Chan, Lok Shun Apple. "Optimisation of piping network design for district cooling system." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/4109.

Full text
Abstract:
A district cooling system (DeS) is a.scheme for centralised cooling energy distribution which takes advantage of economies of scale and load diversity. . A cooling medium (chilled water) is generated at a central refrigeration plant and then supplied to a district area, comprising multiple buildings, through a closed-loop piping circuit. Because of the substantial capital investment involved, an optimal design of the distribution piping . configuration is one of the crucial factors for successful implementation of a district 1'. cooling scheme. Since there. exists an enormous number of different combinations of the piping configuration, it is not feasible to evaluate each individual case using an exhaustive approach. This thesis exammes the problem of determining an optimal distribution piping configuration using a genetic algorithm (GA). In order to estimate the spatial and temporal distribution of cooling loads; the climatic conditions of Hong Kong were investigated and a weather database in the form of a typical meteorological year (TMY) was developed. Detailed thermal modelling of a number of prototypical buildings was carried out to determine benchmark cooling loads. A novel Local Search/Looped Local Search algorithm was developed for finding optimal/near-optimal distribution piping configurations. By means of computational . experiments, it was demonstrated that there is a promising improvement to GA performance by including the Local Search/Looped Local Search algorithm, in terms of both solution quality and computational efficiency. The effects on the search performance of a number of parameters were systematically investigated to establish the most effective settings. In order to illustrate the effectiveness of the Local Search/Looped Local Search algorithm, a benchmark problem - the optimal communication, spanning tree (OCST) was used for comparison. The results showed that the Looped Local Search method developed in this work was an effective tool for optimal network design of the distribution piping system in DCS, as well as for optimising the OCST problem.

Abstract:
This thesis covers a degree project for a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering degree and is written on behalf of Valmet AB. The purpose of the project is to evaluate and analyse the differences between CATIA and E3D and conclude which of the software is most suitable for on-machine tubing and piping design at Valmet. The tubing and piping modules in CATIA are currently used but is considered somewhat ineffective. E3D is also used at Valmet but in another branch of engineering design, namely field pipe engineering. The analysis is done using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) which is a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methodology developed to aid in complex decision-making problems. The methodology follows a six-step process which results in a prioritized ranking or relative weight of both alternatives with respect to the established criteria and sub-criteria for selection. A total of four main criteria and 12 sub-criteria for the selection of the most suitable CAD system were identified and analysed with the help of relevant personnel in various departments such as engineering, purchasing and management The results of the project conclude that E3D is the preferred CAD system for on-machine tubing and piping at Valmet with regards to the given criteria and sub-criteria. The criteria that favoured E3D most were the availability of the systems, meaning the possibility that Valmet can outsource projects to consultants, as well as the more effective 3D modelling process. However, the results are not heavily one-sided which suggest that more research should be done before a final decision can be taken. The suggested further research includes looking at the in-direct implications of using a new CAD system such as computer updates and the usage of a new PLM system. Moreover, the actual performance of 3D modelling using the two systems is beyond the scope of this thesis and would have to be further researched in another thesis or a pilot case.

The main concern of this work is with the application of the modal spectral seismic analysis to secondary structural systems of nuclear power plants, with the large amount of conservatism which is included in them, and, of course, with the consequences to the particular case of the plants under construction in Brazil. One considers the design analysis methods which have been used so far in Brazil, as well as the most recent developments in the area, in USA and in Europe, to conclude about the adequacy of those procedures and recommend eventual changes to them. One then studies the subjects of the coupling effect between the primary and secondary system responses, the influence of the piping support relative displacements, the contribution of the cross-correlation among response modal components and the participation in the overall response of the so-called rigid modes. The main computer program aid is taken from an ANSYS-2 version and one uses a reduced model of a piping system as the secondary system and a 3-D beam element model of a reactor building as the primary system. The spectral analysis results are compared to time domain solutions using the same structural models excited by a design accelerogram. Conclusions and recommendations are oriented to the present design practice in Brazil.

While it is critical that nuclear plants frequently inspect their facilities for cracking, corrosion or other failure modes, humans cannot safely perform these tasks due to the hazardous conditions within the tanks and piping systems. In response, the d'Arbeloff Laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering department is designing a compact submersible robot that is capable of precise navigation and maneuvering in order to detect defects within water filled piping systems. The robot is spheroidal with a smooth surface and no external appendages. It propels itself with centrifugal pumps which suck in water from the environment, and pump it out in various directions. This thesis covers the design and implementation of the software, electrical, and a few mechanical systems of the robot. Specifically, it details the programming techniques for the microcontroller and graphical user interface code, circuit board design, wiring, and waterproofing. A robot prototype was built, and experiments have given useful data to construct a model to supplement the field of underwater robotic design.

Abstract:
Embedded systems are becoming ubiquitous, primarily due to the fast evolution of digital electronic devices. The design of modern embedded systems requires systems to exhibit, high performance and reliability, yet have short design time and low cost. Application Specific Instruction set processors (ASIPs) are widely used in embedded system since they are economical to use, flexible, and reusable (thus saves design time). During the last decade research work on ASIPs have been carried out in mainly for single pipelined processors. Improving performance in processors is possible by exploring the available parallelism in the program. Designing of multiple parallel execution paths for parallel execution of the processor naturally incurs additional cost. The methodology presented in this dissertation has addressed the problem of improving performance in ASIPs, at minimal additional cost. The devised methodology explores the available parallelism of an application to generate a multi-pipeline heterogeneous ASIP. The processor design is application specific. No pre-defined IPs are used in the design. The generated processor contains multiple standalone pipelined data paths, which are not necessarily identical, and are connected by the necessary bypass paths and control signals. Control unit are separate for each pipeline (though with the same clock) resulting in a simple and cost effective design. By using separate instruction and data memories (Harvard architecture) and by allowing memory access by two separate pipes, the complexity of the controller and buses are reduced. The impact of higher memory latencies is nullified by utilizing parallel pipes during memory access. Efficient bypass network selection and encoding techniques provide a better implementation. The initial design approach with only two pipelines without bypass paths show speed improvements of up to 36% and switching activity reductions of up to 11%. The additional area costs around 16%. An improved design with different number of pipelines (more than two) based on applications show on average of 77% performance improvement with overheads of: 49% on area; 51% on leakage power; 17% on switching activity; and 69% on code size. The design was further trimmed, with bypass path selection and encoding techniques, which show a saving of up to 32% of area and 34% of leakage power with 6% performance improvement and 69% of code size reduction compared to the design approach without these techniques in the multi pipeline design.

The thesis is focused on an analysis of mounting and cable laying fiber optic lines. The first chapter includes an analysis is made comparing parameters fiber and copper cabling, mainly in terms of access networks. This part specifies the various transmission media and access networks that are operated on them. Attention is focused on the transmission rate and its possible impact, provided the capacity and other important values. This section also demands site maintenance, service, or any failure on the routes of these networks. With this goal in the second chapter was created several designs networks that provide insight into possible solutions to the situation for emerging networks, and for upgrading existing networks, using both management and elements of optical and copper, or combinations thereof. Provide information from expert sources and verified directs the work of the future and to clarify further the eventual development of individual technologies. Most other space and offers the potential of optical technology, nature, and therefore the third chapter is fully devoted to only the transmission medium. At the beginning of this section is a theoretical analysis of possible ways of cable laying fiber optic cabling with a comparison of advantages and disadvantages. The most stable is an underground installation, which is costly in standard cases. As a result of these factors proved to be a possible solution using the underground installation of water pipeline shutdown. Therefore, the optical path designed, organized and implemented laying of fiber optic cable. By completing the inspection measurement and evaluation of the cost compared with other ways of installing fiber optic cable.

McAllister, Catherine. "The Effects of Recreational Trail Design and Management Decisions on Northern Leopard Frog (Rana pipiens) Populations in an Urban Park." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/2901.

Full text
Abstract:
In addition to their original purpose as recreational areas, urban parks provide important habitats for species living in urban settings. Reconciling recreational and environmental goals is problematic, especially for park planners. RIM Park, in Waterloo, Ontario, is an example of this attempted reconciliation, where planners and managers attempted to conserve herpetofauna in a provincially significant wetland. However, this area includes a paved nature trail used by hikers, in-line skaters and cyclists and is adjacent to a golf course (which lies within the boundaries of the park). Herpetofauna breeding ponds were constructed and a series of culverts and clearspans included in order to provide reptiles and amphibians with safe passage under the trails. My objective was to determine whether these measures have been effective, whether the park sustains a viable population of Northern Leopard Frogs, and what factors influence frog populations in the park. Two spring field seasons involving mark and recapture techniques were attempted to estimate population sizes of Northern Leopard Frogs at RIM Park, as well as control sites. In both seasons, a control site was a cedar swamp 14 km to the west of the park within an Environmentally Sensitive Policy Area in Waterloo city limits affected by housing development and shared trails. Also within Waterloo city limits, a storm water management pond 8 km to the west was added in field season two. In 2005 (field season 1), because there was a serious drought almost no Northern Leopard Frogs were captured at the two sites examined ? RIM Park and the cedar swamp. In 2006, the more "normal" weather conditions revealed that RIM Park had significantly fewer Northern Leopard Frogs than either of the control sites. Given the lack of data in year 1, I compared the 2006 results to seven years of monitoring reports on RIM Park from consultants. The 2006 data were consistent with previous reports of small Northern Leopard Frog populations at RIM Park. Mark and recapture sessions revealed relatively low numbers, with a catch average of 4. 33 (SD = 1. 15). Calculations revealed an estimated population of 23 (SE = 13. 42). The highest number of observed Northern Leopard Frogs ever recorded at the same location in consulting reports is 5. It is likely that the ponds at RIM Park do not support breeding in Northern Leopard Frogs as the only adults caught were late in the season, during the last week of May, and adults likely were transients from the nearby wetlands and uplands. It is possible, given the historical monitoring data, that the Northern Leopard Frogs were long absent from RIM Park because of intensive farming activities that had replaced the wetlands, and that construction of the golf course and trails further precluded colonization. The lack of adult frogs in the breeding ponds and the lack of dead or injured frogs on the trails or golf course support the hypothesis that the trails are not presently causing frog mortality. It is possible that the frogs are avoiding recolonizing the trail and golf course area. It is also likely that the breeding ponds need to be deepened and only then will it be apparent whether the frogs will colonize the ponds, lay eggs, and use the clearspans and culverts. Recommendations include a shift in priorities to put the emphasis on restoration, a discussion of restoration options (including a possible restoration plan), possible improvements in amphibian monitoring techniques (such as reducing the reliance on audio methods), and general suggestions for urban park planning and management.

Abstract This paper is to design and analyze the pipe system for fluid transfer. By using paint circulation system in automotive paint shop as the example, we can analyze the pressure and flow volume of multi-outlet piping network. Base on the law of the conservation of mass, the law of the conservation of energy and Dracy Weisbach Formula. We calculate the friction and pressure loss caused by pipe material and accessory. In further, we develop software to design and analyze the pipe network of paint circulation system. We design and establish the software of piping system to check which are different between reality and simulation. After adjust influence factor, the software get modify numbers to match user requirement. According to the experience, we find dynamic loss from pipe accessory is the key factor to affect flow volume and pressure. The reason is construction quality varied. Therefore, the construction quality must be controlled properly to make sure fluid transfer uniformly.

Piping system design mainly divides calculating head loss of conduits between choosing motive power. This study use hypothetical fuel supply system to proceed to the flow rate experiment, to estimate unknown flow rate of circuit by iteration, and to simulate the piping system by HyPneu. We compare to experimentation, estimation, and simulation each other, and we analysis the relationship of every conduit design methods to know the discrepancy piping design by software between real situation. We can understand to the result of piping system simulating by software is close to the one of circuit iteration and has just a little difference to the one of experiment, and we can get important reference basis of piping design. On the other hand, we use pump characteristic curve and system impendence curve to solve working point of the smallest pump efficiency. We discuss the efficiency of pump parallel connection to obtain the parameter of piping system design, too.

With the rise of the BRIC countries, the Third World countries’ economic capability has growth substantially, and so has their demand on energy and petrochemical products. This prompted an increased scale of global investment into the energy and petrochemical industries. However, the increase in oil and raw material costs often makes proprietors favor turnkey projects to shorten construction time and maximize profit. This study differs from previous approaches where cost and quality were the main focuses, and aims to improve from the piping engineering design, which has core importance in the design stage. A good piping engineering design can usually enhance a plant’s design quality and reduce costs. Hence, this study uses Grey Relational Analysis of Multiple Attribute Decision Making coupled with expert questionnaire to evaluate the three sets of existing 3D design software (PDS, PDMS, SP3D). This study aims to find the most cost and human resource efficient solution for a smooth construction planning that also provide the best design quality under the lowest cost. The study result shows that PDMS is more suitable for the above purposes than the other two sets of 3D design software, and the conclusion of this study should provide an important reference for decision makers.

This thesis addresses on the development of a computer-aided design software package for gas piping design. Different from traditional sketching methods, this package provides a friendly human-machine interface such that users can generate gas piping layouts through the pick and place function of a digitizer. As results, junior engineers can easily handle numerous different piping components and accurately complete his design work in a short time. In addition, the software menu includes a useful statistical function. Execution of that function will generate bills of materials and provides an estimation of labor hours required. With the help of computer tools, possible human mistakes can be significantly decreased. With the parameters provided by users, the system is also able to count associated miscellaneous components, which are not drawn on the layout, such as tapes, washers and bolts. For security reasons, the software codes include a password identification subroutine to protect system data as well as user''s drawings.

A pipe route design automation method, called Pipe Trunk Based Pipe Routing Design Method (PTR Method), has been developed to allow new pipes to pass through pipe trunks and connect a pair of source and destination points specified by engineers in the engine room piping system design processes of a ship. In the PTR Method, a pipe trunk is defined by a line segment with high-bound and low-bound width limits. A spatial, breadth-first search method has been developed to search the pipe trunk paths connecting a pair of source and destination pipe trunks. Pipe sliders are used to book-keeping the existing and new pipes in pipe trunks. Edge-Operators have been developed to determine the geometry of the pipes connecting pipe trunks following shipyard’s pipe design standards. The PDMS input files of the new pipe routes can be generated automatically, and the CAD solid models of the new pipe routes can be added to the engine room model for engineers to select preferred routes. The application of the PTR Method is for most engine room spaces except the main floor where most pipes are not in pipe trunks. The advantages of using PTR Method include (1) forcing the engine room pipes to be arranged in predefined pipe trunks, (2) generating the CAD solid models of the pipes automatically, (3) reducing the chance to have pipes interfere with other entities, and (4) pipe routes searched are independent of the arrangement of manufacturing blocks of the ship.

Sufficient money and manpower have been playing a crucial role in executing a large-scale turnkey project. The phases of this kind of project include preliminary feasibility study, initial planning, detail design, procurement & outsourcing, construction, testing & commissioning, and final completion, which usually take several years to complete. However, many turnkey projects encounter some problems in the construction phase, such as interface integration, design change, constructability and so on. And the poor design and planning always result in these problems, and it will eventually lead to a serious project delay and budget increased. Therefore, design quality in every aspect will have significant impact on the success of the project. Hence, this study selects the piping engineering design task, which has the most interface integrations and is the most complicated in the petrochemical plant construction project, as the research subject. First of all, this study develops the criterions for measuring piping engineering quality by literature review and expert interview. Then, questionnaire method is used to gather opinions of the respondents in order to determine the influence factors of piping engineering design quality. There are twenty-eight evaluation criterions in four dimensions developed in this study. In addition, this study also points out the opinions of questionnaire respondents which include people from piping design unit, project sponsors, and contractors. Hopefully, the result of this study can be helpful for measuring the quality in piping engineering design.

The sprinkler water release pressure affects its water release capacity and the pipe diameter, flow velocity and the supply of water release capacity of sprinkler determine the friction loss of this pipe section. When the sprinkling pipe system is calculated layer by layer and zone by zone, the water release pressure of sprinkler is often used as the initial value of mathematical calculation to gain the solution; in combination with the different pipe section directions, the friction loss and potential-energy difference are calculated to gain the pressure value of each node. For each node, finite difference method is applied to determine pressure value and then the convergency value of iterative computation is gained through repeated calculation. In order to save the time consumed by repeated mathematical calculation, this research systematically compared iterative programmed hydraulic calculation tool of AUTOCAD secondary development and the calculation standard of friction loss according to the calculation result of Hazen-Williams formula. After confirming the iterative programmed instrumental validity and its applicability to the topic of this research, the case study was conducted against the overground 7-story buildings. The case study results show that after iterative hydraulic calculation program is used to calculate and adjust the pipe layer by layer and zone by zone, about 33,425 kg steel can be saved and 39,442 kg carbon dioxide emissions are reduced and the reduction rate is 24.35%. In terms of sprinkling system, when the iterative calculation method is adopted to conduct hydraulic calculation and the review that layer by layer and zone by zone, it is possible to reduce usage amount of steel, lower the pipe materials and the cost of pipe fitting and lessen the demand for construction and operation space as well as the carbon dioxide emissions. To be specific, the application of iterative programmed calculation tool has the positive effect of the sprinkling pipe system design on its safety, economy and environmental protection.

In general, water drainage system can be divided into two categories: bright pipe and subsurface pipe. The subsurface pipe also can be divided into buried pipe and non-buried pipe according to whether it is buried in the structure or not. At the beginning of the townhouse designing, maintenance issues were often not considered in depth. When the subsurface pipe is damaged, it is hard to find out the problem clearly, causing maintenance problems. When the renewal and reconstruction of bathroom with open piping system. It will be more convenient for the maintenance, the renewal or the change of the layout of the pipeline in the future. After completion, its drainage pipes can be fully updated. In the maintenance and renewal project, only the cost of the material for the pipe is required. There is no need to destroy the structure during the construction period. It also reduces engineering difficulties and maintenance waste. Therefore, in terms of sustainability, economy, safety, and construction. It is best to choose open piping system.

The most complicated part of pipeline arrangement in ship is the connection between equipments in engine room. It has been the main development in the research of shipbuilding technique that how to achieve automatically, time-saving, and material saving but according to ship’s rules at the finite space in the field of current shipbuilding industry. But the personnel's dynamic space design in ship’s engine room is taken gradually when the Human Factors became important in the modern industry. This research is considering the operability of equipment in ship’s engine room as quantifiable constraint on the design of pipeline arrangement, and takes care of each kind of shipbuilding rules, to develop a pipeline design system with theory and practicability by the software applications of GeneHunter and PDMS. The system can achieve balance between cost and Human Factors, and calculates the optimization of pipeline arrangement. The basic structure of this thesis is: It used the 3D charting software (PDMS) as the main interface, and developing a module which can judge the virtual space for equipment operation. The intention of this module is putting the consideration of equipment operability in a piping route design, and the module can create equipment’s data for restrictive constraints and quantifiable constraints in pipeline design. Because the pipeline optimization design belongs to the generalized optimization principle, it is unable to determine the characteristic of fitness function. Therefore this research selected genetic algorithm that can satisfy above-mentioned constraints, and the advantage of this algorithm is that can simultaneous search different points and concern about many details for pipeline arrangement by penalty functions.

Maharaj, Ashveer. "A comparative study on the effects of internal vs external pressure for a pressure vessel subjected to piping loads at the shell-to-nozzle junction." Thesis, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/4984.

Full text
Abstract:
This investigation seeks to perform a comparative study between the combined effects of internal pressure and piping loads versus external pressure and piping loads on a pressure vessel. There are currently several well-known and widely-used procedures for predicting the stress situation and the structural stability of pressure vessels under internal pressure when external piping loads (due to thermal expansion, weight, pressure, etc.) are applied at the nozzles. This project familiarises one with several international pressure vessel design Codes and standards, including AS ME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) pressure vessel code sections and WRC (Welding Research Council) bulletins. It has been found that many vessels are designed to operate under normal or steam-out conditions (in vacuum). The combined effect of the external atmospheric pressure and the piping loads at the nozzle could be catastrophic if not addressed properly - especially when the stability of the structure is a crucial consideration, i.e. when buckling is a concern. The above-mentioned codes and standards do not directly address procedures or provide acceptance criteria for external loads during vacuum conditions. The approach to the study was, firstly, to investigate the effects of internal pressure and piping loads at the shell-to-nozzle junction. Theoretical stresses were compared with Finite Element results generated using the software package MSC PATRAN. Finite Element Methods provide a more realistic approach to the design of pressure vessels as compared to theoretical methods. It was necessary to determine if the theoretical procedures currently used were adequate in predicting the structural situation of a pressure vessel. Secondly, the buckling effects of vessels subjected to external atmospheric pressure and piping loads were also investigated. Buckling of the shell-to-nozzle region was explored with the aid of Finite Element software. The results gained were used to develop appropriate procedures for the design of vessels under external atmospheric pressure and piping loads. The design is such that it indicates if buckling will occur at the shell-to-nozzle junction. These design procedures form the basis for future exploration in this regard.

Taiwan is situated at the circum-Pacific seismic belt, as one of the areas of most frequent sensible earthquakes in the world. According to the statistics from Central Weather Bureau, Taiwan is on average experiences thousands of earthquakes every year and specifically, hundreds of sensible ones. Once a large-scale earthquake occurs in a metropolitan area, it will result in a large amount of cracked ground, broken bridges, collapsed buildings, ruptured life lines and injured victims waiting for emergency medical treatments. Right after a major earthquake, there usually accompanied secondary disasters such as tsunamis, landslides and post earthquake fires. The casualties and property losses sometimes are more serious than the first impact of the natural hazard itself. Hence, it comes to be an important issue for disaster relief after major earthquakes to prevent the secondary mishap such as post earthquake fires and thus to reduce the damage and casualties from the calamities. Since the installation of fire safety is not a part of a building structure and the seismic building design code does not include fire water pipings, the design of them in Taiwan does usually not consider the seismic effect. This study first collected and summarized the relevant seismic design codes and fire control standards from U.S., Japan, China and Taiwan to understand the internationally adopted methods for seismic from designs of fire water pipings. This study also gathered engineering cases and photographs of the installation of the shock resistance hangers of fire water pipings in high technology factory buildings. Then, this study presented a proposal for seismic design principles. we hope this can attract attentions from government authorities and the fire safety business sector and to rise concerns of the seismic design of fire safety installation; and therefore set up a clear and practical criterion for the engineers and finally reduce the damage of post earthquake fires.
