Abstract:
Cette thèse propose une étude comparative des œuvres de Pierre Bergounioux et de Peter Kurzeck. Il s’agit d’interroger la relation entre les réalités socioculturelles, géographiques et historiques des régions d’enfance des auteurs et le contexte de l’extrême contemporain, qui tend à l’uniformisation du monde. Le microcosme du lieu d’origine, ancré dans un terroir qui engendre des traits culturels et langagiers locaux, se lit comme un lieu universel. Ce dernier, bien que localisé géographiquement et précisément nommé, devient l’endroit réel et figuré d’un état désormais révolu de l’humanité qui s’oppose à un autre lieu universel : le non-lieu standardisé. Il s’agira de confronter les vertus élémentaires de la mémoire longue aux traits caractéristiques de l’époque surmoderne, c’est-à-dire l’homogénéisation de l’espace, l’accélération du temps et l’individualisme croissant. La réalité surmoderne semble se trouver au-dessus des facultés cognitives de l’homme, qui peine à ordonner les données instables de celle-ci. La construction du sujet autobiographique doit donc faire face aux derniers archaïsmes, ainsi qu’à la « liberté périlleuse » (U. Beck) d’une existence détachée de l’origine. L’écriture mémorielle assure tour à tour la continuité du sujet, œuvre en faveur de la communauté perdue et tente de livrer, à travers un passé revisité, une analyse lucide du monde contemporain qui s’adresse à un lecteur perdu. En reproduisant le flottement de la mémoire entre souvenir et oubli, l’écrit littéraire se pense comme une contre-proposition face à la « mondialisation de la mémoire » (H. Rousso) qui engendre un rapport similaire au passé, celui, paradoxal, d’un oubli accéléré et d’une nostalgie excessive
This thesis offers a comparative study of the works of Pierre Bergounioux and Peter Kurzeck. Its aim is to question the relationship between the sociocultural, geographical and historical features of the regions where these writers spent their respective childhoods and the context of the “extreme contemporary”, which tends towards a standardisation of the world. The microcosm of the place of origin, rooted in a local setting which goes hand in hand with a set of local cultural and linguistic elements, is depicted as a universal place. This place, albeit geographically localised and specifically named, becomes both literally and figuratively the location of a now bygone state of mankind which clashes with another universal place: the standardised “non-place”. This study will bring face to face the fundamental virtues of long-term historical memory and the distinctive features of the “supermodern” period, that is to say homogenisation of space, acceleration of time and growing individualism. The supermodern reality seems to be located above the cognitive faculties of human beings, who have trouble putting its unstable data in order. The construction of the autobiographical subject therefore has to face the last remaining archaisms, as well as the “hazardous freedom” (U. Beck) of an existence cut from its origin. The writing of memory successively allows for a continuity of the subject, works in favour of the lost community, and tries to provide the bewildered reader with a sound analysis of the contemporary world by revisiting the past. By reproducing the wavering of memory between remembrance and forgetfulness, literary writing envisions itself as a counter-proposition to the “globalisation of memory” (H. Rousso) which brings about a similar, paradoxical relationship to the past, characterised by accelerated forgetfulness and excessive nostalgia

Place-defining novelists convey regional imagery and regional sense of place to a wide audience, thus shaping popular perceptions of regions. Peter Mayle and Pierre Magnan are the most recent place-defining novelists of Provence, France. This research compares each author’s regional imagery and sense of place to understand what it means for each author to be in Provence. Place-name mapping geographically frames each authors’ regional imagery and sense of place. Qualitative coding and close readings of selected texts for each author identify sets of regional imagery, including nature and culture imagery, which help develop a sense of place for Provence. The subjectivities of qualitative coding analysis is addressed through personal narratives which acknowledges the researcher’s positionality vis-à-vis Provence. Mayle’s nature imagery emphasizes remote, rough topography and bright sunny skies, which presents the natural landscape as benevolent and therapeutic. Magnan’s nature imagery emphasizes rough topography, rivers, winds, and storms, which presents the natural landscape as powerful, indifferent or malevolent towards human affairs, and imbued with a sense of deep time and an enigmatic quality. Mayle’s culture imagery emphasizes healthy, traditional agrarian lifeways; vibrant village life and social connectedness; a positive and prominent tourist industry; and a food culture which permeates Provençal identity. Magnan’s culture imagery emphasizes the harsh realities of agrarian lifestyles; insular and mistrusting villages; hard and frugal villagers; historical continuity; and references to ruined or abandoned landscapes and cultural loss. Mayle’s sense of place defines Provence as a region defined as idyllic, most strongly developed by his culture imagery which emphasizes idealized agrarian lifeways and Provence’s food culture. This idyll is deepened with the positive associations with Provence’s tourist industry. Magnan’s sense of place defines Provence as a region defined by a melancholic sublime. His powerful, enigmatic nature imagery is the strongest shaping force behind developing Provence’s sublime qualities. Provence’s melancholic quality is linked to Magnan’s nature imagery’s enigmatic characteristics, which invite contemplation, and his culture imagery associated with ruins and cultural loss, which offers further invitation to contemplation and conveys a sense of grief.

La trace peut être définie comme le vestige sensible qui provoque, chez qui l’observe, le trouble d’une présence-absence. Les récits d’Antonio Tabucchi, Peter Handke et Pierre Péju,trois écrivains nés dans les années 1940 dans des pays – l’Italie, l’Autriche et la France – ayant collaboré avec l’Allemagne nazie, sont habités d’une inquiétude aussi bien historique qu’ontologique et déclinent les modalités d’une représentation de la présence spectrale. Le caractère spectral du réel n’implique pas seulement le sentiment d’une douloureuse dépossession, mais aussi l’ouverture à un monde vécu dans le mouvement même de son apparition. Celui-ci se manifeste tour à tour comme une épiphanie, révélation d’un avènement originel, et comme un retour des spectres du passé, et plus particulièrement de ceux de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. L’œuvre-trace transmet ainsi – par ses thèmes, sa diégèse et ses choix stylistiques – une injonction éthique. Elle se fait l’écho d’une double responsabilité :celle, historique, des cendres du XXe siècle et celle, ontologique, de la fidélité à un présents cindé, qui ne peut être appréhendé qu’à travers la faille qui le constitue. L’oeuvre-trace se fait représentation littéraire d’un jeu interstitiel : blessure qui ne peut cicatriser et condition même de l’à venir ; et la quête heuristique, en refusant toute assertion, rejoint la démarche de la philosophie sceptique. The trace can be defined as the tangible relic which provokes confusion in theobserver’s mind by revealing a form of absent presence. The narratives of Antonio Tabucchi,Peter Handke and Pierre Péju, three writers born in the 1940s in countries – Italy, Austria and France – that collaborated with Nazi Germany, are filled with an anxiety which is historical aswell as it is ontological, and display the various forms of the spectral presence of the trace. Butthis spectral presence, which classically entails a distressing feeling of dispossession, also manifests the emergence of a new world which is physically perceived as it reveals itself. It is successively an epiphany, the revelation of an original advent, and the return of past spectres,and more particularly those of the Second World War. Through its themes, diegesis and stylisticchoices, the narrative as trace thus conveys an ethical injunction. It discloses the importance of atwofold responsibility: the historical legacy of the 20thcentury’s ashes, and the ontologicalrequest of accepting a present without certainty, that can only be apprehended through the verybreach that constitutes it. The narrative as trace thereby becomes the literary representation of asplit state of being, everlastingly wounded and ultimate condition of the coming future; and the heuristic pursuit, by rejecting any possibilities of assertion, concurs with the reasoning ofsceptical philosophy. L'ambition qui préside à l'élaboration de ce travail est double : d'abord confronter une lecture précise de Kropotkine (1842-1921) à ce qu'en dit le post-anarchisme, lequel se fait fort de renouveler la compréhension de l'anarchisme à l'aide des outils légués par les auteurs post-modernes français ; ensuite reprendre le dossier de l'antinaturalisme dans la critique sociale. Nous soutenons dans cette thèse que loin de manifester une impasse pour tout discours qui voudrait dessiner les voies d'un changement radical de société, la notion de " nature humaine " telle que l'emploie Kropotkine offre de nombreux outils pour œuvrer dans cette direction. À la fois géographe et évolutionniste, Kropotkine ouvre la nature humaine en direction de la nature globale, et plus précisément du legs coopératif de l'évolution des espèces, à l'inverse de toute crispation essentialiste. C'est sur ce legs sans cesse retravaillé en fonction des contextes dans lesquels l'humain est conduit à vivre qu'il convient de s'appuyer pour contrer les effets de réductionnismes ruineux tels que le darwinisme social ou la sociobiologie. Conformément à la dimension fondationnaliste de la pensée de Kropotkine, la thèse s'organise de manière systématique autour de la notion de " nature humaine ". Après avoir posé les bases scientifiques de l'anarchie (I) nous travaillons les thèmes darwiniens de l'œuvre kropotkinienne (II). Le socle théorique est alors consistant afin d'établir des conséquences pratiques, du côté de la politique, de l'économie et de l'urbanisme (III). À l'intérieur du contexte ainsi défini, c'est aux réalisations supérieures de la morale et de l'art que nous finissons par nous intéresser (IV).

En étudiant le cas du photographe Peter Henry Emerson (1856-1936) à partir du discours tenu par les historiens de la photographie sur son principal traité (Naturalistic Photography) et sur son oeuvre, cette thèse vise non seulement à montrer la pertinence d'une approche sociale de 1'histoire de la photographie, mais à faire état de 1'importance des travaux du sociologue Pierre Bourdieu pour les fondements théoriques d'un tel type d'approche. En effet, des théories comme la division du domaine artistique à partir du dix-neuvième siècle en deux secteurs d'activités (champ de production restreinte et champ de grande production), la surdétermination des oeuvres d'art ainsi que 1'inégalité des compétences artistiques entre les couches sociales remettent en cause les rapports généralement posés entre la photographie à des fins artistiques et la société et entraînent une redéfinition de l'objet de 1'histoire sociale de la photographie. Redéfinition non sans conséquences sur 1'analyse des oeuvres et des écrits des photographes. En procédant dans 1'optique des travaux de Bourdieu, 1'analyse sociale des oeuvres photographiques de P.H. Emerson ne consiste plus à déterminer en quoi le contenu et la forme de ces oeuvres trahissent la vision d'un groupe en particulier. Elle vise, au contraire, à mettre en évidence comment ce n'est pas à 1'intérieur des oeuvres mais à 1'extérieur d'elles que l'impact du social se fait sentir, dans leurs liens avec l'univers de la production et 1'univers de la consommation, c'est-à-dire avec les autres types de production photographique et les conceptions esthétiques en présence parmi le public. En ce qui a trait à 1'analyse des écrits, 1'application des idées du sociologue français est non moins novatrice. Plus qu'une analyse de contenu cherchant à cerner 1'intentionnalité d'Emerson, et de là son idéologie, l'étude du traité Naturalistic Photography tend à établir comment les propos du photographe traduisent sa situation dans le milieu de la photographie. Autrement dit, 1'analyse de Naturalistic Photography est 1'occasion d'établir les principaux paramètres en vertu desquels s'élabore la pratique du photographe. Ainsi, c'est à une toute autre conception de 1'histoire sociale de la photographie que nous convient les travaux de Pierre Bour— dieu. Une toute autre conception qui permet, croyons-nous, à 1'historien d'assumer pleinement le rôle "critique" qui doit être le sien dans la société: mieux comprendre le passé afin d'aider à mieux agir sur le présent.

Dutch composer Peter Schat’s (1935-2003) pursuit of a compositional system that could generate and preserve intervallic relationships, while allowing the composer as much flexibility as possible to manipulate musical material, led him to develop the tone-clock system. Fundamentally comprised of the twelve possible trichords, the tone clock permits each to generate a complete twelve-tone series through the “steering” principle, a concept traced to Boulez’s technique of pitch-class set multiplication. This study serves as an overview of Schat’s tone-clock system and focuses primarily on the effects of the steering function in “Genen” (2000). Furthermore, I expand on the tone-clock system by combining transformational theory with Julian Hook’s uniform triadic transformations and my proposed STEER and STEERS functions, which express the procedures of the steering principle as a mathematical formula. S’intéresser à la place de l’Islam dans les propagandes politiques du règne de Pierre Ier de Castille (1350-1369) amène à s’interroger sur les paradoxes et ambiguïtés du rapport à l’Autre. L’Islam désigne ici différents objets ; le terme fait référence à la fois à la puissance politique et militaire des Nasrides et Mérinides, et à un ensemble religieux et culturel. Leur instrumentalisation dans diverses formes de propagande, textuelles et architecturales, a pour but de renforcer le pouvoir de l’initiateur de cette propagande. La mise en lumière des diverses modalités de cette instrumentalisation permettra de questionner et reconsidérer la frontière politique, religieuse et culturelle dans la péninsule ibérique du XIVe siècle. L’exemple du règne de Pierre Ier montre à quel point la frontière avec l’Autre est mouvante et évanescente, et son renforcement ou son amenuisement dépend des intérêts politiques en jeu, des rapports de force, de la motivation des acteurs ou encore de différents types de convergence qui ont rendu possible l’intégration et l’assimilation de formes et de concepts artistiques, politiques et littéraires. En confrontant les types de sources et les points de vue, on pourra mieux saisir, dans son ensemble et sa complexité, le rapport excluant ou incluant que les chrétiens entretiennent avec l’Islam, tant dans leurs pratiques politiques que dans leurs représentations symboliques. En effet, l’Islam est utilisé comme une altérité tantôt positive, tantôt négative, mais il cesse parfois aussi de représenter une forme d’altérité. Ce rapport dialectique renvoie à la problématique de la place qu’occupe l’Islam dans la formation de la culture castillane ainsi que dans la construction de l’État Moderne
Exploring the place of Islam in the political propagandas during the reign of Peter of Castile (1350-1369) leads to questioning the paradoxical and ambiguous aspects of an approach to Otherness. Islam here refers to various items: the political and military power of the Nasrids and the Merinids, as well as a religious and cultural body. The instrumentalization of these items through various forms of propaganda, either textual or architectural, aims at reinforcing the power of their initiator(s). Bringing out the various modalities of this instrumentalization will allow us to question and reconsider the political, religious and cultural frontier in the 14th century Iberian Peninsula. The example of the reign of Peter of Castile shows how shifting and ephemeral the frontier with Otherness can be, and its strengthening or its dwindling depends on the political interests at stake, the balance of power, the motivation of the protagonists as well as the different types of convergence which have allowed the integration and the assimilation of artistic, political and literary patterns and concepts. By confronting the various types of sources and points of view, it will be easier to fully understand, in its entirety and complexity, the either excluding or including relationship that the Christians have with Islam, both in their political practices and in their symbolic representations. Indeed, Islam is utilized as a form of otherness which is sometimes positive, sometimes negative, but it also occasionally ceases being viewed as such. This dialectical connection is closely linked to the part that Islam has played in the formation of Castilian culture as well as in the construction of Modern State

Une étude synoptique systématique la met en évidence ; pour autant, chaque lettre possède sa propre architecture ; confronter ces deux démarches, moyennant une méthodologie spécifique, permet d’établir que 2-Pierre dépend de Jude. D’une lettre à l’autre, un autre problème s’est fait jour : quid de la (seconde) parousie de Christ ? « Pierre » opère un puissant travail de réécriture et, conjointement, élabore une théologie originale de l’inspiration. Si les deux textes ont choisi la forme épistolaire « catholique », et testamentaire pour 2-Pierre, Jude suit un modèle oraculaire, quand 2-Pierre adopte le genre « disputation speech ». La mise en intrigue des rapports entre les deux lettres permet d’esquisser des trajectoires théologiques. Parallelisms between Jude and 2-Peter outline an almost perfect framework, to reply to the problem of those who “deny the Master”. A framework seen through a systematical synoptic study ; however, each epistle possesses its own architecture ; confronting these two steps allows to establish that 2-Peter depends on Jude. From one letter to the other, a second problem appears : what can be said of the (second) Parousia of Christ ? “Peter” demonstrates a great deal of rewriting, and, jointly, elaborates an original theology of inspiration. If the two texts chose the “catholic” epistolary form, and 2-Peter a testamentary one, Jude follows an oracular pattern, while 2-Peter assume the “disputation speech” genre. The plotting of the relation between the two letters alows us to sketch theological trajectories. In particular, in response to the second problem, 2-Peter puts forward original hermeneutical principles ; it is probably an anti-millenarist work, a privileged testimony and an important actor of the current proto-canonisation process. For that very reason, 2-Peter leans on a “high christology”

Premièrement, la thèse analyse une solution réaliste au problème des universaux datant du début du XIIe siècle et que l’on nomme ici ‘théorie de l’indiuiduum’ (= ThI; aussi connue sous les noms de ‘théorie de l’indifférence’, ‘théorie du status’, ‘deuxième théorie de la collectio’ etc.). Selon ThI, l’universel est l’individu lui-même dans l’un de ses status. ThI utilise en outre des éléments abélardiens pour une solution tout à fait opposée à celle d’Abélard. ThI est ici étudiée dans le cadre d’une analyse des solutions réalistes au problème des universaux présentées par cinq sources : la Logica ‘Ingredientibus’ d’Abélard, la Logica ‘Nostrorum’, le ‘De generibus et speciebus’ (qu’on cite à partir d’une transcription directe du ms. Orléans, BM, 266, pp. 154b-163a), le traité ‘Quoniam de generali’ et le commentaire inédit ‘P17’ à l’Isagoge du ms. Paris, BnF, lat. 3237, ff. 123ra–124va et 125ra–130rb. This research project has two main objectives. First, its aim is to study a realist solution to the problem of universals from the early 12th century. This is called the indiuiduum-theory (=IndT; previous denominations include: indifference-theory, status-theory, second collectio-theory, etc.). IndT claims the universal to be a thing (res); in fact, it claims the universal to be the individual thing itself in one of its states (status). It makes use of some key notions of Abelard’s philosophy to produce a remarkably non-Abelardian sort of solution. The thesis subjects IndT to scrutiny by taking into consideration five main sources (which either describe IndT in order to criticise it, or in order to support it): Abelard’s Logica ‘Ingredientibus’, Logica ‘Nostrorum’, ‘De generibus et speciebus’ (transcribed directly from ms. Orléans, BM, 266, pp. 154b-163a), ‘Quoniam de generali’ and the Isagoge Commentary ‘P17’ (from ms. Paris, BnF, lat. 3237, ff. 123ra–124va, 125ra–130rb). Not only IndT, but the whole description of realism found in these texts is investigated. Notre thèses porte sur la personnalité de Pierre Souvtchinsky(1892-1985), émigré russe,critique musical et littéraire,un des membres fondateurs du mouvement eurasien, mécène et écrivain. Nous avons étudié ses activités dans les contextes historiques et culturels franco-russe et leurs contributions à la vie musicale de Saint-Pétersbourg et de Paris. A travers des documents d’archives inédits, nous évoquons ses contacts avec A. Rimski-Korsakov, B. Assafiev, I. Stravinsky, S. Prokofiev et N. Miaskovski, son implication dans deux revues musicales : Le contemporain musical et Mélos, sa participation en tant qu’auteur du livret de la cantate de Prokofiev et de celui d’un opéra de Miaskovski. Nous mettons en évidence les caractéristiques de l’organisation de la vie culturelle Saint- pétersbourgeoise en soulignant les mécanismes qui permirent au jeune Pierre Souvtchinsky de s’y impliquer. Our thesis deals with the personality of Pierre Souvtchinsky (1892 – 1985) , a Russian immigrant, a music and literary critic, one of the founders of the Eurasian movement , a sponsor and a writer. We studied his work in the context of French-Russian culture and history as well as his contribution to the life of music in Saint Petersburg and in Paris. Documents of unpublished records reveal his contacts with Rimsky Korsakow, B. Assafiew, J Stravinsky, S. Profkofiew and N. Miakowsky. We discover his involvement in two magazines dedicated to music: ‘The contemporary of music’ and ‘Melos’, his participation as an author of the book for Prokofiew’s cantata and that of an opera composed by Miakowsky. We explain the characteristics of the organisation of cultural life in St. Petersburg in underlining its mechanisms which helped young Peter Souvtchinsky to get involved in it. His work with several magazines for Parisian music permitted us to detail his favourite themes between 1930and 1980 and to prove that his implication in collective works dedicated to main contemporary events as well as to history of Russian music turned him into a major personality of the 20th century

L’objet de ce travail est d’étudier le procès fait à Bernat de Cabrera, conseiller de Pierre III de Catalogne (IV d’Aragon), pour trahison et lèse-majesté en 1364. Ce « procès » est conservé aux Archives de la Couronne d’Aragon mais a été édité en 1867. Des documents de la chancellerie de Pierre IV, quelques uns issus des fonds navarrais et, dans une moindre mesure, des sources narratives permettent des recoupements critiques. La volonté royale de justifier la condamnation à mort d’un privado issu de la haute noblesse par la compilation d’actes d’enquête, comme la réhabilitation de sa mémoire en 1381, interrogent sur la solidité des faits reprochés à Bernat de Cabrera, les méthodes judiciaires suivies, les intérêts en jeu dans le royaume d’Aragon et plus largement en Espagne durant la seconde moitié du XIVe siècle. La procédure comme les faits reprochés à celui qui meurt décapité le 26 juillet 1364 révèlent les enjeux diplomatiques à l’œuvre entre les royaumes d’Espagne durant la guerre castillano-aragonaise mais aussi plus largement en Europe, les nouveaux équilibres de pouvoirs entre noblesse, pouvoir urbain et pouvoir royal ainsi que les mutations d’un pouvoir royal mis en difficulté par des guerres incessantes et à la recherche de nouveaux soutiens. Les dépositions des témoins, bien qu’évidemment biaisées décrivent des comportements, évoquent des valeurs et aussi des attentes. The intention of this work is to study the proceedings against Bernat de Cabrera, advisor to Peter III of Catalonia (IV of Aragon) for treason and lese-majesty in 1364. These "proceedings" are kept in the Archives of the Crown of Aragon but were printed in 1867. Some documents from the Chancellery of Peter IV, some from the Navarrese funds and, in fewer numbers, some narrative sources enable critical cross checking. The Royal will to justify the death penalty applied to a privado coming from high nobility through the data collection of investigatory sources, as well as the clearing of his name in 1381 question the solidity of the facts charged against Bernat de Cabrera, the law methods applied, the interests at stake in the realm of Aragon and more widely in Spain during the second half of the XIVth century. The procedure as well as the facts charged against he that died beheaded on July 26th, 1364 show the diplomatic stakes at play between the kingdoms of Spain, during the Castile-Aragon war, but more widely in Europe, the new balances of power between nobility, city power and royal power, but also the mutations of royal power put in a difficult situation by unceasing wars and the search for new supports. The witnesses' testimonies, though of course biased, describe behaviours, evoke values and also expectations. This work tries to figure out Count Osona's itinerary but also that of prisoners and middlemen in torn Iberian Peninsula. The study also bears on the confrontation of norms between power and society

The problem of this study was to determine if there was a difference in the self-concept of two groups of ninth-grade students when one group received the services of junior and senior students in a Peer Assistance and Leadership class. The results of the Piers-Harris Children's—Self—Concept Scale were used to determine the difference between the mean self-concept scores of the two groups and also to determine if there was a relationship between the criterion variable of the total self-concept score and eight predictor variables as identified by House Bill 1010: Limited English proficiency, age, school attendance, achievement scores two or more years below grade level in reading and mathematics on a norm-referenced test, failure to master any portion of the Texas Educational Assessment of Minimum Skills, failure in two or more subjects, grade retention, and eligibility for free or reduced-price lunch. A total of 105 students, 50 in the experimental group and 55 in the control group, participated. The findings revealed that there was no significant difference in the mean self-concept scores of the two groups. The correlation revealed that there were significant differences between self-concept and the variables of mathematics achievement scores, failing grades, and eligibility for free lunch.

Abstract:
This thesis is an exploration of ancestral narratives in the fiction of Thomas Keneally and Christopher Koch. Initially, ancestry in literature creates an historical relationship which articulates the link between the past and the present. In this sense ancestry functions as a type of cultural memory where various issues of inheritance can be negotiated. However, the real value of ancestral narratives lies in their power to aid in the construction of both personal and communal identities. They have the potential to transform these identities, to transgress “natural” boundaries and to reshape conventional identities in the light of historical experience. For Keneally, ancestral narratives depict national forbears who “narrate the nation” into being. His earlier fictions present ancestors of the nation within a mythic and symbolic framework to outline Australian national identity. This identity is static, oppositional, and characterized by the delineation of boundaries which set nations apart from one another. However, Keneally’s more recent work transforms this conventional construction of national identity. It depicts an Irish-Australian diasporic identity which is hyphenated and transgressive: it transcends the conventional notion of nations as separate entities pitted against one another. In this way Keneally’s ancestral narratives enact the potential for transforming identity through ancestral narrative. On the other hand, Koch’s work is primarily concerned with the intergenerational trauma causes by losing or forgetting one’s ancestral narrative. His novels are concerned with male gender identity and the fragmentation which characterizes a self-destructive idea of maleness. While Keneally’s characters recover their lost ancestries in an effort to reshape their idea of what it is to be Australian, Koch’s main protagonist lives in ignorance of his ancestor’s life. He is thus unable to take the opportunity to transform his masculinity due to the pervasive cultural amnesia surrounding his family history and its role in Tasmania’s past. While Keneally and Koch depict different outcomes in their fictional ancestral narratives they are both deeply concerned with the potential to transform national and gender identities through ancestry.

Abstract:
Cette étude souhaite contribuer à une meilleure connaissance et compréhension de l’idée de simplicité divine, qui signifie l’absence en Dieu de toute composition. Pièce centrale de la pensée théologique médiévale, elle fut redécouverte il y a 35 ans par des philosophes de tendance analytique, qui en contestèrent la cohérence. Elle est depuis lors l’objet d’un débat philosophique fourni, mais le détour par l’histoire de la philosophie est nécessaire pour dégager le réseau de concepts, d’arguments et de problèmes qui lui donne sens. Après avoir étudié la première élaboration de cette idée dans les textes antiques et patristiques, puis son traitement par Pierre Lombard à la veille du IVe concile de Latran de 1215, qui intègre pour la première fois la simplicité divine dans une profession de foi authentique du magistère, nous nous concentrons sur les œuvres de Bonaventure de Bagnoregio et de Thomas d’Aquin, qui accordent à cet attribut divin un rôle fondateur dans leur étude du mystère de Dieu. L’idée de simplicité divine s’y trouve sans cesse prise dans la dialectique de la ressemblance et de la dissemblance entre Créateur et créature. Tandis que Thomas associe de façon unilatérale la simplicité absolue à la transcendance de l’incréé, Bonaventure propose également des similitudes créées de la simplicité divine qui en favorisent l’intuition. Loin d’apparaître comme incohérente, l’idée de simplicité divine est un outil puissant pour ouvrir notre intelligence à un plan de réalité supérieur, certes mystérieux, mais néanmoins lumineux
This study seeks to contribute to a better understanding and comprehension of the idea of divine simplicity, which means the absence in God of any composition. Cornerstone of medieval theological thinking, divine simplicity was rediscovered 35 years ago by philosophers of analytical leanings, who challenged its coherence. It has since formed the subject of abundant philosophical debate, however, the detour via the history of philosophy is necessary in order to draw out the network of concepts, arguments and issues, from where divine simplicity derives its meaning. After the study of the first development of this idea in ancient and patristic texts, and its treatment by Peter Lombard on the eve of the 4th Council of Lateran in 1215, which integrates for the first time divine simplicity in a genuin profession of faith of the magisterium, we shall focus on the works of Bonaventure of Bagnoregio and Thomas Aquinas, who grant this divine attribute a founding role in the study of the mystery of God. The idea of divine simplicity keeps being comprised in the dialectics of similarity and dissimilarity between Creator and creature. While Aquinas associates in an unilateral way absolute simplicity and transcendence of the uncreated, Bonaventure offers also created resemblances of divine simplicity which favour its intuition. Far from appearing incoherent, the idea of divine simplicity is a powerful means to open our minds to a level of superior reality, indeed mysterious, but nevertheless radiant

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on a transformational but disregarded period in New Zealand’s twentieth century history, the era from the arrival of the Marines in 1942 to the arrival of Rock Around the Clock in 1956. It examines one of the chief agents in this metamorphosis: the impact of American culture. During this era the crucial conduits of that culture were movies, music and comics. The aims of my thesis are threefold: to explore how New Zealanders responded to this cultural trinity, determine the key features of their reactions and assess their significance. The perceived modernity and alterity of Hollywood movies, musical genres such as swing, and the content and presentation of American comics and ‘pulps’, became the sources of heated debate during the midcentury. Many New Zealanders admired what they perceived as the exuberance, variety and style of such American media. They also applauded the willingness of the cultural triptych to appropriate visual, textual and musical forms and styles without respect for the traditional classifications of cultural merit. Such perceived standards were based on the privileged judgements of cultural arbiters drawn from members of New Zealand’s educational and civic elites. Key figures within these elites insisted that American culture was ‘low’, inferior and commodified, threatening the dominance of a sacrosanct, traditional ‘high’culture. Many of them also maintained that these American cultural imports endangered both the traditionally British nature of our cultural heritage, and New Zealand’s distinctively ‘British’ identity. Many of these complaints enfolded deeper objections to American movies, music and literary forms exemplified by comics and pulps. Significant intellectual and civic figures portrayed these cultural modes as pernicious and malignant, because they were allegedly the product of malignant African-American, Jewish and capitalist sources, which threatened to poison the cultural and social values of New Zealanders, especially the young. In order to justify such attitudes, these influential cultural guardians portrayed the general public as an essentially immature, susceptible, unthinking and puritanical mass. Accordingly, this public, supposedly ignorant of the dangers posed by American culture, required the intervention and protection of members of this elite. Responses to these potent expressions of American culture provide focal points which both illuminate and reflect wider social, political and ideological controversies within midcentury New Zealand. Not only were these reactions part of a process of comprehension and negotiation of new aesthetic styles and media modes. They also represent an arena of public and intellectual contention whose significance has been neglected or under-valued. New Zealanders’ attitudes towards the new cinematic, literary and musical elements of American culture occurred within a rich and revealing socio-political and ideological context. When we comment on that culture we reveal significant features of our own national and cultural selves.

In recent years, BitTorrent (BT) has been one of the most efficient mechanisms for Peer-to-Peer (P2P) content distribution. At present, many researches are focused on using BitTorrent on video streaming service to benefit to video piece distribution. The traditional BitTorrent protocol is not suitable for real-time video streaming because of the out-of-order downloading. Many modified Piece Selection Strategy for BitTorrent protocols have been proposed to address this issue by adding some features, such as sliding windows and high priority set (HPS). However, those approaches inevitably trade the important data diversity in original BitTorrent for realtime video streaming services, resulting in significantly reducing the efficiency of data sharing on P2P networks. In this research project we propose a new modified BitTorrent protocol with Urgency-Aware Piece Selection (UR-AWARE), which can adaptively adjust downloading bandwidth for urgency set (US) and rarest set (RS) based on the viewing conditions to possess the characteristic of rarest-first selection in original BitTorrent and also maintain the real-time viewing quality and furthermore, use rarest section selection to enhance the number of rarest pieces in system, improve the diversity of piece in each peer, and increase the utilization of peer uploading bandwidth. The experiment results showed that UR-AWARE is better than the previous state-of-the-art methods on the metrics of piece late rate and video download time to efficiently use BitTorrent on video streaming service regardless of the windows size being 2% or 8%. Finally, peer’s throughput and piece rareness evaluation in system of experiment results showed UR-AWARE of throughput is the best and standard deviation of number of pieces is more than 3-7 times the previous state-of-the-art methods in the windows size being 2%、4%、8% and 16%. Therefore, UR-AWARE of diversity of piece is the highest.

As the Internet becomes popular, the video traffic on the Internet grows rapidly as well. In the traditional Client-Server architecture the server is likely to become the bottleneck, therefore the Peer-to-Peer streaming services gradually takes over as the mainstream architecture. In a general Peer-to-Peer multimedia streaming system, each produced data piece must meet a playback deadline, thus every peer will download the pieces sequentially, and usually send its download requests to its most powerful neighbor. However, in this situation most peers will try to request the same pieces if these peers join the system at about the same time, and they all will have to download from the server because none of the peers have those pieces, which will increase the server's load significantly. When some of the neighbors have the piece, the powerful peer will receive a large amount of requests from its neighbor, which will overload the peer, and slows down its service. Eventually, the quality of viewing experience will be greatly affected. In this thesis, we propose a piece selection strategy and a request transmission strategy. To determine the next piece to download in the Un-urgent area, a peer calculates the probability of selection for all the candidate pieces according to their importance among the neighbors. In selecting which neighbor to transmit the request to a peer will consider both the neighbor's service response time and its potential contribution, and then give priority to a neighbor with less potential contribution to balance the load between neighbors. Simulation results show that our method apparently improves the assistance among the neighboring peers. Compared to the previous approach, our approach can reduce the load on the server by at least 40%, and the average viewing time can be reduced by about 60%. The purpose of this study is to analyze the content of 15 episodes TV cartoon “One Piece”, and to discuss how the differences and distributions of its role present in positive and negative categories of the peer interaction. The findings are as follows: (1) In different initiates, the proportion of top three middle and little categories of the peer interaction behaviors are verbal aggression, one-way assistance, physical aggression and encouragement. (2) There are significant differences in different initiates in middle categories of the peer interaction behaviors. The proportion of aggression is higher than other middle categories in male to male, male to female and female to male. The proportion of support is higher than other middle categories in female to female. (3) There are significant differences in different initiates between positive and negative of the peer interaction behaviors. The proportion of negative is higher than positive in male to male and female to male. The proportion of positive is higher than negative in female to female and male to female. (4) The proportion of top three middle and little categories of the peer interaction behaviors are verbal aggression, one-way assistance and physical aggression. (5) There are significant differences in middle and little categories of the peer interaction behaviors. The proportion of verbal aggression, one-way assistance and physical aggression are higher than other middle and little categories. (6) There are no significant differences between positive and negative of the peer interaction behaviors. It means that there is no difference between positive and negative of the peer interaction behaviors.

Abstract:
La Révolution française est un événement qui a profondément marqué la modernité. De nombreux courants de pensée du XIXe siècle se sont inspirés des idées qui y ont émergé, dont l'anarchiste Pierre Kropotkine qui a consacré un livre à son histoire. L'influence de la Révolution sur sa pensée est indéniable. L'anarchisme, une doctrine politique qui s'oppose au pouvoir en général et à l'État en particulier, s'est surtout développé en réaction à la déception populaire envers le libéralisme. Anarchisme et libéralisme proposent une lecture différente des événements de la Révolution française et de leurs conséquences. L'anarcho-communisme défendu par Kropotkine affirme s'inspirer directement de cet épisode historique pour faire la critique de la société moderne et la promotion de la prochaine révolution. Au niveau politique, plusieurs idées phares de la pensée de Kropotkine découlent de la Révolution. Le lien que font les sans-culottes entre la liberté et l'égalité, leur usage de l'action directe et leur rassemblement dans des lieux de pouvoir strictement populaires en sont des exemples frappants. D'un autre côté, l'appui du peuple à un État centralisé et à la Terreur va à l'encontre des thèses anarchistes développées au XIXe siècle. De plus, c'est l'échec du peuple à s'emparer du pouvoir et à l'assumer aux moments critiques qui a ouvert la porte à la domination de la bourgeoisie sur la société. Certains autres éléments de la pensée de Kropotkine viennent aussi nuancer son lien avec la Révolution française, notamment sa conception naturaliste de l'histoire. Sous cet angle, la Révolution apparaît plutôt comme l'épisode moderne d'une lutte entre les tendances hiérarchiques et libertaires de l'humanité. Au niveau économique, Pierre Kropotkine s'inspire du proto-communisme développé par les sans-culottes pour façonner son modèle économique. Les questions de subsistance et de solidarité qui étaient au coeur des revendications populaires trouvent leur écho chez Kropotkine. Par contre, on retrouvait aussi chez les sans-culottes un attachement à la propriété privée qui contredit la théorie anarcho-communiste. De plus, avec le rôle économique primordial accordé à l'État et la volonté de centraliser la production, on peut facilement douter de l'aptitude des sans-culottes au communisme. La conception historique qu'à Kropotkine de l'économie sociale qui émerge spontanément des masses populaires vient relativiser le débat autour de l'apport de la Révolution française. De plus, avec des enjeux comme l'expropriation, la division du travail et le lien entre production et consommation qui sont à peine effleurés par les sans-culottes, on ne peut pas voir dans la Révolution française la seule origine de la pensée économique de Pierre Kropotkine. À la lumière de la vision éthique et morale qui sous-tend sa pensée, on doit constater que le lien qui unit les événements de la Révolution française à la pensée de Kropotkine est parfois contradictoire.
