Abstract:
Assim, a filosofia enquanto explicitação transcendental das condições de possibilidade do conhecimento teológico constitui um momento interno de seu próprio trabalho.ABSTRACT: Parting from the usual conception among Catholics about the difference between philosophy and theology, K. Rahner develops a provocative thesis: philosophy is an interior moment which theology itself presupposes as its condition of possibility. He legitimizes his thesis first theologically: the relation between nature and grace, revelation and theology, universal history and the special history of salvation and revelation; and then, philosophically: the human being is self-comprehension and comprehension of the totality of being. Theology, insofar as a human activity, is subordinated as any knowledge to the necessary conditions of all human knowledge. Thus, philosophy, as transcendental expression of the conditions of possibility of theological knowledge, establishes an interior moment of theological activity itself.

Mann, Sally. "The notion of the self with special reference to Karl Rahner and Julia Kristeva." Thesis, University of Greenwich, 2006. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/6237/.

Full text
Abstract:
This work considers Karl Rahner’s theology of the person as hearer through a critical engagement with Julia Kristeva’s post-structuralist notion of the speaking subject. This offers an experimental exploration of contemporary theological understanding of subjectivity, with specific reference to ideas of relationality, and with a particular interest in the possibility of dialogue with post-structuralist ideas. From separate disciplines, with different tools and to different effects, Rahner and Kristeva reject the modernist cast of the human self. They demonstrate a common desire to explore subjectivity as a notion that has been problematised. In examining the person as hearer and the speaking subject together we discover a surprising number of areas of coherence as well as those of fundamental divergence. To this end we consider our theorisits’ pre-supposed arenas for human subjectivity, their epistemologies, and the importance each gives to language and otherness. We also examine how they relate intra- and inter-relationality. For Kristeva this involves a consideration of notions of the M/Other, the semiotic and the stranger in society. With Rahner we consider the social Trinity, the self-alienation of symbolism and the concept of neighbour-love. We suggest here that Rahner both pre-empts aspects of current theological interest in subjectivity and provides important resources that are especially useful in relating theology to post-structuralist notions.

Purcell, Michael. "Mystery and method : the mystery of the other, and its reduction in Rahner and Levinas." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/12250.

Full text
Abstract:
Karl Rahner, responding to the problems raised by Kant's critical philosophy, sought to present a Thomistic metaphysics of realism in a modern thought-form through a reduction of the interrogative thrust of the intellect to its possibility conditions, and so, like Marechal before him, attain an absolute affirmation of Being. Rahner's transcendental system, however, would seem to have been overtaken by a more existential stress in phenomenological thinking. Emmanuel Levinas, with his thought of the Other and his attempt at an excendence from Being, would seem at first glance to sit uncomfortably alongside Rahner's system, yet, a closer reading of both unearths a remarkable convergence in their thinking. The deeper phenomenological reduction which Levinas undertakes to reveal the inter-subjective context of consciousness helps to humanise Rahner's approach. This thesis attempts a fruitful confrontation of both thinkers by, firstly, indicating the tension between Rahner's own philosophical propaedeutic and his theological writings, particularly on grace, mystery and the love of God and neighbour, where he affirms that human existence is ultimately reductio in mysterium and that human fulfilment is to be found in a personal relationship with a human Other. A second purpose is to show how these same theological themes can be developed from within Levinas' own thought, and how his own philosophy can provide a worthwhile context for Christian theology. The thesis unfolds by considering the various methods - metaphysical, transcendental and phenomenological - which surround both thinkers (Chapter 1) and then proceeds to outline their various philosophical influences (Chapter 2). Since the notion of Being as self-presence is fundamental in Rahner, and since Levinas refuses a philosophy of presence, Chapter 3 questions the privilege of presence. This will lead, in its turn, to a rethinking of the notion of subjectivity: the subject is not to be consider as presence-to-self but as a relationship with the Other (Chapter 4). This relationship is experienced in Desire (Chapter 5) and in the responsibility experienced before the face of the Other (Chapter 6). The relation between ethics (the good) and Being is pursued in chapter 7. Finally, the notion of mystery is indicated as the theme which inspires the work of both Rahner and Levinas (Chapter 8). Rahner's unmastered mystery will become Levinas' incomprehensible infinity in the presence of which the subject is called to response and responsibility.

Abstract:
A significant amount of work has transpired over the past several years in generating consensus-based standards that include ASME PCC-2 and ISO 24817 for developing composite repair systems. The intent in developing these standards has been to provide industry with guidelines for designing composite repair systems to ensure that damaged piping and pipelines are safely and properly reinforced. With the numerous composite repair systems currently available to operators, the importance of evaluating the capabilities of each system cannot be overstated. The fundamental design variables available to manufacturers are stiffness, strength, and thickness of the composite. A properly-designed repair system ensures that strains in the reinforced steel and reinforcing composite material do not reach unacceptable levels. This paper provides a basic overview of the design philosophy embedded into the current design codes, as well as presenting results associated with several specific studies that were conducted to evaluate composite repair performance.

Abstract:
A feasibility study for developing Advanced Power Reactor Plus (APR+), an improved nuclear power unit to succeed to the Korea’s current Advanced Power Reactor 1400 MWe (APR1400), has been carried out for 2 years from August 2007 to July 2009. The major goals of this study are to identify top-tier requirements for the candidate APR+, to develop a preliminary design concept, and to evaluate conceptual design in terms of safety, economics, and performance characteristics. From this study, it is presumed that the APR+ can be developed as a two loop evolutionary pressurized water reactor with a number of advanced design features to enhance safety and economics based on the APR1400 technology. For economic enhancement, the APR+ core power has increased up to 4,290 MWth which corresponds to a 1500MWe class nuclear power plant. Several new construction technologies are introduced so as to shorten construction period. For safety enhancement, several advanced design features have been proposed in APR+ design such as an improved direct vessel injection (DVI+), an advanced fluidic device (FD+), a passive auxiliary feedwater system (PAFS), and a mechanical and electrical four train safety concept based on N+2 design philosophy. As accident mitigation features are improved, the in-vessel retention through external reactor vessel cooling (IVR-ERVC) system will be incorporated. The standard design of APR+ is in progress and expected to acquire the standard design approval from the Korean nuclear regulatory body by the end of 2012.

Full text
Abstract:
The majority of United States Commercial Nuclear Power Plants (CNPP) within the next 10 years will reach the end of their license to operate and can be renewed per the “Atomic Energy Act” of 1954. This act allowed the commission to issue commercial electric power nuclear plants a license to operate (“licensed, but not to exceed 40 years, and maybe renewed upon the expiration of such period, (Chapter 10, Sec. 103(c))).” These CNPP licenses are also governed by the NSSS vendor specification requirements and by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) design code standards. This connection is in the form of a stress report that defines the “cyclic life” adequacy criteria for this operational limit of 40 years. The license extension subsequently requires a reconstitution of the initial design stress report input parameters per ASME IWA-4120, 4223 & 4311 (e) for the renewal period extension. This requirement can entail an analysis of the operating conditions and cycles to demonstrate the material elasticity is maintained. The proposed approach for this reconstitution effort was a reanalysis in the form of a study of the Nuclear Steam System Supplier (NSSS) vendors’ original methodology to determine the NSSS vendor specification requirement for ASME code compliance and “cyclic life” adequacy. The information acquired from this evaluation has demonstrated the application to be a complex and simplistic approach. This effort to unravel the composite loading (thermal and pressure transients) condition in relation to specific plant and incident cycles provides both an understanding of component end-of-life limits and supports a comprehensive template for future fatigue life management programs. This paper summarizes this reconstituting effort that utilizes the original vessel stress analysis report to support the license renewal effort, provides a template for future fatigue management programs, demonstrates the conservatism of design, and offers an insight into the design philosophy revealing an elegant process that assures against failures.

Full text
Abstract:
During fabrication of Pressure Vessels, steels undergo several heat treatments that aim to confer the required properties on the entire equipment, including welds and base metal. Indeed, the Quality heat treatment of the base material, which leads to achieve the target properties, is most of the time followed by Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT). The aim of such treatments is to insure a good behaviour of the welded zones in terms of residual stresses and obviously properties such as toughness. Generally, many simulated PWHT (up to 4 or more) are required for the testing of the base material, which can affect its properties and even lead to non acceptable results. In some cases for fabrication purposes an intermediate Stress relieving treatment can be required. Special attention is paid on C-Mn steels (e.g. SA/A516 from ASME BPV Code) with the effect of thickness and Ceq (IIW Carbon equivalent formula: see page 3) requirements on the final compromise between properties and heat treatments. In particular, toughness and UTS are the critical parameters that will limit the acceptance of too high PWHT. Although micro-alloying is a mean to increase the resistance to PWHT, this leads to difficulties in softening the heat affected zones. This solution is therefore not the best one considering the whole equipment optimisation. Finally, the manufacturing process can play a major role when specifications are stringent. Quenching and tempering can indeed provide better flexibility in terms of PWHT and improved toughness for given Ceq and thickness. The case of Cr-Mo(-V) steels, which are widely used in the energy industry, is also addressed. Indeed, PWHT requirements for increasing the toughness in the weld metal can lead to decrease the base metal properties below the specification limits. For example, the case of SA/A387gr11 is very typical of metallurgical changes that can occur during these high PWHT leading to a degradation of toughness in the base metal. Another focus is made on the Vanadium Cr-Mo grade SA/A542D that must withstand very high PWHT (705°C and even 710°C) because of welds toughness issues. Optimisation has therefore to be done to increase the resistance to softening and to guarantee acceptable microstructure, especially in the case of thick wall vessels. Some ways for improvement are proposed on the basis of the equivalent LMP tempering parameter concept. The basic philosophy is to fulfil the need for discussion between companies involved in pressure vessels fabrication so that the best compromise can be found to ensure the best and safest behaviour of the equipment as a whole.
