Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to combine two types of source that are usually kept apart in the study of the Italian later Middle Ages: direct tax assessments and local court records. The purpose of putting these two sources together is to discover more about the operation of the local vicariate courts (another neglected element of Italian states) and about wealth distribution and litigation in the Italian countryside. The tax assessments are first analysed for what they reveal of agriculture, migration and wealth, then the court records for the identity of plaintiffs and defendants, and the nature of pleas. To interpret the resulting pattern of debts and credit, cooperation and conflict, concepts from English medieval historiography are used to explore the relationship between debtors and creditors.

Abstract:
Pietro Loreta (1831 to 1889), head of surgery at the University of Bologna, Italy, is at present a little-known name. However, in the field of surgery in the second half of the 19th century, his contributions to various areas, especially that of bladder stone treatment and gastric surgery, aroused great interest also at the international level. This survey focuses on both of these subjects that are particularly indicative of Loreta's activity. While he was trying to improve the operation of perineal cystotomy, which was about to be abandoned, he was faced with the new frontier of gastrointestinal tract surgery. Surgery was in rapid transformation, and the practice of a general surgeon still encompassed the domains of different surgical specialities, which would develop individually afterward. Loreta was a pupil of the outstanding surgeon Francesco Rizzoli and some of his pupils such as Alessandro Codivilla and Bartolo Nigrisoli became heads of surgery. His attitude of caution, that he recommended in his writings, is more remarkable considering his problematic nature and might be the most significant and original trait of Loreta's personality.

Abstract:
Pietro Aaron (c.1480-c.1550) is the author of five music treatises. The first, Libri tres de institutione harmonica (Bologna, 1516), was composed in Italian and then translated into Latin by the humanist Giovanni Antonio Flaminio (1464-1536); the other four appeared in Italian, which made Aaron a pioneer in this regard. The Thoscanello de la musica, the first of the vernacular treatises, proved very successful and was reissued three times in the course of the sixteenth century under the title Toscanello in musica (Venice, 1529, 1539, 1562). These reissues are very similar to each other, but are clearly distinct from the first edition, in particular by the addition of an appendix (aggiunta) on various questions concerning musica ficta and the modes of Gregorian chant.

Abstract:
Scholars have proposed Milan, Pisa and/or Bologna as possible locations for the copying of the inner gatherings (II–IV) of the manuscript Modena, Biblioteca Estense Universitaria, α.M.5.24 (Mod A) and have argued that some of the compositions might have originated in the circle of Archbishop of Milan Pietro Filargo. Yet evidence based on Mod A's repertory and the scant biographies of its composers is insufficient for determining the manuscript’s origin. To solve this problem, I look at Mod A as a cultural artifact, attributing its illumination to the Master of 1411, an illuminator active in Bologna from 1404 to 1411, or to his assistant, both associated with the manuscript workshop of the Olivetan abbey of San Michele in Bosco, on the outskirts of medieval Bologna. The Master of 1411 might have been Giacomo da Padova, an illuminator documented there between 1407 and 1409. Iconographical analysis shows that the illuminator of Mod A possessed considerable knowledge of Paduan culture before the fall of the ruling Carrara family in 1405. This knowledge is apparent in his use of an astrological allusion to Carrara heraldry in his decoration of the song Inperial sedendo. His illumination of a Gloria by Egardus with the figure of Saint Anthony of Padua implies a familiarity with Padua's musical institutions. Mod A may have been illuminated when the papal entourage of John XXIII visited San Michele in Bosco in the fall of 1410, although further compositions were added after the illuminator had finished his work. This conclusion invites scholars to consider afresh the social context that might have fostered the compilation of the repertory in the inner gatherings of Mod A.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The study is devoted to the painter Zanino di Pietro, who was mainly active in Venice between the 14th and 15th centuries. Indeed, this artist was an eminent personality of the Late Gothic period and took part to the transition of the artistic scene from the neo-Giottesque style to the International style introduced in the Lagoon by Gentile da Fabriano. The goal of the research was to rebuild Zanino di Pietro’s catalogue, analyzing every artwork attributed to the painter and trying to resolve some critical issues or various attributions so far unresolved. The research was carried out deepening the master's artistic development together with his biography: from this viewpoint, the archival research made in different Italian cities has been an important part of the work. It has brought to light some unpublished documents concerning Zanino di Pietro’s links with patrons and the artistic context of his time. These findings have given the opportunity to identify more references and dates to support the reconstruction of his corpus. Furthermore, an important part of the study is dedicated to his workshop and the artistic influences that the painter received throughout his career.

Abstract:
New information and analysis about Carlo Bianconi’s biography and writings mainly appear from unpublished archival material bare. This work allows to clarify the education of Bianconi, who grew up in a family of bibliophiles and art collectors. He kept abreast of theoretical development of Winckelmann and Mengs, who personally knew and he gradually moved closer and accepted the models of the classicism that was also mediated by the relationship established with Francesco Algarotti, who is here reevaluate. Regarding his two-year period spent in Rome, the relationship with the Cardinal Albani and moreover his trip to Naples, a glimmer is opened, with important implications for his intellectual maturity. Furthermore, there are: the reason regarding the choice of Bianconi as Secretary of the Academy of Brera, his educational initiatives and the relationship with Carlo di Firmian. From time to time, his many correspondents, his figurative works of art and especially his published writings were commented (for example the guide of Bologna and Milan) and his unpublished writings (such as Vitruvius, theoretical writings on the origin of architecture and engraving, orations) are remembered and also the collaboration with the Enciclopedia Metodica of Pietro Zani is reconsidered. Artist, collector, art writer and teacher, immersed in a climate of a Rationalism, he is a early supporter of the new taste for the classic.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Gastaldi, Sciltian. "Pier Vittorio Tondelli: Letteratura Minore e Scrittura dell'Impegno Sociale." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/44076.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This thesis illustrates the social engagement in the literary writings of Pier Vittorio Tondelli, an Italian gay author whose works have been described by many Catholic, Materialists, and gay critics as frivolous and disengaged. The dissertation summarizes the mutation of the Italian literary concept of impegno from Neorealism to Postmodernism, through a selection of the texts of Elio Vittorini, Italo Calvino, Franco Fortini, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Leonardo Sciascia, and Umberto Eco. It shows how Tondelli’s interpretation of the role of the writer falls within the definitions given by Calvino and Eco. Moreover, the thesis demonstrates that Altri libertini and Pao Pao satisfy the characteristics of littérature mineure established by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, though Tondelli’s oeuvre is socially engaged instead of being politically engaged because of his lack of a political ideology. The dissertation highlights the core of Tondelli’s social commitment in his passionate defense of the outcasts in: Altri libertini where drug addicts, homosexuals, transsexuals, and bums are the protagonists; Pao Pao where a group of gay soldiers is described in its grotesque and camp attempt to “homosexualize” their barrack; Rimini where the Riviera Adriatica is portrayed as a place where everyone passes by and no one belongs; Camere separate through the love story of a gay couple in which one partner has to survive his lover’s death, due to an illness that is demonstrated in this thesis to be AIDS, while fighting against the homophobia of their families, institutions, society, and religion. Most of Tondelli’s socially excluded characters are introduced to the reader through an internal homodiegetic point of view. Another important component of Tondelli’s impegno is his open defense of both pop-culture and counter-cultures: gay, hippies, rockers, experimental theatre, street artists and alternative radio, which are central in all his writings.

Abstract:
Abstract “A Galilean Education” centers on Bianchini’s training first at the Jesuit College in Bologna, then in the Galilean school of Geminiano Montanari in Padua, and finally in the eclectic metropolitan science practiced at Giovanni Giustino Ciampini’s Physico-Mathematical Academy in Rome. The chapter develops Bianchini’s character as a scholar, humanist, diplomat, and pious but not bigoted Catholic. As the eldest son of a family of modest means, he had to prepare early in life for an independent career. At first his ambitions centered on a post in the Vatican Library, but important patronage from the Ottoboni family, procured through an uncle, enabled him to do much better when Pietro Ottoboni became Pope Alexander VIII.

In his major works he outlines the growth of the Church’s political power, scathingly criticizes the papacy for eroding the piety of Italians and keeping Italy disunited, blames Christianity for teaching the passive acceptance of sufferings instead of the vigorous defense of one’s country, and blames Saints Francis and Dominic for teaching that “it is evil to speak evil of evil” and allowing churchmen “to do the worst they can.” Machiavelli praises Roman religion but shows how the nobles manipulated the oath and the auspices to deceive the plebs. Savonarola was learned and virtuous, but misused his political influence. In 1503 Machiavelli witnessed Pope Julius’s destruction of Cesare Borgia and in 1506 accompanied Julius on his seemingly reckless campaign to humble Giampaolo Baglioni of Perugia and remove the Bentivoglio of Bologna. Throughout he emphasizes Julius’s erratic, impulsive, indecisive, choleric, and imperious nature. In 1510 Machiavelli was sent to France to persuade Louis not to pressure Florence to send troops to support French positions in Lombardy. After tense meetings that focused on Julius’s threats against Florence and the danger he represented to peace in Italy, Machiavelli succeeded in persuading the king to drop the demand. Julius’s successes despite his lack of prudence posed theoretical issues that Machiavelli explored in the Ghiribizzi, The Prince, and the Discourses. Ultimately, he portrayed him as the author of Italy’s ruin.

Vinod K. Singh of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur optimized (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 6520) an organocatalyst for the enantioselective addition of thiophenol to an imide 1 to give 2 in high ee. Amir H. Hoveyda of Boston College developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2011, 50, 7079) a Cu catalyst for the preparation of 4 by the enantioselective hydroboration of a 1,1-disubstituted alkene 3. Yong-Qiang Tu of Lanzhou University effected (Chem. Sci. 2011, 2, 1839) enantioselective bromination of the prochiral 5 to give the bromoketone 6. Song Ye of the Institute of Chemistry, Beijing established (Chem. Commun. 2011, 47, 8388) the alkylated quaternary center of the dimer 8, by condensing a ketene 7 with CS2. Li Deng of Brandeis University added (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2011, 50, 10565) cyanide in a conjugate sense to an acyl imidazole 9 to give 11. Pier Giorgio Cozzi of the Università di Bologna prepared (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2011, 50, 7842) the thioacetal 14 by condensing 13 with an aldehyde 12, followed by reduction. Takahiro Nishimura and Tamio Hayashi of Kyoto University devised (Chem. Commun. 2011, 47, 10142) a Co catalyst for the enantioselective addition of a silyl alkyne 16 to an enone 15 to give the alkynyl ketone 17. Ping Tian and Guo-Qiang Lin of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry described (Tetrahedron 2011, 67, 10186) improved catalysts for the enantioselective conjugate addition of dimethyl malonate 19 to the nitroalkene 18, to give 20. Keiji Maruoka, also of Kyoto University, established (Chem. Sci. 2011, 2, 2311) conditions for the enantioselective addition of an aldehyde 21 to the acceptor 22 to give, after reduction, an alcohol 23 that could readily be cyclized to the lactone. Jianrong (Steve) Zhou of Nanyang Technological University prepared (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 15882) the ester 26 by arylation, under Pd catalysis, of a ketene silyl acetal 24 with the triflate 25. Benjamin List of the Max-Planck-Institut, Mülheim employed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2011, 50, 9471) a system of three catalysts to effect the enantioselective alkylation of an aldehyde 27 with the allyic alcohol 28 to give 29.

Abstract:
The ARA plan, acronym for Architecture and Rehabilitation of Alcoy, was the response to a collective desire of change and to the need for the renewal of an industrial city with a deeply rooted bourgeois and working-class base. The impulse and credibility that made possible the conception of the ARA plan came from a series of projects that consolidated seriously damaged zones of the historic center, and secondarily from the economic commitment of the Generalitat with urban projects of great disciplinary interest that, at that time, had the character of pioneers for their modern procedures of intervention on the inherited city. The common framework of Plan ARA hosted many urban proposals very different in their methodology. However the sense of their cohesion in the city was evident because behind them there was a thought of order necessary for the consolidation and modernization of the urban patrimony that future challenges would ask for. The most relevant architectural project was the renovation of the neighborhood of La Sang, which won the FAD Architecture Award in 1999, but for the citizens the evidence of a remarkable change came with the construction of the public parks. Since that moment the people perceived that an ambitious and clear idea of the city was giving shape to their daily domestic outer spaces.Unfortunately a mix of political and economical issues truncated or set aside important ongoing projects so the completion of the ARA plan was never reached. and the aspiration of becoming an strategic city was forgotten.References:Vidal Vidal, Vicente M.
