Abstract:
Antonin Artaud (1896–1948) is considered to be one of the most influential theatre practitioners in the 20th century although his theory has been deemed too abstruse. The aim of this paper is to offer a systematic account of Antonin Artaud’s concepts for his Theatre of Cruelty and the ways it influenced subsequent theatre practitioners, namely Peter Brook, Jerzy Grotowski and Eugenio Barba.

Abstract:
The influence of Artaud's theories in the world of theatre is, today, an indisputable reality. Indeed, Artaud represents the pillar on which the collective groups of independent theatre arisen in the years 60-70 (Living Theater, etc.) rest; the most innovative theories of renowned theater directors such as Jerzy Grotowski or Peter Brook; the postdramatic theatre (the performance, among others) and the new rank granted to the word in the theatrical representation. At present, Artaud is an inescapable reference in the theatrical field: Artaud and The theatre and the plague; Artaud and Theatre of cruelty; theoretical writings collected in Theatre and its double. This article aims to address the reception of Artaud on the Spanish theatre stage. We are interested in revealing what representations of Artaud have been privileged - the theatre man, the madman, the poet, the sick ... - and examine the incidence of these performances in the dissemination of the work of Antonin Artaud in Spain. Poke, Robin, and n/a. "A case study of Olympic, World and Commonwealth Sculling champion Peter Antonie." University of Canberra. Health Sciences, 2006. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20061207.104628.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a biographical case study of Olympic, World and Commonwealth sculling champion Peter Antonie, whose career at the elite or high performance level spanned some 23 years from 1977 to 2000. The thesis examines the exploits of an oarsman and sculler regarded within his sport as one of Australias greatest ever, despite his being considered physically disadvantaged at every phase of his career. Antonie was, most notably, a man of small stature widely considered a handicap at the level of rowing to which he aspired, and at which he ultimately succeeded. The study also examines what it was, despite those perceived disadvantages, that drove him to excel. The thesis further examines, in thematic form, parallel developments within Australian rowing and sculling in the quarter of a century in which Peter Antonie competed. This was a period during which fundamental changes were seen in Australian sport, notably in the areas of funding and administration, and which saw a transformation from amateur to professional participation at the Olympic, Commonwealth Games and world championships levels. There were also marked changes to high performance rowing as a result of technological advances that produced new types of equipment, and scientific developments that brought new training and selection methodologies. The research was carried out as part of a systematic attempt to examine and investigate Peter Antonies reputation, particularly as it compares with his better-known contemporaries, the so-called Oarsome Foursome, and to analyse that reputation in light of the administrative developments in Australian rowing and Australian sport. The historical approach used was the biographical method of research and analysis, with the preferred technique the obtaining of oral testimony from 50 interviewees, some of whom were interviewed more than once. The research clearly indicated that throughout his career Peter Antonie continually defied assumptions about his potential, particularly where science-based preconceptions about talent identification were concerned, and achieved success far beyond initial expectations. As a result his achievements, nationally and globally, are perhaps unparalleled, and he is held in the highest regard, particularly by the higher profile Oarsome Foursome. Despite this accolade, however, Antonies public profile remains very low, to the extent that beyond the rowing fraternity he is virtually unknown. Despite, too, rowings status as an Olympic sport and the commensurate increases in funding during Antonies career, he himself maintains a fundamentally amateur approach to his participation in rowing and is critical of several facets of its current professional administration. Despite, too, rowing and sculling once being among Australias major sports a hundred or so years ago, within contemporary Australian society it has a low profile, a situation which, given that current administration, appears likely to continue. Problems encountered during the research included some diffidence on the part of an essentially humble and self-effacing subject and a lack of literature relating to Antonie and his sport. But these were to an extent offset by the enthusiasm displayed for the project by other interviewees. The results of the research are significant in that, like the subject, they defy some precepts concerning facets of Australian rowing and sculling, which in turn might encourage further investigation.

Abstract:
On 13 May 2019 Peter Häberle celebrated his 85th birthday. The present volume documents the results of a festive colloquium in Hamburg. It is a personal homage of an international circle of friends and students, which – oriented on three major research interests if the jubilant: constitution, public welfare and peace – discusses fundamental questions of the constitutional state. Facing the current challenges of liberal political orders through authoritarianism and populism, the volume´s contributions stand up resolutely for a “culture of the constitution”, oriented towards the common good, against a cult of power. Included are, amongst others, Peter Häberle´s contribution on a “Culture of Peace” and on the “Weimar Constitution”. Congratulations from all over the world reflect quintessential constitutional questions from a very individual angle. With contributions by Andreas von Arnauld, Miguel Azpitarte-Sánchez, Francisco Balaguer Callejón, Bengt Beutler, Antonio D´Atena, Peter Häberle, Markus Kotzur, Pratyush Kumar, Fulco Lanchester, Gilmar Ferreira Mendes, Lothar Michael, Jörg Paul Müller, Vasco Pereira da Silva, Paolo Ridola, Ingo Wolfgang Sarlet, Michael Stolleis, Johann Justus Vasel, Alexandre Viala

Abstract:
The Pan-Africanist dream of freedom as expressed in South African political writings and literature from the 1940s to 1970s is the focus of the final chapter. The Pan-Africanist dreams expressed in political discourse that are discussed include: the ANC Youth League’s Manifesto (1944); the ANC’s Programme of Action (1949); the political writings of Muziwakhe Anton Lembede, A. P. Mda and Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe; the PAC’s Manifesto of the Africanist Movement (1959); and the articles and reviews in PAC publications like The Africanist and Mafube. Pan-Africanist dreams of freedom expressed in literary terms are discussed in sections on Lembede’s thoughts on individual literary works; Mda’s prescriptions for literature; Sobukwe’s wide reading and eclectic literary tastes; Melikhaya Mbutumu’s praise poems; novels hostile to the PAC by Peter Abrahams, Richard Rive and Alex la Guma; and novels sympathetic to the PAC by Lauretta Ngcobo and Bessie Head. The popularity within the PAC of Howard Fast’s novels My Glorious Brothers (1948) and Spartacus (1951) is also assessed.

Taber, Douglass. "Enantioselective Preparation of Secondary Alcohols and Amines." In Organic Synthesis. Oxford University Press, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199764549.003.0034.

Full text
Abstract:
Secondary alcohols can be prepared in high enantiomeric excess by catalytic hydrogenation of ketones. Zhaoguo Zhang of Shanghai Jiaotong University has established (Organic Lett. 2007, 9, 5613) that β-keto sulfones such as 1 are suitable substrates for this hydrogenation. Reinhard Brückner of the Universität Freiburg has demonstrated (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2007, 46, 6537) that the rate of hydrogenation of β-keto esters such as 3 and 5 depends on the alcohol from which the ester is derived, so 3 can be reduced to 4 in the presence of 5. Enantiomerically-pure secondary alcohols and amines can also be prepared by adding an oxygen or a nitrogen to an existing carbon skeleton. Both Srivari Chandrasekhar of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad (Tetrahedron Lett. 2007, 48, 7339) and Arumugam Sudalai of the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune (Tetrahedron Lett. 2007, 48, 8544) have taken advantage of the previously-described enantioselective α-aminoxylation of aldehydes to establish what appears to be a robust preparative route to the enantiomerically-pure epoxides such as 9 of terminal alkenes. Karl Anker Jørgensen of Aarhus University has developed (Chem. Commun. 2007, 3646) a catalyst for the enantioselective addition of 11 to nitroalkenes such as 10. Armando Córdova of Stockholm University has shown (Tetrahedron Lett. 2007, 48, 5976) that epoxy aldehydes such as 14, easily prepared by the protocol he developed, are converted by the Bode catalyst to β-hydroxy esters such as 15. Hyunsoo Han of the University of Texas, San Antonio has described (Tetrahedron Lett. 2007, 48, 7094) an improved protocol for the enantioselective conversion of primary allylic carbonates 16 to secondary amines 17. René Peters of ETH Zurich has used (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2007, 46, 7704) a related procedure for the construction of aminated quaternary centers. Mukund P. Sibi of North Dakota State University has devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, 8064) a catalyst for the conjugate addition of the benzyloxyamine 20 to acyl pyrazoles, and Claudio Palomo of the Universidad de País Vasco has found (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2007, 46, 8054) that a simple diphenyl prolinol catalyst will effect enantioselective α-amination of aldehydes.
