Abstract:
In this thesis paper, I will document and analyze the process of making my graduate thesis film, Just Like Wild Pete. I will start by stating my overall thesis statement, then move into each specific area of the filmmaking process. I will translate my learning at the University of New Orleans Film and Theatre program into real life situations with this film, as well as detail my successes and struggles throughout the process. I will analyze my own work, and constantly look to how I can improve in the future. In the end, I will determine if my thesis proves true, and if I was successful in the individual aspects of filmmaking, as well as the thesis film as a whole.

Abstract:
Purpose: The present study of doctoral physical education teacher education (D-PETE) programs was part of a longitudinal study that provided an extensive description of demographics including: (a) doctoral program characteristics, (b) faculty, and (c) doctoral students/graduates. Method: This trend study incorporated 3 data sets (2005–2006, 2008–2009, and 2011–2012) that described the characteristics of D-PETE programs. Academic heads of D-PETE programs provided demographic information on their doctoral students, faculty, and institutional characteristics for the 2005–2006, 2008–2009, and 2011–2012 academic years and selected summary data from 1996–1997 through 2011–2012. Results/Conclusion: As a result of this longitudinal data collection, the following trends were revealed. First, there was a decrease in the number of D-PETE programs and an increase of nontenured and part-time pedagogy faculty. Second, initial teacher licensure programs remained in existence at the vast majority of D-PETE programs. Third, funding for doctoral students at D-PETE programs was decreasing. Fourth, racial composition of doctoral graduates and current doctoral students remained largely skewed toward Caucasians. Fifth, there was a slight decline in the percentage of doctoral graduates entering higher education, but employment rates were exceptionally high. Sixth, non-U.S. doctoral students and ABDs were marketable in the United States.

Brown, Naomi Jane. "Post-transcriptional regulation of the pea plastocyanin gene (PetE)." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2004. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.597002.

Full text
Abstract:
Expression of the pea plastocyanin gene (PetE) is regulated both by light and by signals from the chloroplast. Previous work has indicated that the light and chloroplast-controlled regulation operates post-transcriptionally in transgenic tobacco, requiring the correct 5’ terminus of the transcript and elements within the plastocyanin-coding region. The post-transcriptional light and chloroplast-controlled regulation of pea PetE has now been demonstrated to operate in transgenic Arabidopsis plants, indicating that the regulation is conserved in an additional plant species. The overall aim of the research described in this dissertation was to investigate the mechanisms by which light and plastid signals influence the stability of PetE transcripts. PetE constructs containing premature stop codons in the coding region were generated to investigate whether translation has a role in the light or chloroplast-controlled regulation. RNA-gel-blot analysis of transgenic plants containing these constructs was used to examine the effects of light and plastid inhibitors on pea PetE transcript accumulation in 7-day-old tobacco seedlings. The results obtained suggested that translation of the start of the PetE coding region is required for both light and plastid-regulated transcript stability. Constructs containing progressive 3’ deletions of the PetE coding region, fused to the Luc reporter gene, were generated to examine how much of the coding sequence is necessary for the regulation. Luciferase assays and RNA-gel-blot analysis were carried out on transgenic tobacco seedlings containing the constructs, to examine the effects of light and plastid inhibitors on the regulation. The results indicated that an element important in the light and chloroplast-controlled regulation is located in the first 12% of the coding region, corresponding to the first 60 nucleotides. The start of the plastocyanin-coding region therefore appears to contain sequences important in the regulation by light and plastid signals, and these sequences may need to be translated in order for the regulation to operate.

O'Neil, Kason, and Debra Sazama. "edTPA Technology Requirements: An Examination of PETE Students’ Experiences." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2018. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/4018.

Full text
Abstract:
The edTPA is a performance-based, subject specific, teacher performance assessment that is now being required for teacher licensure by 16 states, with more states moving towards implementation in the future. As part of the edTPA submission requirements, pre-service teachers must prepare, edit, and upload multiple digital video recordings of their teaching. This study aimed at exploring pre-service physical educator use and perceptions of the technology requirements of the edTPA process, as well as their perceptions of how well their educator preparation program prepared them for the technology requirements. A sample of edTPA completers were surveyed from two different states in the US (Tennessee & Wisconsin) that have fully adopted the assessment as requirement for teacher licensure. Principal investigators (PI's) purposefully solicited physical education teacher education programs (PETE) from within their state to request edTPA completer participation. Participants were asked to complete a survey that consisted of both quantitative and qualitative items about edTPA completer perceptions. A total of 24 participants completed the survey. Overall, survey responses showed that participants felt: (a) their teacher education program did an adequate job educating about selecting and editing video clips for edTPA upload, (b) they found difficulty in preparing consistent video clips that could both see and hear the three focus students, (c ) that the 20 minute video submitted to edTPA was not a good overall representation of their teaching ability, (d) that the recording/editing/uploading of video clips was a time consuming process, and (e) that it is imperative that pre-service teachers are given multiple practice attempts with technology and video prior to the actual edTPA. The findings of this study suggest that though pre-service teachers do not feel the edTPA videos are an accurate representation of their teaching ability, they did feel their PETE programs did a good job preparing them for the video recording process. In addition, most of the participants noted that they struggled to maintain audio and visual quality. The edTPA is widely a new assessment tool for most teacher education programs, with continual growth around the country on a yearly basis. It is essential for the PETE community to continually explore the most effective ways to prepare and educate pre-service teachers about how to navigate the technology requirements (Parkes & Powell, 2015).

Abstract:
The study investigated two main questions: the first focused on the factors that enabled and constrained student teachers' engagement of a socially critical pedagogy in physical education teacher education (PETE); the second centered on gaining insight into the usefulness of knowledgeability as a concept for analysing student teachers engagement of a socially critical pedagogy. At the time of writing this thesis empirical analyses of socially critical pedagogies in physical education were rare in the educational literature. The study provided an alternative way of analysing student teachers’ engagement of a socially critical pedagogy in PETE. Alternative in that it avoided recycling and reproducing the dualism between agency and structure (Aronowitz and Giroux, 1985) that is prevalent in much of the physical education literature. Conversational interviews were conducted with four student teachers and their teacher educators throughout the duration of a one-semester PETE unit in an Australian university. Observations were made of the lecture and practical sessions and a document analysis was conducted of all unit learning resources. The analytical frame used in the study was structuration theory (Giddens, 1979, 1984). This framework was useful because it gave primacy to the duality of structure which recognised ‘the structural properties of social systems are both the medium and outcome of practices that constitute those systems’ (Giddens, 1979, p.69). The pedagogical intentions of the teacher educator co-ordinating the PETE unit were to change the orientations of the student teachers towards primary school physical education by encouraging them to adopt different ‘lenses’ through which to examine pedagogical practices. These ‘lenses’ highlighted the questions central to those with socio-critical intentions, eg. power, social injustice and diversity. Data generated from conversations with, and observations of, the student teachers, indicated that the actualisation of the teacher educator's intentions were somewhat limited. Despite this, adopting structuration theory as the explanatory framework for the study proved generative at a number of levels. Broadly, structuration theory was useful because it highlighted the way that student teachers' engagement with a socially critical pedagogy is contingent upon particular (idiosyncratic) dialectics of agency and structure. Using the duality of structure as an analytical tool illustrated the way student teachers' were influenced by structural factors as well as the way these structural factors were in turn constituted by the action of the student teachers. Also, by utilising structuration theory as an explanatory framework, the concept of knowledgeability was identified as a useful concept for analysing student teachers' engagement with a socially critical pedagogy in PETE. What is more, the study highlighted the reflexivity of the self and social knowledge, both characteristics of late modernity, as being integral to the way the student teachers engaged with the socially critical pedagogy of EAE400. Not only did the study highlight the reflexivity of the self but it also provided insight into the reflexivity of social knowledge. Much of the socially critical work in physical education implicitly adopts a linear approach to change. Given the findings of the study it might be useful for future developments to consider change as circular. The thesis concludes by suggesting that given the reflexivity of social knowledge, socially critical perspectives might be more readily engaged if the PETE content was incorporated into student teachers existing knowledge frameworks rather than viewed as a replacement for such frameworks.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore changes that occurred in physical education since the introduction of the New York State Standards in 1996 and ways teacher educators perceive related changes in both school and Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) programs. With the release of State and National Standards (NASPE, 1995), associated educational reform, assessment, and accountability have become important in physical education. Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with six participants considered experts in state standards. Cote, Salmela, and Russell's (1995) guidelines were used to inductively analyze and interpret the qualitative data. The results of the analysis yielded three categories: (a) reasoning behind standards, which included rationales, developments, and comparisons, (b) impacts of standards, which involved PE effects, PETE reactions, and negative responses, and (c) actions resulting from standards which focused on implementation, leadership, assessments and accountability, and forward directions. Relationships between the properties within each category produced four areas of greatest interest/importance: implementation, PE effects, rationales, and forward directions. The result of this study is a focused look at standards-based reforms in New York State upon which teachers, administrators, PETE professionals, and educational policy makers may reflect.

Champagne, Brian Alan. "A metaphoric analysis of the Christian identity rhetoric of Pastor Pete Peters." Scholarly Commons, 1999. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/2623.

Full text
Abstract:
Pastor Pete Peters is a minister in La Porte, Colorado. He operates a small church, an Internet website, a newsletter, and a worldwide cassette tape ministry. He teaches Christian Identity, the belief that the white race is Israel of the Bible. His rhetoric contains open derision of Jews, homosexuals, and racial minorities, although he never openly advocates violence toward any group. After tracing the roots of the Christian Identity movement and reviewing the literature on the movement, this thesis examines Peters' rhetoric at the metaphoric level, analyzing the metaphors in four of Peters' key works for their underlying meaning. Metaphoric criticism as a method of rhetorical analysis is introduced and then applied to the metaphors extracted from America the Conquered, Baal Worship, The Greatest Love Story Never Told, and Whores Galore. These books, all by Peters, employ his metaphor of Jews corrupting the United States government and attempting to destroy white Christians through media, courts, and banking, of which Peters asserts they control. Through extracting and analyzing the metaphors in the four books, it was found that Peters does more than warn against corrupt systems: through metaphor and Biblical parallels, he subversively condones and nearly commands violence against Jews, homosexuals, and the government.

Abstract:
Aim The aim of this study has been to examine differences and similarities between five universities with physical education teacher programs. The focus has been on the syllabi regarding the subject didactics and the different movement cultures that are represented within the frame of these courses. • What content is represented within the subject didactics courses? • Which underlying frame factors affect the content within the physical education teachers’ education? • What type of decision structures determines the content within the “subject didactics courses”? Method A content analysis was performed on a total of 22 subject didactics syllabi for the physical education teacher program among five universities in Sweden. Furthermore, an interview study was conducted with a total of five handpicked program directors/education officers from five different universities. This study has used Bourdieu’s theory of habitus, field and capital, as well as Göran Linde’s curriculum theory of arenas as its theoretical framework. Results This study shows that all universities fundamentally have the same movement cultures represented in their education. There are only a few practices that are university specific and these are there, mainly by geographical reasons. The results further show that frame factors such as institutional traditions, course budgets, teaching competence and facilities affect the content within the program. Provided, if they are in alliance with the existing guidelines in the Swedish Code of Statues as well as their own institutions’. Finally, the results also indicate that it is the subject teacher educators that seem to have the best opportunities to affect the final content in the physical education teacher program. Conclusion This study has shown that all the universities convey a relative equivalent education when it comes to the movement cultures that are represented. This could, for instance, be understood as a result of strong traditions within the sport movement in Sweden and the teaching teacher meetings, which acts as a framework for the individual university. This study further displays that there seem to be a viscous development process among the universities with longer traditions of physical exercise than the newly setup ones, when it comes to a more contemporary content.

Dabo, Dina. "Community-based natural resource management: The case of Community Forest Management Areas in Pete, Zanzibar." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/26202.

Full text
Abstract:
The shift from centralised conservation to Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) was the highlight of the conservation discourse across the world during the late 1980s and early 1990s. CBNRM efforts were believed to have the potential of successfully merging biodiversity conservation simultaneously with local development efforts. However, the increasing critiques against the applicability of CBNRM interventions in different contexts is threatening the viability of the approach. Extant literature on CBNRM interventions focuses on the theoretical aspects of such efforts at the expense of the practical and context specific elements. This thesis intends to fill such a gap in literature by focusing on the practical and contextual elements of an example of this approach in Zanzibar. In an attempt to conserve the isles' natural forests, Zanzibar has adopted Community-Forest Management Areas (CoFMAs) bordering its natural forests. In this study, focus is placed on Pete's CoFMA, a village bordering the isles' last remaining natural forests- Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park (JCBNP). Pete provides an ideal site due to the conflict that exists between residents and the CoFMA intervention. By using the political ecological framework, this study is able to examine the political, social, historical and economic elements that play a significant role in the practice of CBNRM efforts. Narratives from residents are relied on to elucidate on such elements in relation to the existence of the CoFMA in Pete Village. Narratives gathered through interviews and participant observation concluded that while CoFMAs have been set up with the optimistic goal of conserving the forest and providing development to community members; in practice, the conservation intervention has proved otherwise. In spite of the achievement of some developmental goals, the overall findings indicate that the CoFMA has failed to protect the forests and its natural resources from degradation. At the same time, community members are facing difficulties to live a sustainable life.

Abstract:
Classroom response systems have become popular in K–12 and higher education settings in recent years in order to gauge student learning. The physical education environment is unique in that it is difficult to manage the technology associated with these systems, and therefore, student assessment can be cumbersome. A free classroom response system is available that requires very little technology, is easy to use, and can provide feedback on student learning in an instant. This article will discuss Plickers as a real-time formative assessment tool that teachers can use to enhance assessment of student learning in physical education settings from K–12 to higher education.

Konukman, Ferman. "The Effects of Multimedia Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) on Teaching Tennis in Physical Education Teacher Education." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28258.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of multimedia CAI on undergraduate PETE majors' teaching of the serve in tennis. The data were obtained from 18 undergraduate students enrolled in a PETE evaluation and assessment course at Virginia Tech. Subjects were stratified by gender and randomly assigned to three groups as Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI) group (n=6), Teacher Instruction (TI) group (n=6), and Control (CG) group (n=6). The results of this study were gathered from three tests: Tennis Serve Content Knowledge Test, Tennis Serve Skill Analysis Test, Tennis Task Sequence Test. In addition, two six minutes micro teaching sessions were conducted and data was collected via Tennis Serve Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) Assessment Sheet, and finally, an open ended survey was completed to understand students' attitudes toward CAI. There are two independent variables in this study. These are Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI) and Teacher Instruction (TI). A pre-test and post-test experimental design was applied. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to determine the differences among the three groups, and pairwise ranking with the Mann Whitney U test was conducted between all comparisons as a post hoc analysis. Moreover, the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test was used to determine pre-to post-test changes within the groups. Alpha set at p< 0.5. Overall, teacher instruction (TI) intervention was very dominant in the results. Teacher instruction (TI) group performed significantly in the tennis serve content knowledge test, tennis serve task analysis test, PCK-Appropriate cues, and PCK-Appropriate demonstration. However, CAI group was also successful in the tennis serve content knowledge test and PCK-Appropriate demonstration. Interestingly, none of the groups were successful in the tennis serve skill analysis test and PCK-Appropriate feedback. Finally, students' perception toward CAI was positive in general and students indicated that they would like to use CAI in other PETE method courses. However, some of the students reported that CAI was very repetitive, and also technical problems were reported. The results of this study indicated that CAI can be an effective way of instruction in certain conditions: CAI had significant effect on content knowledge and PCK-Appropriate demonstration. In conclusion, the 21st century will be an information age and computers will be an essential part of the education system in all grades and ages. Physical education teacher education programs and physical education lessons in K-12 education are no exceptions. Computers and instructional technology should be an integral part of PETE and K-12 physical education without sacrificing the physical activity.

Abstract:
This thesis represents a part of a program of study that is reaching a closure. The broadest brush that could be applied to my work is that it concerns Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE), that it focuses on aspects of professional socialisation, and that it involves various case studies utilising naturalistic inquiry. Whilst it would be impossible and naive to believe that the reading of these texts will produce the meanings that I encourage, or have internalised, nevertheless the order of reading is at least something that I can argue for. Read in the order I suggest throughout the thesis I am hopeful that my subjectivities, and the learning and understandings I have reached may become clear. The purpose of this two part thesis is an exploration of the interplay or dialectic that exists between PETE students, academic staff and the subject matter within PETE. I have had to come to understand the limitations and advantages of insider research as the work has been completed at my University in the School of Human Movement and Sports Science where I have worked for twenty years. This thesis examines the extent to which studentship and oppositional behaviour underlies the dialectic that exists between the students and the various discourses within the program. I have written the study in two very different formats, one, a collection of stories about PETE and the other, an interpretative case study conducted during 1993 and 1994. Within the case study, studentship and oppositional behaviour were viewed as a measure of the extent to which students react and push against the forces of socialisation within their PETE program that is seen to represent dominant discourses, The following broad research questions were considered to enable the above analysis. 1. What is the nature of studentship and oppositional behaviour in a high status subject within PETE compared to a subject that is seen by students to be of little relevance and of low status? 2. How are studentship and oppositional behaviour related to students subjective warrants? 3. How are the studentship and oppositional behaviours exhibited by students related to the pedagogy and discourses reflected in the knowledge, beliefs and practices within the two sites. The starting point for this research was a study conducted as a totally separate research task (Swan, 1992) that investigated the hierarchies of subject knowledge within a PETE site and investigated the influence of such hierarchies upon student intention. A great deal of meta analysis exists about the manner in which a technocratic rationality pervades PETE but very little case study material of what this means to students and academic staff within such institutions is available. The stories in Between The Rings And Under The Gym Mat, which is the second part of this thesis, represent ‘the data’ differently from the case study, but they speak their own truth. At times the nature of the story is indistinguishable from the reality of the case study. Wexler (1992) undertook an ethnographic study about identity formation in three very different high schools, and published the findings in a book entitled Becoming Somebody. His introductory words about the nature of the social story he tells, are significant to this study and story. Social history is recounted by creative intervention that can only be made from culturally accessible materials. Ethnography is neither an objective realist, nor subjective imaginist account. Rather, it is an historical artefact that is mediated by elaborated distancing of culturally embedded and internally contradictory (but seemingly independent and coherent) concepts that take on a life of their own as theory. So, this is not ‘news from nowhere,’ but a theoretically structured story where both the story and its structure are part of my times. (p.6) The case study before you is organised with an analysis of studentship and oppositional behaviour detailed in chapter one. The following chapter conceptualises studentship and oppositional behaviour in relation to particular themes of professional socialisation, resistance to oppression and youth culture. Chapter three locates the case study to the major paradigmatic debates about the value and nature of the subject matter content within PETE, Chapter four outlines the case site, the research process and the research dilemma’s confronted in this study. The remaining three chapters are the case record as I can best understand it. In Between the Rings and under the Gym Mat (part B) the story most directly concerned with studentship and oppositional behaviour, is called Tale of Two Classes’. It takes on a very different reality to the case study (part A) and much can be said about the reality of lived experience which can be portrayed in narrative form as opposed to a clinical case study. Many of the other stories pose similar images that are contradictory and never quite complete. I have written a separate methodological section for the narrative stories. It is my intention that the case study and the series of stories should be viewed as essentially complementary, but also a discrete representation of a part of PETE. As part of the Ed D program I have undertaken four discrete research tasks as the starting point for this research I have referred to the first one (Hierarchies of Subject knowledge within PETE). I also undertook an action research project about ‘Teaching Poorly by Choice.’ A further piece of research was a somewhat reflective effort to draw together what this has all meant to me from a subjective and reflexive perspective. Such efforts are often seen as being self indulgent, as subjectivity in the form of lived experience sits uneasily in academia. A final paper involved an evaluation of Between the Rings and Under the Gym Mat from a pedagogical perspective by PETE professionals around the world. And that's the way things turned out.

van, Aardt Marleen. "Effect of shelf-life and light exposure on acetaldehyde concentration in milk packaged in HDPE and PETE bottles." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/31347.

Full text
Abstract:
Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PETE) packaging is becoming an increasingly popular choice of packaging material for milk, but has the disadvantage of releasing odorous acetaldehyde into food matrices.

Sensory detection group thresholds for acetaldehyde in whole, low fat and nonfat unflavored milks were 3939, 4020, and 4040 ppb respectively with no significant difference due to fat level. Chocolate flavored milk and spring water showed detection thresholds levels for acetaldehyde of 10048 and 167 ppb respectively. This information assisted in determining if acetaldehyde migration from the package to the product would influence the flavor of the product.

Whole milk was packaged in glass, high density polyethylene (HDPE), amber PETE, clear PETE, and clear PETE with UV light block and was exposed to fluorescent light of 1100-1300 lux (100-120 FC) at 4oC for 18 days. Sensory and chemical analysis and was done on milk from all containers over a period of 18 days. Emphasis was on oxidation, acetaldehyde and lacks freshness off-flavors and byproducts.

All volatile flavor compounds studied (acetaldehyde, pentanal, dimethyl disulfide, and hexanal) were increased in light-exposed milk samples. Amber PETE showed the least amount of oxidation off-flavor, while clear PETE with UV block showed significantly less oxidation off-flavor than glass, clear PETE or HDPE on day 7 and 18. Acetaldehyde was not detected by sensory analysis in either light-exposed or light-protected samples. Chemical analysis showed relative acetaldehyde levels in glass (2220 ppb), HDPE (1265 ppb), amber PETE (3397 ppb), clear PETE (2930 ppb), and clear PETE with UV light block (1754 ppb) were all below concentrations found for human flavor threshold.

Lee, Chang-Hyun. "The knowledge base for physical education teacher education (PETE) : a comparative study of university programmes in England and Korea." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/336248.

Full text
Abstract:
This study compares and explains the knowledge base (Kirk et al, 1997; Shulman, 1987) for teaching physical education in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) programmes in England and Korea from the 1960s to the present. In the USA (Siedentop, 1989), the UK (Kirk, 1992) and Australia (Macdonald et al, 1999), the erosion of time spent on content knowledge (CK) for sports and other physical activities has been noted as a matter of concern. The academicisation of the physical activity field and the marginalisation of PETE within it are major factors in the shift in the knowledge base. Data was presented from a comparative study of four PETE programme in two countries in respect of social constructionism (Berger and Luckmann, 1966). The historical resources such as timetables, curricula and official documents were analysed using documentary methods and grounded theory. Grounded theory was also used to analyse interviews with previous and present teacher educators, student teachers, and teachers who graduated from each university. I found that for universities in both countries, first, the hours of theoretical content knowledge (TCK) and practical content knowledge (PRACK) in PETE had been reduced over time. Time for units of physical activity had decreased significantly. Second, student teachers learnt physical activity to introductory levels only, and the spiral system for the physical activity curriculum, where students ideally move from introductory to advanced levels of knowledge, did not work well. In terms of differences between the countries, first, in England there were many sessions where PRACK was interrelated with pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and knowledge of learners and their characteristics (KLC). However, this was less common in Korea. In particular, interrelationships between PRACK and PCK and KLC were very weak because the Korean system is based on the study of kinesiology. Second, many students and teachers in England requested sessions to assist them to teach at GCSE and A Level. In Korea, in contrast, the need for PCK and KLC was identified. I conclude by confirming that CK forms only a small proportion of the knowledge base for teaching physical education confirming that there is a gap between the knowledge base in PETE and the knowledge requirements for teaching physical education in schools. I suggest developing special units in the PETE course based on models of learning, teaching and philosophy and being suitable for inclusion in the academic and scholarly culture of the university.

Herold, Frank. "The development of pre-service teachers subject knowledge during a post-graduate physical education teacher education programme." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2013. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/13618.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is concerned with the development of subject knowledge in pre-service teachers of secondary physical education (PE) during their one year Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) course. It investigates the knowledge bases for teaching which pre-service teachers recognised, developed and prioritised, as well as the key influences that impacted on their subject knowledge development. Adopting an interpretive methodology informed by constructivist grounded theory, the study employed interviews, lesson observations and post-lesson reflections as principal research methods. Pre-service teachers were seen to make wide-ranging progress in their subject knowledge, including the development of content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, general pedagogical knowledge, knowledge of curriculum and knowledge of pupils. Through this they advanced their view of the nature of PE and how they wanted to teach it. The research highlights, that the process of knowledge development in PETE is socially constructed and complex. Much of the pre-service teachers development was influenced by various communities of practice, particularly their school placements PE departments, but also their University-based learning community. Of these, the legitimised practices within the PE departments were found to be especially important to pre-service teachers development. University-based learning was credited by pre-service teachers with enhancing their holistic understanding of the learning process, developing those aspects of critical pedagogy that were under-developed in schools. The impact of different subject knowledge profiles and the consequences of knowledge deficits are identified. This raises questions about the role and development of subject knowledge within PETE and calls for a re-vitalised debate on the nature of the knowledge in PE. Framed within an ever-changing policy landscape is the need for enhanced and stable partnerships that promote shared visions of PETE, an essential part of which is the need to collaboratively design and evaluate explicit knowledge development pathways which allow pre-service teachers to fulfil their potential and genuinely decide how they want to teach PE.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Individuals that perceive stigma surrounding their identity and fear rejection of support requests may experience a paradox whereby they seek support indirectly from support networks (friends and family) to avoid rejection and are met with unsupportive responses. This study extended this paradox to sexual minorities using survey data from a sample of 133 individuals self-identified as gay and lesbian. Results of structural equation modeling showed self-stigma and fear of support rejection linked to increased indirect support seeking, which in turn explained unsupportive network responses, providing support for a paradox among gays and lesbians. Findings may have implications for interventions to improve support exchanges in the lives of sexual minorities.

Abstract:
Pets are now an essential part of our lives. Increasingly, Peruvian families choose to have a pet in their home, mainly in large cities. This is because there is a worldwide trend that families have fewer and fewer children, or even none at all, this is where these adorable little beings somehow fill that void and become one more member of the family that they dedicate all their love and attention. In this context, Nice Pets offers an alternative to all those families who wish to give the best in quality and fashion to their pets, with modern and innovative designs tailored to the client's taste and preferences. Our proposal goes beyond the sale, it provides advice and specialists feedback if necessary. It should be noted that the textile and fashion items are booming and growing in Peru, as well as there is a powerful global trend with pet lovers, people who love pets and consider them part of the family. This combination of trends makes our proposal a great opportunity for success, even more so when we have shown in the financial analysis that our business is profitable, with an initial investment of S / 32,658, an amount that will be fully assumed by the shareholders and recovered in a horizon of 5 years. The viability of our business resides mainly in the quality of our garments, as well as our dedicated service and attention to our clients.

Full text
Abstract:

Metod: Till denna litteraturstudie samlades data in från databaserna

Cinahl och Swemed. I studien användes metodprocessens åtta steg enligt Polit och Beck (2004). Tre kategorier framkom ur analysen.

Background: Through thousands of year people and domestic animal have been living side by side. Earlier studies have focused on the physiological, psychological and sociological effects pets have on humans.

Aim: The aim of this literature review was to examine which meaning pets have in the caring of the elderly people.

Method: For this literature review, data was collected from the databases

Cinahl and Swemed. In the studie a method processing in eight steps according to Polit and Beck (2004) was used. During analyse three main categories appeared. These three categories were, pets meaning of the elderly people, pets as therapy and problems which can appear when elderly people want to socialize with pets.

Result: The result showed that pets have an important role in the daily life of many elderly people. For the elderly people, pets can be the most important relation and sometimes the only close relation they have. Pet therapy indicates that it is a good complement to other treatment therapies for the elderly people.

Conclusion: Elderly people feel good when they socialize with pets. Pets bring a nice atmosphere in their environment.

Abstract:
The main objective of this research work is to evaluate the desirability, feasibility and opportunity of the proposal of a business plan for the sale of BARF (biologically appropriate raw food) for domestic dogs. Our proposal is based on the existence of a growing demand for healthy food for pets, which is aligned with the tendency to seek new alternatives for healthy eating for the people themselves and their environment. It is fundamentally sought to reduce the risk of diseases and have a long life for pets. In addition, in recent years there has been a continuous increase in spending on pet care and the number of pets per household, both trends have created the concept of doglovers. Based on these premises, an economic analysis was carried out to estimate the viability of this business plan, which was consistent with the reality of the target market, generating profit margins and being sustainable over time.

The objective of this work is to study the limits of the “Política Nacional de Desenvolvimento Regional” of the PT governments, with the double interest of evaluating the scope of the policy within which it proposes, and also show the limits of the policy itself. In order to reach the objective, we carried out a vast bibliographical review on different aspects of the Brazilian regional question and the regional development policies of the different periods mobilizing the theoretical reference for understanding the historical movement. Directly addressing our research object – the regional development policies of the PT governments – we have made a critical reading of the various documents produced by the Ministry of National Integration with the policy proposals. We also did an mapping in electronic newspapers in search of updated information that could give us clues about the progress of these policies, like the political dilemmas within the Ministry of Integration. And finally a survey of data of an economic and social nature, as well as Northeaster GDP in the Brazilian GDP, level of Unemployment, level of illiteracy, among others, in an effort to evaluate the effectiveness of these policies by mapping what has actually progressed and what has not left the paper. The results show us that the expansion and modernization of the infrastructure and regional logistics in general have been delayed and has not fulfilled the role for which they were intended. It is also perceived lack of motivation, of interest of classes for policy to be firm, the macroeconomic policy adopted by the government, serves the interests of the hegemonic fraction in the power bloc - the great international and national financial capital - imposes limits to the policies of development. And the belief in institutions to solve the dilemmas of the Northeaster population prevents the perception that the reproduction of the poverty conditions of the subaltern classes is related to the maintenance of the power of the local dominant classes and that the Northeaster backwardness is part of the process of uneven development of peripheral capitalism itself, and its relation to the national division of work, and the international division of work that Brazil is subjected to.

The intense interactions between people and pets have not been accompanied by responsible ownership practices over the years. Dogs and cats are the pets of choice, and they are found in great amount of homes. It is crucial to put into practice educative actions on zoonoses and on responsibility of owning animals to mitigate public health-related problems. However, before their effectuation, it is necessary to assess the local reality. The present study aimed to assess owned-dogs and cats populations and to evaluate the level of knowledge of responsible pet ownership and rabies among residents of socially and economically contradictory neighborhoods of the city of Jaboticabal, State of São Paulo. From September to November, 2007, 185 residents of Jardim Patriarca, Jardim Paulista and Jardim Santa Rosa neighborhoods and 197 residents of Nova Jaboticabal were interviewed, giving a total of 382 interviews. Chi-square test and Multiple Correspondence Analysis were used for data analysis. Despite socioeconomic contradiction, the level of knowledge was similar. However, better levels of income favored greater expenses with veterinary care services, including vaccinations, and a greater amount of pets per household. Results recommend the need for constant educational actions on responsible pet ownership and injury prevention for all social classes of Jaboticabal, besides the establishment of a communication channel between private veterinarians and local government.

Abstract:
Currently, pets have become another member of the family and their death is painful but inevitable. There is an increase in families seeking to perpetuate through cremation, the memory of the being that gave them unconditional love. In Lima Metropolitana, approximately 60% of households (1.37 million) have some pets at home, dogs with 74% and cats 39%. Due to the growth of real estate, these families and their pets live in apartments or housing complexes and it is not allowed to bury their pets in the gardens. The goal of our project is to create a comprehensive pet cremation service that provides logistical and emotional support to families during this farewell process that is so sensitive to them. This comprehensive service includes moving family members from their homes to the wake and vice versa, a comfortable place while waiting for the custom-designed urn with their pet's ashes, cremation certificate, support groups and visits to pet shelter. For the start-up of the project, an initial investment of S / 253,741.00 is necessary, with a financing of 40% with bank loan and 60% with contribution from shareholders, where it is estimated that the capital recovery period will be one year approximately. Therefore, we conclude that, according to the study carried out, the Patitas del Recuerdo project is economically viable.

Abstract:
This dissertation reflects on the relationships maintained between humans and pet dogs in the city of São Paulo, which foundation consists of affectivity. It discusses the conception of these owners about the canine species and the characteristics recognized in these animals, which contradicts the idea of human exclusivity of the cognitive, communicative, feeling, sentience, and morality capacities. Holders of anthropomorphic characteristics, pet dogs are understood from an individual canine identity, with their own personality. Their specificities of the species also allow them to be valued when compared to humans, since the sincerity of affections and the moral purity attributed to them surpasses those of our species. The ethnographic study showed that these pets are extremely important in their owners lives and they are considered as members of the family, in some cases playing roles irreplaceable by humans. This work revisits the Brazilian anthropological production about the relationship between human beings and nonhuman animals; it addresses the different spheres of the relationship between dogs and people; and studies the pet market aimed at dogs and their owners, as well as their influence in this relationship.
