Abstract:
Seven new species of Tobantilla Casal are described: T. aleatrix Williams, Brothers & Pitts, sp. nov. (Argentina), T. andrikos Williams, Brothers & Pitts, sp. nov. (Colombia), T. drosos Williams, Brothers & Pitts, sp. nov. (Argentina), T. ephemeros Williams, Brothers & Pitts, sp. nov. (Argentina, Uruguay), T. kolasma Williams, Brothers & Pitts, sp. nov. Four of these species represent the first males described in Tobantilla. Tobantilla frigidula (Cresson), comb. nov. and the two original members of Tobantilla, T. charrasca Casal and T. montonera Casal, are redescribed. A new genus that is apparently closely related to Pseudomethoca Ashmead, but closely resembles Tobantilla, is described: Gogoltilla Williams, Brothers & Pitts, gen. nov., based on both sexes of Gogoltilla chichikovi Williams, Brothers & Pitts, sp. nov. (Argentina).

Abstract:
In a pioneering classic, Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts proposed a model of the central nervous system. Motivated by EEG recordings of normal brain activity, Chvátal and Goldsmith asked whether these dynamical systems can be engineered to produce trajectories that are irregular, disorderly, and apparently unpredictable. We show that they cannot build weak pseudorandom functions.

Nine species are new records for the country: Ageniella (Ageniella) bruesi (Banks, 1928),Ageniella (Ageniella) violaceipes (Cresson, 1865), Aporinellus medianus Banks, 1917, Auplopus bellus (Cresson, 1865),Caliadurgus maestris Alayo, 1969, Drepanaporus antillarum (Bradley, 1944), Drepanaporus collaris (Cresson, 1865),Epipompilus pulcherrimus (Evans, 1955), and Priocnemis cornica (Say, 1836). Pompilus flavopictus Smith, 1862 is ajunior synonym of Poecilopompilus mixtus (Fabricius, 1794), syn. nov. and Odontaporus simulatrix (Bradley, 1944) isjunior synonym of Drepanaporus collaris (Cresson, 1865), syn. nov. New combination is proposed for Aporus (Aporus)antillarum (Bradley, 1944) which is transferred to Drepanaporus. Hitherto unknown males of Ageniella (Ageniella)domingensis (Banks, 1944) and Drepanaporus antillarum (Bradley, 1944) are described and illustrated. Abstract:
A new genus of Mutillidae from southern California, Schusterphotopsis Pitts, is described and illustrated, including the new species Schusterphotopsis barghesti Pitts. The genus can be distinguished from males of other sphaeropthalmine genera by the dilated and deeply emarginated condition of the mandibles, the posterior position and shape of the mesosternal processes, the presence of lateral carinae on the hypopygidium, and the flattened condition of the hypopygidium. A discussion of this new genus’s relationship to Acrophotopsis and Dilophotopsis is given.

Abstract:
Jonathan Bernier recently responded to Stanley Porter and Andrew Pitts’ article on epistemology in jshj . In this rejoinder, Porter and Pitts expose Bernier’s perpetual failure to understand the central terminology in this debate. Their response to Bernier reveals his clear confusion surrounding technical (even if basic) philosophical nomenclature in contemporary epistemology. Consequently, Bernier turns out to be just as committed to internalism as those he attempts to rescue from it. Their biggest disappointment, however, turns upon Bernier’s inability to engage the central argument of their original article. Their case rested entirely upon the crippling Gettier-style counterexamples to internalism and, by extension, critical realism. Yet, Gettier never makes an appearance in Bernier’s article. One can only speculate why Bernier would write an article-length response that neglects to address this argument. Whatever the cause, this oversight deeply undermines Bernier’s entire project by leaving Porter and Pitts’ original argument unscathed and firmly intact.

A nonlinear recurrence involving a piecewise constant McCulloch–Pitts function and two 2-periodic coefficient sequences is investigated. By allowing the threshold parameter to vary from 0+ to +∞, we work out a complete bifurcation analysis for the asymptotic behaviors of the corresponding solutions. We show that there are four steady state solutions and that all solutions will tend to one of them. We hope that our results will be useful in further investigating neural networks involving the McCulloch–Pitts function with threshold and more general periodic coefficients.

Abstract:
Abstract In their work McCulloch and Pitts describe an idea of representing all of nervous activity in terms of propositional logic. This idea was quickly challenged. One of reasons for this challenge was rising believe that logic is unable to describe most of human cognitive processes. In this paper we will analyse premises of original McCulloch and Pitts proposition. Following that, we will ask about ability of symbolic (logical) systems to represent human cognition. We will finish by analysing relation between symbolic and subsymbolic computing, in hope of bridging the gap between the two.

Abstract:
Nine species of the genus Dasymutilla Ashmead have been recorded from South America. One additional species, D. campogrande Manley & Pitts was erroneously recorded from Mexico but is from Brazil, and another species, D. colorado Cambra, Williams & Quintero was recently discovered in Colombia. Four of these nine Dasymutilla belong to a new genus, Quwitilla Williams, Bartholomay & Cambra, gen. nov., which includes: Q. peruviana (Suárez), comb. nov. (and its newly recognized female D. homochroma Suárez, syn. nov.; Q. bellatrix (Manley & Pitts), comb. nov. (based on female only); and Q. blattoserica (Kohl) comb. nov. (type species, already known from both sexes). Two others are actually synonyms of previously recognized Traumatomutilla André species: Dasymutilla brazilia Manley & Pitts, syn. nov. is a junior synonym of T. oculifera (Smith), and D. campogrande, syn. nov. is a junior synonym of T. inermis (Klug). One species is transferred out of Dasymutilla: Xystromutilla aequatorialis (André), comb. nov. Finally, updates and comments are provided on the distribution of D. araneoides (Smith), D. colorado, D. paradoxa (Gerstaecker), and D. pulchra (Smith), the only four South American species remaining in the genus Dasymutilla.

Abstract:
We study the longstanding problem of semantics for input/output (I/O) expressed using side-effects. Our vehicle is a small higher-order imperative language, with operations for interactive character I/O and based on ML syntax. Unlike previous theories, we present both operational and denotational semantics for I/O effects. We use a novel labelled transition system that uniformly expresses both applicative and imperative computation. We make a standard definition of bisimilarity and prove bisimilarity is a congruence using Howe's method.Next, we define a metalanguage [Mscr ] in which we may give a denotational semantics to [Oscr ]. [Mscr ] generalises Crole and Pitts' FIX-logic by adding in a parameterised recursive datatype, which is used to model I/O. [Mscr ] comes equipped both with an operational semantics and a domain-theoretic semantics in the category [Cscr ][Pscr ][Pscr ][Oscr ] of cppos (bottom-pointed posets with joins of ω-chains) and Scott continuous functions. We use the [Cscr ][Pscr ][Pscr ][Oscr ] semantics to prove that [Mscr ] is computationally adequate for the operational semantics using formal approximation relations. The existence of such relations is based on recent work of Pitts (Pitts 1994b) for untyped languages, and uses the idea of minimal invariant objects due to Freyd.A monadic-style textual translation into [Mscr ] induces a denotational semantics on [Oscr ]. Our final result validates the denotational semantics: if the denotations of two [Oscr ] programs are equal, then the [Oscr ] programs are in fact operationally equivalent.
