Abstract:
This jubilee publication provides a representative overview of twenty years of the world-renowned lecture series and introduces all the speakers – more than 130 scientists, including 15 Nobel Prize laureates. The book details the history of the Mendel Lectures and the significant activity of scientists associated with the so-called “Brno Initiative”: Kim A. Nasmyth, Anna Nasmyth, Max Perutz, Paul Nurse, Tim Hunt, James Watson, Eric Wieschaus, Peter Swetly, Jiřina Relichová, Jan Motlík, Emil Paleček, Eva Jiřičná, and Gustav Ammerer – the founders of the series, thanks to whom the lectures regularly take place, moreover, on the premises where the founder of genetics worked 200 years ago.

Abstract:
Ruskin’s work is strongly inscribed in the great European context, marking an important moment in the movement for the establishment of a community culture and spirit. The essays collected here intend to place the theme of Ruskin’s fruitful and essential relationship with Europe at the centre of a critical reflection, presenting themselves as opportunities for an in-depth study and a discussion on issues related to aesthetics, the protection of material and immaterial heritage, cultural and literary memory. By bringing to the attention of the scientific community the multiple aspects – geographic, historical-artistic, critical-aesthetic, literary, socio-political – of Ruskin’s work from inter- and transcultural perspectives, the volume aims to (re)discover a deliberately European Ruskin and to stimulate new research routes.

Abstract:
Few topics animate, even polarize, philosophers, more than Naturalism, a doctrine which states that philosophy is continuous with, and perhaps even replaceable by, sciences worthy of the name. On one side, fans of technical progress believe that the sciences can indeed replace philosophy with something that allows us to reason and explain better. On the other, advocates of the humanities herald the insights and methods of disciplines seemingly beyond the reach of science. But these disputes are often more about turf than truth. All Talked Out exemplifies the power of science in a philosopher’s hands and takes a welcome look at the resulting fate of philosophy. Based on Trout’s Phi Beta Kappa Romanell Lectures, each chapter presents a novel and positive view of intellectual advances while addressing traditional topics in philosophy, and each chapter explains why these achievements occurred despite the archaic and often retrograde influence of philosophical doctrine and method. While foundational reflection remains as necessary as ever, philosophy, as it is conceived of in the halls of academia, no longer adds anything distinctively useful. At its best, philosophy is a place to grow new ideas. But many other disciplines can and do provide that incubation. In the end, we don’t have to kill philosophy; but we do have to figure out what it’s good for. Following a spirited Introduction, the first lecture takes stock of the growing field of evidence-based approaches to reasoning and, in light of these scientific developments, criticizes important failures in epistemology as it is currently practiced in the English-speaking world. The second lecture examines the psychological impulse to explain, the resulting sense of understanding, and the natural limits on cognitively appreciating the subject we have explained. The final lecture, on social policy, presents the proper reaction to the idea that scientific evidence matters to responsible governance.

Abstract:
This book introduces the theory of complex surfaces through a comprehensive look at finite covers of the projective plane branched along line arrangements. It emphasizes those finite coverings that are free quotients of the complex 2-ball. The book also includes a background on the classical Gauss hypergeometric function of one variable, and a chapter on the Appell two-variable F1 hypergeometric function. The book began as a set of lecture notes, taken by the author, of a course given by Friedrich Hirzebruch at ETH Zürich in 1996. The lecture notes were then considerably expanded over a number of years. In this book, the author has expanded those notes even further, still stressing examples offered by finite covers of line arrangements. The book is largely self-contained and foundational material is introduced and explained as needed, but not treated in full detail. References to omitted material are provided for interested readers. Aimed at graduate students and researchers, this is an accessible account of a highly informative area of complex geometry.

Tham, Joo-cheong. How Might Digital Campaigning Affect the Problems of Political Finance? International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.31752/idea.2021.57.

Abstract:
This lecture deals with the intersection between three sets of challenges, each of which constitutes an existential threat to democracies across the world. The first is linked to money in politics, which poses the danger not only of ‘policy capture’ but also, in worse-case scenarios, of state capture by monied interests. The principal question addressed by this lecture is poised at the meeting place between these sets of challenges: How might digital campaigning affect the problems of political finance? Also integrated into the analysis is a third set of challenges: those which arise from the Covid-19 pandemic. This lecture reflects on how the pandemic might shape the impact of digital campaigning on the problems of political finance. Follow the lecture for the conclusion and read also the paper for more details.

Abstract:
Supplemental Instruction is a program designed to support students in their learning process. The program consists of advanced students supervising new students, where the purpose is to improve students' performance and reduce the risk of interruption of studies. Supplemental Instruction was established almost 50 years ago and is used today in universities around the world. This book is about the role, use and place of digital technologies in supplemental Instruction, which includes why we need Supplemental Instruction, teacher’s integration of technology experience with lecture capture and more. The book is aimed at anyone who is concerned about study quality in higher education. The contributors are researchers and lecturers at various universities from several countries. This book is the first of a trilogy on Supplemental Instruction, where the themes for the other books are " Student Learning Processes" and “Organization and Leadership”. The editors of the trilogy are Abbas Strømmen-Bakhtiar, Roger Helde and Elisabeth Suzen, all three Associate Professors at Nord University, Norway.
