Poke, Robin, and n/a. "A case study of Olympic, World and Commonwealth Sculling champion Peter Antonie." University of Canberra. Health Sciences, 2006. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20061207.104628.

Abstract:
This thesis is a biographical case study of Olympic, World and Commonwealth sculling champion Peter Antonie, whose career at the elite or high performance level spanned some 23 years from 1977 to 2000. The thesis examines the exploits of an oarsman and sculler regarded within his sport as one of Australias greatest ever, despite his being considered physically disadvantaged at every phase of his career. Antonie was, most notably, a man of small stature widely considered a handicap at the level of rowing to which he aspired, and at which he ultimately succeeded. The study also examines what it was, despite those perceived disadvantages, that drove him to excel. The thesis further examines, in thematic form, parallel developments within Australian rowing and sculling in the quarter of a century in which Peter Antonie competed. This was a period during which fundamental changes were seen in Australian sport, notably in the areas of funding and administration, and which saw a transformation from amateur to professional participation at the Olympic, Commonwealth Games and world championships levels. There were also marked changes to high performance rowing as a result of technological advances that produced new types of equipment, and scientific developments that brought new training and selection methodologies. The research was carried out as part of a systematic attempt to examine and investigate Peter Antonies reputation, particularly as it compares with his better-known contemporaries, the so-called Oarsome Foursome, and to analyse that reputation in light of the administrative developments in Australian rowing and Australian sport. The historical approach used was the biographical method of research and analysis, with the preferred technique the obtaining of oral testimony from 50 interviewees, some of whom were interviewed more than once. The research clearly indicated that throughout his career Peter Antonie continually defied assumptions about his potential, particularly where science-based preconceptions about talent identification were concerned, and achieved success far beyond initial expectations. As a result his achievements, nationally and globally, are perhaps unparalleled, and he is held in the highest regard, particularly by the higher profile Oarsome Foursome. Despite this accolade, however, Antonies public profile remains very low, to the extent that beyond the rowing fraternity he is virtually unknown. Despite, too, rowings status as an Olympic sport and the commensurate increases in funding during Antonies career, he himself maintains a fundamentally amateur approach to his participation in rowing and is critical of several facets of its current professional administration. Despite, too, rowing and sculling once being among Australias major sports a hundred or so years ago, within contemporary Australian society it has a low profile, a situation which, given that current administration, appears likely to continue. Problems encountered during the research included some diffidence on the part of an essentially humble and self-effacing subject and a lack of literature relating to Antonie and his sport. But these were to an extent offset by the enthusiasm displayed for the project by other interviewees. The results of the research are significant in that, like the subject, they defy some precepts concerning facets of Australian rowing and sculling, which in turn might encourage further investigation.

Montpellier 3, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007MON30037.

Full text
Abstract:
The peculiarity of contemporary narratives is to combine three different modes of writing: biography, history and fiction. Progressing along phenomenological lines, the purpose of the present dissertation is to highlight their interests through the study of the unifying notion of combinatorics which paradoxically proves to be the answer to textual fragmentation. For the latter arises indeed from the selection of a real person, the transposition of a real place and the adaptation of a historical era which eventually become the protagonist and the spatial and temporal context of the fiction thus invented. This method which consists in taking up biographical and fictional texts related with these literary figures contributes to narrativizing cockney tradition in Ackroyd’s novels, latin rhetoric in Quignard’s narratives and english literature in Byatt’s works

Thesis, Paris 3, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA030112.

Full text
Abstract:
The trace can be defined as the tangible relic which provokes confusion in theobserver’s mind by revealing a form of absent presence. The narratives of Antonio Tabucchi,Peter Handke and Pierre Péju, three writers born in the 1940s in countries – Italy, Austria and France – that collaborated with Nazi Germany, are filled with an anxiety which is historical aswell as it is ontological, and display the various forms of the spectral presence of the trace. Butthis spectral presence, which classically entails a distressing feeling of dispossession, also manifests the emergence of a new world which is physically perceived as it reveals itself. It is successively an epiphany, the revelation of an original advent, and the return of past spectres, and more particularly those of the Second World War. Through its themes, diegesis and stylisticchoices, the narrative as trace thus conveys an ethical injunction. It discloses the importance of atwofold responsibility: the historical legacy of the 20thcentury’s ashes, and the ontologicalrequest of accepting a present without certainty, that can only be apprehended through the verybreach that constitutes it. The narrative as trace thereby becomes the literary representation of asplit state of being, everlastingly wounded and ultimate condition of the coming future; and the heuristic pursuit, by rejecting any possibilities of assertion, concurs with the reasoning ofsceptical philosophy. Understanding can only be approached in an asymptotic way, trace ofwhat has been and sketched glimmer of what will be

Abstract:
This research investigates two performance practices of Anton Webern’s Variationen für Klavier, Op. 27 through a comparison between two editions and three recordings of the work. The first edition (the Urtext edition of 1937) and Stadlen’s practical edition of 1979 were compared in regards to the expressive markings added by the composer and the performer, and interpretive aspects of recente literature as well as Stadlen’s texts were considered. Using the software Sonic Visualiser tempo fluctuations were analysed in the recordings by Peter Stadlen (1948), Yvonne Loriod (1961) and Charles Rosen (1969). The results brought to evidence two contrasting performance styles. On the one hand, the post-war style (Cook, 2016) of Loriod and Rosen, marked by the influence of the Darmstadt avant-garde, and, on the other hand, the pre-war style of Peter Stadlen, which calls into question the interpretive canon of the work established by the post-war style of performance.

Abstract:
The problem of this study was to determine if there was a difference in the self-concept of two groups of ninth-grade students when one group received the services of junior and senior students in a Peer Assistance and Leadership class. The results of the Piers-Harris Children's—Self—Concept Scale were used to determine the difference between the mean self-concept scores of the two groups and also to determine if there was a relationship between the criterion variable of the total self-concept score and eight predictor variables as identified by House Bill 1010: Limited English proficiency, age, school attendance, achievement scores two or more years below grade level in reading and mathematics on a norm-referenced test, failure to master any portion of the Texas Educational Assessment of Minimum Skills, failure in two or more subjects, grade retention, and eligibility for free or reduced-price lunch. A total of 105 students, 50 in the experimental group and 55 in the control group, participated. The findings revealed that there was no significant difference in the mean self-concept scores of the two groups. The correlation revealed that there were significant differences between self-concept and the variables of mathematics achievement scores, failing grades, and eligibility for free lunch.

Entitled « Childhood's Geographies in Alice'sAdventures in Wonderland [1865] by Lewis Carroll, Le Avventure di Pinocchio [1883] by Carlo Collodi, Peter Pan [1911] by James Matthew Barrie and Le Petit Prince [1943] by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry », this thesis investigates the concepts of space, place, and the world of childhood, by focusing on the treatment of space. We approach these four works in children's literature, not from the perspective of the character, but rather from that of the relationship between the geography developed through the narration, and the enduring popularity of the works. Although childhood fancy seems to be at the principle of the creation of worlds, the ephemeral materialization in space can be named the force behind the elaboration of mythical places. By putting in relation such notions as the children's illusion, the space of the fantastic, the space of the marvelous, the spatialization of children's desire and the de-materialization of territory by memory and tale, the hypotheses formulated in this thesis find their place among the studies on fantasy literature, and put the spatialization of fancy at the core of the discussion

Forman's Amadeus and the Role of Music in Film Narrative Vedoucí diplomové práce (supervisor): Zpracoval (author): Mgr. Tereza Havelková, Ph.D. Tomáš Bazika studijní obor (program): Praha, July 2020 Obecná teorie a dějiny umění a kultury Abstract The subject of this thesis is a study of the ways of using the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Miloš Forman's motion picture Amadeus. In my thesis, I focus on how Amadeus employs pre-existing classical compositions to create a new, largely fictional narrative based on the life and music of Mozart. I argue that instead of applying pre-existing pieces as film music, Amadeus conceives individual scenes as well as its overall filmic structure to accommodate the music's expressive qualities and biographical associations. I engage in a conversation with relevant existing scholarship to establish a theoretical framework for a systematic interpretation of the meaning-making roles of music in Amadeus. Drawing on Claudia Gorbman's concept of diegetic, non-diegetic and metadiegetic sound categories, I apply her taxonomy to Amadeus in order to show how not only the selection and placement of music but also its relation to the diegesis determine its impact on the narrative. I propose that in its treatment of Mozart's music, Amadeus reverses the traditional hierarchy of the...

At the end of the thirteenth and the begining of the fourtheenth century, Edward I (1239-1307), conqueror of Wales and Scotland, seems to have been in perpetual conflict with Scotland, France and Wales. Those conflicts put him in great need of funding. At that time, the Parliament was already an important institution in England that Edward I had to convince to grant him the taxation he was asking for. This was complication by the fact that socio-culturals tensions inherited from the conquest of 1066 were complicating a lot the task of the king whos was in need of a solution for uniting the whole English society against his enemies. The king whas also in conflict with some of his subjects. This was the case of Anthony Bek the bishop palatine of Durham who was in danger of loosing his privileges and liberties. Searching a reconciliation with the king, Bek asked Peter of Langtoft a monk from northern England to write a chronicle in which he would preach the union of the whole English society against the enemy of Edward I. This memoir will study how Peter of Langtoft in his chronicle calumny the king’s enemies, specialy the Scots and how he used history to preach the union of all the english society against the king’s enemies.

This essay addresses the relationship between a public place and its occupation by homeless converting it into a personal place. Drawing on Martin Heidegger, Marc Augé, Ignasi de Sola-Morales, Italo Calvino and Maria Manuela Dias Fernandes a conceptual universe was built tha was complemented and deepened by reflecting on some of the works of the artists Enrique jezik, Hans Op de Beeck, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Andreas Gursky, David Plowden, Thomas Struth, Ana Vieira, Noé Sendas, Antonio Dias, Adrian Paci, Alexander Star, Grabriel Orozco, Liu Bolin, Santiago Sierra, Steven Spielberg. It’s explored how the public place retains the memory of those who use it daily through the concepts of anthropological place, non-place and 'terrain-vague'. Then the construction of the dwelling place as well as their relationship with the concept of shelter is explored, which serves as an introduction to the study of the paradigm of homeless. This reflection resulted in two unique pieces of character art that explore the studied problematic through the reconstruction of local ambiguities and fleeting hints of occupations
