Full textThe research aims to define guidelines for the preparation of a plan that deals with quality of life and well-being. The reference to the quality and well-being is positively innovative, because imposes to organs of the government to relate with the subjectivity of active citizens and, at the same time, makes clear the need for a broader and transversal approach to the city and a more close relationship of technicians/experts with the leaders of political and administrative bodies. The research investigates the limits of modern town-planning theory in front of the complexity of new needs expressed by contemporary urban populations. The demand for services has changed significantly compared to that one of the Sixties, not only on the quantity but also and especially in terms of quality, because of the social changes that have transformed the modern city, from the point of view of the structure and the cultural request: the intermittent citizenship, so cities are increasingly experienced and enjoyed by citizens of the world (tourists and/or visitors, temporarily present) and popular citizens (suburban, provincial, metropolitan); radical transformation of the family structure, so the family-type consisting of a couple with children, solid benchmark for the economy and politics, is now minority; the irregularity and flexibility of calendars, diaries and rhythms of life of the population active, and social mobility, so individuals have trajectories of life and daily practices less determined by their social origins of what happened in the past; the elevation of the level of education and thus the increase in demand for culture; the growth of elderly population and the strong social individualism have generated a demand for the city expressed by the people extremely varied and diverse, fragmented and volatile, and in some aspects quite new. Close to old and consolidated requests - the city efficient, functional, productive, accessible to all - there are new questions, ideals and needs such as beauty, variety, usability, security, the ability to amaze and entertain, sustainability, the search for new identities, questions that express a desire to live and enjoy the city, to fell good into the city, questions that can no longer be satisfied through a welfare simply based on education, health, pension system and social security. The modern city or the modern idea of the city, based only on the concepts of order, regularity, cleaning, equality and good governance was handed over to the past history turning into something very different hard to represent, describe, tell. The contemporary city can be represented in many different ways, both on town-planning way and social way: in the recent literature there is the obvious difficulty of defining and enclose within certain limits the subject “city” and the lack of a strong belief in the interpretation of political, economic and social transformations that have invested society and the world in the last century. The contemporary city, beyond the administrative areas, territorial expansion and urban structures, infrastructure, technology, functionalism and global markets, is also a place of human relations, representation of the relationship between individuals and urban spaces where these relationship move. The city is both physical concentration of people and buildings, but also variety of uses and groups, it’s the place of dense social relations where processes of cohesion or social exclusion occur, a place of cultural norms that govern behaviour and identity, expressed physically and symbolically through public spaces of city life. It’s necessary a new approach to study the contemporary city, made up of cross-contamination and knowledge provided by other disciplines such as sociology and human sciences, which help to build the image commonly known of the city and the territory, landscape and environment. The representation of the urban social life varies according to what it is considered, in a specific historic moment and in a given context, a situation of well-being. The modern town-planning aimed at maximum level of well-being for individuals and communities, modelling on "real needs of people": in the old urban systems manuals appears a "Plan of services” as an appendix to the master plan, which includes services distributed on the surrounding areas, a sort of "social master plan" to avoid neighborhoods separated by segments of population or classes. In the contemporary city globalization, new forms of marginalization and exclusion, the advent of the so-called "new economy", the re-definition of the production base and the labour market are urban expression of a social complexity that can be defined trough transactions and symbolic exchanges, rather than trough processes of industrialization and modernization towards which the historic city, adopted modern, was oriented. All of this questions are the expression of that complex of matters which are currently described as "the new welfare", opposed to the one essentially based on education, on health, on the pension system and on social assistances. The research has therefore examined the traditional tools of town-planning and territorial programming in their operational and institutional dimension: the main destination of these instruments is the classification and accommodation of services and urban containers. It’s evident, however, that in order to answer to the many questions of complexity, needs and desires expressed by contemporary society the actual allocations to "make city" must necessarily overcome the concepts of "standards" and "zoning" that are too rigid and unable to adapt to a growing demand for quality and services and at the same time inadequate to manage the relationship between collective space and domestic space. In this sense it is important to consider the relationship between housing types and urban morphology and hence the environment around the house, which establishes the relationship "from the house to the city" because it is in this duality that it is possible to define the relationship between private domestic spaces and public spaces and contextualize questions of roads, shops, meeting places, accesses. After the convergence from the wide urban scale construction to the architectural scale, the attention moves from the architectural scale to the scale of urban constructions, since the criterion of well-being goes through the different scales of habitable space. Moreover, in territorial systems with a widespread well-being and a high level of economic development there’s an emerging awareness that the very concept of well-being is no longer linked only to the ability of collective and/or individual income: today the quality of life is measured in terms of environmental quality and social inclusion. Thus the need of an instrument of knowledge of the contemporary city to be attached to the Plan, containing criteria to be observed in the design of urban spaces in order to determine the quality and well-being, in the meaning of “quality of feeling good”, of urban environment. Obviously, to reach quality and well-being it is necessary to satisfy macroscopic aspects of social functioning and living standards, through the indicators of income, employment, poverty, crime, housing, education, etc., and also first needs, basic and elementary, and secondary, cultural and changing, moving through the welfare state to a general feeling of well-being, to wellness in a holistic sense, all expressions of a desire for mental and physical beauty and a new relationship of the body with the environment, then real expression of a need for an individual and collective wellbeing. And it is this need, new and difficult, which creates the widespread feeling of a starting new urban season, much more than physical changes of the city could represent.

The digital piano is an instrument that has been increasingly used in the musicalization process, instrument practice, and performance. As every instrument has a peculiar technique, the digital piano also offers possibilities in musical interpretation. In the context of teaching piano in group, we investigated the possibilities that the digital clavinova piano CVP 401, instrument used in the piano laboratory at UFG, offers to the musical interpretation. Therefore, the aim of this research is to study the possibilities that the digital piano offers for musical interpretation in this context. For this purpose, three musical pieces of three different music styles were taught: classic, romantic, and Brazilian dance (samba), for piano students in groups, presenting technical tools for distinction in articulation and phrasing for each style in order to evaluate the end result sound. The results are discussed based on the concept of interpretation and musical style of Thurston Dart (2000), Nikolaus Harnoncourt (1998 ), Muniz Sodré (1998) and Carlos Sandroni (2008) technical knowledge of the mechanism of the digital piano used, assessment of four renowned pianists, and the researcher’s experience and knowledge in using the acustic piano and the digital piano. As a result of this work, the digital clavinova CVP 401 offers a potential for different interpretation styles, but with limitations regarding the level of repertoire and the reverberation of harmonics.

Full textThree undergraduate piano students, in different moments of their academic education – a freshman, a sophomore and a senior – were followed during an academic semester in order to investigate how they mobilize their musical knowledge when preparing their repertoire. Multicase studies were used as research method, combining a longitudinal perspective in a transversal design. Four complementary research techniques were employed, namely, semistructure interview, non-structured interview, recall stimulated interview, and observation of the performance. The mobilization of music knowledge was interpreted from the strategies employed by the students in order to progress the repertoire preparation. The notion of mobilization was grounded on Charlot and deepened by the Aristotelian principles. The employed strategies by the undergraduate students were investigated through two musical knowledge models: matrix of cognitive skills from Davidson and Scripp, and the conception of musicianship and the five forms of musical knowledge by Elliot, as well as interpreted according to an Aristotelian basis and together with data from the specific literature of instrumental practice. The present thesis argues that the mobilization of musical knowledge take place in a cyclic manner in qualitatively deepening in terms of musical production. The mobilized strategies during practice are different in nature and in goal. They can figure as learned or creative actions specifically created for the moment of practice. Also, such strategies can be employed as survey and self-regulation tools. By means of balance between actions and activities, and between survey and self-regulation mechanisms, musical knowledge is mobilized, improving the repertoire preparation.

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This research aimed at verifying how piano teachers think and reflect upon their practices. Considering that reflective thinking is developed by problems perceived on our practices (DEWEY, 1959; SCHÖN, 2000), that all people are reflexive (LIBÂNEO, 2002), this research had the following questions: What do piano teachers perceive as problems? What makes them to identify situations as problematic? How do they think and reflect upon these situations? In order to analyze and understand the data, this research used the concepts of routine thinking and reflective thinking by Dewey (1959), and the theory of knowledge, by Schön (2000), including knowledge on action, reflection in action and reflection about the action and the critical reflective thinking of Zeichner (1993, 1996), Contreras (2002), Kemmis (1985, 1987), e Smyth (1987). The methodology used was the case study (YIN, 2005; MERRIAN, 1988) based on the qualitative approach (BOGDAN and BIKLEN, 1994; BRESLER, 2000). The research was made with two teachers of piano, one of them from a public music school and the other one from a private music school. The data analysis showed that: 1) the teachers perceive different situations, depending on the problem they have at different times as a reference – the student, the school, their own experience; 2) the way they think and reflect on these situations depends on the references, opportunities and resources they have: their own experience as students, knowledge of common sense, training. Generally, not to achieve satisfactory results, justify the problem with external factors for their action or ignore such situations. These data characterized heir thoughts sometimes as a routine (DEWEY, 1959), sometimes as a reflexive thinking (DEWEY, 1959), showing that teachers operate much based on knowledge in action, and even in the reflection in action, demonstrating with less frequently situations of reflection about the action (SCHÖN, 2000). Also showed that teachers have difficulty in identifying and reflecting on the nature of the problems and rarely extend their thoughts to the social, political, historical of the problem (ZEICHNER, 1993, 1996; CONTRERAS, 2002; SMYTH, 1987;KEMMIS, 1987).

Full textThis research consist of a case study of a first-year Music Education major at the State University of Londrina that investigate the process of learning a new piano repertoire through a gestural approach. The methodology employed comprised three complementary techniques of data collection: video recording, semi-structured interviews, and participant observation. Considering the holistic and multimodal character of gesture (GODØY; LEMAN, 2010), a gestural approach to learning a new piece music demands the integration of musical knowledge in instrumental practice, as well as body consciousness. In this way, we investigated how gestures were constructed during eight weeks of piano lessons, how music theory concepts were integrated in instrumental practice and the changes observed in student's practice. The application of a gestural approach in the preparation of a new repertoire has contributed to develop fluency, expressiveness, musical understanding of musical structure and music theory, and body awareness. The strategies used during the eight weeks of classes aimed at understanding and expressing music through the perspective of gesture in a learning process centered on the body. These strategies also contributed to the organization of the learning process itself by providing tools for structuring the student's practice.

Full textThe present thesis discusses the research line in piano performance planning. It examined different research approaches and points of view of specialists in the music field through a critical reflection about the knowledge produced by empirical research. The goal was to investigate the subjects, especially the strategies, the theoretical framework, methodological procedures, learning process and the relationship between experimental research, case studies, survey and studies with interview. A critical analysis of the research studies considering the behavior of the musicians during practice, their strategies, the construction of the theoretical references and the elements involved was undertaken. The present work established two pillars: (1) theoretical, focused on the empirical research, and (2) practical, related to the personal experience of the author as the subject in a case study during his doctoral internship. During that time, the present author elaborated two practice strategies to reinforce memory retrieval and to aid him in succeeding in the Experimental Test II. As a result of relationship between these two pillars of construction in the investigative processes, the present work discusses basic points relating to empirical research, such as the investigative problems and the hierarchy between the experimenter and the subject. The author proposed a model of interaction between the Psychology and Music areas. It is aimed at examining the pedagogical implications based on the profound understanding of performance planning, as well as how to construct an instrumental performance at a level of excellence.

Full textThe aim of this study was to compare, in vitro, the resistance to compression strength of 30bovine roots among canines and incisors endodontically treated, divided into 3 groups with 10 roots each and restored with cast metallic post (Group 1), prefabricated fibre glass post (Group 2), and anatomical post (Group 3). All the roots, with a length of 15mm, were internally prepared so as to their cervical dentin wall thickness would be of 1,5mm, in order to enhance the width of the radicular canal. The space for the post was prepared with 10mm. The diameter of the glass fibre post chosen was the number 2, of the adopted system, so as to create a space between the glass fibre post and the radicular structure. Group 1 received post and cast metallic core cemented with zinc phosphate cement. Group 2 received prefabricated fibre glass post cemented with resin cement Panavia F and composite resin core Z100. Group 3 received a fibre glass post modeled inside the canal with composite resin Z100, cemented with resin cement Panavia F and composite resin core Z100. In all groups, all the roots were cemented with a metallic coping with zinc phosphate cement. The roots were mounted inside pvc pipes with chemically activated acrylic resin, and submitted to compression tests in a universal testing machine Kratos, model k2000MP. The compressive load was done in an angle of 135o in relation to the long axes of the roots, until the occurrence of failure or fracture. The amount of load correspondent to the occurrence of failure or fracture was statistically registered and analysed. The results revealed a statistical difference among groups. Group 1 presented a stronger resistance to fracture than the other groups, which did not present statistical difference. The roots restored with post and cast metallic core were the only ones that presented radicular fracture in the apical root third. The roots that were restored with fibre glass posts presented similar fractures, from the cervical root third to the middle root third.

Full textThe present thesis discusses the trajectories of three undergraduate Piano Performance students learning a new piano work during an academic semester. Qualitative research methods were used in multicase studies. The aim of those studies was to critically review the relation between the subjects beliefs, values and skills in relation to the actions taken throughout their practice of the pieces during the academic semester. Data collection consisted of: interviews, study reports, audio and video recordings of performances and report of performance cues gathered shortly after the performance. Those kinds of data fulfilled all phases and subprocesses of Zimmerman’s (2002) self-regulation model. The subject’s practice were guided by some specific trains of thoughts which ended up by influencing the outcomes. The dynamics and interplay between thought processes and other aspects of their practice trajectories were depicted as cycles of musical improvement during which different forms of inquiries were responsible for the most significant gains.

Full textThe objective of this thesis is to explore the theme of sustainability of public debt and public expenditure with an empirical focus on the Italian healthcare expenditure. Starting from a literature review, this work shows that sustainability have not an univocal and widely accepted definition and that macro economical point of view tend to prevail. At the same time the recent tension on public debt in European countries has highlighted the need of harmonized accountability systems capable to show the real level of public debt and public expenditure. The Italian healthcare system has represented a very interesting case to explore the effect of the implementation of an accrual system of accountability and the sustainability of public expenditure by the implementation of Healthcare recovery plan. This empirical analysis has been implemented by the use of a case study methodology. Results show that healthcare turnaround plan do not contain valid instrument of sustainability

Full textDuring the XIX century, the question of what it meant to restore a building was a point of debate between two influential characters, Eugène-Emmanuel Violletle- Duc and John Ruskin. Layer, with the effective arrival of preservation movements in the 1960s, architects through leaned towards restoration, rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of buildings as a maintenance procedure. However, current procedures of recycling of entire buildings become an important additional practice for a sustainable approach to urban development, especially regarding to industrial buildings which, over time, become obsolete to continue performing its function. The main objective of this research is the analysis of the construction process and subsequent adaptive reuse that occurred in the Fiat Lingotto factory building (Turin, Italy). Furthermore, through this case study, the procedures in its adaptive reuse will be discussed, through a critical analysis of both physical and conceptual aspects of the building. Conclusions evince most relevant reasons why Lingotto building has a distinguished architectural value to be preserved.
