Abstract:
The pair of biographies Phocion – Cato the Younger begins by establishing, in the Life of Phocion, a comparison between the two protagonists that is illustrated and developed in the internal comparison that Plutarch implicitly traces throughout the two Lives. This can be seen, among other aspects, in their political vocation and in the description of their character and oratory. There is also a close parallel between these biographies and that of Cato the Elder, reinforced by the comparison of their protagonists with Socrates, which evokes the ideal image of the politician inspired by philosophy.

Abstract:
Editor's note: In its October 2004 issue, this journal published a vivid account by Lewis Saum, the well-known historian of the nineteenth-century press, of the dispatches and misadventures of Chicago reporter James “Phocion” Howard during the Black Hills gold rush of 1875. A complete product of an age when news correspondents made no pretence of detachment and no effort to avoid becoming part of their stories, Howard, through what he wrote and what he did, was the sort of reporter who contributed mightily to the image of the post-Civil War era as a Gilded Age. This brief account follows Howard back a little in time, to 1873, when he was noisily bursting illusions along the line of the Northern Pacific Railroad just at the moment when that line's bankruptcy hurled the country into its worst economic collapse in decades.

Abstract:
As paroemium or adagium, the “Evangelia immolare” was invented by Caelius Rhodiginus (Lodovico Ricchieri), who inserted it in his Antiquarum lectionum libri XVI upon Plutarch’s Phocionis vita. Rhodiginus’ monumental collection was in fact faded among Erasmus’ more monumental Adagia, published 8 years earlier as the first edition of Rhodiginus’ Antiquarum lectionum. The peculiar adagium however (translating transitively the verb immolare it’s sense is more than odd) was inserted to the Adagia-collection of Erasmus’ last famulus and pupil, Gilbertus Cognatus, and to that of the Hungarian paroemiographer and historian János Baranyai Decsi. Furthermore, it was reused at the very end of a very specific diplomatic letter of the Polish grand chancellor Jan Zamoyski to the Transylvanian prince Sigismund Báthory in 1593, as a final and encrypted message warning him (like an other Phocion) not to involve into the war against the Turk. Following the way of this particular paroemium (supposedly made up by misreading or misinterpretation) we can detect the linguistic nature of humanism and to measure our boundaries for a genuine comprehension of early modern literary culture in its complexity.

Abstract:
Published in 1873, Mark Twain's and Charles Dudley Warner's The Gilded Age went on stage two years later. By the book and the play, Colonel Mulberry Sellers became, at least to some, a dramatic illustration of what was afoot in that era. In March, 1875, the Chicago Times carried an entertainment notice for the opening of that play in that city. This account told that the author of the book and the playwright had envisioned Lawrence Barrett for a role in the play; but it dawned on them that someone with more of a comedic inclination would do better. Perhaps an intimation of that change of tone can be seen in a change of name. The colonel of the novel had a biblical first name, Beriah (Genesis 46–17). That colonel now became Mulberry Sellers, and a humorous actor, John T. Raymond, entered the scene for which Lawrence Barrett had been considered. As this Chicago Times writer put it, the play, with Raymond, had created a “sensation” in New York City, in a run of 120 days. Now Chicago would share the excitement.

Abstract:
After the defeat of the Greek forces in the Lamian War the Athenians agreed to Antipater's demand for unconditional surrender. As result of the terms the Macedonian general demanded Phocion became pre-eminent in Athens for a few years from 322/1 to 319/8 B.C. It is my belief that, although he did not seek to become leader in Athens, Phocion none-the-less accepted his new role out of a sense of duty and a firm belief that he was the only person suited for the job. Here was a man whose logical, pragmatic and unemotional attitude to political and world affairs enabled him to rise above what he believed to be the short-sightedness of his contemporaries and accurately assess the future for Athens and the city-state's place in the new world order. Of course our picture of Phocion is taken, mainly, from Plutarch's encomiastic Life of Phocion. According to his account the Athenian general and statesman did not want war but peace and prosperity. He did not believe the Athenians capable of defeating Macedonia. Instead, he felt that the people should accept their new position in the world and make the best of the situation. It should not be forgotten, however, that Plutarch was writing at a time when Europe was under the yoke of the new superpower: Rome. He saw the benefits of living in Greece at a time when the city-states were no longer continually involved in internecine warfare. It was, perhaps, this appreciation of the state of his own world, gained with the benefit of hindsight, that gave rise to his admiration of (what he perceived to be) Phocion's foresight. Phocion appeared to understand, as Plutarch did, that there was no reason why Athens could not still be prosperous. Plutarch's Phocion saw the city-state's future as no longer being primarily reliant on military preparedness but rather on trade and sound economic policy. With the protection of the powerful Macedonian overlord Athens would be free to enjoy life in relative peace and prosperity. Ultimately, Plutarch has had a significant influence on our understanding and appreciation of Phocion the general, statesman and man. The aim of this paper then is, with the use of other primary and secondary sources, to look beyond Plutarch's encomium and attempt to find the real Phocion. In particular, I will be examining the aging general's role in Athenian affairs after the Lamian War. This pivotal time in Athenian history has received too little attention. Life in Athens changed dramatically after Antipater defeated the Greek forces at the Battle of Crannon. The Athenians lost their freedom and autonomy and were fated never to regain the hegemony of the Greeks. Moreover, they had failed to live up to the glorious deeds of their ancestors. It was Phocion's task to help his people to come to terms with this new state of affairs and to find a place for Athens in the new world order. And so, political life in Athens was turned upside down as democracy was changed to oligarchy.

Abstract:
Dealing with an area of about 500 km2 around Delphi, central Greece, this work considers the territories and boundaries of ancient cities (4e cent bc-3e cent ad) a study of homonyms known written evidence and a census of archaeological remains allow to determine the position of cities and a better knowledge of the use of their country, through the discovery of "fortified farms". The edition and commentary of the inscriptions regarding the boundaries bring out the chronology of the decisions and the juridical procedures involved in solving conflicts between cities. The respective parts of natural and artificial landmarks in defining boundaries are evaluated, as well as the role of sanctuaries and the supervision of boudaries. Finally, it is shown that two neighboring territories, the one of the city of Delphi and the one of Apollo, must be distinguished, and the juridical status of their lands , as well as their cultivation procedures, are studied

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the Phocian Chalk Raid of the Thessalian camp circa 490, the most illustrative example of the Phocians' collective capabilities during the late Archaic and early classical periods. Studying the accounts of Herodotus, Pausanias, and Polyaenus, it reconstructs a historiographically marginalized, violent encounter that involved some of the most unusual military tactics ever employed between Greeks. Indeed, the encounter defies virtually every established convention of classical Greek warfare. The Phocians' defensive strategy reflects a sound understanding of the potential threats that surrounded their ethnos. Ultimately, the defense of circa 490 illustrates that even without a formal federal structure, the Phocians still constituted a well-organized and effective political entity. Since an ethnic affiliation, common coinage, and a common meeting place distinguished later koina (federal states), the possibility remains that a federal state existed in Phocis during the time in question. But the point is that there did not need to be a formal federal state in Phocis for an effective defense.

Abstract:
The epilogue sums up the steps and ways in which Demades’s traditional image emerged and developed as a rhetorical construct reflecting the educational needs, social norms, and political realities of later centuries. His lack of rhetorical schooling—and method—meant that Demades’s oratory was successful only because of his flattery and subservience. All of this was entirely logical to the pepaideumenoi, who saw one’s oratorical style as corresponding to his moral character: Demades’s oratory, manners, politics, and looks were all thoroughly corrupt. This Demades was juxtaposed with Demosthenes and Phocion, whose images also underwent a rhetorical reinterpretation; each of them furnished students over many centuries with positive and negative examples, molding later perceptions of the past. The rhetorical Demades illustrates the limits of our vision of classical Greece, which we mostly know from much later literary texts that projected the values and interests of subsequent generations.
