Lau, Ling-yee Liny, and 劉令始. "Wind and water of two villages : investigating a possible connection between fungshui and prosperity of two villages in Ping Shan : the case of Hang Tau Tsuen and Hang Mei Tsuen." Abstract:
As someone who have studied Fungshui and offers Fungshui advice, I am aware that the collective success of a village is often qualified, traditionally, by the number of wealthy landlords, accomplished scholars, illustrious officials, male offspring, and long-life people. In modern times, the attribution to good Fungshui in a village is similar: by the number of rich businessmen and landowners, accomplished professionals, high-ranking government officials and high-profile celebrities. The emphasis is still on men, even though there are more clanswomen and many successful clanswomen. Based on this notion of attributing the success of clansmen to good Fungshui, I wonder if this could provide a means of measuring how “good” is good Fungshui of a village. The Tang clan is one of the five great clans (i.e. Tang, Hau (侯), Pang (彭), Liu (廖) and Man (文)) residing in Hong Kong. Since the migration and settlement of the family to Ping Shan in the 12th Century by the 92nd generation ancestor Tang Yuen-ching (鄧元禎) with his son Tang Chung-kwong (alias Tang Man-lei) (鄧從光, 字萬里), the Tang clan of Ping Shan has been evolved for more than 800 years with a long period of economic prosperity and social achievements. Many villagers in Ping Shan attribute this success to good Fungshui in and around the villages. In what ways does Fungshui contribute to the economic and social success in villages in Ping Shan? How can this seemingly unmeasurable Fungshui qualification of success in Ping Shan be measured in more concrete terms? These are the research questions for this dissertation. This is an investigative research into the land and the people of villages in Ping Shan, with focus on tracing notable clansmen from past to present as a measure of the reputed good Fungshui of the land. It is with my interest in heritage and my lifelong dedication to the understanding of Fungshui that I attempt this unconventional research in making a connection between two pedagogies – the intangible cultural heritage of Fungshui and the cultural landscape of Ping Shan. The place Ping Shan, after all, is where I grew up, and this is a place to which I have strong emotional attachment. As such, I feel obligated to find out more about Ping Shan. I did not know the outcome of the research, and my expectation was that even if I did not find the connection, I would at least find out more about the history of the people and the geography of the place and contribute towards the understanding of the cultural landscape of two villages in Ping Shan.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
International Baccalaureate (IB) Curriculum is adopted by more and more international schools and direct-subsidy schools in Hong Kong. At the same time, more and more non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students choose to study Chinese Language as a second language in IB curriculum. However, the vocabulary learning is one of the difficulties when they learn Chinese. The Education Bureau has published ‘Consultation Paper on Developing a “Supplementary Guide to the Chinese Language Curriculum for Non-Chinese Speaking Students” ’ and points out those NCS students encounter difficulties in learning Chinese graphemes, tones, vocabulary, etc. These difficulties are related to morpheme. Many researchers have conducted to study on relationship between morphological awareness and lexical knowledge. This dissertation aims to study on the relationship between morphological awareness and lexical ability of IB Middle Year Programme (MYP) students in Hong Kong. This is a quantitative research. Data collection includes two tests of the morphological awareness and lexical ability paper-pencil tests and one summative unit test of Chinese Language subject in a school. IB MYP students of two classes participated in this study and their morphological awareness and lexical ability were tested and analyzed by the statistical analysis software. The objectives of the study are: (1) Analysis on the types of lexicon errors of IB MYP students in Hong Kong; (2) Analysis on the relationship between morphological awareness and lexical ability of IB MYP students in Hong Kong; (3) Suggestions on developing of morphological awareness in learning Chinese Language as a second language. The results find that most of the lexicon errors were related to the tones and radical components of Chinese character, it is suggested to develop the homophone awareness and the orthographic awareness of Chinese character to reduce the lexicon errors. The morphological awareness of students has influence on student’s lexical ability. The homophone awareness has a closer relationship with lexical ability. The morphological awareness of the mental lexicon has an influence on the amount of mental lexicon and the ability of using lexicon. It is suggested to develop the morphological awareness of students in teaching Chinese as a second language to further study the relationship between the development of morphological awareness and mental lexicon in the future.

This thesis is composed of five chapters. The first chapter is ‘Preface’-- I take the life stories of my grand mother‚my mother and myself as the starting point. Under the tract of female race’s tough vitality, I try to connect life stories of nameless female race and fix a self- position. The second chapter is the theoretical background of the thesis, I apply the viewpoint of ‘culture’ to explore how the ‘globalization’ and ‘localization’ influence the thoughts of creation. I understand the possibility of artificial manipulation in the process of creating knowledge. Furthermore, I apply the theory of ‘yoga’ to explore the certainty of self under female’s value inspired by ‘goddess belief’, ‘life multiplication’, ‘familial value’. In the third chapter, I interpret my artworks with the concepts of ‘color of cotton prints’, ‘meaning of figure’, ‘touch of the material, ‘technique of needlework’ and ‘space installation’. The fourth chapter is the analyses of my artworks which interpret female experiences with five topics during the period of graduate school. The subjects of the five topics are ‘Taiwan’s women’, ‘mother and child’, ‘new interpretation of myth’, ‘strong woman’ and ‘creation of goddess’. The fifth chapter is the conclusion. I understand the life of a female and the others are intertwined together via creation. Therefore, I realize every woman possesses her own manner. We can check ourselves afresh whether to overemphasize the image of ‘the strong person’ under the influence of mother’s image and the need of work management. We can understand that no one can be a strong man forever through deep introspection, for everyone needs love of the others to soothe him/her. That is the same with the natural law: “when trees accept spring rain, then the flowers blossom”. Furthermore, I discuss the ‘image of goddess is the self projection of human beings’. Nowadays, the goddess can transform into various appearances and is the reflect of real lives-- the various roles of women are juxtaposed and in drifting state.

The work aims to explore the effect of the increasing tension stress on the regular schedule of people''s life with the fast life pace in the modern society. The prosperity of the Internet due to the ever-changing technologies facilitates the interpersonal communication, but also brings about the interpersonal alienation. The work was created on the basis of the busy life, recording the past memory influenced by the busy status. I created the plot in the private space, which was recorded into a video as the media. Chapter 1 discusses the current work created by the writer, including the orientation of the creative thinking and the reason of the changing materials during these years. Chapter 2 proposes the topic, that is, the personal anxiety arrives under the working pressure and stress. Apart from discussing the memory, consciousness and the illnesses of the modern society, the introduction of video art is also included. Chapter 3 further discusses the work and the sequence of the artist''s works. People are adapted to the narrow living space due to the development of Internet, which has brought about the interpersonal alienation. Chapter 4 describes that through post-production, the video art can transfer the fabled issues into reality. Chapter 5 takes the works in the solo exhibition as the topic to respond to the memory, consciousness and the illnesses of the society. Keywords:Memory、Consciousness、 Alienation、 Video Art

This thesis discusses the settlement development and resources exploitation of Ping-shi region, New Taipei City, Taiwan. Ping-Shi region is located in the Eastern hills of Taipei Basin, and is, geologically, famous for having the coal seam. The pioneers moved into Ping-Shi region in the Qing Dynasty Rule and started land exploitation; however, the coal was not exploited until the Japanese Rule. This thesis focuses on the changes of settlement pattern and social organization before and after the exploitation of Mining the Coal. Pioneers moved into Ping-shi region at least before 1820. They made a living by utilizing the land. People from different places were integrated through religion, ancestor worship and exploitation system. A stable settlement pattern was thus formed. Coal mining started in 1918. Many residents changed their living from “agriculture only” to “half-agriculture and half-mining;” lots of foreigners also came because of work opportunities. Nevertheless, because of the unstable and limited characteristics of Coal resources, settlement pattern in this period were not stable: foreigners moved within the region or between regions, and with the fade of Coal resource, most of the foreigners moved out; only the old-timers left. In conclusion, the exploitation of different kinds of resources - renewable or nonrenewable - strongly influenced the settlement pattern in Ping-Shi region. Land resource, a renewable resource, enables residents to have a stable society. In contrast, Coal resource, a nonrenewable resource, makes the region an unstable society.
