Abstract Mysticism as Act. Philosophy and Spirituality in Maurice Blondel Mysticism plays a crucial role at the background of Maurice Blondel’s ‘philosophy of action’ (1893). In the years after his main work, his interest for mysticism increases. The discussion about the role of mysticism is even the battlefield of his debate with Jacques Maritain (1882–1973), who criticizes Blondel of allowing in his philosophy a direct contact with the Divine. Maritain does not accuse Blondel of ‘modernism’, but is very close to it. In order to explain his understanding of mysticism, the article outlines the intensive cooperation between Blondel and Henri Bremond (1865–1933). Blondel was of main influence for Bremond’s text on poetry and prayer in which mysticism plays an important role. At the end of the article the role of this discussion on mysticism and philosophy for Blondel’s social philosophy has been elaborated.

In seinem philosophischen Hauptwerk Masse und Macht suspendiert Elias Canetti die für die abendländische Metaphysik zentrale Differenz von Natur und Kultur, indem er im Anschluss an Friedrich Nietzsche das menschliche Verhältnis zur belebten und unbelebten Natur unter dem Begriff der Verwandlung diskutiert, der den dionysischen Prozess einer psychophysischen Meta- morphose bezeichnet. Die Verwandlung verbindet intensive Affekte, materielle Partikel und die freie Variation dichter Zeichen zu einem symbolischen Gefüge, das einen transversalen Kommunikations- und Austauschprozess zwischen dem menschlichen und animalischen Organismus anstößt. Dieses postanthropozentrische Erkenntnismodell entfaltet Canetti auf Basis einer phänomenologischen Annäherung an psychotische Grenzerfahrungen. Während er das schizoide Erleben intensiver Affektströme als ein paradigmatisches Beispiel für den gewaltfreien Austausch des Menschen mit der Natur betrachtet, erkennt er in den Krankheitsmustern der Paranoia die grundlegenden Strukturen der Macht wieder, die die Verwandlung zugunsten einer instrumentellen Beherrschung der Natur und der sozialen Interaktionen unterbinden. Die Paranoia der Macht ist für Canetti zugleich die Paranoia eines seit Aristoteles tief in der abendländischen Philosophie- und Wissenschaftsgeschichte verankerten Rationalitätskonzepts, das das Menschliche in Abgrenzung zu der es umgebenden Natur zu definieren versucht.

Universalismus und Relativismus sind Begriffe, die vorherrschend zur intensiven Debatte gehören, die sich in der politischen Philosophie und auf dem Gebiet der zeitgenössischen Ethik, Anthropologie und Soziologie entwickelt hat. Ich werde hier eine Neuinterpretation dieser Beziehung versuchen und dabei einige Schlüsselpunkte der Philosophie Diltheys, und im Besonderen einige Stellen aus Das Wesen der Philosophie von 1907 benutzen. Dieser Text und natürlich andere Texte des Philosophen aus dem Rheinland können uns meines Erachtens als philosophische Richtschnur in der Bestimmung und auch in der Neuformulierung von einigen Schlüsselkategorien der postmetaphysischen Moderne, wie Individualität, Universalität, Historizität, Vermittelbarkeit und die möglichst weit reichende Verwendung des Wissens vom Menschen dienen.

Seine Philosophie hat unsere Vorstellungen von Wissenschaft, Moral, Recht und internationaler Politik entscheidend geprägt und prägt sie noch heute. Zugleich aber, das lernt man häufig nicht, ist Kant einer der ersten Philosophen, die sich intensiv darum bemüht haben, Menschen in «Rassen» einzuteilen und zu bestimmen, in welchen geografischen Zonen der Welt sich welche der diversen menschlichen Eigenschaften herausbilden. Er verwendete großen Aufwand darauf, seine «Rassentheorie» gegen Kritiker zu verteidigen, und entwickelte sie über Jahrzehnte hinweg weiter.

The present study analyzed in-service English as an additional language (EAL) teachers’ written teaching philosophy (TP) statements in order to identify the dominant topics that comprise this supporting genre, as well as the use of personal pronouns and possessive adjectives. The sample included 27 in-service EAL teachers’ TPs who were currently teaching, primarily, in the context of higher education and intensive English programs in North American settings. Each sentence was coded for a dominant topic, leading to the creation of 24 categories. To capture the unique characteristics of this genre, we created three success groups (i.e., Most successful, Successful, and Least successful) and compared their contents. Moreover, the first and last five topics for each TP for the three groups were compared, thus, establishing a pattern of opening and closing topics. Finally, we drew on corpus tools to uncover the manipulation of specific lexical features of this genre: the use of personal pronouns and possessive adjectives. The most prominent topics across the three groups included Teaching beliefs, Learning beliefs, Beliefs about learners, and Teacher growth. Differences were identified between the three groups in terms of both topics and organization.
La présente étude a analysé des énoncés écrits de professeurs d’anglais langue additionnelle (ALA) en poste décrivant leur philosophie pédagogique (PP) en vue d’identifier les thèmes dominants qui composent ce genre complémentaire ainsi que l’utilisation de pronoms personnels et d’adjectifs possessifs. L’échantillon portait sur la philosophie pédagogique de 27 professeurs d’ALA en poste présentement actifs, et ce, principalement dans le contexte de l’enseignement supérieur et des programmes d’anglais intensif dans des milieux nord-américains. Chaque phrase a été codifiée en fonction de son thème dominant, ce qui a amené la création de 24 catégories. Afin de saisir les caractéristiques particulières de ce genre, nous avons créé trois catégories de succès (c.-à-d. Succès supérieur, Succès, et Succès inférieur) et en avons comparé les contenus. De plus, les premiers et cinq derniers thèmes des trois groupes portant sur chaque PP ont été comparés, ce qui a permis d’établir un schéma de thèmes d’ouverture et de fermeture. Enfin, nous avons recouru à des outils de corpus textuel pour découvrir la manipulation des caractéristiques linguistiques particulières de ce genre : l’utilisation de pronoms personnels et d’adjectifs possessifs. Les thèmes les plus importants dans les trois groupes étaient les Croyances sur l’enseignement, les Croyances sur l’apprentissage, les Croyances sur les apprenants, et le Perfectionnement professionnel des professeurs. Des différences ont été identifiées entre les trois groupes tant au niveau des thèmes qu’à celui de l’organisation.

Die Philosophie ist eine merkwürdige Disziplin. Sie hat keinen klar bestimmten Gegenstandsbereich und keine einheitliche Methodik. Es gibt aber eine philosophische Methode, die in fast allen Epochen und in fast allen Bereichen der Philosophie intensiv genutzt wurde und weiter genutzt wird: das Gedankenexperiment. Was genau Gedankenexperimente sind, wie sie funktionieren und welchen wissenschaftlichen Wert sie haben, wird in der Philosophie seit den 1990er Jahren intensiv diskutiert. Diese Diskussion ist jedoch stark auf Gedankenexperimente in den Naturwissenschaften und in der theoretischen Philosophie fokussiert, obwohl sie auch in der praktischen Philosophie allgegenwärtig sind. Diesem Phänomen ist der Schwerpunkt „Gedankenexperimente in der praktischen Philosophie“ gewidmet. Diese Einleitung stellt die einzelnen Beiträge des Schwerpunkts vor und diskutiert deren jeweiligen Kontext.

Résumé La sémiotique de l’image, chez Deleuze, s’appuie sur une cinétique du mouvement, qui renouvelle la philosophie et la théorie du cinéma. La matière comporte l’ensemble des images, tandis que la perception ouvre sur ces images une perspective myope, prenant pour cadre l’image particulière d’un corps. Dans cet univers acentré, la subjectivité agit comme cadrage et coupure, interstice entre les images. Une perception se forme quand une image s’individue, et cette individuation se formule dans les termes d’une genèse cinématographique. L’image-mouvement déplie son éventail subjectif d’images-perception, d’images-action et d’images-affection. Ces trois moments matériels correspondent aux catégories du cinéma (sémiotique) et aux moments d’une genèse de la subjectivité (cinétique). L’image-perception soustrait des autres images tout ce qui n’a pas trait à son action ; son cadrage permet à l’image-action de faire pénétrer de l’indétermination dans les autres images en incurvant l’univers autour de son action possible ; enfin, l’image-affection détermine le lien entre les perceptions (images) et les actions (mouvements) de l’arc sensorimoteur. Ces trois moments assurent l’analyse du cinéma classique : les trois types d’images, qui correspondent aux genres de films et aux types de cadrage, sont équivalents. L’image-perception, et son panoramique (western), ne vaut pas mieux que le plan moyen et le montage accéléré de l’image-action (film noir), ni que le gros plan de l’image-affection (cinéma psychologique). Pourtant, l’image-affection, le gros plan, possède la capacité de mener de l’image-mouvement à l’image-temps. La distension de l’arc sensorimoteur ouvre le mouvement, l’action individuée et actuelle, sur leur vibration virtuelle et intensive : l’affect du temps surgit dans la faillite du schème sensorimoteur, et le cinéma nous fait percevoir « un peu de temps à l’état pur » (Proust). Il s’agit d’explorer cette définition de la subjectivité, qui s’appuie sur la technique cinématographique du montage, et renouvelle la question du temps autant que celle du sujet.

Intensive silviculture is practiced in many parts of the world but is rare in the public forests of western Canada. Here, we make the argument that intensive silviculture could be justified in Alberta but has not been implemented due to philosophies and policy decisions by foresters from government, industry and academia. These include adherence to long rotations, management goals that are aimed at sustained total volume yield rather than economic value, limitations in the types of stands that are allowed to be regenerated and models that do not include intensive silviculture options. In Mixedwood Growth Model projections, we demonstrate the potential of intensive silviculture that includes combinations of selecting good sites and thinning to produce merchantable stands by age 50 compared to the standard rotation age of 80 with basic silviculture. There could be even more gains if forest level constraints in timber flow were removed due to the increased growth of regenerating stands. Finally, we examine the attitude and policy changes that we believe are necessary for adoption of more intensive silviculture systems on parts of Alberta’s forest landbase.

L’écoute musicale enfantine envisagée comme expérience esthétique a fait l’objet de peu de travaux de recherche. En lien avec le flux sonore qui caractérise la musique, nous faisons l’hypothèse qu’un éclairage par le processus événementiel de la rencontre permet d’envisager avec pertinence la spécificité des expériences esthétiques des écoutes enfantines. Notre approche propose de s’appuyer sur les concepts simondiens d’individuation et de disparation, deleuzo-guattariens de synthèse disjonctive, de devenir et de ritournelle, créant cet espace philosophique intensif qui permet l’approche des phénomènes que nous investiguons. Dans une visée éducative, nous produisons à partir de traces un exemplier d’événements dont nous relevons des valences d’affect. Ceux-ci ont valeur d’hypothèse et sont, de notre point de vue, affirmatifs de rencontres possibles avec une oeuvre musicaleChildren listening to music, considered as an aesthetic experience, has been the subject of little research work. We hypothesize that examining aesthetic experience through the lens of the process of the encounter enables one to rightly consider the specificities of childrens musical listening experiences characterized by the movement of the sound flow. Simondian concepts of transduction and disparation, Deuleuze & Guattari concepts of disjunctive synthesis, hecceity and refrain create an intense philosophical space that enable us to approach the phenomenon that we are investigating. From traces that appear in different forms, we produce here a set of event examples that refuses the ways of a typology that seems incompatible with the phenomenon of the “Encounter”. This set of examples presents events from which we pick affect valencies. We postulate that they are affirmative of an encounter with a musical artwork. Alors que s’affirme la nécessité vitale de ruptures techniques, économiques et sociales, leurs conditions d’émergence et d’institutionnalisation dans les grandes entreprises demeuraient encore un objet de recherche fondamentale et de nombreuses questions étaient encore ouvertes : quelle ingénierie de conception face à l’innovation intensive ? Quelle organisation mettre en place pour professionnaliser les processus de rupture et les intégrer à l’agenda stratégique ? Quel modèle d’institutionnalisation est compatible avec ce nouveau régime de l’entreprise ? En s’appuyant sur de nombreux travaux étalés sur plus d’une décennie, dans de grandes entreprises de transports publics, cette thèse montre que l’institutionnalisation de l’innovation de rupture se construit et s’analyse selon un modèle à trois dimensions complémentaires : l’industrialisation des méthodes de conception innovante, la métabolisation d’acteurs professionnalisés et la gouvernance de l’innovation intensive. En outre, ce modèle met en lumière le processus d’endogénéisation du pilotage de l’innovation intensive qui est au cœur de cette institutionnalisation. Celui-ci, débute avec la routinisation de dispositifs collaboratifs d’innovation (KCP) sous la forme de « laboratoires/réseaux ». Démontrée de façon répétitive, la puissance générative de ces dispositifs crédibilise de nouveaux domaines innovants, ainsi que les multiples acteurs impliqués. Emerge ensuite une organisation transversale (fonction Innovation Intensive) qui permet de capitaliser sur de nouveaux métabolismes collectifs : l’innovation de rupture s’intègre alors, avec ses repères et ses ressources, dans l’activité quotidienne de l’entreprise. Sur ces bases, une véritable gouvernance « conceptive », adaptée à l’innovation de rupture, est alors rendue possible. Ainsi, l’institutionnalisation de l’innovation de rupture mobilise des formes classiques d’institutionnalisation mais elle s’en éloigne aussi par son couplage nécessaire à la générativité cognitive forte qu’exige la rupture. In fine, ce modèle renvoie d’une certaine manière à l’émergence de l’entreprise moderne elle-même, quand elle a dû institutionnaliser la recherche scientifiqueWhile affirming the vital need for technical, economic and social breaks, their conditions of emergence and institutionalization in large companies still remained an object of fundamental research and many questions were still open : what design engineering to face intensive innovation ? What organization should be put in place to professionalize the disruptive processes and integrate them into the strategic agenda ? What model of institutionalization is compatible with this new regime of the firm ? Based on many works spread over more than a decade, in large public transport companies, this thesis shows that the institutionalization of breakthrough innovation is built and analyzed according to a model with three complementary dimensions : the industrialization of innovative design methods, the metabolization of professionalized actors and the governance of intensive innovation. In addition, this model highlights the endogenous process of piloting intensive innovation that is at the heart of this institutionalization. It begins with the routinisation of collaborative innovation devices (KCP) in the form of "laboratories / networks". Demonstrated in a repetitive way, the generative power of these devices gives credibility to new innovative domains, as well as the multiple actors involved. Then emerges a transversal organization (Innovation Intensive function) that capitalizes on new collective metabolism: breakthrough innovation then integrates, with its benchmarks and resources, into the daily activity of the company. On these bases, a real "design" governance, adapted to breakthrough innovation, is then made possible. Thus, the institutionalization of disruptive innovation mobilizes classic forms of institutionalization, but it also distances itself from it by its necessary coupling to the strong cognitive generativity that the rupture requires. La problématique de notre recherche trouve sa source dans les qualités sensibles des édifices que nous percevons mais ces qualités ne peuvent être attribuées à des concepts et des causes factuelles. Les mots ne peuvent circonscrire le sensible sous le régime de la signification et les concepts sont trop larges pour déterminer l’unicité d’un édifice ou d’un énoncé. Dans le mode majeur de la représentation, la pensée réfléchit des objets et des sujets déjà formés depuis lesquels les attributs sensibles sont signifiés. Mais ce mode majeur de la pensée ne peut saisir l’unicité d’un édifice ou de son énoncé. Cette unicité se réalise dans une occurrence génétique, des dynamiques sensibles et sémiotiques déterminant progressivement les qualités et les énoncés. Notre recherche s’attache à construire une théorie explicitant ces individuations dynamiques Pendant l’individuation d’un édifice, ce sont les variations de puissance sensibles et sémiotiques qui agencent progressivement les énoncés et les contenus sensibles. Toute individuation sollicite un autre mode de la pensée, le mode mineur des affects, qui permet grâce à son opérateur mental, l’intensité, de sentir la variation des puissances sensibles et sémiotiques, le devenir. Une théorie des affects ne peut se construire sans interroger les corps qui s’affectent mutuellement, leurs puissances, et nous obligent à redistribuer les différentes facultés de pensée et de leurs rapports aux passions et aux émotions que la rationalité n’a jamais complètement jugulées. The aim of this research is to build a theory of these individuation dynamics. This process demands that we use another way of thinking, that we call the minor mode of affects. This mode has a mental operator - the Intensity - that allows the perception of how sensible and semiotical powers vary - which is the Destiny. We cannot theorize affects without being aware of how material objects are inter-affected, how powerful they are, and how they make us redistribute our thoughts and their relationships to those passions and emotions that rationality will never halt. Affect, as the adequate idea of what will be Destiny, allows the sense of singularities and of how they put rhythm in the process of an oeuvre, whether it is sensible or theoretical

In the forms , colors , sounds , materials , and in the special case of cinema mode these forces as part of automation mechanism images . In this sense Deleuze gives to the arts by assigning the role to detect the signs , capture them and make them sensitive . Such that we can no longer say about art as a place of production of meanings , but the trial of strength. It is, this field of think of art as material composition forces . Art does not reproduce forms imaginary , but captures materials , concrete strength. The potency of the art resides therefore in different assemblages with the materials that compose . Only then can understand why , in Deleuzian perspective, the film should be seen by the internal relationship images, the way they articulate their threads - plans , movements camera, the relationship between movement and time, etc. , and not by the relationship they establish with real or believable to the production of images. Not indices of realism or rapprochement between the visible world and the ways that we take the film , but at he is able to capture and compose sensitive world.

Abstract. F. R. Ankersmit’s philosophy of history features three distinct categories. Historical research is epistemological. It deals with historical theory and language and logic as they ordinarily are thought of in analytic philosophy. History-writing is the most prominent part of his work and it is explained in terms of representation and aesthetics. Finally, there is historical experience, which could be called the metaphysics of his system. The latter two categories have been Ankersmit’s focus all his career, while the first one is only referred to when establishing how the latter two are distinguished from it.
In this master’s thesis an account is given for how all these categories can be explained in terms of G. W. Leibniz’s theory of substance. While historical research is potentially analogous to Leibniz’s ideas about corporeal substance, Ankersmit expresses little interest in it. Instead, his focus is on the idealistic metaphysics presented in Leibniz’s monadology. In this system the substance is defined as simple, unextended, and complete in the sense that it is an individual, that is utterly independent of outside influence apart from God. On the other hand, substance in the monadology is defined as perception, sometimes conscious, as is the case with souls. This dichotomy is central for Ankersmit’s theory of historical representation as he argues that the main product of historiography, the historical representation, is analogous to Leibniz’s substance. It is an indivisible individual and therefore requires to be thought of as a whole and evaluated in aesthetic terms instead of traditional analysis. On the other hand, with the theory of historical experience the status of the monad as pure experience is central. These two aspects are for him two sides of the same coin that is the basis of his philosophy of history.
Thirdly, just as Leibniz’s discovery of the calculus had a profound effect on his metaphysics, so it is important in the application of Ankersmit’s representational logic. The notion is applied analogically in his explanation of what the historian aims at in writing of history. It also explains how philosophers of history collectively may decide upon which representation of a given topic is best.
I argue that a clear vision about Ankersmit’s Leibnizianism is beneficial if one is to understand the motivations and goals of his philosophy. Just as it was characteristic for Leibniz to appear a conciliator of different sects in the philosophy of his time, so it is Ankersmit’s most important aim to provide philosophy of history an apriorist platform upon which genuine debate based on contesting representations is possible.Tiivistelmä. F. R. Ankersmitin historianfilosofiassa on kolme selkeää osa-aluetta. ”Historiantutkimus” on epistemologista. Siinä keskiössä ovat teoria ja kieli, siten kuin aikamme analyyttinen filosofia näitä asioita lähestyy. “Historiankirjoituksella" hän viittaa historioitsijoiden tekstien representatiiviseen olemukseen. Kokonaistekstejä voi hänen mielestään arvioida vain esteettisin perustein, sillä ne ovat ensisijaisesti representaatioita. ”Historiallinen kokemus” taas käsittelee historian ontologiaa. Kaksi jälkimmäistä käsitettä ovat hänen työssään keskiössä.
Tässä työssä esitän, että kaikki nämä kolme osa-aluetta voidaan ymmärtää G. W. Leibnizin substanssiteorian puitteissa. “Historiantutkimus” voidaan nähdä analogisena Leibnizin ulottuvan (corporeal) substanssin teorian kanssa, vaikkakaan Ankersmit ei tätä vertausta itse tee. Sen sijaan hän soveltaa Leibnizin monadologian idealistista metafysiikkaa. Monadologiassa substanssi on yksinkertainen, jakamaton ja täydellinen yksilö, johon mikään ulkopuolinen ei vaikuta. Toisaalta Leibnizin substanssi tulee määritellyksi myös havaitsemisena, joka voi olla tietoista, kuten on esimerkiksi sielujen laita. Molemmat määritelmät tulevat osaksi Ankersmitin historianfilosofiaa hänen vetäessään analogian Leibnizin substanssin ja oman käsitteensä, historiallisen representaation, välille. Leibniz halusi aikanaan luoda järjestelmän, jonka pohjalta kaikki filosofiset erimielisyydet voitaisiin rationaalisesti ratkaista. Ankersmit pyrkii samanlaiseen sovittelevaan rooliin historianfilosofiassa väittäessään, että hänen järjestelmänsä on aprioristinen perusta, jonka pohjalta erilaiset historialliset näkökulmat voidaan asettaa aitoon vuoropuheluun keskenään.

Comme chirurgienne et intensiviste en milieu hospitalo-universitaire depuis 20 ans et après un travail de"réflexion dans et sur l'action" (dans les mots de Donald Schbn), nous soulevons l'hypothèse selon laquelle les schèmes conceptuels conventionnels et la rationalité scientifique classique, en vigueur en médecine sur spécialisée, bien que nécessaires ne sont plus suffisants à la pratique clinique cohérente, dans une unité de soins intensifs chirurgicaux (SIC). Quelles sont les caractéristiques des processus intellectuels conventionnels? Comment penser autrement? Y a-t-il lieu de modifier notre représentation des processus physiopathologiques des malades critiques et instables aux SIC? Nous faisons d'abord la description de l'organisation stucturo-fonctionnelle des SIC (lieu, acteurs, gestion) et celle de la nature des patients critiques et instables (physiopathologie, pratique clinique, cas-type). Il s'agit d'une analyse situationnelle et de l'étude de cas d'une unité de SIC par une méthodologie de type recherche-action ancrée sur le terrain. Nous rendons compte d'une pratique sur spécialisée qui s'avère de type fragmenté avec une perspective plutôt statique des malades. L'approche analytique de type réductionniste et la vision mécaniste des phénomènes physiopathologiques atteignent leurs limites aux SIC. Nos résultats démontrent que les théories de la complexité (E. Morin, J-L Le Moigne) constituent un paradigme heuristique valide qui permet de dépasser certains obstacles cognitifs (Bachelard) pour mieux saisir la nature dynamique non linéaire et l'interconnexité des phénomènes aux SIC. Ainsi, une approche systémique (Von Bertalanffy, Bunge, Luhmann) de cette complexité intrinsèque constitue un outil conceptuel et opératoire applicable aux SIC. De plus, nous faisons ressortir l'importance de l'approche herméneutique en clinique (Gadamer, Ricoeur) qui permet la dotation de sens et la contextualisation nécessaire à la prise en charge des patients, dans le respect de leur singularité. En termes cliniques et organisationnels, nous suggérons l'idée d'un changement conceptuel intentionnel de la part des acteurs impliqués aux SIC, pour une révision de la représentation des malades critiques et instables, ainsi que l'introduction d'une approche managériale de type systémique adaptée aux conditions de la complexité organisationnelle des SIC.

The thesis examines the theory of intensity and affectivity which is presented in Bergson’s first work, Time and Free Will, in conjunction with the major topics and problems that arise from Bergson’s study of sensibility and mark the transition from his first to his second major work, Matter and Memory. The main problems that are examined comprise the critique of the measurement of sensations, the relationship between intensity and multiplicity, the problem of nuance and degree, the relationship between psychic tension and effort in the experience of freedom and finally the relationship between representative and affective sensation. The thesis aims to provide an account of the transition between TFW and MM through a thorough study of the problem of intensity. This aim is pursued in a twofold direction: the conceptual transformation that led to the genesis of the concept of tension and the emergence of the psycho-physiological problem out of the investigation of the intensity of psychic states.

When faced with a morally intense situation, determining what the right thing to do is easy. Instead, ultimately doing the right thing is a major source of ethical dilemmas for business leaders. This is due to the often-conflicting business interest against the individual s personal values. It therefore follows that a person s courage should play a huge role in assisting business leaders to remain true to their convictions. As such, this study set out to investigate the relationship between an individual s levels of courage and their personal moral philosophy when placed in a morally intense situation.
Using a quasi-experimental approach, this study created a morally intense situation by manipulating Jones (1991) six dimensions of moral intensity. Research participants were requested to experimentally immerse themselves in the case study and to take decisions on various situations posed to them. All participants were then measured on personal levels of courage using Woodard-Pury s (2007) courage scale; and on their personal moral philosophies using Forsyth s (1980) Ethics Positioning Questionnaire (EPQ). The results were statistically analysed to determine if there is a relationship between business leaders levels of courage and their moral philosophies; and the influence that these have when they were placed in a morally intense situation. The participants of this study were 118 first year Masters of Business Administration (MBA) students who occupy on average middle-manager positions within large international corporates in South Africa.
The study found that when faced with ethical dilemmas in the workplace; as presented through the morally intense case study; those business leaders with a relative moral philosophy take decisions in line with their personal moral philosophies. In addition, the study proved that though there is no relationship between courage and personal moral philosophy in a morally intense situation; for those with a relative ideology; the willingness to act might have a moderation effect when an individual is placed in a morally intense situation. This means that the willingness component of courage accounts for some level of the ultimate decision taken. This is particularly positive for business as it indicates that though business leaders do not need to be courageous to do what they believe is right, they have to be willing to act righteously in order for the probability of taking the right action to increase. Son but est d’abord descriptif, vis-à-vis d’une œuvre qui n’a de cesse de désemparer le discours critique. Une première partie s’intéresse aux affirmations existentielles du poète, en abordant la question de la subjectivité et de son éclatement ; une tension entre interrogation de l’humaine condition et tendance à la singularisation radicale y est interrogée. La deuxième partie s’attache à dépeindre la poétique de l’auteur, décelant des parentés de manière aussi bien dans la poésie moderne (Artaud, Dupin, Noël, par exemple) que dans la rhétorique mystique telle que la dépeint Michel de Certeau. Une troisième partie fait contrepoint à la première en étudiant des expériences négatives fondatrices. Abstract Field-X is a large offshore gas structure located 50 nautical miles from Miri City, Malaysia. The reservoir is a High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) carbonate formation with high contaminants i.e., 1.8% mol of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) and 18% mol of Carbon Dioxide (CO2). This paper dwells on the completion design for the high-rate wells planned for this development. Exploration and appraisal wells showed severe reservoir properties that are "unique" as compared to other HPHT developments around the world. A multidisciplinary engineering team including HPHT drilling and completion specialists, production technologists, reservoir engineers, external specialist consultants, and facilities engineers are all working with a One Team One Goal mindset to address the challenges of completing this carbonate reservoir. Some of the completion design challenges addressed in this paper are Annular Pressure Management (APM) systems, perforation strategy for long intervals, well intervention philosophy, compaction and subsidence loading, thermal well interference due to the proximity of the platform well slots, HPHT monobore completion equipment design, qualification, and availability due to a very limited number of suppliers with long lead times. Another critical challenge addressed in this paper is an extensive material selection process to withstand the extremely corrosive well fluids, high temperature, and potential material cracking that historically has led to catastrophic consequences. As a result of the environment, exotic tubular materials are proposed based on intensive laboratory tests and computer simulations. Three-dimensional time history geomechanical and reservoir models explicitly detail the displacement compaction field which the downhole tubulars will be exposed in their lifetimes. Any annular pressure build-up will be handled by an APM system addressing the A, B, and C annuli with a permanent downhole gauge (PDG) installed for pressure and temperature monitoring tubing and annuli. These are some examples of the well design challenges tackled and resolved. The project is currently at the design phase, and all the thought process and design philosophies would be tested in this field. The authors wish that the lessons learned, engineering approaches, and design results will be useful in future sour HPHT completion developments.

Specifically, we want to provide a platform-independent framework to integrate distributed and heterogeneous software resources to support the computationally intensive activities in the product realization process, anchored in the philosophy of decision-based design. In this paper, we present a prototype platform-independent framework based on an experimental version, called P2, of the Sandia Product Realization Environment (PRE). We describe the implementation of this framework to design and prototype gear transmissions using commonly available software assets.

«Aggression» – absorbing all the most destructive things in human activity – is the most important problem of the philosophy and theory of technogenic civilization generated by intensive scientific and technological development. The perspective of the theory of technogenic civilization requires the broadest definition of «aggression». There are three areas of technogenic actualization of the problems of aggression: universal, social, individual. In social terms, special attention is drawn to the transition from a unipolar to a multipolar world, which increases the risks of various disasters and reduces the chances of democracy. On an individual plan, the problems of virtual aggression are becoming more acute and the position of eugenics is becoming stronger. The actualization of the topic of aggression in the theory of technogenic civilization once again emphasizes the need to develop the practice of post-technogenic civilization.

Abstract The fan systems of typical high bypass civil engines encounter strong flow distortions originating in the intake and in the bypass ducts and its bifurcations. These flow distortions cause the fan stage operation point to vary from its design intent, thus reducing the fan stage performance and increasing low engine-order fan blade forcing. A cyclic pattern design for the fan Outlet Guide Vanes (OGV) can be effectively used to recover the fan stage performance and to control its system-level aeromechanical behaviour. This paper presents the development of a OGV pattern design philosophy using numerical experimentation technique. Multiple fan-intake unsteady CFD computations are conducted by clocking the circumferential pressure profile at fan exit to understand its effect on fan rotor efficiency and 1EO fan forced response. The study revealed that a mild, low-harmonic fan back pressure field with a suitable clocking position is able to improve the fan efficiency and reduce the fan forcing simultaneously. Such a pattern can be generated by designing a cyclic OGV pattern that allows the bifurcation potential fields of controlled intensity and phase to pass through the OGV blade row. The notion of deliberately generating a clocked 1EO intra-stage static pressure field by means of cyclic OGV pattern design is termed as the translucent design philosophy. Further, a sensitivity study is performed to assess the effects of simultaneous distortions upstream and downstream of the fan in two flight conditions. The study showed that a correctly clocked intra-stage static pressure field can effectively counter the fan upstream flow distortions and at the same time improve the fan rotor performance and fan system aeromechanical behaviour. The implementation of the proposed translucent design philosophy in a new OGV pattern design tool is discussed.

Abstract Stationary tubular hydrogen storage tanks often consist of parallel connected short pipes. The influence of gaseous hydrogen on the lifetime can be assessed following the German AD 2000 code (2021) for pressure vessels. The AD 2000 code proposes a crack initiation criterion based on S-N curves, which should be considered especially for newly designed storage tanks. Due to the special design of the tanks, the lifetime might be also assessed according to the ASME B31.12 (2019), which is a worldwide standard accepted for hydrogen pipelines. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the lifetime assessment of a hydrogen storage tank with the fracture mechanics-based approach of the ASME B31.12, where the influence of different input parameters (e.g. the initial crack depth and aspect ratio, stress intensity factor solution, fatigue crack growth law) are investigated. The results of the two different design philosophies from AD 2000 and the ASME B31.12 codes are compared and differences in the allowable number of loading cycles for the lifetime prediction of hydrogen storage tanks are discussed.

Back-beveled transition welds for joining unequal wall thickness are often used in gas and oil transmission pipelines, as recommended in the pipeline codes and standards, such as CSA Z662, ASME B31.8, and ASME 31.4. However, one North American pipeline operator has successively utilized a counterbore-tapered design for transition of unequal wall thicknesses for over 30 years. The design philosophy of the counterbore-tapered joint is to reduce the stress concentrations in the heat affected zone, facilitate the welding of unequal wall thickness and NDT while achieving better quality, reliability, and productivity. By conducting a comparative finite element analysis of the two joint designs, the present study evaluated the pressure containment capacities, the stress concentration factors, the stress intensity factors, and the limit loads of plastic collapses for both the counterbore-tapered and the back-beveled designs. The effect of a key design parameter, the counterbore length, on the integrity of the counterbore design was also examined. The results of the comparative analysis showed that compared to the back-beveled joint, when the pipe materials of unequal wall thickness have the same strength, the counterbore-tapered joint has the same pressure containment capacity as the back-beveled joint. The back-bevel design offers lower stress concentration factor, lower stress intensity factor, and higher limit load of plastic collapse than the back-beveled design.

Abstract When in-Service inspection detects flaw in nuclear components, Acceptance Standards of ASME Code Section XI provide allowable flaw sizes to assess the flaw severity and to identify the need for further evaluation. For ferritic vessel welds, the size of allowable planar flaws is given in Table IWB-3510-1. Considering some inconsistencies highlighted in this table, a revision using a robust technical basis is conducted. For that purpose, a methodology is developed following ASME philosophy and including some basic criteria to ensure component safety by preventing plastic collapse and brittle failure. As far as the prevention from plastic collapse is concerned, a uniform limit load reduction is considered whatever the flaw aspect ratios. For the prevention of brittle failure, a reference surface flaw configuration (flaw size, aspect ratio and component thickness) is defined to derive a reference stress intensity factor that should not be exceeded. Then, all the flaw configurations corresponding to this reference stress intensity factor are identified to derive a set of allowable flaw size curves. At last, the most penalizing flaw sizes between both failure modes are retained to define the new allowable flaws. This methodology is applied to surface flaws with various aspect ratios and component thicknesses. It is also coherently applied to subsurface flaws considering the proximity of the flaw to the surface as an additional parameter. Finally, a revision of the allowable planar flaw Table IWB-3510-1 of ASME Code Section XI Acceptance Standards is proposed.

Creativity is one of the important concepts of the theory of journalism. The author does not agree with the extended definition of creativity. He believes that journalistic activity becomes creativity when it is free and associated with the creation and establishment of new national and universal values, with the highest intensity of intellectual and moral strength of the journalist, when journalism is a manifestation of civic position, when this activity combines professional skills and perfect literary form.The author also believes that literary skill and the skill of a journalist are not identical concepts, because literary skill is a component of journalistic skill.
