Abstract:

Abstract:
Statement of the problem. The twentieth century marked an increased interest in polyphonic music. The geography of polyphonic works for piano expanded significantly and a creative development of many Chinese composers, writing polyphonic piano pieces, took place. Today, polyphonic pieces make up a significant part of the piano repertoire in China, but they are little studied by musicologists and performers. The objective of this study – to reveal the contribution of Chinese composers to the creation of polyphonic piano repertoire of the XX – early XXI century. Analysis of the research and publications on the theme. А large number of modern authors study polyphony from the point of physical and mathematical research methods (Igarashi, Yu. & Ito, Masashi & Ito, Akinori, 2013; Weiwei, Zhang & Zhe, Chen, & Fuliang, Yin, 2016; Li, Xiaoquan et al. others, 2018). This approach does not reveal the factual musical component of polyphonic genres. In the 20th century, musicologists explored polyphony in musical folklore (Wiant, 1936; Fan Zuyin, 2004; Li Hong, 2015) and in professional Chinese composing (Sun Wei-bo, 2006, Winzenburg, 2018). The scientific novelty. This article studies the role of Chinese composers in the development of the world polyphonic piano repertoire of the XX – early XXI century. The methodological basis for the analysis of polyphonic works was the theoretical concepts of P. Hindemith, Peng Cheng, Fang Zuin, Li Hong, Sun Wei-bo. The results of the study. The research outcomes demonstrate the evolutionary development of the genre diversity of Chinese piano polyphony as well as those composers who created magnificent musical pieces. Conclusions. Chinese composers have fully mastered the art of modern counterpoint, represented by the genres of polyphonic program pieces (He Lu Ting), invention (Xiao Shu Xian, Du Qian, Sun Yun Yin, Chen Chen Quang), polyphonic suite (Ma Gui), large polyphonic cycle ( He Shao, Chen Hua Do, Xiao Shu Xian), fugue (Li Jun Yong, Yu Su Yan, Chen Gang, Tian Lei Lei, Duan Ping Tai, Zheng Zhong, Xiao Shu Xian) and small cycle “Prelude and Fugue” (Ding Shan Te, Chen Zhi Ming, Wang Li Shan). Creatively assimilating and rethinking the experience of Western polyphonists, Chinese composers have filled their polyphonic works with national features, firmly linking them with the origins of Chinese traditional and folk music. The polyphonic way of transmitting musical material becomes the most expressive at the moments of profound creativity and musical dramatization.

Abstract:
Shakespeare studies in Mainland China and Taiwan evolved from the same origin during the two centuries after Shakespeare being introduced into China in the early nineteenth century. Although Shakespeare was first seen on the Taiwan stage in the Japanese language during the colonial period, it was after Kuomintang moved to Taiwan in 1949 that Shakespeare studies began to flourish when scholars and theatrical experts from mainland China, such as Liang Shih-Chiu, Yu Er-Chang, Wang Sheng-shan and others brought Chinese Shakespeare to Taiwan. Since the 1980s, mainland Shakespeareans began to communicate actively with their colleagues in Taiwan. With the continuous efforts of Cao Yu, Fang Ping, Meng Xianqiang, Gu Zhengkun, Yang Lingui and many other scholars in mainland China and Chu Li-Min, Yen Yuan-shu, Perng Ching-Hsi and other scholars in Taiwan, communications and conversations on Shakespeare studies across the Taiwan Strait were gradually enhanced in recent years. Meanwhile, innovations in Chinese adaptations of Shakespeare have resulted in a new performing medium, Shake-xiqu, through which theatrical practitioners on both sides explore possibilities of a union of Shakespeare and traditional Chinese theatre. This paper studies some intricate relationship in the history of Shakespeare studies in mainland China and Taiwan from a developmental perspective and suggests opportunities for positive and effective co-operations and interactions in the future.

Abstract:
Abstract It is reported that long-term use of estrogen could increase the risk of ovarian cancer. However, the role of estrogen in immunoevasion is not fully explored. We have previously demonstrated that estrogen-mediated upregulation of E2F6, and, c-Kit, by epigenetic silencing of miR-193a, and a competing endogenous (ceRNA) mechanism. In this study, we found that PBX1, a transcriptional activator of the immunosuppressive cytokine, IL-10, is also a target of miR-193a. Importantly, overexpression of the E2F6 3’UTR upregulates both E2F6 and, PBX1, as well as IL10 in ovarian cancer cell lines, suggesting that ceRNA mechanism exists between E2F6 and PBX1. These phenomena are further supported by our stochastic simulation of the estrogen-mediated E2F6 ceRNA network on the distribution of E2F6 and PBX1 mRNA in cancer cells, which is consistent with the TCGA ovarian cancer RNA-Seq dataset. Importantly, monocyte-derived dendritic cell activation of T-cell function was inhibited by pretreatment of conditioned media derived from ovarian cancer cells overexpressing E2F6 3’UTR; such inhibition was rescueable by an anti-IL-10 antibody. Clinically, IL10 level was higher in ovarian cancer patients with higher E2F6 and PBX1, and in ovarian cancer cell lines overexpressed with E2F6 3’UTR. Taken together, these results showed that E2F6 could suppress anti-tumor immune response of dendritic cell, E2F6 ceRNA network. Epigenetic intervention in restoring the expression of miR-193a may be able to enhance anti-tumor immune response against ovarian cancer. Citation Format: Michael W.Y. Lau, Ling-yee Liny, and 劉令始. "Wind and water of two villages : investigating a possible connection between fungshui and prosperity of two villages in Ping Shan : the case of Hang Tau Tsuen and Hang Mei Tsuen." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/208064.

Abstract:
As someone who have studied Fungshui and offers Fungshui advice, I am aware that the collective success of a village is often qualified, traditionally, by the number of wealthy landlords, accomplished scholars, illustrious officials, male offspring, and long-life people. In modern times, the attribution to good Fungshui in a village is similar: by the number of rich businessmen and landowners, accomplished professionals, high-ranking government officials and high-profile celebrities. The emphasis is still on men, even though there are more clanswomen and many successful clanswomen. Based on this notion of attributing the success of clansmen to good Fungshui, I wonder if this could provide a means of measuring how “good” is good Fungshui of a village. The Tang clan is one of the five great clans (i.e. Tang, Hau (侯), Pang (彭), Liu (廖) and Man (文)) residing in Hong Kong. Since the migration and settlement of the family to Ping Shan in the 12th Century by the 92nd generation ancestor Tang Yuen-ching (鄧元禎) with his son Tang Chung-kwong (alias Tang Man-lei) (鄧從光, 字萬里), the Tang clan of Ping Shan has been evolved for more than 800 years with a long period of economic prosperity and social achievements. Many villagers in Ping Shan attribute this success to good Fungshui in and around the villages. In what ways does Fungshui contribute to the economic and social success in villages in Ping Shan? How can this seemingly unmeasurable Fungshui qualification of success in Ping Shan be measured in more concrete terms? These are the research questions for this dissertation. This is an investigative research into the land and the people of villages in Ping Shan, with focus on tracing notable clansmen from past to present as a measure of the reputed good Fungshui of the land. It is with my interest in heritage and my lifelong dedication to the understanding of Fungshui that I attempt this unconventional research in making a connection between two pedagogies – the intangible cultural heritage of Fungshui and the cultural landscape of Ping Shan. The place Ping Shan, after all, is where I grew up, and this is a place to which I have strong emotional attachment. As such, I feel obligated to find out more about Ping Shan. I did not know the outcome of the research, and my expectation was that even if I did not find the connection, I would at least find out more about the history of the people and the geography of the place and contribute towards the understanding of the cultural landscape of two villages in Ping Shan.

Abstract:
Case study 3: The cluster of villages in the New Territories, known collectively as Ping Shan, is one of the oldest traditional, rice-growing settlements in Hong Kong. It is a mixture of organically evolved and associative cultural landscapes, the latter comprising an auspicious fung shui hill resembling a crab and a strategically positioned pagoda that are credited with bringing fortune and prosperity. British colonial control of the district was enforced by construction of a police station on the fung shui hill which symbolically killed the ‘crab’. The subsequent decline of the village’s fortune is believed to stem from this action and was compounded by the development of a new town on the adjacent farmland. A recent change of use for the police station to a clan museum has lifted the spirits of the villagers but the cultural landscape has been irreversibly depleted by inappropriate land use zoning that permitted urban encroachment and cumulative impacts from major road and rail projects.

Abstract:
This chapter is devoted to fibulae, which are clothing pins that operated on the same principle as the modern safety pin. The style of fibulae changed relatively rapidly throughout the Bronze and Iron Ages, and they have long been used as the principal chronological indicator for a given grave or settlement. Of all of the common objects preserved from late prehistoric Europe, fibulae are the most attractive, in the sense that even today people are drawn to them, finding them intriguing to look at. The reason that they are so appealing is that they embody a number of the visually commanding features outlined in Chapter 2. In their shapes, they are unlike anything in nature and thus immediately seize our attention. In addition, fibulae had a unique property among material culture items of late prehistoric Europe. In order to operate a fibula—to attach it to a garment—the user had to apply considerable force with the thumb and forefinger to the pin in order to lift the end out of the catch. Then, after sliding the pin through a textile garment or removing it from one, he or she released the pin to sit in the catch again. No other objects required this kind of bodily manipulation in order to serve their intended purposes.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the woman's—particularly the civilian woman's—perspective in processing the aftermath of war and the human costs it entails. It examines the relentless feeling of “dis-ease” that has been felt after the war is over—the trauma that the soldiers have endured, the political ramifications in the aftermath of conflict, calls for activism, and so on. The chapter focuses on one form of activism in particular—the CODEPINK alert—which calls for people to “wage peace.” From here the chapter explores the gendered associations of the color pink and how it aids in the cause of peace, if not of feminism and women's political action, both of which are also discussed in detail.

Abstract:
For many years it is known that activation of the factor XII (FXII) -prekallikrein (PKK)- kininogen system of coagulation (contact activation) also may be involved in activation of fibrinolysis. Despite the numerous efforts over the past two decades to clarify this process, our current insights in this matter are far from complete. Also the physiological meaning of this possible interlinkage of coagulation and fibrinolysis is still uncertain; clearcut clinical manifestations in patients deficient in FXII or PKK are not found. No doubt, activation of fibrinolysis is a much more complicated process than it originally was thought to be, and it is only recently that the importance of urokinase for fibrinolysis in the circulation became clear. Two pathways of plasminogen (Pig) activation may be distinguished: 1. the extrinsic system, catalysed by t-PA, which upon stimulus is increasingly released from the endothelial cells of the vessel wall and 2. the intrinsic system, catalysed via Pig proactivators which circulate in the blood at a fairly constant level of concentration. The discovery that the virgin 55 kD urokinase molecule in fact is a single-chain proenzym (now denoted by scu-PA, single-chain urokinase-type PA), the notion that 55 kD scu-PA occurs in the blood and that its concentration even among individuals is fairly constant (2.1+/-0.4 ng/ml, n=52), and the observation that the efficacy of scu-PA is fibrin selective, all are recent findings pointing to the involvement of scu-PA in the intrinsic system.Still the relation between contact activation and the activation of scu-PA is obscure. Active KK, for instance, is an effective activator of 55 kD scu-PA, but proteolytic cleavage of scu-PA resulting in an active molecule, is readily achieved in plasma’s deficient in FXII or PKK. In addition, a portion of Pig activator activity which is dependent for its activation on FXII and PKK, is fully recovered in plasma’s artificially depleted in 55 kD scu-PA. Yet, both portions are activated by negatively charged surfaces or dextransulphate (DXS) as a substitute! These observations have led to the concept of two co-ordinative pathways of Pig activation for the intrinsic system: one containing scu-PA, the other containing FXII, PKK and a postulated Pig proactivator (note that the Pig activator activities of FXIIa and KK per se do not account for the latter portion of activity). Until recently in both pathways was a missing link: in the former it was the step between the negatively charged surface and scu-PA, in the latter it was the postulated Pig proactivator between active KK and Pig. This year, however, it became clear that in plasma artificially depleted in u-PA, still a substantial amount of protein immunochemically related to u-PA, can be detected (at least 35 ng/ml), but only after SDS PAGE. Part of this protein is a single-chain 110 kD molecule which in plasma can be converted to a cleaved molecule with Pig activator activity provided the plasma contains FXII and PKK. Although the relation with the 55 kD scu-PA remained unclear, the discovery of this 110 kD PA with latent urokinase antigen, undoubtedly, explains the missing link between KK and Pig. The other missing link still remains unexplained. It could be an in vitro artefact by DXS causing scu-PA catalysed activation of Pig as fibrin clots do. Since subsequently generated plasmin is capable of activation of both scu-PA and FXII, the two intrinsic pathways are thus interlinked via feed-back activation and consequently may be co-operative in function.

"EVIDENCE THAT ABNORMAL PLATELET AGGREGATION IN SPONTANEOUSLY HYPERTENSIVE RATS IS LINKED WITH PHOSPHOINOSITIDES TURNOVER AND PHOSPHORYLATION OF 47,000 DALTON PROTEIN." Abstract:
We have shown earlier that abnormal platelet aggregation in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) is not caused by prostaglandins (Thromb. Res. 41, 555-566, 1986). In this study platelets from SHR and normotensive (Wistar Kyoto, WKY) rats were used to examine the role of phosphoinositides (Pins) and protein phosphorylation in increased platelet activation in hypertension. Thrombin (0.05 U/ml) induced rapid hydrolysis of phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bis-phosphate (PIP2), phosphatidyl-inositol-4-phosphate (PIP), and phosphatidylinositol (PI) in (32p)-pO4 labeled platelets. However, significantly greater hydrolysis of PIP2 and PI was seen in SHR platelets than in WKY platelets (see Table). Thrombin also caused two- to three-fold increased accumulation of phosphatidic acid (PA) in SHR platelets than in WKY platelets (see Table).Thrombin caused phosphorylation of 18,000 Dalton (P18) and 47, Dalton (P47) proteins in SHR and WKY Platelets. Significantly increased phosphorylation of P47 was seen at 5, 15, 60 and 240 seconds of incubation with thrombin in SHR platelets (60%, 68%, 98% and 91%) than in WKY platelets (13%, 37%, 44% and 47%). The extent of P18 phosphorylation was same in both SHR and WKY platelets. Aspirin (500 uM) did not affect phosphorylation of P47 or P18 in SHR or WKY Platelets. These data lead us to suggest that increased turnover of Pins and increased phosphorylation of P47 are involved in abnormal platelet aggregation in SHR (Supported in part by the COHC grant #86-01-A and the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine).

Abstract:
In the development of the SuperCritical Water Reactor (SCWR), it is planned to carry out a fuel qualification test (FQT) on a small scale fuel assembly in the research reactor LVR-15 located in Research Center Rez (CZ). The subject of the SCWR-FQT project is to design and license a facility containing the small scale fuel assembly comprised of 4 fuel pins with wire wraps, including the required loop with its safety and auxiliary systems. The present paper focuses on the transient analyses for start-up and shut-down of the FQT loop, particularly to explore the ability of system codes ATHLET 3.0A to simulate the transient between subcritical conditions and supercritical conditions. Simulations of heating up of the SCWR-FQT loop and achieving nominal supercritical conditions (Tiio=390 °C and Pio=25 MPa for primary circuit) were carried out. Further, analyses of shut-down of the SCWR-FQT loop from its supercritical conditions by shutting down the reactor and cooling down the loop until subcritical conditions were performed. Particular attention was dedicated for the models of heat transfer in supercritical condition.

Abstract:
In this study, a new developed tribological multi-function simulator system, SHU-MFS is firstly introduced. By changing of the holder, a hip joint simulator and a POD tester can be generated in the new system. The simulator is designed not only for wear tests of the total hip prostheses, but also applicable in common tribological study. As to the module of hip joint simulator, this design can be described as having the basic motion components in human hip joints. A frequency control system is developed to offer a wide range of rotation frequency so as to provide proper experiments towards different groups. In the POD part, eight precision-made pins are generated and an advanced computer system is built up to measure the friction coefficient of the test samples.

Abstract:
Avel is a fine example of early yacht construction; fitting into the evolution of boatbuilding practices found in the pilot cutters and other working craft being built in the late 1800's in the British Isles. She was even built with similar materials: English white oak and elm, American long leaf yellow pine, and wrought iron drifts. Her salon paneling of teak and long-leaf yellow pine could have been found on Rene B, a pilot cutter from Barry. Chief differences would have been her teak topsides, nonferrous plank fastenings, and perhaps her wrought iron floors, hanging, and lodging knees. This paper with it's complimentary slide show is a thorough description of Avel's restoration, in which approximately 70% of the original fabric of her hull and interior were kept intact.

Abstract:
Crystallographically engineered Relaxor-PT single crystals, specifically PMN-PT (Generation I) and PIN-PMN-PT/PMN-PZT (Generation II), offer much higher piezoelectric and electromechanical coupling coefficients (d33 > 1,500 pC/N, k33 > 0.9), when compared to polycrystalline PZT ceramics. Recently Ceracomp Co., Ltd. (www.ceracomp.com) has developed the solid-state single crystal growth (SSCG) technique and successfully fabricated Gen III PMN-PZT single crystals modified with acceptors or donors [Fig. 1]. The piezoelectric constants (d33) of (001) Gen III PMN-PZT single crystals were measured to be higher than 4,000 pC/N and thus about two times higher than those of PMN-PT/PZN-PT (Gen I) and PIN-PMN-PT/PMN-PZT (Gen II) single crystals. The Gen III PMN-PZT single crystals have been firstly applied to single crystal-epoxy composites, ultrasonic transducers, piezoelectric sensors, and piezoelectric actuators [Fig. 2]. In this presentation, we will introduce the development of high performance piezoelectric sensors and actuators by using the Gen III PMN-PZT single crystals for SHM (structural health monitoring) application.

Abstract:
A computational study is conducted to explore thermal performances of natural convection hybrid fin heat sinks (HF HSs). The proposed HF HSs are a hollow hybrid fin heat sink (HHF HS) and a solid hybrid fin heat sink (SHF HS). Parametric effects such as a fin spacing, an internal channel diameter, a heat dissipation on the performance of HF HSs are investigated by CFD analysis. Study results show that the thermal resistance of the HS increases while the mass-multiplied thermal resistance of the HS decreases associated with the increase of the channel diameter. The results also shows the thermal resistance of the SHF HS is 13% smaller, and the mass-multiplied thermal resistance of the HHF HS is 32% smaller compared with the pin fin heat sink (PF HS). These interesting results are mainly due to integrated effects of the mass-reduction, the surface area enhancement, and the heat pumping via the internal channel. Such better performances of HF HSs show the feasibility of alternatives to the conventional PF HS especially for passive cooling of LED lighting modules.

Abstract:
During online implementation of vibration-based structural health monitoring (SHM) strategies, forward prediction of the system state may allow for improved detection speed. With adequately fast forward prediction, feedback systems can also be improved to provide in-time control plants. When using solely physics-driven models, small discrepancies between the physical system and digital model can result in significant deviation between the estimated and true output. On the opposite end, a solely data-driven model can only reasonably be applied in an identical, or sufficiently similar, scenario to that for which the data was collected. Using machine learning to combine data with known physics is a well-proved approach to overcoming this issue. One such method for this approach is the use of physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), which can be implemented as either a forward modeller, or a constrained learner, for equation solution discovery, or equation discovery. The former of these aims to provide the desired output from the governing physical equations, whereas the latter estimates the parameters in these equations. A significant advantage of PINNs is, given a suitable network architecture, the high speed and low computational-cost of their prediction step, which positions them as a useful approach for real-time estimation, given adequate training. A common assumption for PINNs is that the embedded physics is exhaustive with respect to the ‘true’ model. In this paper, a novel PINN-based architecture is presented to rapidly forward-predict the state of a dynamic system given an initial state. For the state estimation, the PINN acts as an equation solution discovery approach, and the novelty of the architecture here is to provide a more generalised predictor which can be applied to a wider range of instances. The PINN is intended to deliver its prediction within a prescribed time frame, which equals the sampling time of the acquisition/control system, and is here assessed against this goal.

Abstract:
Case Report: A 56-year-old woman, multiparous patient, diabetic, hypertensive and tabagist, and taking insulin, metformin, losartan, propranolol, hydrochlorothiazide, and aspirin presents to a clinic. She also had a previous surgery for extraction of a duodenum carcinoma and a nodule in lower lateral quadrant of right breast about 15 years ago, which on previous ultrasound was hyperechoic, with heterogeneous content, measuring about 27×18.5×25 mm. Upon arrival at the hospital, the patient had an ulcerated lesion with a central necrotic area in the lower outer quadrant of the right breast, with drainage of bloody secretion and a foul odor, and a generalized hyperemia in the region of the right breast. On physical examination, the patient had local hyperemia and areas of fluctuation in lateral quadrants. There were no palpable lymph nodes. The results of her initial laboratory investigations showed a leukocytosis and an increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein. A computed tomography scan of the breast, chest, and abdomen showed massive subcutaneous emphysema in the right breast, extending from the subcutaneous region of the anterolateral and abdominal chest wall to the right iliac fossa, associated with diffuse densification of the muscular fascia and adjacent subcutaneous tissue. She was treated with intravenous broad-spectrum antibiotics that included 1 g of oxacillin and 1.5 g of metronidazole. She underwent surgical debridement for 3 consecutive days, starting 24 hours after hospital admission. She was recommended 1 g of ceftriaxone and amphotericin B along with antibiotic therapy. At the second surgery, a wound tissue was collected for histopathological examination discarding malignancy. Five weeks later, wounds appeared clean, healing with pink granulation tissue. Conclusion: This case shows that early diagnosis and management of necrotizing fasciitis of the breast can be lifesaving and may allow for breast conservation. Early aggressive debridement combined with antibiotic therapy resulted in successful wound healing and preservation of tissue with a satisfactory cosmetic outcome.
