Abstract:
In this thesis, we present an autonomous placement protocol for services in smart spaces. Proposed design is a combination of computing Grids and Intelligent Agent Systems which is able to adapt to environmental changes. These changes are failing/joining/leaving nodes, changing node usage, failing/joining/leaving services, and changing service demands. Smart spaces are heterogeneous in terms of available resources for consumption and they are dynamic where available resources and services change over time. The system adapts to environmental changes by live service migration and load balancing, and provides high availability by maintaining backup replicas of services. Load in the system is balanced among available resources by taking into account heterogeneity of the environment. Complex nature of the problem space makes it difficult to manage the services and resources manually. Thus, all functionality provided by the system is fully autonomous. A novel approach is presented for migration decisions based on utility functions that represent characteristics of nodes. Fitness of the designed protocol is tested with simulations under different circumstances. Obtained test results show that it provides high degree of availability to services and adapts to environmental changes.

Abstract:
Cloud computing offers pay-per-use on-demand access to computer resources for hosting program execution environments for software service deployment. Management of cloud resources includes determining, based on current monitored resource availability, which part(s) of a computational infrastructure should host such program execution environments in a process called placement. Our work defines directives that lets consumers of cloud resources influence placement to express relationships between cloud services (orchestration) and deployment constraints to uphold for related service components, without surrendering the ultimate control over placement from the infrastructure owner. The infrastructure owner remains free to define their policies and placement optimization criteria, e.g., to consolidate work that needs to be done to as few physical host machines as possible for power savings reasons. We show how the placement process can be adjusted to take such influence into account and validate through simulations that the adjustments produce the correct result without too large computational impact on the placement process itself. Further, we present a technique for transferring large data files between cloud data centers that operate in (separate) cloud federations that avoids repeated transfers in a delegation chain between members of (different) cloud federations. Finally, we present a non-invasive method of extracting monitoring data from a service deployed in a cloud federation, and a framework for making monitoring information available and understandable in spite of technical differences between monitoring systems used in cloud federations.

Abstract:
The evolution of telecommunications operators’ infrastructures towards the SDN and NFV paradigms requires to surmount various technical barriers. On one hand, it is necessary to deal with the centralization of control functions, and on the other hand with the constraints of approaches coming directly from Cloud Computing. In this thesis, we addressed two issues. Firstly, we tried to define a SDN architecture more suited to the requirement of operators. For this purpose, we proposed a distributed and flexible SDN control plane to overcome the limitations of the centralized OpenFlow protocol, as well as the constraints of network function virtualization. The proposed architecture allows for the differentiated composition, validation and deployment of dynamically reconfigurable network services, taking into account the SLAs associated with the services. We have illustrated some of its characteristics, namely, distribution, composition, dynamicity in a proof of concept. Secondly, to achieve the expected SLAs, we try to optimize the placement of network services in this infrastructure. We first dealt with the issue of SDN controllers placement seeking for the optimization of latency, load and reliability metrics. Then, we considered the placement of virtualized network functions chains. We have therefore demonstrated the potentialities and performances of evolutionary algorithms with the perspective to propose a generic resolution tool for placement of network functions

Many high performance applications require lots of resources. Environment like clusters or grid is interesting for their execution. This thesis studies parallel or sequential applications on clusters with precise management of resources in order to define a level of quality of service. It deals with execution support model, applications needs expression and scheduling. Two approachs are proposed : one in a deterministic mode where every application running on a host is known and controled and the other one in a stochastic mode where some part of the load of the host is unknown. Every application belongs to one of the four classes of quality of service defined which determines the level of quality of service requested. Scheduling algorithms are proposed on clusters which guarantee quality of service. They are based on events simulation and differential equations deducted from markovian models. An extension of the algorithm on the grid level is presented. Applications are represented by a graph of communicating tasks. Algorithms are validated by simulation and are integrated in a resources manager (AROMA : scAlable Resources Manager and wAtcher). A model to invoice a client for the used resources is proposed

Abstract:
The thesis deals with analysis of legal aspects of product placement. First, it looks at product placement from a general point of view. The work explains past legal framework where product placement was a part of "unfair competition" both in EU and Czech Republic. Then, it analyzes particular articles of directive 2007/65/EC which regulates the term product placement as the first in the history. The analyses showed that there are a lot of vague and disputable terms, e. g. "significant value", provision "free of charge", or ensuring that viewers are "clearly informed" about existence of product placement. Further, the work analyzes an implementation of the directive to the czech law and its comparison with Slovakia. Product placement was translated into czech law as "umístění produktu". The implementation is reflected in the "on-demand audiovisual media services Act" but also in the amendment of Act Nr. 231/2001 Sb. By contrast, Slovakia did not create a new special Act for non-linear audiovisual media services, just amended Act Nr. 308/2000 Z.z. and some other affecting laws. Finally, the work confronts the legal theory with praxis. This is done by a survey. The most important result of the survey showed that almost a half of the respondents think that product placement is not a commercial practice. This fact highlights the importance of ensuring that viewers are "clearly informed" about the existence of product placement and also the provision of consumer protection.

Abstract:
The inevitable transition from physical hardware devices towards lightweight reusable software modules in Network Function Virtualization (NFV) introduces countless opportunities while presenting several unprecedented challenges. Satisfying NFV expectations in post-5G networks heavily depends on the efficient placement of network services. Dynamic allocation of physical resources for online service requests demanding heterogeneous resources under specific QoS requirements represents one of the most important steps in NFV design, and a NP-Hard problem to solve. This complexity is encountered in various 5G NFV use-cases, which are related to the placement, from VNF Forwarding-Graphs and Network Slicing, to the virtualization of the Core Network, CDN, IoT, etc., investigating numerous objectives in the literature, ranging from resources-based multi-objective optimizations to the energy consumption, cost of revenue, service acceptance, resiliency, availability, security, etc. In this thesis, we are interested in placing the virtual network services over the network by trying to maximize the number of accepted services considering their QoS requirements. Although the VNF placement problem has been studied for many years, the need for an approach that could find a fair compromise between optimality and scalability still exists. In this thesis, we study several problems and challenges in network service placement and propose AL/ML solutions accordingly

Abstract:
Efforts to keep children in their own homes when they are found to be at risk within the meaning of child protection legislation have resulted in the creation of family preservation programs. Typically, these services are crisis-oriented. Short-term, intensive work with families is offered with a goal of maintaining the child in his or her own home. A family support program which provides these services in the anglophone community of Montreal was examined.
The data for this qualitative study were obtained through indepth interviews with the program staff and through an examination of agency files. The findings suggest that service is limited to those families who are assessed to be motivated--that is compliant with the objectives of the program and accepting of the intensive nature of the service. The interventions focus on individual parenting, most often the mother's parenting. For the workers, the dual role of support and scrutiny is managed within a relationship of trust.
The findings further indicate that families who are experiencing severe problems, often related to alcoholism, family violence and extreme poverty are not served by this program.

Abstract:
While the health sector has attracted significant foreign aid, evidence on the effectiveness of this support is mixed. This dissertation examines the allocation of health aid within the context of placement, service utilization, and benefit. The first paper examined the sub-national allocation of Chinese development aid projects across Africa. I determined how political preferencing of Chinese aid specifically, allocating aid to the birth region of the current political leader differs across sectors such as health, education, and transportation. I find some evidence that aid, more broadly defined, is subject to political preferencing in recipient countries, which could potentially limit its intended effects. The second paper examines the influence of health aid on malaria service utilization in Malawi. It tests the hypothesis that health aid boosts a facility’s readiness to provide malaria services, thereby increasing the utilization of malaria services in a facility’s service area. Findings indicate that while increased health aid is associated with increased health facility readiness to diagnose malaria, these improvements are not generally related to increased health care utilization. The final project focuses on population level health effects of health aid placement in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, specifically whether all‐cause child mortality is lower in regions receiving malarial aid interventions. Among the most promising evidence xi found on the potential benefit of health aid is that investments, such as malaria bed nets, are associated with reductions in child mortality, particularly in rural settings and among those with low malaria burden. These latter findings suggest health aid should be carefully targeted and should consider local disease risks to fully realize the benefits of population‐level improvements in child health. When taken together, my findings indicate that health aid is positively associated with limited improvements in health outcomes. Overall, these results support a need for researchers to avoid the temptation to aggregate aid flows and health outcomes at the country level, and instead examine sector‐specific aid flows at the lowest sub-national geographic unit possible in order to inform policies designed to allocate health aid.

Harrison, Antonia C. "Personality disorder : complex cases or difficult cases? : a question of placement in forensic services." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2015. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/29079/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explored whether patients in high security hospitals are more ‘Complex Cases’ or more ‘Difficult Cases’ than their counterparts in lower security settings. Herein, case complexity is associated with co-morbid diagnoses or clinical needs, whilst case difficulty refers to challenging, violent and aggressive behaviour. A systematic literature review examined institutional violence and aggression in different security settings within healthcare and prison environments. No clear differences were found in frequency of incidents between the security levels, and a suggestion that the severity of incidents were greatest in lower security had limited generalisability. The results were confounded by data incompatibility, meaning that it could not be concluded that higher security sites house the more ‘Difficult Cases’. An empirical research study examined differences in clinical complexity between personality disordered (PD) patients living in high and medium security units (MSUs). Statistical differences were found on several clinical and forensic variables between settings, including age at first conviction, and difficulties with affective instability, paranoia and depression (assessed with the Personality Assessment Inventory; PAI). This led to the development of a Model of a Complex Case of PD. The results suggested that higher security sites do treat a greater number of ‘Complex Cases’ of PD. Interestingly, they were also found to house a greater number of physically violent patients than the MSUs, ie. more ‘Difficult Cases’. A case study examined a high security PD patient, ‘Andrew’. His assessment, formulation and violence relapse prevention treatment were presented and discussed. It was identified that on admission Andrew was a match to the Model of a Complex Case of PD, and that a lowering of his PAI score profile over time reflected his treatment gains and lessening of his clinical difficulties. When preparing to transition to an MSU, Andrew could no longer be classified as complex, according to the Model. Finally a critique of the PAI psychometric was presented. The tool was assessed for reliability and validity as a measure of clinical psychopathologies, interaction styles and treatment needs, and was praised for its utility with PD patients. The findings from the thesis chapters were reviewed, and the application of the Model of a Complex Case of PD was also discussed. It was concluded that the high security hospital currently provides treatment services to more ‘Complex Cases’ of PD and more ‘Difficult Cases’ than the investigated medium security counterparts. Please note that Chapter 3, which details a confidential patient case study, has been redacted.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine tourism students’ perceptions of their Experiential Learning (EL) experiences based on the Predicting Learner Advancement through Cooperative Education (PLACE) four-component model. The research objectives were to ascertain Experiential Learning’s impact on the four components namely Personal Development, Career Development, Work-skills Development and Academic Development. This study fits within the pragmatic paradigm and utilised an explanatory mixed methods research design which requires quantitative data to be collected first with follow-up qualitative data. The data collection instrument for the quantitative data was the PLACE model, which was in the form of a survey questionnaire and the data generating strategy for the qualitative data was individual interviews. The findings of the data were heavily skewed toward the positive end of the spectrum with students viewing the impact of EL on the four components as favourable. Interviews were conducted with participants whose results showed deviations from the norm and had particularly negative experiences. Academic Development had extremely low Cronbach Alphas, which points to poor reliability. This phenomenon was also further explored during the interviews with participants making suggestions for factors to be considered. Recommendations were made to the three stakeholders of EL namely students, employers and academic coordinators in order to ensure improved Experiential Learning programmes and maximised student benefit.

This study was designed to present descriptive data from a survey of 201 school psychologists. Psychologists completed a survey addressing current practices for determining placement for students with ADHD including the role of school psychologists in determining placement, how often and who monitors services, where students are served, and what services are provided in each setting. Findings indicated that psychologists were involved less frequently in placement decisions and evaluation for Section 504 than in Special Education. Students with 504 plans received less frequent follow-up than students in Special Education. Results indicated that schools were generally following federal guidelines and recommendations from researchers for placement decisions, at least when the school psychologist was involved. Overall, service patterns for Section 504 and Special Education were similar; however, all interventions were reported more frequently in Special Education. Data indicated that empirically supported interventions may be underutilized in both settings for students with ADHD.

Abstract:
The convergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Cloud Computing technologies is a promising approach. On the one hand, Cloud Computing provides virtually unlimited computing, networking, and storage resources for constrained IoT devices. On the other hand, the IoT enables the interaction of cloud services with real world things. Such integration stimulates innovation in both areas and provides novel service delivery models such as the Sensingas a Service in different application domains (i.e. healthcare, transportation, smart-city, smartbuilding). In such convergence, things are abstracted and offered as cloud services accessible over the Internet from any place and at any time. Such abstractions are known as Virtual Objects (VOs) and connect things to traditional cloud services (e.g. data analytics, storageservices) to deliver IoT applications. In this thesis, we consider first a partial integration of the IoT and Cloud Computing. Such integration focuses on delivering the IoT within a single service level of Cloud Computing, namely: the application, the platform, or the infrastructure level. In this context, IoT and CloudComputing resources are provisioned separately. We focus in this work on the orchestration of VOs in a cloud infrastructure. For this purpose, we define a provisioning algorithm based on a sharing strategy where each connected object is associated with a single VO and can be consumed by multiple applications. We propose two linear programs to perform the provisioning of VOs. The first considers no previously deployed VOs in the infrastructure, while the other takes into consideration pre-deployed VOs. Our approach minimizes VOs operational cost and communication latency in both cases compared to those with a non-sharing strategy. The second part of this thesis considers a full integration of the IoT and Cloud Computing. We refer to such integration as the Cloud of Things (CoT). In this context, a customer should be able to request end-to-end IoT application provisioning, deployment, auto-scaling, and release on the fly with minimal management efforts. In this thesis, we address the provisioning aspect. We define a resource-oriented model able to describe an IoT application request and a CoT infrastructure on different service levels. We base our model on the OCCI specifications defined by the OGF. Furthermore, we define a single stage provisioning algorithm to orchestrate a described IoT application into a CoT infrastructure. The algorithm considers cloud and IoT resources simultaneously. Simulations show that a one-stage provisioning process is 10%−20%more efficient than two separate orchestration processes for cloud and IoT resources

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the use of computer and communications technologies at four-year public/private college and university career centers that are members of the Southwest Association of Colleges and Employers (SWACE). The findings of this study reveal that (a) all career centers are now using computer and telecommunications technologies for at least one office function; (b) small institutions do not use technologies as much as large institutions because they have fewer financial resources, less technical support from institutions, fewer personnel, and they also need time to learn to use technologies effectively; (c) public career centers are more willing to explore new technologies but private career centers mostly adopt and implement proven technologies; (d) career education does not utilize technologies as much as career counseling or job placement functions; (e) lack of financial resources and lack of technical support are major barriers to a technological infusion; and (f) technologies, including electronic student databases, computerized presentations with the network connection, and OCR scanners, will be needed in the near future.

Applied Behavioral Analysis
M.S.Ed.
Staff members supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities often provide the primary supervision and direct instruction to those served. These services are often provided in locations with limited resources and funding, especially within adult services. Supervisors in these settings must ensure necessary documentation and job responsibilities are completed in order to meet regulatory requirements and ensure appropriate care and treatment for individuals’ served. By providing simple and cost effective feedback, supervisors can ensure the staff members are meeting job expectations while ensuring the individuals’ served are having their needs met. This study implemented a reversal design in two separate program rooms within an adult day program to examine the effects of posted group feedback, posted group feedback paired with goal setting, as well as the effect of the placement of the postings in a conspicuous versus non conspicuous location with staff completion of required daily documentation. Results in both rooms indicated that posting group feedback alone did not have as much effect on staff performance unless paired with goal setting. The posting locations in each room also did not seem to have an effect on staff performance.

Brown, Catherine. "Enhancing the learning of student nurses in a community "sign off" placement : implications for students, health services and higher education." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2014. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/13793/.

Full text
Abstract:
This action research project explored the implications for student nurses, health services and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) of placing students for their final “sign off” placement prior to registration with district nursing teams who nurse patients at home. The placing of students with District Nursing teams for the “sign off” period is unusual in the London area. The stated aim of the Department of Health is that students should have more experience outside of the hospital setting (DH 2006) and the Nursing and Midwifery Council has a specific standard that students acquire practice experience in the home setting (NMC 2010). The literature review highlighted a tension between those aims and a national trend of reduced district nursing numbers and fragility in the student nurse mentorship preparation system in the London area. Data was obtained over a two year period from interviews with ten students, their mentors in practice, NHS managers and educationalists and the researcher’s own learning log. Key findings from the data were that despite the initial concerns expressed in the HEI that students could be disadvantaged compared to their hospital based peers, the students placed with District Nursing teams successfully completed the placement gaining the requisite skills and management experience. The objective of designing a sustainable process at the author’s institution to support these placements was achieved and the resource implications explored. Although not explicitly stated as an objective of the research intervention, the students felt competent and confident to apply for staff nurse posts in District Nursing teams and most were successfully appointed. Arising from the reflexive analysis of action research, a recommendation is made that the NMC should reconsider a standard that all students should gain experience in the home setting (NMC 2010) and consider developing a more realistic standard which would allow some students to focus on the home setting and others to explore other settings outside of hospital. Recommendations for the local context are made to maintain and develop the processes which were put in place as a result of this action research intervention to support students and practitioners during the sign off period of the pre-registration nursing programme.

Abstract:
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1 in 6 children are diagnosed with a developmental disability or with developmental delays, which are associated with impairments in physical, language, cognitive, and/or adaptive behaviors. To fill a gap in the literature, the adaptive profile of young children initially served as developmentally delayed (DD) were analyzed to explore adaptive differences between different ethnicities and placement settings of children at the time of the initial referral prior to DD assessment. Archival data included 333 preschool aged children. The independent variables of eligibility status (DD or not DD eligible), ethnicity (White, Black, or Hispanic), and placement setting prior to testing (home, daycare, or school) and the dependent variable of Adaptive Behavior Assessment Scale-II Parent/Primary Caregiver Form General Adaptive Composite (GAC) standard scores were used. Three 1-way ANOVAs indicated a significant difference between the 2 levels of eligibility status. There was no difference for the 3 levels of ethnicity. There was a significant difference in GAC scores between public school setting versus home setting but not between daycare setting versus public school and home settings. To effect positive social change, knowledge from this study highlights the need to increase professional and public awareness of early identification of DD children; the importance in mandating competent care by highly trained individuals; and the impact of educating parents, daycare professionals, educators, and other providers about the role of social learning on development and mastery of functional life skills for all young children.

Schmidt, Jessica Danielle. "Assessing the Impact of Restrictiveness and Placement Type on Transition-Related Outcomes for Youth With and Without Disabilities Aging Out of Foster Care." PDXScholar, 2015. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/2481.

Full text
Abstract:
Nearly 23,000 youth age out of the foster care system between the ages of 18 and 21 each year in a transition fraught with challenges and barriers. These young people often lack developmentally appropriate experiences and exposure to necessary knowledge, role modeling, skill building, and long-term social support to promote positive transitions to adulthood while in foster care. As a result, young people who exit care face an array of poor adult outcomes. Nearly 60% of transition-aged foster youth experience a disability, and as such, face compounded challenges exiting foster care. While the examination of young adult outcomes for youth with disabilities has been largely missing from the literature, available research documents that young adults with disabilities who had exited foster care were significantly behind their peers without disabilities in several key areas. Literature examining the experiences of transition-aged youth with disabilities in the general population also highlights gaps in young adult outcomes for young people with disabilities compared to their peers. Compounding the issue for youth in foster care, those who experience disabilities often reside in restrictive placement settings such as developmental disability (DD) certified homes, group homes, or residential treatment centers. Though limited, there is some evidence to suggest that these types of placements negatively impact young adult outcomes for those aging out of foster care. The rules and regulations in place to promote safety in these types of placements could further restrict youth from engaging in meaningful transition preparation engagement while in foster care. Therefore, youth with disabilities, whose needs necessitate a higher level of support towards transition preparation engagement, may actually receive fewer opportunities than their peers in non-relative foster care and kinship care as they prepare to exit care into adulthood. The work in this dissertation provides knowledge to address gaps in the literature around transition preparation engagement during foster care for youth with disabilities, youth residing in restrictive foster care placements, and youth who report high levels of perceived restrictiveness as they prepare to enter into adulthood. This dissertation is a secondary analysis of transition preparation engagement data collected at baseline for 294 transition-aged youth in foster care who participated in an evaluation of an intervention to promote self-determination and enhance young adult outcomes, called My Life. Transition preparation engagement in this study was represented by eight domains: youth perceptions of preparedness for adult life, post-secondary education preparation engagement, career preparation engagement, employment, daily life preparation engagement, Independent Living Program (ILP) participation, transition planning engagement, and self-determination. Transition preparation engagement domains were examined using hierarchical multiple regression analysis to explore differences by disability status, placement setting, and youth self-report of perceptions of restrictiveness. In alignment with the literature, 58.8% of youth in this sample experienced a disability. Additional key demographics, including age, gender, and race, and foster care experiences, including length of time in care and placement instability, were entered into the regression models as covariates. Results indicated significantly less transition preparation engagement for 1) youth with disabilities compared to youth without disabilities, 2) youth residing in restrictive placements compared to youth in non-relative foster care and kinship care, and 3) youth who reported higher levels of perceived restrictiveness compared to youth who reported lower levels of perceived restrictiveness. Program, policy, and research recommendations are discussed that highlight the need to promote transition preparation engagement for this particularly vulnerable group of young people in foster care who experience disabilities, are residing in restrictive placement settings and who report high levels of perceived restrictiveness.

Abstract:
The advent of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) marks a paradigm shift in the approach to managing and optimizing transportation infrastructures. Rooted in the integration of state-of-the-art communication technologies, ITS encompass a variety of applications aimed at enhancing road safety, traffic efficiency, and driving comfort. However, the execution of these increasingly computation-intensive applications raises inherent challenges related to latency, data processing, and service continuity. The emergence of Edge Computing stands as a transformative advancement poised to redefine the efficacy of vehicular applications in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Contrasting with conventional cloud computing paradigms, which frequently encounter latency issues attributable to the remote nature of data processing, Edge Computing decentralizes computational tasks to be nearer to the point of data generation. This proximity drastically diminishes latency, optimizes data aggregation, and enhances overall resource utilization. Consequently, Edge Computing is uniquely positioned to address and potentially mitigate the limitations that have previously impeded the optimization of ITS functionalities. Nevertheless, the incorporation of Edge Computing into vehicular networks unveils a unique array of complexities, ranging from the strategic placement of edge servers and efficient data offloading techniques to the implementation of robust service migration protocols and safeguarding privacy and security measures. This thesis investigates the problems of edge server placement and service migration in vehicular networks. Our contributions in this thesis are threefold. First, we introduce "ESIAS," an Edge-based Safety Intersection Assistance System, specifically designed to improve safety intersections. The system aims to proactively distribute precise warning messages to drivers, mitigating the risk of common intersection-related accidents. Second, we tackle the challenge of optimal Edge server placement in vehicular networks, employing integer linear programming to find the most effective solutions. The methodology considers latency, cost, and server capacity in real-world traffic conditions. The proposed framework aims not only to minimize the overall deployment cost but also to balance the computational workloads among Edge servers, all while maintaining latency within acceptable thresholds. Finally, we delve into the complex issue of service migration in MEC-enabled vehicular networks, addressing the quandary of maintaining quality of service (QoS) while minimizing migration costs. As vehicles move through different regions, maintaining service quality requires strategic service migration, which poses challenges in terms of timing and location. To resolve this problem, we formulate it as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) and apply deep reinforcement learning techniques, specifically Deep Q-Networks (DQN), to discover optimal migration strategies tailored to each service's requirements. The resulting framework ensures seamless service continuity even within high-mobility constraints, achieving an optimal balance between latency and migration costs

Abstract:
The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) raises various issues, both in terms of the development and deployment of IoT applications in computing infrastructures. Cloud Computing is the most widespread computing infrastructure today. It is based on data centers that communicate with each other and with users via monolithic, inflexible network equipments. The importance of revising this schema has been highlighted in order to meet the challenges of an IoT environment that is heterogeneous, mobile and generates a large amount of data that requires rapid processing. The classic IoT model, in which IoT objects send information via their gateways to the Cloud, which then provides services to the applications, finds extensions in the Fog or Edge approach, which enables services to be brought closer to users by relying on intermediate computing and communication equipments between users and data centers. The Fog Computing architecture allows exploiting the computing and storage! capacities of the network infrastructure, in addition to that of the Cloud, for the deployment of IoT services and thus extending and bringing services closer to IoT objects. However, network equipments are heterogeneous and with low computing capacity, they cover a large geographical area and must cope with the mobility of IoT users. All this adds complexity to the problem of service placement and scheduling in order to optimize various parameters such as energy consumption, different costs related to placement and improving the applications quality of service requirements. The objective of our thesis is to propose IoT service placement strategies in a Fog infrastructure while taking into account the dynamic nature of the environment brought by user mobility, the energy cost of computing infrastructures and the QoS requirements of deployed applications

Abstract:
The nursing student who has undergone the four year diploma or degree training as a nurse also has to undergo compulsory community service as a requirement before she/he can be registered as a qualified professional nurse. While it has been compulsory for other health professionals such as doctors, dieticians or dentists to place students in compulsory community service, it has only been compulsory for nursing students since 2008. This means that the practice is relatively new in nursing and it is not clear how the newly qualified professional nurse experiences compulsory community service (CCS). The overall goal of this study is to determine the experiences of professional nurses placed at the state hospitals in Nelson Mandela Bay regarding compulsory community service clinical placement exposure and to use these descriptions to develop guidelines. The study followed a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, contextual design. Literature was reviewed in order to identify research that was done previously regarding compulsory community service amongst health care professionals. The research population included professional nurses who underwent compulsory community service in the three state hospitals in the Nelson Mandela Bay. Purposive sampling was utilised to identify the participants. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect information and field notes were kept. The interviews were transcribed and Tech’s (1990) in Creswell, 2009:186) eight steps of data analysis were followed to create meaning from the data collected. An independent coder assisted with the coding process to ensure the trustworthiness of the findings. The researcher ensured the validity of the study by conforming to Lincoln and Guba’s model of trustworthiness which consists of the following four constructs, namely credibility, transferability, dependability and conformability (Lincoln & Guba, 1999, as cited in Schurink, Fouche & de Vos, 2011:419- 421). Three themes and sub themes were identified. Literature control was done to compare the findings with existing research results. The researcher ensured that the study was conducted in an ethical manner by adhering to ethical principles such as beneficence, justice and fidelity. All the participants in the study felt that the clinical placement exposure was a worthwhile experience. The participants expressed a feeling of gratitude that they were afforded this opportunity of practicing under the guidance of experienced professional nurses. To them it was an opportunity to master whatever they were taught as student nurses so that by the time they practice as independent practitioners they would be confident and knowledgeable. The CCS nurses indicated that orientation and mentorship were not always of good quality and professional nurses were not always available as in some units professional nurses were not readily accessible. The CCS nurses were left alone and isolated with no one to consult. If proper orientation and mentorship had been in place the CCS nurses would have enjoyed the community service year more and they felt that they would have benefited more. Had there been a mentoring system in place it could have gone a long way to ascertain that the participants gained confidence and were able to perform tasks independently and confidently. The participants overwhelmingly indicated that unit management should have been included in their CCS year placement. During the CCS year the CCS nurses were not exposed to unit management. This was seen by CCS nurses as a missed opportunity. Had they been afforded the opportunity to practice unit management under the supervision of unit nursing managers, professional growth and development in unit management could have been facilitated. That they were not afforded that opportunity deprived them of a valuable skill as well as personal and professional growth. In conclusion guidelines for placement of CCS nurses in the Nelson Mandela State hospitals have been formulated for implementation. Recommendations were made to enhance nursing practice, nursing education and nursing research.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Internet of Things (IoT) has been on the rise for several years now. Following recent attacks on these systems, studies have shown that most of these devices were not sufficiently secured. The ideal solution to this problem would be to provide security mechanisms on all IoT devices however, this solution is not always achievable. An alternative strategy to secure these systems would be to deploy security services at the edge of the network to bring the security mechanisms as close as possible to unsecured devices. The purpose of this thesis is to design an adaptive security framework for IoT devices relying on security services positioning. This work is divided into three contributions, each of which affects different aspects of our approach. The first contribution provides a strategy for deploying security services that minimizes the cost of deployment. This method expresses our positioning constraints into a graph problem which we suggest solving using graph theory. The second contribution formalizes the service placement problems and models them into an ontology. The latter is then used to solve those problems and to compare their different solutions. The third contribution focuses on security services that implement \textit{whitebox} cryptography. In this contribution, we present a mechanism for anchoring these implementations on an IoT network to prevent code lifting attacks and device theft. Finally, we present an adaptive security framework for IoT objects in which we position all the contributions made during this thesis

Brady, Anne. "From no work to work? : the role of job placement and skills training services in assisting unemployment Benefit II recipients find work under Germany's Hartz IV welfare reforms." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2014. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/3077/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents the results of a qualitative investigation of Unemployment Benefit II (UBII) recipients' experiences of skill training and job placement services under Germany's Hartz IV welfare reforms—arguably a (neo-) liberal intervention in the context of what has traditionally been described as a conservative-corporatist welfare regime. This thesis explores the experience of skills training and job placement services in terms of the degree to which these support mechanisms engage with UBII recipients’ needs and perceptions and how these necessarily reflect the purposes of the support and activation mechanisms (to provide support to and assist the long-term unemployed find work) and the underlying policy assumptions (that the long-term unemployed need to be made to demonstrate responsibility in finding work). The evidence presented suggests such services have not necessarily provided a route into regular employment. Instead the ‘support’ mechanisms tend to ‘busy’ the recipients; to be irrelevant to the recipients’ employment history and/or future interests; and not to match what recipients wish to, or are interested in, doing. Secondly, the policy rhetoric and design of the Hartz IV reforms implied, ostensibly, a shift with some cultural significance—from social solidarity to individual responsibility; from old (conservative) to new (neo-liberal) paternalism. The thesis examines UBII recipients’ perception of their ‘right’ to and ‘responsibility’ in finding work. The evidence suggests that popular discourse and understandings of the right to and responsibility in finding work in Germany are not so distinct or dissimilar from the Anglophone world. Finally, this thesis identifies a potential contradiction within the German government’s political objective of providing support (Fördern) to recipients in return for UBII recipients demonstrating responsibility (Fordern) in finding work. The findings suggest there is little need to make unemployed Germans feel ‘responsible’ for finding work. The demands placed on recipients to demonstrate to case managers that they are taking responsibility for finding work may undermine the recipient’s ability responsibly to look for work. And UBII recipients may ‘trick’ the system to meet these demands, ostensibly wasting the time and resources of Jobcenter staff and UBII recipients. This thesis concludes by arguing that Fördern and Fordern are ultimately not compatible within a policy framework. Where Fordern (demand/require) exists in conjunction with the threat of sanctions for non-compliance, there is too much of a chance that Fördern (support), in the form of job placement and skill training services, will be used to regulate the conduct of and discipline UBII recipients rather than provide legitimate support. Thus, any support provided starts to break down as soon as Fordern is inserted into the policy framework.

Abstract:
This dissertation examined whether there had been any changes in local practices and policies with respect to the identification and placement of English language learners in special education programs and services since the enactment of Proposition 227, and if so, what they were. This study was comprised of an examination of statewide general and special education aggregated student enrollment data, school years 1996-1997 through 1999- 2000, at state and local education agency (LEA) levels and interviews with selected LEA special education administrators. The findings revealed that (1) the proportion of English language learners who were identified and placed in special education programs and services changed since Proposition 227 passed; however, there were no specific changes identified in local practices and policies, (2) district special education administrators believed that this law had no affect on the identification or assessment processes of special education programs, (3), they also believed that proposition 227 had no effect on identification and placement of English language learners in general education or special education programs, and (4) lack of qualified staff, inadequacy of instructional materials, staff training and misconception of the law in general were identified as LEAs primary challenges post- Proposition 227.

Abstract:

Perez, Alfredo Jose. "An Architecture for Global Ubiquitous Sensing." Scholar Commons, 2011. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3276.

Full text
Abstract:
A new class of wireless sensor networks has recently appeared due to the pervasiness of cellular phones with embedded sensors, mobile Internet connectivity, and location technologies. This mobile wireless sensor network has the potential to address large-scale societal problems and improve the people's quality of life in a better, faster and less expensive fashion than current solutions based on static wireless sensor networks. Ubiquitous Sensing is the umbrella term used in this dissertation that encompasses location-based services, human-centric, and participatory sensing applications. At the same time, ubiquitous sensing applications are bringing a new series of challenging problems. This dissertation proposes and evaluates G-Sense, for Global-Sense, an architecture that integrates mobile and static wireless sensor networks, and addresses several new problems related to location-based services, participatory sensing, and human-centric sensing applications. G-Sense features the critical point algorithms, which are specific mechanisms to reduce the power consumption by continous sensing applications in cellular phones, and reduce the amount of data generated by these applications. As ubiquitous sensing applications have the potential to gather data from many users around the globe, G-Sense introduces a peer-to-peer system to interconnect sensing servers based on the locality of the data. Finally, this dissertation proposes and evaluates a multiobjective model and a hybrid evolutionary algorithm to address the efficient deployment of static wireless sensor nodes when monitoring critical areas of interest.
