Full textAddiction is a complex issue influenced by neurobiological, emotional, and relational factors that contribute to the persistence of addictive behaviors and limit access to psychotherapy. The objective of this thesis is to examine the influence of compassion and psychological flexibility as protective factors that promote the maintenance of abstinence. The thesis is structured into three parts: a theoretical section that presents a multidimensional approach to addiction and details the various psychotherapies developed to support recovery processes; an experimental section comprising three studies; and a third part dedicated to the general discussion and synthesis of the research findings. The first study focuses on the development and evaluation of the MY ACT Addiction therapeutic program, specifically designed to support the maintenance of abstinence in patients with polyaddictions and psychiatric comorbidities. This program integrates the principles of compassion-focused therapy with behavioral therapies (CBT, ACT). A multiple case series protocol was employed to assess the program's feasibility, acceptability, and clinical impact through qualitative and quantitative measures. Results reveal a high level of acceptability for the program, along with significant clinical improvements in craving, depression, anxiety, psychological flexibility, and components of self-compassion. These findings suggest that compassion-based psychological interventions may serve as a transdiagnostic protective factor promoting the maintenance of abstinence in individuals with polyaddictions. The second study examines the relationships between addiction, mental health, and attachment styles, as well as the role of psychological flexibility and self-compassion. Results indicate that individuals suffering from addiction have experienced more traumatic events and exhibit higher levels of depression and anxiety, alongside a negative perception of their close relationships. Psychological flexibility emerges as a central mediating factor in these interrelations, underscoring the importance of integrating therapeutic approaches centered on psychological flexibility, interpersonal relationships, and compassion in addiction treatment. Finally, the third study explores fears of compassion, perceived as barriers to establishing secure relationships and accessing psychotherapeutic care. The study validates the French version of the "Fears of Compassion Scale" and proposes a short version while examining its correlations with other relevant concepts. Results confirm the psychometric robustness of this short version in Francophone clinical contexts and its utility for clinical and research assessments in French. These findings open new avenues for understanding the impact of fears of compassion on mental health and their influences on addictive behaviors. In conclusion, this thesis highlights the protective role of psychological flexibility and compassion in maintaining abstinence, as well as the relevance of integrative and process-oriented approaches. The results have led to scientific publications, including one in a peer-reviewed journal (Annales Médicopsychologiques), an article submitted to Personality and Individual Differences, another article currently under submission, and a widely disseminated article (Santé Mentale), as well as presentations at national and international conferences (Congrès de l'Encéphale, Annual Congress of the AFTCC, French Congress of Psychiatry, Annual Congress of the International Society of Addiction Medicine)

Full textReconsidering event media pictures trough the prism of collective fears allows raising differently the political and social issues. The evolution of the news media with Internet as well as the frequent public debates on the news pictures reveal a new apprehension of event pictures. The ambiguous relation of belief and doubt inherent to any picture reinforce the virality of today's media images. Photographs and videos of terrorist attacks, disasters and various crises spread and redefine fears, bringing out the fear of pictures. Powers of media and pictures combine together creating a climate of anxiety which oscillates between reality and fiction. This fine arts doctoral research questions the practices and the positioning of artists who problematize these relationships between images, fears and events. The experience of the mediatised event, re-proposed and re-made by these artists, is built in the relationship between excess and lack of visibility (which pictures to diffuse or not) and can exorcise or amplify collective fears, like a call for vigilance. Articulating theoretical investigation and personal practice - which is based on the collection of media pictures - allows demonstrating the negative and positive aspects of the uses of pictures and fears today, simultaneously remedies and poisons of a worried society

Full textWhen disasters and catastrophes are prominent features of social and collective life, our aesthetic and cognitive vision or conception of the world is challenged or even overwhelmed. The contemporary world is experiencing a crisis that has shaken our certainties about nature and society’s control. This crisis is paradoxical, because it is rooted in our immense powers of transformation; the very same powers that sustain our hopes of progress. The unexpected consequences of these powers now feed our collective anxieties and fears. This research takes a sociological perspective to assess the influence of the social imaginary on the production of disaster events, and, in turn, the impact of the production of disaster events on the opinions, attitudes and risk-prevention behaviors and social representations of security. Based on a corpus of ten catastrophes (the December 1999 storm in Western Europe to the Fukushima disaster in 2011), and supported by field work (press, literature, cinema, video games and also disaster preparedness groups), this work reveals the effectiveness of the Durandian archetype and reveals reactivation of ancient myths and the emergence of new tales in the social complex, while introducing a new idea in the Occident: our age is fascinated by its power, but also terrified of a future in which it can see only promises of decline
