Finlay, Jamie P. "Numerical methods for the stress analysis of pipe-work junctions." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2004. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/5632/.

Full text
Abstract:
Pipe junctions arc a regular feature of piping and pressure vessel systems and are often the subject of multiple loads. acting simultaneously and at irregular intervals. Due to the nature and complexity of the loading. the subject has received a significant amount of study from designers and stress analysts to resolve some of the difficulties in stressing pressure structures. An extensive finite element (FE) analysis was carried out on 92 reinforced buttwelded pipe junctions manufactured by the collaborating company. Spromak Ltd. After comparing the resulting effective stress factor (ESF) data with ESFs for un-reinforced fahricated tee (UFT) it was concluded that, for the majority of loads, reinforced branch outlets appear better able to contain stresses than their un-reinforced counterparts. The linear FE study was followed by the inelastic analysis of three reinforced branch junctions. The purpose of the research was to investigate the potential use of such analysis as a tool for estimating the bursting pressure of pipe junctions and satisfying customer requirement for proof of a products performance under internal pressure. Results obtained showed that small displacement analysis is unsuitable for estimating the bursting pressure of a pipe junction, whilst the large displacement results were similar to those obtained using a hand-calculation. Ultimately, the study concluded that inelastic analysis was too expensive, offering little by way of insight into the problem than could be found by using classical stress analysis techniques. Following on from the study of reinforced branch outlets, this thesis described work undertaken with British Energy Ltd. to extend their current capability of stress prediction in UFT junctions using a FE based neural network approach. Upon completion of training new neural networks, the PIPET program was tested against new, previously unseen, FE data generated for this study with good results. The program was further evaluated by comparing the output from PIPET with FE data obtained from reviewed literature. For the pressure load case, a significant proportion of the data obtained from said literature was within the PIPET predicted stress ranges. with the new version of PIPET tending to calculate slightly lower stresses than the original program. However, whilst the pressure load case comparisons proved useful, the branch bending cases showed less concordance with PIPET's predicted stress ranges.

Nelson, Stacy A. "The role of sand erosion in the integrity of process pipe-work." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2004. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk/R?func=search-advanced-go&find_code1=WSN&request1=AAIU203463.

Abstract:
Sand erosion in process pipe-work is one of the key contributors to hydrocarbon leaks in the offshore industry. The parameters influencing the erosion process are numerous and a review of investigations presented in the literature has classified these in terms of particle, fluid and material properties. A review of the mechanistic and empirical erosion models currently available to predict the amount of erosion is also presented. This review highlighted the need for a quantitative investigation into the effect of surface roughness on the erosion process, as this has not been investigated or included in any of the models presented in the literature. The experimental investigations were twofold. The first set of experiments, referred to as the Surface Morphology experiments, utilised optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate the mechanisms of material removal of ductile target materials, when subjected to erosion by sand particles entrained in a liquid medium. Particle impingement was at impact angles oblique (30°) and normal (90°) to the material surface. The second set of experiments, referred to as the Surface Profile experiments, utilised surface profilometry to monitor the changes in the surface profile of mild steel plate specimens, when subjected to erosion at an oblique (30°) impact angle. Fast Fourier Transforms were used to convert the surface profile scans into wave-number spectra, to facilitate better monitoring of the changes in the material surface over the erosion exposure period. Five specimens with initial average surface roughness Ra in the range of 0.7 microm to 1.14 microm were used. The investigation showed that the surface roughness parameter plays a significant role in the erosion process, particularly in the initial stages. The operating conditions of the impinging jet were associated with an equilibrium condition, both for the surface roughness and the eroded depth. As a result, specimens having an initial surface roughness value greater than the equilibrium Rae value showed a decrease in surface roughness, whereas those having an initial value less than the equilibrium value showed an increase in surface roughness. This trend was confirmed by the changes in the amplitudes of the wave-number spectra for each plate, over the erosion period. The eroded depth was greatest for the plate having the smallest absolute difference between the initial Ra value and the equilibrium Rae value. This subsequently decreased as the absolute difference between the initial and equilibrium surface roughness value increased.

Delain, Pierre. "Le concept d'œuvre de Jacques Derrida, un vaccin contre la loi du pire." Thesis, Paris Sciences et Lettres (ComUE), 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PSLEE002.

Full text
Abstract:
Jacques Derrida signs what is called “une oeuvre” ("a work") : a vast corpus of texts, in which other "works", great in number, are cited, studied, analyzed or deconstructed. He often uses the word "work", and more rarely, but in a significant way, he interrogates this word, or what he calls "the enigma" of the concept of work. In what he "says", then, a double "doing" is implied. On the one hand, he asks himself "What makes this work?", and we can analyze and comment upon what he says. But, on the other hand, we can also ask ourselves : "But what does Derrida do when he analyzes what it is that makes this work?" This second question is the one that tends to prevail in this study. In the fields of art history, esthetics or literary criticism, there exists an enormous litterature around the question of the work. To raise it, in the limited form of this essay, would lead to simplifications, approximations, or omissions. We have therefore made another choice : to seek out, in the derridian text itself, in its "doing", its auto-hetero-affection, the elements that could lead to the elaboration of a specific and singular concept of work. In order to account for external criticism, and also of the long history of philosophy around this thematics, we have privileged the Derridian text's structure of "invagination". In his text itself, drawing on the secondary literature, we can link up other thoughts involving the work, for example those of Levinas or Heidegger. This method has lead to the following hypotheses: 1. In the derridian work, including across the analysis of other works, the setting into play of an "it must", of one or several unconditional(s), and beginning with the first texts. 2. The structure of auto-immunity, described in the work, is operating within the work. "It must" protects itself against something. Against what? It is our hypothesis that this has to do with radical evil. 3. Despite the multiple aporias whose description occupies a large part of his work, the desire for protection, in principle impossible to realize, nonetheless succeeds. We can try to demonstrate this success, but we can also, above all, take note of it by reading : I ought to recognize, I ought to acknowledge that it vaccinates me. 4. This operation, that we also call “œuvrance” (“working”), is performative. It passes through five unconditional principles : leave the future open, address oneself to the other as such, aim for more than life, keep the secret, answer to principles -- in this very moment. 5. This leads to the definition of a "principle of the work": specific to the derridian work whose statement is the following : what takes place in the work, is unconditionally affirmed, beyond all calculation, all finality and all transaction

Barrett, Blake. "Drug Courts Work, but How? Preliminary Development of a Measure to Assess Drug Court Structure and Processes." Scholar Commons, 2011. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/2998.

Full text
Abstract:
The high prevalence of substance use disorders is well-documented among criminal offenders. Drug courts are specialty judicial programs designed to: 1) improve public safety outcomes; 2) reduce criminal recidivism and substance abuse among offenders with substance use disorders; and 3) better utilize scarce criminal justice and treatment resources. Drug courts operate through partnerships between the criminal justice, behavioral health and public health systems. Offenders participate in an intensive regimen of substance abuse treatment and case management while under close judicial supervision. Drug courts' effectiveness in reducing criminal recidivism and drug use has been documented through numerous primary studies as well as meta-analytic reviews. The task remains now to determine the causal mechanisms of drug courts. The current study conducted preliminary activities to develop a measure to assess drug court structures and practices based upon the Ten Key Components of drug courts (NADCP, 1997). The creation and use of such a measure is necessary to the understanding of how drug courts work, why and how best to invest scarce judicial and treatment resources to optimize drug court participant and program outcomes. An iterative process was conducted such that results from previous activities informed subsequent steps in the measurement development process. Participants consisted of a convenience sample of drug court personnel at three local drug courts as well as academic experts in drug courts and measurement. Preliminary measurement development activities included: 1) a comprehensive review of the literature; 2) semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders to inform item development; 3) construction of a draft survey protocol; 4) expert reviews of the draft survey protocol and initial item pool to assess item construct and content validity, response format and clarity; 5) pile sort activity, wherein participants sorted items into piles, one for each measure sub-construct and one `other' pile; 6) exploratory factor analyses based on a joint-proportion matrix derived from pile sort activity data on which items best represent measure sub-constructs; 7) cognitive interviews completed by key stakeholders to review items retained from exploratory factor analyses; and 8) final revisions to the item pool based upon results from cognitive interviews. The item pool developed through the current research will be used as the basis for a future large-scale pilot test to determine the true factor structure underlying the preliminary measure developed. Results of this future research are expected to identify similarities and differences in the underlying factor structure compared to the Ten Key Components.

Pomales, Tony Orlando. "“Estamos de pie y en lucha”/“We are standing and fighting”: aging, inequality, and activism among sex workers in neoliberal Costa Rica." Diss., University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1728.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last two decades, the use of empowerment approaches to help reduce health-related vulnerabilities and violence among female sex workers has increasingly informed global health efforts directed at HIV/STD prevention. The empowerment approach to sex worker health rejects both abolitionist and narrowly conceived clinical approaches in favor of strategies that promote commercial sex as valid work, strengthen sex workers’ agency, reinforce female sexual autonomy, and support rights-based framing. A significant outcome of the empowerment approach to integrating health, social, and legal strategies has been the creation of numerous sex worker associations and NGOs, which advocate for collective mobilization and community-based HIV/STD prevention programs among sex workers. Despite numerous studies examining the efficacy of community empowerment approaches to sex worker health and the creation of civil society organizations to implement such approaches, there has been little theorization about how participation in sex worker NGO-based programming and activism shapes the personal, embodied experiences and subjectivities of sex workers. Similarly, questions of how sex worker associations and NGOs are shaped by the experiences, realities, feelings, and personal opinions of sex workers have received limited attention. Given the morally charged and highly stigmatized environments in which sex workers typically operate, studying how and which sex workers come into contact with these NGOs helps to illuminate how community and kinship relations, and individual and collective aspirations, shape sex work activism and contribute to the making (and unmaking) of related associations and NGOs. Drawing on long-term ethnographic research with female sex workers and sex work activists, this work combines medical anthropological and feminist perspectives to interpret sex worker associations and NGOs as “local moral worlds” that highlight how subjectivities, body, moral experience, kinship, care, and women’s agency relate. From the subjective experiences of older female sex worker/activist informants, I argue that sex worker associations and NGOs are best comprehended not simply as the outcomes of global health efforts to curb the spread of HIV and other STDs, but also as complex social arenas that need to be reconsidered in light of existing relationships between and among sex workers and their families and the state. This argument is informed by my yearlong engagement with Women’s Solidarity House (WSH), a pseudonym for an organized association of active and retired female sex workers in the red-light district of San José, which recently received NGO status from the Costa Rican state. One important dimension of WSH that requires careful consideration is the fact that most of the women who participate in its development and programming are over the age of 40, with an average age of about 52. This fact makes WSH an interesting and important case study, since it caters most especially to female sex workers who are generally outside of the purview of most sex worker empowerment and health-related prevention programs, which are designed and implemented by public health researchers and development specialists. While theories of gender, stigma, and social inequality have increasingly informed medical anthropological efforts to understand how structural factors shape the personal, embodied experiences of sex workers and the distribution of HIV/STDs, there has been very little effort to understand how aging and ageism factor into the making and unmaking of sex worker embodiment and subjectivity and older women sex workers’ risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases and infections. Given that sex work is a profession or income-generating strategy that adult women in various stages of their lives perform, the lack of research and theorization about these aspects of female sex workers’ lives, I suggest, has prevented a broader research and programmatic response both to common risks such as HIV/STDs and violence, and to work-related health problems and occupational conditions that older sex workers may consider more important in their day-to-day lives. My research shows that a “structural approach” to sex work, which highlights the underlying social, historical, political, and economic forces that encourage and foster the economic exploitation, stigmatization, and negative health outcomes of women (and men) who sell sex, would benefit from adding a feminist anthropological perspective on aging. In this view, aging is a critical social structural inequality that society uses to devalue women’s status and which women often experience as stigmatizing and/or shameful. In Costa Rica, where recent reporting has suggested an increase in the number of older women in the local sex industry, studying women’s experiences of and responses to growing old in the sex trade reveals not only the long-term impacts of neoliberal reform polices, but also how gendered discourses about aging, increasing familial caregiving responsibilities, and growing inequality and economic pressure, together, conspire to limit older women sex workers’ employment opportunities and put them at greater risk of violence, discrimination, psychological distress, sexual assault, substance abuse, poverty, and HIV/STDs.

Abstract: This research has its central focus on the teaching work, in the context of formation of teachers, of mediator-teachers in the course Pedagogy for teachers at the beginning of school (PIE), done at the Faculty of Education of Universidade de Brasília, together with the Education State Secretary of Distrito Federal, authorized by MEC in the modality of Distance Education. The research focused on the following problem: how the work of the mediator-teacher develops inside the PIE course, identifying its most prominent features, challenges, limits, contradictions. The investigation took place between 2002 and 2005, at Universidade de Brasília. For its methodology, it was based on a qualitative research, in a socio-historic perspective and emerging as categories are the following dialectic pairs: scientific knowledge/practical knowledge, maintenance/change, objective/subjective conditions. The data collection was done through in loco participating observations of the work of the mediator-teacher (pedagogical coordenation and classroom); group interviews, questionnaries applied to teachers taking the course as well as to mediatior-teachers. The process of analysing the evidences was sustained by the analysis of content as a method to access the information that surpasses appearences, having as a fundamental procedure the theme analysis. The events led us to some discoveries: aspects related to theory/practice are still big challenges, considering there is a great fragility in the epistemological aspect of the formation, since having the mediator as a generalist does not on its own break the disciplinarization and fragmentation of knowledge; the work of the mediator-teacher is put in a position of transition between the traditional and the transformer (intensification and precariousness of the work; adverse material conditions; indiscriminate use of ¿dynamics¿, ¿experiences¿ and ¿techniques¿, which indicates a kind of pragmatism, pedagogical coordenation as space/time of organization of collective work). The subjective conditions indicate that the identity of the mediators presents itself in process, into a movement of the proper histority of the course and from the pedagogical work developed by the same ones, living moments when they are forming teachers and, concomitantly, they are formed. the concern with the domain of knowlegde in a consistent way was present in all the temporality of the research, that delineates one of the basic aspects at the mediator's work and that, therefore, intervenes with its subjectivity and the materiality of its work

Abstract:
In this doctorate thesis, I sought to present the relations and meetings occurred between a nurse, which works with spirituality and pipe in an Spiritual Center, with indigenous communities including the Guarani ethnicity and healers from Puebla, in Mexico. By presenting these relations, subjects related to Spirituality arises, together with its current importance in Education and Health. Within Spirituality, we present an approach about New Age and Neoshamanism, from many authors and researches of these subjects. Additionally, within the New Age subject, I present some of the shamanic traditions and rituals using Sacred Plants or Entheogenic Plants. Considering the anthropologic work made with indigenous, I present a current view of the challenges found by landlessness, difficulties in public policies in relation to indigenous people. I also present some work about the Guarani people, deepening the Shamanism subject in the shamanic women perspective, the Kunha Karaí, which use the pipe (petÿguá) for the spiritual healing work. This research was made from a ethnographic work, developed in some Guarani villages in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and a contact in Mexico with some healers of Puebla. With the Guarani people the ethnographic approach deepened the education subject from the Word and the Council, which are fundamental to the construction of the Guarani person.

Abstract:
In order to meet the customer demands and remain competitive in a market where product life cycles are every day shorter, companies are forced to update their product portfolios continuously. The process for phasing the products in the company portfolios (i.e. introducing the new products and deleting the old ones) is known as the Phase-In/Phase-Out (PIPO) Process or Rollover Process. In most of the companies, there is a lack of formal processes for planning the phasings, eliminating the obsolete products and introducing the updated ones. However, a good planning is a key point to succeed and to create a lower impact on customers. Moreover, to achieve the best results, a cross-functional department organization is necessary to share the correct information at the correct time. This Degree Project has been carried out at Coty France, in the Demand Planning Department. This department is responsible for deciding the discontinuation dates and managing the switches of the products. This Master Thesis focuses on determining a methodology to share the information among the departments involved in the PIPO process and creating a tool to estimate the discontinuation dates. Clear procedures have been defined for phasing the products and an Excel tool has been created to calculate the dates. Finally, to validate the final solution proposed, an analysis of the Customer Service Level has been performed to confirm that the use of these procedures reduces the impact on customers.

Abstract:
Medium density polyethylene (MDPE) is a semicrystalline thermoplastic polymer that has been increasingly used in engineering applications, as plastic pipes for water and gas distribution systems. Under constant load, however, this material may occasionally present creep failure, by means of a mechanism of slow crack growth, leading to leakage losses in the systems. Current methods used by industry to estimate durability of pipes are expensive, time consuming, non practical and inaccurate. The development of more efficient methods is a common target and fracture mechanics methods are promising in describing the crack propagation stage. Fracture mechanics testing methods, however, require the introduction of pre-cracks into the specimens. It is known that artificial methods of introducing pre-cracks produce some damage on the polymeric matrix, which may or not affect the results of tests, depending on the events that occur after the initial loading. Main propriety required of a pre-crack introducing method, therefore, is reproducibility. In this study three important fracture mechanics methods were applied to MDPE and the effects of different methods of pre-cracking over test results and over deformation structures of material matrix at the crack tip were investigated. Plane-strain fracture toughness - KIc tests were performed under cryogenic conditions, in view of the ductile behavior of material at room temperature and this strategy was well succeed. Results of Integral-J tests suggest that this method may not be applicable to MDPE, due to the peculiar fracture mechanism of the material. The essential work of fracture method EWF is well suited to study MDPE. The results of KIc and EWF tests showed that different pre-cracking methods cause different deformation structures in the material at the crack tip and affect the fracture tests with MDPE. EWF results showed also that the processing affect the fracture properties of materials too. It is proposed a new method for introducing pre-cracks, with more natural characteristics that requires complementary studies for its improving.

Abstract:
A review of the main natural dyes (particularly yellow flavonoids and red anthraquinones) and proteinaceous substrates used in Historical Tapestries and North American porcupine quill work was undertaken, and is summarised in Chapter 1. The analysis of natural dyes which have been used on museum artefacts other than textiles has received little systematic study, particularly those of non-European origin. In this research, the use of Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) for study of natural dyes found on historical textiles and ethnographical objects decorated with porcupine quill work is explored; this required a transfer of existing analytical protocols and methodology. The advantages of using Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) was evaluated through a method development based on the separation and quantification of ten flavonoid and anthraquinone dyes as described in Chapter 2. These methods were then applied to the characterisation of the dye sources found on a group of sixteenth century historical tapestries which form an important part of the Burrell Collection in Glasgow and are believed to have been manufactured in an English workshop (Chapter 3) and also to the analysis of some late nineteenth century North American porcupine quill work from a collection owned by National Museums Scotland (Chapter 5); allowing exciting conclusions to be drawn in each case about the range of dyestuffs used in their manufacture. The second aim of this research was the development of methodology for the non-invasive quantification of metal ion residues on porcupine quill substrates. This was achieved through a comparative study of reference porcupine quills prepared in-house with dyebaths containing a range of metal ion concentrations (copper and tin). The concentration of metal ions sorbed by the porcupine quills was then quantified with Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) coupled to Optical Emission Spectrometry (OES) and non-invasive Particle Induced X-Ray Emission analysis (PIXE) coupled with Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS) as described in Chapter 4. The responses provided by the different methods were compared and they were then applied to the study of micro-samples collected from mid-nineteenth century Northern Athapaskan porcupine quill work. Unexpectedly, the use of UPLC analysis and RBS-PIXE analysis allowed the characterisation of traded European natural dyes used with metallic mordants (copper and tin) on these samples, highlighting how European contact impacted on traditional Athapaskan porcupine quill work in the late nineteenth century (Chapter 5).

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of the report is to present machines, staff and requisite experience data within secant piling. The information may be utilized in comparison with other piling methods by corporations. Secant piling is used as a support structure whose task is to keep the soil from sliding in to the pit during excavation. Its positive aspects of the environment are a contributing factor to increased use of the method. By achieving lower vibration levels and minimize the reduction in the groundwater level, the method adds value. The secant pile method is extensively used abroad and nowadays it begins to be operated in Sweden. Now when Trafikverket has approved secant piling as a permanent structure, the method can lead to more usage in Sweden. The secant pile method in itself is not affected by the Swedish soil and climatic condition. It is the technique you are utilizing when using secant piling that’s affected by the geological and hydrogeological conditions. Soil that is consisting of boulders or variable stone sizes should use CSP technology with casing drilling. Techniques that don’t work in these soil conditions is CFA and CAP, which instead uses an auger drill. These techniques are utilized when the soil consists of solid clay or friction soil, which makes the work of the auger drill much easier than if the land consists of stone blocks. The conclusion of the report indicate that secant piles are the more expensive option, and that the method cannot compete with the more conventional support structures in that regard. To understand that secant piles will be beneficial the method must be seen from a broader perspective and you have to look at the impact of the surroundings and the soil conditions. In this way, added value is created. The method is suitable in urban setting with nearby buildings, where noise and vibration is an influencing factor. Projects that have embraced the secant pile method have varying costs, since they have used different secant pile techniques. At Norra länken 12 and 22 they used the CSP technology that had a capacity to make 2.5 piles per day at a cost of 11,500 SEK/m². In Bagers Plats in Malmö they used the CFA technology at a cost of 2,500 SEK/m². At Folkungagatan in Stockholm they used the CAP technology at a cost of 4,500 SEK/m². The method has both advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are that the method is flexible which means that it can be adapted to the desired geometry. This method helps to reduce vibration, which in turn minimizes the risk of subsidence. The disadvantages are that secant piling is more expensive than conventional supporting structures because of the method is time consuming. When secant piles that are used as a permanent support structure the anchor rods have to be tightened often and that is time consuming. The report presents the construction projects where secant piling is used. Projects presented in the report are Odenplan station, Spjutmo kraftstation, Norra länken 12 and 22, Bagers plats and Folkungagatan.

This thesis studies the existing processes for the pipe end forming. Holding parameters for the work piece determine the forming stability, deformation caused by plastic flow of metal and accuracy influenced by spring back when it unloaded were examined dimensions of modes and dies, and effects of different machine parameters for metal forming to improve existing processes to achieve better quality and lower costs. In this study, open and reduction on a carbon steel (STKM11A-E-G) seam tube was employed as the main subject. The thickness of pipe is 1.6 mm and the open end was reduced from the 70 mm to 41.8 mm, which reduction rate was around 40%. Therefore, using ABAQUS for the finite element analysis was able to the numerical simulation of various process parameters get relevant process data and set process standards, and verify the results of experimental process. The results showed, the pipe end, when it was reduced, accumulated material and significantly increased its thickness. The amount of interference between grips and pipe for forming had considerable influences on the clamping force and forming process. The clamping force increased with the interference. It is proven to reduce costs can be achieved by improving and adjusting each of process parameters and ensure quality requirements.

Abstract Household pipe-connection constructions of public sewerage system are mostly constructed in the lateral and back alleys. Space factor has a great effect upon the productivity. This research takes the example of household pipe-connection constructions of No.2 Cannal in Kaohsiung. According to the theory that space affects productivity developed by Thomas and Thabet, this research analyzed the space-productivity relationships by collecting data from 15 streets. According to the on-site observation, this research classified the working space into five different construction width, twelve plane types and six kinds of elevated space barriers. The pipe-connection constructions consists of three subtasks, including (1)digging, (2)piping, and (3)formwork. Based on diaries of construction, the average productivity was calculated for different working space. Because of the limited sample of productivity data and working space scope, only the width- productivity effects was analyzed. Finally, by regression analysis, productivity forecast formulas were developed, which can be used to predict the productivity during investigating and planning stages. Results of this research can much improve the planning and scheduling quality in the future.

Abstract:

Scale formation in pipe work and process equipment is inherent to the operation of many chemical processing industries. It results in reduced equipment availability; lost

production and is costly to remove. In the Bayer process, where alumina is chemically extracted from bauxite ore, the specific process step used to recover the alumina from

supersaturated caustic-aluminate solution, referred to as Precipitation, results in significant scale formation on tank walls, process piping and process equipment in contact with the fluid. Operational experience has shown that the rate at which the scaling occurs is, in part, a function of the fluid velocity.

This thesis presents and discusses the experimental observations of an investigation into scale growth rate and fluid velocity not previously conducted at the Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) process plant. The experimental results have identified that gibbsite scale growth is a non-linear function of the flow velocity and viscous sub -layer conditions, and that the rate of deposition, with time, is also exponential.

This research aims to analyze two pipa works: Hou-Yuan Wu’s Story: Reflection on Song of Pipa and Xio-Fong Zhang’s The Song of Pipa. Both of these two works are composed based on the poem Song of Pipa written by the famouse poet of Tung Dynasty, Jv-Yi Bai. Both of these works vividly tell the characters, scenes and emotions. Story: Refelction on Song of Pipa was composed in 1983. The composer Hou-Yuan Wu who encountered the Great Cultural Revolution released his feeling through this musical work. Guqin technique and the special swing rhythem from Chinese opera are applied in this pipa solo. The Song of Pipa was composed by Xio-Fong Zhang in 1978. It was the dark period for the whole art environment after the Great Cultural Revolution. During that time, composers tried to combine music with classical literature. The Song of Pipa was the first large scale work of that time. This musical piece followed the lines of the same titled poem, and the composers also applied two classical pipa works, Xi Yang Xiao Gu and Yue Er Gao. The life background, composing motivation and composing process of these two musicians will be researched and organized. These two musical works will be analyzed to see the structure, tonality, tonic solfa, time signature, and rhythm. The interpretation of these two works will also be discussed.

Pipa is one of honorable solo instruments in China. Pipa via the Silk Road was introduced into China in 420-589 AD, the period roughly equivalent to the Northern and Southern Dynasties of China. Since then, Pipa has actively shown its spirits of creativity and vivaciousness, and that have enabled Pipa to fully demonstrate its exclusive characters in each time. After scouring in time, the development of modern Pipa music, setting on the essences of traditionally four schools that it had inherited from, has now laid much weight on the creativity of composition, on preserving Pipa’s cultural features, and even on the beauty of music of modern time. Chen In is one of honorable Pipa players in modern time, committing to the creativity of Pipa composition. The inspiration and commitment on Pipa music of what he has shown has revealed his philosophies about the inheritance and development of Pipa music. The organic combinations of Pipa’s creativity and playing techniques of what Chen In has done has also accounted to Pipa’s performance for embracing glaring characters. This paper aims to explore Mr. In Chen’s Pipa work, “Mountain Dance”. The paper attempts to comprehend what musical feeling Chen-yin wants to deliver, how Chen In brings original music ingredients into rhythmic development, how Chen applies his techniques to Pipa compositions, and what the features of Chen’s playing techniques. By the studying of “Mountain Dance”, Chen wants to deliver the spirits that full of vitality and of caring of nationalism. The paper enables more Pipa players and Pipa-music lovers to be more understanding of Chen-yin’s Pipa masterpieces.

This study is born from the motivation to empower psychiatric social workers in South Africa with a classification system that compares well to classification systems used by other disciplines in the psychiatric setting. The classification system in question is the Person-in-Environment Classification System (PIE) and therefore this study sets out to investigate and report on the value the PIE might have for psychiatric social work in South Africa. Another objective then is to highlight what problems were experienced in using the PIE which will form the foundation for recommendations on further research and possible adaptations. The first part of this dissertation sets out the motivation and objectives of this study, where the second part gives a thorough description of psychiatric social work, the ecological approach in psychiatric social work, classification systems and the PIE itself. The research process is described whereafter the results of the data are explained. The results are discussed within the framework of three evaluative factors, namely image, applicability and structure which gives an indication of the value the PIE has for psychiatric social work. The conclusion can be drawn from this study that the PIE has definite value in all three evaluative factors. It can be concluded that the PIE can serve as an empowering tool in establishing and defining psychiatric social work's unique contribution to South African psychiatry.

Merithew, Shawn Stanton. "Theological tenets of the evangelistic ministry of John Piper during the years 1980--2002." Thesis, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10392/289.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation delineates the theological tenets of John Piper's evangelistic ministry at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis. In addition to his basic conservative, evangelical presuppositions, there are four theological tenets that drive the evangelistic ministry of John Piper: the sovereignty and supremacy of God, the depraved affections of man, conversion as the creation of a Christian Hedonist, and the glorifying witness of the church. Chapter 1 addresses Piper's role in modern evangelicalism as a recovery theologian. He is one of several pastors and authors calling evangelicals to recover the god-centered theology of the reformers. Piper's unique perspective of Christian Hedonism is his prescribed vehicle for that recovery. The theology of evangelism springing from this perspective is particularly valuable as a remedy for the atheological pragmatism currently driving so many evangelical churches. Chapter 2 is biographical in nature, exploring Piper's life and theological development. In addition to describing the experiences of his conversion and call to ministry, this chapter details the pivotal awakening he experienced at Fuller Seminary that led to the development of Christian Hedonism and his subsequent espousal of Calvinism. This chapter also recounts the theological developments Piper has experienced during his pastorate, including the missiological awakening that took place at Bethlehem Baptist Church during the mid 1980s. Chapter 3 then delineates the four theological tenets and the sub-points that embody the evangelistic aspects of each tenet. His published writings are the primary sources for this chapter, and the material reflects his affinity for Edwards and his God-centered hermeneutic. Chapter 4 examines five facets of Piper's ministry to prove that the theological tenets delineated in chapter three do indeed define and drive the evangelistic ministries of Bethlehem Baptist Church. Preaching, prayer, discipleship, outreach (local and global), and Piper's writing ministry are each examined to show the foundational presence of the four tenets in the evangelistic aspects of each ministry. Chapter 5 closes the dissertation by summarizing the material presented in chapters three and four. The final section of this fifth chapter briefly addresses the strengths and weaknesses of Piper's theology of evangelism and Bethlehem's evangelistic ministries.

The pipa art has its lasting position through time in Chinese history. Its rich repertories, complicated techniques, unique timbre, multiple performing forms and the distinguishing charm all make pipa regarded as one of most expressive instruments among the world’s plucked instruments. Tian-hua Liu and Yan-jun Hua were national musicians born in the same period. The former, as an intellectual, was deeply influenced by the spirit of the May Fourth Movement, and the latter, a folk artist, was surrounded with Jiangnan folk music since his childhood. Pipa pieces composed by the two both play a leading and important role during the progress of modern pipa music. The study started from probing into Tian-hua Liu’s and Yan-jun Hua’s musical backgrounds through examining the social background of their age. Next, it discussed the composing backgrounds and musical traits within Liu and Hua’s six pieces for pipa. Third, based on the former researches, the author made a comparison between Liu and Hua in the following chapter. Finally, in the conclusion, it brought up the meaning and influences of the two’s compositions on the progress of modern pipa music. Through the process of researching, the author tried to get a fuller comprehension of Tian-hua Liu’s and Yan-jun Hua’s pipa works. It is expected be a future reference for pipa performers while interpreting as well as studying, and a reference for composers concerning musical contents and composing techniques of modern pipa work in early period. Last but not least, the research result is hoped to provide a dedication for the future development of pipa music.

Luo Yong-hui, an outstanding composer, produces a huge amount of modern pipa music as a full-time musician. He has won awards in several composition competitions, and is adept at mixing his works with oriental culture, spirit, and thoughts, merging into a unique artistic style. Luo’s pieces have spread widely in the cross-strait area these years, and he constantly cooperates with well-known pipa virtuoso Wong Chi-ching and Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. His works are mostly chosen as assigned songs in important music competitions. Among them, A Thousand Sweeps and Flowing Fancies both got the CASH Golden Sail Music Awards, proclaiming Luo’s merit in modern pipa music and the inquirablility in his pieces. Subjects in this study involve two pipa music pieces of Luo Yong-hui—A Thousand Sweeps and Flowing Fancies, written based on “cursive script”, a style of Chinese calligraphy. Through research methods, including music analysis, interview, comparative analysis, media observation, etc., it is to be understood that how the composer transfers visual art—“calligraphy” to auditory art—pipa music, and how interview data are constructed for future performers’ reference when interpreting the music. Lastly, distinctions are compared between these two pieces in their music style, structure, and artistic feature.

Marais, Andre. "Increased-rate stability studies for St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum), Ginkgo biloba and Kava Kava (Piper methysticum) under unfavourable environmental conditions." Diss., 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/23083.

Abstract:
This was a chemical laboratory study. The main focus was to evaluate the chemical stability of Hypericum perforatum (St John's wort), Ginkgo biloba and Piper methysticum (Kava Kava) under unfavourable environmental conditions. Different dosage forms representing the same amount of active ingredients for each were used. Some of the dosage forms were self manufactured according to Good Manufacturing Practice. Samples of the dried powder of each plant was also exposed to a series of gamma¬radiation. Acetone was used as an extractant for all three plants, after evaluating and discarding the extraction method stipulated in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia. Identification of the different plants were carried out by means of Thin Layer Chromatography. The in-house developed mobile phases EMW, BEA and CEF, showed better separation and visibility compared to the mobile phases used in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia. The plates were sprayed with either vanillin or p-anisaldehide for optimal visualization of the separated compounds. After the specified period of 6-months, comparative TLC was performed on all samples. This was achieved for each plant by applying all samples stored at a specific condition i.e.25°C, on the same plate. The samples were stored at low temperature after exposure to the specific time interval. Quantitative analysis was performed by spectrophotometry, and high pressure liquid chromatography. The data obtained from these analytical methods, were used to evaluate the relative chemical stability of each dosage form. The relationship between the quantitative data and the qualitative changes in the TLC fingerprints, were compared, hoping to achieve a common pattern relating to the stability. The order of the reaction as well as the reaction rate constant (k) for each dosage form was calculated, except for kava kava. The shelf-life (too) was calculated using the analyzed data obtained by spectrophotometry or HPLC. The relevance of conventional pharmaceutical calculations in the prediction of shelf-life, by means of accelerated stability tests, was investigated for the possible application to herbal products. The effects of gamma radiation on the degradation of the chemical compounds present in each plant, was evaluated. After an evaluation of all the relevant data, it seemed that the tablet-dosage forms were equally effective regarding stability, compared to the capsules. Liquid extracts appeared to be less stable than the extract capsules. The extract capsules seemed to degrade more rapidly than the herbal tablets or herbal capsules. Exposure to low dose radiation (4.4 kGy) did not seem to have an influence on the stability. It was evident that some herbs were more sensitive to sunlight or heat than others. In general, all three of the chosen plants seemed to be relatively stable if stored in the specified conditions. It seemed valid for the shelf-life to be expressed as two years.

The purpose of this study is about shield facilities and construction process, construction practices used for the further implementation of construction automation management, to plan a reasonable schedule, reasonable cost, and the works periodic, with the hope of increasing the domestic construction technology and construction of shield quality to eliminate unnecessary disputes and waste. This study aims at the Central Taiwan Science Park Houli Park and Seven Star Park, in the discharge pipe project to carry out the construction of shield tunnel data collection. Difficulties encountered during construction of the models are different, the similarities and differences between facility design, funding and other spending priorities are different in the case in the normal cost of the construction, but for special situations encountered such natural disasters are abnormal, so they aren’t included in the analysis of the project, but the risk factors of the construction must be considered. Open shield machine construction and closed shield machine has great difference in the construction method. Open shield machine has good self-sustaining construction geology, mining robot operation by human and artificial Drilling handle tunneling, as the main force driving by human; closed shield machine’s face plate is driven by human action, cutting the face plate processing gravel excavation, as the main force drives the mechanical force. Because Taichung has the most geological layer of gravel-based, good, hard, and the uniaxial compressive strength is also higher. Because of that the construction equipments’ digging edge are rather attrite more than other machinery and equipments. Excavation of the actual replacement of the original blade length is shorter than expected change. Information and data will be recorded in the results of statistical data, by organize, analyze, comparing it, it can provide the gravel layer on the shield construction and designers reference in the future. After this research experience in the construction of the shield layer of gravel construction case, I got many great experiences, for example: from which to gain valuable construction experience and records, to provide domestic pipeline construction in gravel layer shield construction of the reference. Gravel layer in the absence of groundwater areas, mining machinery, mining-type semi-shield machines are for driving mirror position on the directly and immediately. Effective construction management are used to control the cost of the construction period; gravel layer in high groundwater areas, potential mining closed shield machine is more feasible, but if not followed by the particle size of gravel, hard, high compressive strength and the core, digging surfacing edge conditions will not be good, Inconsistent with the blade from the replacement of maintenance, construction is difficult to control, time costs are even more difficult. Construction cost of a shield to 1.0 to 1.2 km are the best, the ones under the range are a waste of money. Equipment to the track from the shield machine, transmission line and pits excavated outside the lifting equipment, etc. are all necessary facilities, similar to prices in this market. it will also infect the cost of a tunneling progress, human resources and equipment maintenance. Proposed pipeline construction practices shield construction update suggestions to solve the problem of pipeline construction by shield more effectively, analyzing the ratio between cost and gravel is the main goal and purpose of this study.
