Abstract:
The waste collected daily from household and businesses entities can be utilized for various objectives, serving as raw material for business and other most appropriate purposes. You can, for example, recycle plastic, produce compost and energy, recovering the economic value of such waste. Waste recycling generates jobs and income, reduces the amount of natural resources needed for a new product and also decreases the need to occupy (and pollute) space to deposit materials that have served only once their socio-economic function. And what you can't recycle always has another proper disposal, as a principle which is basic in the concept of sustainable development: Do not transfer the solution of the problem for future generations. The aim of this study is to evaluate the panorama of the selective collection of household waste from the case study of plastic recycling in the neighborhood of Hulene Dump side, at municipality of Maputo. The methodology used in this research was the bibliographical and documentary analysis, as well as semi-structured qualitative interviews with: representative of Municipal Department of Waste Management, Health and Water Supply in the Maputo municipality; administrative coordinators of four organizations studied (RECICLA and FERTILIZA cooperatives, AMOR and PAGALATA associations). Additionally, technical visits were carried out with written and photographic records, interviews to members of the RECICLA cooperative.

Abstract:
Intellectual property is increasingly recognized as key contributor to business success. Meanwhile, in Vietnam, there exists a lack of evidence on how firms are managing their intellectual property strategically. With that being said, this paper aims to provide a systematic analysis of successful intellectual property management practices of Vietnamese small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The authors redesign Intellectual Creation Cycle by Japan Patent Office, taking into account the unique management scenario among Vietnamese businesses. Then, we demonstrate patent and trademark management of six representative SMEs each in four steps: Creation, Registration, Utilisation and Protection. Data collection is based on in-depth interviews with directors of the selected companies. One of the most important findings is that it highlights collaboration between universities/public research institutions and businesses in an effort to develop high value-added products. Also, from the policy-making perspective, a number of lessons have also been drawn out: first, universities and public research institutions should be promoted to commercialise their research outputs; second, enhancement of finance scheme by the industry plays an important role in the IP commercialisation process. This paper thus provides strategic guidelines for Vietnamese SMEs in corporate IP management. It also proposes some practical insights for policy makers with respect to the promotion of IP among businesses, in particular SMEs for the purpose of economic growth.

Abstract:
The purpose of the current was to conduct a descriptive content analysis of the national research studies on classroom management. In this study, the thematic and methodological aspects of the studies on classroom management were portrayed in-depth through an inductive approach. In this systematic review, printed and electronically published studies on classroom management between 1999-2019 were considered. Tags and templates were used as data collection tools. In the study, the content analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in order to examine the studies conducted in the field of classroom management between 1999-2019. This systematic review was conducted through the content analysis of a total of 300 studies researching the concepts of classroom management. A combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches was used in the data anaysis. The thematic-factual-conceptual contents of the studies were carried out by keyword analysis. A total of 4 study phenomena were identified and these are as follows: (i) classroom management approaches (ii) classroom management dimensions (iii) in-school factors in classroom management, (iv) out-of-school factors in classroom management. The reviewed studies mostly tended to use the qualitative model as a research method. The general designing approach emerges as a reaearch design type. Many studies included in the study obtained data from primary sources if a data collection process was carried out. Most of the sources of data were teachers and students. In this study, it is suggested to increase the richness of the techniques in data collection tools and analysis by increasing the diversity in the research methods of the articles on classroom management classroom.

Abstract:
Van Gogh Museum (VGM) wants to reach out to as many visitors and non-visitors as possible, enriching and inspiring people through their collection and knowledge on the famous painter, Vincent van Gogh. One of their strategies is through digital marketing approaches. However, VGM decides to reinstate its photography ban at roughly the same time the ‘selfie’ trend is booming all over the world, which might hinder the museum’s mission. This case study explores issues in a museum business that slightly differ, yet still holds high relevance to any regular business in terms of digital communication strategy. The aims of this case study are to exercise a decision-making process in which the visitors and the non-visitors of the VGM play a major role, and to initiate creativity in discovering ways to communicate and creating relationship with the public or targeted audience.

Abstract:
Fashion, eroticism and pornography, especially in recent years, have created different synergies that not only embrace the design of fashion products and collections, but have defined and define precise visual, photographic and cinematographic languages as well as communication strategies that have not only borrowed the language and aesthetics of pornography, but also communication models, tools and channels. Today, we have thus witnessed an increasing hybridization of languages and channels that have generated forms of communication (performative, editorial, cinematographic or digital). It is not easy to identify the limits between fashion and pornography and between private and public spheres. Through literature review and several case studies, the article aims to investigate the evolution of the relationship between fashion, pornography and mass communication from an aesthetic, performative and, last but not least, technological point of view.

Abstract:
This study aims to determine the role of local Sasi institutions in forest management activities, which can be used in formulating forms of forest management based on regional characteristics in realizing sustainable forest management and improving community welfare. Data collection is done by observing all community activities both in the forest and in residential areas. Interviews are conducted with all stakeholders to obtain systematic and intensive data and information including village government, managers (kewang), youth and student leaders, academics, NGOs and documentation studies in the form of library studies and photographs relating to research. The results of the study show that sasi is a form of temporary prohibition on the community to refrain from exploiting natural resources that are on land that are privately owned (non-communal) or collectively (communal rights) and at sea owned by the management agency (Kewang). Sasi law for teresterial land (forest) has management stages, namely planning, implementation, supervision, yield management, and marketing. Government policies in the forestry sector such as the forestry law number 41 of 1999 year concerning forestry, and the decision of the minister of forestry number 31 of 2001 year concerning social law are seen to be in line with the sasi law. In its development, sasi as a model of local wisdom in Moluccas Province faced obstacles in its implementation, both those who came from outside and inside the community, such as the proportion of forest area with the number of members of the community, conflicts between customary law and national law, and government policies in the form of HPH which is a threat to the territory of the country.

Abstract:
Abstract Wildfire poses a serious risk in several regions of the world threatening urban, agricultural areas and natural ecosystems as well. Nature conservation has important role to be prepared for the management of postfire environmental degradation and restoration for protected areas preserving valuable ecosystems. The improving temporal and spatial resolution of remote sensing and GIS methods significantly contributes to map the changes for accelerating management steps of restoration. In this study a severe wildfire and its impacts were assessed in case of a protected area of the Kiskunság National Park in Hungary, which was partly burnt down in 2012. The aim of this research was to efficiently and accurately assess the damages and to plan and execute the restoration works using remote sensing tools. Aerial data collection was performed one month, and one year after the fire. In 2014 the regenerated vegetation was surveyed and mapped in the field. Using the aerial photographs and the field data, the degree and extent of the fire damages, the types and the state of the vegetation and the presence and proportion of the invasive species were determined. Semi-automatic methods were used for the classification of completely, partially damaged and undamaged areas. Based on the results, the reforestation of the burnt area is suggested to prevent the overspreading of white poplar against common junipers and to clean the area from the most frequent invasive species. To monitor the regeneration of the vegetation and the spreading of the invasive species, further aerial photography and field campaigns are planned.

Drawing on the organizational theories of noted business thinker and management consultant Peter Drucker, the editors of this volume have gathered together case studies and interviews that illustrate his concept of planned abandonment at work in libraries. Defined as the systematic evaluation of products and services, planned abandonment in libraries means examining reference, instruction, and collection development and abandoning those services that are no longer relevant in the present context. The editors argue that this strategy is the hallmark of innovative organizations and the key to libraries' future longevity.

Abstract:
Assisted reproductive technologies can aid conservation efforts via support of ex situ population management and preservation of genetic material. Data from 38 sperm collection attempts from 17 polar bears (1–5 procedures/bear) were evaluated. Sample collections were attempted via electroejaculation (EEJ; n = 6), urethral catheterization (UC; n = 25), or sperm rescue (SR; n = 7) during the breeding season (Jan. 1-May 21; n = 27) and nonbreeding season (May 22-Dec. 31; n = 11). Sperm retrieval was successful in 1 EEJ (16.7%), 18 UC (72.0%) and 4 SR (57.1%) collections. Initial sperm motility and viability were 50.0% and 77.0% for EEJ, 64.3 ± 7.4% and 80.9 ± 3.8% for UC, and 56.7 ± 8.8% and 80.5 ± 0.5% for SR. UC and SR were more likely to be successful during the breeding season (84.2–100%) than the nonbreeding season (25.0–33.3%). Testicular tumors were observed in four males (57%) during SR. In total, 13 samples were cryopreserved (n = 1 EEJ, 9 UC, and 3 SR) with egg-yolk-based equine extender (EQ) or OptiXcell (OP). For both extenders, post-thaw motility and viability were reduced by 20–60% and 30–65%, respectively. Further efforts to optimize procedures are warranted, but this summary provides data useful for enhancing the success of polar bear sperm collection and cryopreservation.

Abstract:
Research methodology is an important and indispensable element in research design. However, designing research strategy such as case study has proven to be a difficult task among research students. Case study is one of the most frequently used qualitative research methodology in the field of construction management; however the design and implementation of case study remains a complex and contentious issue among researchers. Consequently, many students select case study strategy without understanding the array of factors that can affect the outcome of their research. This paper presents a practical, experience-based, step-by-step guide to select, conduct and complete a case study research in construction management. The paper justifies the rationale for adopting case study, explored the various stages in designing case study spanning from the theoretical framework, constructing research themes, data collection and analysis through to validity and reliability issues. This paper contributes in expanding the knowledge of upcoming researchers in the built environment on the design, applications, advantages, disadvantages as well as limitations of case study in construction management researches. The study recommends the research design for students undertaking construction management related studies.

Abstract:
34 Background: Research and quality improvement studies often involve an extensive amount of manual review of medical records. The effective management of this process is critical to the consistent, accurate, and cost effective collection and timely dissemination of quality data. Methods: The purpose of this paper is to introduce “OpenQA”, a data management tool designed specifically to help organize, track, and communicate data related to quality improvement studies. OpenQA is designed with ease of chart abstraction, efficiency of data collection, and data transparency as a goal, while providing reporting that support a range of activities related to data management tasks common to hospital quality management departments. The basic method behind OpenQA is to: (1) Provide a centralized online repository for measure related metadata; (2) automatically identify retrospective and prospective encounters that meet specified study inclusion/exclusion criteria; (3) extract key details from structured and unstructured data sources and then combine them to help quality auditors make compliance decisions; (4) provide a workflow engine that supports work lists, alerting and a feedback mechanism for metric stakeholders; (5) provide audit tracking to enable measurability of data collection efforts. Results: Favorable effects were realized post implementation across all measures of performance despite an increase in case volume. Results indicate a decrease in median audit turnaround time, defined as the time between the patient encounter and a decision is made by the auditor, by 23 days (85%). Results also indicate a decrease in the audit reporting turnaround time, defined as the time between the patient encounter and the compliance decision is made and reported. Both reductions were significant at a p value of < 0.05. Conclusions: We suggest that a tool designed to help streamline and standardize the quality improvement data collection process may offer the advantage of minimizing the resource utilization associated with data collection while improving data integrity and shortening the feedback loop.

Abstract:
The transition to circular economy models is a big challenge for enterprises, since it forces them not only to change established supply chains, pay extra attention to the quality and durability of manufactured products, develop schemes for the collection and subsequent disposal of products that have worked out their life, but also actively develop eco-innovation activities and participate in R&D more actively. The aim of this work is to study examples of the implementation of circular business models from the leading EU-based companies. The focus of the research on European companies is due to the fact that the European Union has been implementing a plan for the transition to a circular economy since 2015. In order to track the nature of applied eco-innovation in the field of CE the case-studies from the leading EU-based companies have been analysed. The choice of the companies is determined by their commitment to the CE principles and availability of the obtained results in their annual reports. The case-studies have shown all reviewed companies demonstrated beyond average commitment to the principles of CE in all aspects (sayings, doings and materiality). Their strong adherence is determined by their intense environmental impact and leading positions at regional and global markets.

Abstract:
This study aims to assess the methodological rigor of case studies in management accounting published in Brazilian journals. The study is descriptive. The data were collected using documentary research and content analysis, and 180 papers published from 2008 to 2012 in accounting journals rated as A2, B1, and B2 that were classified as case studies were selected. Based on the literature, we established a set of 15 criteria that we expected to be identified (either explicitly or implicitly) in the case studies to classify those case studies as appropriate from the standpoint of methodological rigor. These criteria were partially met by the papers analyzed. The aspects less aligned with those proposed in the literature were the following: little emphasis on justifying the need to understand phenomena in context; lack of explanation of the reason for choosing the case study strategy; the predominant use of questions that do not enable deeper analysis; many studies based on only one source of evidence; little use of data and information triangulation; little emphasis on the data collection method; a high number of cases in which confusion between case study as a research strategy and as data collection method were detected; a low number of papers reporting the method of data analysis; few reports on a study's contributions; and a minority highlighting the issues requiring further research. In conclusion, the method used to apply case studies to management accounting must be improved because few studies showed rigorous application of the procedures that this strategy requires.

Abstract:
Unforeseen ground conditions are some of the main contributors to construction cost over-runs and late completion. Recent research trends have witnessed the scopes of building information modeling (BIM) technology being extended to subsoil and substructure constructions, or simply known as geotechnical BIM. This paper aimed to explore the procedures of developing 3D subsoil models through two case studies in Malaysia. The geotechnical BIM processes were performed by commercial software, AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017, with the extension of the Geotechnical Module. The modeling procedures can be divided into three main stages, namely data collection, data interpretation, and data visualization. The subsoil models were successfully developed at different levels of detailing to serve for different applications. The results showed that the 3D subsoil modeling required huge modeling and computational efforts, particularly when dealing with tropical residual soil profiles in Malaysia that are highly intricate. Thus, an adequate soil strata generalization was required to simplify the generated subsoil model. Data collection and management was identified as one of the main challenges of promoting geotechnical BIM in Malaysia at a macro-scale. Despite the challenges, successful implementation of the geotechnical building information in the present case studies were proved to be capable of promoting interoperability of soil data, which is an essential element in sustainable construction.

Based on the findings, it would seem that the hotels studied cover most of the SDGs, as they are seen contributing in the three main spheres of sustainability, namely, the economy, society and the environment. Originality/value The five hotels profiled are engaged in responsible action that is sustainable and reduces the ecological impact. These actions have a positive impact on guests, staff and hoteliers. The findings may serve as guidance to hotels which have not yet committed to implementing the SDG goals.

Abstract:
This article recognises the paucity of scholarly work on environmental governance in Latin America. More specifically, it is hypothesised that community-based forest management in Mexico serves as an ideal case of ecologically beneficial and democratic decision-making, or ecological democracy. After introducing some of the relevant literature, this hypothesis is tested through a comparison of two indigenous forest-based communities in Oaxaca's Sierra Norte. Four key themes primarily emerged from semi-structured interviews, participant observation and other data collection techniques: local governance, equitable decision-making, forest management and environmental awareness. In comparing these two Mexican communities, this article aims to extend ideas of ecological democracy by linking empirical findings to political ecology theory and community forestry literature. While it is true that ecological democracy in Mexico has been facilitated under certain socio-cultural conditions, it is concluded that it can be simultaneously hindered. The empirical findings provide an analytical framework for subsequent research on ecological democracy in Latin America.

Abstract:
Hospital wastes are highly infectious and can pose serious threat to human health. As the rate at which these wastes are generated is getting rapidly higher because of rapid urbanization and population growth, also the problem of disposal of these wastes is becoming more serious. It is of utmost importance that these wastes receive specialized treatment and management prior to their final disposal. Some of these wastes are mixed with household wastes, and the entire pile becomes a great public health hazard. Scavengers search through the piles for salable items, which they wash, repack and resell to the public, endangering their lives, and that of the entire public. Until recently, the management of medical wastes has received little attention despite their potential environmental hazards and public health risks. The collection, storage and disposal of medical wastes in Lagos are of growing environmental problem which needs immediate attention. This study was carried out to assess the current waste management practices in terms of type of wastes and quantities of waste generated in the healthcare facilities and the waste handling and disposal practices; also, to assess the level of awareness of health workers regarding hospital and clinical waste management. Two health care facilities in Lagos state were used as case studies. These hospitals are secondary facilities providing emergency, surgical, material and child health services. The methodology design was mainly of qualitative and involved physical observation, questionnaire administration, quantitative data collection procedures and manipulation, data analysis and interpretation. The findings showed that there was almost no knowledge of hospital waste management policy in the two health care facilities among the management staff, which seemed to confirm the premium on hospital wastes and their poor management.

Abstract:
Idea management process speeds up the innovation process by providing a systematic and manageable way of generating ideas vital to continues improvement and development within an organisation. There are many web-based tools that can support organisations with their idea management process. Based on the reviewed literature, currently there is no general model in literature that would support organisations in their idea management process based on the context. In this paper, authors describe the different idea management models based on the canvas model to account for the multidimensional context of web-based idea management systems. In prior research, authors have explored and identified the different idea management systems application types based on the different idea management systems classification types developed from the traditional business model canvas model. In this research, authors answer the following questions: What classifications based on the business model canvas could be created for idea management systems application, and how do these types manifest in real life? It is question that is identified a differences in the results, but form practical perspective understanding of different types could help for enterprises to choose the most appropriate one, but for IMS developers to enrich the types of IMS they are creating. In the literature there is only few attempt to classify IMS. Authors use the following research methods: a literature review (data collection: systematic data collection from scientific databases; data analysis: content analysis). Case study comprising data from over 100 enterprises with web-based idea management systems experience (data collection: case studies; data analysis: content analysis). To verify results 10 expert interviews were conducted. As a result, this research unlocks new value for idea management systems users and developers, as it shows the different idea management systems application types based on a specific business model canvas aspect. This resulted in the creation of 9 idea management systems classifications.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose an e-business assessment framework for organizations that aim to enhance the effectiveness of their online presence and maximize the benefits that result from it. The framework is based on three main pillars derived from the academic literature research: e-marketing strategies, customer relationship management (CRM) strategies and business model strategies. Design/methodology/approach This paper reviews the literature from e-Marketing, CRM and business model strategies, leading to the generation of an e-Business assessment framework. Second, it takes 19 case studies and analyzes them using ATLAS.ti, through qualitative content analysis, to validate that framework. Findings Pragmatic advice for practitioners derives from research results considering that this framework enables managers to characterize the company in terms of its e-business approach, making it possible to determine the level of depth of competitive online strategies. Lessons for an improved e-business approach can be derived from this paper. Originality/value This study proposes a novel e-business framework to assist organizations that want to have an online presence. This framework is comprised of the factors identified in the literature review that contribute to define and scope that online presence. The framework is then validated through the collection of 19 case studies of companies that have this online presence, validating the theoretical findings.

Abstract:
Context Researchers and managers often use DNA analysis and remote photography to identify cryptic animals and estimate abundance. Remote video cameras are used less often but offer an increased ability to distinguish similar-looking individuals as well as to observe behavioural patterns that cannot be adequately captured with still photography. However, the use of this approach in species with minimally distinguishing marks has not been tested. Aims To determine the utility and accuracy of distinguishing characteristics of American black bears, Ursus americanus, observed on remote video for identifying individuals in an open population. Methods We compared individuals identified on video with individuals and their sex identified by DNA analysis of hairs collected from hair traps visited by the bears. Key results We found that remote video could be used to determine the number of male and female black bears sampled by the video cameras. Specifically, we matched 13 individual bear genotypes with 13 video identifications, one genotype for each individual. We correctly matched ~82% of video identifications with all 38 genotypes collected from hair traps. Conclusions We demonstrated that distinguishing characteristics of a cryptic animal in remote video can be used to accurately identify individuals. Remote video complements genetic analysis by providing information about habitat use and behaviour. Implications When remote video cameras can be used to identify individuals, a wealth of other information will subsequently be obtained. Multi-year video-based studies can show sex ratios, and relative physical condition; shed light on fine-scale habitat use, such as when and where animals feed and what they eat; and display social interactions and rare behaviours.

Purpose The paper will present the case study of preventive and planned conservation applied to the Royal Villa and Park of Monza, which is one of the pilot projects within the general framework of Monza and Brianza Cultural District. Starting from an in-depth analysis of the Royal Villa, which represents a recent conservation and valorisation intervention developed by both public and private subjects, the purpose of this paper is to define an operative model for the management of complex properties, at communicating good practices for the maintenance of the built heritage and at identifying the priorities for the interventions. Design/methodology/approach The research project foresaw a first collection of data and information related to the previous conservation activities executed upon the case study, the design of a conservation plan in all its parts (technical handbook, conservation programme, economic budget, user handbook) through an information system dedicated to the conservation of built cultural heritage, and its fulfilment. In the meantime, a context analysis of the Royal Villa and Park of Monza was developed, with a specific attention to the diversified historical buildings located in the park. Findings The action research carried out has been evaluated in the framework of upstream perspective theories. This enabled to highlight the importance of an integrated approach; of the need of sharing the collection of data in order to set up evidence-based policies; and of the need to enhance the skills of involved professionals and decision makers. Originality/value A progress in protection measures, the understanding of conservation and valorisation as preventive activities, effectiveness of private business models for maintenance, dissemination of good practices, and creation of a network of local stakeholders.

Abstract:
This article studies photographic practices in ‘voluntourism’ alongside the rise of social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. The advent and widespread use of social media platforms today complicates the ethics of photographic practices, as the ease of sharing photographs accentuates and stirs up the unequal relations between the photographer and the photographed. From a conceptual standpoint, the moral and altruistic underpinnings of volunteer work supposedly differentiate voluntourists from their counterparts in mainstream tourism, who are often assumed to be engaged in commoditized and leisure-based activities. However, existing research suggests that voluntourists do participate in conventionally touristic practices, as the pervasiveness of photography illustrates. Using interviews with 16 voluntourists, this article examines the negotiations behind photo-taking and photo-posting in voluntourism. We also consider the case of Barbie Savior, a satirical Instagram account featuring ‘the doll that saved Africa’. The emergence of such online media articles that critique and make fun of voluntourists’ depiction of their Third World experience therefore becomes a self-governing mechanism for how one should behave in encountering the Third World, even as voluntourism itself continues to be seen as a viable way of caring for the Third World.

Abstract:
Many authors argue that the case study is a valid and advantageous research method for certain studies, having been used as a method of academic research in the field of social sciences as well as in management. This research method is an integrated system and offers the opportunity for a holistic view that combines data collection methods such as archival searches, interviews, questionnaires and observation. The data collection needed to build a case study is labour-intensive, can last months or even years, and data overload seems almost inevitable. The case study is an empirical inquiry that investigates a contemporary phenomenon within a real-life context. In this research method, qualitative data usually predominates, but quantitative data often appears in case studies. Some research studies consider the case study to be a research method for validating and constructing theory. Other research highlights that all social science studies must start with a theory based on a review of the literature relating to the subject under investigation and this theory must then be validated through the study of a specific object, phenomenon or social problem. The key point is that before a theory can be validated, it must be constructed. In other words, a theory or theoretical framework first emerges not through a deductive process but through the inductive approach of studying an empirical case or object, and finally all theories are initially based on a case or object. This type of research has traditionally been considered soft, due to the inexistence of criteria that allow to evaluate its validity as a method to study a phenomenon in its real context. The present work is part of this theme and intends to contribute to diminish the perception about the lack of rigour associated with the case study. The present research focuses on the analysis of the methodological rigour of defended master's dissertations. In this context an investigation was undertaken of master's dissertations in the management area of a higher education management institution that use the case study as the research method. In order to achieve our goals, four hundred and forty-two master's dissertations defended in management scientific master's degrees in a Portuguese higher education institution which specializes in the area of economic and business sciences were analysed. The results of the qualitative research indicate that 40.0% of the dissertations focus on case studies. The results obtained lead us to conclude that in general the dissertations analysed present a high level of methodological rigour with respect to the object of study and a moderate level with respect to data analysis and results. The most critical aspects are the way data are collected, namely the use of multiple sources of evidence in less than half of the cases, which makes triangulation of data impossible.

The objective of this study was to demonstrate the environmental impacts of solid residues of Pelotas City-Brazil through photography. The research is characterized as a case study and its basis was the environmental perception through the dispositive of the look of the researchers on the environmental impact of the solid residues on the so called Fragata, Central and Porto regionals of the city. The analysis of the photographic images showed that the improper discharge of solid residues leads to environmental impacts in Pelotas and therefore causes social, environmental, economic and administrative issues. The management of the solid residues is inefficient and needs to be improved. The population must perform proper segregation, conditioning and discharging of the housing residues. The selective collection and recycling must be prioritized for the proper management of the solid residues of the city to occur. Educative environmental programs covering the different levels of the society are a necessity. Additionally, such programs are important for the proper sustainable development of the city and also to improve the quality of life of the population.

Purpose The case study approach has been widely used in management studies and the social sciences more generally. However, there are still doubts about when and how case studies should be used. This paper aims to discuss this approach, its various uses and applications, in light of epistemological principles, as well as the criteria for rigor and validity. Design/methodology/approach This paper discusses the various concepts of case and case studies in the methods literature and addresses the different uses of cases in relation to epistemological principles and criteria for rigor and validity. Findings The use of this research approach can be based on several epistemologies, provided the researcher attends to the internal coherence between method and epistemology, or what the authors call “alignment.” Originality/value This study offers a number of implications for the practice of management research, as it shows how the case study approach does not commit the researcher to particular data collection or interpretation methods. Furthermore, the use of cases can be justified according to multiple epistemological orientations.

Abstract:
The number of smart phones that are supported by location facility like Global Positioning System (GPS), Camera and connected to the internet has increased sharply in UAE during the last five years. This increase offers a chance to capitalize on using these devices as resources for data collection, therefore reducing cost. In many cases specific events may happen in areas or at time where there may be no governmental departments to collect such unrepeated events. The current research will showcase various studies that had been conducted on Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) debating various aspects such as accuracy, legal issues, and privacy. This research will also integrate Geographic Information System (GIS), VGI, social media tools, data mining, and mobile technology to design a conceptual framework for promoting public participation in UAE. The data gathered through survey will be helpful in correlating various aspects of VGI. Since there are diverse views about these aspects, policy makers are left undecided in many countries about how to deal with VGI. The assessment of the UAE case will contribute to the age-long debate by examining the willingness of the public to participate. The result will show the public perception to be as sensors for data collection. Additionally, the potential of citizen involvement in the risk and disaster management process by providing voluntary data collected for VGI applications will also be explored in the paper.

The rapidly changing time has brought changes, including education, to every aspect of life. Education must constantly make changes to improve the quality of education as one of the formal educational institutions for the community. In this study the types of case studies are qualitative. Interviews and literary studies, field observations, and documentation were used for data collection techniques in this study. In this study, the analysis coincided with data collection on the ground. The investigator reduces data obtained in the field by analyzing the data, sorting each information by the focus of research and drawing conclusions in each direction. This study shows that improvements in the quality of education must be based on alternative management of schools. This promotes the development of the concept of quality management based on schools. This alternative management allows schools to be independent and regulated to improve the quality of education but still refers to national policies.

Abstract:
In operations management field, researches that adopt the case study method are often criticized for lack of rigor. That is worrisome, considering the popularity of this method. Achieving rigor requires some actions from the researcher and one of them is the adoption of a robust research protocol. However, information about the case study protocol is fragmented in literature; in fact, many studies address the method, but those dealing specifically with protocol are scarce. Aiming to assist other researchers, in this study is proposed a case study protocol for qualitative researches in operations management that can be applied in any type of case study, especially in those that study organizations and their internal processes and adopt the interview as the main source of information. The proposal is the result of a protocol tested in the field and an extensive literature review covering different areas of knowledge (focusing on the most classic and important papers on the subject). The protocol was replicated eighteen times in a study about an important organization and evaluated by six researchers in different phases. It comprises a set of recommendations and should be used as a reference guide on how to proceed in data collection step. If planned and used with care, the protocol will guide the researcher, favoring the rigor and quality of the results, eliminating doubts and uncertainties and reducing reworks.

Abstract:
Background Recent advances in mobile technologies for sensing human biosignals are empowering researchers to collect real-world data outside of the laboratory, in natural settings where participants can perform their daily activities with minimal disruption. These new sensing opportunities usher a host of challenges and constraints for both researchers and participants. Objective This viewpoint paper aims to provide a comprehensive guide to aid research teams in the selection and management of sensors before beginning and while conducting human behavior studies in the wild. The guide aims to help researchers achieve satisfactory participant compliance and minimize the number of unexpected procedural outcomes. Methods This paper presents a collection of challenges, consideration criteria, and potential solutions for enabling researchers to select and manage appropriate sensors for their research studies. It explains a general data collection framework suitable for use with modern consumer sensors, enabling researchers to address many of the described challenges. In addition, it provides a description of the criteria affecting sensor selection, management, and integration that researchers should consider before beginning human behavior studies involving sensors. On the basis of a survey conducted in mid-2018, this paper further illustrates an organized snapshot of consumer-grade human sensing technologies that can be used for human behavior research in natural settings. Results The research team applied the collection of methods and criteria to a case study aimed at predicting the well-being of nurses and other staff in a hospital. Average daily compliance for sensor usage measured by the presence of data exceeding half the total possible hours each day was about 65%, yielding over 355,000 hours of usable sensor data across 212 participants. A total of 6 notable unexpected events occurred during the data collection period, all of which had minimal impact on the research project. Conclusions The satisfactory compliance rates and minimal impact of unexpected events during the case study suggest that the challenges, criteria, methods, and mitigation strategies presented as a guide for researchers are helpful for sensor selection and management in longitudinal human behavior studies in the wild.

Abstract:
Due to the increasing need for a more sustainable environment, the study of waste management strategies is increasing worldwide. Pneumatic urban waste collection is an alternative to conventional truck collection, especially in urban areas where there is a need for reducing traffic and pollution. In this study, the scientific literature on such automated waste collection systems (AWCSs) (also known as automated vacuum waste collection (AVWC) systems) is evaluated through a bibliometric analysis. The available scientific literature is found to be scarce, while there are several patents on the topic. The keywords used in the literature are mainly related to energy use, gas emissions, and the cost–benefit analysis. Moreover, the market status is presented and a summary of the environmental studies is provided. The active companies in the field are identified and a complete list of AWCSs is provided. Most of the scientific literature related to the environmental aspects of AWCSs uses the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology to evaluate the performance of different case studies.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate how luxury Italian fashion companies manage the replenishment process, and how they leverage supply chain (SC) to be able to match supply and demand of fashion products. Design/methodology/approach – Literature review was the first step performed; then, a case study research has been conducted in order to have a comprehensive view of the real context of luxury Italian fashion companies concerning merchandise planning and replenishment processes. After the sample was individuated, a questionnaire has guided the interviews and then data have been collected. Analysing data has concerned a primary case analysis and then cross-case patterns have been searched. Finally, several variables coherent to the aim of the study have been pinpointed and a framework has been designed. Findings – The paper provides a characterization of the luxury Italian fashion industry concerning merchandise planning constraints and the replenishment processes. To guarantee the flexibility required to match supply and demand when there is a high percentage of seasonal products in the collection, companies leverage on both downstream and upstream SC alignment. Originality/value – The enhancement of performance within the fashion SC is a topic not too much examined in depth, in particular referring to the luxury fashion companies and to the Italian context. Aligning upstream and downstream activities, information sharing between vendor and retailer and securing strategic alliances with the suppliers constitute important steps to reach flexibility and reactivity and to be in step with the market needs. The paper provides valuable insights to companies that are trying to decrease their lost sales and to increase their sell-out and customer service through a review of their SC processes.

Abstract:
Climate warming has become indisputable, and it is now crucial to increase our understanding of both the mechanisms and consequences of climate change. The Antarctic region is subjected to substantial changes, the trends of which have been recognized for several decades. In the South Shetland Islands, the most visible effect of climate change is progressive deglaciation. The following review focuses on past glaciological studies conducted on King George Island (KGI). The results of collected cryosphere element observations are discussed herein in a comprehensive manner. Our analysis showed that there is a lack of temporal as well as spatial continuity for studies on the basic mass balance parameters on the entire KGI ice dome and only Bellingshausen Dome has a relatively long history of data collection. The methodologies of past work, which have improved over time, are also discussed. When studying the glacier front fluctuations, the authors most frequently use a 1956 aerial photography as reference ice coverage. This was the case for seven papers, while other sources are seldomly mentioned. In other papers as many as 41 other sources were used, and therefore comparison to photos taken up to 60 years later can give misleading trends, as small glaciers may have both advanced and retreated in that time. In the case of glacial velocities there is also an apparent lack of consistency, as different glaciers were indicated as the fastest on KGI. Only Lange, Anna, Crystal, Eldred, and eastern part of Usher glaciers were determined by more than one author as the fastest. Additionally, there are gaps in the KGI Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey area, which includes three ice domes: the Warszawa Icefield, the Krakow Icefield, and eastern part of King George Island. Ideas for further work on the topic are also suggested, allowing for easier access to data and thus contributing to a better understanding of glacier development mechanisms.

Abstract:
Risk management is very vital in the construction industry as the industry is full of uncertainties. Every organization follows a risk management process in their projects especially if a project is complex and has a lot of technicalities, but the method of practice may differ in every organization and how importantly used in projects. The COVID-19 lockdown has created serious impacts on the supply chains of the industry. Hence, the study aimed to establish the importance of risk management in the procurement systems by assessing the impacts due to the pandemic lockdown. The data collection was limited in accessing the industry due to the guidelines issued by the government. The study used secondary data collection through a literature survey and a questionnaire survey. The identified risks were qualitatively analyzed using descriptive scales of likely hood and impact. This study has established the importance of risk management in procurement systems and the importance of risk management during natural disasters and other uncertain times. At times when everything comes to a halt and no movement is allowed, it’s important to be prepared to save a business from downfall, in case of situations like COVID19 and to mitigate project-specific risks

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to introduce and demonstrate a new model for service quality that separates out the measurement of service quality in ways grounded in psychological theory and methodological symmetry. Design/methodology/approach A review of experience in service quality management suggests that new approaches are needed. By seeking a way of managing service at different levels, with symmetry between data collection and data analysis, a model is presented that has more potential applicability and flexibility than is found in traditional models. Findings A national study in Namibia, Africa provided data that successfully demonstrate the method of working and illustrate the contextual, analytical and data management issues and the reporting potential out of complex service management data. Research limitations/implications This new approach to the design of service quality measurement and assessment extends the capability that is generally found in other existing approaches. It provides a new foundation for further research into complex patterns of service success and that will establish more clearly the inter-dependencies between service encounters, service attributes and service measures at the survey item level. Practical implications Studies of multiple service sectors and multiple service recipient groups can now gather and manage large complex data sets and analyse and report that data in ways appropriate to the needs of different stakeholders. Social implications In any context where service quality is a socio-economic or development issue, it is now possible to take a more careful and nuanced approach to the collection and aggregation of data, which will inform policy makers and other stakeholder groups at the national or regional level. Originality/value This new model addresses a range of problems that have been reported with historical approaches such as SERVQUAL and related methods of working. It also provides foundations for new designs for large-scale service management data collection, organisation and analysis.

Abstract:
Many real-world spatially related problems, including river-basin planning and management, give rise to geographical information system based decision making, since the performance of spatial policy alternatives were traditionally and are still often represented by thematic maps. Advanced technologies and approaches, such as geographical information systems (GIS), offer a unique opportunity to tackle spatial problems traditionally associated with more efficient and effective data collection, analysis, and alternative evaluation. This paper discusses the advantages and challenges of the use of digital spatial data and geographical information systems in river basis management. Spatial data on social, environmental and other spatial conditions for the study area of 451.77 km2, the Slovenian part of the Sotla river basin, are used to study the GIS capabilities of supporting spatial decisions in the framework of river basin management.

Banks, James H. "Performance Measurement for Traffic Management Systems." Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board 1634, no. 1 (January 1998): 39–45. http://dx.doi.org/10.3141/1634-05.

Full text
Abstract:
Performance measurement refers to attempts to quantify some aspect of the performance of an organization. A study was conducted to analyze needs, opportunities, and techniques for measuring performance of transportation management centers (TMCs). Opportunities and needs were identified by analyzing the interrelationships among performance measurement objectives, objects, and study designs. This analysis suggests that before-and-after evaluation studies of traffic management actions and monitoring of traffic data to detect system changes are the most appropriate forms of performance measurement for TMCs. Important potential measures of effectiveness for traffic management systems include travel time and related measures, ramp delay, traffic volumes, accident rates, traffic information accuracy, incident duration, and equipment status. Techniques are available for quantifying these measures, although there are a number of concerns with data accuracy, especially where travel times are estimated from loop-detector data. Case studies of two California TMCs suggest that, although sophisticated data collection systems are available or planned, the institutional infrastructure to carry out performance measurement may be lacking.

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to show the applicability of machine learning and simulative approaches to the development of decision support systems for railway asset management. These techniques are applied within the generic framework developed and tested within the In2Smart project. The framework is composed by different building blocks, in order to show the complete process from data collection and knowledge extraction to the real-world decisions. The application of the framework to two different real-world case studies is described: the first case study deals with strategic earthworks asset management, while the second case study considers the tactical and operational planning of track circuits’ maintenance. Although different methodologies are applied and different planning levels are considered, both the case studies follow the same general framework, demonstrating the generality of the approach. The potentiality of combining machine learning techniques with simulative approaches to replicate real processes is shown, evaluating the key performance indicators employed within the considered asset management process. Finally, the results of the validation are reported as well as the developed human–machine interfaces for output visualization.

Abstract:
Aim. The paper describes a problem-based learning assignment through which conservation-restoration students become acquainted with the assessment and management of risks to cultural heritage. The assignment includes identification of threats, writing incident scenarios, proposing mitigation measures and identifying persons/institutions that can implement them. All risks are considered in the assignment, not just those related to disasters. Approach/methodology. In the Introduction section, the concept of risk assessment and the context of the assignment are explained. A short description of objects selected as case studies is provided (three sculptures from the Sisak Steelworks Sculpture Park), as well as basic information about the students who worked on the assignment. Next, all the steps of the assignment are described. The final results are only broadly indicated. Findings. Seventy-eight different incident scenarios were identified for outdoor sculptures. To help the reader understand the idea behind the assignment, mitigation measures for three incident scenarios are presented, and potential stakeholders listed. Practical implications. Although the assignment used outdoor sculptures as case studies, it can be applied to any object or collection. The assignment does not have to be included in a preventive conservation course, nor does it have to be directed only to (conservation-restoration) students: it can be used by museum and heritage professionals as a first step in risk assessment for collections. Originality/value. The topic presented in this paper is not well represented in Croatian professional literature. The assignment may be considered innovative in the context of the methodology of teaching conservation-restoration at higher education institutions in Croatia.
