Full textAlginates form transparent hydrogels in aqueous solution upon addition of some divalent cations. This property is mostly due to the formation of junction zones involving (1->4)-a-L-guluronan sequences on adjacent polymer chains. Oligomers of alginates were used as molecular bricks for the synthesis of biohybrid polymers featuring (1->4)-a-L-guluronan sequences as side chains. Rheology and Light Scattering have been applied to investigate their ionotropic gelation. In addition, an atomistic picture of the Ca2+-driven side chain associations was also provided thanks to Molecular Modeling and Atomic Force Spectroscopy. Biohybrid polymers carrying (1->4)-a-L-guluronan residues formed soft and transparent hydrogels in the presence of Ca2+. The addition of either guluronan, or mannuronan blocks to the pre-formed gel reduced its strength almost with the same efficiency. A molecular dynamics investigation of fully charged (1->4)-a-L-guluronan sequences in the presence of a neutralizing amount of Ca2+ ions suggested that about 8 repeating units may be sufficient to the spontaneous formation of junction zones. Furthermore, conformational analysis of (1->4)-a-L-guluronan chain having 12 repeating units in duplexes revealed a wide variety of accessible conformations, a feature consistent with the general difficulty in obtaining crystals of Ca2+-guluronate with suitable lateral dimensions for crystallographic studies. The adhesion forces between homo-alginate oligomers in the presence of Ca2+ measured by Atomic Force Spectroscopy showed that the strength of interactions increased in the following order: M-M < M-G or G-M < G-G. One of the most significant findings to emerge from this study is that mannuronan blocks complexed via calcium ions can be involved in both homotypic and heterotypic associations. This result is consistent with the detection of aggregates observed for mannuronan oligomers by Light Scattering during the addition of CaCl2. Thus, M-blocks also contribute to the gel formation but their strength seemed to be however weaker than G-blocks

Full textWireless technology is a key enabler of the promises of Industry 4.0 (Smart Manufacturing). As such, wireless technology will be adopted as a principal mode of communication within the factory beginning with the factory enterprise and eventually being adopted for use within the factory workcell. Factory workcell communication has particular requirements on latency, reliability, scale, and security that must first be met by the wireless communication technology used. Wireless is considered a non-ideal form of communication in that when compared to its wired counterparts, it is considered less reliable (lossy) and less secure. These possible impairments lead to delay and loss of data in industrial automation system where determinism, security, and safety is considered paramount. This thesis investigates the wireless requirements of the factory workcell and applicability of existing wireless technology, it presents a modeling approach to discovery of architecture and data flows using SysML, it provides a method for the use of graph databases to the organization and analysis of performance data collected from a testbed environment, and finally provides an approach to using machine learning in the evaluation of cyberphysical system performance

Full textIn this work, the fate and biodegradation of slowly biodegradable organic matter contained in wastewaters were investigated. The hydrolysis process was particularly targeted as many sources proved that it controls the fate of the considered substrate. First, a synopsis of the literature results related to this topic as well as internal results were investigated especially in terms of respirometric aspects (OUR measurement) in order to identify differences and/or similarities between the experiments and, thus, address gaps in knowledge of the mechanisms that are involved in the hydrolysis of this matter. Then, in the second part of this thesis, experimental data from batch respirometric tests (performed in our laboratory), involving typical slowly biodegradable matter that are found in wastewaters (e.g. Particulate settleable solids, toilet paper…), were confronted to conventional (IAWQ models) and non-conventional models to evaluate the efficiencies of those models to describe the hydrolysis step. In the third part of this thesis, based on hypotheses, a novel conceptual framework was developed in order to enhance the description of the hydrolysis process. The physical properties (density, size, shape) of the components (bacteria and substrate) were taken into account in this model. Finally, in the fourth and last chapter of this thesis, the specific role of each bacterial population involved in the biodegradation of slowly biodegradable organic matter was assessed. It was here clearly evidenced that the hydrolysis of PSS in activated sludge processes appears more influenced by the initially adsorbed bacteria onto the sewage than by the added AS-inoculum concentration

Full textThe main objectif of this thesis is to evaluate the contribution of a dynamic interpolation method to improve the representation of small scale ocean processes in altimetric maps. The current resolution of these maps constructed by a statistical optimal interpolation technique, is well adapted to the study of the mesoscale variability but does not allow us to observe structures of sizes smaller than 150-200km, largely due to the spatio-temporal sampling of the data. The dynamic interpolation method is based on a one-and-a-half layer quasi-geostrophic (QG) propagation model, aims to recreate part of the temporal evolution of small oceanic structures using the local dynamics. In this study, we apply this method to the western Mediterranean Sea. First we evaluate the QG propagator's capacity to represent the dynamics in this region. We then use this propagator to perform the dynamic interpolation in a spatially idealized case, comparing the reconstructed fields with a fine-resolution numerical model. The results show a general improvement compared to a linear interpolation over a period of 5-10 days. There is spatial and temporal disparity in the performance of the method, with a greater improvement for the regions of high variability and during the winter period. We explored ways of complexifying the QG propagator to better represent the dynamics of the region, influenced by the strong local atmospheric forcing, the geometry of the bassin and its bathymetry. In a second study, we evaluated the contribution of this dynamical interpolation method for mapping real alongtrack altimetric data. For this study, covariance structures derived from the QG model's evolution are integrated into an optimal interpolation scheme. The resulting dynamical interpolated maps are compared to the current altimetric maps. This study, which participates in the preparation of the exploitation of the future high resolution data of the SWOT mission, demonstrates the effectiveness of a relatively simple model to improve the resolution of the altimetric maps. Nevertheless, all of these results reveal the difficulty to optimally parameterize this mapping method to caracterize the dynamics in a region which presents a strong spatial and temporal variability. This work also highlights the need to better exploit the independant data to rigorously evaluate the improvement at small scales, which have significant impacts on the dynamics of the mesoscale, particularly on energy transfers within the ocean and on physico-biological interactions
