Abstract:
Pitched is a novella made up of short stories. It is about breaking in, breaking down and breaking out of the advertising industry. My protagonist loves and hates this confusing world she lives in. She is tough but also emotional and anxious, often trapped between her strong desires and her strong morality. She finds herself both attracted to and repulsed by the people who inhabit this world - sexy wolf-like men, and prickly female execs alike. I have been inspired by the work of Lidia Yuknavitch, Kate Zambreno, Michelle Tea and Chris Kraus to create a universal woman I can identify with.

Clothier, Andrew Charlton. "Switched reluctance motor drives with fully pitched windings." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/831.

Full text
Abstract:
Switched reluctance motors with fully pitched windings are a relatively recent advancementin motor technology having only been in existences ince the early 1990's. They have been shown previously to offer greater torque per unit copper loss, and hence higher torque density, than conventional switched reluctance machines with short pitched windings. Early work by Mecrow and Barrass has demonstrated operation of prototype machines, developed and assessedv arious methods of control strategy, and made some comparisons of machine efficiency and inverter rating. The results presented here build on this early work by, in essence, examining the aspects of machine design, control strategy and inverter topology that affect drive performance and cost. Detailed comparisons of inverter rating and machine efficiency are made under equal conditions with the various methods of excitation that are possible. This is achieved with results from a test rig, including temperature rise tests, and the use of accurate dynamic simulation. The latter is developed to accurately model the motor with its strong mutual coupling between phases, various inverter topologies and the details of the controller such as digital PWM. As a result comparisons between simulated and measured results are shown to be very good. The fundamentals of machine design are examined with a view to optimising the machine for fully pitched windings. Previous work has indicated that good results are achieved when a conventional machine is simply rewound, however it is shown that further improvements can be made. Proposals are made to improve the drive in terms of both machine performance and power electronic rating. A search method is proposed that optimises current waveshape for either maximum torque per unit copper loss, or smooth torque for lowest loss. The method works over the entire speed range, as the rate of change of flux linkage is taken into account. Three alternative power electronic converters are developed, one of which is also particularly suitable for the short pitched winding machine. Aspects of silicon rating, current controllability, and current sensor requirements are discussed.

Abstract:
The fully-pitched winding arrangement is one of the most radical changes in the design of doubly-salient reluctance motors in recent times. By replacing conventional shortpitched windings with fully-pitched windings, the resulting machine has a strong and position dependant mutual coupling between phases. The major torque producing mechanism is due to changes in mutual inductance with rotor position. This enables the windings to be better utilised, and with correct selection of excitation all phases can contribute useful torque all of the time. The increased winding utilisation requires a lower MMF per phase in comparison with a short-pitch wound machine with a single phase excited. Given a suitable winding configuration and machine dimensions, the copper losses for a given torque can be significantly lower than an equivalent conventional switched reluctance machine. Operation of a three phase fully-pitched winding switched reluctance machine has been studied theoretically, in simulation and experimentally. The experimental drive comprises of a D132 frame 12:8 machine, IGBT power converter and DSP controller. Operation with unipolar phase currents has been investigated over a wide speed range and performance compared with a conventional switched reluctance machine. Bipolar operation with several different excitation patterns has been investigated. Unipolar operation gives the largest torque/speed envelope with a simple controller, although bipolar modes can equal this with a more complex controller. Results show that for equal RMS phase current the average torque produced by four different modes of excitation are approximately equal. However, there is a large difference in the torque ripple and acoustic noise performance of each mode. Current control in switched reluctance machines is complicated by the non-linear nature of the load. By controlling flux-linkage rather than current a linear load model can be used. A discrete time 'dead-beat' flux-linkage controller has been implemented which gives superior phase current control performance to other types of controller with the same sample interval. A new method of constant torque operation based on 'flux ramps' has been proposed. This method gives predictable performance and enables constant torque operation over a wide speed range. A Genetic Algorithm has been shown to be very effective when applied to the problem of optimising the 'flux ramps' for minimum torque ripple. A speed controller has been implemented which makes use of the Genetic Algorithm optimised flux ramps to give smooth torque over a wide speed range.

Abstract:
An arched structure provides an effective load carrying system for large span structures. When it comes to long span roof structures, timber arches are one of the best solutions from both structural and aesthetical point of view. Glulam arched structures are often designed using slender elements due to economic consideration. Such slender cross-section shape increases the risk of instability. Instability analysis of straight members such as beam and column are explicitly defined in Eurocode. However, for instability of curved members no analytical approach is provided in the code, thus some numerical method is required. Nonetheless, an approximation is frequently used to obtain the effective buckling length for the arched structures in the plane of arches. In this master thesis a linear buckling analysis is carried out in Abaqus to obtain an optimal effective buckling length both in-plane and out-of-plane for circular glulam arched structures. The elastic springs are used to simulate the overall stiffness of the bracing system. The results obtained by the FE simulations are compared with a simple approximation method. Besides, the forces acting on the bracings system is obtained based on 3D geometric nonlinear stress analysis of the timber trusses. Our findings conclude that the approximation method overestimates the effective buckling length for the circular glulam arched structures. In addition, the study indicates that the position of the lateral supports along the length of the arch is an important design aspect for buckling behaviour of the arched structures. Moreover, in order to acquire an effective structure lateral supports are needed both in extrados and intrados. Furthermore, instead of using elastic spring elements to simulate the overall stiffness of the bracing system, a full 3D simulation of two parallel arches was performed. It was shown that the springs are stronger than the real bracing system for the studied arch.

Abstract:
Wind energy is identified a promising energy resource in Sri Lanka. Therefore, it is important to use proper technologies for efficient energy capturing in order to minimize cost of energy. Small scale wind turbines are usually installed in constricted places (particularly in urban areas) where wind flow is turbulent and difficult to predict. Savonious type vertical axis wind turbines are important due to several reasons such as good response to turbulent winds, high initial torque, low cost, low noise, less maintenance. In this study, a modified flat plate type Savonius wind rotor was proposed to cost effectively harness wind energy in constricted places. Generally, vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) are less efficient than horizontal axis wind turbines, one reason behind this issue is wind force difference between the 2 sides of the axis is small and due to this reason torque is small and power generation capacity is less.A prototype of the proposed VAWT was fabricated and the performance was determined by acquiring experimental data. Artificial wind blow which was generated by a huge fan was used to measure rotational speed and torque characteristics at varying wind speeds. Data were collected with 1-second sampling time and a data acquisition system was developed under this study. In the proposed design one side of the turbine blades are facing the wind direction in order to capture maximum force while other side is edging the blades to have minimum opposite torque. With this concept it is expected to maximize the torque of the axis and generate more power. A sort of a passive pitch mechanism is therefore utilized in order to save energy and simplify the system. Turbine blades are simple flat plates and it eliminates usage of complex aero foils. Due to the simplicity of this design it would be possible to use this turbine for domestic electricity generation at affordable costs.Nowadays, net metering systems are being promoted in Sri Lanka and it would be beneficial to introduce low cost VAWT which operates at low winds as well as turbulent wind conditions. Based on typical household hourly load profile, viability of proposed vertical axis wind turbine was evaluated by considering rural and urban wind regimes in Sri Lanka. The costs of wind energy at two selected locations were determined in the context of net metering.

Heron, Ismael. "Vortex burst behavior of a dynamically pitched delta wing under the influence of a von Kàrmàn vortex street and unsteady freestream." Diss., Wichita State University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/1487.

Full text
Abstract:
An experimental investigation was undertaken at Wichita State University in order to quantify the vortex burst behavior of a pitching 70-degree sweep delta wing subjected to a variable freestream velocity (accelerating or decelerating flow), as well as to an impinging von Kàrmàn vortex street generated by a cylinder placed ahead of the apex. The experiments were inspired by flow features present in the flow field of an aircraft executing a “Cobra” maneuver. A total of 222 test runs were conducted which resulted in the analysis of 6481 video frames for the von Kàrmàn experiments and 8566 video frames for the variable velocity experiments. It was found that at different a−ranges and velocity ratios, accelerating the flow produced a mild to strong negative effect (i.e., an acceleration of the forward propagation velocity) on the burst location. This negative effect was almost independent of the actual acceleration or range of a over which it occurred. Deceleration, on the other hand, was found to delay the forward burst movement along the vortex core. This was consistent for the pitch rates tested, and in all cases resulted in a momentary reduction of the forward propagation of the burst location. In the more extreme cases where the velocity ratio was large (Vstart/Vfinal =2) a complete stop to the forward burst movement was possible. The most important result from the von Kàrmàn experiments was that the burst could be observed by the “jumping” of the burst location forward towards the wing’s apex in response to the convection of the von Kàrmàn wake filament. This was accomplished at both a regular frequency of approximately 3 Hz, and at higher non-uniform frequency centered around 5 Hz, the only difference between the two being the degree of change in the burst location. The experiments performed here represent an initial step towards a more complex Cobra maneuver experiment.

Abstract:
Thirty nonparent adults were assigned to either a High CAP group (n=15) or a Low CAP group (n=15) based upon their scores on the Child Abuse Potential Inventory. Each subject's heart rate, skin conductance level and diastolic blood pressure were assessed while listening to a series of 4 high- and 4 normal-pitched infant cries. Subjects then rated the same cries on 6 perceptual scale items. Results indicated that the adults in the High CAP group showed a reliably higher resting heart rate following cry presentation and tended to respond with more heart rate change than adults in the Low CAP group. Adults in the High CAP group also responded to the normal-pitched cries with a higher skin conductance level than the Low CAP adults. Irrespective of CAP group, listeners' skin conductance level became attenuated in response to the normal-, but not the high-pitched infant cry sounds. In addition, all listeners perceived the high-pitched cry sounds as more aversive, arousing, distressing, urgent and sick sounding than the normal-pitched cry sounds. Results are discussed in terms of the importance of examining both adult and child characteristics that may mediate individual responsivity to infant cues.

Full text
Abstract:
A recombinat Chinese Hamster Ovary (rCHO) cell line designated as CHO SEAP was utilized in this investigation to optimize protein production. Two bench top stirred-tank bioreactors, namely a pitched-blade and a packed-bed basket bioreactor, were utilized for a comparative study to determine which bioreactor would produce the best results in terms of protein production. The objective of this research project was to provide basic data that shows cells cultured in a packed-bed basket bioreactor in perfusion mode will generate more protein product than cells in batch mode suspension culture with a pitched-blade bioreactor. The packed-bed bioreactor creates a homeostatic environment similar to the environment found in vivo, where waste products are constantly removed and fresh nutrients are replenished. Closed batch cultures do not provide a homeostatic environment. In batch culture systems, nutrients are depleted and waste products accumulate. The results from this experiment could help investigators involved in protein and/or vaccine production facilities select the appropriate bioreactor and mode of operation to optimize cell productivity for generation of a specific protein product. CHO cells have been used for the production of vaccines, recombinant therapeutic proteins, and monoclonal antibodies, and these cells are now the cell line of choice in the biopharmaceutical industry. Traditional vaccine production methods in egg embryos are slow and outdated, whereas roller bottle-based cell culture techniques are time consuming and have limited scalability. These limitations justify the need for development of stirred tank bioreactors. Cells cultured in a packed-bed bioreactor are not exposed to hydrodynamic forces, as is the case with pitched-blade bioreactors, allowing for maximum growth and protein expression. This mode of operation involves the constant removal of media depleted of nutrients and the addition of fresh media with more nutrients to keep the cells growing. Long run times decrease the constant need for re-seeding cells and re-establishing seed cultures, thus, reducing setup time and labor dramatically. Secreted products are automatically separated from cells in perfusion, eliminating filtration and membrane fouling. A detailed description of both modes of operation are discussed in this thesis.

Abstract:

Presti, G. "SIGNAL TRANSFORMATIONS FOR IMPROVING INFORMATION REPRESENTATION, FEATURE EXTRACTION AND SOURCE SEPARATION." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/470676.

Abstract:
This thesis is about new methods of signal representation in time-frequency domain, so that required information is rendered as explicit dimensions in a new space. In particular two transformations are presented: Bivariate Mixture Space and Spectro-Temporal Structure-Field. The former transform aims at highlighting latent components of a bivariate signal based on the behaviour of each frequency base (e.g. for source separation purposes), whereas the latter aims at folding neighbourhood information of each point of a R^2 function into a vector, so as to describe some topological properties of the function. In the audio signal processing domain, the Bivariate Mixture Space can be interpreted as a way to investigate the stereophonic space for source separation and Music Information Retrieval tasks, whereas the Spectro-Temporal Structure-Field can be used to inspect spectro-temporal dimension (segregate pitched vs. percussive sounds or track pitch modulations). These transformations are investigated and tested against state-of-the-art techniques in fields such as source separation, information retrieval and data visualization. In the field of sound and music computing, these techniques aim at improving the frequency domain representation of signals such that the exploration of the spectrum can be achieved also in alternative spaces like the stereophonic panorama or a virtual percussive vs. pitched dimension.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate how a number of graphic designers experience the pitch from the perspective of the professional role as a graphic designer; something that’s been rather neglected within the scientific field. The study is based on ten respondent interviews and one informant interview. All respondents are full-time employees at agencies in Stockholm with a distinct direction towards graphic design. The study has a qualitative approach with a case-study character. The data was collected and analysed with inspiration from Grounded Theory and an abductive method. From the empiric data collection three theoretic areas emerged: the professional role, the design process and the client-agency relationship. The results show, among other things, that the pitch is a complex phenomenon and rather hard to define. However, it was possible to identify a pitch process, which could be divided into four major steps: the brief, problem formulation, idea and concept development and the presentation. The study indicates a number of experienced problems concerning the different steps in the process as well as problems in the client-agency relationship. According to earlier research in the relationship subject, the pitch doesn’t make up the conditions for graphic designers to develop ideal design and long-lasting relationships.

Abstract:
The aim of this diploma thesis is the design of bearing construction of the Exhibition gallery in Olomouc. The building is of irregular shape with the biggest span of 50 m. The bearing structure in the highest point goes up to 14,6 m. The main design material is the glue-laminated timber GL24h and GL32h. The optimization of chosen parts of the structure has been made and the best option was then used in the detailed structural calculation. The bearing structure consists of circular columns to which the floor beams and roof trusses are connected. The irregular structure of the gallery comprises of three different roof types – flat trafficable roof, double-pitched glass roof formed by pitched cambered trusses and single-pitch roof spanning over the central part of a 20,7 m span. Within the thesis the design and check of the main structure members and connections has been made. The entire structure is pinned and its stiffness is secured by the system of tension rods and rigid floor and roof construction respectively.

Simpson, Murray R. "Sustainable drainage of sports pitches." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2016. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/20339.

Full text
Abstract:
The drainage behaviour of sports pitches is not well understood nor has performance been measured in the past. Within planning authorities there is a perceived contribution of pitch water discharge to local flood risk; whereby all the rainfall surface runoff is rapidly channelled through the drainage system to the pitch outfall. However, empirical evidence from industry suggested that this may not be a realistic assumption from observations of low drainage volumes yielded from pitch drainage systems. Furthermore, discharge constraints imposed have in many cases resulted in grossly over-designed off-line drainage attenuation systems for new sports developments through lack of understanding. In contrast, sports pitches indeed have the potential to enhance the attenuation performance of the subsoils and provide localised effective management of surface water runoff, and a significant storage volume if designed appropriately The findings in this thesis confirm that pitch bases demonstrate the key functions that are in fact reflected in the design requirements of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS). This PhD research project was conducted to investigate and document the performance of common pitch construction and drainage systems to better characterise the key drainage mechanisms that occur and control the flow of surface rain water through the pitch to the discharge outfall. The project developed a triangulated approach to the investigations, comprising: field measurements of climate and discharge behaviour at a range of artificial and natural turf pitches in England; laboratory physical model testing of pitch component hydraulics; and predictive mathematical modelling of how a pitch system may be expected to perform hydraulically based on key material and system drainage principles. The field monitoring systems were developed as part of the research, as was bespoke laboratory physical simulation of a pitch construction. It was found that very variable yields (% out versus % in) of water were detected from the monitored field sites. The values varied across a range of < 1 to 88%, with the natural turf providing higher yields in general. The antecedent weather patterns did not show a clear relationship with yield as might have been expected. However, it was not always possible to retrieve detailed information on the subsoil conditions or hydraulic capability reducing the conclusiveness of the discharge flow measurements. The scaled laboratory testing of pitch materials established the importance and magnitude of barriers to percolation of surface water through the layers of the pitch constructions, in particular artificial pitch profiles. It was found that a significant proportion of the total rainfall head was required to instigate percolation of surface water through the carpet and into the pitch i.e. breakthrough head. In addition, several constituent pitch materials exhibited water retention characteristics that reduced that rate of free percolation of surface water through the pitch profile. The net impact is to reduce the net available head of water to further drive flow through the layers to the pipe network drainage system. A conceptual hydraulic model, developed from the literature, was further developed into a simple numerical model. The model was informed by parameters determined from the laboratory measurements and key groundwater drainage flow theory to attempt to replicate a pitch drainage system. It was envisaged that the models would be validated by the field data, although this proved challenging as a result of the field data variability and the multivariate nature of the influences on flows measured. A key finding of the modelling was further establishing the likely head of water generated at the interfaces between the bottom of the granular sub-base and the pipe collection drainage system beneath. This resulted in limited pipe infiltration and low total flows to the outfall, further corroborating the project field results and the anecdotal observations from practitioners. The combined unique data sets provide a refined model for sports pitch drainage to both reinforce understanding and inform practical design and operation.

Abstract:
Pitcher is a prototype which makes it easier for inexperienced guitar players to tune their guitars without any prior knowledge required. This thesis will explore how the construction varies between the usage of DC and a stepper motor, how reliable the tuner is and how long it takes to tune the guitar. The tuner will capture sound with a microphone and calculate the current frequency of the string with YIN autocorrelation. Based on the frequency a control system regulator is used to determine the speed and direction of a motor which turns the tuning peg, this is repeated until the string is in tune. 30 tests were conducted from different starting frequencies, and the time it took for the tuner to find the right pitch and the string’s corresponding frequency was measured. Some of the measurements were a couple of Hz off pitch, and only about half of the frequencies measured belonged to the interval where there is no noticeable dierence of the pitch, therefore the tuner could not be considered reliable. The time it takes to tune the guitar is dependent on how far off pitch the string is andthe dierence in time does not depend linearly with the starting frequency, it increases faster the further off pitch the string is.The tuner is portable and to apply the tuner to the guitar it is held and placed on the tuning peg with one hand as the other hand is plucking the string.
