Abstract:
The authors adopt a critico‐sociological methodology to investigate the current state of the philosophical profession. According to them, the question concerning the status of philosophy (“What is philosophy?”) cannot be answered from within the precinct of philosophical reason alone, since philosophy—understood primarily as a profession—is marked by a constitutive type of self‐ignorance that prevents it from reflecting upon its own sociological conditions of actuality. This ignorance, which is both cause and effect of the organization and investment of philosophical desire, causes philosophers to lose themselves in an ideological myth (“the philosopher as idea(l)”) according to which philosophers are unaffected by the material conditions in which they exist. This myth prevents philosophers from noticing the extent to which their activity is influenced by extra‐philosophical determinants that shape, empirically, who becomes a professional philosopher (“the philosopher as imago”) and who doesn't. This article explores the relationship between philosophy's “idea(l)” and its “imago” as a way of shedding light on some of the mechanisms that make philosophy inhospitable for so many women, people of color, and economic minorities.

Abstract:
There is, to all appearances, a philosophic hostility to fashionable dress. Studying this contempt, this paper examines likely sources in philosophy's suspicion of change; anxiety about surfaces and the inessential; failures in the face of death; and the philosophic disdain for, denial of, the human body and human passivity. If there are feminist concerns about fashion, they should be radically different from those of traditional philosophy. Whatever our ineluctable worries about desire and death, whatever our appropriate anger and impatience with the merely superficial, whatever our genuine need to mark off the serious from the trivial, feminism may be a corrective therapy for philosophy's bad humor and self-deception, as these manifest themselves when the subject turns to beautiful clothes.

Bettcher, Talia Mae. "What Is Trans Philosophy?" Hypatia 34, no. 4 (2019): 644–67. http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/hypa.12492.

Abstract:
In this article, I explore the question “What is trans philosophy?” by viewing trans philosophy as a contribution to the field of trans studies. This requires positioning the question vis à vis Judith Butler's notion of philosophy's Other (that is, the philosophical work done outside of the boundaries of professional philosophy), as trans studies has largely grown from this Other. It also requires taking seriously Susan Stryker's distinction between the mere study of trans phenomena and trans studies as the coming to academic voice of trans people. Finally, it requires thinking about the types of questions that emerge when philosophy is placed within a multidisciplinary context: (1) What does philosophy have to offer? (2) Given that philosophy typically does not use data, what grounds philosophical claims about the world? (3) What is the relation between philosophy and “the literature”? In attempting to answer these questions, I examine the notion of philosophical perplexity and the relation of philosophy to “the everyday.” Rather than guiding us to perplexity, I argue, trans philosophy attempts to illuminate trans experiences in an everyday that is confusing and hostile. Alternative socialities are required, I argue, in order to make trans philosophy possible.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article provides an overview of the contributions to philosophy of Nigerian philosopher Sophie Bọ´sẹ`dé Olúwọlé (1935–2018). The first woman to earn a philosophy PhD in Nigeria, Olúwọlé headed the Department of Philosophy at the University of Lagos before retiring to found and run the Centre for African Culture and Development. She devoted her career to studying Yoruba philosophy, translating the ancient Yoruba Ifá canon, which embodies the teachings of Orunmila, a philosopher revered as an Óríṣá in the Ifá pantheon. Seeing his works as examples of secular reasoning and argument, she compared Orunmila's and Socrates' philosophies and methods and explored similarities and differences between African and European philosophies. A champion of African oral traditions, Olúwọlé argued that songs, proverbs, liturgies, and stories are important sources of African responses to perennial philosophical questions as well as to contemporary issues, including feminism. She argued that the complementarity that ran throughout Yoruba philosophy guaranteed women's rights and status, and preserved an important role for women, youths, and foreigners in politics.

Abstract:
The general mission of feminist philosophy is to correct whatever male biases may exist in the mainstream philosophical traditions . Thus western feminist philosophers investigate and challenge the ways in which western traditions have so long been participating in subordinating women or in rationalizing their subordination . By questioning the gender insensitivity of ethics and philosophy , feminism attempts to reveal various forms of subjugation of women operating through laws , institutions , customs , social theories , and cultural values. Feminism aims at coming up with a better design for society , based on a thorough review and rethinking of gendered positioning of human beings.

Two studies of women in philosophy, Michéle Le Doeuff's biography of Simone de Beauvoir Hipparchia's Choice (1991) and Fritz Mauthner's historical novel Hypatia (1892), question what kind of power and authority are available to philosophers. Mauthner's philosophy of language expands on Le Doeuff to outline how philosophy acts parallel to other sociohistorical discourses, relying on public consensus and on the negotiation of stereotypes to create a viable speaking subject for the female philosopher.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines how gender and temporality are co-constitutive of one another and what temporalities underlie the actuality of gendered life. I weave together the insights of feminist phenomenology and feminist poststructuralism in order to argue that temporality produces and constrains the actuality of lived gender as racialized, heterosexist, and cissexist. More specifically, I argue that this is done through sexual violence. Ultimately, I suggest that the temporality of sexual violence is encrusted into the dominant configurations of gender and into the bodily life of gendered subjects solidifying what gendered subjectivity can become.

Abstract:
Philosophy
Ph.D.
In this study I advance the thesis that Simone de Beauvoir's account of the development of subjectivity is based in a consideration of the Hegelian description of the development of subjectivity in the Phenomenology of Spirit. Like Hegel, Beauvoir argues that an aspect of the development of subjectivity is the ability to discover oneself as related to the collective world. Additionally, she shows through her various works that individual identity and freedom are conditioned by the possibility for intersubjective recognition, and development of a project within an ambiguous relationship between the self, others, and the shared social world. Nevertheless, throughout history this foundation for the possibility of freedom has often been lacking and more so for some groups than others, which points us to an important difference in focus in Hegel and Beauvoir's work. For one, the subject in the idealized Hegelian account comes to recognize its power and freedom as it progresses in its connections and influence within the world. But, for those who have historically lacked options (women, those who happen to be black, the poor, etc.) transcendence in terms of the actualization of one's identity and recognized participation in the collective is at best often co-opted or concealed and at worst impossible. Thus, one of the central differences between Hegel's narrative in the Phenomenology and Beauvoir's in The Second Sex is that for women the cycle is a building up of deception, not a progression to clarity and understanding. This progression as Beauvoir shows is neither natural nor perfect, rather it depends upon the possibilities historically granted to specific social groups and denied to others. The central focus of this study is Beauvoir's analysis of the process of becoming (a) woman, but it is not limited to this. Rather, I argue that through engaging with Beauvoir's philosophy, including her appeal to Hegel, we (1) come to understand the ambiguity of the human condition, desire, intention, and identity, (2) the bad faith that often manifests in our relations with others, and (3) the existence of the spectrums of oppression and privilege. There are, of course, several ways to approach the study of historical figures in philosophy. We can treat them as though they are our contemporaries, analyzing their arguments and clarifying their ideas with the intention of showing their relevance to our contemporary concerns. Or, we can study them in their historical contexts with an eye toward tracing the development of their doctrines, attempting as we go to restructure them within their historical situations and as individuals. Both of these approaches have their benefits and drawbacks. In the former, we succeed in making Beauvoir and Hegel relevant as participants in our contemporary dialogues; but we may be making them relevant through reading our own contemporary views and concerns into their texts. In taking the latter approach, we do not use these historical figures as mere mouths, but through reifying them in their historical context we may find them to be less relevant. In what follows I seek to strike a balance between these approaches, especially in that I am engaging a philosophical predecessor (Beauvoir) who is engaging a philosophical predecessor (Hegel). In order to do this I look at the context in which Beauvoir is using Hegel, the influence of her closest philosophical companions on her use of Hegel, and how feminists have since used Beauvoir's philosophy to address contemporary problems. And while I understand the purpose of philosophy to be in fact engagement, rather than a process of historical excavation, I believe that through examining these various relations we can use historical figures to analyze and resolve the urgent social, political, and theoretical issues of our time, while simultaneously understanding that the times in which they originally philosophized may be vastly different from our own.

Abstract:
Philosophy
Ph.D.
Gendered power relations in sport pose important problems for mainstream feminist and ethical arguments for the alleviation of gender-based oppression. Though mainstream feminist theorists and applied ethicists have largely left sport undertheorized, some multi- and inter-disciplinary scholarly attention has been devoted to analyzing gender and sport. However, this scholarship encompasses disparate lines of thought with a range of philosophical, political, disciplinary, methodological and theoretical commitments, which translate into conflicting and competing normative views on how to best conceptualize, theorize, and practically navigate gender relations in sporting contexts. My dissertation remedies the tensions between these conflicting normative views by excavating and critically evaluating the political and philosophical assumptions that ground these views of gender relations in sport. I define 'sport feminism' as the normative views and consequent practical strategies that are concerned with interpreting, navigating, and eliminating the unjust restrictions on women's freedom in sporting contexts. I identify and critically evaluate four sport feminist views: liberal, radical, somatic, and post-structuralist. These views are distinct from one another as they differ in their conceptualizations and interpretations of three elements: (1) the nature of gender and the significance of physiological difference; (2) the function of sport and fitness practices; and (3) the ethical grounds and strategies for defining and alleviating gender-based oppression. Drawing from the merits of these views, my project develops a feminist framework for ethical action with regard to unequal gendered power relations in sport.

Abstract:
One of UNESCO's advocacy messages states that ‘lifelong learning for all is the most appropriate philosophy, conceptual framework and organising principle for learning, education and training in the 21st century’. To ensure innovative and resilient employees, companies need to integrate lifelong learning into their operations. Investing in upskilling and reskilling employees across all gender has a potential to close the ever-increasing workforce skills gap in the complex business setting. Actively learning new skills and technologies by employees is mandatory to align with sustainable development goal No 4. Work-based learning is one approach that has increased access to higher education for working adults in many parts of the world. Though still not common in Sub-Saharan Africa, this approach resonates well with the 21st century demands for skilled workforce, innovation and educational resilience. This paper discusses views of Thirty-two (32) Education stakeholders who participated in the Survey on the importance of introducing a work-based learning approach using the distance education mode to upskill industry employees at the University of Eswatini. Survey questions were sent to stakeholders and document analysis on Work-based learning as a means to upskill the workforce in engineering was done. The findings showed that stakeholders embraced work-based learning as an approach to create a skilled workforce but policies have to be in place for effective implementation.

Abstract:
The environment of a knowledge society is dynamic, active, oriented towards innovation. Therefore, the development of skills for the 21st century, such as the fundamental ones, content, and professionals in the Business career, is becoming more critical. Furthermore, the active-cooperative methodologies take more prominence in developing an undergraduate career in business and economics, whose significant increases with the uncertainty, social, and environmental changes that the pandemic is causing.Business education always has the challenge to achieve that student comprehend business dynamics and have the notions of decision-making. Therefore, active learning methods have been used for a long time, especially the case-study method. This research aims to explore the effectiveness of simulation-role playing techniques versus more traditional methods such as lectures. This study analyzes the case of the Business Administration Career at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso, whose program changed in 2009, including the new approach of design courses under the learning-by-doing philosophy, focusing, in particular, in the course Simulación Empresarial (Entrepreneurship simulation). Thus, researching the effectiveness of this type of experience in higher education is a real contribution to the development of knowledge to obtain a quality education. This subject uses active-cooperative learning methods through simulation and role-playing techniques. The students integrate teams that correspond to a firm in the industry. Each one has an executive occupation. The team has to present “yearly results” and stand up to the company board (the professors). Thus, role-playing, simulation, and TICs are essential parts of the course. This paper explores indicators and relationships that allow comparing alumni performance from both curriculums, the one more focused on traditional methods, called Control Group (CG – generations from 2001-2008)), and the ones identified as Experimental Group (EG – generations 2009-2016). Hence, it will provide a methodology to replicate in other Business Schools or other college careers. Previous research shows that the role-playing methodology allows a more significant commitment of the students with the object of study and the development of the activities of the specialty. In this sense, a role-playing methodology complemented with simulation and TICs involves active-cooperative learning, which integrates all the knowledge and behavior obtained during the career. Furthermore, it implies that the student, in order to be able to deliver appropriate arguments that support his/her decisions as a manager. The methodology applied is quantitative research, using regression analysis. Tree-decision analysis complemented these results. Considering that it is an exploratory analysis, it is necessary to choose an indicator for performance. The dependent variable chosen is the Comprehensive Exam grade; this exam assesses all the career subjects in an integrated manner. The independent variables are related to entry conditions, such as a grade average in secondary education, university selection standardized test score, gender. In addition, grades obtained on the different lines of the study plan were calculated, such as finance, marketing, economics, math -statistics, and others. Finally, as a dichotomic variable, whether the student took the course Entrepreneurship Simulation or not, to identify whether he/she belongs to the control or the experimental group. Results obtained from the regression model are consistent with the ones attained using the tree-decision model. The control and experimental groups are very similar, so the different programs do not depend on their characteristics. The Comprehensive Exam grade depends directly, for both groups, from their performance in Economics and Marketing and negatively to whether they took Entrepreneurship Simulation, considering 95% confidence interval. The entry variables or gender makes no difference in the grade obtained in that examination. The univariate analysis outcome determines that the Comprehensive Exam and Entrepreneurship Simulation grades are not related.Consequently, further research is needed to measure the effectiveness of the subject under study. The exam grade may be significantly lower in younger generations because: it is more consistent with traditional methods; after approving Entrepreneurship Simulation, the students may feel that it is just a mere requirement; they specialize more in the course that they used to do in the previous plan; and, the course may develop more soft competencies that the exam does not measure.

Abstract:
The relevance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) for sustainable development is indisputable, especially in the current circumstances of the global pandemic. The pandemic circumstances, as well as the resulting crisis, have caused a change in the way corporations and other organizations achieve their economic, social and environmental goals. Therefore, the role that organizations must play in society, as well as their commitment to broader societal goals, is changing. Corporate social responsibility is becoming an integral part of the corporate philosophy and provides a framework for establishing long-term relationships with key stakeholders which is one of the main prerequisites for the survival and development of organizations. This further implies the growing importance of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility (CSR), which indicates the need for organizations to adopt socially responsible strategies and to balance between profit and the common good in order to survive in the long term. Although the importance of CSR is recognized in various business sectors, socially responsible activities are particularly important for the financial sector, as it is one of the key factors of economic development. The financial sector should be one of the pillars of the CSR development, as well as to define guidelines for other organizations striving to improve socially responsible behavior, through the development of a strategy based on building reputation and commitment to beneficiaries as primary and indispensable parts of successful business. Consequently, CSR in the financial sector is a relevant research area, given the large number of different stakeholders affected by the activities of financial institutions, whether owners, employees or beneficiaries. Despite the large number of studies in the field of corporate social responsibility, a relatively small number of studies deal with the characteristics of corporate social responsibility in financial institutions. This indicates an appropriate research gap that we seek to overcome with this research. The subject of research in this paper is the specifics of corporate social responsibility in the financial sector and the implementation of appropriate socially responsible activities. The aim is to identify how employees in the financial sector perceive corporate social responsibility in general, and in the financial sector of the Republic of Serbia in particular. An empirical research was conducted in financial institutions in the Republic of Serbia, which included 113 employees in banks and insurance companies. We used an adapted questionnaire on corporate social responsibility, which enabled attitudes of employees about the implementation of appropriate socially responsible activities. The results of descriptive statistical analysis showed that employees perceive that financial institutions are generally socially responsible. Actually, the results indicate that banks and insurance companies in the Republic of Serbia recognize CSR as a strategic and legal determinant of business success and strive to raise awareness of its employees about its importance, including it in their policies and practices which is very important because it lays the foundation for building and developing corporate social responsibility. At the same time, the results showed that statistically significant differences in the perceptions of employees are identified regarding gender, level of education and organization's activity, i.e. between employees in banks and insurance companies.

Abstract:
The words of ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tsu make the simplest, yet most profound, case for transformation – a change of direction, a fundamental shift in the nature or character of something, recasting the existing order and ways of doing things. This is what the world needs now, as institutions and systems of the past century prove unable to address the challenges of impending planetary disaster, persistent poverty, pandemics, rising fundamentalism and authoritarianism, wars, and everyday violence. Against a background of a worldwide backlash against women’s rights, gender parity in leadership positions – in legislatures, corporations, or civil society – has proved inadequate, as women in these roles often reproduce dominant patriarchal leadership models or propagate ideologies and policies that do not actually advance equality or universal human rights. What is required is truly transformative, visionary leadership, whereby new paradigms, relationships and structures are constructed on the basis of peace, planetary health, and social and economic justice.
