Full textThe forum of Philippi (Macedonia) which suffered from excavations stretching over too many years is still awaiting a comprehensive study. Though stratigraphical data bearing on the whole of the site are lacking, a detailed description enables us to restore a relative chronology and extend to the whole of the forum the results of absolute chronology botained through limited control excavations. Four successive strates can be singled out: on a badly known hellenistic area, a first set of buildings was erected under Claudius, which was replaced under Marcus Aurelius by another one, somewhat similar in its size but with a different lay-out. After an earthquake, it had to be partially rebuilt ca 500. The plan of the latest changes, just before the site was abandoned (beginning of the seventh century), does not enable us to identify a forum any longer. Owing to an accurate knowledge of its evolution, the forum can be understood in relationship to the topo raphical necessities and the little we know of the urbanism of Philippi can be reinterpreted: a continuous evolution without marked ruptures for the whole of the period can be ascertained. A study of a mosaic and of three unpublished latin inscriptions is given as an appendix

Full textThe lignocellulosic material is a new potential source to produce diesel fuels. However, this material contains significant amounts of oxygen which is necessary to eliminate through a process hydrodeoxygenation that can be achieved during the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of diesel fuels. This represents the advantage of using hydrotreating units available in the refinery. To highlight the complex interactions between sulfur and oxygen molecules, the impact of model oxygenated compounds (guaiacol, phenol, CO, CO2 and decanoic acid) on the conversion of model compounds representative of those sulfur content in diesel (dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (46DMDBT)) was evaluated under HDS operating conditions (340°C, 4 MPa, CoMoP/Al2O3). The transformation of DBT and 46DMDBT requires the two main routes involves in HDS process (direct C-S bond rupture: DSD and hydrogenation of aromatic rings followed by C-S bond rupture:HYD). A negative impact of oxygenates on the HDS of dibenzothiophenes has been showed and corresponds to a competitive adsorption between the sulfur and oxygenated compounds on the catalyst surface. The negative impact depends on the oxygenated and sulfur molecules. Indeed, the inhibition was more significant in the presence of decanoic acid than CO and more especially than guaiacol and phenol. Phenol has a similar effect on both ways (HYD and DSD), in contrast to guaiacol, which leads to a greater inhibition of the HYD pathway. Decanoic acid and CO have a more substantial impact on the direct C-S bonds

Full textDuring the Spanish Golden Century, the image of King Felipe II evolved with "public opinion". Felipe II's death meant representations of the monarch became more stable. They were, however, diverse enough to be deployed to many different subsequent ends. A part of the imagery supported the discourse of royal propaganda, which subsisted after his death. Felipe III's succession to the throne however invalidated absolutist forms of government which henceforth became considered as poorly adapted to the new realities of the Hispanic Monarchy. During this reign, new political practices emerged, following the rise of the Duke de Lerme; decision-making powers started being shared for the first time amongst the King's favourites. It is within this context that the denigration of Felipe II's image was able to flourish. The decline of an absolutist Hispanic monarchy, revealed by the powerful valido, fired conflicting theoretical debates, stoked by nostalgia for royal powers lost. The memorial program established during Felipe II's reign had been aimed at glorifying his image after his death. However, remembrance of the King was not only fostered by older contemporaries but also amongst Spanish scholars, especially following the fall of the Duke de Lerme. In the search to right the keeling ship of royalty and to reconnect with a glorious past, eyes turned once more to Felipe II and the imagery of his reign

Full textFrom the Alhambra to the palace of Fronteira, the azulejo has transcended borders and centuries. Applied on the walls of churches, palaces and patios, ceramic tiles constitute an ornamental art form that reveals esthetic and culture values of a certain time. It is also the expression of a savoir-faire developed by faience makers who were constantly trying to improve the techniques of tile work. Never analyzed in relation to the reign of the Philips, the azulejo and the faience makers have evolved along with the trials and tribulations of an era, where the artistic context was characterized by travels and exchanges. Historical events such as economic crisis and dynastic wars, had conditioned the azulejo in its physical and aesthetic forms. The alliance of the kingdom of Portugal and the kingdom of Castile in 1580, opened up new roads for commercial exchanges while influencing the production of ceramic tile work, as it lead to the renewal of ornamental patterns. The definition of these craftsmen is technically difficult and shows a real imprecision to designate them. Ollero, alfarero, malagueiro, maestro en azulejo, pintor de azulejos, are terms that refer to a creative process where the arts and crafts intersect. The comparative study of the workshops of Lisbon, Talavera de la Reina and Seville was a way to highlight new issues, while bringing together historical, cultural and artistic perspectives that help one to grasp the various aspects of the azulejo
