Shin, Pearl Hae-Jin. "Time and phenomenology of time consciousness." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/13708.

Abstract:
Time, evanescence, and impermanence are basic concepts and have a strong presence in my work. In my photographic works, the outside natural world can be the natural painting itself and I store landscapes in my camera to print out to show as the final artwork. My final project will be a series of landscape photographs which will be focused on the natural environment related to the passage of time. All my photographs were taken in different places around the Sydney region. My photographs will be exhibited as a series of images. The Postgraduate degree exhibition will be held in Sydney College of the Arts on 4th December to 10th December, 2014. This research paper will focus on the concept of time and phenomenology, while outlining the importance of time consciousness. This is closely based on the proposed philosophy of time consciousness and being and time by Edmund Husserl (1859-1938) and Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), respectively. Phenomenology is the study of phenomena as experienced by the individual, and is a discipline of philosophy. Drawing from these ideas, the intention of this research paper is to understand the presence of how photography has been concerned with experience of time according to phenomenology and time consciousness. In Chapter One, the main ideas have been proposed through Husserl’s theory on “temporal horizon” and analysing consciousness as the flow of phenomena to support the paper. Chapter Two will present different artists works and it addresses their individual ideas on phenomenology and time. In Chapter Three, broad philosophical ideas of time relation to base on essay “On Photography” by Susan Sontag (1933-2004). The last chapter will concentrate on my previous artworks and current photograph works to understand relevant ideas on photograph in relation to phenomenology of time consciousness. The findings of this research provide an understanding of how we consciously experience time in our world and give clear ideas of time and phenomenological time consciousness to demonstrate my photographs.

Little, Mark Edward. "A Pavilion for Time." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34107.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose for this thesis, "A Pavilion for Time", is to allow an unhindered exploration of phenomenological time. It is to go beyond, to transcend a convention towards empiricism. The result is an uncritical state, unhindered, uncluttered, a place of pure perception, an existential autoclave. As a phenomenological exploration with architecture as the vehicle, this project investigates time as experienced. It is a heuristic excercise. Its goal is to encourage or rather enhance an understanding of phenomenological time. This thesis does not attempt to answer the question "What is time?" but rather, with architecture, examines the question "How do we, as cognizant human beings, exist with time?"

Asay, Timothy. "The Phenomenology of Frames in Chaucer, Dante and Boccaccio." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/18728.

Full text
Abstract:
When an author produces a frame narrative, she simultaneously makes language both a represented object and a representing agent; when we imagine framed speech, we imagine both the scene its words represent and a mouth that speaks those words. Framed language is thus perfectly mimetic: the words we imagine being spoken within the fictional world are the same we use to effect that fiction's representation. Since its first function is to represent itself, the framed word acts both to push us out of the frame into our own temporality and to draw us into fictional times and spaces. This dissertation explores how first Dante and subsequently his successors, Boccaccio and Chaucer, deploy this structural feature of frames to engage difficult philosophical and theological disputes of their age. In the Divine Comedy, framed language allows Dante to approach the perfect presence of God without transgressing into a spatial conception of the divine. Intensifying Dante's procedure in his House of Fame, Chaucer forecloses the possibility of representation; he transforms every speech act into an image of its utterer rather than its referent, thus violently thrusting us back into the time we pass as we read. Boccaccio--first in his Ameto then in the Decameron--eschews this framed temporality in favor of the temporality of the fetish: while his narratives threaten to dissolve into their basic linguistic matters, the erotic energy of the people that populate those narratives forces them to cohere as fully imagined spaces and times. Finally the Chaucer who writes the Canterbury Tales fuses his initial reading of Dante with Boccaccio's response to it; he constructs the Canterbury pilgrims as grotesques who each open up a limited angle of vision on the time and space they collectively inhabit. These angles overlap and stutter over one another, unsettling the easy assignations of identity any given pilgrim would enforce on a tale or agent within the narrative. In doing so, Chaucer makes the temporality within his Tales strange and poignant in a way that fully mimics our own experience of extra-narrative time.

Beaudreau, Pierre. "Recent contributions to the phenomenology of musical time : a critical survey." Thesis, McGill University, 1989. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=100198.

Full text
Abstract:
The application of phenomenological methods to the analysis of musical time is a recent development in the field of music theory. Phenomenological analyses of music take as their point of departure music as a "heard" phenomenon. This thesis provides a critical survey of the differing ways music theorists have applied phenomenology to the investigation of musical time. After presenting a general overview of the philosophical discipline of phenomenology itself, the thesis considers the work of three theorists, Judy Lochhead, Thomas Clifton, and David Lewin, who adopt a phenomenological approach to issues of time in music. The final chapter considers some approaches to issues of musical time by two theorists, Christopher F. Hasty and Jonathan D. Kramer, who are not explicitly phenomenologists, but whose works are implicitly phenomenological in orientation.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines how gender and temporality are co-constitutive of one another and what temporalities underlie the actuality of gendered life. I weave together the insights of feminist phenomenology and feminist poststructuralism in order to argue that temporality produces and constrains the actuality of lived gender as racialized, heterosexist, and cissexist. More specifically, I argue that this is done through sexual violence. Ultimately, I suggest that the temporality of sexual violence is encrusted into the dominant configurations of gender and into the bodily life of gendered subjects solidifying what gendered subjectivity can become.

Wisniewski, Justin Brandt. "Time, Tense, and Ontology: Prolegomena to the Metaphysics of Tense, the Phenomenology of Temporality, and the Ontology of Time." Scholar Commons, 2018. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7383.

Full text
Abstract:
What does it mean to say that something is “temporal” or that something “exists” in time? What is time? And how should we interpret the “ontology” of time? One important strand in twentieth century thought and the philosophy of time has given these fundamental questions a neat and tidy set of influential answers—according to this view, time itself is understood to be a kind of series, and the basic ontology of time is taken to consist of events, together with either the tenses, which get interpreted as special sorts of second order properties known as “A properties” (i.e. the properties of being either Past, Present, or Future), or with special sorts of second order relations, known as “B relations” (i.e. the relations of “earlier than”, “later than”, or “simultaneous with”) which are typically referred to as tenseless. According to this particular view, taken together, A properties and B relations are understood to exhaust the ontology of time. This is an interpretation that has been typically found throughout much of the philosophical literature on the metaphysics of time throughout the twentieth century despite the fact that both of these prospective temporal ontologies had already been shown early on to face a major problem—McTaggart's paradox (1908). According to the paradox, regardless of whichever ready-made ontology we ultimately opt for, we still are led to the same ineluctable conclusion—that time is unreal. For the better half of the twentieth century, philosophers of time, science, and language have struggled with this paradox in different ways, in various attempts to wrest their own preferred categories of temporal being from its grasp, in order to redeploy them in the course of developing a number of competing metaphysical accounts of time, which get characterized technically, as either “A” or “B” theories of time, depending primarily on whether their respective ontology remains either tensed or tenseless. What has thus emerged over the course of the past century, has been a growing preference among philosophers for interpreting temporal ontology along strictly A theoretical or B Theoretical lines, which has rendered this particular strand of thought a highly influential one with respect to a large portion of our contemporary understanding of temporal ontology, which remains one that ultimately boils down to a choice between A properties or B relations, as evidenced by Broad (1923), Smart (1963), Prior (1970), Mellor (1985), Oaklander and Smith (1994), Inwagen and Zimmerman (1998), Smith and Jokic (2003), Sider (2011), Tallant (2013), etc. Further evidence of this view can also be located not just within both A and B theories of time—which include both tensed and tenseless theories—but also within theories of presentism and eternalism, as well as within recent relationalist and substantivalist accounts of time. In the dissertation, it is argued that a common background assumption within these various accounts of time, perhaps one of the most basic and most wide-spread, turns out to be fallacious. More precisely, an extended argument is developed against the common and basic assumption found within these views that it is appropriate to depict time as consisting of either an A series or a B series in the first place. This metaphysical assumption is referred to as the “SER thesis”. The dissertation aims to show that any such serialized interpretation of time fails to be sufficiently distinguishable from what are merely formalized spatial representations or spatializations of time, and that when viewed from the standpoint of developing a viable metaphysics of time, any such formalized spatializations ultimately appear to result in something like a contradiction. Some objections are then raised to this main line of argument, where it is further shown, that the most intuitive strategies for replying to it are unsuccessful in the end, and serve only to supply us with various ways of masking the real problem, since each of these strategies seem themselves to commit some form of the ignoratio elenchi or red herring fallacies. In the remaining portions of the dissertation, a revisionary approach to the question of temporal ontology that seems capable of avoiding some of these problems is briefly sketched out. This approach employs the resources of a hermeneutic phenomenology of temporality to try and help us get outside of the standard view that is supplied by the A-B tradition and provide us with an alternative starting point. This approach draws heavily from the work of McTaggart's early twentieth century contemporaries Henri Bergson (1889) and Martin Heidegger (1927).

Parker, Daniel S. "Phenomenology of Space and TIme in Rudyard Kipling's Kim: Understanding Identity in the Chronotope." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2012. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/english_theses/132.

Abstract:
This thesis intends to investigate the ways in which the changing perceptions of landscape during the nineteenth century play out in Kipling’s treatment of Kim’s phenomenological and epistemological questions of identity by examining the indelible influence of space— geopolitical, narrative, and imaginative—on Kim’s identity. By interrogating the extent to which maps encode certain ideological assumptions, I will assess the problematic issues of Kim’s multi-faceted identity through an exploration of both geographical and narrative landscapes and the various chronotopes—Bakhtin’s term for coexisting frameworks of time and space—that ultimately provide a new reading of identity-formation in Kim.

Thompson, Julia. "A Sense of Time, A Sense of Self: The 'Lived Perspective' of the Walk." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32508.

Full text
Abstract:
Much of the walking that we do in our daily lives is dull, but sometimes, unexpectedly, it can be revelatory. During these moments, through what phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty calls the â lived perspectiveâ of walking, we experience a merging of our inner and outer worlds and achieve greater self-awareness. Although most of our experience in the landscape is through movement, we rarely design for such spaces. Using the hypothesis that terrorist threats and an aging infrastructure may lead to the rerouting of the CSX Railway south of Washington, D.C., shutting down the existing line, I propose to convert the CSX Railway bridge that crosses the Anacostia River in Southeast Washington to an open public space. While other portions of the track may be demolished and returned to the wide avenues envisioned by Lâ Enfant or renovated as trolley tracks, the CSX bridge could be renovated to provide a link between the neighborhood of Capitol Hill and the Anacostia River through a pedestrian walkway. The methodology I use to explore this thesis is two-fold. I study several environments, from site-specific artworks to monuments to large urban parks. I also study fields that explore the experiential nature of perception such as art and philosophy, and use the freedom of expression that drawing allows as a tool to inform the design of spaces that can enable us to experience a state in which our mind, body, and vision are intertwined.

Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú - Departamento de Humanidades, 2014. http://repositorio.pucp.edu.pe/index/handle/123456789/112775.

Abstract:
Husserlian phenomenology of time, as it is developed on theLectures on the Phenomenology of Inner Time Consciousness, shows some  difficulties  to  explain  certain  temporal  experiences.  This  is  the  case  of the incompatibility between the rigidity of the retentional modification and the effective approach that a subject may have with his memories. On the one hand, according to the Lectures’ explanation, the darkening of the past occurs in an homogeneous way: The more distant an experience is, the lower the clarity of the associated retention. However, our relation with the past is not so direct. Complementing the studies of the Lectureswith those of the Analysis concerning passive synthesiscould allow to explain this kind of temporal phenomena.

Abstract:
This essay aims to shed light upon the philosophical dignity of Edith Stein’s critique of the early Heideggerian conception of sociality in her text ”Martin Heideggers Existenzphilosophie”, from 1936. I will argue that Stein’s critique of Heidegger’s concept of sociality comes to be substantiated through her existential-philosophical approach to his understanding of the transcendent character of Dasein. By objecting to Heidegger’s definition of Dasein as ecstatic temporality, Stein points out his inattentiveness to authentic otherness in Being and Time, which reaches out into a problem surrounding Mitsein. I will further demonstrate how Stein, by ascribing to Dasein an enduring and sustaining quality in the midst of ecstasy, uses Heidegger’s concept of Dasein in order to formulate her own social ontology.

Sarah, Jamieson. "Building and Mobilizing Social Capital: A Phenomenological Study of Part-Time Pofessors." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/35133.

Full text
Abstract:
Social connections are the main determinant of a person’s quality and quantity of resources. A person uses social connections to access or use resources; the stronger and more extensive the social network, the greater the resources (i.e. social capital). Connections in social networks allow us to access and use social capital to achieve instrumental or expressive goals. Conversely, a lack of connection is central to many challenges in building social capital. Therefore, social connection is a beneficial concept to examine for those at risk of inadequate social capital. This research explores the experiences of part-time professors and their peer connections at the University of Ottawa. It discusses whether a lack of connection exists and how it may affect the social capital of part-time professors. Twelve part-time faculty members were purposively sampled and interviewed about their experience of being a part-time teacher at the University. One participant asked to be removed from the study. Participants were chosen on the basis that they had worked as a part-time teacher at the institution for five years or fewer. Using Moustakas’ (1994) phenomenological approach for collecting and analyzing data and Creswell’s (2007) approach for establishing validity, several thematic patterns were exhibited among part-time professors in relation to social capital and the barriers that they face. In conclusion, inadequate social capital among part-time professors may have problematic implications for students, the department, and the University as a whole.

Abstract:
In recent years, philosophy of history has somewhat outgrown the two fields of interests often prescribed to that branch of philosophy: historiosophy and historics. Ordinarily, this outgrowth is inspired by efforts to reflect new forms of historiography (such as microhistory or history of daily life). However, such a move is also employed in attempting to explain non-professional, pre-theoretical or even pre-thematic relation to historical past. A daily historical consciousness – a notion that has became possible only in the latest philosophy of history – is investigated here as a phenomenon of tradition. As is the case with all concepts, sense of the concept of tradition is flexible, given its history, development and future tendencies. In view of the usage of the word “tradition” in contemporary practical and theoretical contexts, it is clear that this concept enjoys few open means of further development. It can be radicalized, i.e., made into a fetish or almost into a slogan; on the contrary, it can be demonized. It can also be seen as the name of a phenomenon experienced in all lives, irrespective of the time and culture in which they are lived. Of course, levels and intensities of these experiences are different. In all senses, the term tradition denotes a human way to understand a social dimension of time, and to act in that time. From the philosophical point of view, tradition is an aspect of the intersubjectivity of consciousness, and as such possesses its own... [to full text]
Pirmojoje bei antrojoje disertacijos dalyse parodoma tradicijos sąvokos raida istorijos filosofijos kontekste bei paaiškinamos prielaidos tradicijos kaip filosofinės problemos atsiradimui naratologijoje bei fenomenologijoje. Trečiojoje dalyje, remiantis abiejų krypčių teiginiais bei konceptais, ištiriami svarbiausi tradicijos kaip istorinio laiko patirties struktūriniai aspektai. Paskutinėje disertacijos dalyje analizuojamos tradicijos temos plėtojimo praktiniuose ir teoriniuose... [toliau žr. visą tekstą]

Abstract:
This essay tries to investigate the possibility to reconstruct the concept of mimesis in Martin Heidegger’s hermeneutical phenomenology in Sein und Zeit. Paul Ricoeur’s interpretation of the concept of mimesis in Aristotle’s Poetics, develops a new temporal understanding of the mimetic activity, which Ricoeur in his work Time and Narrative, claims to have the possibility to overcome the aporias in the phenomenology of time. With this criticism as the background context for the present study, seeks this essay to pick up Ricoeur’s new conception of mimesis, and use that in a comparative philosophical reflection on the basic concepts in Heidegger’s Sein und Zeit. The main thesis in this essay is that Ricoeur’s concept of mimesis can be rethought and reconstructed as a possibility within Heidegger’s thinking.

Egberg, Thyme Karin. "What do you see? : studies on time-limited psychodynamic art psychotherapy." Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Onkologi, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-1684.

Full text
Abstract:
The main purpose of this thesis is to explore experiences of two different psychological interventions based on art psychotherapy in women with a psychological or physical illness. The two interventions are art psychotherapy and art therapy. The difference between these two interventions is that the art therapist works with the transference in art psychotherapy but not in art therapy. The thesis consists of two studies of art psychotherapy: An art psychotherapy intervention is evaluated in Study 1 (papers III and V) which examines a group of patients diagnosed with depression and Study 2 (paper II) which examines experiences in a group of six patients diagnosed with vulva vestibulitis. An art therapy intervention is evaluated in the third study (papers I and IV); where experiences in patients diagnosed with breast cancer are examined. In Study 1, forty-three (n=43) depressed women were randomly assigned to either an intervention group or a control group (verbal psychotherapy). The aim was to examine the outcome of time limited psychodynamic art therapy compared to time-limited psychodynamic verbal therapy for patients with depressive symptoms. Interviews were performed before, immediately after, and three months after the termination of psychotherapy, and self-rating scales which focus on stress reactions, depression and symptoms as well as an observer rating scale on depression were used. The interviews and the art sessions were video-recorded, and the verbal psychotherapy was tape-recorded. The results showed that the art and verbal psychotherapies were comparable. The conclusion was that short-term psychodynamic art psychotherapy could be a valuable treatment for depressed women. In an in-depth content analysis, the method of scribbling was further investigated and exemplified with the therapies of two participants. In this study, the patients’ pictures and verbal expressions of progress, along with considerations of how to interpret the pictures were in focus. When leaving therapy the two patients took advantage of the paper, made complete forms, symbolised in words what they have expressed in pictures; in pace with psychotherapy the themes alter towards separation, individuation, and attempt to relate in a new way. The conclusion was that limelimited psychodynamic art therapy suggests giving a safer place for the self as the cohesion is firmer with better boundaries. Study 2 is a pilot study, which involved six young patients newly diagnosed with vulva vestibulitis. The aim of the study was to investigate pain at vestibulum, mental health, and self-image after fifteen sessions of art psychotherapy. Five of the patients were judged to have less pain three months after termination of therapy. The conclusion was that art psychotherapy with its openness seemed to affect young women in their experiences of vulva vestibulitis in a positive direction. Study 3 examined the potential benefit of art therapy for women with primary breast cancer. The sample comprised forty-one (n=41) patients who were randomly assigned either to an art therapy group or to a control group. The art therapy was going on during five weeks radiation treatment, one session per week. The aim was to investigate the outcome of art therapy, to quantify and compare the participant coping s, self-image, and the symptoms with the participant in the control group. Interviews were performed before, immediately after, and six month after inclusion. A set of self-rating scales was used: Coping Resources Inventory, the Structural Analysis of Social Behavior, and Symptom Check List – 90. The result showed that the patients in the art therapy group rated their coping s and especially their social s, higher than the control group, and that the average patients in the art therapy group improved in depressive symptoms and symptoms of anxiety, and that the general psychiatric symptoms improved as well. A linear regression analysis showed a tendency that the coping s increased in the art therapy group and decreased in the control group or even stagnated in the social domain. A second report on self-image, symptoms, treatment, and social variables showed that art therapy was related to lower ratings of depression, anxiety, and general symptoms after treatment; chemotherapeutic treatment predicted lower depressive symptoms and general symptoms in contrast to axilliary surgery and hormonal treatment. The results showed that art therapy could be valuable complementary therapy in routine oncology practise. The conclusion is that art therapy can have a positive long-term effect on the crisis following the primary breast cancer and its consequences. Conclusion: The results show that time-limited psychodynamic art psychotherapy is valuable for depressed women; that it is a valuable complement for women with vulva vestibulitis; and that art therapy is a valuable complement in the care and cure of women with primary breast cancer.

Abstract:
Background: Breastfeeding is globally recognised as a gold standard of nutrition, recommended for the first six months of an infant’s life. Despite its benefits, most women in Ghana do not breastfeed, as recommended by World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF). Aim: To gain in-depth understanding of first-time Ghanaian mother lived experience of breastfeeding. Design/Method: A longitudinal qualitative design was adopted, underpinned by the hermeneutic phenomenological approach, as described by van Manen (1990). The study explored the lived experiences of thirty first-time women recruited from antenatal clinic. A series of three semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted; the first in late pregnancy, the second in the first week following childbirth and the final one between four and six months postpartum. Findings: Inductive thematic analysis informed by van Manen (1990) and principles of hermeneutic interpretation allowed the emergence of four main themes: the ‘Breastfeeding Assumption,' Breastfeeding as Women’s Business,’ the Postnatal Experience of Breastfeeding and ‘Family as Enabler or Disabler’. Within the context of this study, breastfeeding is expressed as an activity within the family and social environment. The overall phenomenon that emerged was ‘Social Conformity’. This demonstrates an understanding of the breastfeeding experience suffused with emotions as women project an image of themselves as successful breast feeders in order to conform to family and social expectations. Conclusion: Findings from the study demonstrated the multifactorial dimensions of breastfeeding. Most importantly, it was identified that first-time breastfeeding women use emotion work to cope with their experience of breastfeeding, within the social context. It was suggested that midwives play a pivotal role in helping women develop realistic expectations prior to breastfeeding. Furthermore encouraging family centered education that promotes holistic support for women. The findings therefore suggested the need for better antenatal education based on evidence-based practice. Breastfeeding women require individualised support that assesses their emotional needs and offers encouragement. Developing policies that ensure training of midwives and breastfeeding advocates was recommended. Future research could explore the impact of these interventions on breastfeeding practices, helping first time women to breastfeed effectively.

Abstract:
This paper presents a reflection on the memory of the compositional process and an analysis of the characteristics apprehended from composer’s consciousness, through the music. The compositions, which are the main object of reflection in this memorial, had the concept of shadow as its aesthetic premise, which inspired the decision-making. The fundamental procedure for the preparation of compositions, it constitutes from the action, which is taken as a starting point for characterizing the composition and the musical identity, mainly related to performance. The analysis is supported by Phenomenology of Music, from authors like Schutz (1976) and Clifton (1976), and is focused on temporalities found in music, using the Kramer (1988) propositions about the kinds of time (Linear Time and Nonlinear Time). These kinds are related to ideal objects of autoress’ thought, especially those originated in musical experiences. Images and sonorities are members of a frame of reference that groups the memory contents. Thus, sonorities, memories and actions are taken as aspects that constitute the musical and compositional phenomenon.

The lecture entitled The Concept of Time was delivered by Heidegger to theologians in 1924 in Marburg. In this dissertation, this conference is read as a closing of the courses and studies that preceded it and not, as is usually done, as an intermediate state for the formulation of Being and time. In it the philosopher intended to question the time from the original experience of Dasein‘s factual life instead of taking it as something to be investigated objectively. Thus, the question ―what is time?‖ was modified into ―who is the time?‖. This leads to interrogating phenomenologically Dasein as the being in question, when it comes to its original experience. Time is also a condition of possibility for other experiences, among them the religious one. That is, religious experience is originally temporal, religion is historical. In this sense, the 1924 conference sheds light on the historicity of religion and how is possible to investigate it phenomenologically. Thus, Dasein is the being in question as a researcher of religion and the one questioned in the original religious experience; Both constitutively historical.

Abstract:
Insulin pumps are designed for the self-management of diabetes mellitus in patients and are known for their complexity of use. Pump manufacturers engage trainers to teach patients how to use the devices correctly to control the symptoms of their disease. Usability research related to insulin pumps and other infusion pumps with first-time users as participants has centered on the relationship between user interface design and the effectiveness of task completion. According to prior research, the characteristics of system behavior in a real life environment remain elusive. A suitable approach to acquire information about potential usability problems encountered by first-time users is to obtain this information from the health care professionals who train them. The purpose of the study was to discover the lived experiences and shared impressions of insulin pump trainers during training sessions with first-time users. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to uncover the phenomena associated with usability challenges that first-time users of insulin pumps face when learning to use the device. Six participants representing a homogeneous sample were recruited from a wide geographic area in the United States, and semi-structured interviews containing open-ended questions were conducted with the respondents. The data from the lived experiences and shared impressions of the participants were used to develop the following five super-ordinate themes: Emotion-charged Environment, Personalized Training, Safety Issues and Disaster Planning, Professional Dedication, and The Voice. The essence of participants’ experience was described around the pivotal moment when the training sessions are successfully completed and insulin pump therapy becomes alive. The findings of this study have implications for information systems professionals who conduct research on the safe design and usability of safety critical medical devices. In addition, the findings from this study create opportunities for practice to improve the initiation of insulin pump therapy in patients with diabetes.

Abstract:
This thesis articulates a novel interpretation of Heidegger’s explication of the being (Seins) of gear (Zeugs) in §15 of his masterwork Being and Time (1927/2006) and develops and applies the position attributed to Heidegger to explain three phenomena of unreflective action discussed in recent literature and articulate a partial Heideggerian ecological metaphysics. Since §15 of BT explicates the being of gear, Part 1 expounds Heidegger’s concept of the ‘being’ (Seins) of beings (Seienden) and two issues raised in the ‘preliminary methodological remark’ in §15 of BT regarding explicating being. §1.1 interprets the being (Sein) or synonymously constitution of being (Seinsverfassung) of a being (Seienden) as a regional essence: a property unifying a region (Region), district (Bezirk), or subject-area (Sachgebiet) – a highly general (‘regional’) class of entities. Although Heidegger posits two components of the being of a being, viz. material-content (Sachhaltigkeit, Sachgehalt) and mode-of-being (Seinsart) or way-of-being (Seinsweise, Weise des Seins, Weise zu sein) (1927/1975, 321), the unclarity of this distinction means that it does not figure prominently herein. §1.2 addresses Heidegger’s distinction between ontological and ontic investigations and his notion of ‘modes of access’ (Zugangsarten, Zugangsweisen). Part 2 expounds §15 of BT’s explication of the being of gear. §2.1 analyses Heidegger’s two necessary and sufficient conditions for being gear and three core basic concepts (Grundbegriffe) enabling comprehension of these conditions and therewith a foundational comprehension of gear. Heidegger explicates the being of gear through content of unreflectively purposeful, non-intersubjective intentional states. I term such states ‘mundane concern’, which is almost synonymous with Hubert Dreyfus’s term ‘absorbed coping’ (1991, 69). Heidegger’s explication highlights around-for references (Um-zu-Verweisungen) as the peculiar species of property figuring in mundanely concernful intentional content. §2.2 clarifies Heidegger’s position on the relationship between to-hand-ness (Zuhandenheit) and extantness (Vorhandenheit) in the narrow sense: two of Heidegger’s most widely discussed concepts. I reject Kris McDaniel’s recent reading of Heidegger as affirming that nothing could be both to-hand and extant simultaneously (McDaniel 2012). Part 3 develops and applies Heidegger’s phenomenology of mundane concern. §3.1 explains the phenomena of situational holism, situated normativity, and mundanely concernful prospective control. §3.2 undertakes the metaphysical accommodation of around-for references, which §3.1 posited as featuring prominently within mundanely concernful intentional content. This thesis thus contributes not only to Heidegger scholarship, but also to contemporary debates within the philosophy of action and cognitive science.

Phenomenological philosophy becomes a possibility to reveal the depths of Nijole Miliauskaite’s poetry, to have a new and essential look at her creation’s sensuality, subjectivity, coalescence of different qualities, intensive intentional relations. N. Miliauskaite’s creation was studied by many lithuanian literature reviewers, but still it did not receive more comprehensive phenomenological view. For analysis were chosen all poetess verse collections: „Uršulės S. portretas” (“A Portret of Uršule S.”) (1985), „Namai, kuriuose negyvensim“ (“A House Where We will not Live”) (1988), „Uždraustas įeiti kambarys“ (“The Forbidden Entrance Room”) (1995), „Širdies labirintas“ (“The Labyrinth of Heart”) (1999) and N. Miliauskaite’s letters to Marijampole boarding-school ex-teacher of literature Liuda Viliūnienė. In this master’s work the most characteristic texts which recruit poetess creation phenomenon are described. There is studied the openness of creative consciousness to different ways of imagination – dreams, fantasies, wishes, tales, the importance of this imaginary reality to a speaker, its poetical phenomenological specific. There is described a meeting with things, through things, in things, which expand lyrical subject’s experience possibilities. Also there is analyzed importance of moving phenomenon in N. Kandler, Renate. "Roses of Love, Violets of Humility and Lilies of Suffering: A Phenomenological Hermeneutic Study of Floral Experiences in the Diary of St. Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938)." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/26128.

Abstract:
The presence of flowers is felt in Catholic architecture, literature, artwork, personal histories and devotional practices. This, however, has not always been the case. The Catholic Church has had a long and tumultuous relationship with flowers, the focus of which has been the subject of considerable scholarship (e.g. Fisher (2011, 2007), Ward (1999), Winston-Allen (1997), Goody (1993), Coats (1970)). What has not been much considered is a phenomenological treatment of Catholic floral experience, and how such experiences have shaped individual and shared understandings of the Catholic faith. This thesis seeks to redress this omission through an exploration of the life of the Polish Catholic mystic, St. Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938), whose mystical experiences with the divine were explicitly mediated and narrated through flowers. Through Faustina’s diary, Divine Mercy in my Soul, we gain access to powerful, and unequivocally Catholic, experiences with flowers which comprise the very centre of her religious convictions. This thesis queries the ways in which flowers have dynamically shaped, and have been shaped by, St. Faustina's relationship with God and Catholic holy figures. To address this question I use the semiotic, phenomenological and hermeneutic approach of Max van Manen. Van Manen uses four elements of lived experience he calls lifeworld existentials, these are: lived space, lived time, lived body and lived relationality. These four categories are applied to St. Faustina’s life as she engages with God spatially, temporally, corporeally and relationally; each reveals the centrality of flowers in her religious experiences. While this thesis focuses on the religio-floral experiences of a particular mystic-saint, its significance lies also in the broader Catholic narrative of which it is a part. Writing about flowers was a transformative medium in Faustina's life and has been historically significant in the lives of many other Catholic saints and mystics who recorded similar experiences. This thesis, in describing the details of St. Faustina’s floral-saturated experiences from her diary, reveals a particularized instance of a paradigmatic Catholic phenomenon whereby flowers provide access to the sacred.

Abstract:
We are able to perceive temporally structured events, like change, motion and persistence. These events do have temporal properties like duration, temporal order and simultaneity. In addition, many philosophers hold that, contrary to space, these temporal properties do not exhaust our temporal experience. Time itself, they hold, is felt as enjoying a transient character over and above these relations. Our awareness of temporal properties and the alleged flowing character of time are the object of analysis of this dissertation. Many philosophical problems and issues arise in this respect, among which the Paradox of Temporal Experience, the requirement of accommodating temporal transparency and the troubles for the B-Theory because of the so-called "Argument from Phenomenology". In addressing all of them, I will propose a full-blown tenseless account of temporal perception, implemented via retentionalism. It is a completely new proposal, since the received view runs against this very hypothesis, especially if the latter is accompanied by a naive realist conception of experience. In other words, I will show that no reference to any temporal location is within our perceptual contents. Moreover, In respect of the idea of a perceived flow, I will propose that this relies on a mistake. There is nothing like the perception of time passage. Finally, It is worth to point out that, within the overall field of philosophy of perception, our ability to perceive time is an unicum. While it is often said that our acts of perception do not share the properties of the perceived objects, it is still the case that temporal perception occurs in time. This is very interesting because temporal properties of perception come to have a role at explaining our ability to be acquainted with temporal properties in the environment. Finally, temporal perception has a lot of connections with other inquiries such metaphysics and cognitive science which will be explored in various extent.

The primary purposes of this study were to identify motivational typologies of growth and stability and identify people who have crossed a boundary in terms of levels of hope and time perspective. This study draws upon two fields, philosophy and psychology. The philosophical framework traces its roots back to American pragmatism and Alfred North Whitehead’s Process Philosophy. The second set of theories proposed for investigation came from the relatively recent empirical endeavor known as positive psychology. Specifically, I tested the construct validity and predictive utility of hope and time perspective as predictors of academic time management and academic outcomes in a Japanese sample. The participants were 467 students attending one of the largest private universities in Japan. Several instruments were used to measure the relationship between hope and time perspective as independent variables and self-reported academic outcomes. The instruments were the Hope Disposition Survey, the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, self-reported TOEIC and GPA scores, and the Vocabulary Size Test. The research design was a quantitative and qualitative mixed-methods research plan. Two relatively recent constructs from the area of positive psychology research known as hope theory (a goal-oriented construct) and the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory were utilized for empirical investigation. The use of a mixed-method research design allowed this study to add to our knowledge of the roles of hope and time management in goal directed behavior. The analytical tools included the Rasch model, confirmatory factor analyses (CFA), structural equation modeling (SEM), and latent growth curve modeling (LGM). The qualitative analysis was a phenomenological investigation (similar to a case study) into the relationship between affect, cognition, and motivation utilizing a Process Philosophy framework. Results of the Rasch and CFA indicated that hope and time perspective were viable constructs for this sample. The hope SEM results indicated that hope had a positive relationship with academic outcomes as hypothesized. The time perspective SEM indicated that future time perspective had a positive relationship and that present-hedonism had a negative relationship with academic behavior as hypothesized. LGM results indicated that study time management had a non-linear relationship with the academic calendar. Both sets of results must be considered with caution due to a design flaw in the data collection instruments and high levels of attrition for the LGMs. Finally, the interview results indicated that students in the sample were extrinsically motivated by situational variables such as professor signals of how to, how much, when to, and what to study and that transitions from secondary to tertiary level studies were difficult for students with low levels of hope. The results were interpreted to suggest that levels of student engagement in the sample were at a less than desirable level when compared to OECD or North American university expectations. However, results were considered to be generally supportive of hope and time perspective theory.

Mason, Mark Daniel. "A Phenomenological Study of Professional Identity Change in Released-time Seminary Teachers." DigitalCommons@USU, 2012. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/1289.

Full text
Abstract:
Many practitioners commonly deal with implementing a change that is imposed by an organization. Some imposed changes require practitioners to alter more than what they do in practice but also to change their identity. Many researchers have studied identity change through the lens of sociocultural theory, specifically utilizing communities of practice theory (CoP). However, the majority of these studies used CoP theory as a vehicle to implement the imposed change. Yet some studies have found that after the trial period ends many practitioners revert back to the way they performed in practice prior to the study. One reason for this problem could be that the nature of the change experience that practitioners must undergo is not understood. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to reveal the nature of the change experience of six released-time seminary teachers in response to the adoption of the teaching and learning emphasis (TLE) within the Seminaries and Institutes of Religion (S&I) for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Specifically, the research question was "What is the nature and meaning of the change experience of a sample of released-time seminary teachers who are considered to be effective at learning to understand and implement TLE"? Researching S&I teachers' change experience is important because it may relate not only to the needs of the S&I organization, but also in a broader sense to the nature of the experience of practitioners who undergo an imposed change by the organization for which they work that alters their professional identity. Three central themes were found that represented the nature of the change experience for the sample group. The themes were represented as transformational, sociocultural, and self-reflective change. Each participant's experience varied in the particular details of his individual change experience. Nevertheless, all participants experienced some degree or kind of transformational change within their particular configuration of knowledge, character, and professional practice. Furthermore, all study participants engaged in sociocultural learning practices to facilitate their change. Finally, study participants experienced self-reflective changes.

This thesis contains an introductory chapter on orbifolds. Besides rudimentary basics we discuss more advanced topics like discrete torsion and asymmetric orbifold groups. As examples we investigate torus compactifications and an asymmetric T^4/Z(3)^L x Z(3)^R orbifold. The following chapter explains the foundations of orientifolds, including open strings with Chan-Paton degrees of freedom. Chapters 4-7 present own research. In chapter 4 we quantize open strings with linear boundary conditions, as they show up in electro-magnetic fields. We quantize the zero- and momentum-modes for toroidal compactifications, too. As an application we calculate the commutator of the coordinate fields in the case of general constant Neveu-Schwarz U(1)-field strengths. Thereby we confirm previous results on non-commutativity of open string theories in Neveu-Schwarz backgrounds. Chapter 5 reviews the results of a former publication [1] on asymmetric orientifolds, supplemented by some recent insights in connection with the preceeding chapter. Chapter 6 is a summary of [2]. In this publication we investigated to what extend one can build phenomenologically interesting models from toroidal orientifolds. By turning on magnetic fluxes on D9-branes we induce chiral fermions. Most calculations are performed in an (equivalent) T-dual picture. Here the number of chiral fermions is given by the topological intersection number of D-branes. In orientifolds of toroidal compactifications one obtains either non-chiral or non-supersymmetric orientifold solutions. However both properties can be reconciled in orientifolds that are obtained from specific supersymmetric orbifold compactifications. In chapter 7 we present the "sigma Omega"-Orientifold on a T^6/Z(4) orbifold. As a very attractive example we investigate a supersymmetric U(4) x U(2)^3_L x U(2)^3_R model that is broken to an MSSM-like model by switching on suitable background fields in the low energy effective action. This chapter is based on our publication [3]. The thesis is supplemented by an appendix with formulas applied in the text, as well as proofs to two theorems that were used as well.

Abstract:
Increasing number of pregnancy applications (apps) are complementing healthcare systems to educate expectants and improve their maternal well-being. Using similar kind of applications for people from multicultural background might have varied impact on their pregnancy experiences. Especially for immigrants, cultural beliefs first set in their home country, might conflict with practices followed in country of residence and information provided in digital resources. This study aimed to compare the perceptions on pregnancy app usage by first-time expectants living in Sweden from native and migrant perspectives. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews through an online platform, Zoom, and explored the users’ opinions on app’ usage. Twelve first-time expectants were recruited through snowball sampling technique using social media group. Data was then analyzed using thematic qualitative analysis. The findings indicate the importance of understanding healthcare practices and social support in country of residence. Participants expressed that they developed a connection with unborn through pregnancy apps. However, app usage raised conflicts between user expectations from knowledge gained by apps and information provided by healthcare system, also exposed potential problems faced by immigrants due to different approaches followed by Swedish healthcare system. Participants using English apps expressed that they are receiving updates according to American healthcare system, while participants using Swedish apps asserted that they are getting relevant information adapted to Swedish society. The study advocates that the apps are not well-suited for migratory background users and provided possible solutions to improve existing pregnancy apps for maximum number of users to benefit.

The aim of this thesis is the study of Wittgenstein s analyses of time, during the middle period, and the connections of those analyses to the private language argument. This study showed the importance granted to memory, in 1929-1930, which allowed using it as a key concept for the understanding of a major change that happened to Wittgenstein s philosophy in the early thirties (the abandonment of the thesis of the complete determination of sense). The understanding of this abandonment, through the perspective of the analyses of time, taking memory as a key concept, was used as a backdrop for the comprehension of some important passages from the book Philosophical Investigations, in which Wittgenstein deals with the problem of the language of sense-data and private experience.

Calvert, Arran James. "Living with Durham Cathedral : understanding the dynamic relationships between a community and their cathedral." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/12034.

Abstract:
Cathedrals today are no longer sites of just religious worship, they must be many things to many people such as tourist attractions, heritage centres, and meeting places. Today, Durham Cathedral in the north-east of England is home to almost 900 people engaged on site, of which almost 700 are volunteers. Add to that number over 700,000 visitors and about 1,700 religious services annually, and a complex image of life within Durham Cathedral begins to take shape. Drawing on 14 months of ethnographic fieldwork between August 2013 and September 2014, this thesis takes a phenomenological approach in exploring the dynamic relationships that exist between a 900-year-old building and those who regularly come into contact with that building. It will consider the complex negotiations that take place between the many parts of the community and the building in a constantly changing environment, and will focus on the role sound, light, time, and space play in the constant challenge of change and negotiation. Finally, it will consider how buildings are not only constructed but are also cultivated through being built and rebuilt, spaces negotiated and improvised, as well as filled with stories and memories. The importance of this research is not just in observing and understanding the types of change and negotiation that occur between a building and those who inhabit it, but also in understanding the altering roles of religious buildings as they cope with the changing demands of running a site of both historical and continuing social, religious, and financial pressures, Durham Cathedral is a place that gives space to differing communities, allowing people to find in the building what they need from the building and as a result of this, Durham Cathedral is not a place in which life happens, it is a place with which life happens.

Abstract:
The aim of following thesis is to demonstrate the potentials of reassessing camp into a question of method. While others have argued for the definition of camp to lie in: an aesthetic; a question of taste; the extravagant theatrical; the male gay sensibility; or as an expression of parody, this thesis suggests that camp is to be found in the performative act of readings. With emphasis on ‘decoding language’, ‘the signifier/signified’ and ‘the camp eye’ I will argue for the relevance of ‘camp as method’ and situate former stated in relation to Bhabha’s concept of ‘conversational art’; a deconstructional examination of values of aesthetic experiences set into dialogue. Demonstrating for such conceptualization three theoretical approaches and themes will be outlined. First, a historical overview of camp followed by a reassessment of camp into a method. Second, an examination of possible extensions to the concept of rereading strategies within camp, including theories on queer phenomenology; queer space and time; topias and non-places; theories of curatorial methods and its agencies. And last, I will do an analysis of Moyra Davey’s video Hemlock Forest and show how Davey’s use and reference towards Chantal Akerman can be read as camp and constitutes ‘camp as method’ according to suggested reassessment.

Baldissera, Marcia. "Quelles expériences pour quels films? Les temps de notre relation esthétique au monde." Thesis, Paris, EHESS, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017EHES0074.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the aesthetic structure of the cinematographic experience. We depart from a definition of film as an (audio)visual flux with a beginning, an evolution, and an end. From the evidence of this constructive principle, this thesis intends to show how the temporal structure of films generates cognitive differences in the spectators' experience. The notion of “temporal structure” is related to the ordering of shots and sounds within their durations in succession and/or in simultaneity, while the adjective “cognitive” refers to the acquisition process and use of our knowledge. This study is based on Kant's aesthetics, Husserl's phenomenology, Deleuze's cinema analysis, Searle's Intentionality, and Schaeffer's aesthetic and fiction cognition theories, in an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing on cognitive sciences empirical data. It is a comparative analysis of the unfolding of the cinematographic reception process – perception, attention and comprehension – and takes the different times of this reception into account, that is, the relation between the object film and the spectators. The objective is twofold: on the one hand it is a question of uncovering the cognitive implications of the cinematographic technique for the spectators' experience through close consideration of the functions of this technique and the principles which the authors’ Intentionality have inscribed upon it; on the other hand, it is a question of evaluating the scope of these constructive and Intentional principles on contemporary cinema, as recent decades have emphasized the progressive radicalization of filmic rhythm. Cinema becomes as such an example of the temporal structures that uphold our relation to the real world

Abstract:
The aim of our thesis is to shed light on the development of Jacques Derrida’s thought in his writings of the 1950s and 1960s, that is the “genesis of deconstruction”. As he began his philosophical career as a phenomenologist, we will deal mainly with his three works on the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl. The problem of time is the guiding theme of this thesis. It is possible to say that Derrida elaborates his own thought by having it out with the phenomenological notion of time. We attempt to conceptualize his singular idea of time, while taking into account the impossibility of such a conceptualization. However, this work is not limited to the retroactive analysis of his youthful philosophy. We also seek to reexamine the well-known “deconstruction of the metaphysics” by clarifying the nascent deconstruction. It is not a question of overcoming once and for all the metaphysics of presence, but of the fatal complicity between the metaphysical desire and the decision, nevertheless, to deconstruct it

Abstract:
The aim of the present study is to analyze the conception of time in six books of poems by José Hierro (1922-2002): Tierra sin nosotros (1947), Alegría (1947), Con las piedras, con el viento… (1950), Quinta del 42 (1952), Cuanto sé de mí (1957) and Libro de las alucinaciones (1964). It is suggested that the theme of time in Hierro´s poetry can be approached from three different points of view: existence, essence and consciousness. Furthermore, these three different perspectives are reflected in a chronological division of Hierro´s books of poems into three periods: existential poetry, intimist poetry and hallucinatory poetry. In order to develop and reinforce the thematic study, on the one hand, a comparative study is carried out that focuses on the relationship between poetry and philosophy, and, on the other, the thematic configuration on the surface level is considered. The methodological foundations that make it possible to achieve this objective are provided by Jean-Pierre Richard´s thematic criticism, Edmund Husserl´s phenomenology and Paul Ricoeur´s phenomenological hermeneutics. The dissertation concludes that Tierra sin nosotros and Alegría represent Hierro´s existential poetry, written during the post-war period and the reigning atmosphere of existentialism. Alegría, Con las piedras, con el viento… and Quinta del 42 constitute his intimist poetry. The second book, Alegría, is described as a “bridging book” between the first two periods. When the immediacy of the Civil War begins to fade, the literary scene shifts towards the more intimate theme of knowledge, and in Hierro´s poetry especially the phenomenon of time. In Quinta del 42, Cuanto sé de mí and Libro de las alucinaciones the reader encounters Hierro´s hallucinatory poetry. Quinta del 42 is another example of a “bridging book” between two periods. His hallucinatory poems transmit an extreme form of the search for inner truth which entails the deconstruction of time and space.

Abstract:

The Dissertation investigates the historicity of existence, its meaning and impact, from Wilhelm Dilthey’s Works and Heidegger’s reading of it: What does being historical mean, and what are the consequences of this historicity on philosophical thought? Dilthey’s approach to this problem is based on a “concrete psychology” which, by developing the implications of the facticity of life, leads to an historical anthropology. Heidegger radicalizes this psychological and historical Diltheyan questioning by reconsidering the problem of historicity from the point of view of the “being” of existence, which also involves a renewed conception of temporality. The latter leads to the threshold of a conception of life as “eventiality” which means both a break with Dilthey and the possibility of taking over an improved version of Dilthey’s major issues. The research examines in particular the transition from a philosophical hermeneutics to a hermeneutic philosophy based on the acknowledgment of the radical historicity of life. Heidegger’s appropriation of Diltheyan themes and concepts in the context of this transition is analyzed in a detailed manner. Finally, the question is raised how philosophy has to deal with its historicity. Dilthey’s response to the historical undermining of the very possibility of metaphysics consists in the development of a doctrine of worldviews. Heidegger carries out a transcendental radicalization of the concept of history – the latter however being soon anew reversed for the benefit of the “event”.

This work demonstrates how Heidegger reveals a new and more original conception of temporality from the studies of Paul’s Letters and Agostine’s confessions in spite of the common time understanding – which is derived from the Greek thought tradition. For that, the temporal question development present in early Heidegger’s work is adressed, in particular in the studies Einleitung in die Phänomenologie der Religion (EPR) and Augustinus und der Neuplatonismus (AN), to search for elements to analyze the concept of time present in Sein und Zeit. In the first analised curse (EPR), Heidegger discovers from the Christians lives discribed in Pauline’s Letters a way by which present, past and future are lived in fatical live experience through one decision filled with anguish. In AN, a understanding of Agostine’s kairological time – expressed in the tenth book of Confessiones – is also revealed, though this is darkened by the adoption of a Neoplatonic conception. In this course, the man – who has the particular power of put himself in question – needs to live in one anguisshand continuous temptation to reach the vera vita beata, i. e., God, where it is possible to be lost or be saved in each moment. Through this way in SZ, Heidegger searches the original phenomenon of temporality so that, from this, he could explain the need and the type of origin of common understanding of time, where the daily Dasein counts its time, levels the temporality. So, time is authentically revealed aways sent to the future the unfolding of Dasein’s Being itself towards his extreme and indetermined possibility of his impossibility.

This thesis concerns about the possibility of the constitution of a music phenomenology. For such analysis we have chosen the most elaborated tentative of construction of such phenomenology, the one of the swiss mathematician, musician and philosopher Ernest Ansermet. We have elaborated a description of important points to the comprehension of Ansermet s thought, of his intellectual influences. After, we have tried to show a possible phenomenology of this conductor and the conditions of possibilities of production of a music phenomenology. We have show time s phenomenology and mathematic s phenomenology, as well as the relation of ethic and esthetic, enter this project, of a music phenomenology. In each topic, we always mention authors correlated to Ansermet, to underline alternative possibilities of realization of the same philosophic project. To sum up, we have evaluated the music s phenomenology project of Ernest Ansermet with all elements related during our research

Abstract:
This PhD dissertation is a theoretical approach to the study of cinematic time in interactive audiovisual works, from two approaches: firstly, from a narrative organisation, their uses and temporal treatment; and secondly, their experience and perception. Time is a subject continuously being transformed in history due to the constant advance of information and communication technologies, which have modified the way we use and conceive it throughout images. Nowadays, in digital media, we need to pay attention to the new temporal configurations that are emerging, strongly conditioned by new digital interactive interfaces, mobile devices and the Internet. Based in the analysis of several case studies from cybertext, Future Cinema, Digital Arts and Videogames, this work provides temporal elements and frameworks related to digital storytelling and temporal experience, that allows an analysis of time phenomena and fosters future interactive experiences based on temporal enjoyment.
