Abstract:
Intercultural philosophy emerged in the 1980s and 1990s in Germany and Austria. It has become widespread throughout the world. Geopolitical changes, which defined the nature of modernity as an era of post-colonialism and globalization, played a decisive role in its emergence. The new philosophic trend has grown from a comparative philosophy that has gone through three stages of evolution: from proving the universal "truth" of Western philosophy, to attempts to create a "synthetic philosophy" and, finally, to the recognition of autonomy and significance of non-Western philosophies. Intercultural philosophy offers a new method of thinking, which involves the rejection of claims to the ultimate truth of the philosophical tradition of its own culture, respect for the heritage of other cultures, the deployment of large-scale discourse so that to find alternative approaches to solving both purely philosophical and global problems.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A hermeneutic analysis of the Oriental Philosophers´ writings is invariably a matter of great challenge and difficulty. It is always full of allegory and literary divagations which intersperse a smooth flow of argumentation. This paper is written by Marklen Konurbaev, Professor of Literature at Moscow State University and his son Salavat, a student of Arabic Philosophy. The paper consists of four parts and attempts to reveal the hidden message of a famous extract from the renowned book Ihya Ulum Al Din by a Persian philosopher Ghazall, Abu Hamid Muhammad Ibn Muhammad Al-TusI, devoted to the analysis of the notion of "fairness" in the doings of a ruler. The hermeneutic analysis was performed based on the methodology propounded by Roland Gerard Barthes — a French literary theorist, philosopher, linguist and critic. This is the first ever attempt to put together the methodological efforts of a Western scholar and profoundly oriental piece of philosophy. Results of the hermeneutic study are stunning and elucidating. The paper could be recommended to the students of literature and philosophy at universities and colleges.

Abstract:
The reform of higher education continues in Ukraine more than a year; however it does not pay much attention to the changes in the teaching of philosophy. In the article the author investigates different technologies of the problem-based teaching of philosophy and its methods, substantiates the necessity of introducing such technologies in the teaching of philosophy and also shows the specifics of the application of such technologies during the teaching of philosophy at the Lviv National Polytechnic University. Any problem-based education is searching and cognition of unknown. It is based on mental, volitional, and emotional activity, but, above all, it requires to be interested in the subject of study. The author stresses that problem-based education can be practiced in small student groups, which have the sufficient level of interest and motivation to study philosophy. Also, the author introduces his own classification of problem solving tasks in teaching of philosophy, which will help to apply educational material in accordance with the level of students, for example: 1) problematic situations that contribute to the formulation of new concepts (they help to generalize all previous knowledge and extract from it a new one); 2) historical and philosophical problematic situations - these are situations based on historical and philosophical material, when students compare the solution of some philosophical problem in the philosophy of a certain epoch, compare the approaches of different philosophers; 3) developmental problematic situations which help students to understand the logic of defining some philosophical concept, to understand one or another philosopher and his methods of creating concepts.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is an attempt to study how the writer-philosopher Ivan Bunin saw the Russian person and Russia itself on the eve and after October, 1917. For this purpose, the author analyzed important features characteristic of a number of works of Bunin's artistic philosophy, which are concentrated in the journalistic essays «The Damned Days», the story «Village» and the autobiographical novel «Life of Arsenyev». In the article, Bunin's method of analysis is compared with the methods of analysis of his contemporaries – Anton Chekhov, Maxim Gorky and Andrei Platonov with Bunin's analysis: the manner of seeing a particular person is compared with the Chekhov's manner of a benevolent sad observer, confident in the inevitable immutability of what is happening, Gorky's sympathetic empathy for the persecuted, combined with an undisguised hatred of the persecutors, as well as a number of writing tools characteristic of Platonov's realistic phantasmagoria. It is shown that Bunin's manner of philosophical and artistic reflection, still poorly studied, allows the reflecting reader not only to see the characteristic human features usually hidden behind external actions, but also to perceive the writer's assessments and deep philosophical meanings reflected in them. Bunin's special writing style is not only a product of literary methodology. It is a unique way of perception and analysis of the surrounding world materialized in philosophical and artistic works, characteristic of a rare social type of artist – an aristocrat who valued honor and nobility above all else in Russian literature and disappeared after October, 1917.

Abstract:
This paper studies the notion of will in Nietzsche’s philosophy. In order to do so, we started this article reading the aphorisms found in the works of the German philosopher that belong to the last two phases of his production: the intermediate and the late stage. At the same time, from the attainment of the speculative notion of will, we try to discuss the results obtained by researches in the area of experimental psychology. The analysis of Nietzsche’s notion of will, as an idea that contradicts free will and its attribute of a constitutive element of morality, indicates the reasons for Nietzsche’s critique of free will. Finally, after the refutation of free will performed by the will as a necessity, the idea of innocence of the becoming as a presupposition for the transvaluation project for all values.

Abstract:
One of the axes of the so called “Lucianic Question” is the relationship of the writer from Samosata with the philosophy, and especially with the Cynicism. Even though the idea of a “Cynic Lucian” or a “Philosopher Lucian” has been abandoned, modern criticism still seems to hesitate before the image of the Cynicism that we find in the pages of this author, which fluctuate in a more or less explicit way between the approval and praise in one hand, and the attack and sarcasm in the other. This article seeks to re-examine this issue in the light of an analysis of the figure of the Cynic Alcidamas, a character that appears in the Symposium or The Lapiths. The hypothesis to be defended here is that the seemingly pitiless construction of this Cynic, the most “buffoon” of the guests in the described banquet, actually reveals the sympathy and admiration that Lucian feels about the tradition of which Diogenes of Sinope was the chief representative.

Bailey, Judith. "Shaping Plato : interpreting Plato's philosophy through his geometry." Thesis, Anglia Ruskin University, 2015. http://arro.anglia.ac.uk/702194/.

Full text
Abstract:
‘Let no one who is not a geometer enter’ was allegedly displayed outside Plato’s Academy and his love of geometry is revealed by the many geometrical references occurring throughout his work. They are often ignored but I demonstrate their importance by showing that Plato’s use of geometry can help to shape our understanding of his philosophy. Although I mention other examples I focus on two geometrical references. I examine Plato’s exploration of apparently diminutive distant objects, whose real size can be found using geometrical calculations, and his employment of diagramma, which implies a diagram associated with theorems. Both are repeated and I track them across several dialogues to analyse, from Plato’s perspective, the validity of the associated philosophical arguments, and the significance of the repetitions. I also use my findings to critique, from a modern viewpoint, some theories of Platonic interpretation. I found that Plato associates distant objects with pleasures, which can also appear deceptively small, and diagramma with the acquisition of eternal and unchanging knowledge. Examining each individual account leaves unresolved issues, but I show that Plato’s repetition of the geometrical examples allows him to continue discussions aimed at philosophers across several dialogues, rectifying omissions and demonstrating the value of writing as a reminder. Analysis of his use of geometry also supports various interpretations of the dialogues, relating to their reception, the role of Socrates, implied references to the Forms, and the spuriousness of the Epinomis. From my examination of Plato’s repetitive use of geometry I deduce that it is incorrect to read each dialogue as an autonomous text. I conclude that the extended discussions have a value for Plato, as he advances his views for the edification of philosophers, and also for us, as we use them to gain insights into aspects of the dialogues beyond those envisaged by Plato.

Kotecha, Shreena. "Meaning and exegesis in the philosophy of St. Augustine." Thesis, University of Bristol, 2007. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.658872.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims instead to look at what a major figure like Augustine, writing about interesting ideas, does with language and meaning in theory and practice. A study of Augustine can show us something interesting about how reader/text interaction works and, more specifically, how a rather influential reader interacts with a text that he believes to be of supreme importance. The questions of the philosophy of language and the language of philosophy tend to be considered in the abstract: I consider them in terms of a particular philosopher. Aqugustine wrote philosophy in a language that is meaningful to us. This thesis examines how and why he manages to do so. Chapter I examines what Augustine said about meaning and exegesis as theoretical concepts. Augustine is, throughout his writings on meaning, concerned with how the meaning of a text relates to belief in a text. This chapter focusses primarily on an early work, De Utilitate Credendi because it directly tackles this question. Chapter 11 addresses the fact that, for Augustine, meaning is far from being purely about language: the meaning of events is just as important and is closely connected to the meaning of words, passages and texts. Chapter III looks at whether what Augustine says regarding the theory of meaning and interpretation is something that he puts into practice when he interprets biblical passages; it focusses on Augustine's Genesis commentaries. The principal conclusion reached is that, when it comes to the study of meaning, purely theoretical work benefits from analysis of complex practice.

Benzi, Nicolo. "Philosophy in verse : competition and Early Greek philosophical thought." Thesis, Durham University, 2016. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11568/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of Archaic and Early Classical philosophical poetry within the competitive context which characterized the poetic production of that period. In particular, I evaluate the ideas and arguments of Xenophanes, Parmenides, Epicharmus and Empedocles in the context of the social and cultural aspects of Archaic poetic performance in order to evaluate their response to traditional agonism. As I argue, these figures entered the poetic contest not only to defeat their poetic adversaries, but also to transform and redefine the terms of the competition itself. Chapter 1 is devoted to the analysis of three institutionalized forms of poetic agonism: sympotic games, rhapsodic contests, and dramatic performances. In chapter 2, I evaluate the socio-political import of Xenophanes' poetry and argue that his conception of the greatest god serves to substantiate his moral prescriptions aimed at eliminating civic conflict. In chapter 3, I examine Parmenides' original notion of alētheia as logical deduction, whereby he provides a solution to the problem of the truth-status of poetry stemming from the Muses' ability to inspire both genuine and false accounts, as narrated in Hesiod's Theogony. Chapter 4 provides an analysis of Empedocles' polemic allusions to his poetic and philosophical predecessors. I argue that Empedocles' confidence in his poetic authority is ultimately grounded on his self-declared divine status, which grants him a unique and comprehensive poetic knowledge. In chapter 5, I evaluate Epicharmus' philosophical fragments against the background of early rhetoric and argue that, through the use of philosophically inspired arguments, Epicharmus aimed to make manifest philosophy's agonistic potential and to show how it could be exploited to one's own advantage.

Abstract:
This paper considers the philosophy of science that is central to Critical Realism (CR). Following a discussion of the foundational transcendental arguments of the movement, it reviews stratification, emergence, and the possibility of a unity between the natural and the social sciences. CR is broadly contrasted with other versions of scientific realism, empiricism, and idealism. the philosophy of psychology is considered as a test case in which critical realism can be demonstrated to be a workable theory of science. Specifically, a theory is propsed of social psychology that would be scientific in virtue of meeting the standards of a critical realist view of science.

Davieau, Nicolas. "Le corps des philosophes : traditions biographiques et construction de la personne du philosophe chez Diogène Laërce." Thesis, Paris 1, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA010629.

Full text
Abstract:
Based on an analysis of the biographical traditions compiled and preserved by Diogenes Laertius, this thesis assesses the significance of anecdotes depicting the body of philosophers in the development of the figure of an ideal philosopher and in these philosopher’ building of their own persona. Whilst ancient philosophers are primarly known to us through texts and doctrinal systems, the insights into their bodily pratcices and their reflections on the subject – diet, physical activity, clothing health – which are reported in ancient biographical testimonies are also worth investigating. This study examines the extent to which and the different ways in which the body can be ssen as the field of practice for the theories and for the philosopher’s relationship to their own mortal body (disease, old age and death). The investigation also provides a pragmatic reading of the work of Diogene Laertius, considered as an author and not merely as a compiler
