Abstract:
At a phase transition two or more different phases may coexist, such as vapour and liquid. Phase transitions can be classified according to their order. A phase transition is of first order if going from one phase to the other involves a discontinuous change in entropy, and, thus, a finite amount of latent heat; higher-order phase transitions do not involve latent heat but exhibit other types of discontinuities. This chapter investigates the necessary conditions for the coexistence of phases, and how phases are represented in a phase diagram. The order of a phase transition is defined with the help of the Ehrenfest classification. The chapter discusses the Clausius–Clapeyron relation which, for a first-order phase transition, relates the discontinuous changes in entropy and volume. Finally, this chapter considers the Ising ferromagnet as a simple model which exhibits a second-order phase transition. It also introduces the notion of an order parameter.

Abstract:
The medical complications after bariatric surgery vary based on the procedure performed. Medical complications should be considered at specific phases after surgery. The various stages are: phase one (1 to 6 weeks), phase two (7 to 12 weeks), and phase three (13 weeks to 12 months). The various complications at each phase are discussed in this chapter, along with strategies to prevent postoperative complications. Finally, this chapter emphasizes the importance of the multidisciplinary postoperative evaluation of all bariatric surgery patients. The evaluation includes monitoring for health conditions as the patient loses weight, including hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, and hyperlipidemia. Monitoring the trajectory of weight loss, screening for micronutrient deficiencies, monitoring proper macronutrient intake, and assessment for development of late surgical complications are included in the multidisciplinary postoperative evaluation at all phases of follow-up.

Abstract:
The lower urinary tract has two main functions; the collection and low pressure storage of urine and periodical controlled elimination of urine at an appropriate time. In order to achieve continence during bladder filling and storage and produce efficient and effective bladder emptying, there is accurate coordination between opening and closing of the urethral sphincters and contraction of the detrusor smooth muscle. The process of micturition has two phases: the storage/filling phase and the voiding phase. The analogy for the transition between these two phases has been described as an on-off circuit, rather akin to flicking a light switch, between synchronous bladder contraction and urethral outlet relaxation, and vice versa. These phases are regulated by a complex, integration of somatic and autonomic efferent and afferent mechanisms that coordinate the activity of the bladder and urethra. This chapter provides an overview of our current understanding of these complex mechanisms.

Heimann, Fritz. The Politics of Anticorruption. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190458331.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter uncovers the politics behind anticorruption. During the two decades since corruption has emerged as an issue on the global agenda, the politics of anticorruption has developed through five phases. In the first phase, Transparency International (TI) began a solitary effort to combat global corruption. In the second phase, international organizations including the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) became active developing anticorruption conventions. In the third phase, governments adopted national laws and regulations implementing these conventions. In the fourth phase, companies developed compliance programs. In the fifth phase, popular mass movements are playing an increasing role opposing corrupt governments.

Abstract:
As the early universe cools down, it may perform transitions to phases with more and more broken symmetries. In a first-order phase transition, fields may be trapped in the false vacuum; the rate of the resulting tunneling process to the true vacuum is derived. Phase transitions can lead also to the formation of topological defects. Their structure and the reason for their stability are discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
Bifurcation typically involves the division of arbitral proceedings into separate phases addressing jurisdiction/admissibility and the merits and, less frequently, the division of the merits phase into liability and quantum phases. However, tribunals are not restricted to bifurcating proceedings along these lines. For example, some tribunals have bifurcated proceedings in order to hear certain jurisdictional objections as preliminary issues while reserving other jurisdictional objections to be heard with parties’ arguments on the merits. Others still have ‘trifurcated’ proceedings into separate phases dealing with issues of jurisdiction, liability, and quantum. This chapter discusses factors that may provide guidance for parties in making arguments either for or against bifurcation.

Abstract:
The remaining chapters are detailed expositions of the four phases of the Physicianship Curriculum. This chapter introduces Phase I. Encompassing 8 months of curricular time, this phase is dedicated to the nature of persons and personhood. We define these complex entities and begin our teaching with reference to living, healthy people. We describe the five broad subject areas of this phase. It is in this initial phase that students begin learning the clinical method, including observation, attentive listening, and the spoken language of medicine. Students are introduced to case-based teaching, and they have their first encounters with patients. The chapter provides examples of weekly schedules and outlines the materials and concepts that are addressed. Last, it describes specific educational strategies.
