Abstract:
The PhD journey is different from all other activities in higher education. It ́s a period of construction of the research and is also a time for integration in the academy, in the field of research, and at the higher education system. During the enrolment in the PhD, the person's growth and the live experience change the perception that the doctorate has of the PhD and the research journey. The experiences as a doctoral student and as a researcher under construction, who is supervised/oriented/ guided by a supervisor, shape the way of thinking and action regarding the institution and the academy but also influence the way they see and felt the PhD journey and their beliefs. It is argued in this paper that an initial (de)formed perception of the real PhD journey and supervision, may influence the satisfaction of the students with it, and the disappointment impact the option to leave the academy or to continue. The current paper describes the change in the perception, motives, and of the curriculum quality and adequacy to doctoral personal journeys, during the doctorate. But it also reflects a PhD students’ personal journey and their perceptions concerning the PhD supervisors, host institutions, and the academy.

Abstract:
Purpose – The aim of this paper is to explore the types of social networks and relationships that PhD candidates identify as important in a successful PhD journey. Design/methodology/approach – We use an under-utilised yet rich data source: PhD thesis acknowledgements. The paper employs a sample of 79 PhD acknowledgements drawn from diverse disciplines across Australian universities to illustrate the types of social support provided, who and what is acknowledged as providing support and the intersections between the types and providers of support. Findings – Key findings of the paper are that three types of support are evident – emotional, academic and instrumental – and that families, colleagues and supervisors, as well as others, are acknowledged for providing all three forms of support. Further, acknowledgements give insights into students’ personal and professional development and identification as researchers. Research limitations/implications – This research helps higher degree research recognise the breadth of relationships in the PhD process to make provisions that encourage such network building. It delineates the meaning and value of social support in successful doctoral candidature. So far, little empirical research has outlined the types of support valued by students. Originality/value – The study confirms the critical place of candidates’ networks in the PhD journey, broadens the view of what constitutes support and identifies the range of individuals involved in the process. It identifies potential in acknowledgements as a source of evidence of social support and researcher development in the PhD experience.

Abstract:
Unexpected twists and turns on the PhD journey can be directly related to the research itself, while others are related to the experience of the journey. For me, the most unexpected aspects were related to my health and saw me transition from writing and typing to dictating to the computer. This autoethnographic article is based on the lived experience of this unexpected journey and explores the implications for this necessary change in procedure. Implications included learning new processes for writing, transcribing interviews and controlling the computer by voice. Consideration of this experience viewed through Heidegger's ontological concept of being helped ease frustrations brought on by this unexpected twist. Becoming aware of the skills mentioned above may help others with accessibility issues, and reflection on the PhD journey from the perspective of this article may help others make sense of frustrations related to their own experiences.

Abstract:
Little is known about the experiences of doctoral students who are active duty military or veterans seeking a degree in counselor education and supervision (CES). The purpose of this research was to positively impact the counseling profession by ensuring adequate representation of military-competent counselors through an exploration of the academic journey of military students. This research sought to highlight military students' perceptions of barriers and contributors to degree completion. Selection criteria for participants involved any United States military personnel classified as active or inactive. These military personnel had to have earned within the past 12 months or were currently enrolled in a counselor education and supervision PhD program at an institution accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. This research adopted a phenomenological hermeneutic theoretical approach to explore the lived experiences of 6 military students on their journey to degree completion in a CES doctoral program. The central research question focused on the lived experiences of military CES students related to their journey towards degree completion. Key results emerged in the form of themes that contributed to degree completion such as helping other veterans/giving back and programmatic fit. Themes that showed prevalent barriers to degree completion included professional identity development, military students and degree completion, environmental factors, and access to military counselors. The implications of this study for social change include supporting academic institutions in reducing the attrition rates of military CES students.

Full text
Abstract:
The journal bearing is a critical machine element typically used to support rotating motion in high speed machinery. Through the generation of a hydrodynamic pressure in its thin lubricant film, which is usually in the order of 10-100μmthick depending on the diameter of the journal itself, the bearing is able to withstand large loads, both statically and dynamically, while having a very low rate of wear. It is of course essential that these components provide for a safe operation with as little wear and frictional losses as possible and it is therefore of great interest to develop simulation models of constantly increasing accuracy. Typical relevant quantities when designing a bearing are the load carrying capacity, metal/oil temperature, minimum film thickness, stiffness, damping and power loss. Classical lubrication theory builds upon the Navier-Stokes equations which, with the thin film approximation, can be reduced to a single equation which governs the hydrodynamic pressure build up in the lubricant. Since the problem now has been reduced to solving a single non linear partial differential equation in 2 dimensions, a significant advantage in terms of simulation time compared to the full set of Navier-Stokes equations can be enjoyed with an, in most cases, insignificant error of approximation. However, with time, as the need for bearings capable of operating at higher loads, speeds and with new designs involving more complex geometries, such as, for example, textured surfaces, the applicability of classic thin film theory should not be taken for granted, especially not when there is an increasing amount of turbulence involved. The purpose of the work contained in this thesis is to develop and asses the performance of a state of the art 3D TEHD model using the commercial finite element multi physics software COMSOL Multiphysics. Of special interest is the assessment of the Menter Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model, which is a widely used, standard, 2-equation RANS eddy viscosity model, in predicting characteristic values for a bearing operating in the transition range between laminar and turbulent flow. A comparative study is carried out where the present model is benchmarked against experimental data on a large 4 pad tilting pad journal bearing. The present model is also compared to one of the classic models based on thin film theory. The present model is also used to study the influence of the geometry that constitutes the leading edge groove in a tilting pad journal bearing on the turbulence levels. Finally the possibility of using a shear thinning lubricant for reducing the bearing power loss is investigated. The calculations were all performed using the resources of the super computer cluster at HPC2N at Ume ̊a University. The results clearly show the inadequacy of the SST turbulence model when performing calculations on a bearing operating in the transition range between laminar and turbulent flow. Moreover, the model predicts slightly higher average values of turbulence in a leading edge grooved bearing compared to a conventional one, yet a higher maximum value in the latter.

Abstract:
This thesis studies the effectiveness of existing translation models in the context of everyday translation and proposes a new translation model. The thesis reviews a number of approaches to the process of translation from the Roman times to the present before focusing on contemporary translation theory and the representation of the translation process by means o f translation models. The thesis introduces - and comments on - a number of existing translation models and then proceeds to develop a new model of the process, which aims to present a more holistic view of the process than the models discussed. The second part of the thesis concentrates on the testing of the model. Two very practical tests are applied to the model in order to assess the accuracy of the representation and the usability of the model in the context o f everyday translation. The first test applied to the model has, however, another function. It aims to provide a contemporary readership with a readable English translation of a Renaissance Latin text, the first book of the Instructiones historico-theologicae de doctrina Christiana et vario rerum statua temporibus Apostolici, ad tempora usque seculi decimi septime prior a (1645) by John Forbes o f Corse. This enables a wide audience with very little or no knowledge o f Latin to gain access to the complex theological argument contained in the specimen text. The commentary on the English translation, and on extracts of the German and French translations of this work serves to test the applicability of the model in the context of translation into more than one language. The second test concentrates on the translation from English into German and German into English. For this test, two groups of students from the Universities of Trier and Rostock in Germany were asked to carry out the same translation exercise. The study o f the work received from these students allows me to assess the usability o f the model as a guideline for translators. The thesis concludes by saying that the model has proved successful on both occasions, and by offering suggestions for further study.

Abstract:
The achievement of a balanced and consistent PhD Thesis proposal is a challenge for each PhD student. This paper intends to unfold and reflect on the tactics used by the authors in the course named “Seminário de Projeto de Tese” (Thesis Project Seminar) lectured at the Doctoral Program in Design at the Lisbon School of Architecture, Univ. of Lisbon. The main goal of this reflection is to present and question the key elements of this “kick-off” moment, but mostly, to convey the way they are worked along with the students and later concatenated in a robust proposal that maps the research project. In methodological terms, we will be using literature review to frame the work and we will assess the didactics used in class. As a result of this work, we show a step-by-step didactic process explained and open to be used. These guidelines have proven to be very assertive.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper summarizes the development during the last 50 years of tilting pad journal bearing analysis and design. The major impetus of this development was a landmark paper published by Jorgen Lund in 1964, “Spring and Damping Coefficients for the Tilting-Pad Journal Bearing.” His paper contained the first widely published dynamic coefficients for tilting pad bearings along with his pad assembly method equations. In the 37 years since Lund’s publication, many other authors have written tilting pad journal bearing codes, the first of which were based on Lund’s assembly method. These assembly method codes were utilized for many years to analyze and design tilting pad bearings for improved rotordynamic performance. During this time, some key design tools were developed utilizing Lund’s method. Other authors have written newer codes which solve the energy and elasticity equations iteratively with the pressure equation, including pad degrees of freedom. With the simple addition of a turbulence correction and heat balance, many designers continue to utilize Lund’s method, shunning the more modern codes.

Abstract:
This paper describes in detail the case history of a steam turbine affected by very high level of vibrations. Spectral analysis showed that the turbine shaft exhibited high sub-synchronous harmonic components. The analysis of the machine dynamic behavior, fully described here, allowed excluding some causes of instability like steam whirl or oil whirl/whip. The cause of the abnormal vibration level was ascribed to fluttering phenomena that affected some shoes of one of the “load on pad-type” four-pad tilting-pad journal bearings on which the rotor was supported. This abnormal behaviour was caused by the assembling error of the bottom shoe. Moreover, when approaching the operating speed, it was rather difficult to obtain a suitable convergent oil-film on the lateral pads. This reason, as well as the periodic changes of the journal position inside the bearing caused by the shaft synchronous vibrations due to the turbine residual imbalance, generated the excitation of sub-synchronous vibrations of both pads and shaft.

Abstract:
In this paper, the nonlinear dynamic behaviour of vertical and horizontal rotors in compliant tilting pad journal bearings has been investigated. White metal and compliant bearings with line pivot pads are compared. The dynamic response of four pad bearings with different preload factors is studied. The effect of viscoelasticity is also considered in comparison with purely elastic compliant and white metal liners. The influence of radial clearance and pad offset is analysed. It is shown how pad design parameters such as preload factor, pivot offset, viscoelasticity of the liner, and radial clearance can be selected to control the size of the journal orbit in compliant bearings.

Abstract:
Predicted and measured bearing metal temperatures of tilting-pad journal bearings are examined. All bearings are a five-pad design with load-between-pad orientation. The two loaded pads in each bearing are instrumented with an RTD. Bearing pad metal temperatures are measured as a part of the ISO 10439 (API 617) mechanical test requirement. Bearing pad metal temperatures are predicted using thermoelastohydrodynamic (TEHD) analysis method. One particular bearing size: 4 inches (101.6 mm) diameter and 1.54 inches (39.12 mm) axial length is examined with respect to tolerance range influence on predicted pad metal temperatures including effect of bearing assembled clearance and preloads. A range of loads and speeds are investigated. Temperature variation observed for this bearing size is compared against variation in measured temperature data for three other bearing sizes (bearing sizes denoted by diameter × axial length), 2.95 inches (74.9 mm) × 1.02 inches (25.9 mm), 6 inches (152.4 mm) × 3 inches (76.2 mm), and 8 inches (203.2 mm) × 7 inches (177.8 mm).

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a transient analysis of the motion of unloaded upper pads in a tilting pad journal bearing. It is known that such pads can exhibit self-excited vibration called pad fluttering, which can initiate fatigue damage due to elastic contacts between the fluttering pad and the journal. Unlike previous studies, this work attempts to evaluate forces in the contact. This evaluation is done using a robust nonlinear model, which considers hydrodynamic lubrication, out-of-balance forces and Hertzian contacts. Furthermore, qualitative changes of the bearing’s components motions are analysed in a wide range of journal speeds using bifurcation diagrams, phase portraits and estimates of the largest Lyapunov coefficients. The analysis reveals the intriguing nature of the system, which bifurcates between the periodic motion, period-doubling and chaos.
