Abstract:
The piping design should be considered by way of the network system in order to supply water for reliable fire extinguishing. However, the pipe scheduling method in line by the National Fire Safety Code is typically applied. When the modeling analysis method of fluid behavior is utilized based on the piping network theory, the fire-extinguishing water can be supplied more stably in a large-scale plant. Because a piping network consists of a large number of node points as well as consumes a lot of time and effort, it is recommended to use the commercial analysis program according to international standards. In this study, we used a piping network analysis program, sisHYD, which can model the actual piping according to the coordinates and analyze the fluid behavior inside the piping. As a result of the piping network analysis, it was possible to reduce the diameter of piping while ensuring the supply stability of firefighting water compared to the pipe scheduling method. Consequently, the value engineering effect of a construction project can be enhanced by reducing the wasted budget and inefficient factors.

Abstract:
In chemical, petrochemical and Oil and Gas industry, few decades back Modularization concept was executed for remote site location, extreme climatic conditions but now a days Modularization concept is becoming popular and extensively utilized irrespective to site location and climatic conditions because of its potential to reduce schedule, minimizing cost, effective utilization of skilled labor, for better quality with maximum safe environment, reduction in space requirements for plant layouts and reduction in installation cost. This paper will discuss Modularization design approaches, Consideration for Modularization layouts, consideration of piping design for optimization of modularization project. During modularization, size, weight and the center of Gravity (COG) of the module play’s important role for finalizing layouts and piping with in module, still constructability, Equipment sizing, equipment layout and piping design are critical factors in modularization. Successful execution of modularization highly depends on the modularization design approach hence the factor stated in paper will help EPC contractors for optimization of construction by eliminating later changes in design which will be further reduction in cost and schedule impact. In general construction schedule is largely impacted by piping installation and the cost is increased by rework, which reduces certainty on cost and schedule, the piping design and layout consideration stated in this paper will help construction to minimize on schedule and cost, by eliminating the rework done on the field.

Chan, Lok Shun Apple. "Optimisation of piping network design for district cooling system." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/4109.

Full text
Abstract:
A district cooling system (DeS) is a.scheme for centralised cooling energy distribution which takes advantage of economies of scale and load diversity. . A cooling medium (chilled water) is generated at a central refrigeration plant and then supplied to a district area, comprising multiple buildings, through a closed-loop piping circuit. Because of the substantial capital investment involved, an optimal design of the distribution piping . configuration is one of the crucial factors for successful implementation of a district 1'. cooling scheme. Since there. exists an enormous number of different combinations of the piping configuration, it is not feasible to evaluate each individual case using an exhaustive approach. This thesis exammes the problem of determining an optimal distribution piping configuration using a genetic algorithm (GA). In order to estimate the spatial and temporal distribution of cooling loads; the climatic conditions of Hong Kong were investigated and a weather database in the form of a typical meteorological year (TMY) was developed. Detailed thermal modelling of a number of prototypical buildings was carried out to determine benchmark cooling loads. A novel Local Search/Looped Local Search algorithm was developed for finding optimal/near-optimal distribution piping configurations. By means of computational . experiments, it was demonstrated that there is a promising improvement to GA performance by including the Local Search/Looped Local Search algorithm, in terms of both solution quality and computational efficiency. The effects on the search performance of a number of parameters were systematically investigated to establish the most effective settings. In order to illustrate the effectiveness of the Local Search/Looped Local Search algorithm, a benchmark problem - the optimal communication, spanning tree (OCST) was used for comparison. The results showed that the Looped Local Search method developed in this work was an effective tool for optimal network design of the distribution piping system in DCS, as well as for optimising the OCST problem.

Abstract:
This thesis covers a degree project for a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering degree and is written on behalf of Valmet AB. The purpose of the project is to evaluate and analyse the differences between CATIA and E3D and conclude which of the software is most suitable for on-machine tubing and piping design at Valmet. The tubing and piping modules in CATIA are currently used but is considered somewhat ineffective. E3D is also used at Valmet but in another branch of engineering design, namely field pipe engineering. The analysis is done using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) which is a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methodology developed to aid in complex decision-making problems. The methodology follows a six-step process which results in a prioritized ranking or relative weight of both alternatives with respect to the established criteria and sub-criteria for selection. A total of four main criteria and 12 sub-criteria for the selection of the most suitable CAD system were identified and analysed with the help of relevant personnel in various departments such as engineering, purchasing and management The results of the project conclude that E3D is the preferred CAD system for on-machine tubing and piping at Valmet with regards to the given criteria and sub-criteria. The criteria that favoured E3D most were the availability of the systems, meaning the possibility that Valmet can outsource projects to consultants, as well as the more effective 3D modelling process. However, the results are not heavily one-sided which suggest that more research should be done before a final decision can be taken. The suggested further research includes looking at the in-direct implications of using a new CAD system such as computer updates and the usage of a new PLM system. Moreover, the actual performance of 3D modelling using the two systems is beyond the scope of this thesis and would have to be further researched in another thesis or a pilot case.

COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR
NUCLEN S.A.
The main concern of this work is with the application of the modal spectral seismic analysis to secondary structural systems of nuclear power plants, with the large amount of conservatism which is included in them, and, of course, with the consequences to the particular case of the plants under construction in Brazil. One considers the design analysis methods which have been used so far in Brazil, as well as the most recent developments in the area, in USA and in Europe, to conclude about the adequacy of those procedures and recommend eventual changes to them. One then studies the subjects of the coupling effect between the primary and secondary system responses, the influence of the piping support relative displacements, the contribution of the cross-correlation among response modal components and the participation in the overall response of the so-called rigid modes. The main computer program aid is taken from an ANSYS-2 version and one uses a reduced model of a piping system as the secondary system and a 3-D beam element model of a reactor building as the primary system. The spectral analysis results are compared to time domain solutions using the same structural models excited by a design accelerogram. Conclusions and recommendations are oriented to the present design practice in Brazil.

While it is critical that nuclear plants frequently inspect their facilities for cracking, corrosion or other failure modes, humans cannot safely perform these tasks due to the hazardous conditions within the tanks and piping systems. In response, the d'Arbeloff Laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering department is designing a compact submersible robot that is capable of precise navigation and maneuvering in order to detect defects within water filled piping systems. The robot is spheroidal with a smooth surface and no external appendages. It propels itself with centrifugal pumps which suck in water from the environment, and pump it out in various directions. This thesis covers the design and implementation of the software, electrical, and a few mechanical systems of the robot. Specifically, it details the programming techniques for the microcontroller and graphical user interface code, circuit board design, wiring, and waterproofing. A robot prototype was built, and experiments have given useful data to construct a model to supplement the field of underwater robotic design.

Abstract:
The interruption of electric power is always an extreme inconvenience in every sector of life, as was experienced during the massive Eastern United States blackout of 2003. Power shortages and interruptions in the refining industry are certainly no different, but the industry has responded to the uncertainties by approaching independence from the dominant utility grids through the installation of natural gas fueled co-generation units and/or the addition of flue gas driven expander power generation units, but of course the long term reliability of these systems is a major concern. A large hot gas expander, installed in a refinery, operating at a temperature of 705°C to 760°C, can be used to generate needed electric power [1]. However, these machines are very sensitive to the connected piping loads, and the long term operating reliability is most assuredly determined by the correct detail design of the inlet and outlet piping systems. This paper will only discuss in detail the design of the expander inlet piping system. This system is considered as one of the most complicated piping systems to analyze and design in the entire refinery.

Abstract:
Abstract With the increasing diversity of personal preferences for products, the conventional style of design using a series of consecutive procedures is inadequate to create designs that satisfy those preferences under the frequent changes of requirements in design specifications. Under these circumstances, conceptual design plays a key role to comply with those preferences and requirements, and to shorten the lead time in product development. This is also true in the domain of piping layout design, where a designer makes design in a trial-and-error way to comply with the requirements frequently changed in specification until the final design is formulated. The paper describes an approach of piping route path planning using genetic algorithm (GA). Optimization technique of GA generates a preliminary route path through evolution of genes which represent the piping route path. A designer evaluates the route path, modifies it, and repeats the procedure until the appropriate path is designed. In this way, a designer can interactively proceed the layout of piping in a collaborative manner using a design support system. The paper shows the procedure of the method and some results of simulation.

Abstract:
Polymer composite piping that is composed of a fiber reinforcement phase embedded in a continuous polymer matrix is associated with high specific strength and excellent corrosion properties. The fiber reinforcement is often considered to dominate the mechanical performance of composite structures. Consequently, principal design parameters for composite piping are usually associated with the fiber architecture, which in many practical applications has been limited to simple angle-ply configurations. Nevertheless, the function of the polymer phase is not limited to merely providing rigidity to the otherwise pliable fiber architecture. In fact, the often quoted high strength of composites is sustained by a load-sharing mechanism that the matrix enables between filaments. In this manner, the effect of localized flaws and filament damage is mitigated, and only the accumulation of numerous micro damage events leads to component failure. An additional function of the polymer matrix is to prevent ingress of fluid into the composite and possible leakage in pressure-bearing components. The design of composite piping therefore needs to consider a matrix-sensitive damage criterion. In view of variable loading conditions and multi-angle fiber architectures this study investigates design optimization techniques intended to yield better performance in terms of strength and especially fluid permeation resistance.

Abstract:
Pipe stressing programs will often show that the selected class of flange is not capable of accommodating the applied piping moments. In this case, unless a higher class of flange is chosen or the piping layout changed to reduce the flange moments, the pipe stressing program will indicate that the piping does not meet all of the requirements of the piping code. If the moments acting on the flange cannot be reduced, must a higher class of flange be chosen or are there other flange analysis techniques that can be used to show that the moments are not excessive? This paper compares a range of flange analysis techniques to investigate the bending moments that may be accommodated; both from a flange stress and from a flange leakage point of view. The objective of the work is to illustrate the variations in computed results and to help the piping designer choose an appropriate method for assessing flange moments. There is a multitude of different flange configurations considering combinations of flange type, size, class, schedule, gasket and the results of any comparison will be affected by many other parameters such as pressure, temperature and bolt pretension. The comparisons have thus been limited to a range of commonly used flange configurations in sizes up to 12 inch in an attempt to draw some general conclusions about the various assessment methods.

Abstract:
Vibration of the recycle piping system on the Main Oil Line (MOL) Export Pumps from a platform in the North Sea raised concern about pipe breakage due to fatigue. Failures had already occurred in associated small bore piping and the instrument air supply lines and control accessories on the recycle flow control valves. Concern also existed due to the vibration of non-flowing pipe work and systems such as the deck structure, cable trays and other instrumentation, which included fire and gas detection systems. Many changes involving bracing of small bore attachments, stiffening of supports, adding supports and stiffing the deck structure were implemented without resolving the problem. The vibration was finally solved by adding enough pressure stages to assure the valve trim exit velcoities and energy levels were reduced to levels demonstrated historically as needed in severe service applications. This vibration energy reduction was more than 16 times. This was achieved by reducing the valve trim exit velocity from peaks of 74 m/s to 12 m/s (240 ft/s to 40 ft/s).

Abstract:
The proving test of a large-scale piping system and elasto-plastic analyses were conducted to assure safety margins of current and newly proposed seismic design codes for piping in Japanese nuclear power plants. Two test models were used, one for the design method confirmation test and one for the ultimate strength test. The allowable acceleration safety margin (MA) was defined as the ratio of Af/AS2, where Af is the maximum input acceleration corresponding to piping failure in a single seismic input, and AS2 is the maximum allowable input acceleration for the S2 seismic wave according to Japanese seismic design codes for Class 1 piping components. When the current code was applied to the design method confirmation test model, associated with the 10% broadened response spectrum of the S2 seismic wave for a PWR building, MA was revealed to be 9.6 for a frequency ratio (RW) of 0.7. Without the response spectrum broadening, MA decreases to 4.9. Redefined as the ratio in terms of the displacement and cyclic peak stress of the highest stressed component, the safety margins (MD, MFC) tend to change to 7.7 and 3.7, respectively. The newly proposed code includes the following modifications from the current code rules: 1) only the allowable stress limits to prevent fatigue failure is ruled for the “S2” seismic wave, 2) a new diagram of the Ke factor in the fatigue design analysis is implemented. The safety margin MA of the proposed code with the broadened spectrum was revealed to be still as high as 6.6 for RW = 0.7. Analytical evaluation was conducted to discuss the tendency of the safety margins for seismic input conditions that differ from RW = 0.7, and the degree of conservatism or margin included in design analysis methods, whose degree is related to the safety margins.
