Abstract:
El objetivo del presente trabajo fue comparar la profundidad de penetración de un colorante en el canal cervical de la oveja, simulando una inseminación con una pipeta de uso tradicional con otra de diseño especial que dispone un globo inflable en el extremo libre que impide el reflujo del colorante. Ochenta tractos reproductivos de ovejas vacías fueron recuperados de un camal en Lima, Perú, y distribuidos al azar para su cateterización con una de las dos pipetas, depositando 0.5 ml de azul de metileno. El globo de la pipeta de diseño especial se infló antes del depósito del colorante. Se abrió cada una de las cérvix y parte del útero y se midió la profundidad de ingreso de las pipetas y del colorante, donde el borde del primer pliegue cervical se asignó como punto cero (0). Ambas pipetas penetraron 19.9 ± 9.6 mm. El colorante alcanzó la misma profundidad con la pipeta tradicional y 60.0 ± 9.7 mm con la pipeta modificada (p<0.05). Se concluye que al utilizar la pipeta modificada es factible depositar un fluido más cercanamente al útero.

El presente documento tiene como objetivo demostrar la importancia de utilizar trampa de evaporación durante el proceso de calibración de pipetas de pistón, específicamente a niveles de microlitros (µL). Se realizaron calibraciones a una pipeta del laboratorio LABCAL utilizando el método gravímetro, con trampa de evaporación y sin utilizar trampa ni ninguna corrección por evaporación, se realizaron 10 repeticiones en tres puntos diferentes y los valores fueron comparados con un valor de referencia proporcionado por el certificado de calibración de la misma pipeta analizada, valores determinados por el laboratorio nacional de metrología LACOMET. Como resultado se demuestra que al no utilizar trampa de evaporación se obtienen diferencias de hasta 1 µL con respecto al valor de referencia.

Abstract:
O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho reprodutivo de 423 fêmeas suínas de ordem de parto 1 a 9 submetidas à inseminação intra-uterina (IAU), com um novo modelo de pipeta (T1) cuja extremidade não é fixada na cérvix ou uma pipeta de IAU modelo Verona® e que permite a fixação da sua extremidade em espiral na cérvix (T2). Para comparar as duas pipetas, foi considerado o grau de dificuldade para realização das inseminações, o tempo necessário para realizá-las, a presença de sangramento após a inseminação, a presença de refluxo no momento da inseminação, as taxas de retorno ao estro (TR), de prenhez (TPR) e de parto ajustada (TPA), além do número de leitões nascidos (NT). As fêmeas de ambos os grupos foram inseminadas com doses de 1 bilhão de espermatozóides, em intervalos de 24 horas. A passagem do cateter de IAU através da cérvix foi possível em 95,9% das fêmeas, sem diferença entre os tratamentos (P>0,05). Em pelo menos uma das inseminações, foi observado sangue no cateter, após a realização da IAU, em 20,6% das fêmeas do T1 e 15,2% das fêmeas do T2 (P=0,14). O tempo médio necessário para realizar a inseminação foi de 2,1 minutos para o T1 e 2,3 minutos para o T2 (P=0,26). O percentual de fêmeas com refluxo de sêmen no momento da inseminação foi maior (P=0,01) no T1 (8,4%) em comparação ao T2 (2,9%). Não houve diferença (P>0,05) nas variáveis TR (8,0 e 4,8%), TPR (93,4 e 96,2%) e NT (12,4 e 12,7 leitões) entre T1 e T2, respectivamente. A TPA do T1 (90,6%) apresentou tendência (P=0,07) de ser inferior à do T2 (95,1%). No T1, as fêmeas primíparas apresentaram maior TR e menor TPA em comparação às pluríparas (P<0,05). Os resultados mostram que a nova pipeta pode ser utilizada sem prejuízos ao desempenho reprodutivo, em fêmeas pluríparas, mas sugerem cautela para sua utilização em fêmeas primíparas.

Desde hace varios años, el modelo de fragmentación fractal ha atraido la atención de los investigadores, como un camino lógico para describir e interpretar distribuciones de partículas observadas. El análisis textural de un suelo ha mostrado ser muy importante, pues se utiliza para diagnosticar y predecir el funcionamiento y uso del mismo. Los métodos más populares para determinar la textura han sido los de sedimentación en agua utilizando el hidrómetro o la pipeta. Ambos tienen como objetivo encontrar la fracción de masa de partículas que se encuentran en suspensión a tiempos prefijados y relacionarla con los diámetros de las mismas. En este trabajo se ha desarrollado una nueva función potencial que relaciona la fracción de masa en suspensión con el tiempo de sedimentación. Utilizando la misma se puede determinar la dimensión fractal de fragmentación de una distribución de partículas en sedimentación. La nueva ecuación ha sido chequeada con datos propios obtenidos por el hidrómetro de Bouyoucos y otros publicados en la literatura, obtenidos mediante la pipeta de Robinson. El acuerdo logrado entre la teoría y los datos experimentales, mediante la técnica de regresión no lineal, ha sido excelente. Los valores de la dimensión fractal de fragmentación resultaron entre 2,404 y 2,512, para muestras de La Plata, Argentina, y entre 2,434 y 2,819 para los suelos de California, USA. El coeficiente de determinación, R², fue en todos los casos mayor que 0,9.

La finalidad del trabajo fue identificar posibles infecciones por Campylobacter fetus en hembras bubalinas de un rodeo de la Provincia de Corrientes, Argentina. Las muestras fueron tomadas según el método de la pipeta para mucus cérvico–vaginal. El diagnóstico de laboratorio se realizó por inmunofluorescencia directa. Sobre 29 hembras de 2 a 3 años de edad analizadas, cinco (17%) resultaron positivas al diagnóstico realizado en el momento del tacto.</p>

El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el método de Bouyoucos, a diferentes tiempos de agitación utilizando dos dispersantes químicos, para la determinación de la distribución de tamaño de partícula en suelos ligeramente alcalinos de Córdoba, Colombia. Para ello, ocho suelos fueron sometidos a un proceso de dispersión mecánica, que consistió en una agitación lenta, en un equipo tipo Wagner a 60 rpm con cinco tiempos de agitación 2, 4, 6, 10 y 16 horas y un testigo a 0 h. La dispersión química de las muestras se realizó utilizando dos dispersantes; Calgon ((NaPO3)6 0.058 M + Na2CO3 0.075 M) y una mezcla compuesta de Calgon más pirofosfato ((NaPO3)6 + Na2CO3) + (Na4P2O7)) 0.1 M a pH 9,1. Además, a las muestras se les determino la granulometría por el método de pipeta. Las pruebas de medias y modelos de regresión de los contenidos de arena, limo y arcilla fueron analizados usando el software estadístico SAS. De acuerdo a los resultados obtenidos, no se encontró diferencias significativas entre las 10 y 16 h de agitación, por lo tanto 10 h son suficientes para obtener un máximo estado de dispersión. El contenido de la fracción arena presentó un decrecimiento exponencial que siguió el modelo y=a+be^(((-x)⁄c)), con coeficientes de determinación superiores a 0.90. La fracción de arcilla presentó un comportamiento exponencial creciente de primer orden, y=a-be^(((-x)⁄c)) con coeficientes de determinación mayores del 90%. La clasificación textural por Bouyoucus con el dispersante propuesto a 10 h de agitación fue 75 % similar al determinado por el método de pipeta, y para el Calgon fue 62.5%.

Abstract: International Commite for Standarization in Hematology (ICSH) recommends hemoglobin examination using Cyanmethemoglobin method. Examination of Hb Cyanmethemoglobin using sahli pipette in sampling. The Sampling method flow through the hose. The use of glass pipets do not have high accuracy and precission for less than volumes 1 ml, so in small fluid displacement less than 1000 (microliter) using micropipet or commonly known as automatic pipette. The aim of this research was to know the precision value between sampling using the sahli pipette and mikropipet on examination of hemoglobin value of Cyanmethemoglobin method accepted or not on standard Clinical Laboratoty Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and to analyze the difference of precision between sampling using pipette sahli and micropipette on examination of hemoglobin Cyanmethemoglobin method. The design of this study was descriptive anlytic. This research using EDTA blood examination with the number of 36 test samples. Preliminary period expression used 60 test samples. The hemoglobin examination using Cyanmethemoglobin method by spectrophotometry. Based on the results of the research, the value of % CV of sahli’s pipet is 4.60% and the value % CV of micropipet is 2.02%. and the value %CV The maximum recommended by the CLIA can be received from the sahli and mikropipet pipette that is <7%. he data obtained were statistically analyze by using Willcoxon Test and the result P 0.000 <0.05. Desain penelitian ini adalah deskriptif analitik. Penelitian ini menggunakan bahan pemeriksaan berupa darah EDTA dengan jumlah 36 sampel uji. Ditahapan periode pendahuluan digunakan sebanyak 60 sampel uji. Metode pemeriksaan hemoglobin menggunakan metode Cyanmethemoglobin secara fotometri. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian yang dilakukan diperoleh nilai %CV pipet sahli sebesar 4,60% dan nilai %CV mikropipet sebesar 2,02%. Nilai %CVmaksismum yang di rekomendasikan oleh CLIA dapat diterima dari pipet sahli dan mikropipet yaitu <7%. Data yang diperoleh diolah secara statistik menggunakan uji Willcoxon didapatkan hasil P 0.000<0.05. Sehingga dapat disimpulkan ada perbedaan signifkan antara pipet sahli dan mikropipet.

Abstract:
O estudo objetivou descrever a modelagem ambiental avaliando os parâmetros morfométricos e pedológicos da bacia hidrográfica do rio Una, Ibiúna, São Paulo, utilizando técnicas de geoprocessamento em ambiente SIG. A avaliação dos parâmetros hidrológicos e morfométricos foi determinada a partir de rotinas de processamento nos módulos Surface, Hidrology e Integrated Water Management. Os parâmetros pedológicos de textura e matéria orgânica foram avaliados pelo método da pipeta e combustão. A bacia estende-se por 96km², com forma irregular e alongada, não sujeita a enchentes, altitude média de 937 metros e cota máxima de 1175 metros. O relevo é fortemente ondulado, com declividade média de 18 %. Os solos apresentam tendência à textura arenosa e menos siltosa e matéria orgânica entre 10 a 60%.

A inseminação intra-uterina (IAU) permite reduzir o número de espermatozóides e o volume de diluente em comparação à inseminação tradicional. No entanto, a técnica ainda apresenta algumas limitações a serem superadas para que seja uma alternativa de diminuição dos custos de cobertura. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho reprodutivo de 423 fêmeas suínas de ordem de parto 1 a 9 submetidas à inseminação intra-uterina (IAU), com um novo modelo de pipeta (T1) cuja extremidade não é fixada na cérvix ou uma pipeta de IAU modelo Verona® e que permite a fixação da sua extremidade em espiral na cérvix (T2). The aim of this diploma thesis is to design and create a prototype of automatic pipetting head that will be useful for pipetting in laboratories after attaching it to a robotic manipulator. In the beginning, a research about various types of automatic pipetting heads was made followed by a device design and component analysis. The prototype was made using 3D printing method and it utilises a peristaltic pump, Arduino microcontroller and Bluetooth interface. A measurement of repeatability and dispensing accuracy was made on the finished device. The results are evaluated in the conclusion.

Abstract:
In old houses, the pipes can often be in poor conditions and require cleaning to improve air quality. There are robotic solutions to this problem but often only for large industrial pipes and not for regular pipes that you would find in your home. Pipes can often be hard to access and even harder to determine the pipe’s condition. This thesis aims to research and build a small robot that can travel through pipes, gather footage and attempt to clean them. The goal is to create a robot that can climb vertically in pipes, record video inside of the pipes and detect obstacles. After research was done a prototype was built. The prototype uses spring loaded pistons that pushes wheels against the walls of the pipes to provide friction for vertical travel. To be able to perform all these tasks, the robot uses tools that can be exchanged depending on what needs to done. The ability to turn in pipes has been ignored in this thesis due to time restrictions but could be done as future work. The resulting prototype is a robot that can steadily travel vertically through pipes, carry its own weight of 750 grams and an additional load of up to 500 grams. The robot is able to stop at pre-determined locations by measuring the distance it has travelled by using a hall-effect sensor.
I gamla hus kan ventilationsrör ofta vara i dåligt skick och vara i behov av städning eller reparation för att öka luftkvalitén. Det finns robotar som loser detta problem men de är ofta skapade för stora industriella rör och inte för rör som man hittar hemma. Rör kan ofta vara svåra att komma åt och det kan vara ännu svårare att veta vilket skick rören är i. Det här projektet ska ta fram en liten robot som kan färdas genom rör och spela in video. Om tid finns, ska den också städa upp i rören. Målet med projektet är att skapa en robot som kan klättra vertikalt i rör, spela in video inuti rören och upptäcka hinder. Efter forskning så byggdes en prototyp. Prototypen använder fjädrade kolvar som trycker hjulen mot väggarna i röret och utvecklar därmed friktion för att kunna färdas vertikalt. För att kunna utföra uppgifterna så kommer roboten att kunna använda olika verktyg som byts ut beroende på vad som behöver utföras. Möjligheten att kunna svänga i rören har ignorerats i det här projektet på grund av tidsbegränsning men bör ses över vid framtida utveckling. Den slutgiltiga prototypen är en robot som kan färdas stabilit vertikalt genom rör, lyfta sin egna vikt på 750 gram och en extra vikt på upp till 500 gram. Roboten kan också stanna vid förbestämda platser då den kan mäta hur långt den färdats genom att använda en hall effekt sensor.

Abstract:
The performance of buried pipelines in areas subjected to permanent ground displacements is an important engineering consideration in the gas distribution industry, since the failure of such systems poses a risk to public and property safety. Although, the ground movements and its variations over time can be detected and mapped with reasonable confidence, these data are of little use due to a lack of reliable models to correlate such displacements to the condition of the buried pipe. The objective of this thesis is to develop methods to estimate the pipe performance based on the measured ground displacement. An analytical method was developed to estimate the pipe performance when the pipe is subjected to tensile loading caused by the relative ground movements occurring along the pipe axis. As a part of the derivation, a modified interface friction model was developed considering the increase in friction due to constrained dilation of the soil, and the impact of mean effective stress on soil dilation. This interface friction model was combined with a nonlinear pipe stress–strain model to derive an analytical solution to represent the performance of the pipe. Using the proposed model, axial force, strain, and mobilized frictional length along the pipe can be obtained for a measured ground displacement can be obtained. Large-scale field pipe pullout tests were performed to verify the results of the proposed analytical model, in which good agreements were observed for tests conducted at different soil/burial conditions, displacement rates and pipe properties. Considering the similarities in the axial pullout mechanism, the analytical model was extended to explain the pullout response of geotextiles buried in reinforced soil structures. In this derivation, a new interface friction model was developed for planar members by considering the changes in normal stress due to constrained soil dilation. Another analytical model was derived for the case of a pipe that is subjected to combined loading from axial tension and bending when the initial soil loading is acting perpendicular to the pipe axis. With the direct account of the axial tensile force development, more realistic pipe performance behaviors were obtained as compared to the results obtained from traditional numerical formulations.

PIPPET 1 tar avstamp i 10 olika spår eller riktningar som är tongivande för mitt konstnärsskap. Av 10 spår valdes 3 slumpmässigt ut; Öknen, Humorn och Språket. De övriga finns nämnda i uppsatsens appendix. Då min konstnärliga praktik är projektbaserad och diskparat både i estetik och koncept, syftar detta till att bena ut min egen praktik för att komma närmare pudelns kärna. De olika spåren tar upp både populärkulturella och konstnärliga referenser, samt några få personliga anekdoter som har bäring för dem. Även tankar och kritiska reflektioner om egna konstverk tas upp.I "Öknen" disskuteras det sökande och det mytiska. "Humorn" kretsar kring den relativt nya teoribildningen Concrete Comedy, som utformats av konstnären och skribenten David Robbins. I "Språket" disskuteras användandet av ord och text som bilder, men bortom det typografiska och litterära.

A number of earlier researchers investigated the soil structure interaction parameters which affect the structural behaviour of buried flexible pipes. However, it was not until the mid-1990s that the importance of rocker pipe design to accommodate differential settlement raised awareness of the consequent absence in current design procedure [BS EN 1295-3; 1998]. This study widens the understanding of the effect of differential ground movements on the behaviour of flexible pipes to address concerns raised to the Committee European de Normalisation. Many pipeline failures result from the excessive strains developed in the vicinity of the junction between a pipe and a settling structure. Case studies of such failures are presented in this thesis, which demonstrates that it can occur not only in large diameter pipeline but also in small diameter domestic pipeline systems. A method of analysis and the use of developed appropriate rocker pipe length is an industrially useful outcome of this research. Analytical solutions for flexible pipes have been developed based on the concept of beams on elastic foundation approach. Non-dimensional relationships have been developed and are presented in the form of charts. These charts permit hand calculations and rapid verification of structural design of the pipeline and, thus, assess the integrity of the existing pipelines located in areas with ground instability. Knowledge of the soil strength and sub-grade modulus is required, along with pipeline geometry and pipe stiffness, to apply the non-dimensional relationships. The soil parameters can be measured in situ or estimated using empirical correlations. The cause for failure has been investigated with the proposed analytical soil structure interaction approach which identifies the zone of distress in the pipeline. The analysis has been extended to demonstrate how a rocker pipe system can be incorporated to alleviate such distress. The concept of rocker pipes has also been investigated in the study through laboratory scale testing. Soil box tests, with ground conditions defined through plate/pipe load testing, have been developed. Full-scale testing on flexible pipes instrumented with FlexiForce pressure sensors at the pipe invert, strain gauges measuring strain due to induced differential settlement on the pipe crown and deflection transducers measuring deflection profiles along the pipe length due to differential settlement of the end structure, have been used to validate the mathematical modelling. Ile combination of rocker pipes with flexible joints and elastic effects removes the distress imposed by the differential settlement, and provides the possibility for a better comparison with the data obtained from both theoretical analysis and experimental tests. Results from each of these approaches are compared with those from experiments. It is concluded that there is need for a rational design procedure analysis for rocker pipes to be incorporated into codes of practice, such as EN 1295.

A partir da análise e da interpretação, buscou-se compreender como aconteceu o trânsito da cultura da imigração italiana do Rio Grande do Sul de seu contexto real para os limites comportados pelo âmbito da ficção apresentados na obra. Nesse processo de transfiguração, buscou-se compreender de que maneira a cultura da imigração italiana e a cultura clerical colaboraram para que o texto literário analisado assumisse os contornos que o constituem, bem como qual o resultado dessa conjugação.

In this process i intended to comprehend in what way the Italian Immigration and the clergy culture were helpful to the analysed work, as well as the result of this conjugation.

Introdução: O refrigerante é uma bebida não alcoólica constituído principalmente de açucares, os quais conferem o sabor adocicado característico da bebida. A sacarose é um dos açucares mais encontrado, mas também podem ser utilizados lactose, galactose, frutose, glicose e maltose, a variação vai depender do produto. O efeito que as bebidas açucaradas trazem para a saúde preocupa as autoridades. Segundo a Organização Mundial da Saúde, a taxa de obesidade triplicou nos últimos 46 anos, e houve um aumento em crianças e adolescentes entre 5 e 19 anos passando de 11 milhões em 1975 para 124 milhões em 2016. Essa doença crônica alcança 650 milhões de pessoas mundialmente, e é um dos fatores que cooperam para várias doenças não transmissíveis, como diabetes do tipo II, hipertensão, doenças cardiovasculares entre outros. Objetivos: Quantificar açucares totais, não-redutores e redutores pelo método de Lane Eynon, e abordar os possíveis impactos na saúde humana derivados do consumo irracional dessa bebida. Materiais: Balão volumétrico; Pipeta volumétrica; Proveta; Erlenmeyer; Papel tornassol; Solução de azul de metileno 1 %; Solução de glucose 1 %; Solução de Fehling A e B; ácido clorídrico; Pérolas de vidro, Chapa aquecedora; Banho-maria; Béquer; Bureta; Água deionizada. Métodos: Utilizou-se o método clássico de Lane Eynon, usando como o agente titulante uma solução de glicose 1%, para determinar o branco, e posteriormente Coca-cola, diluída. Após as titulações aplicou-se os achados as equações visando determinar as variáveis. Resultados: Na análise confirmou-se que a variação está de acordo com a RDC360 da ANVISA, mesmo havendo presença predominante de açúcar invertido na amostra, que é derivado da hidrolise da sacarose. Açúcares redutores: 35,4±0,56g/350mL; não-redutores: 1,55±0,64g/350mL; total: 36,95±1,20g/350mL são outras dosagens. Conclusão: Uma lata de 350 ml de Coca-Cola possui 37g de açúcar, e a recomendação é que o consumo de açúcar diário não exceda 50g.

Introdução: Os dípteros muscóides apresentam grande importância em medicinaveterinária e saúde pública por serem carreadores de patógenos e causadores de miíases. O uso de inseticidas químicos tem sido utilizado atualmente como principal método de controle dessas moscas, são altamente eficazes, mas podem causar danos ao meio ambiente, aos animais domésticos e aos seres humanos. Uma forma alternativa a este tipo de controle são os bioinseticidas, produzidos a partir de metabólitos secundários de plantas, os quais são rapidamente degradados no meio, minimizando riscos à saúde. Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de extratos etanólicos de folhas e de sementes de Moringa oleifera sobre o desenvolvimento pós-embrionário de C. putoria. Material e métodos: Para os testes foram utilizadas larvas recém eclodidas (L1) tratadas com diferentes concentrações de extratos etanólicos de sementes e de folhas de M. oleifera (5 mg/L, 10 mg/L, 25 mg/L, 50 mg/L, 75 mg/L e 100 mg/L). Foram utilizadas 3 réplicas (30 (L1)) para cada concentração, um grupo controle (sem substância) e um grupo controle com DMSO. As larvas recém eclodidas foram tratadas topicamente com a solução com o auxílio da pipeta, sendo usado 1μL/neolarva. Os parâmetros analisados foram o peso das larvas maduras (L3), duração do período larval, pupal e da fase de neolarva a adulto, assim como a viabilidade dos estágios de desenvolvimento, e a razão sexual. Resultados: Os resultados mostraram que os extratos de folhas e de sementes de M. oleifera causaram efeitos semelhantes em todas as concentrações testadas, atrasando o desenvolvimento pós-embrionário e reduzindo o peso larval. Quanto a mortalidade, no período de neolarva a adulto as concentrações de 50, 75 e 100 mg/L dos extratos de folhas e de sementes de M. oleifera se mostraram eficazes, matando acima de 20%. O controle sem/com DMSO não apresentaram mortes em nenhum dos estágios pós-embrionários. Conclusão: Os extratos de folhas e de sementes de M. oleifera se mostraram uma alternativa viável para o controle da mosca da espécie C. putoria.

Abstract Rigid pipelay vessels use two types of equipment to hold the pipe under tension while it is being deployed on the seabed: tensioners and hang-off clamps (HOC). Tensioners are used to maintain tension while paying out the pipe behind the vessel, while the HOC holds the pipe statically during welding operations. For both pieces of equipment, the tension is held through frictional pads in contact with the pipe. With the necessity to reach greater water depths leading to an overall increase of pipeline weights and stiffness (and therefore top tension), the installation of rigid pipelines has become more challenging. In other cases, such as pipe-in-pipe (PiP), carrier pipe wall thicknesses are often optimised as much as possible while lower grade materials are selected to reduce costs, making it more difficult to provide pipelay equipment settings that can satisfy both grip and pipe local integrity requirements. Simple hand calculations and basic equipment modelling are not sufficient to provide safe equipment settings and optimised allowable sea states. The new DNVGL-ST-N001 [1] (Marine Operations and Marine Warranty) also increases scrutiny on pipelay equipment and pipe interaction, making it imperative to develop more in-depth methodologies for settings calculation. This paper gives an overview of a robust methodology for pipelay equipment settings and demonstrates through practical examples how it improves safety while optimising operations, therefore enabling more efficient pipelay operations and reducing waiting on weather.

Abstract:
This work focuses on a methodology to predict the fatigue life of flexible pipes with wires broken in their tensile armors. Initially, the mechanical behavior of these pipes is discussed. Relying on this discussion, a simple set of equations is proposed in order to calculate the stresses in the armors of these pipes. These equations employ pre-estimated linear coefficients to convert forces and moments that act on the pope into stresses. These stresses are then processed by well-known cycle counting methods and S-N curves are finally used to evaluate fatigue damage at several points in the pipe’s cross section. The use of this methodology is exemplified by the assessment of the fatigue life of a 6” flexible pipe in which 0 up to 5 wires of its outer tensile armor are broken. The results indicate a substantial reduction in the fatigue life of the pipe with the increasing number of wires broken.

Abstract:
The behavior of crack growth of polymeric materials is affected by several operating conditions such as, crosshead speed, specimen thickness, load line, and specimen configurations which reverse the behavior of crack from stable to unstable crack growth behavior. The main objective of the present paper is the determination of plane strain fracture toughness (KIC) for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) used in piping water transmission systems. The dimensions of the PVC pipe are outside diameter, Do=315 mm, standard dimensions ratio, SDR=13.23, ratio between outside to inside radii Ro/Ri =1.179 and pipe thickness, t =24 mm. Curved specimens are prepared from a pipe by cutting 12 mm thickness ring segments. The curved specimens are divided into two specimen configurations, namely curved three point bend, CTPB and C-shaped tension, CST specimens. All specimens are provided artificially with a pre-crack. CTPB specimen is further cut into five 72° sectors with each being centrally notched to a depth approximately a = 0.479 of the wall thickness. CST specimen configuration is characterized by the eccentricity X = 0, and 0.5W, of the loading holes from the bore surface. Linear elastic fracture mechanics theory (LEFM) is used to predict the plane strain fracture. The tests are carried out at room temperature, Ta equal 20 °C and different crosshead speeds of (10–500 mm/min). The fracture test results reveal that, the crosshead speed has been proven to affect the mode of failure and mode of fracture. At lower crosshead speeds the mode of failure is ductile, while at higher crosshead speeds it is brittle. The specimen configuration affects also on the fracture toughness. C-shaped tension specimens show higher fracture toughness in case of pin loading location X = 0.5W than X = 0 by about (12%). Transitional crosshead speed is affected by specimen geometry. C-shaped tension specimens (CST) at x= 0 and 0.5W have higher transitional crosshead speed compared with CTPB specimen configuration.
