Chaix-Murys, Elodie. "Addiction et maintien de l'abstinence : l'intérêt des approches thérapeutiques focalisées sur la compassion." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université Côte d'Azur, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024COAZ2047.
Full textAddiction is a complex issue influenced by neurobiological, emotional, and relational factors that contribute to the persistence of addictive behaviors and limit access to psychotherapy. The objective of this thesis is to examine the influence of compassion and psychological flexibility as protective factors that promote the maintenance of abstinence. The thesis is structured into three parts: a theoretical section that presents a multidimensional approach to addiction and details the various psychotherapies developed to support recovery processes; an experimental section comprising three studies; and a third part dedicated to the general discussion and synthesis of the research findings. The first study focuses on the development and evaluation of the MY ACT Addiction therapeutic program, specifically designed to support the maintenance of abstinence in patients with polyaddictions and psychiatric comorbidities. This program integrates the principles of compassion-focused therapy with behavioral therapies (CBT, ACT). A multiple case series protocol was employed to assess the program's feasibility, acceptability, and clinical impact through qualitative and quantitative measures. Results reveal a high level of acceptability for the program, along with significant clinical improvements in craving, depression, anxiety, psychological flexibility, and components of self-compassion. These findings suggest that compassion-based psychological interventions may serve as a transdiagnostic protective factor promoting the maintenance of abstinence in individuals with polyaddictions. The second study examines the relationships between addiction, mental health, and attachment styles, as well as the role of psychological flexibility and self-compassion. Results indicate that individuals suffering from addiction have experienced more traumatic events and exhibit higher levels of depression and anxiety, alongside a negative perception of their close relationships. Psychological flexibility emerges as a central mediating factor in these interrelations, underscoring the importance of integrating therapeutic approaches centered on psychological flexibility, interpersonal relationships, and compassion in addiction treatment. Finally, the third study explores fears of compassion, perceived as barriers to establishing secure relationships and accessing psychotherapeutic care. The study validates the French version of the "Fears of Compassion Scale" and proposes a short version while examining its correlations with other relevant concepts. Results confirm the psychometric robustness of this short version in Francophone clinical contexts and its utility for clinical and research assessments in French. These findings open new avenues for understanding the impact of fears of compassion on mental health and their influences on addictive behaviors. In conclusion, this thesis highlights the protective role of psychological flexibility and compassion in maintaining abstinence, as well as the relevance of integrative and process-oriented approaches. The results have led to scientific publications, including one in a peer-reviewed journal (Annales Médicopsychologiques), an article submitted to Personality and Individual Differences, another article currently under submission, and a widely disseminated article (Santé Mentale), as well as presentations at national and international conferences (Congrès de l'Encéphale, Annual Congress of the AFTCC, French Congress of Psychiatry, Annual Congress of the International Society of Addiction Medicine)

Full textReconsidering event media pictures trough the prism of collective fears allows raising differently the political and social issues. The evolution of the news media with Internet as well as the frequent public debates on the news pictures reveal a new apprehension of event pictures. The ambiguous relation of belief and doubt inherent to any picture reinforce the virality of today's media images. Photographs and videos of terrorist attacks, disasters and various crises spread and redefine fears, bringing out the fear of pictures. Powers of media and pictures combine together creating a climate of anxiety which oscillates between reality and fiction. This fine arts doctoral research questions the practices and the positioning of artists who problematize these relationships between images, fears and events. The experience of the mediatised event, re-proposed and re-made by these artists, is built in the relationship between excess and lack of visibility (which pictures to diffuse or not) and can exorcise or amplify collective fears, like a call for vigilance. Articulating theoretical investigation and personal practice - which is based on the collection of media pictures - allows demonstrating the negative and positive aspects of the uses of pictures and fears today, simultaneously remedies and poisons of a worried society

Full textWhen disasters and catastrophes are prominent features of social and collective life, our aesthetic and cognitive vision or conception of the world is challenged or even overwhelmed. The contemporary world is experiencing a crisis that has shaken our certainties about nature and society’s control. This crisis is paradoxical, because it is rooted in our immense powers of transformation; the very same powers that sustain our hopes of progress. The unexpected consequences of these powers now feed our collective anxieties and fears. This research takes a sociological perspective to assess the influence of the social imaginary on the production of disaster events, and, in turn, the impact of the production of disaster events on the opinions, attitudes and risk-prevention behaviors and social representations of security. Based on a corpus of ten catastrophes (the December 1999 storm in Western Europe to the Fukushima disaster in 2011), and supported by field work (press, literature, cinema, video games and also disaster preparedness groups), this work reveals the effectiveness of the Durandian archetype and reveals reactivation of ancient myths and the emergence of new tales in the social complex, while introducing a new idea in the Occident: our age is fascinated by its power, but also terrified of a future in which it can see only promises of decline

Full textBackground: There´s a high speed in the emergency care and the expectation of the nurse seems to be versatile with quick assessment, confront the patients suffering and to prioritize the most acute patient in a stressful work environment. Untenable work environment with suffering patients and a high work speed for the nurse can developed compassion fatigue which means a lost of the ability to feel empathy. Purpose: To illustrate factors that causes compassion fatigue for nurses in emergency care. Method: A literature review consisting of 11 scientific articles with quantitative research. The search of the articles was performed in the databases CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed and WorldCat Discovery. Result: Three head themes was seen with analysis which was demographic factors, work relatable and psychosocial factors. Demographic factors which could cause compassion fatigue was age, gender and civil state. Work relatable factors was work environment which consisted less social support from managers and colleges, high workload, less team spirit and work relatable factors which consisted level of education, work experience and working hours. The psychosocial factors that was observed was stressors, patients suffering and trauma. Conclusion: Compassion fatigue needs to been seen and prioritize by individuals, colleges and managers in the healthcare. It was discovered that focus should be to create compassion satisfaction which prevent the appearance of compassion fatigue, which is relevant to embrace in staff development.

Full textThe aim of this work is to develop a self assessment scale, which measures fears and anxiety to 4-10 years old children when hospitalized. To realize this and responding on the faults found with existing tools, this scale has been constructed based an item response theory model, the Rasch model. When applying the EPAH tool (in French « Echelle des Peurs et d’Anxiété Hospitalières », which means “Hospital Fears and Anxiety Scale”) we follow the story of a hospitalized rabbit by the mean of twelve drawings. We invite the children to respond on three emotional tasks of verbalization: attribution, justification and appropriation of emotion. We also invite them to name the rabbit’s face-expression by assign task of the emotion. The results suggest that the EPAH tool enables us to verify the principal standards for responding to an objective measure, including a unidimensional assessment. Also, the EPAH tool presents good internal consistency and good outcome validity, pointing out the positive effect on the anxiety level of hospitalized children. Otherwise, the verbalization-tasks of emotion permitted us to approach the language development of the hospitalized children. The analyze of their views permitted us to detect an assessment of production of emotional terms to characterize a negative emotional state, but also to mark the presence of a emotional dissemblance. As a conclusion, the EPAH tool favors the assessment of the children’s anticipatory fear and anxiety-level, and it inserts in preoperative preparation of hospitalized children

Full textThe interest of the effect of self-compassion on psychological wellbeing has increased. Self-compassion is negatively associated with self-criticism, anxiety and obsession over and evaluation of the own body. Self-compassion is considered to protect against the negative effects of perfectionism. Since self-compassion is believed to improve mental health, it is important to investigate which variables that predict self-compassion. The aim of this study was to examine if the variables body image and perfectionism predicted self-compassion. The self- report questionnaires Self-compassion Scale Short Form, Frosts´s Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale and Body Shape Questionnaire-8C were administered to the participants. The result was calculated using hierarchical regression analysis. The result demonstrated that the subscale regarding perfectionism, Concern over Mistakes and Doubts about Actions, and sex significantly predicted self-compassion and explained a significant proportion of the variance in self-compassion. Body image did not significantly predict self-compassion and did not explain a significant proportion of the variance in self-compassion. Further research regarding potential concordance between perfectionism and body image is desirable.

Full textTo what extent do the foundations and essential concepts of French personalism (1930-1950) make it possible to consider compassion as a way to know the person ? Here is the problem this work faces. The first part analyses the experience of compassion through several figures and forms. After explaining the fundamental axes of French personalism, the second part shows that compassion is problematic to this current of thought because it brings to light personalism inner tensions. The third part confirms and tempers this diagnostic studying the role of compassion in M. Nédoncelle’s and E. Mounier’s works. The fourth part builds on S. Weil’s thought to offer a renewal of this personalism so as to remedy this underestimation of compassion. Finally, in the perspective of such a renewal, the last part questions the relation between personalism and Christianism

Full textThis study examined the relationship between compassion fatigue, how Cognitive Behavioral oriented therapists are, self-efficacy, how positively respondents viewed their time spent in therapy, and caseload. Surveys were mailed out to 400 doctorate level clinical psychologists licensed in Kentucky, Illinois, and Missouri. Respondents completed the Compassion Fatigue Self-Test for Psychotherapists, a demographics form, and a self-efficacy measure. Results indicated that the more positive therapists viewed their time spent in therapy, the lower their risk for compassion fatigue. Also, analyses found that clinicians who reported having a higher percentage of clients with a personality disorder diagnosis would be a higher risk for compassion fatigue.

Full textThe purpose of this study was to examine relationships between the treatment of people diagnosed with Personality Disorders and the experiences of burnout, compassion satisfaction, and compassion fatigue among mental health professionals.
Thirty-six mental health professionals completed a self-report survey using the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) Scale and indicated the percentage of individuals with Personality Disorders on their current caseloads. The results indicated that, on average, the mental health professionals had low levels of burnout and compassion fatigue and high levels of compassion satisfaction. Additional results indicated a significant positive relationship between the treatment of individuals diagnosed with Personality Disorders and compassion fatigue. Trends were apparent for burnout and compassion satisfaction.
Future research should include a larger and more diverse sample. Implications for social work practice and policy are that there should be more focus on self-care strategies for mental health professions treating a high percentage of individuals diagnosed with Personality Disorders.

Full textTitle IX Coordinators are educational administrators who play a critical role in providing campus environments free of sex discrimination, harassment, and violence. Their work is demanding, highly regulated, and set in an increasingly volatile political context. There is little research on the experiences of these administrators. Utilizing the Professional Quality of Life framework, this qualitative study explored the experiences of 20 Title IX Coordinators to understand their professional quality of life and organizational factors that influence their experiences. Findings revealed participants’ satisfaction was drawn from passion for “the work” and making a positive impact in their communities, and fatigue and burnout were tied to an intense and overwhelming workload. While fatigue can lead to a breaking point, moderating influences, e.g., coping strategies and balancing compassion with neutrality, mitigated negative factors. Institutional resistance and lack of understanding across stakeholders contributed to compassion fatigue, while institutional commitment and supportive interpersonal relationships affirmed the Title IX Coordinator’s experience. Implications include expanding the Title IX Coordinator’s passion for gender equity across the institution, and building institutional capacity to adequately respond to complaints, to benefit both the experience of the Title IX Coordinator and campus communities at large. Recommendations for policy and practice include creating Title IX teams, institutionalizing campus climate surveys, and supervision committed to building supportive working environments. Future research is recommended on how intersecting identities influence the Title IX Coordinator experience, and understanding campus attitudes toward Title IX and other civil-rights based responsibilities among constituent groups.
