Abstract:
This study aimed to determine whether associations between the perceived environment and physical activity are moderated by urban-rural status among midolder aged adults. Environmental (safety, aesthetics, physical activity environment) and physical activity (total, leisure, transport) data from 3,888 adults (55 to 65 years) from urban and rural areas of Victoria, Australia, were analyzed. Multinomial logistic regression examined interactions between urban-rural status and environments in associations with physical activity. Significant (P < .05) interactions were evident and indicated positive associations only among older rural adults for both safety and aesthetics with total and transport physical activity (e.g., rural adults reporting higher safety were 91% to 118% more likely to have higher activity than rural adults reporting low safety). In contrast, the physical activity environment was positively associated with leisure activity among only urban adults. Findings suggest that some tailoring of physical activity promotion strategies targeting the environment may be required for urban and rural midolder aged adults.

Abstract:
Abstract: The present study aimed to analyze the physiological, physical, technical, and tactical responses of young soccer players according to the result in small-sided games. The sample consisted of 39 players (15.9 ± 1.0 years of age) grouped by the outcome of the games, winning (17), drawing (6), and losing (16). Physical and physiological responses were quantified using a portable GPS and a cardiac monitor. The rating of perceived exertion was measured using the BORG 6-20 scale. Technical-tactical responses were assessed according to the frequency and quality of execution of technical skills and core tactical principles. Shapiro-Wilk, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann Whitney U and Multinomial Logistic Regression tests were used in the analysis. Significance was set at 5%. Players in the groups “winning” and “drawing” covered greater distances in low-intensity running and shorter distances in walking. The “drawing” group executed more passes than the “losing” group (14.0 vs 10.0). The “winning” group showed greater efficiency of execution in three offensive and three defensive principles compared to the “losing” group. It was found that the increase in the efficiency of execution of offensive and defensive principles increases the chances of the players being in “drawing” (11 to 24%) or “winning” (10% to 21%) groups in relation to “losing”. It is concluded that the physiological, physical, technical, and tactical responses influence competitive success, and the increase in tactical efficiency results in more chances to achieve winning or drawing.

Abstract:
Abstract: The aim of this study was to establish which final game actions discriminate final victories and defeats in women volleyball formative stages during ended sets, which are solved by regulation with a minimal advantage of two points. A total of 57 sets were analyzed in infantile category and 69 sets in cadet category during the national volleyball championship at school age (12-16), Valladolid 2008 and Huelva 2009. Statistics analysis shows differences between the condition of both the winner and the loser teams in sets in the positive attack in infantile category and in positive block and error in cadet category. Discriminative analysis, statistical test that determines those most significant game actions when establishing the differences existing between the winner and loser teams, shows how to predict victory and defeat in the ended sets regarding the positive attack, negative service and error in infantile category and positive block and error in cadet category. These ones suggest that during decisive set moments in both categories, either technical gestures control or errors which arise from a regulation infraction may predict their final performance.Key words: Female volleyball, notational analysis, play action, scholar age.

Abstract:

Lewis, Virginia M. Myth, Locality, and Identity in Pindar's Sicilian Odes. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190910310.001.0001.

Abstract:
Myth, Locality, and Identity in Pindar’s Sicilian Odes argues that Pindar engages in a striking, innovative style of mythmaking that represents and shapes Sicilian identities in his epinician odes for Sicilian victors in the fifth century BCE. While Sicily has been thought to be lacking in local traditions for Pindar to celebrate, this book argues that the Sicilian odes offer examples of the formation of local traditions: the monster Typho whom Zeus defeated to become king of the gods, for example, now lives beneath Mt. Aitna; Persephone receives the island of Sicily as a gift from Zeus; and the Peloponnesian river Alpheos travels to Syracuse in pursuit of the local spring nymph Arethusa. By weaving regional and Panhellenic myth into the local landscape, as the book shows, Pindar infuses physical places with meaning and thereby contextualizes people, cities, and their rulers within a wider Greek framework. During this time period, Greek Sicily experienced a unique set of political circumstances: the inhabitants were continuously being displaced, cities were founded and resettled, and political leaders rose and fell from power in rapid succession. This book offers the first sustained analysis of myth in Pindar’s odes for Sicilian victors across the island that accounts for their shared cultural contexts.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter traces Dickens’s engagement in The Mystery of Edwin Drood with the nineteenth-century psychological concept of double consciousness, a condition in which individuals seemed to possess two discrete mental lives. According to John Forster, the novel was to conclude with the enigmatic John Jasper’s relation of the murder of his nephew “as if, not he the culprit, but some other man, were the tempted”; Jasper, in other words, was apparently to be plagued by a psychic split that would render introspection largely useless as a means to know the mind. But this chapter suggests that the novel finally seeks to dismiss the notion that Jasper’s mind is so rigidly divided, precisely because of the way double consciousness had been explained by 1870 through both the double brain theory—thereby offering the condition as evidence of the physiological basis of mind—and through theories of reflex thought that narrowed the bounds of consciousness and called into question the agency that might be exerted through any such immaterial entity as the will. Such material explanations of double consciousness, this chapter suggests, equally shed light on the efforts of physical theorists to redefine “soul” so that the word became no more than a synonym for consciousness. But because of Drood’s unfinished state, Dickens’s position in relation to psycho-physiology in this novel is never made entirely clear to most readers, and the concept of double consciousness consequently only imports into the novel the various physical meanings that Dickens sought to refute.
