Abstract:

Abstract:
Automating inspection of critical infrastructure such as sewer systems will help utilities optimize maintenance and replacement schedules. The current inspection process consists of manual reviews of video as an operator controls a sewer inspection vehicle remotely. The process is slow, labor-intensive, and expensive and presents a huge potential for automation. With this work, we address a central component of the next generation of robotic inspection of sewers, namely the choice of 3D sensing technology. We investigate three prominent techniques for 3D vision: passive stereo, active stereo, and time-of-flight (ToF). The Realsense D435 camera is chosen as the representative of the first two techniques wheres the PMD CamBoard pico flexx represents ToF. The 3D reconstruction performance of the sensors is assessed in both a laboratory setup and in an outdoor above-ground setup. The acquired point clouds from the sensors are compared with reference 3D models using the cloud-to-mesh metric. The reconstruction performance of the sensors is tested with respect to different illuminance levels and different levels of water in the pipes. The results of the tests show that the ToF-based point cloud from the pico flexx is superior to the output of the active and passive stereo cameras.

Abstract:
Pico hydro or a small scale hydroelectric power plant is used as the rotating energy of the generator. Pico hydro is a hydroelectric power plant that has a power of less than 5 kW. Technically, Pico hydro has three main components namely water, turbine and generator. Turbine type propeller reaction has a special profile that causes a decrease in water pressure during the blades. This pressure difference exerts force on the blade so that the runner (rotating part of the turbine) can rotate. Permanent magnets are used to produce magnetic flux. Permanent magnets used are rare-eatrhrod magnet material, neodymium-iron-boron NdFeB with N35 type. The planned generator released is 36.85 V, 500 rpm, 50 hz. This designed water turbine has four blades which cannot change its angle. As for the measurement results produce a voltage of 35.1 V with a manufacturing efficiency of 95 %. Charging the battery voltage must be more than 12 V, therefore the generator must be turned at least 200 rpm with a voltage of 14 V to be used for charging batteries.

Abstract:
The RFPM(Radial Flux Permanent Magnet) generator has numerous advantages such as high output voltage and output power, high efficiency, manufacture easy but the slotted RFPM generator configuration produces the cogging torque. The cogging torque would be the source of acoustic noise and vibration. This paper presents the electromagnetic structure design analysis and the cogging torque reduction design of RFPM generator. It is composed of the inner stator and the outer stator and internal rotor. We called it as DG-RFPMG(Dual Generator-Radial Flux Permanent Magnet Generator). Firstly, the design of the pole-arc ratio of rotor magnets to reduce cogging torque is studied. Secondly, the design of the stator displacement of the outer stator and the inner stator to reduce the cogging torque is studied. Finally, the combined design optimization considering both the pole- arc ratio and the stator displacement to reduce the cogging torque is studied. The design of DG-RFPMG was calculated by 2D FEM(Finite Element Method).

Abstract:
Almost everything we know of Michael Marullus – Greek exile, Neoplatonist, mercenary soldier – is mediated by his poetry, much of which seems positively to invite biographical decoding. The poet tells us he was conceived in the year Constantinople fell to the Turks (1453), after which his family fled, via Ragusa (modern Dubrovnik), to Italy. Here he grew up under the Iliadae … tecta Remi (Siena?), received an excellent education, and from an early age was frequenting the humanist academy of Giovanni Pontano at Naples. Marullus reports that when just seventeen, fate tore him away from his studies and plunged him into a military career (Epig. 2.32.71–3). Between wars, both abroad and within Italy, he composed Latin poetry – including four books of controversial ‘pagan’ hymns –, edited Lucretius, and fraternised with such prominent figures in the literary and intellectual culture of the day as Jacopo Sannazaro and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola. Severed from an eventful life by a fittingly dramatic death, Marullus drowned in an attempt to cross the river Cecina in full flood. His poetic talents were much appreciated in his own time, for example by Leonardo Da Vinci and Thomas More. The love lyrics to ‘Neaera’, though perhaps stiff and conventional to modern taste, inspired Ronsard. His untimely death drew Latin epitaphs from all over Italy.

Abstract:
A comprehensive analysis of optical and dielectric properties of a material is very much essential for the research of device fabrication. From this perception, the sodium (Na) doped lanthanum manganite with 15% substitution of La by Na (La0.85Na0.15MnO3) has been synthesized using the flux method and investigated to observe the optical absorbance, refractive index, capacitance and dielectric constant. In this study, we have reported better optical absorbance for the monovalent Na doping with a slightly lower value of the energy band gap (~ 1.57 eV) compared to the divalent Sr doping on parent LaMnO3. The structural analysis has been accomplished using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to confirm the ability of the flux method to grow higher order La0.85Na0.15MnO3 crystal satisfactorily. Optical properties of La0.85Na0.15MnO3 have been estimated using UV-Vis spectroscopy and the frequency dependent electronic properties (ac conductivity, dielectric constants and capacitance) have been investigated using a precision impedance analyzer. The capacitance has been reported in Pico farad range for La0.85Na0.15MnO3 crystal with the low value of dielectric constant throughout the high-frequency region.

Abstract:
Abstract The increasing demand for high power density wide-bandgap power electronics has propelled heat transfer research leading to a constant increase in the thermal performance of cold plates and heat sinks. Most of this research has focused on reducing thermal resistance of the package which can have a detrimental effect on transient thermal performance if thermal capacitance is reduced. In order to provide both a low thermal resistance and a higher thermal capacitance integrated into the package and near the thermal junction, a new cold plate called the Package Integrated Cyclone COoler (PICCO) was developed. GE Research and the US Army Research Lab collaborated to explore and validate the potential of this concept. The PICCO coldplate, which is enabled by 3D printing, establishes a swirling coolant flow field to remove heat. The swirling flow is anticipated to significantly aid in vapor removal from the surface and hence allow for the fluid to provide thermal capacitance through two-phase heat transfer efficiently. This paper describes the experiment design and development for thermal storage and cooling performance characterization of PICCO. The test rig includes a high-pressure capability gear pump moving fluid first through a Coriolis flowmeter and then through PICCO, where the fluid is accelerated in the cyclone and heated by miniaturized ceramic heaters, simulating SiC power electronics. The coolant releases the accumulated enthalpy to a plate-fin heat exchanger that is connected to a chiller. Several absolute and differential pressure transducers and thermocouples monitor the state of FC-72. The experiments will provide empirical transfer functions characterizing the PICCO pressure drop, heat transfer coefficient, critical heat flux and thermal energy storage capability.

Abstract:
Abstract The demand for high power density, therefore high heat dissipation, power electronics modules is propelled by applications such as hybrid transportation and asynchronous power generation, among others. Besides a low thermal resistance, these applications require high thermal capacitance to manage transient operations. The Package Integrated Cyclone COoler (PICCO) is an additively manufactured, thermal energy storing cooler codesigned by GE Research (GRC) in collaboration with the US Army Research Lab (ARL). The key aspect of PICCO is its capability to swirl a two-phase coolant, i.e. liquid-gas. The centrifugal field creates a radial pressure gradient inducing buoyancy. The strong radial acceleration to which the fluid is subject forces relatively cold flow outward to reach the hot wall, thus boosting the heat transfer, while hot flow and bubbles migrate inward and the two-phase system is nearly isothermal (thermal storage). The proposed study models the swirled flow in terms of liquid film heat conductance and critical heat flux predictions. The resulting heat transfer coefficient can be applied to the walls of the cyclone and used as a boundary condition for the heat conduction problem through the cyclone wall and the module layers.

Abstract:
The Discrete Ordinates Method (DOM) for solving transient radiation transfer equation in cylindrical coordinates is developed for radiation heat transfer in participating turbid media in pico-scale time domain. The application problems addressed here are laser tissue welding and soldering. The novelty of this study lies with the use of ultrashort laser pulses as the irradiation source. The characteristics of transient radiation heat transfer in ultrafast laser tissue welding and soldering are studied with the DOM developed. The temporal distribution of radiative energy inside the tissue cylinder as well as the radiative heat flux on the tissue surface is obtained. Comparisons are performed between laser welding without use of solder and laser soldering with use of solder. The use of solder is found to have highly concentrated radiation energy deposition in the solder-stained region and reduce the surface radiative heat flux accordingly. Comparisons of transient radiation heat transfer between the spatially square-variance and Gaussian-variance laser inputs and between the temporally Gaussian and skewed input profiles are also conducted.

Abstract:
In this paper, we report the heat generation and temperature field in a multilayer device consisting of thin and weakly absorbing materials subject to pico-second to nano-second pulsed-laser heating. The interference effects due to the internal reflection and refraction are considered. A tracking method based on electromagnetic optics and wave optics is used to determine the two-dimensional electrical and magnetic fields. These fields are then used to calculate the heat generation and the accompanying temperature distribution. For demonstration, we apply this method to determine the temperature field in a ZnSe interference filter subject to inclined laser incidence on its side. The simulation results show strong localized heating in a narrow region along the side where laser power is incident. The localized heating produces several high power spots, aligned obliquely to the side surface. The results show that the pure absorption model is not valid for even small incident angles. Surface absorption may be a valid approximation but the heat flux distribution is not uniform.
