Full textNegotiations are a frequent part of international business. Parties involved in a negotiation face different problems in reaching a successful outcome. When the parties have different cultural backgrounds the faced problems become more complex.
The study provides for an understanding of the negotiation and influencing factors in head office subsidiary relationship. The relationship is complex since the head office and the regional subsidiaries have different cultural backgrounds. One case study is performed between a global Dutch company and two of their local subsidiaries in Japan and Korea. A framework for the analysis is developed and the factors that influence the negotiation are identified. The data were compiled from interviews from the Dutch side.
The study reveals that the negotiation between the head office and their subsidiaries is complex. Culture is not the only barrier but the cultural awareness becomes critical. Other major influences between the head office and the subsidiaries are the organisation itself, status of the atmosphere and the relationship.

The subjects sustainable development and climate change have become recurrent in our daily life and are no longer specific issues of scientists and researchers. Companies have begun to change many of their processes in order to meet environmental demands made by governments and consumers. Two points of major concern are: the way these goods are produced and the impacts they cause to the environment, society and economy. Based on the theories of Marketing, Consumer Behavior, Social Responsibility, Product Development and Analysis of Environmentally Product Life Cycle, it was possible to determine important issues for which a product is considered environmentally responsible. Understanding these concepts, a case study was made in the company Philips, in Brazil, and its line of products from Lighting Home. The objective of this study was to analyze and evaluate the concepts and practices, and to verify if the fluorescent lamps may or may not be considered green products

Bento, Robson Dantas.

Full textIf the architect Le Corbusier is widely read and thought in its relationship with the machinery , that is, its connection with the mechanical age technology, the Philips Pavilion work (1958 ) - designated as Poème Electronique by Corbusier - appears clearly and objective , the architect of thinking about the means of the electric age . The uniqueness of this electronic and collaborative experience still poorly investigated - which proves the reduced bibliography about the Philips Pavilion - motivated the interest in developing a study on this work in the Masters . We believe that by deploying it in its various aspects - architectural, sound and film - will get an idea of how new technologies may have provided new in the way of thinking and making architecture Le Corbusier.

Full textIntroduction: Simpson’s biplane method is the most used method for determining the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) in echocardiographic examinations. Ejection fraction is a central measurement of the heart's global systolic function. The probe with piezoelectric crystals emits ultrasound waves with a frequency above 20,000 Hz. The sound waves that are sent out into the body are reflected and then return to the probe to create an image. This study compares the two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound Simpson's biplane method with the Philips Heart Model method, which is an automated three-dimensional (3D) function for assessment of LVEF. Material and method: 31 subjects with no recorded heart pathologies between the ages of 21-64 were included in the study. Apical 4- and 2-chamber images were collected from the test subjects, where the Simpson's biplane method was applied to calculate the ejection fraction. 2D apical 4-chamber images were collected to convert to 3D and used to calculate the ejection fraction with the Philips Heart Model. Results: The results of this study showed that there is no significant difference between the Simpson’s biplane method and the Philips Heart Model method for determining ejection fraction. Discussion: The Philips Heart Model method is a relatively new feature that uses artificial intelligence to analyze 3D images. The Philips Heart Model method is a reliable feature to use as most studies have proven similar and reliable measurements when comparing it with other methods for determining LVEF. Conclusion: According to this study, the Philips Heart Model feature provides equivalent measurements in comparison with the manual method Simpson's biplane.

Full textDespite the prevalent consensus on the short to medium-run effects of monetary policy shocks on the real economy and long-run effects on inflation; the relative importance of the channels of monetary transmission mechanism (MTM) still remains open to debate. In this regard, recent findings of the monetary literature and the important developments in the economic and financial structure of the economies on the whole invoke new insights and important questions on the relevancy of monetary policy. The new era of increased openness has also started posing new challenges to the existing monetary transmission mechanism and the policy effects thereof. However, this area has yet not been explored on merit by the researchers, and the existing literature explains only a small part of this globalization –inflation puzzle. Therefore, this thesis aims to make a contribution to this debate. Starting with the analysis of monetary transmission the corresponding channels and the lags we develop a theoretical model to explain the developments and challenges to the monetary policy in the current scenario of increased globalization. The succeeding section deals with the data of a large set of economies, where in the first instance we compute the potential output and subsequently the output gap for the whole sample. Going ahead we conduct panel estimation using Phillips curve equation for our sample to investigate the globalization impacts on the economies on the whole and in parts based on the regional and economic groups

Artificial lighting is considered one of the biggest energy costs in commercial buildings after the air conditioning systems. The design of efficient lighting system contributes to energy sustainability of buildings throughout the building life cycle. Another important aspect of the project is the importance of quality lighting in the health and safety of workers, directly affecting its production. This research aims to analyze what characteristics lead to the quality of artificial lighting design and energy efficiency. The method applied is the embedded case study, having as object of study the Philips head office in Barueri. The form of analysis is to support Brazilian rules and American on the subject, ISO / CIE. 8995-1 (2013) and the Guide ANSI / IES - RP-1-12 (2012) and the certification of LEED and RTQ-C Procel. The analysis carried out at the office Philips demonstrates a balance from the design of interior design, with the colors of the walls in each room designed for their use, but also for better lighting and user productivity.

Full textThe present work has as objective to comprehend fans’ appropriations and reframing (Jenkins, Hills, Jenson) of the character Cthulhu, Howard Phillips Lovecraft’s creation, in the context of cyberculture (Lévy, Manovich, Castells, Santaella). Lovecraft, born in Providence, United States, lived between 1890 and 1937, and wrote short stories and poems on the fantastic genre of literature. His creations survived time, being modified and reinterpreted in different entertainment spheres and, in cyberculture, appropriated by fans in large scale around the world. By the analysis of posts and conversations in the page “Cthulhu”, on Facebook, it was objectified to comprehend who is the fans’ Cthulhu. In addition, it was aimed to investigate what would the differences be between these reframings and Lovecraft’s short story, “The Call of Cthulhu”, in a context where the new media and the Social Network Websites amplify and facilitate content’s production methods and its propagation among the fandom. The methodologies chosen were the documental analysis and the conversation analysis in social media, being done together and later on related with the theoretical approaches chosen. Through the research, the character, before a terrible and irrational monster, gained from the fans personality, human traits, merged with memes and transcended its purpose beyond the original short story – destroying humanity -, becoming a socializing creature.

Since the research was conducted in one region, no firm statements could be made based on this single case study. The framework needs further testing and developing in order to increase the collaboration between the interviewer and the interviewee. Eventually product designers can use the improved evaluation framework as a prospective framework to uncover design opportunities for developmental purposes.

Full textThis PhD thesis proposes, through her three articles, a macro-econometric framework of integrating, in the most adequate way to our sense, the expectations of the economic agents in the reasoning having led to current New-Keynesian models. Upon this specified frame of analysis, we evaluate the effectiveness of various versions of the Phillips curve introduced into the macroeconomic literature. The first study of this thesis takes place in a univariate context and we seek to determine an econometric model leading to best characterize the U.S inflation rate dynamic. In order to achieve this, three types of specifications, associated with three possible evolutions of the expected rate are considered. The first allows an overall instability of the trend or the expected inflation rate. The second considers an alternative specification in which the expected inflation rate is unstable in periodic segments of the sample. Finally, the last specification allows instability of a "mixed type" in which the trend inflation rate is assumed to be random or subject to a probability schema. The results of our study indicate that this last specification is the one that gives the most adequate characterization of the inflation rate dynamic. The inflation rate then appears generated by a second order autoregressive process with, on the one hand, unchanging lag coefficients and, on the other, an unconditional mean which switch between three global regimes of different frequencies of accession. Based on these first results, we extend the analysis in a multivariate framework. The main topics of the second paper are to challenge the rational nature of the agents expectations and the structural effectiveness of the behaviorally micro-based New Keynesian Phillips Curve with a Positive steady state Inflation (NKPC-PI). We then model the trade-off between the U.S inflation rate and a Unit Labor Cost-based measure of the real activity through Markov Switching - Vectorial AutoRegressive (MS-VAR) specifications. These specifications allow to adequately capturing the rationality in the agents expectations process as they underlie a finite number of expected inflation rate regimes, which highlight the agents adaptive beliefs on the achievements of these regimes. Moreover, the results confirm the structural stability of the NKPC-PI over the inflation rate regimes as its deep parameters seem to be unaffected by the regimes switching (Cogley & Sbordone (2005) and Groen & Mumtaz (2008)). In the third study, we extend the analysis of the Phillips curve trade-off. First, we look at determining econometrics models leading to characterize the dynamics of all the variables underlying the trade-off in univariate contexts. As a result, it appears that an adequate way to characterize the agents expectations regarding the dynamics of these variables is to consider a combination of some fixed levels (regimes) in the variables evolutions with an agents adaptive beliefs notion. Finally, based on the implied expectations values of the variables, we show that the Phillips curve seems to disappear when the impact of the expected inflation rate on its current value converges to its long-term value

Full textLike economic integration, multinational firms are a sign of the growing internationalization of the world economy during the last decades. That precisely makes very interesting any historical study of the relation between those two facts. Some very important questions araise from these problematic : for example, are multinationals anticipating, following up or going after such developments in their environment? in order to answer these question (among others), we observed a european multinational facing the coming of economic integration and the realization of the common market. Here, we made a distinction between three different stages : the firm and the idea of integration, the firm facing an european economic community and finally the "integration in the firm". Theoretically, integration should be a good thing for a multinational, but becoming (with the E. E. C) more and more practical for Philips, integration is also appearing as a difficult task inside the firm. Trying to take advantage of the possibilities of a great single european market, Philips' managers are discovering the problems caused by the "market by market" structure of Philips

Full textCardiovascular disease is one of the major causes of death worldwide. A number of heart diseases can be diagnosed through the analysis of cardiac images after quantifying shape and function. However, the application of these deformation quantification algorithms in clinical routine is somewhat held back by the lack of a solid validation. In this thesis, we mainly introduce a fast 3D tagged MR quantification algorithm, as well as a novel pipeline for generating synthetic cardiac US and MR image sequences for validation purposes. The main contributions are described below. First, we proposed a novel 3D extension of the well-known harmonic phase tracking method. The point-wise phase-based optical flow tracking was combined with an anatomical regularization model in order to estimate anatomically coherent myocardial motions. In particular, special efforts were made to ensure a reasonable radial strain estimation by enforcing myocardial incompressibility through the divergence theorem. The proposed HarpAR algorithm was evaluated on both healthy volunteers and patients having different levels of ischemia. On volunteer data, the tracking accuracy was found to be as accurate as the best candidates of a recent benchmark. On patient data, strain dispersion was shown to correlate with the extent of transmural fibrosis. Besides, the ischemic segments were distinguished from healthy ones from the strain curves. Second, we proposed a simulation pipeline for generating realistic synthetic cardiac US, cine and tagged MR sequences from the same virtual subject. Template sequences, a state-of-the-art electro-mechanical (E/M) model and physical simulators were combined in a unified framework for generating image data. In total, we simulated 18 virtual patients (3 healthy, 3 dyssynchrony and 12 ischemia), each with synthetic sequences of 3D cine MR, US and tagged MR. The synthetic images were assessed both qualitatively and quantitatively. They showed realistic image textures similar to real acquisitions. Besides, both the ejection fraction and regional strain values are in agreement with reference values published in the literature. Finally, we showed a preliminary benchmarking study using the synthetic database. We performed a comparison between gHarpAR and another tracking algorithm SparseDemons using the virtual patients. The results showed that SparseDemons outperformed gHarpAR in processing cine MR and US images. Regarding tagged MR, both methods obtained similar accuracies on motion and two strain components (circumferential and longitudinal). However, gHarpAR quantified radial strains more accurately, thanks to the myocardial incompressibility constraint. We conclude that motion quantification solutions can be improved by designing them according to the image characteristics of the modality and that a solid evaluation framework can be a key asset in comparing different algorithmic options
