Full textThe term pivoting is widely used on the internet, in the educational community, by start-up accelerators and engineering researchers. However, pivoting is still little explored in the scientific field, particularly in management sciences. Moreover, the literature on the subject does not explicitly address the process of pivoting by considering the entrepreneur, his artifacts, and the actors of his ecosystem as an inseparable whole. Therefore, this thesis aims to understand the process of pivoting by considering this triad as the smallest element of study. This thesis, based on a constructivist epistemological paradigm, considers the company as a complex system whose intelligibility must be found not only in the system itself but also in the relations that the system has with its environment. The resolution of this research problem was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, based on the literature on pivoting, three research propositions and a systemic model of the process of pivoting are developed. In the second stage, these research propositions and this model are tested empirically utilizing a case study. Following this, the systemic model of the process of pivoting developed from the literature is adjusted accordingly. The originality of this thesis lies in the systemic reading grid used to address the complexity of the pivot process. This reading grid is the triad of entrepreneurs, artifacts, and ecosystem actors, as well as the interactions between the elements of this triad. This thesis makes four contributions. First, it puts forward a holistic view of the process of pivoting based on system theory. Secondly, it provides a starting point for future research on pivoting. This starting point is based on systemic modeling of the process of pivoting validated by a case study. Thirdly, it suggests that entrepreneurs should maintain variety in their organization to better adapt to environmental changes. This variety refers not only to the number of elements present in the organization but also to the number of interactions these elements have. Fourthly, it offers a new definition of pivoting based on system theory

Full textThis thesis focuses on the mathematical modeling of fibrous structures having somepeculiar properties (high strength-to-weight ratio and very good toughness infracture), whose mechanical behavior escapes from standard Cauchy elasticity. Inparticular, it addresses cases in which the presence of a microstructure, consisting ofregularly spaced pivoted beams, entails effects that are well described by generalizedcontinuum models, i.e. models in which the deformation energy density depends notonly on the gradient of the placement but also on the second (and possibly higher)gradients of it. In the Introduction, the state of the art concerning generalizedcontinua and their applications for the description of fibrous structures is describedand some relevant open problems are highlighted. In Chapter 1 and 2 a rigoroushomogenization procedure based on Gamma-convergence arguments is performedfor a lattice (truss-like) structure and for a discrete 1D system (Hencky-type beammodel). In Chapter 3, a variational treatment is employed to formulate acomputationally convenient approach. In Chapter 4 some experimental resultsconcerning the behavior of the structure in various kinds of deformation arediscussed. This motivated the investigation performed in Chapter 5, in which DirectMethods of Calculus of Variations are applied to Euler beams in large deformationsunder distributed load

Full textThe skills of the well-known competent pivots are identified within the present survey on the ASOBAL league during the 2006-07 seasons. A pivot is defined as the player whose skills are developed in the phase of attack, therefore, due to his position; he is decisive for the intervention and conditioning of his partners' actions (Román, 993). The research analyzes the figure of the pivot from the perspective of a competent sportsperson, gathering the characteristic abilities and the analysis of the playing actions in the high competition. The pivot’s skills are presented from the developmental functional structure of the game. From this approach, they are classified and the dimensions are defined for the observation of the player’s activity. In the handball competition, situations in the match are not identical to the ones in training and therefore, the sportsperson has to select the closest alternative among all those they know. Just a few times, they carry out real new skills they do not support, at least partially, from previous learning (Riera, 1997). To get to know these abilities, two data collection techniques are used: the interview to current skilled coaches and the observation of the pivots' competition. From the matches' analysis, it is emphasized that the pivots solve playing situations through a reduced number of concatenation of skills. The activity of the pivot is constituted from the combination of seven basic skills: earning the position, blocking, feinting, launching, disassociating, holding the odd in number opponent back and keeping up in distance from the action taking place. Among those mentioned before, skills which use the body and involve taking some advantage on the adversary stand out. Furthermore, skills of the pivot are articulated through four basic intentions: controlling the game, demanding the ball, finishing and to help.

Full textToday the different generations in Sweden live their lives very much apart. Places where children, grown-ups and elderly get to know each other are few. The children’s’ role models and kin are restricted by that of their parents pursue of career and their aim to live their lives as a nuclear family. The young ones are left to depriving environments constituted of makeshift preschools. Often built out of building barracks, enclosed by fences or in other cases crammed in to the dark of the ground floor of the more congested parts of Stockholm. Not somewhere you choose to spend your time in. If you get to choose. This project combines the programme of a preschool with that of dance studios, a restaurant and a public square. The focus is on how to achieve an environment where the generations can meet, without risking the children’s security. On how to create spaces that subjects the adults to that of the conditions of the children. Where the extra programmes fit because they could encourage this, or at least bridge the gap between some of those generations by their acts of conduct. The aim has been: to use architecture in order to heighten the status of the preschool. To engage more role models for the children. To strive towards curiosity, forwardness and security instead of the direction the society is heading towards today, where fear, isolation and suspicion inhibit our children’s ability to grow.
Singh, Namrata. "The Effects of Parent Training in Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) and Continued Support through Telemedicine on Gains in Communication in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/315907.
Full textIntroduction: With the increase in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) each year comes the need for individualized interventions necessary for children with autism. Many of the treatments currently available are time consuming, costly, and rely heavily on behavioral interventionists despite the lack of qualified interventionists to provide these services. Therefore, there is a growing recognition of the need for efficient, cost-effective treatment models that involves families in the intervention. This study examined the effects of continuous parent training and feedback for 3 months in Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) through telemedicine on responsivity to language opportunities in children with ASD versus a control group of parents receiving one week of PRT training alone. We hypothesized that with telemedicine support, the child’s verbal communication would increase. Methods: 30 child-parent dyads from Tucson, AZ were enrolled in this randomized control trial. Subjects were 24-60 months of age and met DSM-IV criteria for autism at the time of enrollment. All subjects received one week of intensive parent training at the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center (SARRC) in PRT. The support group received telemedicine feedback three times weekly for three months. Data was analyzed using two sample t-tests and Wilcoxon rank sum tests. Results: The control group had a mean responsivity in function verbal utterances of 64.3% and the telemedicine group had a 62.7% verbal responsivity rate prior to initiation of telemedicine support. At three month follow-up, the control group had a mean responsivity rate of 58.6% and the telemedicine group had a mean responsivity of 64.3%. A two sample t-test showed a no significant difference between the two groups with a p-value of 0.51. Conclusions: This study did not find any significant difference between the telemedicine and control groups. However, there is a trend towards increased verbal communication in the telemedicine group. We therefore recommend further studies to determine the utility of telemedicine and parent training in PRT in the treatment of children with ASD.
