Abstract:

Andersson, Michael. "An Experimental Evaluation of PIT’s Mutation Operators." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen för datavetenskap, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-142506.

Full text
Abstract:
Mutation testing is a fault-finding software testing technique that creates mutants by injecting a syntactic change into the source code. This technique operates by evaluating the ability of a testsuite to detect mutants, which is used to asses the quality of a test suite. The information from mutation testing can be used to improve the quality of a test suite by developing additional test cases. It is a promising technique, but the expensive nature of mutation testing has prevented its wide spread, practical use. One approach to make mutation testing more efficient is selective mutation testing. This approach proposes to use a subset of the available mutation operators, thereby reducing the number of mutants generated which will lead to a reduced execution time. According to theory many mutants are redundant and do not provide any useful information in the development of additional test cases. This study will evaluate PIT, a mutation testing tool, by using selective mutation testing on five programs, and compare the effectiveness of PIT with MuJava. The results showed that PIT’s default operators generated a small and effective set of mutants and at the same time giving a satisfying mutation score. However, there was no significant difference in mutation score produced by the different sets of operators. The test suites adequate for PIT managed to detect 75-85% of MuJava’s mutants, which is relatively good when taken into consideration that PIT generated less than half as many mutants.

Abstract:
Two important developments are addressed by this dissertation. First, the Psychological Inventory of Criminal Thinking Styles-Simplified Version (PICTS-SV) was examined in relation to the original PICTS. Second, the vulnerability of the PICTS-SV to intentional risk minimization (RM) was tested. Two separate studies recruited a total of 150 offenders from a court-mandated residential substance use treatment facility. As expected, Study I established the PICTS-SV's good concurrent validity with the PICTS, especially at the broad composite scale level. For Study II, criminal thinking failed to show the anticipated convergence with HCR-20 risk classifications or forensic correlates. Potential explanations, including a restricted range of risk levels in this sample, are discussed. As a particular strength, the findings highlight that the PICTS-SV, in contrast to many risk measures, displays robust resistance to RM distortion, although revisions to its Df-r validity scale are warranted. These results overall demonstrate strong evidence of the PICTS-SV's utility for assessing a dynamic criminogenic need to inform effective interventions and accurate risk determinations.

Brenna, Dwayne Scott. "George Dibdin Pitt : his life and work." Thesis, Royal Holloway, University of London, 2000. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.395531.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a compendious study of George Dibdin pitt's life and work. While the emphasis has been on offering a balanced view of Dibdin Pitt's contributions to theatre and literature, I have also chosen to highlight the psychological complexity of his works. Chapter One features a biography of Dibdin Pitt, proving him to be at the lower end of a low-status profession. Chapter Two examines the Britannia Theatre, and Dibdin Pitt's contributions to that theatre, between 1844 and 1851. In Chapter Three, I will deal with Dibdin pitt's domestic melodramas, showing them to be, like other domestic melodramas of the period, politically conservative. Chapter Four explores anxiety dreams and trauma-induced dreams as they are presented in Dibdin pitt's Gothic melodramas and in other Gothic literature of the age. Chapter Five is concerned with Dibdin Pitt's military melodramas as they compare with Amherst's The Battle of Waterloo. In Chapter Six, I will concentrate on Dibdin pitt's nautical melodramas, comparing them with Jerrold's Black-Eyed Susan, and discussing Dibdin pitt's 2 oscillation between masculine and feminine portrayals of the Jack Tar. Chapter Seven will feature a discussion of Dibdin pitt's most famous crime melodrama (and perhaps the most famous crime melodrama of the period) The String of Pearls. In Chapter Eight, I will study the Gothic settings of Dibdin Pitt's two penny press novels The Sea-Fiend and The Wreck of the Heart. Chapter Nine will offer someconclusive remarks, demonstrating that the psychological complexities of Dibdin pitt's work have largely gone unnoticed or underestimated until recently. The second part of the dissertation is an annotated checklist of a broad cross-section of Dibdin Pitt's plays, listed alphabetically. Sub-genre, and date and venue of production, are noted in each entry

Abstract:
The long-standing problem of adequate formalization of local names in mathematical formulae and semantics of references in object-oriented languages taken “as is” without objects, is discussed. Reasons why the existing approaches cannot be considered suitable solutions, are explained. An introduction to the relatively recent works on the theories of names and references of the group headed by Andrew Pitts, is given. The notion of referential transparency, in which contextual equivalence is used instead of the usual equality of values, is analyzed. This is the main property, which these theories are based upon: it is preserved when a purely functional language is extended with names and references as data. It is argued that such referential transparency, along with many others, can be preserved for mutable objects that change to a limited extent. This leads to a model of computation between functional and object-oriented ones, allowing for a deterministic parallel implementation.

Abstract:
The article substantiates the necessity to develop training methods of computer simulation of neural networks in the spreadsheet environment. The systematic review of their application to simulating artificial neural networks is performed. The authors distinguish basic approaches to solving the problem of network computer simulation training in the spreadsheet environment, joint application of spreadsheets and tools of neural network simulation, application of third-party add-ins to spreadsheets, development of macros using the embedded languages of spreadsheets; use of standard spreadsheet add-ins for non-linear optimization, creation of neural networks in the spreadsheet environment without add-ins and macros. After analyzing a collection of writings of 1890-1950, the research determines the role of the scientific journal “Bulletin of Mathematical Biophysics”, its founder Nicolas Rashevsky and the scientific community around the journal in creating and developing models and methods of computational neuroscience. There are identified psychophysical basics of creating neural networks, mathematical foundations of neural computing and methods of neuroengineering (image recognition, in particular). The role of Walter Pitts in combining the descriptive and quantitative theories of training is discussed. It is shown that to acquire neural simulation competences in the spreadsheet environment, one should master the models based on the historical and genetic approach. It is indicated that there are three groups of models, which are promising in terms of developing corresponding methods – the continuous two-factor model of Rashevsky, the discrete model of McCulloch and Pitts, and the discrete-continuous models of Householder and Landahl.

Abstract:
As part of ARL’s Research Library Impact Framework initiative, a team from the University of Pittsburgh Library System addressed how special collections support teaching, learning, and research. This project developed a toolkit that allows measurement of impact of engagement with primary sources. The University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) initially worked with University of California, Irvine (UCI) to develop student learning outcomes based on the ACRL/RBMS–SAA Guidelines for Primary Source Literacy and used a logic model framework to identify three types of outcomes: initial (attainment of new skills and knowledge), intermediate (behavioral change), and long-term (change in status). Pitt studied two successive cohorts of their Archival Scholars Research Awards (ASRA), a semester-long undergraduate scholarship program that matches each student with a University of Pittsburgh Library System (ULS) librarian/archivist and a Pitt faculty mentor to engage in an in-depth research project. Next, Pitt refined, expanded, and tested the toolkit for use in class visits to assess student learning and archivist/librarian performance in supporting instructor learning goals. The mapping and assessment toolkit Pitt developed may be applied to teaching with primary sources across different disciplines and institutional settings.
