Abstract:

This dissertation centers on virtuosity as a source of creative genesis, boundary-pushing, and musical debate. Focusing on the careers and works of pianists Oscar Peterson (1925-2007) and Glenn Gould (1932-1982), I examine the role of the virtuoso in twentieth-century music-making, and his encounter with Canadian national identity. Gould and Peterson were contemporaries, and despite their differences - Gould was a white classical musician from Toronto, and Peterson, an African Canadian jazz artist from Montréal - their career paths share points of connection. Using archival material from the Glenn Gould fonds and the Oscar Peterson fonds at Library and Archives Canada, I analyze the work of both figures as sources of musical creativity through musical performance and composition. The first part of this dissertation demonstrates how Gould's and Peterson's respective performances sparked furor through their contestation of musical boundaries. In the first chapter, my analysis of outtakes from Gould's 1955 recording session of the Goldberg Variations illuminates how his radical musical philosophies emerged from his early recording practices. In chapter two, I examine critiques of Peterson's performance aesthetic from an extensive collection of reviews, and argue that his style of virtuosic jazz allowed him to push back against musical expectations. In the third chapter, I examine the work of Canadian filmmaker Norman McLaren whose experimental animation provided opportunities for partnerships with both musicians; with Peterson in 1949 and with Gould in 1969. The second part of my dissertation takes the reader outside the realm of performance and demonstrates how Gould and Peterson engaged with landscape through sound composition. The fourth chapter investigates the spatial and sonic interpretation of Canadian locales in Gould's Solitude Trilogy, a series of three experimental radio documentaries. In the final chapter, I unravel the biographical and musical influences in Peterson's multi-movement suite for jazz trio, Canadiana Suite. By studying these iconic virtuosos side-by-side, my dissertation illuminates the significance of the performer in Canada's cultural life in the second half of the twentieth-century and yields a new understanding of how Gould and Peterson exploded expectations in their respective musical communities.

Abstract:

Idag kan man se att Sverige är ett mångkulturellt land och den svenska skolan har blivit en mötesplats där elever med olika bakgrunder och erfarenheter dagligen träffas. Vilket kan vara en stor möjlighet till att en integration sker. Forskningen kring integrering har under de senaste åren valt att inrikta sig på att undersöka om hur läraren arbetar med eleverna med utländsk bakgrund när det gäller ämnet Idrott och hälsa. Syftet med vår uppsats är att undersöka hur lärare i idrott och hälsa arbetar med integration i skolor där majoriteten av eleverna har en utländsk bakgrund. För att uppnå vårt syfte har vi valt att göra en kvalitativ undersökning, genom att göra en semistrukturerad intervju med fyra lärare som undervisar i ämnet idrott och hälsa. Men innan intervjuerna skedde så observerade vi totalt 10 lektioner som komplement till intervjuerna. Uppsatsen kommer fram till att lärarna i idrott och hälsa som deltar i studien tar till hänsyn i sin lektionsplanering och i sin undervisning när det handlar om elever med utländsk bakgrund.

Abstract:

In this work, the effect of fiber diameter upon the strength, stiffness, and damage tolerance of a fiber-reinforced polymer composite laminate structure was investigated. Three cases were considered, in which the fiber diameters of 16, 8, and 4 microns were used. A fiber volume fraction of 32% was assumed in each model. Micromechanical, shear-lag, and progressive damage analyses were performed using finite element models of the structure, which was subjected to tensile loading in the fiber direction. Fiber-matrix load transfer efficiencies and the stress distributions near broken fibers within the composite structure were investigated and results compared for each fiber diameter. In addition, the effect of fiber diameter upon the initiation and evolution of fiber-matrix interfacial damage and debonding was studied using cohesive interface elements. For a specified volume fraction and load condition, as the fiber diameter was decreased the load transfer efficiency and effective stiffness of the broken fiber model increased. Also, as the fiber diameter was decreased, the initiation of damage at the fiber-matrix interface occurred at greater stresses and the subsequent growth of damage was less extensive. These results indicate that, for the same total mass, the performance and damage tolerance of composite materials may be enhanced simply by using smaller diameter fibers.

Abstract:

At St. John the Evangelist, students showed a disparity between how they perform and how they think they perform. In order to determine whether instruction of what learning is and metacognitive reading strategies would improve science literacy and confidence in science; students were given instruction in different learning styles and reading strategies for use in and out of the classroom. Learning logs during reading, concept maps to assess knowledge and regulatory checklists were used to determine if student learning improved. Reading comprehension was measured before and during treatment. Students did not show a marked increase in use of these strategies after the treatment; however reading comprehension and attitudes toward science improved.

Abstract:

The lack of passive, wireless, chemical and biological sensor systems is a significant impediment to sensor system applications. While active sensors with a wireless communications link continue to decrease in power consumption, they still require a power source, such as a battery. This active power consumption limits the useful life of the sensor and its applications. A more attractive solution would be a passive, wireless, chemical and biological sensor integrated with a wireless interrogation platform to monitor the sensor. The focus of this thesis is the realization of a wireless sensor interrogator capable of monitoring multiple, passive, resonant-frequency sensors. It is demonstrated, using Frequency Modulation Spectroscopy techniques, that the resonant frequency of a passive sensor can be detected and tracked over time. Simulated results are presented that verify the functionality of the proposed wireless sensor interrogator. In addition, an experimental hardware setup and subsequent experimental results are presented that verify the simulation results. Considerations for the design of the wireless sensor interrogator and opportunities for future research are discussed.

Abstract:

The metabolic effect of feeding psyllium daily to horses is unknown. Eight 11- to 16-yr-old (Trial 1) and sixteen 7- to 16-yr-old (Trial 2; Trial 3) light breed stock horses were used in a completely randomized design to determine the effects of psyllium supplementation on BW, BCS, neck circumference, tailhead fat, plasma glucose, insulin, leptin, ghrelin, and adiponectin concentrations. An intravenous glucose challenge was also performed and the same variables were measured (Trial 3). Horses were stratified by sex and BW and put on trial for 42 d (Trial 1) and 60 d (Trial 2). Horses were individually fed a grain ration at 0.5% BW (Trial 1) and 0.25% BW (Trial 2), hay at 1.5% BW (Trial 1;Trial 2), and a psyllium treatment. Psyllium treatment levels for Trial 1 were: 1) 90 g/d psyllium or 2) an isocaloric control and 0 g/d psyllium. In Trial 2 levels of 180 and 270 g/d psyllium were added. Trial 3 took place the day after Trial 2 ended; horses were administered an intravenous dextrose solution at 0.5% BW after a 12 h fasting period. In Trial 1, horses fed psyllium had a greater (P = 0.01) increase in neck circumference than those not fed psyllium. Trial 2 revealed treatment by time interactions for glucose (P < 0.001) and insulin (P = 0.03). Glucose was lower 90 min (P = 0.05) and 120 min (P < 0.001) after a meal in horses fed psyllium compared to those not fed psyllium. Insulin concentrations were lower 90 min (P = 0.002) and 300 min (P < 0.001) in horses fed psyllium compared to those that were not. There was no difference in glucose (P = 0.48) or insulin (P = 0.15) concentrations between horses on 90, 180, or 270 g psyllium treatments. In Trial 3, horses fed psyllium had lower glucose (P = 0.03) and adiponectin (P = 0.02) concentrations than horses not fed psyllium. Supplementing horses with any level of psyllium appears to lower concentrations of plasma glucose and serum insulin after a meal.

Abstract:

By the year 2020, the number of newly graduated nurses entering into nursing has been predicted to inadequately offset the anticipated number of experienced nurses retiring from the profession. In addition, recent estimates show newly graduated nurse turnover rates range from 14% to 60% during their first years of practice. A purposeful review of the literature was performed in order to gain insight into the process of transitioning from student to practicing nurse and to determine needs, experiences, and outcomes associated with newly graduated nurses in acute care settings. Once common intellectual, emotional, socio-cultural, and physical experiences were identified, an educational pamphlet was constructed. The purpose of creating such a pamphlet was to provide useful information, highlight specific common needs, and suggest resources and strategies to supplement newly graduated nurses throughout their transition period and socialization process. Current research shows newly graduated nurses can successfully transition into acute care settings with the provision of pertinent information; the guidance from key stakeholders including, educators, managers, and administrators; and the support of preceptorship, mentorship, and orientation programs. Positive transitional periods are associated with increased reports of job satisfaction and with lower voluntary turnover rates among newly graduated nurses.

Abstract Questo elaborato conclusivo muove dalla volontà di approfondire un saggio della studiosa Birgit Eriksson “On Common Tastes: heterogeneity and Hierarchies in Contemporary Cultural Consumption”, scritto nel 2009 e nato dalla volontà di tracciare una sorte di storia dell'analisi del gusto. Il percorso proposto dalla Eriksson parte da Kant sino a giungere alle ricerche più attuali per quanto riguarda l'ambito statunitense, senza dimenticare il passaggio imprescindibile per chiunque voglia avvicinarsi all'analisi dei gusti e disgusti: La Distinzione di Pierre Bourdieu. Quelle di Kant, Bourdieu e Peterson sono tre teorie apparentemente contrastanti e inavvicinabili, lo scopo di questo elaborato è stato proprio quello di proporre un confronto incrociato e valutare l'effettiva validità di ognuna di esse nell'ambito dei consumi contemporanei. Nella mia tesi ho riproposto un riassunto per ogni autore citato dalla Ericksson: Kant, Bourdieu e Peterson. Il primo capitolo è volto alla descrizione dei punti cardine della teoria distintiva bourdieuiana, mentre a seguire ho definito in maniera riassuntiva il pensiero filosofico di Kant, un punto di partenza necessario per poter affrontare al meglio il confronto fra le parti citate. La teoria kantiana e quella bourdieuiana sono viste come due elementi inconciliabili, la prima rappresenta la possibilità di democratica mentre nella seconda il gusto è visto come un mezzo in grado di dividere la società in frazioni. Richard Peterson è l'indiscusso rappresentate nell'ambito degli studi statunitensi sovracitati, i quali si sono focalizzati sull'ambito artistico e hanno realizzato una mappatura dei gusti musicali nei cittadini americani. In base ai risultati di questa ricerca Peterson propone una terza via, non vi è né unione né una netta separazione bensì esistono sì gusti di classe differenti ma vi è anche la possibilità di una contaminazione: le preferenze delle classi dominanti non sono più relegate ai soli generi tradizionali, ma si sono ampliate sino a coprire tutto lo spettro della cultura sonora. L'onnivorismo culturale si può difatti considerare come una sorta di ibridazione: gli intellettuali elitisti stanno espandendo i loro gusti e, conseguentemente, i loro consumi verso generi solitamente considerati di “basso livello”. Alla luce di tutte queste teorie sorge quindi una domanda: la nuova tendenza onnivora petersoniana è indice di una futura democraticizzazione in senso kantiano o rappresenta una rinnovata forma di dominazione distintiva in senso bourdieuiano?

Abstract:

The overall purpose of this study is to elucidate Wilhelm Peterson-Berger’s perception of gender and how it is manifested in his philosophy of art. His perception of gender also incorporates conceptions of history, music and nationality. The research question is analysed primarily by reviewing Peterson-Berger’s writings from 1896 to 1913. The research is intended to shed new light on a previously overlooked area of research, using gender theory and discourse analysis. Peterson-Berger and his work have not been examined previously from a gender theory perspective. The research shows that Peterson-Berger was influenced in large measure by the prevailing ideals of his time, although he was in some ways more innovative than many of his contemporaries. Around the turn of the 20th century there was a great deal of focus on biology, with a clear distinction drawn between femininity and masculinity[1] . Masculinity was held up as an ideal, in contrast to femininity and effeminacy. Peterson-Berger advocated this distinction, and emphasized the biological distinction between [2] masculinity and femininity. However, a man need not always have all the characteristics that were considered typically masculine for his time, nor was it necessary for a woman to possess all the feminine characteristics typical of the female gender. According to Peterson-Berger, a woman could have a masculine soul, and vice versa. And although he often took a negative view of women, he granted musical recognition to singers who realized music in what was, to him, a masculine way. Moreover, the majority of Peterson-Berger’s close friends were women, and he dedicated many of his works to women. Theories of race and human evolution were circulating at the turn of the century, and clearly influenced Peterson-Berger. This study has shown that he pursued the writings of [3] Chamberlain[4] and Nietzsche. Incorporating elements of old Gothicist theories with ideas from the two aforementioned thinkers, Peterson-Berger constructed his own racial theory. He asserted that all peoples originated from the Nordic region, which he believed to be the birthplace of the entire human race. According to his theory, southern peoples were inferior[5] , with one exception, the Greeks, towards whom he was very positively disposed. This had to do with the ancient music drama, which Peterson-Berger believed had been created by inhabitants from the north who had migrated to Greece. Peterson-Berger’s notions about peoples from the north versus peoples from the south were interwoven with theories of sexuality. He believed that Germanic peoples were more sexually abstemious than southern Europeans, and that peoples who lived in the south were sexually dissolute. To indulge one’s sexuality was, in his view, a character flaw. Conversely, Peterson-Berger viewed asexuality as a masculine ideal, and believed it to be more common in the north. A number of contradictions have emerged in his perceptions of race and sexuality. A number of his perceptions with respect to gender roles, sexuality, nationalism and philosophy[6] are portrayed in his opera Arnljot, as are the contradictions inherent in them. For instance, the character Arnljot has many of the typical masculine characteristics held up as ideal, but nevertheless exhibits both weaknesses and deficiencies. This is reflected in both the music and the opera libretto.
Wilhelm Peterson-Berger var en av de mest framstående tonsättarna kring sekelskiftet 1900. Han var inte bara kompositör utan även aktiv skribent i daglighetspressen. Många av hans uppfattningar om kön, nationalitet, filosofi och konst återspelglas i hans skriftställeri men kan även tydas i de musikaliska verken. Peterson-Berger var till stor del påverkad av dåtidens rådande ideal, men på vissa sätt var han mer nydanande än många andra i sin samtid. Omkring sekelskiftet sattes mycket fokus på biologi och en tydlig uppdelning gjordes mellan kvinnligt och manligt. Manlighet ställdes upp som ett ideal i kontrast till kvinnlighet och omanlighet. Peterson-Berger förespråkar en sådan uppdelning och gör skillnad mellan biologisk manlighet och kvinnlighet. Dock behöver inte alltid en man förfoga över egenskaper som ansågs tidstypiskt manliga eller en kvinna inneha endast de tidstypiska kvinnliga egenskaperna. Enligt honom kunde en kvinna vara innehavare av en manlig själ och vice versa. Peterson-Berger tangerade således en modern syn på kön som pekar fram mot dagens genus teorier. I Peterson-Bergers opera Arnljot konkretiseras flera av hans uppfattningar av både könsroller, sexualitet och filosofi – liksom de motsägelser som fanns. Karaktären Arnljot förfogar exempelvis över flera av de idealtypiska manliga egenskaperna men uppvisar trots det både svagheter och brister. Det återspeglas såväl i text som i musik. Peterson-Bergers egen sexualitet har upprepade gånger varit omdiskuterad. Knyter vi an till hans musikaliska verk och skriftställeri kommer vi närmare ett svar på hur det kan ha förhållit sig.

Abstract:

Ce travail présente une voie de synthèse courte d'androst-5-ènes modifiés au niveau de la position 11, peu réactive. Elle consiste premièrement en une addition de dérivés organométalliques (lithiens, magnésiens) à la cétone encombrée et énolisable libre de l'adrénostérone commerciale protégée. Cette addition se produit de préférence dans un solvant apolaire et ce résultat a été étendu à d'autres cétones encombrées et énolisables. Deuxièmement, des alcools tertiaires encombrés, découlant de cette première étape, ont été déoxygénés par voie radicalaire. Cette méthode ouvre la voie, pour la première fois et avec des rendements raisonnables, à des 11a et 11b-allyl-testostérones notamment. Cette séquence addition/déoxygénation est applicable au cas de dérivés aryles, alkyles, allyles et éthynyles. Finalement, la 11b-hydroxyméthyl-testostérone a été préparée par hydroboration-oxydation d'un dérivé 11-méthylidèn-androst-5-ène. Ce précurseur a été obtenu avec un excellent rendement par la réaction de Peterson. La voie de synthèse choisie a été ainsi menée à terme avec la préparation d'une première série de testostérones modifiées en 11 utilisables pour l'étude de leurs relations structure/activité. Ce travail a aussi été étendu à la chimie bioorganométallique.

The South African Postbank Limited has been tasked by Government with a social mandate to provide basic financial services to people receiving low income and people living in rural areas. Personal financial literacy is an essential element which affects financial inclusion in the target market of a state–owned bank. To achieve the bank?s social mandate and its objective, it would be vital to determine whether people in low income and rural demographics are financially literate. Financial literacy is defined as the ability to manage your money on a day–to–day basis, do future financial planning, choose sound financial products and have appropriate financial knowledge and understanding. Various factors influence the level of financial literacy of a person and in order to improve the financial literacy of a person, cognisance should be taken of that person?s age, gender, living conditions, income–level and socio–economic elements. It will be beneficial for a state–owned bank, in order to reach its social mandate, to implement financial educational programmes to increase financial literacy. The latter will increase the amount of potential customers and thus promote financial inclusion in the long run. The sample in low income and rural areas has been found to be the most wanting in financial literacy and therefore it is crucial to address this shortcoming in the target market of the state–owned bank in order to reach the social mandate of financial inclusion.

Abstract:

Den här uppsatsens syfte är att visa hur Folkmusikkommissionens arbete och utgivning av Svenska låtar påverkade tonsättare i Sverige. Folkmusikkommissionen samlade in folkmusik i Sverige i början av 1900-talet, de hade som mål att nå ut till tonsättare som skulle använda materialet och därmed skulle det spridas än mer. Hugo Alfvéns Dalarapsodi och Hilding Rosenbergs Svit över svenska låtar tas upp som exempel på verk med melodier som tidigare sagts varit hämtade ur Svenska låtar. Dessa analyseras så vi ser hur de använt låtmaterialet på varsitt sett. Wilhelm Peterson-Berger fungerar som motvikt till dessa tonsättare. Han använde sig inte av Svenska låtar men har skrivit mycket om musik och kan ge oss en bild av hans uppfattning om folkmusik och Folkmusikkommissionen. Peterson-Berger kritiserade urvalet av låtar i Svenska låtar och det kan vara en anledning till att han inte använde sig av dem. Han använde sällan befintliga melodier, detta kan också vara en del av förklaringen till att inte använda Svenska låtar. Det visar sig också att hans definition av begreppet 'folkmusik' är olik andra. Alfvén skriver tydliga harmonier och kadenser i sin musik medan Rosenberg skriver en polyfon sats där ackorden inte följer funktionsanalytiska mönster och inte alltid ens går att urskilja. Trots sina olikheter är de två tonsättarna lika i att de låter melodierna introduceras oförändrade innan de bearbetas. Att de är olika har sannolikt ökat chansen till spridning av materialet från Svenska låtar, vilket var vad Folkmusikkommissionen önskade.

Plusieurs composés de la famille des thiosucres (sulfoniums, thioxylopyranosides, thionucléosides) possèdent des propriétés biologiques intéressantes (anti-diabétique, anti-thrombotique ou anti-virale). Ces molécules représentent donc des cibles importantes pour la chimie thérapeutique et il est intéressant de mettre au point de nouvelles voies de synthèse permettant d’accéder facilement à des thiosucres originaux. Une nouvelle méthodologie efficace, conduisant en deux étapes, à des méthyl 1,5-dithio-pent-1-ènopyranosides et à des sulfoniums insaturés à partir d’aldofuranoses protégés, a été mise au point : une réaction d’oléfination de Peterson a d’abord permis d’accéder à des dithioacétals de cétène homologués d’un carbone par rapport au sucre de départ. L’étape suivante consiste en une cyclisation après une activation par un groupement triflate en présence d’une pyridine substituée en para et a permis de conduire directement aux thiosucres ou aux sulfoniums insaturés visés selon la quantité d’amine utilisée. Des méthyl 1,5-dithiopyranosides insaturés en position 1,2 ainsi que des sulfoniums insaturés ont ainsi été obtenus avec de bons rendements. D’autre part, les thiosucres insaturés précédemment obtenus présentant une fonction dithioacétal de cétène riche en réactivité, une fonctionnalisation en position 2 par réaction électrophile a ainsi pu être effectuée sur une molécule modèle et a conduit à des composés substitués en position 2. Par ailleurs, l’action de m-CPBA puis de méthyllithium a permis d’accéder à des thioglycals. Enfin, certains sulfoniums ont été déprotégés afin d’en évaluer les propriétés d’inhibition vis-à-vis de glycosidases
Several thiosugars (sulfoniums, thioxylopyranosides or thionucleosides) have shown interesting biological activities (anti-diabetic, anti-thrombotic or anti-viral). These compounds have become important targets for therapeutic chemistry, and the search for original thiosugars remains a challenging topic. A new and efficient strategy leading, in two steps, to methyl 1,5-dithio-pent-1-enopyranosides and unsaturated sulfoniums starting from protected aldofuranoses was developed. First, Peterson olefination gives ketene dithioacetal with a one carbon homologation. The next step involves cyclization, after activation by a triflate moiety in the presence of a substituted pyridine, and leads straight to unsaturated thiosugars and sulfoniums depending on the amount of amine introduced. Unsaturated methyl 1,5-dithiopyranosides as well as unsaturated sulfoniums were obtained in good yields. Moreover, these unsaturated thiosugars have a highly reactive ketene dithioacetal function. Functionalization in position 2 by electrophilic addition has been achieved on a model substrate and leads to 2 - substituted compounds. In addition, m-CPBA treatment followed by methyllithium addition lead to thioglycals. Finally, some sulfoniums were deprotected in order to evaluate glycosidase inhibition

The goal of this research is to compare performance of three analysis methods and three optimization methods for core-megacolumn-outrigger, or CMO skyscrapers. The three analysis methods include a 1D stick analysis, 2D frame analysis, and 3D finite element analysis. The three optimization methods include a trial and error optimization, optimality criteria optimization, and genetic algorithm. Each of these methods was compared by applying an example CMO skyscraper. The 1D stick analysis proved to be the most accurate when compared with the 3D finite element results. The genetic algorithm was recommended as the best optimization method in this research. The 1D stick method in this thesis introduces a new analysis involving an outrigger modification factor. The comparison of these optimization methods for skyscrapers has not been reported in the literature.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The missio Dei is understood as the initiative, movement and sending love of the triune God to the world for the purpose of establishing his kingdom. When the phrase “missional” is used within the context of the church, it describes a congregation that finds her identity within this theological framework, and understands that her calling lies in collaborating with the missio Dei. The human response to the missio Dei can be described by the concept “spirituality”. Trends within the macro-context of our time show spirituality is subject to subjective interpretation. It is therefore necessary to define and frame Christian spirituality within the context of faith, and more specifically, within the context of missional theology. For this reason this study poses the following research question: What is the essence and nature of missional spirituality? What would a spirituality that uses the missio Dei as its theological epistemological core look like? The study found that the essence of missional spirituality lies therein that the initiative of man’s search for and connection to God, belongs to God himself. The Trinity provides the landscape in which missional spirituality can be described and understood. Missional spirituality insists, though, that a believer’s knowledge of God (theology) is meant to be fully embraced in life as response to God (spirituality). It thus invites a believer towards participation in the missio Dei, within the following three spheres: - A process of spiritual formation: God takes the initiative in the salvation of man and restores Him, through the atonement of Christ, to a relationship with Him. God further invites and enables the believer in becoming a participant in a process of spiritual formation, which is meant to impact his life holistically. A way of life, characterised by faith and love, becomes the measure of an adequate response to the missio Dei. - A community of faith: God also takes the initiative in the formation of a faith community. Communion with Christ assumes communion with the body of Christ. Missional spirituality invites believers towards mutual relationships within the community of faith that strives towards reflecting the unity and love of the Trinity. - Social transformation: It is distinctive of missional spirituality that God takes the initiative in the transformation of society. There is an underlying connection between the agenda of God’s kingdom and the transformation of reality. A call to Christ involves believers in a call towards social transformation, incarnate to the conditions of time and place. The study shows that a reciprocal interiority exists between these spheres of participation, which is characteristic to missional spirituality. The embrace thereof opens the door to the believer towards finding meaning in life. A believer can further his participation in the missio Dei by engaging in spiritual practices, which grows his capacity for a greater awareness of God’s movement and the discernment of his will.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die missio Dei word verstaan as die inisiatief, beweging en gestuurdheid van die Drie-enige God na die wêreld met die oog op die vestiging van sy koninkryk. “Missionaal” is ’n term wat gebruik word om aan te dui dat ’n gemeente haar roeping as medewerker van die missio Dei verstaan en haar identiteit binne hierdie teologiese raamwerk vind. Die menslike respons op die missio Dei kan beskryf word deur die begrip “spiritualiteit”. Tendense binne die makro-konteks van ons tyd dui aan spiritualiteit word onderwerp aan subjektiewe interpretasie. Dit is daarom nodig om Christelike spiritualiteit te definieer en te begrens binne die konteks van geloof, en meer spesifiek, binne die konteks van missionale teologie. Hierdie studie werk dus met die volgende navorsingsvraag: Wat is die aard en karakter van missionale spiritualiteit? Hoe lyk ’n spiritualiteit wat vertrek vanuit die missio Dei as teologiese epistemologiese basis? Die studie het bevind dat die hart van missionale spiritualiteit daarin lê dat die inisiatief van ’n mens se soeke na en verhouding met God, by God self lê. Die Drie-eenheid bied die landskap waarbinne missionale spiritualiteit beskryf en verstaan kan word. Missionale spiritualiteit dring egter daarop aan dat ’n gelowige se kennis van God (teologie) bedoel is om ten volle omhels te word binne die lewe as respons tot God (spiritualiteit). Daarom nooi dit ’n gelowige tot deelname aan die missio Dei op drie terreine: - ’n Proses van geloofsvorming: God neem die inisiatief in die verlossing van die mens en herstel hom, deur die versoeningswerk van Christus, in ’n verhouding met Hom. Abstract:

(1) Reliable measures of population abundance are essential for managing wildlife effectively. Aerial surveys provide a rapid and efficient means of surveying large mammals and many techniques have been developed to adjust for the inability to count all animals within transects. The probability of detection varies according to a range of factors which are important to consider when estimating density. Standardised survey methods developed in flat country are not readily transferable to steep terrain due to safety, access and difficulties delineating transect widths. Other methods have logistic constraints and must adhere to various other assumptions. (2) Density estimators are seldom examined using actual population size, hence their ability to correct for true bias is unknown. Studies that compare techniques are difficult to interpret because of the uncertainty of adherence to their respective assumptions. Factors influencing detection probability, estimators that correct for bias, the validity of their assumptions and how these relate to true density are important considerations for selecting suitable methods. The aim of this study was to obtain accurate and reliable methods for estimating the density of feral goats by improving predictions of detection probability, investigating the assumptions of aerial surveys, and examining the accuracy of 15 density estimators by comparing with total counts of feral goats. (3) Group size, vegetation and observer were the most important factors influencing the probability of observing a group of goats during aerial surveys. However, different approaches to analysing these data influenced the significance of variables and the predicted probabilities. Goat colour, type of helicopter, site and rear observer experience in hours were also found to be significant (P<0.05) when using likelihood equations based on all animals in the population rather than only those in the sample. The slope of the terrain was also shown to significantly (P=0.014) affect the probability of detection. (4) Indices are commonly used in wildlife management for their simplicity and practicality, but their validity has been questioned because of variable probability of detection. Results of this study suggest aerial survey indices are useful in monitoring a range of medium-sized mammal species across space and time if differences in detection probability between species, group size, vegetation and observer are considered and their effects are standardised. (5) An assumption of most sampling regimes that is fundamental but rarely examined is that animals are not counted more than once. In this study the behavioural responses of feral goats to helicopters were investigated as a basis for estimating the probability that goats were recounted. No long-term consequences were evident in feral goat behaviour of responses to helicopters. However, helicopter surveys were found to alter the structure of 42% of groups observed, with 28% of groups merging with others and 14% splitting into separate groups. Therefore, group size estimated from the air should not be considered as biologically important, and when estimating density, researchers should also avoid using group sizes determined from independent ground observations to correct group sizes determined from aerial surveys. Goats were also more likely to flush further when helicopters were within 150 m, which is close to or within standard helicopter strip widths. Substantial movement occurred between transects and 21% of goats were estimated to be available for recounting in adjacent transects. (6) Different detection probabilities between groups of goats may be particularly relevant when using double-counting, where multiple observers are �capturing� and �recapturing� animals in the same instant. Many analyses test and adjust for this �unequal catchability� assumption in different ways, with the approaches of Huggins and Alho allowing prediction of unique probability values for a range of co-variates. The approach of Chao attempts to correct for skewed distributions in small samples. The Horvitz-Thompson approach provides a useful basis for estimating abundance (or density) when detection probability can be estimated and is known to vary between observations according to a range of independent variables, and also avoids errors associated with averaging group size. (7) After correcting for recounting, the Alho estimator applied to helicopter surveys was the most accurate (Bias = 0.02) and reliable of all techniques, which suggests that estimates were improved by taking into account unconditional detection probability and correcting individual observations according to their characteristics. The positive bias evident in the Chao (Bias = 0.28) and Petersen (Bias = 0.15) aerial survey estimators may have been a result of averaging detection probability across all observations. The inconsistency and inaccuracy of the ground-based area-count technique emphasises the importance of other assumptions in density estimation, such as representative sampling and availability bias. The accuracy of index-manipulation-index techniques was dependent on the indices used. Capture-recapture estimates using mustering showed slight negative bias (Bias = -0.08), which was likely a result of increased probability of re-capture (i.e. trap happy). Ground-based capture-resight estimates were labour intensive and positively biased (Bias = 0.13), likely due to underestimating the area sampled, or overestimating the number of unmarked individuals with each sample. (8) Helicopter survey using double-counting is recommended for estimating the density of feral goats in steep terrain. However, consideration of recounting under intensive sampling regimes and adjustments for the factors that influence unconditional detection probability is required.

Abstract:

In this thesis I will describe the process of working with a piano trio. The trio consisted of Jonny Ek on piano, Uno Dvärby on bass and, me, Jakob Bylund on drums. This process included choosing musicians, studying influences, rehearsing, and the selecting and arranging songs. I will also reflect on my role as the drummer and band leader of the trio. The main purpose was to investigate what happens to a trio that does not only rehearse often, but also puts in a lot of work in to studying their role models, such as Oscar Peterson trio and Ahmad Jamal trio, by listening and transcribing arrangements played by them. By using these methods, the trio hoped to achieve a greater understanding of what these references were actually playing, and using that knowledge to develop its own interplay, dynamics and sound. The impact of role models is analyzed by comparing the Oscar Peterson trio and Ahmad Jamal trio to each other, and to my own trio, finding the uniqueness of each group as well as the similarities between them. During this project I have learned a lot as a drummer, arranger and band leader. Because of our many rehearsals and the way we studied our role models, I have gained a deeper understanding of my tendencies when drumming. I’ve also learned that the drummer in a piano trio could determine the direction of the music with very subtle but efficient ways, and therefore has a lot of power and responsibility to take care of the music. Denna kandidatuppsats består av en egen översättning från engelska till svenska av första kapitlet från författaren Jesse Lee Petersons verk From Rage to Responsibility: Black Conservative Jesse Lee Peterson and America Today. Uppsatsen består dessutom av en källtextanalys samt översättningskommentarer som exemplifierar och diskuterar översättarens tillvägagångssätt i att åstadkomma en översättning som uppnår dess syfte. Syftet har primärt varit att överföra källtextinnehållet till måltexten och den djupare förståelse som förmedlas relaterat till ilska, självinsikt, förlåtelse och ansvar, på ett sätt som samtidigt bevarar författarstilen i möjligaste mån. Detta inkluderar en överföring av författarens lättsamma stil och användning av verbala och talspråkliga drag, idiom och kulturreferenser, samt en anpassning av syntax. För att åstadkomma detta har framförallt översättningsteorier och begrepp från Benjamin Walter och Theo Hermans tillämpats under översättningsprocessen och i översättningskommentarerna.
This essay is based on my own translation of the first chapter of author Jesse Lee Peterson’s work From Rage to Responsibility: Black Conservative Jesse Lee Peterson and America Today, in the language pair English to Swedish. The essay also includes a source text analysis, as well as a commentary on my own translation, where the translator’s approach in achieving a target text that accomplishes its aim is discussed and exemplified. The aim has primarily been to transfer the source text’s ideational core to the target text and the deeper understanding that is being conveyed, regarding rage, insight, forgiveness and responsibility, in an equivalent manner which stays faithful to the style of the author, to the extent that is considered possible. This includes the transference of the author’s cultural references, easy going and simple stylistic approach, along with the informal and colloquial language use, as well as a syntactic target language adaptation. To achieve this, the ideas and terms from the translation theorists Benjamin Walter and Theo Hermans have been applied during the translation process and in the commentary.

La première partie de ce travail est consacrée à la synthèse d'une nouvelle série d'énamines α-phosphoniques réalisee in situ selon une réaction de type Peterson à partir d'α-aminophosphonates. Ces énamines α-phosphoniques ont donné accès à une nouvelle série d'acides α-aminophosphoniques dérivés de la pipéridine et de la morpholine. En diversifiant la fonction amine des α-aminophosphonates de départ, il a été possible d'obtenir un acide α-aminophosphonique possédant une fonction amine primaire, selon la séquence réactionnelle suivante: métallation, condensation, réduction, déprotection et hydrolyse. Enfin, a partir des énamines dérivées de la pipéridine et de la morpholine, nous avons obtenu une nouvelle série d'énamines -bromées. La seconde partie de ce travail est consacrée à la synthèse de phosphonates allyliques fonctionnels tels que les α-hydroxycinnamylphosphonates, les γ-chlorocinnamylphosphonates et les γ-azidocinnamylphosphonates. A partir des γ-chlorocinnamylphosphonates, nous avons eu accès, selon une réaction de Wittig-Horner, à une série de diènes chlorés diversement substitués. The aim of this thesis is to study, understand and explain the theories and work of the Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson, whose controversial statements and lectures have made him a darling of certain factions of the political right, as he portrays himself as an enemy of progressive ideology. With a focus on understanding and explaining Peterson and how he provides meaning to his followers, the study will go through Peterson’s work in his two books Maps of Meaning and 12 Rules for Life in order to analyze their content and the follower’s reaction to the books as well as Peterson’s persona as a whole. To analyze these works, hermeneutic methods based on the work of finnish theologian Björn Vikström will be utilized. The texts will be analyzed on a textual and intertextual level, but the role of the author as well as the readers will also be put under scrutiny in order to elaborate on many aspects of Peterson’s writing. To analyze how he provides meaning to his followers and the definition of the terms lifestance and meaning, the work of Swedish theologian Carl Reinhold Bråkenhielm will be referenced and compared to Peterson’s work. While Vikström and Bråkenhielm will be the main sources of intertextual comparison with Jordan Peterson, they will also be supplemented with the work of other established theologians such as Hjalmar Sundén and others to further understand and compare the making of meaning undertaken by Jordan Peterson to other academic studies in the field of making meaning.

Inoltre, avendo studiato la grammatica Dothraki (descritta in un capitolo a parte), è stato possibile analizzare due frasi tratte da due episodi della serie televisiva.

Abstract:

Friction Bit Joining (FBJ) is a new technology that allows lightweight metals to be joined to advanced high-strength steels (AHSS). Joining of dissimilar metals is especially beneficial to the automotive industry because of the desire to use materials such as aluminum and AHSS in order to reduce weight and increase fuel efficiency. In this study, FBJ was used to join 7075 aluminum and DP980 ultra-high-strength steel. FBJ is a two-stage process using a consumable bit. In the first stage, the bit cuts through the top material (aluminum), and in the second stage the bit is friction welded to the base material (steel). The purpose of the research was to examine the impact a solid head bit design would have on joint strength, manufacturability, and ease of automation. The solid head design was driven externally. This design was compared to a previous internally driven head design. Joint strength was assessed according to an automotive standard established by Honda. Joints were mechanically tested in lap-shear tension, cross-tension, and peel configurations. Joints were also fatigue tested, cycling between loads of 100 N and 750 N. The failure modes that joints could experience during testing include: head, nugget, material, or interfacial failure. All tested specimens in this research experienced interfacial failure. Welds were also created and examined under a microscope in order to validate a simulation model of the FBJ process. The simulation model predicted a similar weld shape and bond length with 5 percent accuracy. Joints made with external bits demonstrated comparable joint strength to internal bits in lap-shear tension and cross-tension testing. Only external bits were tested after lap-shear tension, because it was determined that external bits would perform comparably to internal bits. Joints made with external bits also exceeded the standard for failure during fatigue testing. Peel tested specimens did not meet the required strength for the automotive standard. Examining specimens under a microscope revealed micro-cracks in the weld. These defects have been shown to decrease joint strength. Joint strength, especially during peel testing, could be increased by reducing the presence of micro-cracks. The external bit design is an improvement from the internal bits for manufacturability and ability to be automated, because of the less-expensive processes used to form the bit heads and the design that lends to ease of alignment.

This work is an adaptation of Peterson, Ekici and Hunt (2010) research to Brazilian context. Its main objective was to investigate the influence of Consumer Trust and Consumer Attitude constructs in Business Contribution to My QOL construct. According to previous investigations, in economic development context similar to Brazilian, the Business Contribution to My QOL is a mediator construct among the first order construct QOL and second order constructs Consumer Trust and Consumer Attitude. The objective of this work was achieved through two steps: (1) the adaptation and validation of original scale, to the Brazilian reality and (2) the validation of the structural model using structural equation modeling. The scale adaptation was performed through twelve in-depth interviews, conducted between consumers and professionals related to marketing. As result, variables relevant to the Brazilian context were added to the original scale. The scale was verified through the techniques of Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). A positive mediation was found between Business Contribution to My QOL and QOL constructs in the structural model. The relationship between Consumer Attitude construct and My QOL construct was negative. These relationships were similar to those found in the original study proposed by Peterson, Ekici and Hunt (2010).
Essa pesquisa realizou uma adaptação do estudo de Peterson, Ekici e Hunt (2010) ao contexto brasileiro. Seu principal objetivo foi investigar o papel da confiança e da atitude do consumidor na percepção da contribuição do marketing na qualidade de vida. Segundo investigações prévias, em contextos de desenvolvimento econômico similares ao brasileiro, o construto percepção da contribuição do marketing para a qualidade de vida é mediador entre o construto de primeira ordem qualidade de vida e os construtos de segunda ordem atitude e confiança do consumidor. O objetivo deste trabalho foi atingido após a operacionalização de duas etapas: (1) a adaptação e validação da escala, originalmente utilizada, à realidade brasileira e (2) a validação do modelo estrutural através da técnica de modelagem de equações estruturais. A adaptação da escala foi possível através da efetivação de doze entrevistas em profundidade, realizadas entre consumidores e profissionais ligados ao marketing, onde se agregou à escala original variáveis pertinentes ao contexto brasileiro. A escala foi verificada e validada através das técnicas de análise fatorial e análise fatorial confirmatória (CFA). O modelo estrutural apresentou relação positiva de mediação do construto “contribuição do marketing para a minha qualidade de vida”, entre a confiança do consumidor e a qualidade de vida. Já a relação de mediação do construto entre a atitude do consumidor e qualidade de vida, apresentou relação inversa. Essas relações foram similares às encontradas no estudo original.

Abstract:

Fiskfaunan i Ekeby våtmark inventerades med hjälp av två metoder, fångst-återfångst och nätprovfiske, som i möjligaste mån använde metodiken vid standardiserat provfiske. Med fångst-återfångst metoden fångade jag sutare, abborre och småspigg, dock var fångsten av abborre och småspigg så liten att det inte kunde göras någon uppskattning av dessa populationsstorlekar. Uppskattningen av sutarnas populationsstorlek i damm 8 erhölls efter ett antal fångst och märkningstillfällen tills det fanns tillräckligt stor andel återfångst av sutare. De mjärdar som användes kunde bara fånga fisk av ett visst storleksintervall (35-120 mm) vilket troligtvis betyder att det enbart fångades 1- och 2-åriga sutare. Min uppskattning av antalet individer i populationen sutare (Lincoln Index) blev 1316 +/- 1127. Det insamlade materialet från nätprovfisket jämfördes med Fiskeriverkets referensmaterial. Den infångade fisken vägdes och mättes enligt den standardiserade metoden för provfiske. Fiskarnas kondition kalkylerades som Fultons konditionsindex. Konditionen hos abborre och mört var signifikant högre i Ekeby våtmark jämfört med referensvärdena. Hos abborre fanns signifikanta skillnader i längd och vikt, som var högre i damm 8 än i damm 6, men ingen signifikant skillnad i kondition mellan dammarna. Hos mört fanns det liknande signifikanta skillnader mellan dammarna, där längd och vikt var högre i damm 8 än i damm 6, men här är även skillnaden i kondition signifikant, då den var högre i damm 8 än i damm 6. Uppgifter från referensmaterialet användes för att bedöma åldersklasser i mitt material. Vid nätfångsten påträffades en anmärkningsvärt rik förekomst av en typ av parasit som observerades som svarta fläckar på mört och sarv. Parasiteringsgrad, d v s antal svarta fläckar, var korrelerad med fiskens vikt och totallängd, vilket var signifikant hos mört (p<0.01)
