Abstract:
A latex of amphiphilic star polymer particles, functionalized in the hydrophobic core with nixantphos and containing P(MAA-co-PEOMA) linear chains in the hydrophilic shell (nixantphos-functionalized core-crosslinked micelles, or nixantphos@CCM), has been prepared in a one-pot three-step convergent synthesis using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in water. The synthesis involves polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) in the second step and chain crosslinking with di(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (DEGDMA) in the final step. The core consists of a functionalized polystyrene, obtained by incorporation of a new nixantphos-functionalized styrene monomer (nixantphos-styrene), which is limited to 1 mol%. The nixantphos-styrene monomer was synthesized in one step by nucleophilic substitution of the chloride of 4-chloromethylstyrene by deprotonated nixantphos in DMF at 60 °C, without interference of either phosphine attack or self-induced styrene polymerization. The polymer particles, after loading with the [Rh(acac)(CO)2] precatalyst to yield Rh-nixantphos@CCM, function as catalytic nanoreactors under aqueous biphasic conditions for the hydroformylation of 1-octene to yield n-nonanal selectively, with no significant amounts of the branched product 2-methyl-octanal.

Abstract:
Basic education is the foundation for people to gain more knowledge in the process of growing up and living. High buildings rise from the ground. What does basic education exert to cultivate the people is the foundation for building a house. Therefore, basic education is such an impor-tant and basic project to improve the quality of people. Since China’s reform and opening and the re-introduction of the college entrance examination in the late 1970s, basic education has continuously improved and developed with more and more attention. China started to participate in the Program for International Students Assessment PISA5 in 2009. Up to now, China has par-ticipated in four sessions of PISA with relatively good grades6. The results of the PISA can help to examine the education quality, fairness and development efficiency, establish and improve an education monitoring indicator system, and promote education reforms for both China and the other countries in the world. The progress of China’s basic education and education with Chinese characteristics has contributed to China’s all-round development, which also provided references for other countries. In the meantime, PISA’s analysis of China and other countries also reflect the parts of China’s basic education that need to be promoted and emphasized.

Abstract:
Purpose Since the publication of its first results in 2000, the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) implemented by the OECD has repeatedly been the subject of heated debate. In late 2014 controversy flared up anew, with the most severe critics going so far as to call for a halt to the programme. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the methodological design of PISA and the ideological basis of scientific and policy arguments invoked for and against it. Design/methodology/approach The authors examine the soundness of the survey methodology and identify the conflicting interpretations and values fuelling the debate. Findings The authors find that while PISA has promoted the focus on the important subject of children's education worldwide there are legitimate concerns about what PISA measures, and how. The authors conclude that the OECD should be more transparent in the documentation of the methodological choices that underlie the creation of the data and more explicit about the impact of these choices on the results. More broadly, the authors advise caution in the attempt to derive and apply evidence-based policy in the domain of education; the authors furthermore propose an alternative model of social inquiry that is sensitive and robust to the concerns of the various actors and stakeholders that may be involved in a given policy domain. Originality/value The issues and tensions surrounding the PISA survey can be better understood in the framework of post-normal science (PNS), the application of which to the PISA controversy offers a potential solution to a stalemate.

Abstract This essay aims to shed light on the period spent by Catherine of Siena in Pisa during the year 1375. Catherine was not only a woman of faith and devotion, but also a leading political player in late 14th-century Tuscany, in direct contact with the Apostolic See through the members of her clique. Why did the lord of Pisa, Pietro Gambacorta, summon her to his city? What networks of relations did Catherine’s arrival fit into? What were the tangible consequences of her stay in Pisa?

Abstract:
Often the use of repeated questions and answers is given by the teacher so that they cannot analyze students' mathematical literacy abilities. There needs to be a solution to the PISA problem so that student competencies can be seen clearly. The teacher should analyze this so that it does not happen continuously so that a way can be found to overcome it. The purpose of this study was to determine the mathematical literacy of junior high school students when working on PISA questions in the Minang context. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. The results of the PISA test and interviews became the data in this study. To find out more detailed data, the authors took the research subjects based on the results of the PISA test later and categorized the subjects into the highest, medium and lowest. In this study, researchers used indicators of mathematical literacy level according to PISA. The results of this study indicate that in formulating the situation mathematically is 75%, reasoning 33.05% and solving problems 14.44%. That is, on average, students are only able to answer problems only up to level 2 PISA, that the ability to formulate situations mathematically.

Abstract:
Pisa syndrome is known to be a condition in which there is sustained involuntary flexion of the body and head to one side and slight rotation of the trunk so the person appears to lean like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The development of Pisa syndrome is most commonly associated with prolonged treatment with antipsychotics. Although less frequently, Pisa syndrome has been reported, in patients who are receiving other medications (such as cholinesterase inhibitors and antiemetics), in those not receiving medication (idiopathic Pisa syndrome) and also patients with neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease and multiple system atrophy. We report a case of a 67 year- old male diagnosed with Schizophrenia for 20 years. He has been following a treatment with Clozapine 400 mg/day for 4 years. Amisulpiride was added to the established regimen of antipsychotic and increased during the last month reaching the doses of 600 mg/day. Three weeks later he was observed walking with a tilt toward the right. A first physical examination revealed sustained tonic flexion of the trunk to the right side. No deficits or mental status changes during neurological exploration were shown. We prescribed biperidene hydrochloride therapy. After 24 hour side effects disappeared. As far as we know, no many cases of amisulpride-induced Pisa syndrome in the literature have been reported. This abstract presents a case of amisulpride induced Pisa syndrome.

Abstract:
This essay investigates the literary exchanges between the Irish poet and agronomist George William Tighe and Percy Bysshe Shelley in Pisa, where the former lived with Margaret King Mount Cashell, alias ‘Mrs Mason’, a radical Irish writer and former pupil of Mary Wollstonecraft. After moving to Pisa in 1820, Shelley began daily visits to the Mason-Tighe household, sourcing from Tighe's library a wealth of reading material on agricultural chemistry and botany, alongside Irish political and historical titles. Tighe's previously unexamined papers showcase his interests in Irish and Italian literature, republicanism, botany, and agriculture and reveal his links with the Lunar Society of Birmingham. Taking as a case study the first poem Shelley composed in Pisa, I argue that Tighe's agricultural pursuits shaped Shelley's political and botanical imagination in ‘The Sensitive-Plant’ and exerted a significant influence on Shelley's later poetry as a whole.

Abstract:
We examined the effects of chemical and reflex drives on the postinspiratory inspiratory activity (PIIA) of phrenic motoneurons using a single-fiber technique. Action potentials from “single” fibers were recorded from the C5 phrenic root together with contralateral mass phrenic activity (also from C5) in anesthetized, paralyzed, and artificially ventilated cats with intact vagus and carotid sinus nerves. Nerve fibers were classified as “early“ or “late” based on their onset of discharge in relation to mass phrenic activity during hyperoxic ventilation. Only the early fibers displayed PIIA but not the late fibers, even when their activity began earlier in inspiration with increased chemical drives. Isocapnic hypoxia increased, whereas hyperoxic hypercapnia shortened the duration of PIIA. Pulmonary stretch and “irritant” receptors inhibited PIIA. Hypercapnia and stimulation of peripheral chemoreceptors by lobeline excited both early and late units to the same extent, but hypoxic ventilation had a less marked excitatory effect on late fiber activity. Irritant receptor activation increased the activity of early more than late fibers. Hyperoxic hyperventilation eliminated late phrenic fiber activity, whereas early fibers became tonically active. Bilateral vagotomy abolished this sustained discharge in eight of nine early units, suggesting the importance of vagal afferents in producing tonic firing during hyperventilation. These results suggest that early and late phrenic fibers have different responses to chemical stimuli and to vagally mediated reflexes; late units do not discharge in postinspiratory period, whereas early fibers do; the PIIA is not affected in the same way by various chemical and vagal inputs; and early units that exhibit PIIA display tonic activity with hyperoxic hypocapnia.

Abstract:
Abstract Since 1984 INFN and University of Pisa scientists performing experiments at Fermilab have been running a two-month summer training program for Italian students at the lab. In 1984 the program involved only a few physics students from the University of Pisa, but it was later extended to other INFN groups and to engineering students. Since 2004 the program has been supported in part by the US Department of Energy (DOE) in the frame of an exchange agreement with INFN and has been run by the Cultural Association of Italians at Fermilab (CAIF). In 2007 the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies (Pisa) established an agreement with Fermilab to share the cost of four engineering students each year. In the almost 40 years of its history, the program has hosted at Fermilab approximately 550 Italian students from more than 20 Italian universities and from some non-Italian universities. In addition, in the years 2010-2019, with the support of the Italian National Institute of Astrophyics (INAF), the Italian Space Agency (ASI), and CAIF, 30 students were hosted in other US laboratories and universities. The Fermilab training programs spanned from data analysis to design and construction of particle detectors and accelerator components, R/D on superconductive elements, theory of accelerators, and analysis of astrophysical data. At the other US laboratories the offered training was on Space Science. In 2015 the University of Pisa endorsed the program as one of its own Summer Schools. The interns are enrolled as Pisa students for the duration of the internship. They are required to write summary reports published in the Fermilab and University of Pisa web pages. Upon positive evaluation by a University board, students are acknowledged 6 ECTS credits. The entire program is expected to expand further under CAIF management. An agreement has been signed between ASI and CAIF, for ASI to support yearly three two-months fellowships in US space science. In the following we inform on student recruiting, training programs, and final evaluation

The current investigation shows, in the first place, an analysis and theoretical approach for the concept of Reading competence. This reserach works as a basis to justify that PISA (creator of this concept) doesn’t evaluate what it says to evaluate. So, we propose a new model of evaluation to assess the level of Reading comprehension, getting closer to the concept of Reading competence than Pisa has traditionally done. This research has been carried out with the participation of up to 7 classes of 4ºESO, the realization of two tests- the before mentioned one and a second one corresponding to an excerpt of a PISA test- and the later analysis and statistical comparison between them to find differences (if any) that confirm our statements and theoretical principles. For this purpose, test T has been used for related samples. The statistical analysis let us check that the new Reading approach proposed in the new model of evaluation, through which we intend to approach the concept of Reading competence, hadas a main consequence a better performance of the students in the realization of this test; in comparison with the PISA excerpt that was used. This better efficiency in the carrying out, by the students participating, of the new test, include many investigative implications towards the understanding of different concepts related to Reading that, in many occasions, are easily confused, as well as implications of a practical nature, providing many orientations towards educational interventions in the Reading skill area.

Abstract:
Introduction: Heparin induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a severe prothrombotic condition, usually triggered by exposure to heparin products. It is characterized by platelet activation induced by the formation of antibodies to the platelet factor 4 (PF4)/ heparin polyanion complexes. Diagnostic algorithm includes clinical scoring (4T score) alongside serological test for detection of these antibodies (HIT-Ab), while serotonin release assay (SRA) remains the gold- standard for confirmation. The automated latex immunoturbidometric assay (LIA) has recently been FDA approved as a screening tool for HIT and is a potential alternative to the conventional particle immunofiltration assay (PIFA) for time-sensitive detection of HIT-Ab to guide treatment considerations. We recently introduced LIA in our institution. In this study, we present our experience with LIA in comparison to PIFA in the diagnosis of HIT. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of all the patients on whom a PIFA was ordered between March 2017 and March 2018 in our hospital. We collected information on the results of the PIFA and SRA (if available). We replaced PIFA with LIA for HIT screening. Then, we introduced a structured protocol for diagnosis of HIT in our institution by incorporating 4T scoring alongside LIA order in the electronic medical record (EMR), in December 2018. We reviewed the EMR of all the patients on whom HIT-Ab test (LIA) was ordered between January and June of 2019, and collected similar information as before. All the data were compiled in a single master excel sheet for calculation of performance characteristics (sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values) for both PIFA and LIA. A patient was considered to have the diagnosis of HIT if the result of SRA was available and positive. Results: In the first phase, a total of 31 orders for SRA was noted against 170 PIFA orders. Five patients had a positive SRA, of whom two were PIFA negative. Half the patients with a negative SRA result were positive for PIFA. Hence, the sensitivity and specificity of PIFA test for our study population were noted to be 60% and 50%, respectively. PIFA had a positive predictive value (PPV) of mere 18.75% for the diagnosis of HIT, whereas the negative predictive value (NPV) was found to be 86.66%. Introduction of structured protocol for HIT diagnosis substantially reduced the number of inappropriate SRA orders in the second phase. On review of data for six months with the new HIT-Ab test LIA, SRA was ordered in only eight patients, to go with 69 orders for the LIA. The result of LIA was positive in all three patients with a positive SRA, whereas it was false positive in four instances. Only one patient was negative for both LIA and SRA during this period. LIA was found to be 100% sensitive and 20% specific for the diagnosis of HIT in our sample. PPV and NPV for LIA were 42.85% and 100%, respectively. Conclusion: The sensitivity and specificity of LIA were found to be 100% and 20%, respectively, in our study population, which is different from the earlier report (Warkentin et al. 2017). The small sample size is a limitation of our study. Higher PPV and NPV for LIA, with its quick turnaround time, make it a useful alternative for the time-sensitive determination of post-test probability for HIT in patients. [HIT- Ab- Heparin Induced Thrombocytopenia Antibody, PIFA- Particle Immunofiltration Assay, LIA- Latex Immunoturbidometric Assay, SRA- Serotonin Release Assay, +ve- Positive, -ve - Negative, PPV- Positive Predictive Value, NPV- Negative Predictive Value] Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

AbstractAfter primary school, German pupils are given a secondary school track recommendation. This recommendation and the actual track choice are strongly associated with later life outcomes. Using data from the German PISA 2000 extension study, we analyze the effect of relative age on track recommendations and actual choice. Younger pupils and boys are less likely to be recommended to and enrolled in the academic track (Gymnasium), the most attractive track in terms of later life outcomes. Flexible enrollment and grade retention partly offset these effects. We find no convincing evidence that postponing the recommendation by lengthening primary school by 2 years reduces the age or gender bias.

Abstract:
Abstract Background The standard practice for diagnosis of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) involves a combination of 4T score and laboratory tests, such as enzyme immunoassay for detection of antibodies. We noted a lack of widespread use of 4T score in our practice setting. We also found that our laboratory utilized Particle Immunofiltration Assay (PIFA) for HIT screening, which has been shown to have questionable diagnostic utility in HIT diagnosis (Warkentin et al., 2007). The study aims to improve the rate of 4T score usage in conjunction with an improved laboratory diagnostic test for patients with suspected HIT in a cost-efficient manner. Method We initiated a quality improvement project involving the review of all patients with laboratory orders for PIFA testing between March 2017 to March 2018, explicitly assessing for documented 4T scores before the ordering of PIFA. Three of the investigators also calculated 4T scores for these patients at the time of laboratory testing and noted the results of the serotonin release assay (SRA), if ordered. We further collected data on any alternative anti-coagulation used in such patients for a cost-efficacy analysis later. Results A total of 170 PIFA tests were ordered during the period of investigation. Only five (0.02%) of these patients had a documented 4T score at the time of testing. One hundred thirteen patients (66.4%) had a low 4T score per investigator-calculation. Forty-seven patients (27.6%) were noted to have intermediate 4T scores. Lastly, ten patients (0.05%) were observed to have high 4T scores. A total of 32 SRAs were ordered; five of which were positive (four with an intermediate 4T score and one with high 4T score). PIFA was false-negative in two confirmed cases of positive SRA and false-positive in 13 instances of negative SRA. Thus, in this study, the sensitivity of PIFA was noted to be 60%, and specificity was observed to be 50%. Nineteen patients also received alternative parenteral anti-coagulation (fondaparinux or argatroban); seven of these were with low, eight with intermediate, and four with high 4T scores. Conclusion The study highlights the need for improving 4T score usage rates in our hospital as well as a need for switching to an alternative HIT screening test to promote patient safety and cost efficacy. Hence, we have begun the integration of 4T score with laboratory testing into the electronic medical record, alongside a shift in our HIT screening test from PIFA to the recently FDA-approved automated latex immunoturbidimetric assay. We will be continuing analysis of patients with suspected HIT for another six months to assess the effects of the above interventions. Figure. Figure. Abstract:
Highlight: Posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) aneurysms are rare in occurence. The endovascular management of PICA aneursysms is challenging due to anatomical difficulties in accessing the site. The rebleeding of PICA aneurysms, although rare than other intracranial anurysms, may still happen and must be considered in their management ABSTRACT Introduction Aneurysms of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) are rare clinical entities with a lower risk of rupture than other intracranial locations. This makes managing PICA aneurysms challenging and important for neurointerventionists to understand. In this case report, we looked at a rare case of PICA aneurysm with post-coiling rebleeding. Case: We reported a 51-year-old female with complaints of dizziness and vomiting. The patient was found to be hypertensive and a neurologic assessment revealed neck stiffness and left hemiparesis. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the head indicated subarachnoid hemorrhage. CT angiography (CTA) showed an aneurysm at the right proximal PICA. Although endovascular coiling was performed, the patient rebleed one month later. Following the insertion of the second coil, successful embolization was achieved, and the patient showed clinical improvement. Conclusion: PICA aneurysms require careful endovascular management, considering the difficulty of access due to their anatomical location. An understanding of its proper management is of paramount importance to reducing mortality.

In 1969 a number of Dutch university libraries and the Royal Library decided to cooperate in the field of library automation by creating a consortium for a Project for Integrated Catalogue Automation (Pica). In 1978 an online shared cataloguing system came into operation. About five years later the Pica system began to be used to produce the Dutch National Bibliography and the Dutch Union Catalogue, and to process all the cataloguing activities for over 900 public libraries. The Pica Online Retrieval System (ORS) enables users to consult bibliographic databases and catalogue information from the central Pica database. These central systems, together with local systems such as the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), the Acquisitions System combined with Serials Control, and the Circulation Control System, now constitute a ‘total library system’.

Abstract:
Abstract BACKGROUND: For some posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) aneurysms, there is no constructive endovascular or direct surgical clipping option. Intracranial bypass is an alternative to a deconstructive technique. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical features, surgical techniques, and outcome of PICA aneurysms treated with bypass and obliteration of the diseased segment. METHODS: Retrospective review of PICA aneurysms treated via intracranial bypass was performed. Outcome measurements included postoperative stroke, cranial nerve deficits, gastrostomy/tracheostomy requirement, bypass patency, modified Rankin scale (mRS) at discharge, and mRS at 6 mo. RESULTS: Seven patients with PICA aneurysms treated with intracranial bypass were identified. Five had fusiform aneurysms (4 ruptured, 1 unruptured), 1 had a giant partially thrombosed saccular aneurysm (unruptured), and 1 had a dissecting traumatic aneurysm (ruptured). Two aneurysms were at the anteromedullary segment, 4 at the lateral medullary segment, and 1 at the tonsillomedullary segment. Three patients underwent PICA-to-PICA side to side anastomoses, 2 PICA-to-PICA reanastomosis, 1 vertebral artery-to-PICA bypass, and 1 occipital artery-PICA bypass. Six out of 7 aneurysms were obliterated surgically and 1 with additional endovascular occlusion after the bypass. All bypasses were patent intraoperatively; 2 were later demonstrated occluded without radiological signs or symptoms of stroke. No patients had new cranial nerve deficit postoperatively. With the exception of 1 death due to pulmonary emboli 3 mo postoperatively, all others remain at a mRS ≤ 2. CONCLUSION: Constructive bypass and aneurysm obliteration remains a viable alternative for treatment of PICA aneurysms not amenable to direct surgical clipping or to a vessel-preserving endovascular option.

Abstract:
Magpies fly with a variable pattern of wingstroke, including high-amplitude rapid flaps and low-amplitude slower flaps with interspersed brief glides. This allowed us to test the hypothesis that if phasic coordination between respiratory and wingbeat cycles is important mechanically and energetically, then, as a bird changes its wingbeat cycle, its respiratory cycle should change with it. We also tested the strength of the drive to coordinate respiratory to locomotor cycles by stimulating breathing with 5 % CO2 during flight. We found that magpies (N=5) do shorten their breath cycle time when they shorten their wingbeat cycle time and prolong their breath cycle time when they glide. When the coordination ratio of wingbeat cycles to breaths is 3:1, the pattern of phasic coordination ensures two upstrokes per inspiration and two downstrokes per expiration. Upstroke tends to coincide with the transition into inspiration or with early inspiration and late inspiration. Downstroke tends to coincide with the transition into expiration or with early expiration and late expiration. When magpies switch from a 3:1 ratio to a 2:1 ratio of wingbeat cycles to breaths, they shorten inspiratory time to ensure that upstroke occurs through most of inspiration and downstroke corresponds to the transition into expiration. These phasic coordination patterns ensure that the compression of the airsacs during downstroke can provide a net assistance to expiration and that the expansion of the airsacs with upstroke can provide a net assistance to inspiration. The failure of an atmosphere containing 5 % CO2 to disrupt these phasic coordination patterns between respiratory and locomotory cycles suggests that there may be a potent mechanical and energetic benefit to such coordination.

Abstract:
314 Background: HIT diagnosis combines 4T scoring & HIT antibodies (HIT-Ab) testing, with confirmatory serotonin release assay (SRA). Latex immunoturbidometric assay (LIA) shows promise in quick & accurate HIT diagnosis, compared to particle immunofiltration assay (PIFA). We designed a HIT workflow & replaced PIFA with LIA at our hospital, to improve 4T usage rates & HIT diagnosis accuracy in a cost-efficient manner. Methods: In phase I, patients (pts) charts with HIT-Ab (PIFA) ordered between Mar2017-Mar2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Three investigators independently calculated 4T & reviewed PIFA/SRA results, with any alternative anticoagulation (AC) used. In phase II, a new workflow on electronic health record incorporating 4T algorithm with HIT-Ab test order was implemented. Our lab replaced PIFA with LIA. In phase II, charts for pts with LIA results from Jan-Mar 2019 were reviewed. Results: In phase I, 170 pts had PIFA results & 5 such pts (0.02%) had 4T score documented in chart. Per investigators, 113 (66.4%) pts had 4T scores. PIFA showed 60% sensitivity & 50% specificity compared to SRA. 19 pts received AC (4 pts had low 4T with negative PIFA). In phase II, 40 pts with LIA tested, 4T scoring by ordering physicians improved to 100%. Per investigators, 42.5% pts had low 4T scores. Clinicians documented high 4T in 11 pts; investigators confirmed high 4T in 2 pts. AC was used in 5 pts (4 with intermediate-high 4T per investigators) Conclusions: Our study showed that incorporation of 4T scoring in HIT algorithm significantly reduced unnecessary ordering of HIT-Ab, with 100% compliance in 4T reporting. Use of AC was consistent with the level of probability by 4T. Further clinician education can help in reduction of up scoring of 4T noted in our results. [Table: see text]

Abstract:
At the foothillof Monte Amiata volcano (southern Tuscany, Italy), small extinct lake basins of late Pleistocene age are documented. These lake basins were characterized by the deposition of two very different types of sediment: a) derived from the authigenic precipitation of iron oxides (goethite) and exploited as earth pigments; b) biogenic siliceous sediment composed of fossil diatoms and named diatomaceous earth or diatomite. The lacustrine sediments of Mount Amiata volcano were widely exploited for various applications since ancient times. Literary documents begin in the 16th century, with the descriptions of Cesalpino, Gesner, Agricola, and Imperato. Specific references to the diatomites of Monte Amiata are quoted in the 17th century by Boccone and Bonanno. The quarrying activity was described by Micheli in 1733. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the diatomaceous earths of Monte Amiata are part of the important geological collections of Micheli, Targioni Tozzetti, Baldassarri, Campani, and Tommi. A particular significance has the collection of botanic and ichthyologic fossils collected by Ezio Tongiorgi, and now preserved in the Museum of Natural History of the University of Pisa sited at the Charterhouse of Pisa in the Calci village. These paleontological samples preserve the biological and physical testimonies of the environmental and climatic changes of the late Pleistocene and are now particularly valuable because they are the only remaining evidence of the diatomaceous lacustrine deposits of the paleo-lakes of Monte Amiata. For these reasons, they represent geological materials with a fundamental cultural value.

Abstract. Little longitudinal research has addressed the question of whether the Big Five personality traits (i.e., O, C, E, A, N) predict educational outcomes and whether the Big Five provide incremental predictive validity for educational outcomes when prior achievement, intelligence, and academic self-concept are controlled for. Also, little is known about whether noncognitive factors are related to change in academic success, especially grades, after controlling for its stability. To address these research questions, we used data from the Luxembourg longitudinal extension of the 2009 cycle of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). We included data from two student cohorts that were followed across 4 years: The first cohort was in ninth grade when they participated in PISA (N = 240); the second cohort in 10th grade (N = 276). Correlational results showed that Conscientiousness and Openness were substantially related to subject-specific grades in Mathematics, French, and German across several school years. There was evidence for incremental predictive validity beyond intelligence and academic self-concepts. When controlling for the stability of grades, there were only small effects of all predictors on later grades. In summary, students’ personality (but also intelligence and academic self-concepts) predicted the stable part of grades rather than change.

Abstract BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Distal extracranial posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) aneurysms are very rare lesions and have not been previously reported in association with a Chiari type I malformation (CMI). CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old woman with a distal, low-lying, intradural-extracranial PICA aneurysm presented with a subarachnoid hemorrhage and was treated with coil embolization. The patient presented again 1 month later with symptoms of a CMI and was found to have tonsillar herniation and a large syrinx that appeared to be exacerbated by the coil mass. The patient was re-treated with a suboccipital craniectomy, C1-2 laminectomy, aneurysm trapping and excision, end-to-end PICA anastomosis, and expansile duraplasty. CONCLUSION: Although just a single case, important teaching points regarding the angiographic appearance of a CMI and treatment options for distal PICA aneurysms that are situated below the foramen magnum can be learned. A low-lying caudal PICA loop should trigger a workup for a CMI. Caution should be taken when using coil embolization for aneurysms in the high cervical spinal canal. Bypass with aneurysm trapping and excision may be a superior treatment option in these cases because the posterior fossa and high cervical canal can be concomitantly decompressed. To our knowledge, this is the only case reported of a distal intradural-extracranial PICA aneurysm associated with a CMI.

Abstract OBJECTIVE This is the first report of a ruptured aneurysm involving a collateral branch to the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) in a patient who had a subarachnoid hemorrhage. CLINICAL PRESENTATION A 56-year-old man initially presented with a subarachnoid hemorrhage and underwent 2 catheter-based 4-vessel angiograms with negative results. A delayed angiogram 4 weeks later revealed a dissecting aneurysm of the posterior meningeal artery, a branch of the vertebral artery. INTERVENTION A 3-dimensional reconstruction of the vertebral angiogram showed proximal occlusion of the proximal left PICA and distal filling via a collateral branch from the posterior meningeal artery. A far-lateral approach was used for this patient. The aneurysm was found along the course of the collateral posterior meningeal artery and was clipped successfully. CONCLUSION Aneurysms involving collateral branches of the PICA are rare. It is important to recognize such collateral flow preoperatively because inadvertent sacrifice of these vessels during a surgical approach could lead to stroke and neurological deficits of the PICA territory.

A perfused, isolated rat liver system was therefore established which could be given a single pass dose of pIgA; a variety of tests showed such livers remained viable for at least 3 h and could be subsequently fractionated on Ficoll and Nycodenz gradients with normal distributions of marker enzymes. 2. Subcellular fractionation at different times after a single pass dose of pIgA showed that whilst pIgA appeared sequentially in sinusoidal plasma membrane, light endosomes, dense endosomes, very dense endosomes and lysosomes as in vivo, the predominance of pIgA in the light endosome compartment disappeared much earlier than after injection in vivo of pIgA, presumably because this compartment was not being continuously loaded over the first 10-15 min. The time course of appearance of label in bile was unchanged. A large excess of unlabelled asialofetuin did not change these patterns, indicating that the asialoglycoprotein receptor was not involved. 3. Low doses of the microtubule agent colchicine reduced the proportion of pIgA reaching the bile, but subcellular fractionation of treated liver showed that distribution of label amongst liver fractions was little changed, although the overall liver pIgA content had increased. This would suggest that pIgA did not remain in the common compartment which could have supplied bile or lysosomes but rather flowed out of it as rapidly as in untreated liver but towards those compartments supplying the lysosomes. 4. Experiments with nocodazole, which reversibly disrupts microtubules, showed that very little of the pIgA taken into an inhibited liver appeared in the bile after nocodazole was removed 30 min later, even though a second dose of pIgA, given after nocodazole removal, appeared in bile with a normal time course. The first dose of pIgA must therefore have passed beyond the compartments competent to supply the bile before nocodazole was removed. Such compartments were undamaged since the second dose of pIgA appeared in bile normally. We therefore conclude that the bulk of pIgA must be supplied to the bile from light or dense endosomes rather than from very dense endosomes and lysosomes.

Abstract:
AbstractReevaluation of Quaternary sites of fossil pika (Ochotona) lends no support for the inference that Nearctic pikas were not restricted to rocky habitat. The saxicolous nature of all widespread, isolated populations of extant Nearctic pikas and their closest Palearctic sister taxa support consideration of O. princeps, and perhaps all Nearctic Quaternary Ochotona , as indicators of cool, mesic, rocky situations. As indicators of rocky microhabitat, fossil remains of O. princeps do not require that the entire region was cool and mesic, but only that suitable rocky microhabitat existed in the vicinity. Use of fossil pika dung alone as indicative of pikas in the immediate community is suspect, as the small, round, and buoyant pellets may be transported downslope by hydraulic flushing of talus habitat. Current local elevational lower limits (E) of appropriate habitat for paleoecological reconstruction at extralimital fossil sites are predicted by the equation: E(m) = 14087 - (56.6)°N - (82.9)°W.

Abstract:
Microfacies analysis and depositional environment of the Pila Spi Formation (Middle-Late Eocene) were studied in the Nerwa outcrop, Berat anticline, High Folded Zone in Iraqi Kurdistan Region. The total thickness of the formation is 13.5 m composed of medium to thick bedded yellow to white limestone and thick bedded grey to white dolomitic limestone. It is interbedded with thin beds of yellow marl in the lower part and have chert nodules in the upper part. The petrographic study of 17 thin sections of the Pila Spi carbonate showed that the majority of the carbonates are micritic mixed with some microspar. The skeletal grains involve benthonic foraminifera, ostracods, mollusca, dasycladacean green algae, pelecypods, gastropods, rare planktonic foraminifera and bioclasts. Non skeletal grain included peloids, intraclasts and extraclasts which is mainly monocrystalline quartz grain. Based on field observations and petrographic analysis, three different lithological units were distinguished in the Pila Spi Formation in the studied section. They are in ascending order: medium to thick bedded limestone interbedded with marl unit, thick bedded dolomitic limestone unit and, cherty limestone unit. Depending on detailed microfacies analysis of carbonate rocks, three main microfacies and twelve submicrofacies were recognized in the studied section of the Pila Spi Formation. From the sum of all petrographic, facies and textural analyses, it is here concluded that Pila Spi Formation in the Nerwa section was deposited at subtidal semi-restricted lagoon, in lower part gradually changed to open lagoon environment toward the upper part.

Abstract:
We have used temperature and nocodazole blocks in an in vivo basolateral to apical transcytosis assay to dissociate the early transcytotic steps occurring during the formation of transcytotic vesicles and their microtubule-dependent translocation into the apical region, from the late steps when transcytotic cargo is delivered into the apical media. We found that polarized MDCK cells transfected with rabbit polymeric IgA receptor (pIgA-R) internalize basolaterally added pIgA-R ligand ([Fab]2 fragment of IgG against the receptor's ectodomain) at 17 degrees C but do not deliver it to the apical PM. Instead, the ligand accumulates in an apically localized transcytotic compartment, distal to the basolateral endosome and the microtubule-requiring translocation step. We have characterized this compartment and show that it is distinct from basolateral transferrin recycling endosomes, basolateral early endosomes or late endosomes or lysosomes. The apical transcytotic compartment colocalizes with the compartment containing apically recycling membrane markers (ricin and apically internalized pIgA-R ligand) but is distinct from the compartment receiving apically internalized fluid phase marker (BSA). This compartment is an intermediate station of the overall pathway since transcytotic ligand can exit the compartment and be released into the apical medium when cells preloaded at 17 degrees C are subsequently incubated at 37 degrees C. We have used this system to examine the effect of Brefeldin A (BFA) and the involvement of trimeric GTPases in the late (post apical transcytotic compartment) steps of the transcytotic pathway. We found that addition of BFA or cholera toxin, a known activator of Gs alpha, to cells preloaded with transcytotic ligand at 17 degrees C significantly inhibits the exit of ligand from the apical transcytotic compartment. General structure and function of the apical endosome are not affected since neither BFA nor cholera toxin inhibit the recycling of apically internalized membrane markers (ricin and pIgA-R ligand) from the same compartment. The data suggest that transcytosis connects the "membrane-sorting" sub-domain of the basolateral endosome with a homologous sub-domain of the apical endosome and that exit of transcytosing cargo from the apical endosome is controlled by a BFA and trimeric G protein sensitive mechanism, distinct from that used for recycling of apically internalized proteins (ricin or pIgA-R).

Abstract:
Kingston Saltpeter Cave, Bartow County, Georgia, has produced late Quaternary fossils of 38 taxa of birds. The presence of extinct species of mammals, and three radiocarbon dates on mammalian bone collagen ranging from approximately 15,000 to 12,000 Cal B.P., indicate a late Pleistocene age for this fauna, although a small portion of the fossils may be Holocene in age. The birds are dominated by forest or woodland species, especially the Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus) and Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius). Species indicative of brushy or edge habitats, wetlands, and grasslands also are present. They include the Greater Prairie Chicken (Tympanuchus cupido, a grassland indicator) and Black-billed Magpie (Pica pica, characteristic of woody edges bordering grasslands). Both of these species reside today no closer than 1000+ km to the west (mainly northwest) of Georgia. An enigmatic owl, perhaps extinct and undescribed, is represented by two juvenile tarsometatarsi. The avifauna of Kingston Saltpeter Cave suggests that deciduous or mixed deciduous/coniferous forests and woodlands were the dominant habitats in the late Pleistocene of southernmost Appalachia, with wetlands and grasslands present as well.

Abstract:
The Società Malacologica Italiana was established in Pisa in 1874 to promote the study of extant and fossil molluscs in Italy through publications, meetings and other activities. During its life, the society had 120 members (including four institutions) and published a journal, Bullettino della Società Malacologica Italiana. Between 1875 and 1899, 20 volumes were issued: papers mostly concerned Italian malacofauna. After almost 30 years this research line seemed to have dried up, and without generational turnover, the society dissolved between the end of 1906 and early 1907. A detailed survey of the organization, activities and membership provides an interesting picture of a malacological society in the late 1800s.

Abstract:
In the framework of measures required for the Europe 2020 strategy – and with regard to the prevention of early school leaving based on frequentist definition of probability and multilevel logistic regression model, we identify the risk groups of grade retention. PISA 2012 data analysis suggests that early retention is a strong predictor of late retention and that the probability of early retention is 35 times higher in the first tenth of the distribution of the students’ socioeconomic status in comparison with the top tenth. The odds ratio calculated using the multilevel logistic model indicates that male students are on average 1.7 times more likely to be retained than female students; for each additional unit of standard deviation in the socioeconomic status of the student, the odds ratio of non-retention increases 1.5 times, and four times per unit of school socio-economic composition. With regard to mathematics self-concept, for each additional unit of standard deviation, the odds ratio of non-retention increases 1.5 times. Bearing in mind the international debate on the long-term effect of grade retention on individual careers, and knowing that Portugal is among the OECD countries with the highest degree of inequality in income distribution, the interpretation of the results recommends the design, planning and implementation of intervention programs aimed at improving the learning in risk groups, with the 1st and 2nd cycles of basic education as priorities.
