Abstract:
This is a report on the possibility of using a Raspberry Pi as an intrusion detection system in a home environment to increase network security. The focus of this study was on how well two different generations of Raspberry Pi would be able to  handle network traffic while acting as an intrusion detection system. To examine this a testing environment was set up containing two workstation computers connected to a Raspberry Pi, each computer hosting a virtual machine. Tests measuring the network throughput as well as the CPU and memory usage were performed on each of the Raspberry Pi devices. Two models of Raspberry Pis were used; Raspberry Pi model B+ and Raspberry Pi 2 model B; each of them running the operating system Arch Linux ARM. The results of these tests were that both of the Raspberry Pis could be used as an intrusion detection system but has some limitations that could impede usage depending on the requirements of the user. Raspberry Pi 2 model B show benefits of its updated hardware by suffering lower throughput degradation than Raspberry Pi model B+, while using less of it's total CPU and memory capacity.

Abstract:
Conjugated Polymers have attracted a great deal of research interest in recent years due to their optoelectronic properties which makes them suitable for applications in organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) and organic photovoltaics. Their properties are strongly dependent on the electron-electron and electron-nuclear interactions as well as the disorder which is present in almost all systems at finite temperatures. In this thesis the optical properties of electronically neutral conjugated polymers will be investigated. The results obtained are general and applicable to a wide range of parameters. In order to compare these to experiment the optical properties of poly( paraphenylene), poly(para-phenylene vinylene), and derivatives have been calculated. In these polymers the primary photoexcitations are Frenkel excitons which can be described by the Frenkel-Holstein Hamiltonian, which explicitly takes into account the exciton-nuclear coupling. Disorder can be introduced into this model both as diagonal and off-diagonal disorder within the Hamiltonian. First the optical transitions in ordered, linear conjugated polymers are investigated. It is found that the length of the polymer has a direct spectroscopic signature in the emission spectrum. When off-diagonal disorder is introduced the excitons localise on portions of the chain and the length of these portions, the conjugation length, then shows a clear emission signature. As such, a disordered polymer can be described theoretically as a chain of shorter segments, which define chromophores in a polymer context. Following from these calculations the role of conformation was investigated and effects were observed that greatly determine the optical properties of non-linear polymers. Most notable the Herzberg-Teller effect, which renders symmetrically forbidden transitions weakly allowed and greatly affects the absorption and emission spectra. The signatures observed in these spectra allow the determination of the (coarse grained) conformation of the polymer, something that has been difficult to measure directly.

Abstract:

In this thesis we explore in particular the dynamics of a special type of quasi-particle in pi-conjugated materials termed polaron, the origin of which is intimately related to the strong interactions between the electronic and the vibrational degrees of freedom within these systems. In order to conduct such studies with the particular focus of each appended paper, we simultaneously solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and the lattice equation of motion with a three-dimensional extension of the famous Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model Hamiltonian. In particular, we demonstrate in Paper I the applicability of the method to model transport dynamics in molecular crystals in a region were neither band theory nor perturbative treatments such as the Holstein model and extended Marcus theory apply. In Paper II we expand the model Hamiltonian to treat the revolution of phenylene rings around the sigma-bonds and demonstrate the great impact of stochastic ring torsion on the intra-chain mobility in conjugated polymers using poly[phenylene vinylene] (PPV) as a model system. Finally, in Paper III we go beyond the original purpose of the methodology and utilize its great flexibility to study radiationless relaxations of hot excitons.

Full text
Abstract:
PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome ten) is a potent tumor suppressor. PTEN’s tumor suppressor action is rooted in its phosphatase function on the lipid substrate phosphatidylinositol-(3,4,5)-trisphosphate (PI(3,4,5)P3). PTEN’s enzymatic activity is specific for the third position of the inositol headgroup. PI(3,4,5)P3 is a second messenger that is a part of the PI3K-Akt pathway, and its dysregulation leads to constitutively activated AKT. The result of AKT activation is cell cycle progression, motility, cell growth, and proliferation, and consequently, overaction leads to neoplastic growth and tumorigenesis. PTEN antagonizes this pathway by regulating PI(3,4,5)P3 population through its phosphatase activity which produces the lipid PI(4,5)P2 (phosphatidylinositol-(4,5)-bisphosphate). A result of PTEN’s function is that its activity must be localized at the PM (plasma membrane) since this is where its substrate resides. Additionally, the mole percent of the phosphoinositide family of lipids is small. From highest percent composition to lowest the phosphoinositide species in the PM rank as PI(4,5)P2 (~2%), PI(4)P (~1%), and PI(3,4,5)P3 (~0.02%). For PTEN to turn over its substrate, it must first translocate from the cytosol to the PM and then search through the plasma membrane for this rare but high in demand lipid. This is at the center of the scarcity paradox. This work explores how PTEN may overcome this paradox by using its multiple lipid binding domains to interact with multiple lipid partners to efficiently localize it toward a region with a high probability of having PI(3,4,5)P3. This hypothesis is tested using two kinetic methodologies. First, we use pre- steady state stopped-flow spectrometry to determine the rates that govern PTEN-lipid binding. Second, we use single-molecule total internal reflectance fluorescence (smTIRF) microscopy to resolve the diffusion coefficients and dwell times of bound PTEN on SLBs supported lipid bilayers (SLBs). We test PTEN against various lipid compositions to determine how the bilayer structure in addition to the chemistry of the lipid influences the enzyme’s binding. These compositions include PI(4,5)P2, PI phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphatidylserine (PS), PI(4,5)P2/PI and PI(4,5)P2/PS. In addition to this kinetic work, we will also present a novel model membrane platform that takes advantage of a microfluidic device to develop lateral lipid gradients in SLBs. This microfluidic platform, in the future, will allow for the investigation of the dynamic behavior of proteins interacting with lipids but with a bilayer that has a structure recapitulating polarized membranes like in chemotaxing cells.

Abstract:
To calculate realistic models of objects with Ni in their atmospheres, accurate atomic data for the relevant ionization stages need to be included in model atmosphere calculations. In the context of white dwarf stars, we investigate the effect of changing the Ni IV-VI bound-bound and bound-free atomic data on model atmosphere calculations. Models including photoionization cross-section (PICS) calculated with AUTOSTRUCTURE show significant flux attenuation of up to similar to 80 per cent shortward of 180 angstrom in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) region compared to a model using hydrogenic PICS. Comparatively, models including a larger set of Ni transitions left the EUV, UV, and optical continua unaffected. We use models calculated with permutations of these atomic data to test for potential changes to measured metal abundances of the hot DA white dwarf G191-B2B. Models including AUTOSTRUCTURE PICS were found to change the abundances of N and O by as much as similar to 22 per cent compared to models using hydrogenic PICS, but heavier species were relatively unaffected. Models including AUTOSTRUCTURE PICS caused the abundances of N/O IV and V to diverge. This is because the increased opacity in the AUTOSTRUCTURE PICS model causes these charge states to form higher in the atmosphere, more so for N/O V. Models using an extended line list caused significant changes to the Ni IV-V abundances. While both PICS and an extended line list cause changes in both synthetic spectra and measured abundances, the biggest changes are caused by using AUTOSTRUCTURE PICS for Ni.

Abstract:
Edge AI is a growing area. The use of deep learning on low cost machines, such as the Raspberry Pi, may be used more than ever due to the easy use, availability, and high performance. A quantized pretrained SSD object detection model was deployed to a Raspberry Pi 4 B to evaluate if the throughput is sufficient for doing real-time object recognition. With input size of 300x300, an inference time of 185 ms was obtained. This is an improvement as of the previous model; Raspberry Pi 3 B+, 238 ms with a input size of 96x96 which was obtained in a related study. Using a lightweight model is for the benefit of higher throughput as a trade-off for lower accuracy. To compensate for the loss of accuracy, using transfer learning and tensorflow, a custom object detection model has been trained by fine-tuning a pretrained SSD model. The fine-tuned model was trained on images scraped from the web with people in winter landscape. The pretrained model was trained to detect different objects, including people in various environments. Predictions shows that the custom model performs significantly better doing detections on people in snow. The conclusion from this is that web scraping can be used for fine-tuning a model. However, the images scraped is of bad quality and therefore it is important to thoroughly clean and select which images that is suitable to keep, given a specific application.

Abstract:
There currently does not exist a way for creating digital twins’information and transferring it between networks , but container-basedvirtualization could be a possible solution. One of those techniques isDocker, which is an engine to isolate a software and can bring benefits toimprove the workflow of software development. Making changes withDocker is very fast as it uses the copy-on-write model, it can containerizeapplications in minutes. This study will design a scenario with twodevices sending a data packet between each other to simulate theproblem. The results from the study is further investigate and analyze toanswer the question of whether the container-based virtualization can bea possible solution for creating digital twins. The result from the scenariois Docker works equal or worse when used with a low-cost computinghardware compared to a computing hardware. It is speculated that theresources used in the images is a factor that can affect the performance, but the hardware is also another factor that can affect it.

Wang, Xiaoyan. "Modeling and Implementation of Controller for Switched Reluctance Motor With Ac Small Signal Model." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35423.

Full text
Abstract:
As traditional control schemes, open-loop Hysteresis and closed-loop pulse-width-modulation (PWM) have been used for the switched reluctance motor (SRM) current controller. The Hysteresis controller induces large unpleasant audible noises because it needs to vary the switching frequency to maintain constant Hysteresis current band. In contract, the PWM controller is very quiet but difficult to design proper gains and control bandwidth due to the nonlinear nature of the SRM. In this thesis, the ac small signal modeling technique is proposed for linearization of the SRM model such that a conventional PI controller can be designed accordingly for the PWM current controller. With the linearized SRM model, the duty-cycle to output transfer function can be derived, and the controller can be designed with sufficient stability margins. The proposed PWM controller has been simulated to compare the performance against the conventional Hysteresis controller based system. It was found that through the frequency spectrum analysis, the noise spectra in audible range disappeared with the fixed switching frequency PWM controller, but was pronounced with the conventional Hysteresis controller. A hardware prototype is then implemented with digital signal processor to verify the quiet nature of the PWM controller when running at 20 kHz switching frequency. The experimental results also indicate a stable current loop operation.

Abstract:
Mechanical ventilators are devices in critical care to assist breathing in case of expiratory dysfunction. The expiratory valve is a critical component to the ventilator as it controls the pressure in the patient’s lungs. The design process of a new expiratory valve assembly is a time consuming one due to the wide range of possible design solutions both the voice-coil actuators and membrane valves typically used in ventilators. This thesis evaluates the possibility of creating and using analytical models for model based development to speed up the early design phases of a expiratory valve assembly. The main components, voice-coil actuator and membrane valve are modelled separately and experimentally verified. A complete expiratory system model and hardware-in-the-loop test setup are constructed in order to explore how well can the dynamic properties and control performance of valve assembly be predicted. Finally various questions in the valve assembly design are explored and a new design is proposed to demonstrate the capabilities of the model based approach. The resulting voice-coil and membrane valve models can be considered accurate enough for fast exploration of the design space, as an error rate below 10% is reached without manual tuning for each design.

Abstract:
The need to have mechanisms and Technologies for the control of blood glucose levels is essential for people who have diabetes of any type. This disease still has no cure and is one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack, stroke, renal complications etc. The number of diabetic people in the world and in Brazil is alarming, in addition, Brazilians occupy the fourth place in the world ranking according to the last survey of the year, 2015, made by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). Several studies has been conducted in order to obtain the best glycemic control of people with diabetes, one of the current forms of control under investigation is the development of an artificial pancreas. Through the union of three systems: glucose monitoring system, control algorithm and actuator system through an insulin infusion pump, it is possible to obtain efficient results in glycemic control as they already have studies. This work consists of developing a prototype of a low-cost and low-power embedded control system, Hardware in Loop (HIL), based on Arduino nano microcontroller, which can control the blood glucose level of a model of a type 1 diabetes patient, considering some perturbations and noises, using the Kalman filter as estimator. The results obtained with the implementation of the controller are analyzed in order to obtain a better performance.

Abstract:
This thesis is devoted to the modern management concept of Corporate Performance Management (CPM, enterprise performance management) and its implementation in selected small company. The first part focuses on the description of the concept of CPM and its individual components (processes, methodologies, metrics and applications). The theoretical part also deals with selected implementation procedures and available CPM maturity models. In the second part a particular small company is introduced to the reader, together with its activities, organizational structure and the reasons behind their interest in CPM. It is then followed by an analysis of the company, its CPM maturity and proposed steps for CPM implementation. These steps are based on the framework presented in this work, which was created by combining different approaches to CPM implementation and available CPM maturity model. The third part, devoted to the implementation of CPM, starts with an analysis of the CPM in the cloud market, followed by a review of two selected solutions. To select the appropriate application, a multi-criterion model is created. The description of actual implementation, and evaluation of its results are included in the last chapter.

Abstract:
Many high-end sophisticated devices are being replaced by small single-board IoT devices. It is estimated that by the year 2025 there will be about 75 billion IoT connected devices worldwide. This project buttresses the earlier statements. The project will be focused on how to deploy a complex AI face-recognition model on a simple, less power consumption, single-board IoT device Raspberry Pi3. Also, to simplify the whole process of deploying the AI model on Raspberry Pi3 by dockerizing. By just pulling the respective docker image and running it on the end device (Raspberry Pi3), we can make face recognition happen. Finally, the obtained results will be sent to the cloud (Fiware) using NGSI API. Instead of sending the whole video feed to the Cloud platform and performing the computing there, we managed to perform the computing at the edge and then send the results to the cloud and making the results accessible to requested users.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The oscillations of neutral mesons are a manifestation of the fact that mass eigenstates are a superposition of flavour eigenstates. Since they belong to the class of \textit{flavour changing neutral current} processes, they cannot be mediated at tree level in the Standard Model and thus constitute a powerful probe of new physics at high energy scales. Violation of the charge-parity symmetry may lead to different mixing rates for a particle produced as a meson or as an anti-meson. The observation of large CP asymmetries would also be a hint of physics beyond the Standard Model. The LHCb experiment, located at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, has been designed to perform precision measurements of the decays involving the \textit{beauty} and \text{charm} quark. In charm physics, the LHCb experiment realized important measurements, such as the first observation of neutral charmed mesons oscillations ($D^0$) from a single measurement. Here, oscillations are suppressed and CP violation is expected to be tiny ($\sim\mathcal{O}(10^{-3})$) within the SM. This thesis aims to measure the charm mixing parameters and search for CP violation with the decay-time-dependent ratio of $D^0\to K^+\pi^-$ to $D^0\to K^-\pi^+$ rates and charge conjugate processes. The datasets used in the analysis were recorded by LHCb during 2015 and 2016 in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text{TeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $0.3\text{fb}^{-1}$ and $1.6\text{fb}^{-1}$, respectively. In the limit of CP symmetry, the mixing parameters are determined to be $x'^2=(0.100\pm 0.027 \pm 0.010)\times 10^{-3}$, $y'=(4.086\pm 0.52 \pm 0.20)\times 10^{-3}$ and $R_{D}=(3.553\pm 0.031\pm 0.010)\times 10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, respectively. When the measurement is performed separately for $D^0$ and $\Dzb$ mesons, there is no evidence for CP violation.

Abstract:
The calculation of frequency-dependent cable parameters is essential for simulations of transient phenomena in electrical power systems. The simulation of transients is more complicated than the calculation of currents and voltages in the nominal frequency range. The model has to represent the frequency dependency and the wave propagation behavior of cable lines. The introduced model combines an improved subconductor method for the determination of the frequency-dependent parameters and a PI section wave propagation model. The subconductor method considers the skin and proximity effect in all conductors for frequency ranges up to few megahertz. The subconductor method method yields accurate results. The wave propagation part of the cable model is based on a cascaded PI section model. A modal transformation technique has been used for the calculation in the time domain. The frequency-dependent elements of the related modal transformation matrices have been fitted with rational functions. The frequency dependence of cable parameters has been reproduced using a vector fitting algorithm and has been implemented into an resistor-inductor-capacitor network (RLC network) for each PI section. The proposed full model has been validated with measured data.

The separation methods are reduced applications as a result of the operational costs, the low output and the long time to separate the uids. But, these treatment methods are important because of the need for extraction of unwanted contaminants in the oil production. The water and the concentration of oil in water should be minimal (around 40 to 20 ppm) in order to take it to the sea. Because of the need of primary treatment, the objective of this project is to study and implement algorithms for identification of polynomial NARX (Nonlinear Auto-Regressive with Exogenous Input) models in closed loop, implement a structural identification, and compare strategies using PI control and updated on-line NARX predictive models on a combination of three-phase separator in series with three hydro cyclones batteries. The main goal of this project is to: obtain an optimized process of phase separation that will regulate the system, even in the presence of oil gushes; Show that it is possible to get optimized tunings for controllers analyzing the mesh as a whole, and evaluate and compare the strategies of PI and predictive control applied to the process. To accomplish these goals a simulator was used to represent the three phase separator and hydro cyclones. Algorithms were developed for system identification (NARX) using RLS(Recursive Least Square), along with methods for structure models detection. Predictive Control Algorithms were also implemented with NARX model updated on-line, and optimization algorithms using PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization). This project ends with a comparison of results obtained from the use of PI and predictive controllers (both with optimal state through the algorithm of cloud particles) in the simulated system. Thus, concluding that the performed optimizations make the system less sensitive to external perturbations and when optimized, the two controllers show similar results with the assessment of predictive control somewhat less sensitive to disturbances
Abstract:
The knowledge about the behavior of cables is substantial in cases of transients or in cases of faults. However, there are only a few models that are tailored to the current requirements for calculations of transient phenomena in three-phase cable systems. These models are based on complex structures. PI-section cable models with simple structures were previously qualified only for calculations in the frequency domain. A new full frequency-dependent cable model to simulate transient phenomena is introduced and validated. The model is based on lumped parameters with cascaded frequency-dependent PI-sections. For the implementation and the integration in simulation tools, it is important to investigate the impact of the PI-section parameters to the accuracy, the stability and the mathematical robustness. In this work, the impact of the frequency dependence of cable parameters, the length distribution and the number of PI-sections on the results of the developed three-phase cable model have been discussed. For simulations in the time domain, two algorithms have been presented to optimize the number of PI-sections based on a specified accuracy.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Electric power systems have been in existence for over a century. Electric power transmission line systems play an important role in carrying electrical power to customers everywhere. The number of transmission lines in power systems is increasing as global demand for power has increased. Parallel transmission lines are widely used in the modern transmission system for higher reliability. The parallel lines method has economic and environmental advantages over single circuit. A fault that occurs on a power transmission line will cause long outage time if the fault location is not located as quickly as possible. The faster the fault location is found, the sooner the system can be restored and outage time can be reduced. The main focus of this research is to develop a new accurate fault location algorithm for parallel transmission lines to identify the fault location for long double-circuit transmission lines, taking into consideration mutual coupling impedance, mutual coupling admittance, and shunt capacitance of the line. In this research, the equivalent PI circuit based on a distributed parameter line model for positive, negative, and zero sequence networks have been constructed for system analysis during the fault. The new method uses only the voltage and current from one end of parallel lines to calculate the fault distance. This research approaches the problem by derivation all equations from positive sequence, negative sequence, and zero sequence network by using KVL and KCL. Then, the fault location is obtained by solving these equations. EMTP has been utilized to generate fault cases under various fault conditions with different fault locations, fault types and fault resistances. Then the algorithm is evaluated using the simulated data. The results have shown that the developed algorithm can achieve highly accurate estimates and is promising for practical applications.

Abstract:
This thesis provides a fully-abstract (set theoretical) model for the finite pi-calculus with respect to late-bisimulation and late-equivalence relations. This is achieved by amalgamating the works by M. P. Fiore, E. Moggi and D. Sangiorgi, and I. Stark. In their respective works the authors construct categorical models, and define a meta-language in which the finite pi-calculus can be interpreted. We discuss the general properties a categorical model should satisfy to be considered an appropriate model for the finite pi-calculus. In particular, I show that the categorical model based on the syntax provides a fully abstract model for the finite pi-calculus. Finally, I include all the details of the model which were often omitted by the above authors. We extend the discussion by examining alternative categorical constructs for the model of the finite pi-calculus, for example we use doubly closed categories which are a main focus of Bunched Logic by P. W. O'Hearn and D. J. Pym.

Abstract:
This work belongs to the domain of numerical simulation on heterogeneous distributed platforms such as grids. This type of platform is characterized by possible changes in execution conditions and a significant probability of some components failure. An application running in such an environment must be adaptable to its execution context and fault tolerant. Facing the growing complexity of implementing computation cases on grid computing, we propose a software platform which solves numerical computation cases in a distributed heterogeneous environment. Our work provides a solution based on a mobile agent system, which allows an application to adapt to change in its execution environment. At first, we use the higher-order pi calculus language to specify a « farm of workers » able to take part in solving any type of computation case. Then we set the properties that characterize the system's correct execution with a temporal logic TCTL. In order to do this, we perform a temporal modeling system based on terms defined by the formal specification in pi calculus. To achieve this transformation, we define a translation of terms written in pi calculus into timed automata. The properties are verified with the UppAal tool. To validate this modeling work, we develop the MCA (for Mobile Computing Architecture) framework. It offers a set of tools which facilitate the implementation of distributed heterogeneous components in order to solve computation cases. These components, mobile or not, are developed with a library written in Java and which uses Jini and JavaSpaces technologies. Finally, our framework is evaluated through the resolution of three different computation cases. Each of these experiments, performed on a 20 node cluster allow us to highlight our framework's main characteristics : programming simplicity, low overhead in execution time without the fault tolerance activation and efficient fault tolerance

Al-Karooni, Dhia Mohsen. "The transfer of modal content in translation." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1996. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1274/.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis seeks to examine the grammatico-pragmatic problem of translating modality from English into Arabic (two formally and genetically different languages) and vice versa, with the aim of suggesting tentative ways that would tackle such a problem for the Arab translator who finds himself/herself in a situation where only specific choices of TL modal expressions would make the translation acceptable. Translating is regarded, here, as an overall operation performed on two languages - an operation based on a systematic comparison of two linguistic systems and the functions they each perform at a higher level. It is taken to mean a code-switching operation, which implies that a sequence of symbols from one language is substituted for a sequence of symbols in another. This code-switching always operates as a chain with an intervening time occupied by a segment of interpretation during which the intended content is transferred into the target language by the translator. In this study, use is made of concepts and terminology provided by linguistics and translation theory, both of which deal with language as a communicative activity. The research conducted here deals with translation between Arabic and English, with special focus on modality as a linguistic as well as a cultural strategy of communication. Therefore, modality can be constructed in the TL only through overall translation by interpretation where equivalence becomes the translator's memory rather than his/her dictionary. Here, the overall process of translating the modal content thrives best by freeing itself from surface constraints, i.e. constraints imposed by the surface structure of the source text.
