Chimenti, Dale, Stanislav Rokhlin, and Peter Nagy. Physical Ultrasonics of Composites. Oxford University Press, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195079609.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Physical Ultrasonics of Composites is a rigorous introduction to the characterization of composite materials by means of ultrasonic waves. Composites are treated here not simply as uniform media, but as inhomogeneous layered anisotropic media with internal structure characteristic of composite laminates. The objective here is to concentrate on exposing the singular behavior of ultrasonic waves as they interact with layered, anisotropic materials, materials which incorporate those structural elements typical of composite laminates. This book provides a synergistic description of both modeling and experimental methods in addressing wave propagation phenomena and composite property measurements. After a brief review of basic composite mechanics, a thorough treatment of ultrasonics in anisotropic media is presented, along with composite characterization methods. The interaction of ultrasonic waves at interfaces of anisotropic materials is discussed, as are guided waves in composite plates and rods. Waves in layered media are developed from the standpoint of the "Stiffness Matrix", a major advance over the conventional, potentially unstable Transfer Matrix approach. Laminated plates are treated both with the stiffness matrix and using Floquet analysis. The important influence on the received electronic signals in ultrasonic materials characterization from transducer geometry and placement are carefully exposed in a dedicated chapter. Ultrasonic wave interactions are especially susceptible to such influences because ultrasonic transducers are seldom more than a dozen or so wavelengths in diameter. The book ends with a chapter devoted to the emerging field of air-coupled ultrasonics. This new technology has come of age with the development of purpose-built transducers and electronics and is finding ever wider applications, particularly in the characterization of composite laminates.

Abstract:
Communication takes place when two or more individuals interact via signal release and reception. This chapter focuses on chemical communication among arthropods, first, discussing the physical attributes of chemical communication and following up with examples that demonstrate the importance of chemical communication as a mediator of behavioral, ecological and evolutionary processes. In doing so, both the functional (i.e. why) and causal (i.e. how) aspects of chemical communication are considered. The examples are drawn from a broad range of topics, including mating conflict (and resolution), honest signals (e.g. marking pheromones), deceptive signals (e.g. sexual deception by orchids to exploit pollinators) and impacts on population dynamics via non-consumptive impacts (e.g. alarm pheromones of aphids). Finally, most of the examples illustrate the subtle and contextual nature of chemical communication making the case that to understand chemical communication one must understand the chemical communicators and not just the chemical compounds that mediate their inter-individual interactions.

Marks II, Robert J. Handbook of Fourier Analysis & Its Applications. Oxford University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195335927.001.0001.

Abstract:
Fourier analysis has many scientific applications - in physics, number theory, combinatorics, signal processing, probability theory, statistics, option pricing, cryptography, acoustics, oceanography, optics and diffraction, geometry, and other areas. In signal processing and related fields, Fourier analysis is typically thought of as decomposing a signal into its component frequencies and their amplitudes. This practical, applications-based professional handbook comprehensively covers the theory and applications of Fourier Analysis, spanning topics from engineering mathematics, signal processing and related multidimensional transform theory, and quantum physics to elementary deterministic finance and even the foundations of western music theory. As a definitive text on Fourier Analysis, Handbook of Fourier Analysis and Its Applications is meant to replace several less comprehensive volumes on the subject, such as Processing of Multifimensional Signals by Alexandre Smirnov, Modern Sampling Theory by John J. Benedetto and Paulo J.S.G. Ferreira, Vector Space Projections by Henry Stark and Yongyi Yang and Fourier Analysis and Imaging by Ronald N. Bracewell. In addition to being primarily used as a professional handbook, it includes sample problems and their solutions at the end of each section and thus serves as a textbook for advanced undergraduate students and beginning graduate students in courses such as: Multidimensional Signals and Systems, Signal Analysis, Introduction to Shannon Sampling and Interpolation Theory, Random Variables and Stochastic Processes, and Signals and Linear Systems.

Abstract:
This chapter, takes a broad look at insect acoustic communication, by including near-field and far-field sound, as well as substrate vibration, as signals. These mechanical disturbances differ greatly in their physical properties—they propagate in their natural environments over distances that can span from a few millimetres up to several hundred metres. Therefore, background information is provided to understand how the insect sound-emitting systems for the different signals work and in which behavioral contexts they are used. Evidence is also provided to describe the substantial changes signals undergo on their way to receivers, the effects of background noise on communication and how unintended receivers may represent costs in this system. Finally, a short overview of the structure and evolution of the tremendous diversity of sensory receptors is presented.

Abstract:
Notwithstanding the advances of the past 40 years in imaging—which is, in effect, an extension of the examination—physical signs remain central to the physician’s assessment of patients, especially those with acute illness. Failure to detect these signs contributes to misdiagnosis. To be effective clinicians, physicians must have a competent examination technique, and also need a clear understanding of what the signs can and can’t reveal in a given clinical situation.

Abstract:
Flocks of birds, schools of fish and swarms of locusts display amazing forms of collective motion, while huge numbers of glow worms can emit light signals with almost unbelievable synchronization. These and many other collective phenomena in animal societies take place according to laws very similar to those governing the collective behavior in inanimate nature, such as the magnetization of iron and light radiation of lasers. During recent years, this has led to the study of swarm behavior as a challenging new field of science, in which ideas from the physical world are applied in order to understand the formation and structure of animal swarms. It has thus become clear that the collective behavior of animal swarms emerges in a self-organized way, without the need of any overall director. In this book, different swarm phenomena of the animal world are presented and compared with their counterparts in physics, in a conceptual and non-technical way, addressed to a general readership.
