Abstract:
Pacific oyster Magallana gigas (Thunberg, 1793) is an important commercial species of the Black Sea coast of Russia. Black Sea is favorable for the development of regional mariculture, but the existing biotic factors may lead to damage to an oyster farm. In particular, boring sponge Pione vastifica (Hancock, 1849). Boring sponges are a serious problem for mariculture farms, because the affected mussels are withdrawn from trade, which entails economic losses. In this work, the effect of boring sponges on the functional state of hemocytes (the ability to produce reactive oxygen species - ROS and the membrane potential of mitochondria) and the antioxidant status of the mantle of the Pacific oyster were studied. The membrane potential of mitochondria was significantly inhibited in the hemocytes of mollusks affected by P. vastifica. In addition, the hemocytes of “infected” oysters were characterized by a higher level of ROS production compared to the group of “healthy" oysters. The increase in ROS was not accompanied by an increase in catalase activity. The absence of an increase in catalase activity against the background of excessive ROS production can lead to various physiological and metabolic disorders and a decrease in the growth rate of mollusks. The present study contributes to the expansion of understanding about the influence of the drilling sponge (P. vastifica) on the functional state of a common object of regional mariculture – the Pacific oyster (M. gigas).

Abstract:
A new species of the clionaid genus Pione is described from the south-western Atlantic in Argentine waters. Pione angelae sp. nov. is the first record of the genus from southern South America. It occurs on shells of Olivancillaria urceus and Buccinanops monilifer, two common gastropods living off Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina (38°01′41″S 57°31′07″W) that are inhabited by the hermit crab Loxopagurus loxochelis. Pione angelae sp. nov. is visible on the shell surfaces as circular papillar perforations of 312 μm on average with regular diameters. They lead directly into interconnected chambers from both sides of the shell. The chambers form well-defined galleries in dense substratum. Straight tylostyles in two size-classes (defined by their length: width ratio) occur: 158.6 μm length×2.1 μm width and 185.0×4.5 μm, with spherical heads. Microscleres are more common than tylostyles, with microspined acanthoxeas of 91 μm length, slightly bent in the centre, as well as spirasters of 12 μm length with spines more concentrated on the crests of the spirals; rarely they are straight (microrhabd like). The present samples are compared to similar valid species of the same genus and it is concluded that they represent a new species.

Full text
Abstract:
The quality of ‘Pione’ grapes was evaluated during passive and active modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) storage. In the passive MAP study, ‘Pione’ grapes were packaged in two types of films with an oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of either 440 mL/m2/d/atm (low OTR) or 1250 mL/m2/d/atm (high OTR) and stored at 25 °C or 10 °C. When the CO2 concentration in low and high-OTR films stored at 25 °C reached 10% and 3%, respectively, on day 2, grape berries showed lower bacterial counts in the low-OTR films than in the high-OTR films. At 10 °C, the packages approached an equilibrium of 12% CO2 in low-OTR films and 7% CO2 in high-OTR films during 8 days of storage, and no difference was observed in the bacterial counts between the two films. In an active MAP study, ‘Pione’ grapes were stored in low-OTR (440 mL/m2/d/atm) and high-OTR (1170 mL/m2/d/atm) films flushed with air or high CO2 (10%, 20%, and 30%) at 10 °C for 8 days. The CO2 concentration in active MAP with low-OTR films reached approximately 20% by the end of storage, while that with high-OTR films approached an equilibrium of 10% CO2 after 4 days of storage. The bacterial counts remained below the limit of detection until 4 days of storage in active MAP with high-OTR films. Although the fungal counts of berries were non-detectable or below the limit of detection in all active MAPs, Alternaria and Candida fungi and Chryseobacterium and Cutibacterium bacteria were found in the berries stored in active MAP. The firmness, soluble solid content, and surface color of the berries were not affected, regardless of the film type, in both passive and active MAP, and rachis browning due to high-CO2 injury was not observed in any samples in active MAP. These results indicate that passive MAP with low-OTR films or active MAP of 10–20% CO2 with high-OTR films at 10 °C were the optimum packing systems for ‘Pione’ grapes to control the physical and microbiological quality without high-CO2 injury, such as rachis browning.

Abstract:
In order to obtain a significant level of parsley yield in the Right-Bank Forest-Steppe of Ukraine, it is necessary to select varieties in accordance with soil and climatic conditions of cultivation. The comparative estimation of productivity of grades of parsley of sheet foreign selection in the specified conditions is carried out. The results of phenological observations of plant development, their biometric parameters depending on the genetic features are presented. The possibility of growing the studied varieties of leaf parsley of foreign selection in the conditions of the Right-Bank Forest-Steppe of Ukraine has been established. From the presence of mass shoots to the last harvest, the studied varieties had a growing season of 128–155 days. The first harvest was carried out 61–74 days after the mass germination. Aromatic and Vega varieties proved to be faster growing. The leaf mass of Orpheus and Fest was slightly slower. Vega and Orpheus plants had the lowest height – 23.6 cm and 25.4 cm, respectively. The next to increase the height of the leaf rosette was the Fest variety, whose plants reached 33.9 cm. The plants of the Pione variety were 35.1 cm high. The highest plant height in the experiment was Argon and Aromatnaya – 36.2 cm and 36.4 cm, respectively. Vega and Orpheus plants had the lowest productivity – 114 g and 160 g, respectively. The next variety as the productivity of the plant increased was the variety Argon with an index of 195 g. The plants of the control variety Aromatnaya had a productivity of 227 g. The plants of the varieties Fest and Pione had the highest productivity – 253 g and 255 g, respectively. The total yield of parsley leaf mass in the experiment averaged 5.01–10.20 kg/m2. Vega was the lowest and Fest and Pione the lowest.

Full text
Abstract:
The coloration of grape berries depends on the anthocyanin synthesis during maturation. The quality of berries is often decreased due to the poor color development when berries are grown under unfavorable environments and/or inadequate internal factors are involved. It has been well-known that the level of ABA at ripening is closely associated with anthocyanin synthesis; thus, the external application of ABA results in the increase of anthocyanin content even in berries grown under favorable conditions. However, the agricultural use of natural ABA is not possible because of high prices. This experiment was conducted to study the potential of STC-4771 as a substitute for ABA. The effect of STC-4771 was studied in `Kyoho', `Pione', and `Delaware' grapes. Chemicals were applied when ≈10% of berries in a cluster were colored. In `Kyoho', anthocyanin synthesis was enhanced at a concentration of 100 mg/L and there was a trend in color enhancement in `Pione', regardless of treatment concentration, between 10 to 40 mg/L. However, no clear effect was found in `Delaware' at 50 to 100 mg/L. In an in vitro experiment, anthocyanin was only increased when an adequate amount of sucrose (0.6 m) was added in the incubation medium under light. Natural ABA effectively increased the anthocyanin content of berry segments even under shading condition through four bagging materials, but no effect was confirmed in STC treatment.

Abstract:
Excavating sponges are one of the main groups of bioeroders in coral reefs. Their diversity has been thoroughly studied in some regions: in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and the Indo-Pacific, including the Mexican Pacific. However, there is a lack of information from the Pacific of Central America, with only a few records from Panama and Costa Rica. This study provides additional distributional records and taxonomic descriptions of species collected between 2011 and 2016 at nine localities along the Pacific coast of El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. A total of fourteen species of excavating sponges from three orders, three families, and five genera are considered valid in this area. Nine are new records for Central America, six are new records for El Salvador, three are new records for Nicaragua and eleven are new records for Costa Rica. The species collected from Panama were already recorded before. The species here described are Cliona amplicavata, Cliona californiana, Cliona euryphylle, Cliona microstrongylata, Cliona aff. mucronata, Cliona pocillopora, Cliona tropicalis, Cliona vermifera, Cliothosa tylostrongylata, Pione cf. carpenteri, Pione mazatlanensis, Thoosa calpulli, Thoosa mismalolli and Siphonodictyon crypticum. We also reviewed the literature related to excavating sponges from Central America, and the taxonomic status of respective species was updated. We provide a faunistic record of 14 excavating sponge species for Central America. Our data are expected to be useful for management and conservation purposes.

Abstract:
A new mechanism of demosponge spicule formation was recognized during taxonomic studies of bioeroding sponges (Porifera: Demospongiae: Clionidae). To date different spicule types have been explained by matching structures to their organic matrix, the axial thread. Bulbous structures, however, do not have an organic counterpart. Immature spicules of Cliona tinctoria and Pione caesia have irregular, rough heads. Higher magnification during scanning electron microscopy shows that silica granules are deposited regionally to form bulbs. Later silica secretion smoothens the bulb surface. Silica deposition in form of granules rather than in layers appears to be a structuring tool in tylostyles.

Abstract:
Free and conjugated abscisic acid (ABA), anthocyanin and sugar concentrations were investigated in the skin of seedless `Pione' grapes (Vitis spp) treated with gibberellic acid (GA) and seeded `Pione' grapes. Seeded fruit were firmer than seedless fruit, until 53 days after full bloom (DAFB). The firmness of seeded fruit decreased dramatically between 43 and 53 DAFB. Anthocyanin concentrations increased in both types of fruit after 53 DAFB, but the concentration in seeded fruit was higher than in seedless fruit. Sugar concentration in the skin was higher in seedless than in seeded fruit prior to 53 DAFB, but at 80 DAFB sugar concentration was higher in the seeded fruit. ABA (free and conjugated forms) concentration in the skin showed a general increase towards harvest (80 DAFB). Skin ABA was higher in seeded than seedless fruit. After cis, trans-ABA (s-ABA) in the skin reached a maximum on 62 or 71 DAFB, its level decreased in both seeded and seedless fruit. The levels of trans, trans-ABA (t-ABA) and conjugated forms in both types of fruit failed to increase or increased only marginally after 62 or 71 DAFB. Free and conjugated ABA in the seed increased with DAFB until harvest. These results suggest that although maturation was promoted initially in the GA-treated seedless fruit, after 53 DAFB it was slowed relative to the seeded fruit. Enhanced maturation during the later stages of development of seeded fruit could be attributed to an increase in ABA concentration in the skin and the seed. These results also demonstrate that s-ABA is not metabolized in the skin to t-ABA and conjugated forms.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Marine sponges are a host of different symbiotic groups of bacteria playing crucial roles in the protection and survival of marine sponges. Marine symbiotic bacteria from sponges are promising sources of bioactive chemicals and are increasingly being investigated. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to analyze total compounds from active symbiotic bacterial strain from sponge, Pione vastifica. Potential bacterial strain EA276 previously isolated from P. vastifica and was identified as Spongiobacter sp. Among 57 isolates, only 42% exhibited antagonistic activity. Four major classes of bacteria were reported previously where γ-Proteobacteria, was the dominant class. From these active antagonistic bacterial isolates, a potential bacterial strain Spongiobacter sp. EA276 was selected, and total metabolites were identified using GC and LC-MS analyses. Using LC-MS analysis bioactive compounds Dichlorphenamide, Amifloxacin and Carbenicillin are identified in both positive and negative mode. Plant growth hormones, Indole-3-acetic acid and Methyl jasmonate were identified using GC-MS analysis from culture extract of strain Spongiobacter sp. EA276. Our results highlighted the significance of marine flora inhabiting sponges from the Red Sea as potential source of bioactive compounds and plant growth hormones of biological and agricultural significance.

Abstract:
Antiproton [Formula: see text], on annihilation with a nucleon in a complex nucleus of emulsion emits charged pions which are about 20% less than that observed in an antiproton annihilation on a free nucleon. Predominant reduction takes place for the pions in the energy range of 140 MeV. This reduction of charged pion multiplicity and the corresponding pion energy range for which such reduction takes place have been explained on the basis of isobar model of pion absorption. The energy and the opening angle distributions of the protons resulting from absorption of such pions were measured and were fitted with those from the Monte Carlo calculations based on the isobar model. Good agreement in each case further supports the isobar model of pion absorption. (Nuclear reaction ([Formula: see text], emulsion), pion absorption in complex nuclei, isobar model)

Abstract:
Coral reef community composition, function, and resilience have been altered by natural and anthropogenic stressors. Future anthropogenic ocean and coastal acidification (together termed “acidification”) may exacerbate this reef degradation. Accurately predicting reef resilience requires an understanding of not only direct impacts of acidification on marine organisms but also indirect effects on species interactions that influence community composition and reef ecosystem functions. In this 28-day experiment, we assessed the effect of acidification on coral–algal, coral–sponge, and algal–sponge interactions. We quantified growth of corals (Siderastrea radians), fleshy macroalgae (Dictyota spp.), and sponges (Pione lampa) that were exposed to local summer ambient (603 μatm) or elevated (1105 μatm) pCO2 seawater. These species are common to hard-bottom communities, including shallow reefs, in the Florida Keys. Each individual was maintained in isolation or paired with another organism. Coral growth (net calcification) was similar across seawater pCO2 and interaction treatments. Fleshy macroalgae had increased biomass when paired with a sponge but lost biomass when growing in isolation or paired with coral. Sponges grew more volumetrically in the elevated seawater pCO2 treatment (i.e., under acidification conditions). Although these results are limited in temporal and spatial scales due to the experimental design, they do lend support to the hypothesis that acidification may facilitate a shift towards increased sponge and macroalgae abundance by directly benefiting sponge growth which in turn may provide more dissolved inorganic nitrogen to macroalgae in the Florida Keys.

Abstract:
The relatively shallow coldwater coral reefs growing off the eastern coast of Mingulay, north-west Scotland, are excavated by five sponge species, three of which, Alectona millari, Pione vastifica and Cliona lobata, were known previously from Scottish waters. The other two species are new to Scotland and Great Britain. One species is here described as new to science: Cliona caledoniae sp. nov. The species shows a superficial resemblance in colour (orange) and spiculation (possession of tylostyles and knobby microscleres) to Cliothosa hancocki described disjunctly from the Pacific Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, but it differs clearly in lacking the characteristic Cliothosa amphiasters with branching rays. The Scottish species only possesses peculiar thick-rayed streptasters, which at first glance appear rather similar to the second microsclere type reported for Cliothosa hancocki, knobby-rayed amphiasters. However, the majority of the microscleres in the Mingulay species appear to be genuine spirasters (not amphiasters), and exhaustive search for true amphiasters, branching or otherwise, was in vain. The new species is extensively illustrated. Furthermore, we also report the first occurrence in British waters of Spiroxya levispira, originally described from Azorean deep waters, and subsequently reported from Madeira and several Mediterranean localities. It was found to occur not uncommonly in the Mingulay reefs, and additionally also in reefs of the Rockall Bank, west of Ireland. The spicular characters generally match those of the southern locations. The newly recorded species is described and amply illustrated.

Abstract:
We have recently studied in the delta-resonance–nucleon-hole model the dependence of the pion spectral function in hot dense asymmetric nuclear matter on the charge of the pion due to the pion p-wave interaction in nuclear medium. In a thermal model, this isospin-dependent effect enhances the ratio of negatively charged to positively charged pions in neutron-rich nuclear matter, and the effect is comparable to that due to the uncertainties in the theoretically predicted stiffness of nuclear symmetry energy at high densities. This effect is, however, reversed if we also take into account the s-wave interaction of the pion in nuclear medium as given by chiral perturbation theory, resulting instead in a slightly reduced ratio of negatively charged to positively charged pions. Relevance of our results to the determination of the nuclear symmetry energy from the ratio of negatively to positively charged pions produced in heavy ion collisions is discussed.

Abstract:
We report on a detailed investigation of four-body pp → ppπ+π- and [Formula: see text] reactions which constitute an irreducible background to three-body processes pp → ppM, where M is a broad resonance in the π+π- channel, e.g. M = σ, ρ0, f0(980), f2(1275), f0(1500). We include double-diffractive contribution (both pomeron and reggeon exchanges) as well as the pion-pion rescattering contributions. The first process dominates at higher energies and small pion-pion invariant masses while the second becomes important at lower energies and higher pion-pion invariant masses. We compare our results with the experimental data. We make predictions for future experiments at PANDA, RHIC, Tevatron and LHC energies. The two-dimensional distribution in rapidity space of pions (yπ+, yπ-) is particularly interesting. The higher the incident energy, the higher preference for the same-hemisphere emission of pions. The processes considered constitute a sizeable contribution to the total nucleon-nucleon cross section as well as to pion inclusive cross section.

Abstract:
Theoretical calculations have been done for the coherent production of pions in the exclusive reaction 12C + 12 C → 12 C (15.11 MeV) + 12C + π0 at 100 and 250 MeV/nucleon. An analysis is made on how three-body kinematics and other energy dependencies affect the various factors that enter the calculation for the pion differential cross section. Momentum and momentum-transfer diagrams are constructed that show pictorially how projectile- and target-generated pions differ in their intermediate states, even though they lead to the same final states. It is shown how three-body kinematics affect the exchange-process amplitudes that account for projectile- and target-generated pions. Also, the energy dependencies found in the delta width and phase-space factors are assessed as to their relative importance. Momentum robbing and kickback effects to the final-state nuclei from the produced pion are discussed. These effects are shown to give an asymmetry in the pion angular distribution. The study of three-body kinematics and its associated energy dependencies under the Born approximation is considered to be an important first step in the understanding of coherent pion production in heavy-ion collisions, before the complicating features of absorption and distortion are introduced. Even though the pion is much lighter than either of the two equal-mass, final-state nuclei, observable asymmetries are seen in the pion angular distribution that are caused by the produced pion.

Abstract:
Abstract The analysis of pion production in neutrino-nucleus scattering is crucial to quantify the effect of final state interactions (FSI) in the energy regime of DUNE and other long-baseline neutrino experiments since FSI modify the number of pions that emerge in the final state as compared to the number of pions produced in the initial (primary) state. Not only the number of pions but also their charge gets changed due to the prevailing FSI effects. In the present work, we will study the effect of FSI on pions after their production at the initial neutrino-nucleus interaction vertex using two different Monte Carlo (MC) simulation tools viz. GENIE (version: 3.0.6) and NuWro (version: 19.2.2). Considering the DUNE experimental set-up, we observe pion production in νµ and 40 Ar nucleus interactions for an event sample of 1 million for each generator. We find that there are some differences in the pion number observed in the primary and final states of two generators and that the differences are above statistical fluctuations. We observe that GENIE (version: 3.0.6) is more responsive (less transparent) to absorption and charge exchange processes as compared to NuWro (version: 19.2.2).

Abstract:
In order to study the role of pions and clustering phenomena in nuclei, two experiments have been performed using the AGOR accelerator facility. In collisions of two nuclei a pion and a fused nucleus were produced. The examined reactions were 4He(3He, π0)7Be and 6Li(4He, π0)10B at beam energies about 10 MeV above the coherent pion production threshold (256 MeV and 236.4 MeV, respectively). Since the available energy is well below the pion production threshold in an elementary nucleon-nucleon process, a highly coherent mechanism is needed. We identified the reaction by measuring the fused system in the magnetic spectrometer and the produced neutral pions in the Plastic Ball detection system with large acceptance. Our experimental setup provided the exclusive cross sections by identifying all products in overdetermined kinematics. Here we present the preliminary results of the analysis for the second reaction. Angular distribution of neutral pions will be discussed.

This paper discusses the parity of charged pions. It is shown that the original determination of the parity of the negatively charged pion using the capture of negatively charged pions in deuterium to form two neutrons is not conclusive if the pion has a complex substructure. It is demonstrated that this experiment is compatible with the mixed-parity nature of the π- arising in a recent composite model. A major consequence of this is that CP may be conserved in the [Formula: see text] system.

Pion and kaon dissociation in a medium of hot quark matter is studied in the Nambu–Jona-Lasinio model. The decay widths of pion and kaon are found to be large but finite at temperatures much higher than the so-called critical temperature of chiral or deconfinement transition, kaon decay width being larger. Consequently, pions and even kaons (with a lower density compared to pions) should coexist with quarks and gluons at such high temperatures. The implication of the above result in the study of quark–gluon plasma is discussed.

We investigate the pion photoproduction reaction γN→γNπ as a probe of pion electromagnetic polarizability. This reaction had been proposed as having the potential to resolve the long standing discrepancy between measurements of pion polarizabilities and the predictions of Chiral Perturbation Theory. We have carried out a series of calculations of ratios of substructure — related to background contributions for energies below the Δ resonance — but have to report that the largest values are found in the high-energy tail of the photon spectrum and that these are of the order of 0.1% for charged pions and 1% for neutral pions. We conclude that these sensitivities are not yet accessible experimentally, and that this regime of energy should be excluded from current consideration.
