Abstract:
Pilgrimage is a global human phenomenon spanning cultures, religions, and continents. Some pilgrimage centres attract millions of pilgrims each year creating an important ‘spiritual tourism’ industry. ‘Pilgrimage around the world’ shows that some sites are not faith-specific; Jerusalem has great significance in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and is a site of pilgrimage for all three. Not all pilgrimage places are internationally significant, however—many are essentially local in nature and involve replications of more famed and distant ones, allowing people who cannot travel far to simulate the pilgrimage. The detail of pilgrimage practices may differ across religious traditions and countries, but there is much common ground, even with ‘secular’ pilgrimages.

Abstract:
The chapter analyzes the place of pilgrimage in the Dharmaśāstra literature. It suggests that the mentioning of specific place names, the narratives of the places, and their merit distinguish the emergence of a textual tradition of pilgrimage. The topic of pilgrimage places and pilgrimage enter the Dharmaśāstra textual tradition fully only with the Dharmanibandhas, and the number of texts that treat tīrtha and tīrthayātrā as a subject of Dharmaśāstra is surprisingly small. Arguably, the inclusion of pilgrimage in the Dharmanibandhas was to infuse orthodoxy into a tradition that was to some degree driven by the economic benefits of the tīrtha priests. Further, their inclusion indicated that pilgrimage had become central to the economy of certain places. Another purpose may perhaps have been to establish rules and regulations to promote pilgrimage as a practice appropriate for Brahmans. Finally, geographical integration was probably also a factor.

Abstract:
Pilgrimage is found in most religious cultures and pilgrimage sites around the world—including Mecca in Saudi Arabia, Lourdes in France, and Shikoku in Japan—attract millions of pilgrims annually, while a flourishing 'spiritual tourism' industry has grown to promote the practice. In the present day, new pilgrimage locations, including 'secular' ones with no official affiliation, such as Graceland, Elvis Presley's house, continue to emerge across the world. Pilgrimage: A Very Short Introduction explores the key issues and themes of pilgrimage through early history to the present, looking at its various forms, how people take part, what is learnt from the journeys, and why pilgrimage remains popular in an increasingly secular age.
