empirical outcome in the form of an event safety risk typology answered the need for an analytical tool in order to improve the management of risk and safety within the event management domain, and also provided an avenue for further research within this emerging field.

Abstract:
How a shape arises from the coordinated behavior of cells is one of the most fascinating questions in developmental biology. Here we used the early stages of development of serrated leaves in Arabidopsis thaliana as a model to study the tight relation between cellular behaviour and morphogenesis. During Arabidopsis thaliana leaf development the fine control of cell proliferation and cell expansion sustains differential growth at the margin required for the formation of leaf outgrowth named teeth. In this model, differential growth is the result of interplay between auxin signaling and CUC transcription factors that are involved in the maintenance of boundary domain identity. To clarify the interconnected relations between patterns of CUC TFs and auxin responses as well as the cellular events behind serrations we used time-lapse experiments on vegetative primordia of lines expressing developmental and/or auxin response reporters. Our results revealed a tight and dynamic control of differential growth at the leaf margin and the critical involvement of CUC3 in the local repression of cell growth in combination with low auxin responses

Ochieng, Judith Auma. "The role of disturbances in mangrove wood formation and forest structure: Effect of large sedimentation events." Doctoral thesis, Universite Libre de Bruxelles, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2013/ULB-DIPOT:oai:dipot.ulb.ac.be:2013/232475.

Abstract:
Disturbance can take various forms and are characteristic of any ecosystem including mangroves. When maintained within certain allowable limits, disturbances permits maintenance of a given stable state which is equivalent to resilience hence the ecological status is not compromised. Disturbances may disrupt the natural balance of processes within such ecosystems including changes in sediment budgets and salinity and tidal regimes. As such, it may trigger a series of responses in tree establishment and development. While such responses may be displayed in loss of stability of a forest and may culminate in irreversible degradation of the system, disturbances could also result in improved performance of physiological processes and consequently tree growth. It may equally lead to the development of adaptive mechanisms to counteract the resultant otherwise stressful effects. Sediment accretion is one of the important natural processes within the mangrove environment particularly in the face of relative sea level rise. In each case, sediment fluxes are gradual and while the trees thrive from the benefits of terrestrial sediment, the system ensures balance in elevation for possible sea level rise scenario. However, abrupt and/or rapid sediment input leading to partial burial of the trees may be detrimental to the trees development in the short term and the entire ecosystem in the long run. But how are ecophysiological processes affected before the mangroves trees die from partial sediment burial? What is the threshold below which normal tree functioning is ensured. The main objective of this study was to understand the impacts of disturbance on mangrove trees, as individuals and as an assemblage. Specifically the study targeted large sedimentation on selected ecophysiological processes (phenology, water transport), root development and general physiognomy and hence its impact on wood formation in mangroves. A survey was also done on the extent of wood exploitation and other human activities, in order to obtain background information on the environmental management in the area and hence to help create an integrated picture of the evolving mangrove ecosystem in the human-nature context.Main question: What is the significance of sedimentation in shaping the ecological status of mangrove forests?

During the northern hemisphere winter the stratospheric polar temperature increases abruptly. On some occasions, the stratospheric polar region experience more intense heating, which are accompanied by a reversal in the zonal mean circulation. These events are classified as sudden stratospheric warming. Some studies showed intense connection between the events of abrupt warming of the Northern Hemisphere polar stratosphere and mesospheric cooling of the region, as well as between these events and disturbances in the mesosphere and the ionosphere at middle and low latitudes, including the equatorial region. The objective of this study was to investigate possible effects of sudden warming event in stratospheric polar temperature behavior of the equatorial region near the menopause. In this sense, temperature data estimated from meteor radar measurements obtained at São João do Cariri-PB (7.4°S, 36.5°W) were analyzed together with data from the polar stratosphere, provided by National Centre for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). Analyzing the results it was found that during the sudden stratospheric warming major the mesopause temperatures on the São João do Cariri are lower than during the stratospheric warming events considered minor. Also was verified an anti-correlation between the equatorial mean mesopause temperature and the temperature in the polar cap (poleward of 60 N) at 10 hPa, during Sudden Stratospheric Warming Major events.

Slawinski, Lucie. "La famille de transporteurs de monosaccharides ERD6-like (Early Response to Dehydration six-like) : émergence, évolution chez les plantes terrestres et réponses au déficit hydrique dans les feuilles d'Arabidopsis thaliana." Thesis, Poitiers, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017POIT2310.

Full text
Abstract:
Nowadays, characterizing plants responses to drought is a major goal for plant scientists. The carbon management in response to environmental cues involves the activity of ERD6-like (Early Response to Dehydration six-like) monosaccharides transporters, playing roles in sugar subcellular partitioning and re-allocation at the scale of the whole organism. The first purpose of this PhD thesis focused on the analysis of the ERD6-like evolution into the plant Kingdom, using a phylogeny approach. Identification of 519 ERD6-like in the proteome of 47 plants species lead to rebuild the evolutionary story of this gene family, and to provide evidence for the major duplication events. The second purpose was the mapping of ERD6-like expression levels in different organs of Arabidopsis thaliana and lead to the identification of almost constitutively expressed copies and others displaying organ-preferential expression patterns. The third purpose was to study the responses of ERD6-like genes to water starvation in A. thaliana leaves. This highlighted the expression induction of 4 AtERD6-like during water deficit. Finally, the characterization of erd6-like insertional mutants initiated the study of the functional diversity of this large family of monosaccharide transporters in Arabidopsis thaliana

Pradel, Benjamin. "Rendez-vous en ville ! Urbanisme temporaire et urbanité évènementielle : les nouveaux rythmes collectifs." Phd thesis, Université Paris-Est, 2010. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00546513.

Abstract:
Abstract:
This master work analyzes relationship between philosophy and creation developed in the works of Gilles Deleuze. This French philosopher thinks in postnietzschean paradigm. He develops philosophy of becoming, taken from Nietzsche. Deleuze rejects thinking of identity, saying that creation is the first princip, whereas identity is the second. He uses the idea of overturned Platon, so his main purpose is to open new perspectives of thinking. Another aspect of difference is considered with Felix Guattari by model of rhizome, what pressupose an open system in mind and in philosophy, too. Creation in philosophy involves three great aspects: creation of concepts, setting up the plane of immanence, inventing conceptual personae. As Deleuze and Guattari insists, philosophy is not contemplation, reflection or communication, but creation of concepts, that are always new. Concepts a not given; it must be created. Concepts opens and acts onto the plane of immanence, what means that philosophy must act only immanently, without any trancendent pressupposition. The conceptual personae produces the plane of immanence and gives to the concepts their specific force. Otherwise, inventing of conceptual personae shows the relationship between philosophy and experience of philosopher or what mode of existence every thinker invents. Creation in philosophy requires experimentation and good taste. There is no abstract thruth: every thruth is created and acts only immanently. Deleuze and Guattari... [to full text]

Abstract:
Ultra-Relativistic heavy-ion physics is a promising field of high energy physics connecting two fields: nuclear physics and elementary particle physics. Experimental achievements of the last years have provided an opportunity to study the properties of a new state of matter created in heavy-ion collisions called quark-gluon plasma. The initial state of two colliding nuclei is affected by fluctuations coming from wave- functions of nucleons. These fluctuations lead to the momentum anisotropy of the hadronic matter which is observed by the detectors. The system created in the collision behaves like a fluid, so the initial state is connected to the final state via hydrodynamic evolution. In this thesis we model the evolution with relativistic viscous hydrodynamics. Our results, combined with experimental data, give non trivial constraints on the initial state, thus achieving "reverse engineering" of the heavy-ion collisions. The observable which characterizes the momentum anisotropy is the anisotropic flow vn. We present the first measurements of the first harmonic of the anisotropic flow called directed flow v1 in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. We then perform the first viscous hydrodynamic modeling of directed flow and show that it is less sensitive to viscosity than higher harmonics. Comparison of these experimental data with the modeling allows to extract the values of the dipole asymmetry of the initial state, which provides constraints on the models of initial states. A prediction for directed flow v1 in Au-Au collisions is also made for RHIC. We then perform a similar modeling of the second and third harmonics of the anisotropic flow, called respectively elliptic v2 and triangular v3 flow. A combined analysis of the elliptic and triangular flow data compared with viscous hydrodynamic calculations allows us to put constraints on initial ellipticity and triangularity of the system. These constraints are then used as a filter for different models of initial state. At the end of this thesis, we show perspectives in the studies of the initial state which are opened by recent measurements of event-plane correlations which could shed light on the initial state fluctuations.

Abstract:
Classically, wide-area synchronized power system monitoring has been an expensive task requiring significant investment in utility communications infrastructures for the service of relatively few costly sensors. The purpose of this research is to demonstrate the viability of power system monitoring from very low voltage levels (120 V). Challenging the accepted norms in power system monitoring, the document will present the use of inexpensive GPS time synchronized sensors in mass numbers at the distribution level. In the past, such low level monitoring has been overlooked due to a perceived imbalance between the required investment and the usefulness of the resulting deluge of information. However, distribution level monitoring offers several advantages over bulk transmission system monitoring. First, practically everyone with access to electricity also has a measurement port into the electric power system. Second, internet access and GPS availability have become pedestrian commodities providing a communications and synchronization infrastructure for the transmission of low-voltage measurements. Third, these ubiquitous measurement points exist in an interconnected fashion irrespective of utility boundaries. This work offers insight into which parameters are meaningful to monitor at the distribution level and provides applications that add unprecedented value to the data extracted from this level. System models comprising the entire Eastern Interconnection are exploited in conjunction with a bounty of distribution level measurement data for the development of wide-area disturbance detection, classification, analysis, and location routines. The main contributions of this work are fivefold: the introduction of a novel power system disturbance detection algorithm; the development of a power system oscillation damping analysis methodology; the development of several parametric and non-parametric power system disturbance location methods, new methods of power system phenomena visualization, and the proposal and mapping of an online power system event reporting scheme.

"Congestion Mitigation for Planned Special Events: Parking, Ridesharing and Network Configuration." Doctoral diss., 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.55534.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: This dissertation investigates congestion mitigation during the ingress of a planned special event (PSE). PSEs would impact the regular operation of the transportation system within certain time periods due to increased travel demand or reduced capacities on certain road segments. For individual attendees, cruising for parking during a PSE could be a struggle given the severe congestion and scarcity of parking spaces in the network. With the development of smartphones-based ridesharing services such as Uber/Lyft, more and more attendees are turning to ridesharing rather than driving by themselves. This study explores congestion mitigation during a planned special event considering parking, ridesharing and network configuration from both attendees and planner’s perspectives. Parking availability (occupancy of parking facility) information is the fundamental building block for both travelers and planners to make parking-related decisions. It is highly valued by travelers and is one of the most important inputs to many parking models. This dissertation proposes a model-based practical framework to predict future occupancy from historical occupancy data alone. The framework consists of two modules: estimation of model parameters, and occupancy prediction. At the core of the predictive framework, a queuing model is employed to describe the stochastic occupancy change of a parking facility. From an attendee’s perspective, the probability of finding parking at a particular parking facility is more treasured than occupancy information for parking search. However, it is hard to estimate parking probabilities even with accurate occupancy data in a dynamic environment. In the second part of this dissertation, taking one step further, the idea of introducing learning algorithms into parking guidance and information systems that employ a central server is investigated, in order to provide estimated optimal parking searching strategies to travelers. With the help of the Markov Decision Process (MDP), the parking searching process on a network with uncertain parking availabilities can be modeled and analyzed. Finally, from a planner’s perspective, a bi-level model is proposed to generate a comprehensive PSE traffic management plan considering parking, ridesharing and route recommendations at the same time. The upper level is an optimization model aiming to minimize total travel time experienced by travelers. In the lower level, a link transmission model incorporating parking and ridesharing is used to evaluate decisions from and provide feedback to the upper level. A congestion relief algorithm is proposed and tested on a real-world network.

Gavaza, Paul 1972. "Using the theory of planned behavior to predict Texas pharmacists' intention to report serious adverse drug events." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2010-05-747.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation was to use the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to predict Texas pharmacists’ intention to report serious adverse drug effects (ADEs) to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The study explored the utility of the TPB model constructs (attitude [A], subjective norm [SN], perceived behavioral control [PBC]), as well as past reporting behavior (PRB), and perceived moral obligation (PMO) to predict pharmacists’ intention to report serious ADEs to the FDA. The study also determined if the pharmacists’ A, SN and PBC were related to practice characteristics and demographic factors. A survey was developed based on two focus group interviews, pretested and mailed to 1,500 Texas practicing pharmacists. An overall response rate of 26.4 percent was obtained (n = 377 pharmacists). Overall, pharmacists intended to report serious ADEs, had a favorable attitude towards reporting, were somewhat influenced by social norms regarding reporting and perceived themselves to have some control over reporting serious ADEs to the FDA. For direct measures, A and SN were significant predictors of intention to report serious ADEs, but PBC was not. The TPB constructs together accounted for 34.0 percent of the variance in intention to report serious ADEs to the FDA. Using indirect measures, A, SN and PBC were significant predictors of intention and together accounted for 28.8 percent of the variance in intention to report serious ADEs. PRB and PMO improved the explanatory power of the regression models (direct and indirect measures) over and above the TPB constructs. Unlike most other practice characteristics and demographic factors examined, knowledge was significantly related with the TPB constructs. In summary, A, SN, PBC (indirect measures), PRB, and PMO influence the formation of pharmacists’ intention to report serious ADEs. The TPB has utility in predicting ADE reporting behavior. Pharmacy educators should explore pharmacists’ attitudes, beliefs, and expectations of important others in designing educational programs. Strategies to help pharmacists report more serious ADEs should focus on altering their perception of social pressure towards reporting and addressing the barriers towards ADE reporting (e.g., lack of knowledge).

Abstract Professional sport events have become a part of the repertoire of public entertainment, which can be accessed through mass media such as television or internet. Relying on broadcasting and visibility, the rapid developing e-sport events greatly depends on the number of viewers. To further investigate the factors affecting the public's interest in such events, the theory of planned behavior is applied to explore the intention of viewers in watching such events. Online investigative questionnaires were provided and 297 valid samples were collected. Structured equation modeling is used to analyze the relationship between the behavioral intention of e-sport event viewers and preexisting factors including attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control. It was found that the attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control of the viewers have significant impacts on behavioral intention, where the perceived behavioral control plays a decisive role. Viewers agree with the belief that watching e-sport events is a non-faulty and meaningful activity has a positive effect on public impression because the willingness of watching these events may depend on whether the people around them share the same or similar values. Also, better accessibility can facilitate utilization.

In order to evaluate the effects of parking management strategies a planned special event, this study presents a multiclass, multimodal dynamic traffic simulation model with departure time and parking location for planned special events. By adopting a hierarchy decision structure, the influence of in-vehicle travel time, walking time, time spent looking for parking, parking fee, bus fare, and schedule delay costs toward the travel choice behaviours of participators of planned special events are considered simultaneously. In the first stage, participators make mode and departure time choices. Then, they make parking location choices if they choose to use private mode. Finally, they make route choices. They wish to spend minimal travel costs to arrive at a venue on their schedules. By adopting a mesoscopic transportation planning software, Cube, this simulation model is constructed to predict the traffic flow patterns in space and time. Time-dependent daily trips and extra trips generated by the planned special event are assigned into the road network together. Referencing the field investigation of New Year’s Eve in Taoyuan City, a numerical example is used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed simulation model.

In this study, we focus on cyclic planned special events (PSE) which are held at a fixed place. A major of participants will attend the PSE by private vehicles. First, we collect relevant information of travel behaviors of event participants by means of interview survey. Second, we present a travel behavior model of event participants, including departure time choice, mode choice, and route choice. Third, we use mesoscopic transportation planning software, Cube, to simulate these travel choice behaviors of event participants. Finally, we evaluate the impact of traffic mitigation plans by using this Cube model from the perspectives of event participants and non-participants. New Year’s Eve in Taoyuan County was used as a case study. The results show that if event participants pay much attention to the schedule delay, they will carefully choose their departure times. In addition, we found that reducing the public transit cost and increasing the parking cost of private vehicles can help increase the proportion of public transit of event participants, improve the overall network performance, and decrease the impact of non-participants.

We focus on the travel choice behaviours of participants who attend planned special events (PSE) by private vehicles mainly. PSEs are periodically held at a fixed place. New Year’s Eve in Taoyuan County was used as a case study. We collect relevant information of travel behaviors of event participants by means of interview survey. Using Cube Voyager, a mesoscopic and systematic assessment tool is developed to explore participant behaviours of planned special event for mode and departure time window choices, evaluate event scenarios, and duplicate what happened during previous planned special events for a better understanding of the related issues. The simulation-based, multi-class, multi-modal traffic assignment model with departure time windows can be used to forecast the occurrence time and the level of traffic congestion produced by a planned special event. In this study, the 2015 New Year’s Eve celebration in Taoyuan City was used as a case study. Different types of traffic control plans were proposed to reduce the traffic impact of the planned special event. The impacts of a planned special event towards event participants and commuters and the mitigation measures for various traffic control plans are also established successfully in this study.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to study the outcome of Single Event Multilevel Surgery (SEMLS) on the gait pattern known as crouch gait in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy. The term “crouch gait” in the literature has been defined by many authors to mean a flexed knee coupled with many different combinations of posture at the ankle. Consequently it was necessary to provide a robust definition of crouch gait before the outcome study could proceed. Crouch gait was defined in the context of a classification of sagittal gait patterns in spastic diplegia. In the cross-sectional study on the classification of sagittal gait patterns, 187 children with spastic diplegia were categorised according to visual recognition of their gait pattern and sagittal plane kinematic data. Six gait patterns in spastic diplegia were identified, one of which was crouch gait. A pattern of increasing age, severity and biomechanical incompetency in maintaining an extended posture was seen across the gait patterns and crouch gait appeared to be the “end” gait pattern. A longitudinal study documented how the identified gait patterns evolved over time. Thirty-four children were followed for more than one year and the results indicated that the stability of the gait pattern was variable. The reliability of the classification was found to be acceptable. (For complete abstract open document)

Abstract:

Video games are increasingly recognized as powerful tools for learning in classrooms. However, they are widely neglected in the field of English, particularly as objects worthy of literary study. This project argues the place of video games as objects of literary study and criticism, combining the theories of Espen Aarseth, Ian Bogost, Henry Jenkins, and James Paul Gee. The author of this study presents an approach to literary criticism of video games that he names “player-generated narratives.” Through player-generated narratives, players as readers of video games create loci for interpretative strategies that lead to both decoding and critical inspection of game narratives. This project includes a case-study of the video game Undertale taught in multiple college literature classrooms over the course of a year. Results of the study show that a video game introduced as a work of literature to a classroom increases participation, actives disengaged students, and connects literary concepts across media through multimodal learning. The project concludes with a chapter discussing applications of video games as texts in literature classrooms, including addressing the practical concerns of migrating video games into an educational setting.
