Cury, Laura de Souza. O parque de Ibirapuera e a construção da imagem de um Brasil moderno. Brazil Publishing, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.31012/978-65-5861-366-4.

Full text
Abstract:
This book deals with images of the Ibirapuera Park in the city of São Paulo, favoring a historical perspective and, above all, photographic sources. The main focus lies on photographic representations, because it is believed that the mechanical reproduction of this medium helped to disseminate a certain imaginary about the architectural work, the city and even the country, to the population. The images collected come from important archives and publications – both national and international – in the time period that spans from the 1950s to the 1970s. The research aimed to understand the project of “paulistaneidade” and of national identity that prompted the construction of this monument-park in peripheral socioeconomic circumstances, despite the development the city of São Paulo at the time. The aim of the book is to look into how the architectural, urban and photographic symbols of the Ibirapuera Park helped to produce aesthetic and political sense related to notions of modernity and progress, aiming to transform the urban landscape of São Paulo and of Brazil.

Full text
Abstract:
The ability to make accurate and reproducible measurements requires a detailed knowledge of radiation detection mechanisms, quantities to be measured, basic measurement techniques, and assessment of measurement uncertainties. The chapter begins with an overview of the operational dose quantities and the mechanisms by which measurements are traced to a suitable primary standard. This is followed by some tips on detector selection for both dose rate and contamination applications, before a more detailed description of the basic functional characteristics of gas detectors, scintillation detectors, and semiconductor detector. In each case, suggestions are made on typical areas of use, limitations of performance along with practical examples. Detector resolution issues are discussed for active detectors before a brief overview of passive detector systems including film (photographic and radiochromic) and thermoluminescent dosimetry. The chapter concludes with some common issues in practical measurement and describes the role and importance of the annual instrument test.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter contends that lynching plays served as mechanisms through which African Americans survived the height of mob violence—and its photographic representation—still believing in their right to full citizenship. Lynching plays survive in the archive to enhance our understanding of the United States at the turn into the twentieth century; the genre was developed by African Americans aware of their communities' strategies for living with lynching—strategies that required a keen understanding of U.S. culture. As a genre, black-authored lynching drama sheds unique light on the New Negro, the New South, and the New Woman. As African Americans who had never known legal bondage came of age, they laid claim to unprecedented educational opportunities, and like other Americans, they went about the business of defining the contours of their modern identities.

Cermak, Michael. Spectacular Snakes of Australia. CSIRO Publishing, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643101371.

Full text
Abstract:
Spectacular Snakes of Australia showcases these beautiful creatures which play such an important part in our biodiversity. It portrays most of the species found in Australia, such as tiger snakes, copperheads, brown snakes, death adders and sea snakes, up close and personal. It also includes some unique photographs, such as the hatching of scrub pythons, that offer a rare glimpse into their more intimate lives. The informative text, based on the latest research, describes the reproductive biology, behaviour, predators and prey of these reptiles, as well as their habitat and conservation values. Readers will explore the importance of colours and patterns in allowing snakes to blend into their environment, their defence and attack mechanisms, and the adaptations they have undergone to cope with their surroundings. In addition, the author provides some anecdotes on his encounters with snakes, and clears up a few myths regarding snake behaviour. Richly illustrated with exceptional photographs, Spectacular Snakes of Australia features the deadly serious as well as the quirky – from snakes that love water to those with potent venom, and even snakes that are blind! This book is a real treat for snake lovers.

Kingdom, Frederick A. A., Ali Yoonessi, and Elena Gheorghiu. The Leaning Tower Illusion. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199794607.003.0021.

Full text
Abstract:
The Leaning Tower Illusion is the illusion in which two identical images of the Leaning Tower of Pisa photographed from below, placed side by side, appear to rise at different angles. The illusion is not restricted to the Pisa tower however; it occurs in any pair of identical images of objects that appear to recede into the distance. This chapter argues that the illusion results from the misapplication of the visual system’s in-built mechanisms for correcting the distortions due to perspective in two-dimensional images of three-dimensional scenes. The relationship between the Leaning Tower illusion and size constancy illusions is discussed, and it is concluded that they are likely to be closely related.

Rony, Fatimah Tobing. How Do We Look? Duke University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478021902.

Full text
Abstract:
In How Do We Look? Fatimah Tobing Rony draws on transnational images of Indonesian women as a way to theorize what she calls visual biopolitics—the ways visual representation determines which lives are made to matter more than others. Rony outlines the mechanisms of visual biopolitics by examining Paul Gauguin’s 1893 portrait of Annah la Javanaise—a trafficked thirteen-year-old girl found wandering the streets of Paris—as well as US ethnographic and documentary films. In each instance, the figure of the Indonesian woman is inextricably tied to discourses of primitivism, savagery, colonialism, exoticism, and genocide. Rony also focuses on acts of resistance to visual biopolitics in film, writing, and photography. These works, such as Rachmi Diyah Larasati’s The Dance that Makes You Vanish, Vincent Monnikendam’s Mother Dao (1995), and the collaborative films of Nia Dinata, challenge the naturalized methods of seeing that justify exploitation, dehumanization, and early death of people of color. By theorizing the mechanisms of visual biopolitics, Rony elucidates both its violence and its vulnerability.
