Abstract:
The article, after providing a general survey of prescriptive theories (or theories on rules) in Hellenistic philosophy, tries to offer a detailed analysis of the moral doxography of Philo of Larissa conserved in Stobaeus' Anthology (Stob. Ecl. II 7, 2, pp. 39-40 W.-H. = 25 Wiśniewski, 2 Mette, 32 Brittain). According to this evidence, Philo divided moral philosophy in three parts : hortatory, or protreptic, topos, therapeutic topos, prescriptive topos –; besides, he parted the prescriptive topos into general and particular logos. This doctrine is contextualised in rhetoric reflection of Hermagorean school and also considered in the light of Academic probabilism. In particular, Carneades' theory of the representations attested by Sextus, M VII 184 is the background against which to evaluate Philo's position.

Abstract:
The ArgumentDespite the enormous historical attention psychoanalysis has attracted, its popularization in Britain (as opposed to the United States) in the wake of the Great War has been largely overlooked. The present paper explores the sources and fate of the sudden “craze” for psychoanalysis after 1918, examining the content of the books through which the doctrine became widely known, along with the roles played by religious interests and the popular press. The percolation of Freudian and related language into everyday English was effectively complete by the 1930s. Crucially, it is argued that in Britain the character of psychoanalytic theory itself demonstrably converged with the psychological needs of the British population in the postwar period. The situation in Britain was clearly different in many respects from that in the United States. This episode bears on numerous questions about scientific popularization, the distinctiveness of British psychoanalysis, and though it is treated here only peripherally the epistemological status or nature of psychoanalysis. More generally the present paper may be read as an exercise in reflexive disciplinary historiography, in which the levels of discipline (“Psychology”) and subject matter (“psychology”) are viewed as interpenetrating and mutually constitutive.

Abstract:
Britain provides universal health coverage free at the point of delivery for its citizens (and most visitors) provided by the National Health Service (NHS). The NHS was established in 1947 in the flush of post-World War II idealism and was planned and structured along contemporary socialist economic and management principles--a large centrally funded and run government monopoly. It is huge, for it employs currently 1.5 million people and it remains one of the last and certainly the largest bastion of such economic thinking and planning in Britain and in Europe. In its 50 years of existence, it has at times provided excellent care for the British nation. But at this point in time, top-heavy with management and administration, chronically underfunded and understaffed, unresponsive to the rapidly changing needs of society and of developing medical technology, it is on the verge of crumbling. Inherent in such a system is the lack of recognition of individuality or of an individual patient’s special needs, and no group of patients feels this more acutely than performers.
