Abstract:
Antonin Artaud (1896–1948) is considered to be one of the most influential theatre practitioners in the 20th century although his theory has been deemed too abstruse. The aim of this paper is to offer a systematic account of Antonin Artaud’s concepts for his Theatre of Cruelty and the ways it influenced subsequent theatre practitioners, namely Peter Brook, Jerzy Grotowski and Eugenio Barba.

At present, Artaud is an inescapable reference in the theatrical field: Artaud and The theatre and the plague; Artaud and Theatre of cruelty; theoretical writings collected in Theatre and its double. AbstractBoth Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri inCommonwealth(2008) and Peter Linebaugh inThe Magna Carta Manifesto(2009) want to put the commons and communism—understood as a form of society in which private property has been replaced by property in common—“back on the agenda.” They even insist that just such a social and economic order “grounded in the common” is “already in process” and that communism is thus more relevant and possible than ever. To a certain extent, they are right. We need a functioning commons if human society is to remain viable. But we also need a functioning commercial economy capable of feeding the billions that human society has and most likely will continue to produce.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the commentary preceding the facsimile the main issues are date and provenance of the marginal glosses and of some additional pieces at the beginning and the end (Glossa Coloniensis). The editors mainly follow Charles M. Radding and Antonio Ciarelli, seeking the origins in a centre of Lombard law (Pavia) about 1125. This opinion was strongly criticized by the late André Gouron, preferring (Northern) French, English or German origins about 1170. The author suggests Cologne as the place of origin, arguing from the existence there of schools of canon and civil law about 1165–1185 (recalled recently by Peter Landau). He further criticizes the commentary on the development of law studies in Cologne in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Abstract:
This is a study of Peter Shaffer's play, The royal hunt of the sun, in the light of Antonin Arthaud's theatrical theory, made explicit in his book, The theatre and its double, where two main points become evident: the use of the language of the mise-en-scène and the use of the stage-auditorium as a single whole. Both lead to a single aim, the experience of the theatre as a kind of ritual. The elements of the play, from the non-linguistic to the most evidently verbal ones, constitute a particular theatre language. While it is being uttered, it serves the purpose to rouse special feelings in the spectators, who then will be identified with the actors. As a consequence, the performance becomes a ritual, which illustrates Arthaud's influence.

Peter I. Hajnal, the Government Publications Specialist at the University of Toronto and the author of many reference books and articles relating to the publications of international organizations, has compiled a list of 110 publications he believes to be currently the best, and most useful sources of information produced by international organizations in general and the United Nations and its specialized agencies in particular, as well as books written about such organizations and their publications. This list was originally prepared for the Conference on the United Nations: Law and Legal Research sponsored by and conducted at the Institute for Comparative and International Legal Research, Center for International Legal Studies, St. Mary's University School of Law, San Antonio, Texas. At this important conference, which took place on February 20–22, 1991, a number of specialists discussed different aspects of the United Nations and described the publications, as well as other information activities, of the United Nations and its specialized agencies. Mr. Peter I. Hajnal spoke about United Nations publications. In conjunction with his lecture he distributed to the participants of the conference the excellent list reproduced below. The list is published with the kind permission of its author and Professor Robert L. Abstract:
ABSTRACTAccording to the textbook version of history, the Enlightenment played a crucial role in the creation of the modern, liberal democracies of the West. Ever since this view – which we might describe as the modernization thesis – was first formulated by Peter Gay, it has been repeatedly criticized as misguided: a myth. Yet, as this paper shows, it continues to survive in postwar historiography, in particular in the Anglophone world. Indeed, Gay's most important and influential successors – historians such as Robert Darnton and Roy Porter – all ended up defending the idea that the Enlightenment was a major force in the creation of modern democratic values and institutions. More recently, Jonathan Israel's trilogy on the Enlightenment has revived the modernization thesis, albeit in a dramatic new form. Yet, even Israel's work, as its critical reception highlights, does not convincingly demonstrate that the Enlightenment, as an intellectual movement, contributed in any meaningful way to the creation of modern political culture. This conclusion raises a new question: if the Enlightenment did not create our modern democracies, then what did it do? In answer to that question, this paper suggests that we should take more seriously the writings of enlightened monarchists like Nicolas-Antoine Boulanger. Studying the Enlightenment might not allow us to understand why democratic political culture came into being. But, as Boulanger's work underscores, it might throw light on an equally important problem: why democracy came so late in the day.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThe question of the unity of the soul is posed in the Midle Ages, at the crossing point of the Aristotelician theory, which distinguishes several potencies, even several parts in the soul, and the Augustinian doctrine, which underlines the unity of the mind using corporeal powers. John Buridan, when commenting the Treatise on the Soul of Aristotle, emphasizes the unity, probably in reaction against John of Jandun's position. From the middle of 14th century till the end of 17th, this problem goes on being debated through the two questions of the substantial unity of the soul and of the the relation between the soul and its potencies. This article studies some stages of this development, some of them immediately after Buridan, in Nicole Oresme's and Peter of Ailly's positions, another more distant, in Antoine Rubio's work. It suggests that we find still the same problematics, reelaborated and transformed, in Descartes.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the Shadows of Dresden: Modernism and the War Landscape focuses on British-American test complexes and lithographs devised to understand German and Japanese military targets of World War II. Project sites stretched from England and Scotland to Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Utah, and Florida. Vignettes of Axis-built environments featured only those forms and details that were deemed essential, complemented by the abstracted target maps. Together these models and maps inaugurated a new way of looking at cities and built environments as war landscapes. In this article Karen J. Weitze studies the roles of the participating architects, engineers, artists, and art historians—Marc Peter Jr., John Burchard, Henry Elder, Gerald K. Geerlings, Eric Mendelsohn, Antonin Raymond, Walter Gropius, Konrad Wachsmann, Arthur Korn, Felix James Samuely, E. S. Richter, Paul Zucker, Hans Knoll, Albert Kahn, Ludwig Hilberseimer, George Hartmueller, I. M. Pei, Erwin Panofsky, Paul Frankl, and Kurt Weitzmann—within the setting of the modern movement, and evaluates the historic obscurity of the wartime landscapes against the collective human moment that was Dresden.

Abstract:
The article deals with translator’s dilemmas in the context of picturebooks on the example of the new translations of the French classic “Le Petit Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Given the intermedia character or illustrated books for children, their translation is a very demanding task. It requires ‘visual literacy’, the ability of ‘reading’ and understanding pictures. The way, in which the translators cope with the interplay between the verbal and the visual, so essential for picturebooks, allows to discern their translation strategies. The examined examples point out the discrepancies between domesticating translation and the original illustrations and also the impact of new illustration on the target text. The example of Hans Magnus Enzensberger shows to what extent the original illustrations can be a disruptive factor in adapting translation, so that the only solution is to ignore the intermedia character of the source text. Such manipulation results in the empoverishment of the text. In the case of Peter Sloterdijk his demand for new illustrations can be considered as a consequence of the re-contextualization, that can be observed in his translation.

Abstract:
is preliminary study of the only extant manuscript of the historical tractate, written by the catholic arcbishop Petar Bogdan Baksič (1601–1674) in Latin and rediscovered in 2017, aims to reveal the methodological principlesof the author, the structure and the historical sources of the text. In the treatise there is evidence about the date of its creation (1666) as well as about the main historical sources used by the author. These sources include some well known historical works written by Caesar Baronius, Antonio Bonfini, Martin Cromer, Mauro Orbini, the popular Luca Wadding’s Annales Minorum, dogmatical works and hagiographical accounts of authors such as Charles Vialart, Sixtus of Siena, Pietro de’ Natali, Ivan Tomko Marnavič, Latin translations of medieval ecclesiastical histories, etc. The article claims that the main goal of the author was to offer a historical account of the catholicism in the Bulgarian lands, mainly in the region around Chiprovez, called "fatherland" by Petar Bogdan. Beginning with a preface, the tractate is divided into seventy chapters with separate titles. The tractate is much more than a work of a scholar: it is a confession of faith by one of the leading Bulgarian intellectuals and spiritual figures of the 17th century. Driven by love for his fellow citizens, Petar Bogdan was committed to leave a meaningful and powerful message for the future generations. This is evidenced for instance by the following words in the preface, quotation from Cicero: Parents are dear; dear are children, relatives, friends; one native land embraces all our loves; and who that is true would hesitate to give his life for her, if by his death he could render her a service (Cic. Off. 1. 57.)?
