The chapter presents a case of radial neuropathy—specifically, a patient who presented with weakness in his left hand after a fall 2 months earlier. The patient had significant weakness in the fingers of the left hand on physical examination. The assessment process is outlined, along with differential diagnosis of radial nerve entrapment at the spiral groove and posterior interosseous neuropathy. Diagnostic pearls, physical examination findings, and indications for surgical intervention are discussed. This paper explores alternatives to metaphysical foundationalism, the view that grounding relations determine vertical chains that terminate in something fundamental and ungrounded. Rather than offering an exhaustive taxonomy or wide-ranging claims about metaphysical structure per se, the goal is to offer an initial investigation of non-conventional models of the metaphysical architecture of reality. Examples are provided with a view to illustrating that, and how, physics may avail itself of both ‘infinitist’ and ‘coherentist’ models—the former dropping the idea of a fundamental level, the latter abandoning the view that the world must have a hierarchical structure.

This article examines the gradual development of James Clerk Maxwell’s electromagnetic theory, arguing that he aimed at general structures through his models, illustrations, formal analogies, and scientific metaphors. It also considers a few texts in which Maxwell expounds his conception of physical theories and their relation to mathematics. Following a discussion of Maxwell’s extension of an analogy invented by William Thomson in 1842, the article analyzes Maxwell’s geometrical expression of Michael Faraday’s notion of lines of force. It then revisits Maxwell’s honeycomb model that he used to obtain his system of equations and the concomitant unification of electricity, magnetism, and optics. It also explores Maxwell’s view about the Lagrangian form of the fundamental equations of a physical theory. It shows that Maxwell was guided by general structural requirements that were inspired by partial and temporary models; these requirements were systematically detailed in Maxwell’s 1873 Treatise on electricity and magnetism.

During the 1880s the narrative of female players became distorted as professional players and boosters like John Montgomery Ward and Sporting Life editor, Francis C. Richter, sought to discredit and “disappear” them. Baseball’s popularity was reflected in myriad cultural forms (books, poems, games, songs, etc.) and many believed that the sport was protecting American “civilization” from fracturing as waves of new immigrants poured into the country. Newspapers joked about inept female players while illustrations and baseball cards sexualized them or lampooned their physical appearance. Nonetheless, girls and women kept playing on amateur/professional and scholastic/collegiate teams. Unscrupulous male entrepreneurs like Sylvester F. Wilson harmed the reputation of female professional players by fielding incompetent teams.

An idiolectal conception of language is compatible with a substantive role for external things — objects, including other people — in the characterization of idiolects. Illustrations of this role are not hard to come by. The point of looking outward from the individual is pretty evident for the case of reference to perceptually encountered objects: had the world been significantly different, a person with the same molecular history would have acquired, and called by the same familiar names, different physical and other concepts. An idiolectal conception of language is by no means committed, and has some reason to be opposed, to internalism, and to individualism in Burge's sense; that is, to the view that the organization of the body, abstracting from external things, is constitutive of any linguistically significant aspect of language.

Research on transnational families mostly assumes long physical distances and long periods of separation. However, transnational families are diverse and reconfigure in a multitude of ways. The US–Mexican border in Arizona is historically a fluid one, where contact between families is a potential. This possibility of physical contact on a semi-regular basis makes the current sample unique from other transnational families. Using exploratory and descriptive analysis, this chapter provides a portrait of family life for migrant families along the Arizona–Sonora border with the goal of illustrating the diversity of family life for transnational families. Study findings suggest multiple family configurations, including transborder families (with members living within 60 miles of the border on either side) who have frequent physical contact and transnational families with long physical separations and little physical contact. Various aspects of family life (e.g., parenting) between transborder and transnational families are also compared.

Crystals are sometimes called 'Flowers of the Mineral Kingdom'. In addition to their great beauty, crystals and other textured materials are enormously useful in electronics, optics, acoustics and many other engineering applications. This richly illustrated text describes the underlying principles of crystal physics and chemistry, covering a wide range of topics and illustrating numerous applications in many fields of engineering using the most important materials today. Tensors, matrices, symmetry and structure-property relationships form the main subjects of the book. While tensors and matrices provide the mathematical framework for understanding anisotropy, on which the physical and chemical properties of crystals and textured materials often depend, atomistic arguments are also needed to quantify the property coefficients in various directions. The atomistic arguments are partly based on symmetry and partly on the basic physics and chemistry of materials. After introducing the point groups appropriate for single crystals, textured materials and ordered magnetic structures, the directional properties of many different materials are described: linear and nonlinear elasticity, piezoelectricity and electrostriction, magnetic phenomena, diffusion and other transport properties, and both primary and secondary ferroic behavior. With crystal optics (its roots in classical mineralogy) having become an important component of the information age, nonlinear optics is described along with the piexo-optics, magneto-optics, and analogous linear and nonlinear acoustic wave phenomena. Enantiomorphism, optical activity, and chemical anisotropy are discussed in the final chapters of the book.

Scholars of esotericism often cite Ebenezer Sibly as a key figure in the transmission of early modern knowledge of the arcane to its “rediscovery” in the nineteenth century. Their explanation of his importance focuses on his “wondrous library” of scarce books and manuscripts. In fact, his library is mentioned in his will, but its omission from his probate inventory invites a reappraisal of the traditional account. What happened to the library? If it existed, what did it contain? This chapter reconstructs the contents of the library and draws some conclusions about how essential it was for Sibly’s reputation as a transmitter of early modern esotericism. The absence of a physical library also leads to a refashioning of Sibly’s role in the esoteric revival. He emerges not as a guardian of ancient books, but as the compiler of An Illustration, which, published affordably in numbers, helped build a broad readership for astrology.

This chapter begins the book’s illustration of the empirical research findings of the study. The chapter argues that women’s experience of imprisonment is embodied largely because, in being the object of punishment within prison, bodies become acutely aware of the particulars of prison space and time to the extent that they materially and physically sense and feel punishment. The chapter focuses particularly on how the prisoner becomes aware of her punishment and confinement through odours and sounds, through movement in different prison spaces, and through the subjective passage of time in custody. Using these examples, the chapter explores how prisoner bodies subjectively adjust to prison, making their prisoner experiences situationally specific and influences by the participants’ pre-prison biographies.

Light, distance and motion are prominent features in Heine’s ‘Am fernen Horizonten’. A city is veiled in dusk, the sun rises from the earth and the boatman rows with sad strokes. Using empirical findings on cross-modal and affective associations with sounds, we examine Schubert’s interpretation and illustration of these metaphorical dimensions in ‘Die Stadt’. Focusing on local variations in tempo and dynamics, we analyse how the emotional and cross-modal connotations of the song are modified in three performances, provindinginsight into the interrelationship between cross-modal and affective connotations of musical sound. Such interrelationships may suggest complex and often equivocal musical meanings. For example, emotional ‘distance’ is associated with physical distance, as modulated by loudness; visual brightness, as modulated by pitch and timbre, can be painful when unveiling a ‘dark’ memory. Thus, our analysis indicates how musical structures and contours may suggest and interact with perceptual and metaphorical shape in multiple dimensions.

Abstract:
Consultation-liaison Psychiatry is the newest sub-specialty in psychiatry. It focuses on the psychological/psychiatric care of medical, surgical, obstetrical, and gynecological patients and presents many distinctive ethical dilemmas. These dilemmas often involve judgments of capacity and justified paternalism, manifest versus latent content, surrogate decision making, confidentiality, truth telling, dual agency, refusing treatment, decisions to end life, surrogate decision-making, and the complexity of interdisciplinary moral relationships. This interface between psychiatry, medicine, and ethics highlights the need for bioethical teaching within medical school, residency, and fellowship education. Ethical reasoning needs to be in the repertoire of the contemporary physician especially now, given the rapidly expanding choices that must be made in today’s medicine. This chapter provides examples of ethical dilemmas that arise in Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry and illustrations of the ethical analysis that can be used to resolve them.

In the field of mental disorders the boundaries between mental normality and disease are often blurred. Psychiatrists, being aware of the instrumental nature of psychiatric diagnoses, try to deal with these blurred boundaries by stipulating strict definitions of clinical categories, by operationalizing diagnoses, and by using evidence-based methods of production and algorithmic application of medical knowledge. However, the clinical uncertainties can only partially be reduced by these means, because the physician always has to consider the individuality of the patient as well as to find a helpful solution to the dilemma of not treating a treatable but only probable or even only possible disease condition versus treating a variation of normal behavior against the risk of obtaining unwanted side effects of drug therapy or stigmatization. As is shown in the chapter, subthreshold mental disorders provide illuminating illustrations of these limits of medical standardization.

We describe the main features of the coarse-grained models that are typically useful in modelling soft interfaces, from force fields to the continuum descriptions involving density fields. We explain the theoretical basis of the main numerical methods that are used to explore the phase space associated with these models. Finally, three recent examples, illustrating the spirit in which relatively simple simulations can contribute to solving pending problems in soft matter physics, are briefly described. Clearly, a short series of lectures can offer, at best, a biased and restricted view of the available approaches. Our aim here will be to provide the reader with such an overview, with a focus on methods and descriptions that ‘bridge the scale’ between the molecular scale and the continuum or quasi-continuum one. The objective to present a guide to the relevant literature—which has now to a large extent appeared in the form of textbooks.

In 508/7 B.C.E., after years of stasis and uncertainty, the city of Athens was rocked by a momentous occurrence: the passage of a series of reforms that resulted in the creation of what has come to be known as the world’s first democracy. Exactly how the Athenians did this is still a fundamental question 2,500 years later. This book provides a novel answer to these questions by considering the built environment broadly and monumental architecture specifically. The reforms transformed the very nature of what it meant to be Athenian and their far-reaching effects would come to leave their mark on nearly every aspect of society, including the structures at which they prayed and in which they debated legislation. This book investigates the built environment of ancient Athens precisely during this time, the Late Archaic period (ca. 514/13–480/79 B.C.E.). It was in these decades, filled with transition and disorder, that the Athenians transformed their political system from a tyranny to a democracy. Amidst concurrent sociopolitical changes, they altered the physical landscape and undertook the monumental articulation of the city and countryside. Interpreting the nature of the fledgling democracy from a material standpoint, this book approaches the questions and problems of the early political system through the lens of buildings. It draws attention to a pivotal period in Athenian political history through the built environment, thereby exposing the richness of the material record and illustrating how it participated in the creation of a new demotic Athenian identity.

According to the argument from inductive risk, scientists have responsibilities to consider the consequences of error when they set evidential standards for making decisions such as accepting or rejecting hypotheses. This argument has received a great deal of scholarly attention in recent years. Exploring Inductive Risk brings together a set of concrete case studies with the goals of illustrating the pervasiveness of inductive risk, assisting scientists and policymakers in responding to it, and moving theoretical discussions of this phenomenon forward. The book contains eleven case studies ranging over a wide range of scientific contexts and fields: the drug approval process, high energy particle physics, dual-use research, climate science, research on gender disparities, clinical trials, and toxicology. The chapters are divided into four parts: (1) weighing inductive risk; (2) evading inductive risk; (3) the breadth of inductive risk; and (4) exploring the limits of inductive risk. It includes an introduction that provides a historical overview of the argument from inductive risk and a conclusion that highlights three major topic areas that merit future research. These include the nature of inductive risk and the argument from inductive risk (AIR), the extent to which the AIR can be evaded by defenders of the value-free ideal, and the strategies that the scientific community can employ to handle inductive risk in a responsible fashion.
