Full textIn this manuscript, an original synthesis of metal phosphide nanoparticles (Ni2P, InP, FeP, Zn3P2) is described first. White phosphorus (P4) was stoichiometrically reacted on metal(0) precursors (organometallic complexes or nanoparticles) in solution and under soft conditions (25-220°C). This unprecedented control of the stoichiometry also allowed the preparation of Ni2P-Ni core-shell nanoparticles, from nickel(0) nanoparticles, via a nanoscaled-induced phase segregation that occurs in each nanoparticle. Secondly, metal phosphide nanoparticles were evaluated as negative electrode for lithium batteries. Calcination of the nanoparticles under inert atmosphere was found to be critical for the electrochemical reaction of lithium with the electrode. Lastly, catalytic properties of Ni2P nanoparticles were investigated. The chemoselective hydrogenation of alkynes was achieved in solution at a low temperature (85°C), compatible with the presence of various functional groups on the alkyne

Full textIn New Caledonia (NC), restoration of open-cat mining sites is far from being mastered. It still needs work, to be improved, especially in plants - soil - microorganisms relationships. These works have focus on description of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) diversity and role in the adaptation of plants to ultramafic constraint, with plant growth promoting rhibzobacteria (PGPR). The diversity of AMF is analyzed on two plant genera with species on ultramafic soils, nickel hyperaccumulat ing or not, and on volcano-sedimentary soils. The analysis of this diversity shows that community composition is contrasted between the two types of soil. Some of AMF taxa seem to be specific to ultramafic soils and some even to be specific to nickel hyperaccumulator species. For the role in adaptation of plants to ultramafic constraints, greenhouse experiments on three endemic species (Alphitonia meocaledonica, Carpolepis laurifolia and Costularia comosa) have shown that naturally brings mycorrhiza improved growth, mineral nutrition, water and Ca /Mg ration. Phosphorus additions seem to change these effects with different consequences on growth according to the host plant. Finally, the use of PGPR alone or with AMF showed that the effect depends on host plant species and bacterial strain, but usually leads to improved growth and plant nutrition. These studies have shown the importance of AMF in ultramafic soils NC

Full textThis manuscript presents an original synthesis of nickel(0) nanoparticles. The use of a nickel(II) dioleylamide precursor results in a versatile, robust, water-free method for the production of size-tunable particles between 4 - 11 nm in diameter. This method was extended to form small iron(0) and cobalt(0) nanoparticles. These particles were examined for catalytic activity, including the hydrosilylation of a terminal alkene, the selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene to styrene, and the substoichiometric reduction of nitrogen to tris(trimethylsilyl)amine. White phosphorus (P4) was stoichiometrically reacted with the metal(0) nanoparticles to form the corresponding metal phosphide nanoparticles. White phosphorus was alternatively functionalized using superhydride (LiBEt3H) to form a borane-stabilized phosphanide species, LiPH2(BEt3)2. This species was used to synthesize various phosphines, including phosphine, tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphine, and triaroylphosphines. The labile triethylborane adducts were replaced by BH3, resulting in the formation of LiPH2(BH3)2, which may have applications in the formation of P-B polymers

Full textIn this thesis work, the use of metal-containing nanoparticles such as carbides, oxides and phosphides is explored for colloidal catalysis. In an attempt to build a Frustrated Lewis Pair (FLP)-like catalytic system for H2 activation, the synergy with a molecular Lewis base is assessed. In the bibliographic introduction, the stakes and the challenges of H2 activation in solvent are presented, with an emphasis on the use of non-purely metallic catalysts for the hydrogenation of model compounds. In the first part, early transition metal carbides and hydrides are synthesized via solid-state metathesis. The influence of process parameters is explored to tune the phase speciation in the products. The most promising carbon-supported catalysts, Mo2C/C and W2C/C, are studied for gas phase and liquid phase hydrogenations of olefins. In the second part, cerium and indium oxides are obtained via hydrothermal pathways. The relevance of oxygen defects in CeO2-x is established for H2 gas phase activation and semi-hydrogenation of phenylacetylene in solvent. The last part is dedicated to the non-aqueous syntheses of molybdenum and tungsten oxides, and nickel carbide and phosphides. The syntheses mechanisms are studied by means of NMR for the organic species and XAS and XRD for the nature of the inorganic species. The catalytic activity of the unsupported nanoparticles is finally evaluated for the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene and phenylacetylene in various solvents

Full textIn this work electrodeposited Ni-P/SiC composites coatings had been electrodeposited from a nickel salts solution containing H3PO3 and SiC particles in suspension (600nm and 30nm). Through measures of viscosity and sedimentation speed it was evidenced that the size of particles is a very important characteristic and it influences in the suspension stability. We had shown that organic additives modifies the characteristic of suspensions. Depending on size particles the organic additives can change the number of incorporated particles. It was observed that depending on the particles concentration in suspension, the number of incorporated particles in deposits can be changed. The incorporation rate evaluated as a function of the fraction in volume reaches a plateau, but continues to increase if it´s evaluated as a function of the number of particles. For the suspensions with raised particles concentration, the incorporation process becomes selective, and the particles with small size are preferentially incorporated. Microhardness measurements, thermal analysis and electrochemical analysis, (cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) were used to evaluate the influence of the amount and distribution of SiC incorporated particles on the microhardness, corrosion and thermal behaviour of Ni-P/SiC composite coating

Full textThe aim of this research project is to promote the formation of new C-C bonds and the production of valuable chemicals by using chelated nickel complexes. The first part of this thesis is dedicated to [nickel(bis-phosphine)] complexes employed as catalysts for Negishi cross coupling reactions. Designed Ni(0) precatalyst [(dcpp)Ni(n2-toluene)] (dcpp = 1,3-bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)propane) promotes efficiently the Negishi cross coupling between aryl chlorides and phenylzinc chloride derivatives at low catalyst loadings (down to 0.2 mol% - 1 mol%) under mild conditions (THF, 60°C). Mechanistic investigations relying on stoichiometric reactions and DFT calculations prove the involvement of Ni(0)/Ni(II) intermediates rather than Ni(I)/Ni(III) species during the catalysis. The second part of this work deals with the oxidative coupling between ethylene and CO2 at bis-phosphine and bis-NHC chelated nickel complexes for the production of value-added chemicals. The equilibrium between [(dcpp)Ni(C2H4)] and [(dcpp)nickelalactone] has been investigated by kinetic studies. The subsequent cleavage of [(dcpp) nickelalactone] by pinacolborane leads to its reductive functionalization into a propanol derivative. Preliminary mechanistic and catalytic investigations have been undertaken. Moreover, new methodologies are provided for the synthesis of the first [(bis-NHC)Ni(C2H4)] and [(bis-NHC)nickelalactone] complexes

Full textThe phosphating processes are widely used in industry as surface treatments for metals, especially for low thickness plates, improving the adhesion between the metallic surface and the paint coating, and increasing the durability of paint systems against corrosion attacks. The tricationic phosphates containing zinc, nickel and manganese are commonly applied on steel. There is much discussion about the replacement of nickel by another element in order to have an environmentally friendly phosphating process. Niobium as a replacement for nickel has been evaluated. The most significant environmental impacts of phosphating processes are related to the presence of nickel and hexavalent chromium used in the process, this last as a passivation treatment. Nickel and hexavalent chromium are harmful to human and environment leading to contamination of water and soil. In the present study phosphate layers containing zinc, manganese and niobium have been evaluated and characterized on galvanized steel, and the results were compared with phosphates containing zinc, manganese and nickel, or a bicationic phosphate layer with zinc and manganese. Although the use of hexavalent chromium is not recommended worldwide, it is still used in processes for sealing the porosity of phosphate layers. This element is carcinogenic and has been associated with various diseases. Due to the passivation characteristics of niobium, this study also evaluated the tricationic bath containing niobium ammonium oxalate as a passivation treatment. The results showed that it could act as a replacement for the hexavalent chromium. The results of the present study showed that formulations containing niobium are potential replacements for hexavalent chromium and similar corrosion protection was obtained for the phosphate containing nickel or that with niobium. The morphology observed by scanning electron microscopy, gravimetric tests, porosity and adhesion evaluation results indicated that the phosphate obtained with passivation treatment in niobium containing solution could be considered as a promising alternative to replace passivation with hexavalent chromium ions. Despite of the promising results, adjustments in the baths to obtain stability are still needed and should guide the next steps of the subject of this research.

Boron phosphide, BP, is a III-V compound semiconductor with a wide band gap of 2.0 eV that is potentially useful in solid state neutron detectors because of the large thermal neutron capture cross-section of the boron-10 isotope (3840 barns). In this study, cubic BP crystals were grown by crystallizing dissolved boron and phosphorus from a nickel solvent in a sealed (previously evacuated) quartz tube. The boron - nickel solution was located at one end of the tube and held at 1150°C. Phosphorus, initially at the opposite end of the tube at a temperature of 430°C, vaporized, filling the tube to a pressure of 1–5 atmospheres. The phosphorus then dissolved into solution, producing BP. Transparent red crystals up to 4 mm in the largest dimension with mostly hexagonal shape were obtained with a cooling rate of 3°C per hour. The crystal size decreased as the cooling rate increased, and also as growth time decreased. The characterization with x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy established that the BP produced through this method were highly crystalline. The lattice constant of the crystals was 4.534 Ǻ, as measured by x-ray diffraction. Intense, sharp Raman phonon peaks were located at 800 cm[superscript]-1 and 830 cm[superscript]-1, in agreement with the values reported in the literature. The FWHM for XRD and Raman spectra were 0.275° and 4 cm[superscript]-1 which are the narrowest ever reported and demonstrates the high quality of the produced crystals. Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) also confirmed the synthesized crystals were cubic BP crystals, with a boron to phosphorus atomic ratio of 1:1. Defect selective etching of BP at 300ºC for two minutes with molten KOH/NaOH revealed triangular and striated etch pits with low densities of defects of ~4 x 10[superscript]7 cm[superscript]-2 and 9.2 x 10[superscript]7 cm[superscript]-2 respectively. The BP crystals were n-type, and an electron mobility of ~39.8 cm[superscript]2/V*s was measured. This is favorable for application in neutron detection. Scaling to larger sizes is the next step through gradient freezing and employing a larger crucible.

Full textPhosphabarrelenes are unique ligands among phosphines: they combine a very rare set of properties as they are at once sterically hindered and electronically acceptor. The first part of this work deals with the consequences in several palladium catalytic processes involved by these properties. Every single step of the catalytic cycles is thus analyzed both by experimental and theoretical approaches and observations are considered with references to the ligand properties. Some advantages of using phosphabarrelenes are found especially for the two elementary steps of transmetallation and reductive elimination. Conclusions are finally given thanks to the two angles of computational calculation and experimentation. In a second time, the study goes on with nickel. Even though its association with phosphabarrelenes looks promising, these complexes turn out to be poorly efficient compared to already reported examples. The study is thus refocused on carbenes, another familly of ligands. These two first parts exhibit the interest that bidental phosphabarrelenes could have. The synthesis of such molecules is the main objective of the final part. In particular, mechanisms leading to these functionalized phosphines starting with the corresponding phosphinines are investigated, either by nucleophilic addition or Diels-Alder reaction

Full textWe described herein a new method for the synthesis of allylics ethers through the selective hydroalcoxylation of dienes with alcohols from nickel based catalysts. The different factors governing the reactivity and selectivity during of the reaction were identified and optimized in order to drive to satisfying yields. In order to exemplify this methodology, new compounds were synthesized from a range of alcohols and dienes. As part of a biomass valorization thematic, we were interested by the diene hydroalcoxylation reaction with biobased alcohols. This synthetic method was applied to diols and polyols from renewable resources transformation such as glycerol. Hydroxyl-ethers are compounds of interest, especially glycerol ethers due to their amphiphilic structure and potential use as fuel additives. During this study, a special interest was dedicated to the mechanism comprehension through a combined organometallic and computational approach in this reaction

Full textThis thesis contributes to the medical implants field, which is stimulated by many advances in the fields of microelectronics and microsensors. However, electrical energy lifespan of implants and large size of batteries are still a problem. Our work aims at pushing back these limits. It contributes to the development of a solution based on mechanical energy harvesting from the heart motion. The objective is to sustainably power a new generation of pacemakers without lead, so-called "leadless pacemakers."The studied energy harvesting microsystem consists in a spring-mass-type mechanical resonator associated with an electrostatic transducer. Its originality comes from a three-dimensional architecture, whose shape fits pretty well with the cylindrical shape of the pacemaker capsule. The use of the third dimension combined with an original design enables to get a pseudo multiplication frequency effect. Thanks to this effect, our simulation models predict power densities significantly higher than state-of-the-art figures reported in literature. To fabricate this three-dimensional microsystem, we have developed an additive manufacturing process based on steps of micro-molding of a structural material (electroplated nickel), electroplating of a sacrificial material (copper) and planarization. Identification of imperfections related to the fabrication process and the materials used allowed us to improve the design of the transducer. Moreover, many manufacturing obstacles were overcome during this thesis through the implementation of dedicated instrumentation. This new process has enabled us to fabricate a first three-dimensional prototype of the electrostatic micro-transducer made of 10 layers of nickel. Other electroplated metals can be envisaged to achieve three-dimensional microsystems, depending on the application requirements. In order to anticipate any compatibility issue of our microsystem with magnetic resonance imaging, we have developed the electrodeposition process of a nonmagnetic material: phosphorous doped nickel
