Abstract:
Chodzi o to, by przez pogłębione studium włączyć je do całości zagadnień dotyczących pierwotnego rozumienia prymatu Piotrowego oraz traktowania go w pierwotnym Kościele. Paul the Apostle and the Primacy of Saint Peter: Within the frames of theology of the Primacy of Saint Peter the testimony concerning this issue which Paul the Apostle provides through his attitude and teachings is generally disregarded. The question, however, is quite significant since it is clearly present in the New Testament. The point is, that through the profound study this issue should be included among the subjects concerning the original understanding of the primacy of Saint Peter and his status in the early Church. Certainly, Saint Paul still constitutes a decisive argument in the discussion concerning the primacy of Saint Peter and may serve as an example of its practical affirmation. This paper constitutes an attempt to draw the attention to this issue and to the need for certain supplementation in the theology of the primacy of Saint Peter.

Abstract:
Abstract The author suggests an attribution for two largely unknown Baroque sculptures inside the Church of St. Peter and Paul at Potsdam. The crucifixus, which has so far not been attributed to an artist, is shown to exhibit parallels to a 1716 work by Paul Egell. It remains unclear, however, whether the Potsdam crucifixus was also created by Egell himself or by Johann Peter Benckert, who congenially completed it in 1763 with a statue of the kneeling Maria Magdalena. The appealing depiction of the saint as an elegant sinner and penitent offers believers various possibilities for identification.

Abstract:
The opening of the former Jesuit Cathedral of the Saint Apostles Peter and Paul in Lviv in December 2011, which got the status of the Garrison Church, actualized the issue of this research and the understanding of its historical and cultural heritage. The process of church restoration that started in 2012 and continues to this day has become the catalyst for these studies. To a large extent, significant attention to artistic and historical research on the exterior and interior of the temple has been drawn by the need for a professional restoration of the church’s ornaments. Taking into account the fact that the majority of the church’s ornaments were created mostly in the XVII-XVIII centuries, its research provides an opportunity to understand the artistic and religious culture of the region at that time in a better way. At the same time, such studies provide an opportunity to research interregional cultural interactions as well. One of the examples is the plots connected with the events and peoples that inhabited the Near and Far East. Eastern motives occupy a special place in the activity of the Society of Jesus, which was particularly successful in spreading the Word of God in the Orient starting from the XVII-XVIII centuries. According to the sources, Lviv has also played an important role in the «Eastern»” plans of the Jesuits. In a way, Lviv was a center from which Jesuits gradually expanded their structure to the East. In particular, some monks started their missions to the Ottoman Empire and neighboring lands from Lviv. Moreover, a significant number of different nations of the East among whom monks carried out their missionary work was located in the city. These events were reflected in the artistic ornaments of the church of the Saint Apostles Peter and Paul as well as in its activity. In spite of the fact that the Eastern motives could be studied as a separate research group, they comprised a logical part of the general church ornaments that were based on the idea of missionary work. Taking into account what was mentioned before, this article is an attempt to interpret the ornaments of the Garrison Church of Saint Apostles Peter and Paul (former Jesuit Cathedral) a significant part of which is dedicated to Eastern motives.

Vlasova, Maria. "The image of Pentecost in the iconographic programme of the altar ciborium of Sts Peter and Paul Cathedral in St. Petersburg." St. Tikhons' University Review. Series V. Christian Art 53 (March 29, 2024): 92–109. http://dx.doi.org/10.15382/sturv202453.92-109.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the unique monument of Peter the Great Baroque – the altar ciborium of the St. Petersburg Peter and Paul Cathedral. The study presents an analysis of the decoration of the ciborium (1722-1729, I.P. Zarudny). First of all, the connection of the iconographic and iconological program of the monument with the circumstances of the apostolic dedication of the cathedral of the new capital of the Russian Empire in the context of the church reform carried out by Peter I is traced. The synodal reform is proposed to be considered from the point of view of the principles of the structure of the ancient Church as a justification for the transition from patriarchal governance in favour of the conciliar Most Holy Governing Synod. In the article, the altar canopy of the Peter and Paul Cathedral is compared with the baldachin of the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, with the imperial coronation baldachins of Catherine I and with the baldachin of D.L. Bernini from Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome. The external imitation of the European fashion for baldachins was perceived as an embellishing decoration, which didn't prevent the continuation of the Moscow tradition of church decoration in the St. Petersburg monument, and the preservation of its archetypal relationship with the Jerusalem temple. Thus, the semantic connection of the royal and Divine thrones, laid down in the early Byzantine period, continues until the beginning of the XVIII century. It has found its artistic interpretation, including in the composite monogram crowning the Cathedral of Peter and Paul, the variant of interpretation of which is proposed by the author. The theme of the kingdom in the decoration of I.P. Zarudny's ciborium is intertwined with the theme of apostolic succession and the foundation of the church. The apostolic dedication of the Peter and Paul Cathedral was embodied in the artistic solution of the entire altar composition, for which the image of the "Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles" became central. The establishment of a new Church and a new Jerusalem, manifested in the image of "Pentecost", indicated a particularly important role for the new state symbolically denoting its continuity from both the artistic tradition of Byzantium and the tradition of the Western Christian world.

Abstract:
"The Beginning and Spread of Christianity in Rome. Christianity was preached in Rome since its very beginning. Among those who were baptised on the Day of Pentecost in Jerusalem there were some citizens of Rome. These were some of the Roman Jews, who has thirteen synagogues in the capital of the Empire, but there were also some of the pagans living in Rome. They were the first preachers of Christianity in Rome, who managed to lay the foundation of the Church from the capital of the Empire. A great number of the seventy Apostles of Jesus Christ came and preached Christianity in Rome. Their activity was intense and fruitful because in 57 or 58 A.D when Saint Apostle Paul wrote in Corinth the Epistle to the Romans, he is happy about the christians from the church of Rome: “First, I want to thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, because your faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world. For God is my witness.” Rom.5,8. Christianity in Rome spread even more with the arrival of the Saints Apostles Peter and Paul. They consolidated and organized the Church from the Capital of the Empire and so, through their arrival, Christianity moved from Jerusalem to Rome. Key words: Jesus Christ, Peter, Paul, Church, Christianity, Apostles, Gospel, Rome."

Abstract:
The article analyzes the sources on the history of Saints Peter and Paul Garrison Church (the former Jesuit Church) discovered in the funds of Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv. In particular, the documents that are of practical importance for the process of church revitalization as the building remained closed from 1946 until 2011 are distinguished. The significant corpus of sources concerning the church history is the archive of Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv, the depository of which was located in the church until the end of 2011. With these documents, it is possible to trace the history of the church building during the Soviet time and the changes that happened during this period. Moreover, the collection of photographic materials with the depiction of different parts of the church constitutes a significant corpus of sources. This information is valuable for the conservation professionals working on the renewal of church exteriors and interiors. Particularly, the photographs that show the process of the roof restoration in 1959 offer an opportunity to assess the degree of the ceiling destruction during the Second World War. Photographs of the frescoes in the main nave demonstrate the state of the ceiling and frescos as of the beginning of the 20th century and therefore give an insight into the progress of conservation works during the interwar period. The analysis of the photograph of the altar of Saint Stanislaw Kostka makes it possible to understand what one of the three chapels in the church looked like. The other two chapels (of the Virgin Mary and Saint Stanislaw Kostka) will be restored in course of time. As for the third chapel of Saint Benedict the Martyr, important documents concerning the restoration of this chapel at the beginning of the 20th century are stored in the funds of the library. With these documents, it is possible to specify the appearance of the chapel and the peculiarities of its decorations, as the chapel does not belong to the church nowadays. To sum up, it can be stated that the funds of Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv contain a relatively small amount of materials on the history of Saints Peter and Paul Garrison Church (the Jesuit Church). At the same time, some of them are important for the studies of the history of the church, so they deserve attention from the researchers.

Gray, Catriona Anna. "The medieval church of Montrose: a place ‘of much antiquity and abundantly populous’." Innes Review 65, no. 1 (May 2014): 13–32. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/inr.2014.0064.

Abstract:
Montrose was one of Scotland's earliest royal burghs, but historians have largely overlooked its parish kirk. A number of fourteenth and fifteenth-century sources indicate that the church of Montrose was an important ecclesiastical centre from an early date. Dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, by the later middle ages it was a place of pilgrimage linked in local tradition with the cult of Saint Boniface of Rosemarkie. This connection with Boniface appears to have been of long standing, and it is argued that the church of Montrose is a plausible candidate for the lost Egglespether, the ‘church of Peter’, associated with the priory of Restenneth. External evidence from England and Iceland appears to identify Montrose as the seat of a bishop, raising the possibility that it may also have been an ultimately unsuccessful rival for Brechin as the episcopal centre for Angus and the Mearns.

Abstract:
В 2023 г. In 2023, a large-scale reconstruction of the former Anglican Church of Jesus Christ on the English Embankment in Saint Petersburg started seeking to adapt the building for modern use. As part of this work, the painting Descent from the Cross — a copy of the eponymous painting by P.P. Rubens specifically made for this interior — was removed from the western wall of the main Church Hall. During the restoration, the work was carefully investigated, the composition of the painting materials was researched and an attempt was made to eliminate the fractures of the paint layer without duplication on a new support.

Abstract:
Saint Mark the Evangelist (Cyrene around 10 AD – Alexandria April 25th 68 AD) was a member of the Jewish tribe o Levi. He is nephew of Saint Barnabas, close associate of Saint Paul and Peter to whom he was secretary. In the New Testament he is mentioned eight times and Mary mother of John called Mark is mentioned for the ninth time. The first Christian community in Jerusalem gathered in his mother Mary’s home. According to some sources Jesus ate his last supper in Mark’s mother Mary’s house. He is worshipped by: The Roman Catholic Church, The Orthodox Church, The Coptic Church, the eastern Catholic churches, the Lutheran Church. He is multiple patron. Worship of Saint Mark the evangelist in Croats’ Christian traditional culture is reflected in legends; cathedrals and churches consecrated to that evangelist; toponyms; chrematonyms; processions and blessings of fields, crops, vineyards; folk celebrations (fairs); helping the poor; cult shrines; folk divinations and sayings; bonfires; oral lyrical poems; prayers. The paper cites the results of field research conducted from the year 1997 until the year 2016. About fifty legends, prayers, customs, rituals, processions, divinations have been originally recorded among Croatian Catholics in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia. The paper (re)constructs the life of Saint Mark the Evangelist on the basis of the New Testament, tales and legends. Further, the aim of the paper is to save from the oblivion the old legends, customs, rituals, processions, oral lyrical poems, prayers, divinations and to point out their social and aesthetic function using the multidisciplinary interpretation. Inductive-deductive method and methods of description, comparison, analysis and synthesis are used alongside the filed research work.

Abstract:
Chapter 2 examines Grace’s undergraduate years at the College of Saint Catherine during the mid–late1920s and then her gradual conversion to socialism during the 1930s. Included among the various factors that led to this shift were her experiences at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where she went in 1929 to pursue a doctorate in psychology. Grace maintained her commitment to social justice that she had developed in her youth as a working-class Catholic in St. Paul, but now channeled it in a revolutionary direction in a new city. Both her encounter with the 1934 Minneapolis Teamster strikes and her first job as a vocational rehabilitation counselor in the Minnesota Department of Education that she began in 1935 intensified Grace’s evolving view that a socialist society was the only way to address the needs of workers and the exploited. In 1938 Grace entered the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) as a delegate to its founding convention. By September 1940, she left her job at the Minnesota Department of Education—in part because of red baiting during the “little red scare”—to work full-time for the party, leaving the Church (and her husband Gilbert, whom she had married in 1934) behind.
